From the Editor The Gosford Classic Car Museum opens its doors in May. I was lucky enough to have a look through and there is nothing else like it anywhere. This is the most magnificent experience any car lover can have. The page header has one of my favourites; I can see me in this! We have 3 new restaurants for you to visit. As you now know unless I have been there I won’t invite them to come into iMag. I love all the restaurants we feature and visit them regularly. Introducing in FOOD WORTH TRAVELING FOR, the Coast Bar and Restaurant p51, Splash Bar and Restaurant p52 and Black Sesame Asian Cuisine p53. Do try them and you will enjoy it as much as we have. All the restaurants in iMag have something wonderful planned for Mother’s Day. I will be compering the Debrah Buckley fashion parade at her shop on Saturday 7th May at 2pm. The models and I love doing this as the clothes are fantastic and so very affordable. Come and join us for a glass of wine, some nibbles and enjoy the shopping.

If it is Art you love there is so much happening at our galleries, I am now the proud owner of another Ken Duncan masterpiece, a beautiful magnificent Polar Bear! If you still haven’t been to the Gallery at Erina Heights...why not? As you see by our cover, Sculpture on the Greens is on again in the beautiful grounds of Kooindah Waters see p21. Do try Karinyas Restaurant – we so enjoyed our dinner. See p19 for our review. Our lovely cover “It's not over till Martha sings” was created by our wonderful Emilia Krumm (Risi) Not only did she win an Award she sold Martha as well. We are very proud of this wonderfully talented friend. Congratulations to Col Henry and his team for yet another fabulous exhibition. Whale Watching season begins in June and ecoaward winning Imagine Cruises (p61) has the perfect sightseeing cruise for you. I will finish by wishing all the Mums a happy Mother’s Day.

Headland Exhibition Artist Robyn Pedley ventures into semiabstract landscapes with her new exhibition Headland.

Known for her exquisite land and water-scapes, this new series is based on the region’s rugged monumental icons dotted along our coastal waters. With more than 20 new paintings, these works are marked by simplification, repetition and striking colour. Believed to be some of Robyn Pedley’s best work to-date, Headland offers relief from the mundane and delivers an intriguing series that has a sense

of the familiar and yet could be anywhere. Bobbie P Gallery is proud to present this exciting new exhibition Headland opening May 19, at 6pm and showing until June 9, 2016 at 11 Alison Road, Wyong. For more information or to RSVP for the opening event - contact Bobbie P Gallery on 0490 061 949 or visit the gallery at 11 Alison Road, Wyong.

How special is your Mum...

our daily lives. A massage is a great treatment to have for relaxation, and to unwind and focus just on yourself in a relaxed serene atmosphere with essential oil and soft music.

We all need time for ourselves to maintain our bodies, our minds and our well being. We all have busy lives and important roles to ourselves and other's we care for. A mum's life is full of multi tasking for everyone in her life as a caregiver and a nurturer. A mum needs energy for herself so she can give her all to the special people in her life whether its for her partner, children, friends and her career. There are some very important reasons your mum needs a massage: ITS 'ME' TIME... Its important when we are pulled in many different directions and focusing of everyone else to spend ME TIME to focus and to de-stress

RELIEVE STRESS... A massage is proven to maintain or eliminate stress which causes muscle tension around the shoulders, arms, the neck and also cause headaches and migraines. A regular massage will boost body circulation and allow your body to rid of toxins and harmful substances and cleanse itself naturally. A lack of sleep or a broken sleep will have you waking up feeling fatigued at the start of the day hence no energy to face all that we need to do. Feeling lethargic will put you in a down mood and stress and depression can also occur. Muscle release will energize the body and relieve tension. A better mood and feeling good will improve your well being, patience and happiness. Give your mum a special pamper

gift this mother's day and show her the love and care you have for her. FOOT SPA & FACE, NECK MASSAGE Soak sore tired feet with a foot spa, exfoliation and massage followed by a relieving neck and face massage to de-stress, relieve headaches and improve sleep. A great gift 60mins $60.00. Add a one hour relaxation massage with a foot spa for $85.00 or 90mins for $100.00. ULTIMATE INDULGENCE PACKAGE A foot spa, exfoliation and massage will be followed by a relaxing hot stone massage with essential oils, a serene atmosphere to lift all stresses of life for the body and mind. The ultimate gift for your well deserving mum with 2hours of bliss $140.00. Kooindah Waters

Karinyas Restaurant Our group of three were eager to try Karinyas restaurant at Mercure’s Kooindah Waters. The establishment has undergone a wonderful transformation at the hands of general manager Stephan Leroy. Once Klara, Pam and I read the selections on the Karinyas menu, we could not wait to experience the plethora of tastes created by head chef Keiron Brabender. Murphy Grimes took great care of us on the night and recommended a variety of Robert Oatley wines to match our choices of entrees and main dishes. The service was outstanding and we were comfortable in her capable hands. The entree platter contained a selection of seared Japanese scallops, pork and pistachio terrine, crispy skin Barker Creek pork belly, and roaring forties King Island blue cheese that we shared, but we also chose the Vietnamese crunchy salad of shredded vegetables, spiced wantons and candied chillies and the wonderfully fresh and subtly flavoured SA Coffin Bay oysters. They all met our expectations. (We wallowed in the flavour of the creamy blue cheese and the wonderfully cooked pork belly!) The 2014 Robert Oatley Riesling and 2014 Chardonnay married well with these fantastic selections. There are set menus with good choices of starters and main courses for affordable prices which are recommended. People with dietary needs are also well catered for. We wanted to try a variety of main courses which consisted of a beautifully pink Veal cutlet with Cafe de Paris butter and grilled asparagus, slow roasted pork neck marinated in honey and white Miso paste on stir fried bok choy, and

Food worth travelling for! crispy skinned duck breast, cauliflower puree, pan fried asparagus and sour cranberry jus, all cooked to perfection and with flair. The flavours were delicious and were enhanced by the Robert Oatley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 and the Shiraz 2014. Keiron Brabender suggested that we definitely keep room for dessert, and we could not agree with him more! Pam Duncan chose the white Belgian Callebaut chocolate orange tart with fresh raspberries and she was transported to a heavenly place. We also tried the Eton mess with meringue, berry compote and vanilla crème fraiche. Klara loved the crème caramel with fresh raspberries and almond tuille, and my personal favourite was the apple hazelnut frangipani puff pastry galette with caramel macadamia ice cream which was truly delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Karinyas Restaurant and can highly recommend it as a great place for a sensational taste experience! Emilia Krumm www.centralcoastimag.com.au

"Mother Lotus" by Rhonda Castle & Nardja Williams

SCULPTURE ON THE GREENS 2016 This year’s exhibition is on show from 9 April to the 22 May 2016, at Kooindah Waters Golf and Spa Resort in Wyong, during daylight hours. Admission is free, and the exhibition showcases 70 outside sculptures and over 15 inside works. This is a great way to spend several hours with refreshment, lunches, and drinks available at the venue. The passion and commitment of the committee members to produce a high quality ‘cultural event’ for the Central Coast is empowered by their credo to include Community in many ways. With this as their main criteria, included in the exhibition are works by 150 students from six local High Schools and drawings by 120 students from local Primary Schools, sponsored by Delta Electricity and known as ‘Students on the Greens’. High school students have been mentored and guided over 2 months, creating meaningful and contemporary works which will delight the audience. The Primary Schools were encouraged to explore the concept of ‘Drawing in 3D’, and created delightful graphite works which are on show in the foyers of both Wyong Council Chambers and Kooindah Waters, both being ‘Proud Sponsors’ of the event. Also included are works created during a

mentorship program funded by Wallarah 2, allowing 4 local emerging sculptors to design and create, over 4 months, works to exhibit in the exhibition, developing their skills and understanding with the goal to become a professional artist. Their artistic journey was creative and challenging with mentor Col Henry, insisting on ‘conceptual development’, as well as ‘skills based’ outcomes. Their journeys have been exceptional, with insight into the world they are preparing to challenge. ‘Be there or be Square’, and enjoy your creative awareness, while questioning the fantastic Sculptural Exhibition. Discover Wyong Shire The nostalgic view of visiting the Central Coast can naturally evoke memories of scorching sand under feet and the taste of salt water as you dive into a deep blue ocean on a hot summer day from a family holiday long over. For others the memories conjured can be the smell of Eucalyptus filling their nose while the all-encompassing song of cicadas rings in their ears on a childhood bushwalking adventure, where Banksia Men were battled and fresh, white bread vegemite sandwiches were consumed. But when you think of the Central Coast do you think of art, innovation, culture or creativity? If the answer is no, you need to take another look. When you do you will find weekend markets teaming with artisans from a huge array of disciplines from painting and woodwork to music and dance. You will discover galleries and cafes where local artists sell their wares and public murals which are dedicated to celebrating their many talents. The Yarramalong Valley has a rich artistic heritage that continues to be celebrated today through regular exhibitions and performances at establishments such as the Yarramalong Old School. The group of cafes, shops and establishments at Long Jetty are the ground zero for an up and coming hub where intergenerational creatives are collaborating, pushing boundaries and inspiring change.

From Foresters Beach to Toukley venues that provide up and coming local musicians a forum to be heard and place to develop are open for business. It is the imagination of these skilled and passionate individuals that is fuelling the creative ethos of our entire community. The Central Coast, while certainly still capable of leaving future generations with memories of salt, sand and sun is now also a destination that will inspire them to create and to celebrate originality. Exposure Photo Exhibition Exposure is a local photographic competition held annually which emboldens Central Coast photographers to use their local landscape and the stories and personalities of the local residents to inspire their work and creative process. The competition will culminate in 2016 with a public exhibition of a broad range of photographic works at The Entrance Gallery between 11 June and 26 June. The photographs on display will be the best of the best from hundreds of Exposure entries. Photos exhibited in previous years, such as Daniel Colerio’s Gorokan jetty sunrise (inset), are examples of what can be expected again in 2016, a celebration of talented locals using inspiring local settings to create splendid works of art. Whether you’re passionate about the arts or simply adore the landscape that we are lucky enough to call home the Exposure Exhibition is one not to be missed by any. The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

What to See & Do The Pelican Feeding in The Entrance Memorial Park is a highlight of any visit. Daily at 3.30pm The Entrance Heritage Walk is one of the best on the Central Coast and visitors will also enjoy the Coast to Lake Walk. The Peninsula Ettalong Beach, Umina Beach & Woy Woy Alan Strom Lookout Š Brendon Weston

The Peninsula a truly special place For those who live on the Peninsula, we all appreciate how truly special the area is with its safe and beautiful beaches, picturesque waterways, accessible National Parks, vibrant town centres, good transport and easy access to Sydney. Woy Woy is one of the busiest rail stations in New South Wales as locals commute to Sydney for work each morning and return each night to the relaxed Peninsula lifestyle. It is no wonder that more people choose to live and visit the Peninsula as they discover its wonderful attributes. Few places can boast one of the best ferry rides in Australia from Ettalong Beach to Palm Beach via the Palm Beach Ferry or the spectacular train ride from Woy Woy to Sydney via the Hawkesbury River. Nor can you ignore the wonderful Ettalong Beach Foreshore, the Woy Woy Waterfront or the many spectacular lookouts and National Parks. Without doubt our beaches are the cleanest and

28

safest on the Central Coast boasting Ettalong Beach, Umina and Ocean Beach, Pearl Beach and Patonga. Importantly, our town centres have become more vibrant with the bustling Umina Beach one of the busiest retail strip shopping centres on the Central Coast. This is supported by major shopping facilities in Woy Woy including Deepwater Plaza and Peninsula Plaza and boutique shopping in Ettalong Beach. In recent years we have seen the emergence of a great cafĂŠ culture and a range of high quality restaurants especially in the Ettalong Beach village centre. With great schools, terrific services and a full range of shopping centres, the demographics of the Peninsula are changing with young families and professionals moving in to complement our older population. No longer just somewhere to retire (and why not), the Peninsula has become a place for younger people to raise families and enjoy a lifestyle that is the envy of Sydney. Come visit the Peninsula and discover the reasons why others have chosen to make this area their home and a holiday destination.

Linda Aronson’s Dinkum During the winter of 1942, with the world at war and the nation facing invasion from the Japanese, in the remote North Queensland town of Warrabadanga the twelve female workers at the Dinkum Biscuit Factory are battling to keep the biscuits baking. For these ordinary Aussie women in a town devoid of men, life is challenging. Not only are they fighting to save the factory from being sold for scrap, they’re running a ‘Mum’s Army’ Civil Defence Unit, putting on a show for the ‘War Effort’ – and coping with the sudden arrival of two thousand American airmen who’ve been stationed just outside town.

My name is Asher Lev

Directed by Moira Blumenthal and starring Annie Byron, Tim McGarry and John O’Hare. Premiering in Sydney after an award-winning Off-Broadway season is the classic coming-ofage story, MY NAME IS ASHER LEV by Aaron Posner based on the novel by Chaim Potok. MY NAME IS ASHER LEV won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play and the prestigious John Gassner Award. Under the direction of Moira Blumenthal, the Sydney premiere will star ANNIE BYRON, TIM McGARRY and JOHN O’HARE. Asher Lev is a young Hasidic Jew growing up in Brooklyn in the late 1940s. His considerable artistic talent draws opposition from not only his own strict sect, which believes art is a waste of time, but also

from his parents. Asher is willing to challenge the expectations of his community and the unhappiness of his family but will have to pay a terrible price for the right to use his gift. “One of the best plays of the year!” Huffington Post “You should see it, your children should see it, everyone should see it!” New York Magazine “Compellingly personal yet universal.” Associated Press Venue: Eternity Playhouse, 39 Burton Street, Darlinghurst Season: Sunday 8 – Sunday 29 May 2016 Evenings: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday 7.30pm Matinees: Wednesday and Thursday at 11.00am; Sunday at 2.00pm. Pioneers in Petticoats Tales of four real pioneers by WENDY BLAXLAND Pioneers in Petticoats bring to life the stories of four extraordinary and barely known colonial Australian women. This season will take place across a variety of historical venues from 30 April to 28 May performing in Penrith, Bathurst, Eastwood and Woollahra. Award-winning writer Wendy Blaxland and director Jessica Blaxland Ashby are direct descendants of Gregory Blaxland. In Pioneers in Petticoats you will meet four charismatic women from colonial Australia. In 1791 convict Mary Bryant escaped the colony in an open boat to Batavia (Timor), eventually losing her small children, husband and her own hard-won liberty. History written into the Calga landscape Calga is so much more than an interchange. This tiny community is situated on an ancient “super highway” that Aboriginal people have been travelling for tens of thousands of years. It was also the route for cattle drovers in the more recent past. The Calga valley forms a natural amphitheatre rich in fascinating historical sites, both Aboriginal and post settlement. The Aboriginal sites in the valley together form a heritage landscape so unique and important that the Land and Environment Court ruled, in December, that it must be preserved. Walkabout Park is at the heart of Calga, and protects a number of the sites that form part of this landscape. Through May and June, Walkabout Park will be taking small groups (minimum age 16) walkabout to better understand why this place is so important for

all Australians. Email heritage@walkaboutpark.com.au to let them know if you are interested in joining one of these fascinating walks. Go to www.walkaboutpark.com.au for details about the different ways you can enjoy the animals and bush at Walkabout Park.

The Italian Restaurant Review

We had had a scary start to the day, driving in the pouring rain and blowing a tyre right off the Volvo halfway to the Central Coast. We have been to the Italian restaurant many times but thought a rainy day and the new menu were perfect matches. One hitch - Klara has become Gluten intolerant however the staff were so helpful, and sorted out every item. The menu is clearly marked with (GF) to make it easy. We shared most items so we could comment. Entrees: We had a new dish Seafood Share (for 2), a selection of chilli lime Scampi; Prosciutto-wrapped Scallops; Lobster Ricotta Chorizo mousse stuffed cucumber; creamcheese filled roasted capsicum wrapped in smoked salmon. Beautifully presented with such lovely tastes this platter was a delight. We accompanied this with the freshest oysters natural we have ever had. Mains: I had the Meat and Seafood Grill, Angus Sirloin, Med-Rare topped with prawns mussel, calamari, fish, scallop and bug with Citrus Chilli Aoli.

Foodth wor ling l traveor! f

Ian had Grilled Scampi (GF) with Garlic Parsley marinade served on Salad (he is a lighter eater) and Klara the Chicken Ripieni breast filled with sundried tomato, chorizo and ricotta wrapped in prosciutto with mushroom, bacon Marsala sauce. The mains were perfectly done with tasty potato gallettes and broccolini. Choice of Salad or vegetables is readily available if you want to change accompaniments.

Sweets; a delightful cheesecake, Creme Brulee, and wild strawberry & Balsamic Mouse with chocolate sauce. There is a choice of 13 sweets and it is hard to choose, ours were fantastic. After such a scary start our favourite Italian restaurant and its staff ensured the day improved out of sight. The new items on the menu were superb, the chef blew us away and we felt 150% better than we had. I thoroughly recommend this restaurant. They provide for every taste and pocket. Restaurant Review

Looking for great Chinese food on the Coast? I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon recently at the Black Sesame Restaurant in East Gosford with the Imag Team. I hadn’t set foot inside this restaurant for probably 25 years when I remember lots of red everywhere, so was pleasantly surprised that new owners May, Zeng-Yuan, Chris and Timothy had updated everything and the new decor was very impressive. The menu was quite extensive and we tried the following: Appetizers Salt & Pepper Eggplant (this was AMAZING!!!!) Lemongrass Chicken Mid-Wings

Sang Choy Bow (by far the best I’ve ever had. You could tell the ingredients used were extremely fresh. Mains Peking Beef Teriyaki Chicken (Delicious!) Singapore Prawns in a tomato base (not a fan of tomato but these were great) Fried Rice (Light not too heavy) Basil Chilli Jam Chicken (Very tender & tasty. Chilli was not overpowering) There are GF dishes available. In summing up, a delicious and enjoyable meal was had by all. No room for dessert but I look forward to exploring those

www.monthlyimag.com.au

The annual extravaganza held in the small town of Aberdeen in the Upper Hunter, renowned for its strong Scottish heritage, is being held on Saturday, July 2 at Jefferson Park, Aberdeen. Now in the 17th year, the highland games is an event for the whole family. It features the massed pipes and drums, individual pipe band displays, Tartan Warrior’s with their feats of strength, Scottish highland and country dancing and many stalls. Being Aberdeen’s signature event, the highland games involves the whole community and in the past has been well patronised by families from all over the Hunter Valley and beyond. Visitors, guests, pipe bands and others will be coming from as far as Lithgow, Moree, Dubbo, Tamworth, Armidale and the Sydney metropolitan area as well as interstate to take part in the grand combination of history, pageantry and novelty. A grand parade within the grounds will kick the programme off at 9.00am. Honoured Guest for this year’s event will be Lachie Macdonald, High Commissioner for Clan Donald in Australia. Aberdeen Highland Games president Charles Cooke said, “We are indebted to the mining industry, the thoroughbred industry and many others within the Upper Hunter region for their ongoing support. Surplus funds, have each year been put back into the local communities which has amounted to a figure in excess of $80,000 since 2000.” The games will be followed by a Ceilidh, a Celtic social gathering with a fine meal, music, stories and dancing at St Joseph's high School MPC on Saturday night from 6.30pm. For more information visit the website at www.aberdeenhighlandgames.com or Facebook. Tickets may be purchased on line via TryBooking. com.au or through the Scone Visitor Information Centre.
