From the Editor February Welcome to the Central Coast in February. February is a wonderful month to visit or for residents to explore this beautiful region. Lazy days can be spent in the scenic surrounds of the Central Coast, whether on the Coast or in the lush green valleys of the hinterland such as the Yarramalong Valley. I especially love this drive as you can visit the Macadamia Farm for lunch and a great Coffee or selection of Teas. Then on to Little Creek Cheese for a wonderful selection of fresh cheeses made on the premises . I love them all especially the one with the Sundried Tomatoes... YUM! One of the best ways to discover the Coast is with Coast Helicopters. It's very affordable and something you will enjoy often as you relay your experience to friends and family. I cannot think of a better gift for the one you love especially for Valentine’s Day.

Kibble Park by Night this summer As part of the Gosford Councils 2012 Summer in the City Program, the heart of Gosford CBD is set to come alive with inspiration and wonderment at night, beneath the stars in Kibble Park. The aim of the Summer in the City festival is to provide great events that engage local residents and attract new visitors to Kibble Park, promote local business and trade. If successful this festival will transform the perception of our city from a dormant summer park to an exciting and entertaining centre of cultural ideas. Community Spirit on the 4th of February from 5.30 to 10.30pm promises an exceptional evening of boutique market stalls and interactive performances with the focus on transforming Kibble Park into a vibrant village. What is happening in your garden? What have you grown? And what are you planning for this year?

Seacoast Fishing Buy the freshest seafood on the coast. Come and try our locally caught seafood. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays our boys Peter Mark and Blane, bring in their daily catch for Sue and staff to sell direct to the public. Coming up to our warmer months Nov Dec Jan Feb our lobster season is under way. November the boys put out about 200 traps for lobsters and as the water warms the lobsters start to move out to sea in search of food after being in hibernation over the winter period. Our stocks of live lobsters are kept on our premises in large tanks for the public to choose. We then can cook them or the customers can take a live lobster home. We also catch and sell snapper, sea bream ocean jackets and trevally. NZ salmon, ocean trout, and fresh crystal bay prawns or fresh tigers or kings (what ever is the best this week) we buy in. Peter has been fishing for about 28 years and has plenty of experience, knowing where to place his traps, Mark is our youngest partner and is very knowledgeable also and Blane is our excellent deckey. Please call us anytime for updated catch info on : 43686160 Patanga Street, Kincumber

We’ve now well and truly settled into the new home at Erina Fair, off Penrose Crescent and accessible via Barralong Road and Terrigal Drive. Summer has finally arrived and the hot weather brought out plenty of gardeners- both the experts amongst our customers and those trying their hand at an age old past-time. Summer brings people out, about and socialising! What is your entertainment area like? Did you get it looking spiffy for Christmas, reading for barbeques out in the garden with friends? Colourful pot plants or perhaps a small tree can transform a dull space to one which is cosy and welcoming at any time of the year. What are you excited about in the garden this summer- we would love to hear about or maybe see some photos! Are you picking your herbs and salad every day? Or a small bunch of flowers to fill a vase. For me brushing past the lavender, the waft of a new bloom on the roses or a bowl of stir-fry direct from the garden is exciting. In the nursery we want you to start thinking about the rest of the year! What are you planning for the vegie garden for winter? Have you fed and mulched thoroughly. Get ready for your autumn feed. If you used something organic in spring- a pelletised manure like Organic Life, alternate this with a complete fertiliserlike our Plants Plus All Purpose fertiliser (2.5kg or 5kg). And in the Aquarium- YES WE DO HAVE FISH AND PONDS AND PUMPS! All is looking fantastic! If you were one of the lucky ones who scored a new fish tank for Christmas- is it all up and running? If you need some friendly and free advice on any of your fishy

questions come and see Matt, Craig or Mandy. The new pond- which made its first appearance up at the Flora Festival is now in, lined, filled and the home to our first large Koi since our move from Erina Heights. Come have a gander! So for all your Garden, Pond and Aquarium supplies and advice, the ever ready team at Penrose Garden and Aquarium has got it covered! See you soon.

Segway Located a short 10 min drive from Gosford is Mount Penang Parklands. This parkland oasis is one of the hidden jewels which is often overlooked by locals as well as tourists. In October a brand new unique activity commenced it’s business utilising some of the great qualities of the park. Segway Central Coast allows people from ages 9 to 90 to experience one of the newest and exciting activities ever. Riding a Segway is different from anything you have ever done. The machine is controlled by moving your body weight. The movements are slight and easy. Once you have spent 5 minutes mastering the basic start, stop and turns you are guided out amongst the parklands to really see what this machine can do. Within 10 mins you are promoted from beginner’s mode onto advance mode and things start to speed up. To find out more or to book one of these once in your life rides check out www.segwaycentralcoast.com.au or ring on 0403354568.

BWHS has some wonderful and very interesting books in the Archives Library and one is a Copy of – Historical Records of the Central Coast of New South Wales : Agnes Fagan’s Diary 1985. This is from the series Collected Records of the District of Brisbane Water to 1891. – Published by the Gosford District Local History Study Group. Agnes Baptist married George Fagan on 31 August 1885. George was the seventh son, and only child of Peter and Margaret Fagan, to marry. Agnes Fagan’s Diary 1885 is an account of a trip by Agnes and George to Gosford in 1885. This was Agnes’ first visit to her husband’s birthplace and to the district where he spent his youth. It was also her first opportunity to meet members of his family and circle of friends living at West Gosford. Agnes was a very observant woman who

drew an interesting picture of life in the small village and its environs. Her recollections, apart from their human interest, are historically very valuable. The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

Sea Grill Restaurant Little Creek 220 Del Monte Place, Copacabana. Cheese Factory Phone: 0243823360 "What a wonderful surprise our lunch in this light, airy restaurant opposite the beach front at Copacabana was. We all chose an entree and my friend Klara (Imag owner) suggested we share a seafood platter for 2 for mains. I hate sharing. However, she is a great 'foodie' like me and is very knowing so I acquiesced... How right she was. The menu is a Seafood lovers' dream. The Seafood platter for two was absolutely magnificent with 2 whole crabs cut in half to adorn the platter. There were Sydney rock oysters succulent and tasty, beautiful big prawns, smoked salmon and then a selection of calamari, yabbies in Garlic butter, Tempura Prawns, a wonderful pasta full of seafood and the best 'melt in your mouth' Tempura fish I have had, (the owner tells me the secret is in the making of the tempura and I will attest to that). All served with a wonderful array of Lemon, Fruit, Salad and great chips.... I would have said impossible to top, however that was before we ordered sweets. I have eaten all over the world and will state I have never seen more interesting/ better presented sweets. The list was fascinating before we saw the presentation....WOW! I had the Liquorice All sort Ice Cream with Liquorice Ice Cream Bullets and Lime Coulees. Desserts are the Chef's speciality,(we didn't have to ask) not a crumb was left and our finger-marked plates attested to that. This restaurant is special, memorable, and has it all. (They even do take-away if you are having guests and need to impress and enjoy at the same time). I can't wait to visit again!" Carolyn Sinclair, Chef, Old Courthouse Restaurant, Minmi, 1990-2003

Little Creek Cheese hand make all of their gourmet cheeses right here on the Central Coast at their factory located at the Old Wyong Milk factory along Alison Rd. They also hand make yoghurt, which they sell in natural flavour or with lovely flavoured sauces. The Milk Factory was actually the first commercial dairy to make and sell yoghurt commercially in Australia, so Little Creek Cheese has brought back a touch of history to the area. Exciting news, Little Creek Cheese has just released their latest cheese and it uses their wonderful natural yoghurt. It is based on the Lebanese cheese called Labna. Little Creek Cheese’s Yoghurt Cheese Balls are marinated in canola oil infused with garlic, cracked pepper and lemon myrtle. It has the wonderful tangy taste of natural yoghurt followed by the fresh lemon, garlic and pepper taste. How is it best eaten? Traditionally it is spread on Lebanese bread and eaten on its own or add some lamb make your own kebab style snack. It is available in two sizes, so pop in and try Little Creek Cheese’s latest taste sensation. Don’t forget they are open 7 days a week from 10am to 4pm 141 – 155 Alison Rd , Wyong NSW 4353 CHEESE (4353 2433)

Handmade Craft Market Bring your family to meet our handmade family at our NEW HOME! Due to the huge success of the Handmade Craft Market, we have moved the event to a larger venue. On Sunday, 19th February our first 2012 Handmade Craft Market will be held at Bridgecoast Stadium, Duffys Road, Terrigal. The Handmade Craft Market will continue to raise money for local charities and support the local community. 100% of our gold coin entry donation for the February 2012 market is going to the Walk for Zoe. Brodie Donegan is a much loved stallholder at the Handmade Craft Market. We want to assist Brodie to raise money to get her to London to participate in the London Marathon. Brodie is attempting this to raise money for Miracle Babies, her legacy for Zoe. On Christmas Day 2009, Brodie went for a 10 minute walk and did not come home for 6 months when she was hit by a car driven by a drug affected driver. Brodie sustained significant injuries. The most devastating part of the accident, she lost her daughter Zoe. Brodie was 32 weeks pregnant. Brodie set herself goals so she would

be able to look after her family and she has worked hard to be where she is today, she can jog a little and is continuing to work hard to attempt the London Marathon in April. She is doing it for herself, her family and Zoe. All our gold coin entry donations are going straight to Brodie and we will also be raffling Handmade Hampers at the market to raise further funds. "Brodie is an amazing and inspiring woman, we sincerely hope the Central Coast will get behind her and support her legacy for Zoe. We want to do whatever we can to help her achieve her goal”, said Melissa Garland. The Handmade Craft Market is on Sunday 19th February from 10am – 3pm at Bridgecoast Stadium, Duffys Road, Terrigal. Bring your family, enjoy a day out. We have Little Kickers joining us, so the kids can have a bit of fun playing and learning some soccer skills. There will be shopping for gorgeous handmade designer originals and delicious treats from over 90 designers, artists and cooks. You will find a lot of your favourite stallholders back again and so many new faces too. The first 100 people through the doors will receive a FREE goodie bag full of samples and offers, so get there early so you don’t miss out. What’s in store: • Over 90 stalls • Gorgeous handmade originals and

delicious treats. • Face painting • Little Kickers • 100 Goodie Bags to give away • Handmade Hamper Raffles The market is run quarterly on the 3rd Sunday of February, May, August and November. Don’t miss it Sunday 19th February. Open from 10am – 3pm. Entry: Gold Coin Donation. www.handmadecraftmarket.com.au enquiries@handmadecraftmarket.com.au or call 0411 490 593. World first in photography on the Central Coast Iconic Australian photographer Ken Duncan, renowned for his innovative approach to photography, has done it once again with the launch of his 2011 Exhibition. Over the past 3 years, Ken has been photographing African wildlife on a Phase One digital camera which gives images with such clarity that you feel as if you are right there, seeing the animals in the wild. This high end digital camera has an astounding 80 megapixel sensor. On a recent trip Botswana, Ken was looking for a powerful shot of a male lion. “I found the image I was looking for” he said, “and as the lion looked right into my lens, a chill went down my spine from the intensity of the lion’s stare.” When he previewed the shot back at camp later that day, Ken knew he had a winner. “Other photographers travelling with me had taken similar shots on their high end Nikon and Canon cameras. They thought their shots had detail until they looked into my 80 megapixel image. They were all blown away by the quality.” Phase One cameras are mainly used for fashion shoots, landscapes or other commercial applications, but Ken was able to get a very rare 500mm lens to fit his Phase One camera.

“The difficult thing about these cameras for wildlife photography is that the lens has to be focused manually” Ken explained, “and focus is critical when shooting animals.” The manufacturers of Phase One are so excited by Ken’s use of their camera that they are coming to Australia to see his new exhibition. Ken Duncan’s 2011 exhibition is currently on at his Erina Heights Gallery (414 The Entrance Road), featuring some glorious new Australian landscape images as well as the African wildlife series. An added bonus for anyone who goes to see the new exhibition, is the launch of Ken’s stunning new book Australia - Our Island Paradise. This latest book features many beautiful Australian landscapes shot with the Phase One camera, plus Ken has included technical data on all the images and information on all the camera gear he uses. This book will make a great gift for anyone who loves photography as it provides great insight into how Ken captures his spectacular images. Preparations for Sydney’s greatest outdoor extravaganza this summer, HANDA Opera on Sydney Harbour – La Traviata, to be held from 24 March 2012 for an exclusive threeweek season are well underway with the purpose-built 25-metre stage now under construction in Adelaide. Australia’s most accomplished and daring set Designer Brian Thomson, whose projects include Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Gale Edwards’ La Boheme, Sydney Olympic and Melbourne Commonwealth Games ceremonies and New Year’s Eve events, is busy constructing the set. Thomson’s minimal but striking stage design will be dominated by a giant chandelier measuring 9-metres x 9-metres, that will sparkle with thousands of crystals symbolizing the world of Verdi’s much-loved opera with its glittering Parisian salons. The chandelier will be suspended from a 26-metre crane, blackened out so that it is invisible against the night sky. At the end of La Traviata’s Act I Violetta, after singing the famous aria Sempre Libera, will ascend with the chandelier in a capsule as fireworks explode all around. Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is the Company’s most ambitious project to date, working in conjunction with Destination NSW on behalf of the NSW Government to attract audiences from across the globe to be a part of this uniquely spectacular opera event. Starring in this production are sopranos Emma Matthews and Rachelle Durkin who will jointly share the role of Violetta, and Ji-Min Park and Gianluca Terranova as well as Jonathan Summers and Warwick Fyfe.
