The Importance of Orthodontics Gustavo Salas. DDS, MS

Orthodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing, preventing and treating dentofacial alterations, through the application of different forces using a variety of fixed or removable appliances. Dental and skeletal abnormalities can be corrected to give the patient a more harmonious aesthetic and functional look. Although many people think that orthodontics is just moving teeth around for an aesthetic purpose, we would like to clarify that this is not entirely true because we can also correct and improve many functional on the and dental oronasal system. Orthodontists use a number of tools that are essential to make a correct diagnosis and to carry out the best treatment plan. These include taking several X-rays and studies obtaining digital or plaster models of the teeth, computerized analysis extraoral and intraoral photographs and comprehensive analysis of the cephalometric (Radiography). The tooth movement is done with a series of devices suitable for this purpose. Major appliances are called brackets (braces), which are made of metal and are attached to the tooth to move with different types of wire. Science has advanced so that 06 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

there are now brackets that are not metal but are transparent or there are even some that simulate tooth color, which are more accepted by patients, especially adults, who do not like to look like “adolescents”. On the other hand, removable aligners have gained in popularity. Invisalign aligners are a series of invisible, removable, and very comfortable to wear brackets, which are made from very advanced technology of digitized images in 3D. A high index of the world population suffers from some form of dental alteration including tooth positioning or relationship and dentomaxilares structures. These alterations commonly called “crooked teeth” can cause various disorders in patients who suffer, from inconvenience to bite, difficulty in pronunciation or just serious aesthetic problems that often affect social life and their general self confidence. Remember that your smile is the first thing people see. It instantly portrays your personality and selfconfidence. Gustavo Salas. The Tendencies of Humans Having discovered Dr. Maria Montessori’s internationally proven educational philosophy — early in life, I still find myself experiencing daily, “ah-ha” learning moments working with the students and parents in my school. So much of what takes place in an authentic Montessori environment is predicated on the guiding key principles and characteristics that Dr. Montessori developed after many years of observing children. Montessori is an educational philosophy that supports a student’s innate curiosity and freedom to question, encouraging adaptability and independence. A true Montessori education provides students with the skills needed and offers the opportunity for authentic learning. Authentic learning focuses on real-world multidisciplinary problems and solutions, which is an important educational strategy for equipping students with 21st century skills. Although authentic learning is considered a broad educational practice, through current research, the following common components have emerged: 1. Learning activities represent real-life problems often with a personal frame of reference; 2. Basic knowledge and complex metacognitive skills combine to solve the open-ended problems; 3. Varied sources and perspectives 10 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

By Munir Shivji

are incorporated into the solutions; 4. Having a community of learners facilitate the work. Authentic learning happens within true Montessori environments. It is helpful to understand Dr. Montessori’s Tendencies of Humans and how they are relevant to the needs of education today. Human Tendencies offers a framework for understanding human development through eleven unique traits that influence us across our lifetime. These tendencies exist within and across the planes of development. In Montessori philosophy, basic human tendencies are the key to appreciating how and why a Montessori classroom calls out to the very soul of the child and provides the opportunities for authentic learning. Dr. Maria Montessori’s Human Tendencies 1. Exploration. Humans are naturally curious. They love to use their senses to learn more about the intriguing world around them. 2. Orientation. People want to know their relationship to the environment around them. When people enter a new environment, they naturally want to look at and touch everything around them. 3. Order. People prefer order to chaos and confusion. Order brings predictability and security.

4. Communication. Humans want to generally convey thoughts, feelings, and information to each other. Communication is the link of understanding between people. 5. Activity. People generally like to stay busy by exploring, experiencing and practicing. 6. Manipulation. Humans need to take hold of their environment to understand it. People work with their hands; this is the connection between learning and doing. 7. Work. Humans feel worthwhile through their work. People work in cooperation with others and with their environment. Work leads to a feeling of accomplishment and self-respect. 8. Repetition. People learn through practice and reach closer to perfection through repetition. Even after mastery occurs, humans may continue to repeat the activity for the pleasure of just doing so. 9. Exactness. Humans seek to be particular and precise in their work. People adjust, refine and improve. 10. Abstraction and Creativity. Humans are able to visualize, feel and express emotions that are not tangible. Humans are creative. They can imagine and think beyond the concrete and real. 11. Self- Perfection. Once humans have explored, manipulated, and

worked in their environment, they can desire to improve. They find satisfaction in personal growth. Humans are masters of their own minds and bodies. When you eliminate any interferences to a child’s natural tendencies, the child will flourish and shock you with their thirst of understanding, their innovative thinking, and their immeasurable curiosity. The need for our children to develop 21st century skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, executive functioning, mindfulness and well-being has become more important today as they face the challenges to come in our rapidly changing world and future. Discover what an authentic Montessori education can do for your child. - Munir Shivji is the Executive Director of The Institute of Montessori Education and Head of The Innovative School both in Houston, Texas. He is also a key consultant for Educational Training & Consulting (ETC Montessori). He serves as a Professional Director on the board of the American Montessori Society.

Mr. Perez, The Dentist Mouse Once upon a time Mr. Perez, who was a little mouse in town, lived with his family in a hole in the wall of a building. The family lived next to a bakery; at night he and his father would take flour and everything they could find to eat. One day he heard a commotion and went upstairs. He was a curious mouse and climbed through the pipes to reach the first floor. It looked like someone was going to install a new business there. Next day Perez went back up to see what it was all about, and found something he liked very much. They had put a dental clinic. Thereafter every day he rose to look at everything that Dr. Jose had. He study, observed and learned, and wrote all he could in a small cardboard book. After practicing with his family, her mother’s teeth were shining clean and his sisters’’ toothache cured with a little medicine. He was becoming famous. Mice came from everywhere to b e treated. Field mice with bags full of food , city mice with hats and canes, small, large, fat, skinny ... All wanted him to fix their mouths. But then elderly mice had a bigger problem. They had no teeth and wanted to eat all they had eaten 14 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

when young. Mr. Perez thought how he could help these mice that trusted him. As usual, he went to the dental clinic to look for ideas. There he saw Dr. Jose putting new teeth to an old man. Those teeth were not from people; they came from a large factory. But those teeth were huge and did not served him at all. Then, when he was about to go home without finding the solution, a child appeared at the clinic with his mother. The doctor had to remove a baby tooth for another tooth will quickly go out strong and big. The doctor took it off and gave it to him. The mouse had found the solution: “I’ll go to the house of the child and I’ll buy the tooth”, he thought. He followed him around the city and when he finally came home, he found a large cat and could not enter. Mr. Perez waited until everyone was asleep and then entered the child’s room. The child had put it under his pillow. The poor Mr. Perez had a hard time finding the tooth, but finally found him and left the boy a nice gift. The

next morning the boy saw the gift and was thrilled and told all his friends from school. And from that day, all the children leave their baby teeth under their pillow. Mr. Perez collects them and leaves them a nice gift in return. The End.

Puss in Boots Once upon a time an old miller who had three sons when approaching the time of his death he called his three sons. “Look, I want to divide up the little that I have before I die.” To the older one he left the mill, to the middle one the donkey and to the youngest one the last thing he had, the cat. Soon after the father died. The youngest one grabbed some of the boots that had his father, put them on the cat and both went to travel the world. Along t h e way they sat down to rest under the shade of a tree. While the master slept, the cat took one of the bags and filled it with g r a s s and left the bag open. Then came a rabbit that slipped inside the bag. The

cat pulled the rope around and the rabbit was trapped inside the bag. He headed for the palace to give it to the king. He said, “I come from my master, The Marquis of Carrabas that sends this gift”. Days passed and the cat was still sending gifts to the king on behalf of his master. One day, the cat had an idea. “Master! I know how we can improve our lives. Just follow my instructions.” The master did not quite understand what the cat asked, but he had nothing to lose, so he agreed. “Fast, Master! Take off your clothes and dive into the river.” Royal carriages were approaching, with the king and his daughter. Upon approaching the cat screamed, “Help! Help! The Marquis of Carrabas is drowning! Help”. The king heard the cat and asked the guards to help him out of the water he ordered to dress the Marquis. When The Marquis climbed into the carriage the princess was amazed at the beauty of the Marquis. Puss in Boots, always ahead of things had asked the people to tell the king that the fields belonged to the Marquis and so they did. The only thing my master needs is a castle, so he remembered the ogre’s castle and decided to visit him.

“Lord Ogre! I heard of the powers you have, but I do not believe them so I came to see if it’s true.” The ogre enraged from the cat’s disbelief, took a breath and haps! He became a fierce lion. “Very well”, ‘said the cat, “but that was easy because you’re an ogre, almost as big as a lion. But you can not become something small? Like a fly, not better a mouse, can you?” The ogre became a little mouse and before he knew it hasp’s! The cat pounced on it and ate it.

his daughter and share kingdoms. He accepted and since then the cat and the Marquis had lived happily ever after.

At that moment cat heard the carriage passing. He went out the door screaming: “Master! Come in!” the King was marveled at all the possessions of the Marquis and proposed to marry

The Ugly Duckling Every summer, Mrs. Pata laid and nested her eggs. When the eggs were ready to hatch all her friends in the yard were eager to see her ducklings, which were always the most handsome of all. The day came when the eggs started to hatch and all gathered to the nest to see them for the first time. One by one they were coming up to six precious ducklings, each accompanied by the cheers of Mrs. Pata and her friends. She was so pleased that took her a while to realize that an egg, the largest of the seven, was not yet open. All turned their attention to the egg that remained intact; also the newly hatched ducklings were hoping to see some sign of movement. Soon, the egg began to break but oh, surprise! Much more ugly and ungainly than the other six. Mrs. Pata was dying of shame for having had an ugly duckling and brushed it with the wing while paying attention to the other six. The duckling was very sad because he began to realize that nobody wanted him ... Days passed and his appearance did not improve, on the contrary, worsen, it grew very fast and was skinny and clumsy. His brothers played heavy jokes and laughed constantly calling him ugly and awkward. The duckling decided that he should find a place where he could have friends who really liked him despite his disastrous appearance. Next day he fled through a hole in the fence. Went to another farm, where an old 22 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

woman picked him up and the ugly duckling believed he had found a place where he would finally be taken care off, but he was wrong too, because the old lady was bad and just wanted the poor duckling to be served as a first plate. Soon after he was running away again. Winter came and the ugly duckling was almost starving. He had to dig into the ice and snow and had to flee from hunters who wanted to shoot him. At last spring came and he went to the pond where he found the most beautiful birds he had ever seen. They were elegant, graceful and moved with such distinction. Anyway, since he had nothing to lose he approached them and asked them if he could swim with them. The swans answered – “of course, you’re one of us!” The duck replied, “Do not scoff at me! I know I’m ugly and skinny, but do not laugh at me.” The swans replied, “Look at your reflection in the pond and see how we do not lie”. He looked in the transparent water in disbelieve and what he saw left him amazed. During the winter the awkward ugly duckling had turn into a beautiful and elegant swan. That was how the ugly duckling joined his real family and lived happily ever after.

The Little Vain Ratita Rat Once upon a time, there was a little rat that was very vain. One day the rat was sweeping her house when suddenly on the ground she saw something very shiny, it was a gold coin. The rat picked it up and began to think what she would buy with the coin. “ I know I will buy candy ... Oh, no my teeth will hurt me”, she said. “Well I will buy cakes” ... “Oh, no my tummy will hurt me”. “ I know I’ll buy a red bow for my little tail”, she finally said. The rat kept her money in her pocket and went to the market. Once in the market asked the shopkeeper for a piece of her best red ribbon. She bought it and returned to her house. The next day when the rat stood still se managed to put her bow on her tiny tail and went to the balcony of her house. Then was a rooster passing by that impressed with the beauty of the little rat, says: “Ratita, Rat you are so pretty, will you marry me?” And the rat said to him “I do not know, do not know. What noise do you make at night? And the rooster says, cock-a-doodle-

doo, cock-a-doodle-doo. “Oh no, I will not marry you. I do not like the noise you make.” “You are too noisy”. The Rooster left and later on a dog appeared. Ratita, Rat you are so pretty. Would you marry me? What type of noise do you make at night? .Woof, Woof. “Oh no, I will not marry you that noise scares me”. The dog left and a pig appeared. “Ratita, rat you are so pretty, will you marry me”? And the rat said “I do not know, do not know”. ‘What noise do you make at night”? - Oink, oink.“Oh no, I will not marry you that is a very ordinary noise”. The pig disappears and suddenly a white cat appears, and says: Ratita, rat you are so beautiful will you marry me? . And the rat said: - “Do not know; do not know what noise are you doing at night”? . And the kitten with soft, sweet voice says: - Meow, meow. – “Oh yes I will marry you that your voice is very sweet”. And so the rat married the white cat with sweet voice. The two were together happily ever after. www.imaginekidsmagazine.com 23 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com 23

La Importancia de la Ortodoncia Gustavo Salas. DDS, MS

-Yo no sé.
