Bob’s Timber and Stuff Bob’s Timber and Stuff has been doing the rounds of local Hunter markets for a number of years with their partner in crime, Lady Land Studios. This father and daughter combo shares a double site at Handmade in the Hunter markets. Using locally sourced timbers, Bob shares his passion and knowledge of all things timber, especially the art of wood turning. Bob’s extensive range of handcrafted items includes timber and acrylic turned pens, potpourri bowls, earrings trees and kitchen accessories in the form of large sturdy chopping boards, coffee mug trees, paper towel holders, serviette holders, cheese boards and cheese knives and his very popular tea light candle logs. These are great for inside and outside use. Another arm to Bob’s work is his range of handmade olive oil based soaps. These are great for all skin types but especially gentle for those with sensitive skin. In a variety of scents and designs, these are all available at his stall, just off the verandah of the tasting room at Kevin Sobels Winery. Stop by for chat, smell the soaps, admire the timbers and enjoy the range of handcrafted items. Bob is happy to discuss product ideas and orders. February Hello and welcome to the February issue of the Hunter iMag, your FREE monthly guide to what’s on around the Hunter region and surrounding areas. Once again, there is a whole host of events taking place in our region and whether you are a music fan, a foodie or just want something fun to do with your family; there is something for everyone. If you’re looking for a little TLC after the frantic times during the holidays, then visit the Bodhi Healing Festival in Newcastle (see page 34) and indulge in a little well-earned “me” time. Go on, you deserve it! For family fun in the February sun then check out page 12 for the venues and dates of pool parties at the council pools in and around Newcastle.
On page 21 you’ll find information on the Country Music Shindig at Lostcok Dam Caravan Park on 25th February – with lots of great acts, hot food and a family atmosphere it promises to be a fabulous event so don’t miss it! For events with an agricultural theme then look no further than the Cessnock Campdraft on February 24th or be tempted by the intrigue at Tales of Tocal at the homestead in Paterson. Based on a true mystery at the farm the audience will be asked to step back in time to 1874 on a night of gruesome discovery… Whatever you decide to do, have a fun packed month and enjoy this beautiful region with its amazing places to visit and warm and friendly welcome wherever you go.
February is a month steeped in romance so if you are thinking about that all important proposal or you want to plan your big day then the Hunter Valley Gardens wedding show is a must. See page xx for details.

enjoy the cellar door music and browse for interesting wines and other unique gifts. They want you to take the time to talk with the friendly Adina team, who can assist you to appreciate each wine and make the right choices. The cellar door is open 7 days 10am - 5 pm. Adina Vineyard is located at 492 Lovedale Road, Lovedale. Look for them on the right at the top of the hill after you cross over the bridge at Deadman's Creek, about 4 kilometres from the start of Lovedale Road near Cessnock airport and the Visitor's Information Centre. The Vineyard The cellar door is new, but the vineyard is not. Vines have been grown on this property since the 1860's, and the modern vineyard was mostly planted in the 1980's, so the vines are nicely matured. Over the years there have been many memorable wines produced from grapes grown on the property. The varieties grown include the Hunter classics - semillon, chardonnay and shiraz. They also feature different cabernet varieties - both cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc and they have become very well known
for their Italian varieties of pinot grigio and sangiovese. Most times all of these varieties and more are available for tasting and sales at the cellar door. You can also buy your favourite Adina wines on-line. They will ship to your home or office at any postal address in Australia. Orders placed by noon on any business day will be dispatched on the same day. For more details, see the website www.adinavineyard.com.au

My focus with Chardonnay is to generate a powerful style with long concentrated flavours, while retaining vibrant freshness and a good potential for cellaring. Fully ripe fruit is sourced from old and low yielding vines, expressing concentrated citrus, pear, and pineapple characters, with elements of minerally complexity. Sophisticated barrel-fermentation in new French oak (Seguin Moreau and Dargaud & Jeagle) adds fine vanilla richness and spice to the bouquet and flavour. The Chardonnay receives minimal malo-ferment. The texture
and flavour complexity is derived from solids-in-ferment, producing a fruit richness that persists well on to the finish. The result is a tight, bright, focussed wine: a concentrated nucleus of ripe fruit power, balanced with fine oak, and finishing with a clean racy acid. Cellaring will allow the creamy softness to build and subtle cashew-nut characters to develop. This is a fabulous wine – rich, smooth and delicious. m We loved it! Share it with m e a ti nd friends or keep it all to yourself. From just $24 a bottle – it is reasonably priced too. Purchase from cellar door at Hermitage Road or online at www.keithtullochwine.com.au

Fun, family Pool Parties
Waterchild - new Australian Drama at NTC
The City of Newcastle and L!vesites combine to present the Pool Parties event at each of the Council owned swimming centres during February and March. Entertainment will be provided by Ship of Fools, Scallywagz, Phantasia, The Punchinello Puppet Show on stage while Liam and Damo will provide roving entertainment. The program is aimed to provide continuous family entertainment in a safe and fun environment. Come along between 10am and 3pm. Being held on 4th Feb at Stockton, 11th Feb at Wallsend, 18th Feb at Beresfield, 25th February at Mayfield and 10th March Lambton.
Water Child, a new Australian play by CONDA* and Guild Award** winning actress Emma Wood, explores these controversial questions and more. A drama with comic touches, the play examines issues surrounding one couple’s desire to start a family later in life, including miscarriage, relationship and wider family tensions. These questions will resonate with modern audiences, but are not often tackled on stage. Reactions to play readings to date have been complex and emotional, arousing in readers and listeners strong passions in response to the characters and their actions throughout the play. Professional Director Aarne Neeme, who will be involved with the production, describes it as ‘a fine piece of intense writing about fundamental issues!’ With a cast of some of Newcastle’s finest actors including: Rosemary Dartnell, Derek Fisher, Angela McKeown, Lynda Rennie and Nola Wallace and experienced director Richard Murray at the helm, the production promises to be challenging, controversial and passionate. Water Child will premiere at Newcastle Theatre Company from 3-17 March 2012 as part of the 2012 season. Performances will be staged Wed, Fri and Saturdays at 8pm, with matinees on Sun 4th and Saturday 10th at 2pm. Bookings on 4952 4958.

With its unique mix of bush, beach and lake environments, Lake Macquarie is fast becoming a summer haven for families looking to avoid the crowds of busier North Coast holiday destinations. A stay at Lake Macquarie, or ‘Lake Mac’ as the locals know it, offers visitors the chance to experience the relaxed coastal lifestyle that so many Australians dream of. Time spent at Lake Macquarie is reminiscent of good old-fashioned seaside holidays. Visit a few of the diverse townships in the area and get a taste of the laidback lake lifestyle. Create your own fun fishing, bushwalking or even just building a sandcastle on the beach. Drop a line from one of the quality fishing spots, or hire a boat and spend the day on the water. Swansea Channel and the area off Marks Point (known as The Drop Over) generate good catches of Flathead, Bream, Whiting, Jewfish, and Tailor. Visiting game fishers will delight in the Big Fish Bonanza tournament, held on the first weekend of February. For a simple and fun activity, put on your walking shoes and go exploring. Caves Beach is well known for its namesake, a small network of sea caves located at the southern end of the beach. Lake Macquarie is also home to countless walking trails, many with water views. For a scenic outlook not to be missed, hike to the summit of Mt Sugarloaf and take in amazing vistas of the lake and surrounding Hunter regions. While visiting, it would be a crime not to swim one of the beautiful unspoilt beaches. Blacksmiths and Caves Beach

Further south, Catherine Hill Bay is a historic mining village that has been largely untouched since its development in the 1800s. White gums and ramoxes Ceramics by Merric & Arthur Boyd from the Bundanon Trust Collection This exhibition presents the ceramic work of Merric Boyd (1888–1959) between 1910s and 1950s and that of his son Arthur (1920–1999) from the 1940s to 1980s. These will be supported by a selection of oil paintings, etchings and drawings by the artists. The title derives from two characteristic motifs in their work: Merric was preoccupied with interpretations of trees, while Arthur’s ‘ramox’ is typical of his interest in metamorphosed and hybrid figures. 10 FEBRUARY – 13 MAY

Business to Business GROWING YOUR BUSINESS by Brett Gleeson
Two thirds of Australians now use the internet to research their purchases before they buy or shop online. Many are now using their smart phones to check the prices of competitors whilst in another store. On the other hand, only 39% of Australian businesses use the internet to promote their business and facilitate online sales. Compare this to Sweden with 90% and Germany at 84%, Australian comes in a 8th on the list, just in front on New Zealand. Businesses with an online presence perform better and are more optimistic about the future those who don’t. There is a fair bit at stake with a 126% increase in online retail sales in the 12 months to May 2011. Currently the online retail market is worth an estimated $9.5 billion. The growth of online sales has been rapid across most
generations, particularly in the younger generations, ie Gen Y (21-29 years) and Gen Z (<21 years). The younger generations are adopting the new technology at a rapid rate and they are not slowing up. So, is your business reaping the rewards of adopting new technology or are you slowly (or maybe even rapidly) but surely being left behind? If you are, then it’s not too late. Now is the time for action. Get some help to get online. Brett Gleeson Centre Manager Business Growth Centre www.businessgrowthcentre.org.au

Valley View, Cessnock
Cessnock Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. The Darkinjung people were the major indigenous inhabitants at the time of European contact and the City of Cessnock still abounds in indigenous place names and names with indigenous association such as Kurri Kurri, Laguna and Congewai. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including

automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries.
The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.
What to See & Do ■ Visit the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery and view their current exhibitions featuring Australian artists. ■ Take in the scenic views from the Bimbadeen Lookout on the Great North Walk. ■ Tour the many local vineyards in the Lower Hunter.

Peter Sesselmann was born in Sydney in 1964 to an artistic family that moved to Norway when he was just two. He has always been interested in music and art and started playing guitar at the age of 10 and built his first guitar just a few years later. At the age of 15 he started training and study to become an Artificial Limb Maker. In 1981 Peter moved back to Australia and completed his studies in Sydney RALAC. At 19 he bought into a small jewellery business in Sydney with his father and brother. Unfortunately, Peter’s father passed away shortly after buying the business. It was a tough time but the business slowly turned around. However, in the early years there had been simply no time to play music or paint. After a while Peter focused more on marketing
and eventually decided to join a band again after many years of silence. This was when he met his wife Anita who was the lead singer. Although the band was not a great success, Peter and Anita’s union is still going strong. After 20 years Peter realised that he could not continue down this path that had taken him so far away from his love of music and art; so he sold the company and now focusses on his passion. He is back to his roots, painting and playing music as well as making musical instruments for musicians all over the world. His Gallery is open most days. 245 Frame Drive, Sawyers Gully (5 mins from Kurri Kurri) www.peterman.com.au

February in your garden
Start your Pest & Diseases Patrol Check your garden for pests & diseases as they spring up when the conditions are hot & humid. If you have roses check for aphids, caterpillars or other pests. Make sure you get rid of any diseased leaves or flowers and bring a sample in to your closest Gardenworld centre so we can diagnose the problem. Check your indoor plants to see if they are surviving the summer as well as they should. Any large shiny leaf plants should be wiped with a mixture of diluted white oil and water, (to help combat scale & mealy bug). They can be moved into a
shadier spot if needed as well as being placed outside in light rain for a couple of hours Weed your garden as they use up valuable water & any nutrients the soil provides. Paths, driveways and paved areas can be sprayed with Zero or similar Glyphosate products. Keep the water up to your garden. After the heat the soil often forms a crust that makes it hard for the water to penetrate. You can aerate your soil with a fork, or even better still use a wetting agent such as Wettasol to help retain any water your garden receives. Particularly at risk are your shallow rooted plants such as azaleas, gardenias & camellias. Lee Rowan's Gardenworld Pacific Highway, Heatherbrae Ph 02 4987 2302 www.leerowans.com.au

Morpeth
www.hunterimag.com.au
Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style. It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth.
As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town. You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth. A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking. Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and

Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food
and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay. The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook. For more information on the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, please go to www.apvt.com.au
What to See & Do In November 1874 there was a gruesome discovery in the creek at Tocal. The news soon spread around the district and made headlines in the Sydney papers. Step back into 1874 and experience the excitement, hear what the experts had to say and what the workers around the farm thought about it. Based on a true story this production combines the talents of Upstage Theatre with Tocal's heritage location for a memorable evening.

2012 - The Year of the Farmer Welcome to Upper Hunter Country on The Inland Adventure Trail 2012 is the Year of the Farmer; a year when all Australians recognise the value of farming and agriculture in our daily lives. It is a year when the history and heritage of our rural communities are highlighted, the spirit of communities, large and small, which take flood and drought, bushfires, thunder, lightning and hail and a huge variety of pests in their stride. But amongst the troubled years in our fragile environment, there are many great years with record cereal crops, the fattest cattle, delicious milk, the finest wool, vintage wines and parstures that turn this wide brown land to emerald green. Our farmers work from daylight to dusk and with modern equipment, well into the night to give us the finest produce in the world for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Upper Hunter region is home to the second largest thoroughbred breeding area in the world, the envy of England,Ireland and Europe. Merriwa and Cassilis produce the finest cattle and wheat and are home to the famous Golden Fleece. Muswellbrook and Denman have fertile rive flats that can grow any crop and we are surrounded by hidden valleys with vineyard and olive groves. From the mile high mountain farms of
the Barrington Tops birthplace of the mighty Hunter River, to rich river flats and the wide rolling broad acres of the west, we welcome our visitors and invite you to get to know more about agriculture that is so important to our region, our nation and indeed our global neighbours in far off lands. When you are passing by, stop and have a chat to the folk who have stewardship of some of the most productive farmlands in the world.
