Retailers are changing a custom that for a long time has been an important feature upon the tradition of one of the last non-consumer holidays: Black Friday. All because they want to accommodate or satisfy some shoppers. It’s not an accommodation. It’s an intrusion masked as an accommodation. How far are we going to go? Are there any boundaries? What are we teaching our kids? Materialism isn’t good for our health. In fact, kids with lower materialism measures have higher self-esteem. So too is the opposite true. Kids with higher materialism measures have lower self-esteem. Kids will follow our lead. The choices we make with our money will impact our health, but also our children’s wellbeing, as well as, the values and habits they develop.

How much water do you need a day?
Water is an important structural component of skin cartilage, tissues and organs. For human beings, every part of the body is dependent on water. Our body comprises about 75% water: the brain has 85%, blood is 90%, muscles are 75%, kidney is 82% and bones are 22% water. The functions of our glands and organs will eventually deteriorate if they are not nourished with good, clean water. The average adult loses about 2.5 liters of water daily through perspiration, breathing and elimination. Symptoms of the body’s deterioration begin to appear when the body loses 5% of its total water volume. In a healthy adult, this is seen as fatigue and general discomfort, whereas for an infant, it can be dehydrating. In an elderly person, a 5% water loss causes the body chemistry to become abnormal, especially if the percentage of electrolytes is overbalanced with sodium.
One can usually see symptoms of aging, such as wrinkles, lethargy and even disorientation. Continuous water loss over time will speed up aging as well as increase risks of diseases. If your body is not sufficiently hydrated, the cells will draw water from your bloodstream, which will make your heart work harder. At the same time, the kidneys cannot purify blood effectively. When this happens, some of the kidney’s workload is passed on to the liver and other organs, which may cause them to be severely stressed. Additionally, you may develop a number of minor health conditions such as constipation, dry and itchy skin,
acne, nosebleeds, urinary tract infection, coughs, sneezing, sinus pressure, and headaches. So, how much water is enough for you? The minimum amount of water you need depends on your body weight. A more accurate calculation is to drink an ounce of water for every two pounds of body weight. 06 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

How much do you know about your digestive tract?
How many different foods does the average American eat on a regular basis? Researchers at the Washington Center for Obesity Research have found that most Americans eat no more than 30 different foods routinely. And they generally cycle through all of them in about four days. How long does it take food for to travel through the entire digestive system? As long as a train rides from Seattle to Los Angeles: about 30 hours. It takes food about 30 hours to travel the length of your digestive system. Researchers use foods like corn and peanuts as “marker-foods” to determine gut transit time because they are difficult to digest, and often pass through the entire digestive system partially undigested. How does sniffing help improve your sense of smell? It sends more air to the body’s smell center. The human body detects smell through an area of tissue called the olfactory epithelium, which is located at the top of the nasal cavity. During normal breathing, only 10 percent of the air we 08 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com
inhale makes it all the way up to that part of the nose. But when humans sniff, typically for an average of 1.6 seconds, we suck in about two cups of air. Sniffing sucks more air up to the smell center, which helps us discern differences in scents. True or false: The human stomach can digest itself. • True The human stomach does digest itself, but the stomach lining has evolved to regenerate itself completely every few days. Which of the following statements about flatulence is NOT true? • Flatulence in women has higher concentrations of stinky hydrogen sulfide than men. • A man passes more gas at one time, on average, than a woman. • Beans are the most common contributor to foul-smelling flatulence • Beans are indeed a magical fruit, but they are not the major cause of foul-smelling flatulence. The foods that cause the most foul-smelling gas are red meat, cruciferous vegetables, garlic, dried fruits and beer. • Among people of Asian descent, about 75 percent are unable to digest lactose, causing painful gas.

Energy Saving Tips for Winter 1. Save up to 10% on your heating bill by programming your thermostat to a lower temperature at night and after you leave for work. 68°F is recommended to maintain a comfortable temperature and be able to save on your electricity usage. 2. Wash clothes in cold water. Heating the water in a washer uses 90% of the energy used to wash clothes. According to Energy Star, the average household can save $30-$40 annually by switching to cold water. 3. Insulate your water heater and all water piping. 4. Use sunlight instead of turning on the heat, where applicable. 5. Have your furnace and ductwork inspected annually. Loose, broken AC ductwork accounts for 15-35% of a home’s energy loss. 6. Caulk, seal, and weather-strip openings from your home to the outside. 7. Repair and weather-strip air leaks 10 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com
in the home as 10-25% of energy used to heat homes escapes through air leaks. 8. Unless it is equipped specifically for home heating, use your fireplace sparingly. Warm air escapes through the chimney. Close the damper when you’re not using your fireplace. 9. When using your wood-burning fireplace, split wood into pieces that are 10-15cm (4-6-inches) in diameter. The wood will burn cleanlier with more surface area exposed to the flame. 10. Avoid heating unused rooms by closing doors and warm air supply registers. 11. Do not block energy sources with curtains, furniture or the like. 12. Avoid keeping the door fridge open for long periods of time: you can save up to 5% of energy. Let hot foods cool down completely before placing in the fridge. Thaw food inside the refrigerator, taking advantage of the energy that has been used for freezing.

Holiday weight gain during the six-week winter period: fact or fiction?
Obesity continues to rise and controversy remains regarding the underlying specific causes of this trend. On average, weight gain during the 6-week winter period from Thanksgiving through New Year averaged only 0.82 pounds (0.37 kg). However, weight gain was greater among individuals who were overweight or obese, and 14% gained more than 5 pounds (2.3 kg) Just as adults are struggling, statistics show that our kids are having a hard time too. They are getting heavier and are experiencing obesity-related health problems at very young ages. Parents face not an easy job when it comes to getting kids to be more active and to eat healthy foods. Like adults, many kids face pressures of too much work and not enough time for leisure-time activity, and the influence of television, video games or surfing the net often keeps them indoors. Ultimately, parents are responsible for helping kids to make proper choices, and making sure there are healthy foods at home is a great place to start. Here are some tips to help your child eat smart and play hard: 1. Keep a bowl of fresh fruit on the kitchen counter .By making these items convenient and easy to consume, kids are more likely to eat them. 2. Teach your kids how to read food labels, and make comparisons 12 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com
between items, try to find healthy alternatives 3. Repeated exposure does work – so keep offering foods, and encourage kids to try “just a bite”. It may take more than a dozen tries, but it’s worth the effort. 4. It’s difficult for busy parents to put a balanced meal on the table every night, but kids need to know that their parents value their own nutritional intake. 5. Help your kids (and yourself) with portion control. Serve foods from the kitchen, rather than placing serving dishes family-style on the table, to avoid taking “just another spoonful”. 6. Let your kids know the value of an active lifestyle. Go for a bike ride, a jog and make sure they know how good you feel when you get your blood pumping. 7. Keep sodas, fruit juices and chips out of the house; try making instead smoothies, so keep milk, fresh or frozen fruit and some protein powder around.

Stained Glass Hearts It’s hard to believe these heart-shaped sun catchers are made from only wax paper and melted crayons! Best for kids age: 3 and up What you’ll need: Red, pink, yellow and orange crayons, wax paper, crayon sharpener, iron, cardboard, pencil, hole puncher, scissors and ribbon How to make it: Peel the paper off the crayons and sharpen them over a piece of wax paper. Then, place another sheet over the shavings. Iron the paper at the lowest setting until the shavings have melted. Let cool. Draw a heart on the wax paper and cut it out. Punch a hole and tie a ribbon at the top so you can hang it in the window.
Heart-Shaped Potato Stamps Here’s a use for a potato that’s about past its shelf life. Great for cards, picture frames, even tee shirts if you use fabric paint Best for kids age: Any age What you’ll need: Cardstock, paint, potato, heart shaped cookie cutter, paper and a small pairing knife How to make it: Begin by cutting your potato in half near the widest portion. Using your small heart shaped cookie cutter, insert it into the potato until the top is flush with the flat end of the potato. Adults, using a small sharp pairing knife, cut into the potato about 1/4 of an inch down until you feel your knife touch the cookie cutter. Continue cutting all the way around the potato until the waste is easily removed. Make sure to press your stamp firmly on the paper, but don’t rock it back and forth too much 16 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com
