Like modern- day Surrealists, these emerging Austin ar tists are pushing the envelopes of realism to explore and connec t the worlds of obser vable reality with the deeper realities of the imagination. Their works are at once narrative and provocative, inviting viewers into their individual and collec tive subconscious. In daring to look beyond that which is merely seen, we can expec t the unexpec ted, see the familiar as strange, make per fec t sense of the illogical, and understand truths that transcend time and culture. DANIEL DAVIS A selft-taught artist, Daniel Davis is an avid painter who historically has focused to capture the nature of city and landscapes in plein air (painting onsite outside). Working primarily in oil, Davis has spent seasons of his life as a self-taught painter diving deep into the technical aspects of cloud making, perspective and realism. On occasion, Davis stepped outside of the realm of reality to explore the inner workings of his own imagination; as respresented in his works that depicted birds on a power line as musical notes or a glitter-gleaming Jesus on an electrical powerline that made a statement of the Savior’s powerful invitation to humanity. Davis is drawn to natural forms and beauty and loves the challenge of capturing the truth of clouds, flowing rivers, and birds in flight as a means to reflect the Spirit found in such gifts and within himself. A grounding and a freedom can be found in his process and pursuit of art making. His vivid imagination paired with his active relationship with God provides the perfect elements for exploring surrealism as he embarks to capture the essence of the Word and the nature of his Savior, Jesus Christ.

IAIN NEBERMAN Born in Austin, Texas in 1992, Iain Neberman spent his early life attending art classes at Laguna Gloria during the summers. After being marked by an art-related police incident along with an arrest at the age of 16, he disjointed from his creativity to focus on curricular work. He graduated McCallum High School in 2010 and continued to attend Austin Community College in pursuit of a graphic design degree. During this time, he worked as a disc jockey, documentary producer, and salesman. In 2014, aged 22, he began creating artwork professionally by seeking out local Austin-based businesses and arranging small showings of his work. His paintings primarily consist of animals, imaginary places and people in gouache and oil-based mediums. STATEMENT: My work is inspired by the recurring visions that intervene with my consciousness at random periods throughout my life. These incidents include flashes of information and lucid dreams involving extraterrestrials, strange locations and situations that serve as predictions of the future. These instances are a brief outline in the sea of varying stories situated in altered states of reality that constitute my psyche. Each piece creates a world within itself of idealized imagination that above all takes considerable patience to manifest as well as a strong feeling connected to its inception. There’s a sentient reflectivity of thought processes that are contained in each of the paintings. The stories connected to the creation of these pieces are just as engaging as the ideas presented.

ARTIST STATEMENT: “Dali Meets Rockwell”. In a style best described as Contemporary Narrative Realism, my paintings tell stories about the human condition and its relationship with both Creator and creation. Blending highly rendered representational content with stylistic abstraction, my art, both literally and figuratively, is an amalgum of both flesh and spirit. My recent work includes tactile and even deconstructivist elements, which interestingly enough, is also reflected in the funky mixed media pieces of painted imagery on wood and other found objects which I like to work on between paintings. My artwork seeks to define in the painted image and the repurposed object the connection between humanity and divinity, along with the redemptive work of the Divine Creator in and through me. TRANSFORMATION. My figurative subjects—often children because of their natural innocence and purity—are juxtaposed in strangely ethereal environments, and I delight in finding new purpose in old, mundane, or cast aside icons in the creation of something new and deep and meaningful and cool. Of course, the influence of my career as a graphic designer is manifest in the intentionality with which I approach content choices and composition. On the other hand, there is also a palpable antipathy toward the technology and crass hedonism inherent in the profession, which is why I left it. My soul is just better off with a paintbrush in my hand 24 than a mouse, and a child in my heart than a dollar figure. Go figure.
