Summer of fun on the Central Coast! The Central Coast has long been a family favourite for a summer holiday – and in January there’s even more reason to make it your destination! With sport, live music and family events right across the month, it’s the perfect place to start the New Year! Our coastline takes centre stage in January, with the RA Girls Surf Show being held at Copacabana and Macmasters Beaches. Over $15,000 of cash and prizes are on offer with this action-packed female surfing contest and weekend of summer fun (plenty of market stalls, beach games, live entertainment and even surf lessons!) sure to attract crowds from near and far. The spectacular Brisbane Water is the backdrop to a number of events throughout the month, leading up to special Australia Day celebrations. Three top-class Central Coast Mariners football matches at Gosford’s Bluetongue Stadium are dotted throughout the month, while Woy Woy hosts the Sanitarium Weetbix Kids Try-athlon on the January 22, centered around the fantastic Peninsula Leisure Centre. The jewel in the crown is Gosford City’s three-

venue Australia Day events, with Wagstaffe, Gosford and Woy Woy all hot-spots for family fun and Australia Day activities and ceremonies. Not to be outdone, the northern end of the Coast will host bumper Australia Day events as well! On January 25, Australia Day Eve activities at Canton Beach are a huge hit, with live entertainment, farm animals, whip cracking, gold panning, bush rangers, lamington making, Aussie trivia and a whole heap more – all capped off with a colourful fireworks display! The celebrations move to The Entrance on January 26 with a full day’s program of entertainment, market stalls, fun rides, then more fireworks to round out the night! With a bumper coast-wide school holiday event program including

Dip, Dip, Dip Days on the first three Tuesdays of the month at Mt Penang Gardens, and plenty of live acts for those who love their music, the perfect way to relax before the kids head back to school is at Newcastle Permanent’s Cinema Under the Stars. Discover rainforest right on your doorstep at Katandra Reserve! Widely known as a bird watcher’s paradise, Katandra Reserve is said to mean “song of birds”, and is one of the most fascinating natural bushland locations in the Gosford area. Take the opportunity to take a deep breath, slow down and feel the peace of the rainforest. The Waterman Walk is a leisurely 700m track that loops around the tranquil Seymour Pond, providing easy access to the wonders of the rainforest. At Seymour Pond there is a viewing platform along the water’s edge where you can watch birds coming in for a drink while you relax and eat your lunch. As you continue winding around the pond you will be taken into a breathtaking rainforest gully. This rainforest is listed as an Endangered Ecological Community, and at Katandra Reserve you can experience the rainforest that once dominated the local valleys. You will encounter a spectacular array of towering trees, moss-covered rocks, ferns, strangler figs, palms and orchids, and if you’re lucky you might even see animals in their natural habitat.

Coast Helicopters

On a hot day the cool, damp smell of the rainforest is a world away from the surrounding dry ridgelines and urban areas. The Seymour Pond rainforest is accessible from Katandra Road, Holgate and is open from 7am - 6pm. Katandra Reserve is part of the Coastal Open Space System (COSS) and is set aside for the preservation of native flora and fauna, so please leave your pets at home. Seacoast Fishing Buy the freshest seafood on the coast. come and try our locally caught seafood. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays our boys Peter Mark and Blane, bring in their daily catch for Sue and staff to sell direct to the public. Coming up to our warmer months Nov Dec Jan Feb our lobster season is under way. November the boys put out about 200 traps for lobsters and as the water warms the lobsters start to move out to sea in search of food after being in hibernation over the winter period. Our stocks of live lobsters are kept on our premises in large tanks for the public to choose. We then can cook them or the customers can take a live lobster home. We also catch and sell snapper, sea bream ocean jackets and trevally. NZ salmon, ocean trout, and fresh crystal bay prawns or fresh tigers or kings (what ever is the best this week) we buy in. Peter has been fishing for about 28 years and has plenty of experience, knowing where to place his traps, Mark is our youngest partner and is very knowledgeable also and Blane is our excellent deckey. To honour motorsport legend Peter Brock a very unique rose was released in time for the V8 Supercars at Bathurst, NSW. September 2011 marked the fifth anniversary of Peter’s tragic death and the Peter Brock Foundation Rose is a growing symbol that honours the legacy of “Brocky” and continues his passion for helping others. When Peter retired from full time racing in 1997 his driving passion and energy took a turn away from the track to establish the Peter Brock Foundation. His kindness, drive and selfless devotion in giving back to society made a real difference to many Australians who needed a helping hand. Danees Denman, Director of the Peter Brock Foundation said “We are delighted and extremely honoured to be associated with this magnificent blooming rose, a truly perfect rose. The Peter Brock Foundation Rose acknowledges Peter Brock’s integrity and tireless dedication to provide a better quality of life for those less fortunate. Peter Brock was a wonderful individual who captured the heart of all those he meet. The Foundation hopes this rose will capture your heart. The Peter Brock Foundation is very grateful for Knight’s Roses inspiring passion and unyielding support to make a difference”. For two years Knight’s Roses have been propagating this magnificent rose. “This has been one of the most exciting projects we’ve ever undertaken. Out of the hundreds of rose varieties that we have grown this is by far the most outstanding red rose I have ever seen. When I think of Peter Brock, I like most Australians immediately remember the famous number 05 and the unmistakable bright red Holden race cars. This stunning red rose is big on impact just like the late great Peter Brock” said Knight’s Roses Director Daniel Knight. Peter’s brother Lewis Brock is very proud to represent the Brock family

in the release of the Peter Brock Rose. “Peter came from humble beginnings in Hurstbridge, outside Melbourne, to dominate race tracks around Australia and the world. He was a living example of the power of dreams and a great spokesperson for the underprivileged and downtrodden. His dream lives on in this rose”. To continue the legacy of Peter Brock, Knight’s Roses will proudly donate a percentage of the purchase price of the Peter Brock Foundation Rose to Variety, the children’s charity. Jack Cannons AM, National Chairman of Variety said “Variety, the children’s charity is proud to be associated with the Peter Brock Foundation Rose. Peter will be remembered as a generous man who did so much for charity. His legacy will continue through the sale of this beautiful rose and we are very grateful that a percentage of the proceeds will go towards supporting special needs children across Australia”. Knight’s Roses are one of Australia’s largest wholesale Rose suppliers, producing around 500,000 roses to nurseries in every Australian state. “As a young kid growing up in Gawler, I always admired Peter Brock. To have the privilege of actually naming a rose in Peter’s honour is an amazing opportunity. I’m also very proud to be taking the rose from Gawler to Bathurst for all to see” said Daniel Knight. Available on the Central Coast from Penrose Garden and Aquarium.

Alison Homestead Destroyed During the morning of Saturday December 3rd 2011, the unimaginable occurred. In a most horrendous act, an inhumane arsonist set fire to the oldest relic in the Wyong Shire. The stunningly beautiful Alison Homestead was all but destroyed. This wonderful historical building, the library and all the donated pieces of history inside were lost to the Community forever. The devastating sight leaves tears of sorrow and feelings of anger. How could anyone do this? Not only ours, but future generations have been robbed. For what purpose?

Alison Homestead Before

Wyong District Museum & Historical Society Inc.

The homestead was over 130 years old. Wyong Council purchased the property in 1988 and began restoration projects. The Wyong Historical Society and Museum have been a part of Alison Homestead since 1992. With 54 members currently, one of who was actually born on the property. Eight out of the 10 rooms were destroyed in the fire. The perpetrator was low enough to start a fire in the ancient fire truck stored in the shed. I could not count how many people have been effected by this lowest of acts. We only hope the arsonist is caught by the police and the appropriate punishment is administered.

World first in photography on the Central Coast Iconic Australian photographer Ken Duncan, renowned for his innovative approach to photography, has done it once again with the launch of his 2011 Exhibition. Over the past 3 years, Ken has been photographing African wildlife on a Phase One digital camera which gives images with such clarity that you feel as if you are right there, seeing the animals in the wild. This high end digital camera has an astounding 80 megapixel sensor. On a recent trip Botswana, Ken was looking for a powerful shot of a male lion. “I found the image I was looking for” he said, “and as the lion looked right into my lens, a chill went down my spine from the intensity of the lion’s stare.” When he previewed the shot back at camp later that day, Ken knew he had a winner. “Other photographers travelling with me had taken similar shots on their high end Nikon and Canon cameras. They thought their shots had detail until they looked into my 80 megapixel image. They were all blown away by the quality.” Phase One cameras are mainly used for fashion shoots, landscapes or other commercial applications, but Ken was able to get a very rare 500mm lens to fit his Phase One camera.

18

www.monthlyimag.com.au

“The difficult thing about these cameras for wildlife photography is that the lens has to be focused manually” Ken explained, “and focus is critical when shooting animals.” The manufacturers of Phase One are so excited by Ken’s use of their camera that they are coming to Australia to see his new exhibition. Ken Duncan’s 2011 exhibition is currently on at his Erina Heights Gallery (414 The Entrance Road), featuring some glorious new Australian landscape images as well as the African wildlife series. An added bonus for anyone who goes to see the new exhibition, is the launch of Ken’s stunning new book Australia - Our Island Paradise. This latest book features many beautiful Australian landscapes shot with the Phase One camera, plus Ken has included technical data on all the images and information on all the camera gear he uses. This book will make a great gift for anyone who loves photography as it provides great insight into how Ken captures his spectacular images. The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

Camp Rock The Musical

The Wind In The Willows

Disney's popular movies, Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2 blend together to form CAMP ROCK: the Musical. Mitchie Torres is back at Camp Rock for another summer of fun with her friends and love interest Shane Gray, of Connect 3 fame. Shane and his brothers have come to help their Uncle Brown run the summer music camp. Unfortunately this year, Brown's ex-band member, Axel Turner, has opened his own glitzy music camp right across the lake, effectively stealing Camp Rock counsellors and campers alike. Mitchie, Caitlyn and Connect 3 now find themselves makeshift counsellors in a struggle for the life of Camp Rock. Complicating matters is the fact that Nate Gray and Axel's daughter, Dana, seem attracted to one another from the start. The show culminates in a 'Sing-off' televised for the viewing audience to vote for the best camp. Who will win the contest? And who will survive to see another year of making music and fun in the summer sun? Come and find out for yourself this summer. All tickets $20 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 January at 10.30am. 19, 20, 21 January at 7.30pm

Sydney’s favourite family entertainment The Wind in the Willows continues its well-loved summer tradition when the infamous Toad of Toad Hall and his friends Ratty, Badger, Mole, Weasel and Otter return to The Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney playing from 6 to 28 January 2012. Kenneth Grahame’s immortal story of life on the riverbank is brought to life in this delightful promenade production that has become a traditional summer favourite providing enchanting and lively family entertainment. There’s lots of audience participation for the young ‘wabbits’ who are encouraged to get involved in the action, and are given every opportunity to scream out loud, sing along and become part of the adventure. The costumes are wonderful and there is fun for young and old as the Head Chief Rabbit transforms the audience into ‘wabbits’ – with a waggle of the ears, a wiggle of the nose and a promise not to dwop any wabbit wubbish as they move through the gardens. Over the years tens of thousands have delighted in the simple pleasures of this rollicking production… so this summer pack a picnic, pack the kids... and head on down to the riverbank. 6 to 28 January 2012 (no performance on 26 January) 11am and 6pm from Tuesday to Saturday The Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney Enter any gate and make your way to the Harbour side of the Main Pond PRICES: Single Tickets $25, Family of Four $90, handling fee may apply Bookings: 1300 122 344 www.shakespeareaustralia.com.au or Ticketek 1300 795 012 www.ticketek.com.au

John Waters returns in his critically acclaimed production Looking Through A Glass Onion - a homage to the music, mystery and memory of John Lennon. Glass Onion was created by Waters and D'Arrietta back in January 1992 with a 5 week run in a small cabaret room at the Tilbury Hotel in Sydney's Woolloomooloo as a two man show and was an instant success. Since then, included more musicians it has toured London's West End and a further 2 Sold Out Australian tours. The show is not a cut-and-paste biography of Lennon or an emulation of the original recordings. On stage, with shadows from the lighting arrangement fluttering over his face as he explores the essence of the man through song and spoken word, Waters becomes synonymous with Lennon. He shies away from imitating the artist, but so emotive is his performance, it lulls the audience into believing anything is possible. It's part concert and part biography though it doesn't seek to tell the full story of Lennon's life. For the audience this is either an emotional trip down memory lane or a wonderful introduction to the life and times of one of the most fascinating icons of our time. With 31 songs performed including to name a few, A Day in The Life, Strawberry Fields Forever, Revolution, Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds, Working Class Hero, Imagine and more, this is a show for all ages. The music is delivered superbly by The Glass Onion Band that is lead by Stewart D'Arrietta. Adult $55, Conc. $50, Groups 8+ $50 27 January, 8pm
