MI FIESTA 38 Sophía Sachade Why do some children succeed while others fail? Schools, family dynamics, character and the way that early childhood experiences affect their emotional and physical well being, last long after a child is grown and play a very important role in determining the child future success. Numerous studies support the concept that children brought up in stressful environments are at a higher risk of repeating the same mistakes as their parents. The good news is that intervention - if it is the right kind- can make a positive impact on the child. The qualities that matter the most have to do with character: skills like perseverance, curiosity, optimism, and self-control are essential elements to achieve success. “If you give people tools, [and they use them] their natural ability and their curiosity, they will develop things in ways that will surprise you, much beyond what you might have expected.” Bill Gates

Why you need to Choose a Pediatric Dentist for your Children What is a Pediatric Dentist? Pediatric dentistry is the specialty of dentistry that focuses on the needs of infants, children and adolescents, including persons with special health care needs. Pleasant visits to the dental office promote the establishment of trust and confidence in your child that will last a lifetime. Our goal is to help all children feel good about visiting the dentist and teach them how to care for their teeth. From our special office designs to our communication style, our main concern is what is best for your child. Why a Pediatric Dentist? Children are not just small adults. They are not always able to be patient and cooperative during a dental exam. Pediatric dentists know how to examine and treat children in ways that make them comfortable. Why are primary teeth (baby teeth) Important? A healthy smile can help children feel good about themselves and the way they look to others. It is very important that primary teeth are kept in place and healthy until they are lost naturally. These teeth serve a number of critical functions such as maintaining good nutrition by permitting your child to chew properly, and helping the permanent teeth by saving space for them. 06 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

The Importance of sleeping with your infant child
Co-sleeping can further both trust and independence. Research has revealed something very interesting: children who cosleep do not need replacement security figures as child sucking thumb, carrying around a treasured blanket or teddy . Children feel more secure as a result of being close to their caregivers. Scientific studies have shown that a family who sleeps together actually enters the different stages of sleep almost simultaneously.
Science is finally beginning to discover what babies have known all along: Babies are designed to sleep with their parents. And parents are designed to sleep with their babies. At the Mother-Baby Behavioral Sleep Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, anthropologist James McKenna, Ph.D., watches an intimate dance unfold. It’s a dance in which there’s no leader, no follower, and yet almost seamless 08 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com
choreography. A mother and father sleep with their baby between them in a large bed in the laboratory’s comfortable bedroom. It’s similar to the way they sleep at home, only with infrared video cameras monitoring their sleep stages, zooming in on every roll of an eyeball, every twitch of muscle, all night long. They’re all dreaming at the same time. Moments later they enter a stage of light sleep together: The mother stirs, awakens for just a moment, and drifts back to sleep, moving her head a little to the left, her arm to the right. The baby stirs, moves her head to the left, her arm to the right. Then the father follows with the same pattern. The synchronization that happens when parents sleep beside their baby is remarkable. In contrast if a baby is placed in another room, it’s like putting a wall between a pair of ballroom dancers. Everybody reverts to his/ her own rhythms, their sleep cycles coinciding only by chance.

No Summer Bummer this Year! By Munir Shivji
The faculty and I at The Innovative School are currently developing and planning a meaningful Montessoriinspired summer program for families. This process reminded me to also encourage families to understand their role in creating and offering meaningful, reality-based experiences for their children. Parent, teacher, child, and school relationships are very important in a student’s life. An alliance based on mutual respect and support will enhance all individuals’ understanding, knowledge, and insight and offer a cohesive, prepared learning environment at both home and school. As Montessori is a philosophy of life not merely an academic educational methodology, we not only enroll children we enroll families. Parental involvement is essential. Summer is a great time to create momentous family connections. Families at our school are encouraged to participate in activities that involve the whole family. Summer is a time for relaxation and rest for our children, but for a parent, this season can be overwhelming. Before your family has a chance to say, “I’m bored!” plan a meaningful summer using some of these great educational ideas. I have to admit, many of the suggestions below are taken from our school’s summer program. These ideas can be easily adapted for home and will assist you in ensuring a peaceful, happy and safe summer. • Explore a local museum. The Houston Museum District 10 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com
consists of 19 museums within a 1.5 mile radius of the Mecom Fountain. The Houston Museum District Association is dedicated to collaborative efforts that maximize use of the artistic, scientific and educational resources. • Create a family newsletter together and distribute it to your extended family and friends. • Play in the dirt, dig for worms, look for lizards, and hunt for frogs and tadpoles. Houston has 49,643 acres of total park space! Two great local places to visit include our Arboretum or Estuary. • Bring books alive and start a family book club. Suggestions include: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. • Take a stress-free road trip and explore the Texas Hill country. Start your Texas tour of America’s hippest state capital, Austin! Stop in Lockhart on your way to Fredericksburg. Outside Kerrville follow the Guadalupe River to Bandera (the self-proclaimed cowboy capital of the world). Finish the drive in San Antonio, where many of the most iconic sights -including the historic Alamo and the River Walk -- are free. • Start a family tradition. Kick off the summer with a BBQ. This is a great way to welcome the beautiful summer weather and BBQ season. Set up outside and have everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, water, hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, and ice cream. Have some games ready for kids like water balloon tosses, shoe scramble, and potato sack races.
• Volunteer as a family. Anyone in the Houston area can go to www. houstontx.gov and under “I want to” click on Volunteer in Houston. There, you can see the many opportunities available in our city across an array of services. • Practice the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle). Houston’s reputation is quickly growing for its approach to green initiatives. You can also launch a family container garden or create a natural table. • Pick berries, hike, catch bugs and bird watch. A few local places to visit include, Blackberries of Houston and the Houston Zoo. The City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department maintains 128 miles of trails in all parts of the city. The most accessible hiking trail in Houston is in Terry Hershey Park, a part of the larger Memorial Park system. For the more adventurous hikers, nature may have a few surprises in Brazos Bend Park. • Finger Paint, Sculpt with Clay, Dry Flowers, Make Jewelry or Playdough. The Museum of Fine Arts offers art instruction and every Sunday, offers a wonderful program for families: it’s ArtTime—Family Time. • Create a treasure hunt. The creative possibilities are endless, and the problem solving and teamwork skills involve and engage children of all ages. Parents.com offers ample ideas and custom templates to create your own family hunt! • Produce a family musical and perform it, conduct a family talent show and host a dance party. Children love to show off their talents to anyone who will watch
them. Why not channel all that energy and enthusiasm into a family show! Visit www.melissaanddoug. com, the website offers wonderful tips for hosting a memorable family show. • Make mazes and puzzles, paint rocks and create a rock garden. Are you aware, Discount School Supply has the lowest prices on art and craft supplies for parents of young children. Check them out online for more artsy ideas! • Explore the neighborhood, fly kites and feed the ducks or geese. George Bush Park, Herman Park and Miller Outdoor Theater are great outdoor exploration destinations! As with most things your kids will have more fun if you participate and join in on the fun as a family. Summer’s short so get out, get wet, grubby, laugh and enjoy it. Don’t forget to capture your memories by daily journaling and photography - end your summer by creating a family memory book together! This type of parental involvement will truly last a lifetime as you teach your child invaluable life skills. Munir Shivji is the Head of The Innovative School in west Houston. He holds a MACTE accredited Early Childhood AMS (American Montessori Society) credential and an AMS Montessori Administrative credential from the Center for Montessori Education in New York. Munir also serves as Executive Director for The Institute of Montessori Education. iSwimband a device that can, quite simply, make the difference between life and death by Shane J. Christ Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1-14. Texas Department of Family & Protective Services stats show that 82 children drowned in Texas in 2013. Since 2010 there have been over 324 children that have drowned in the state of Texas, 163 of these have occurred in residential backyards. As our unusually cold winter in Texas comes to an end we all are looking forward to warmer outdoor activities. Recreational water activities are always top of our list. Backyard pools, local lakes, rivers, and water parks are always popular meeting places. Water should be enjoyed by all, but also respected by all. The CDC states that 82% of the time when a child drowns in a recreational body of water there is typically an adult with in 5 to 10’ from the child, 90% of the time is one or both of the parents. Pool Safety USA recommends following the tips below for a safer swimming season: 1. Assign an adult to constantly watch children around water. 2. Learn to recognize when a swimmer is in trouble. 3. Children who can not swim should always wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved Life Jacket 4. Learn to swim, and DO NOT swim alone. 5. Use multiple layers of protection on all pools and hot tubs. 6. Always check pool/hot tub first for missing children. 7. Protect infants & toddlers from water danger in tubs, toilets, kiddie 12 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com
pools, coolers, & buckets. 8. Learn CPR, refresh skills & keep certification current. There are two kinds of layers that can protect pools and hot tubs, passive, and active. Passive layers consist of Removable Pool Safety Fence, Pool Safety Nets, Manual Pool Safety Covers, Pool Alarms, and Automatic Pool Covers. Pool Safety USA installs all of these passive layers of protection across Texas. “There is only one active layer of protection, and it is called the iSwimband “, says Shane J. Christ. (www. iswimband.com). The iSwimband is a wearable accessory which will alert your Bluetooth-enabled phone, tablet, or music player if a swimmer has been submerged beyond a preset time limit, or if a non-swimmer (such as a toddler) enters the water. While nothing replaces diligent human supervision, iSwimband provides an extra layer of protection in and around the water. iSwimband gives parents a tool to actively monitor children while in the water. Key attribute, it is portable. The iSwimband will be sold at local retailers across Texas, just in time for National Drowning Prevention Month, starting May 1st. INGREDIENTS ( Makes 16) • 8 full size biscuits of shredded wheat • 1 handful mini marshmallow, chopped in half • 6 dried apricots, chopped • 200 g cooking chocolate • 48 chocolate mini eggs
Easter Chocolate Nests
TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS Make half a batch using milk chocolate and half a batch using white METHOD 1. Break up the shredded wheat into a large mixing bowl using your fingers. You don’t want any lumps. Add the chopped marshmallows and apricots and give it all a stir. 2. Break the chocolate into small pieces and put in a heatproof bowl and melt in the microwave on full power for 30 seconds. Remove and stir and then continue to melt in 30 second bursts, stirring in between until smooth and fully melted. You could also melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. 3. Pour the shredded wheat mixture into the bowl of melted chocolate and then mix with two metal spoons until everything is evenly coated. 4. Put 16 cake cases into a couple of bun trays so the nests keep their shape. 5. Using a teaspoon, fill the cake cases with the mixture, pressing each one down in the center to create the space for the mini eggs. 6. Nestle 3 mini eggs in the center of each nest and then pop in the fridge to set 18 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

Praising Effort Vs. Praising Ability. Why most parents are turning their children into non-learners?
One of the problems that can occur when parents (and teachers) heap too much praise on children is that they tend to focus on giving praise for ability rather than effort. Instead of being encouraging, studies show that this type of praise has the opposite of the intended effect. Praising children for innate abilities like intelligence, athletic ability, artistic ability, etc. results in children becoming less motivated and more afraid to make mistakes. Praising children for the effort they put into doing something rather than for how good they are at it, will lead to those children becoming more motivated to keep trying and learning. For example, if a child just finished a gymnastics routine, praising their effort would look like this: “You practiced a lot to learn that routine. All that effort sure paid off because your spins are fast and your jumps are higher than before” rather than “You are a great gymnast. I’m sure that you’ll win the competition.” Children will assume that if they need to try hard, they must not be 20 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com
intelligent. Or, they will infer that if they really are so bright then they must not need to work hard. The belief that heightened ability eliminates the need for effort is one of the worst beliefs children can have. Students praised for intelligence usually chose tasks in their comfort zone so they would not put themselves at risk of losing that positive judgment. In contrast an overwhelming majority of students praised for their effort chose a difficult task they could learn from. It is quite a striking and consistent finding. As soon as problems become difficult students praised for their intelligence lost confidence. Students whose process is praised maintain their confidence, remain engaged during difficult problems and keep gaining in performance on IQ tests. Praising intelligence put kids in more of a fixed mindset compared to praising effort. But the most amazing discovery is that praising intelligence instantly turns children into non-learners.
