Get ready for the Archibald Prize It’s going to be a big month at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery in Windsor, with its blockbuster exhibition for the year, the 2016 Archibald Prize, on show throughout June. Awarded to the best painting of a notable Australian, the Archibald Prize is a who’s who of Australian culture, from politicians and celebrities to sporting heroes and artists. The Prize awards $100,000 prize money for the winning artist, and finalists are exhibited at the Art Gallery of New South Wales before embarking on a year-long regional tour. In conjunction with the exhibition, there will be a people’s choice prize of $500, sponsored by ANZ. All you have to do is vote for your favourite work of art and your name goes into the draw. One of the most popular exhibits is the portrait of Deng Adut by Nick Stathopoulos. . Stathopoulos approached Adut after being moved by an advertisement he saw for Western

Nick Stathopoulos will be giving a talk at the gallery from 24 May to 10 June. Also giving a talk is Kirsty Neilson, whose side-on portrait of Garry McDonald, titled There's no humour in darkness, has been very much admired for its honest and sympathetic depiction of a man who has known severe depression. For this exhibition the gallery will be open every day 10am – 4pm and, by arrangement with the Art Gallery of NSW, is a ticketed event – pay at the door. Adults $5, Teens $3, Family $15 (2 adults and 3 teens), Gallery Members & Children 12 and under FREE. Saturday 24 June 2017 The 24th Winter Magic Festival will be held Saturday 24 June Katoomba, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia. The Winter Magic Festival is a free, annual community event, celebrated around the winter solstice in Katoomba. The winter solstice in 2017 (Yule) falls on June 21st, 2:23pm AEST. The Winter Magic Festival is the Blue Mountains’ highest profile and most anticipated annual event. It is a weekend when artists, musicians, dancers, drummers, choirs, stalls and the community take over one of Australia's most famous towns. The streets are lined with market stalls and everybody who attends is encouraged to dress in costume. The Parade is full of fun and amazing costumes. The Winter Magic Festival is a NotFor-Profit event that is self-supporting and is run entirely by community volunteers although it does have its sponsors. Parramatta was founded in 1788 by Governor Arthur Phillip as a western outlying farm colony of Sydney. Initially it was called Rose Hill and was renamed Parramatta, an Aboriginal word meaning “head of waters,” or “the place where eels lie down”, the year after it was proclaimed a town in 1790. It was incorporated as a municipality in 1861, became a city in 1938 and was expanded in 1948, 1959, and 1972 by the inclusion of surrounding centres.

Mid Mountains The Magic of an Artist’s Studio Use the Upper Blue Mountains Arts Trail to capture that amazing feeling when you enter an artist’s studio; the feeling of crossing over into a very special place. Artists in their studios, change one kind or reality into another. Visit a studio, step over a threshold, pass through a gateway, cross a border and travel into the unknown. Artists’ studios are an in between place; where there is potential for something wonderful to happen. Studios exhibit quilts, ceramic sculpture, metal work, textiles, photographs, mosaics, mixed media artwork, digital art, felting, furniture and woodwork, leatherwork and all genres of visual arts including acrylic, encaustic and oil. Furniture maker Peter Adams, visual artist Linda Callaghan, and ceramic artist Patricia Smart are three artists who will be in their studios to talk to you about the effort that goes into making magic. Their work in magic-making includes; generation of concept through to
development of design, experimental use of materials, practising details of new techniques and finally the accomplishment of a finished work for sale. Whatever object you decide to buy will be enhanced by hearing the story of its creation. Studio space allows artists to inhabit a reality they had not been in earlier, a kind of magic garden, where items are transformed beyond ordinary appearance. When an artist steps over the threshold into their studio, a blank canvas becomes a rockface; wet clay is transfigured into a dancer; sheets of metal become globes; unturned wood turns into a platter; shards of glass are resurrected as constellations and photography turns light and shadow into a familiar face. Come along the Upper Blue Mountains Arts Trail on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18th June. Take up the opportunity to meet artists and to experience the magic of creativity. World Heritage Artists in Residence
In recognition of the significance and outstanding beauty of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre launched The World Heritage Artists in Residence Program. This program consists of a 6-week artist residency for one artist at Bilpin international ground for Creative initiatives, sponsored by the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre, to create a new body of work in response to the World Heritage Area followed by an exhibition at the Blue Mountains City
CLIFF
Art Gallery. Emerging, mid-career and established visual artists working in any medium from Australia and overseas are encouraged to apply. The aim of the program is to support excellence and innovation in the development of new work and to facilitate professional development opportunities for emerging, mid-career and established artists in a nurturing environment. The residency encourages artists to draw inspiration from one of the world’s most environmentally and historically significant locations – The Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. The Blue Mountains have always been of inspiration for many well-known artists, who produced works which are now held in Australia’s most significant galleries and collections. The World Heritage Artist in Residency Program provides a platform for artists to create new, quality work, to preserve and interpret the history of the Blue Mountains, to educate current and future generations and to continue the great legacy of artists who have been inspired by the Blue Mountains. Artists are required to submit a concept proposal in their application form, outlining what they are planning to produce for the exhibition at the Blue Mountains City Art Gallery. Applications close Friday 2 June 2017.
Graham Hallett Exhibition Lost Bear Gallery presents an exhibition of oil paintings by Blue Mountains artist Graham Hallett, from 1 - 19 June 2017. Hallett paints the local landscape, yet works from the studio, creating his works with a unique process blending observation, field sketches and imagination. Rather than being bound to a literal portrayal of a particular scene, Hallett instead uses the landscape as a visual vocabulary that can be drawn upon. There is a renewed intensity within

Blackheath at 1065m abve sea level is 114 km from Sydney and most famous for its November Rhododendron Festival. The Blackheath Rhododendron Gardens are in Baccante Street. The town’s shopping centre has a delightfully relaxed village atmosphere. Blackheath is filled with natural beauty and there are many breathtaking views and bush walks to experience. Blackheath is full of colonial history. The first building in Blackheath was "The Scotch Thistle Inn" erected by Andrew Gardner in 1831. The Inn was visited by the renowned scientist Charles Darwin in 1836. The site for "The Scotch Thistle Inn" was located slightly south of the present Gardners Inn Hotel. On the outside of the famous Victory Theatre antique centre is one of the town’s proudest displays, a colourful mural designed by local artist Jenny Kee and painted in 1985 by members of the local community on behalf of the Blackheath Area Neighbourhood Centre. It has been recently refurbished by this proud community.

Antiques and Collectables Fair Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd July Blackheath
Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd July 2017 will see the Blackheath Community Centre Hall transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when around twenty dealers from all around the country combine for the sixteenth Annual Blue Mountains Antiques Fair. Organised by antiques dealer Mick Dalton, this event has become a great drawcard for collectors both serious and novice alike. Traditionally the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together
under one roof, instead of travelling to twenty different establishments. Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector. The Blue Mountains Antiques Fair is also a fundraiser for The Rotary Club of Upper Blue Mountains who will be providing delicious light lunches and morning and afternoon teas throughout the weekend of the fair.
The Blue Mountains Antiques Fair is open to the public from 10:00am until 5:00pm on Saturday 1st July and from 10:00am until 4:00pm on Sunday 2nd July. Admission is $9.00 for adults and includes a lucky door prize ticket. Accompanied children are free. The Blackheath Community Centre Hall is situated on the Great Western Highway at Blackheath. (in the park opposite the railway station). There is plenty of parking available nearby and wheelchair access into the hall. For any further information please contact Mick Dalton on Mobile 0428 446 534.

Wallerawang/Portland In 1863 Thomas Murray selected land that would later become the site of Portland and he established the first lime kiln on the corner of Lime and Villiers Streets. Both Portland and Wallerawang are blessed with two historic public houses, schools, fascinating historic buildings, lakes and fishing streams, delightful little stores and friendly people. Portland is famous as the Town that built Sydney due to its Cement works and Wallerawang is famous for its Black Gold (coal) associations with Delta electricity. Portland’s Crystal Theatre hosts cinema as well as art shows and is famous for its street fairs. Portland’s big swimming pool has celebrated 50 years and Wallerawang’s historic old station’s heritage redevelopment has led to a florist, lolly shop, café and art gallery.
The signs of Yesteryear Portland a small town 2.5 hours drive from Sydney offers a step back in time with its original shop fronts still displaying working businesses including Gift shops, Cafes, Clubs Pubs and even an old fashioned theatre! In 2001 a group of sign writers known as the Letterheads met in Portland to recreate vintage advertising signs from 1895 to 1945 on the walls of local buildings throughout Portland. This has become a popular attraction to locals and visitors. In 2011 to celebrate 10 years the sign writers returned to add to the collection. This has now become an annual event. On the last weekend in October you will find Signs of Yesteryear being painted on Shop walls and buildings around Portland. The advertising signs can be seen from the street and are visible every day of the year. This is a great opportunity for photographers to capture the art work of sign writers and muralists reproducing advertising art works.

Toasty fires, roast dinners and puddings, decorations and Santa: the season the Blue Mountains, Lithgow and Oberon region is renowned for has arrived - Yulefest. ``Yulefest in this region is a magical time when this unique landscape is transformed into an icy winter wonderland yet our hotels, motor inns and guest houses, our restaurants and cafes become warm havens with roaring fires, hearty meals and hot drinks to retreat from the winter chill.’’ The history of Yulefest in the Blue Mountains began 37 years ago with a small group of Irish visitors relaxing in front of a fire after enjoying the crisp, clear winter climate. They commented on how the conditions and atmosphere reminded them of
Christmas celebrations back home, so a savvy hotelier offered to re-create a similar festive atmosphere and meal for his nostalgic Celtic guests. That first Yulefest held at the Mountain Heritage was a hit. Word spread throughout the region and before long, St Nick was doing the rounds twice a year. Today, many hotels, restaurants, motor inns and guest houses in the Blue Mountains, Lithgow and Oberon region offer Yulefest celebrations. Mountain Heritage Hotel and Spa Retreat, Katoomba (Saturday July 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29): Popularly regarded as the "home of Yulefest" in the region. There will be pre-dinner drinks from 6pm in the lounge followed by a fivecourse dinner and entertainment, visit
