Now that kids are back to school after a long summer break, it is necessary to constantly remind ourselves, as parents, how life changing and important our children truly are. “This is the true joy in life,” wrote George Bernard Shaw, “the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one. ... Life is no ‘brief candle’ for me. It is a sort of splendid torch, which I have got hold of for the moment; and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.” So true, parents should have their children’s needs at the top of their priority list and ensure that their children receive the best that we have to offer. Regardless of how busy we may be; nothing will replace the precious moments that we have shared with our kids. We are so privileged to be parents. Never forget to hug your kids and give them your best smile.

Tooth Decay Prevention Tips Dr. Elsa Echeverri

According to the most recent report of the Surgeon General, caries is the most common infectious disease of childhood. It is five times more common than asthma. What causes cavities? How does decay start? Cavities are caused by bacteria in your mouth that feed on sugar and secrete acids that eat into a tooth decalcifying the enamel. For decay to occur, it takes bacteria, vulnerable enamel, and sticky, sugary foods. Where does the bacteria come from? They come from the child’s mother and other people who care for and play with your baby. How does transmission occur? Bacteria is transmitted by sharing cups, bottles, utensils, blowing on your child’s hot food and kissing on the lips. How do I prevent my child from

08 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

Dr. Briceno

getting cavity causing bacteria? It is almost impossible to prevent any bacteria from being transferred to your baby’s mouth, however the type of bacteria that find their way to your baby’s mouth determines the risk of caries. That is why it’s important to make sure that everyone in the family has good oral health by brushing and flossing daily and visiting the dentist every 6 months. Helpful Hints: Make sure your child brushes their teeth 2-3 times a day Encourage your child to rinse with water after snacking and meals if brushing is not possible Chewing sugar free gum helps increase saliva production which helps wash away plaque and sugar Make sure everybody in the family has good oral health and visits the dentist every 6 months. Ask your pediatric dentist to help you assess your child’s diet

A Few Tips to Get Kids to Eat Healthier

Speed up the veggies! Prewashed and pre-cut organic vegetables are a great way to save time. Check the frozen section for a great variety as well. Frozen veggies are better than canned because they preserve more of the nutrients without preservatives. Use cookers that need no supervision! Use a rice cooker to make rice, quinoa and steamed vegetables in it. Slow cookers and crock pots serve the same purpose. While one part of the meal is cooking, you can prepare the rest. You can cook stew while you are at work, or run errands while the food is cooking. Buy freeze dried herbs! Did you know freeze dried herbs become “like fresh” when they are moistened? Use these to avoid all of the chopping without sacrificing flavor. They are great in the winter when your herb garden isn’t producing, and it saves having to buy an entire bunch of herbs just for a couple tablespoons! Make a schedule. Children need to eat every three to four hours: three meals, two snacks, and lots of fluids. If you plan for these, your child’s d i e t

will be much more balanced and he’ll be less cranky, because he won’t be famished. Keep a small cooler in the car when you’re out with your kids. Stock it with carrots, pretzels, yogurt, and water so you don’t have to rely on fast food Get kids cooking. If your children become involved in choosing or preparing meals, they’ll be more interested in eating what they’ve created. Take them to the store, and let them choose produce for you. If they’re old enough, allow them to cut up vegetables and mix them into a salad. Dip it. If your kids won’t eat vegetables, experiment with dips. Try serving a thinly cut carrot with some ranch salad dressing. Children also like hummus, salsa, and yogurt-based dressings. Bite your tongue. As hard as this may be, try not to comment on what or how much your kids are eating. Be as neutral as possible. Remember, you’ve done your job as a parent by serving balanced meals; your kids are responsible for eating them. If you play food enforcer -- saying things like “Eat your vegetables” -- your child will only resist.

How does UV radiation affect our health in Texas ? At Imagine Kids Magazine, we decided to research about the intensity of UV light in TEXAS. On that journey we were really surprised with the findings and wanted to share them with our wonderful readers. Texas’s UV Index ranges from 10 to 11. Which is really high and can be dangerous. For those of you that are not familiar with the term, UV Index predicts the level of solar UV radiation and indicates the risk of overexposure on a scale from 0 (low) to 11+ (extremely high). To our surprise Florida has a UV Index of 5 and Colorado 11. We would like to put emphasis in the importance of applying sunscreen lotion on a regular basis even if you are not outdoors or it is winter time and for those of you that do activities outdoors remember to reapply sunscreen every few hours. What is the UV Index and why do we need to keep a close look at it? The amount of UV light reaching the ground in any given place depends on a number of factors, including the time of day, time of year, elevation, and cloud cover. The higher the UV Index, the greater the exposure to UV rays 12 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

and the higher the chance of skin damage that could ultimately lead to skin cancer. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a major risk factor for most skin cancers. Sunlight is the main source of UV rays, which can damage the DNA in your skin cells. Tanning lamps and beds are also sources of UV rays. Ultraviolet radiation has 3 wavelength ranges: • UVA rays age cells and can damage cells’ DNA. • UVB rays can directly damage DNA, and are the main rays that cause sunburns. They are also thought to cause most skin cancers. • UVC rays are not normally a cause of skin cancer. UVA and UVB rays are the main cause of the sun’s damaging effects on the skin. UV rays damage the DNA of skin cells. Skin cancers begin when this damage affects the DNA of genes that control skin cell growth. Both UVA and UVB rays damage skin and cause skin cancer. UVB rays are a more potent cause of at least some skin cancers, but based on what is known today, there are no safe UV rays.

Sunscreens: controversy regarding their safety

Recently, manufacturers have introduced new sunscreen products that use titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, both typical ultraviolet (UV) radiation blockers found in many sunscreens but there has been some concern about their safety because in dry powder form, titanium dioxide is highly toxic when inhaled. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies the dry powder form of titanium dioxide as possibly carcinogenic to humans. It’s not yet clear, though, whether other forms of titanium dioxide, such as the nanoparticles used in sunscreen, also pose a risk for cancer. But here’s what we do know. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. One in every 3 cancers diagnosed worldwide is a skin cancer. UV radiation, through exposure to sunlight, is the major environmental factor responsible for skin cancers. Researchers at IARC estimate that from 65% to 95% of malignant skin melanomas are 14 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

caused by excess sun exposure. The pathways through which UV radiation exposure produces skin cancer (photocarcinogenesis) are well mapped. The research is very clear: use of sunscreens that absorb and/ or block UV radiation results in reduced damage to the skin’s DNA. Reducing DNA damage leads to reduce risk from skin cancer. Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated that consistent use of sunscreens results in lower likelihood of having a skin cancer. The sun itself is the”toxin” There is still no evidence that nanosized titanium dioxide or zinc oxide sunscreen actives pose any health risk (and certainly not in comparison to skipping, or skimping, on your SPF) but if you are concerned that titanium dioxide is a risk for you, choose a sunscreen product that does not have titanium dioxide as an ingredient. The important point is that you use SOME form of sunscreen along with other measures to protect your skin.

A Successful Cake Smash Photo Session by Laura Sanz Photography

Cake smash photography sessions have become a trend these days. They are done around the child’s first birthday to mark an important milestone and the photos may be used for birthday party invitations. Cake smashes can be a fun way to involve the whole family.Laura Sanz; lifestyle photographer, shares a few tips that she incorporates when shooting smash cake sessions. We hope you find them useful.

CAKE TYPE Buttercream icing or whipped cream, are the best choices. It is better to avoid fondant, since it is difficult for kids to break into. Also, you don’t have to go overboard with the cake; many times Laura uses iced sponge cakes from the supermarket. She likes using vanilla cake because it looks best in photos. Try to avoid chocolate or red velvet as they can seem less appetizing.

IDEAS & SETUP For Laura; planning events and creating beautiful dessert tables has been key to styling photo sessions and to achieve the editorial-magazine look and cake smashes. You can gather inspiration from beautiful dessert tables and use a few details for both the cake and background. Usually the less décor the better, as greater attention will be given to your child’s features.

HAVING YOUR CAKE AND EATING IT TOO If the baby doesn’t eat the cake or

16 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

is not too enthusiastic about eating it, it does not matter. Looking at the baby’s reaction is part of the fun in a cake smash. All babies react different . We can always take some gorgeous photos of the baby taking petite little bites. At the end, it’s all about fun! A FEW EXTRA TIPS: - Always have a cleanup plan. If there is not a bathtub handy, you should have your cleaning supplies ready and a set of clean clothes for your baby. - Decide on clothing and accessories in advance. It is important to know the outfit ahead of time so that backdrops/props/ location can coordinate with the look that the parent is going after. Laura personally likes minimal clothing for these sessions, since buttercream may look too messy.

Think about a birthday hat and a diaper cover or a fun skirt for baby girls. We hope you found these tips helpful. The most important part of the process is to have fun and make it an experience to cherish. If you need additional advice, help or if you prefer that an expert takes over, you may seek Laura’s help by visiting laura-sanz.com

Make mornings count with whole-grain Pancakes Most families don’t eat enough fiber on a daily basis, and breakfast is an easy place to sneak it in. You can make up batches of whole-grain pancake and waffle batter that last. Ingredients: - 2 cups whole-wheat flour (250 grams) - 2 tsp baking powder - ¼ tsp salt - 1 Tbsp granulated sugar - 3 eggs - 2 cups whole milk - 2 Tbsp melted butter (plus more butter for cooking) Preparation: 1.- Pre-heat your griddle to 375° or heat a nonstick sauté pan or skillet over medium heat. 2.- Pre-heat oven to 200°F. 3.- Sift together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. 4.- Beat eggs thoroughly. Add the eggs, melted butter and half the milk to the dry ingredients and mix gently until combined. Now stir in the remaining milk until the batter is the desired consistency. Don’t overmix! 5.- Melt butter on the griddle or pan. It should foam and sizzle. 6.- For each pancake, ladle ¼ cup of batter onto the griddle or pan. 7.- Cook until the tops of the pancakes are full of bubbles and the bottoms are golden brown. 8.- Flip the pancakes and cook until the tops are golden brown, then either serve right away or transfer to the oven to keep warm. Makes 12 pancakes.
