Coffee Shops in the Hunter

What is the difference between a Flat White and a Latte?

In my mind these are essentially the same drink, in fact at Real Coffee we only use cups—that’s right! No Glasses except for water and the ones I use for reading. If you ask for a Latte in Italy you will be presented with a glass or cup of milk. Latte is Milk. Of course in Australia or ‘Straya’ we like to shorten everything so holler for a latte and you will be presented with coffee and milk combined together in some form of drinking vessel. My preference is a cup for all our coffees because they are easier to hold when hot; utilising the handle provided. So by definition a Flat White is a shot of coffee topped with steamed milk and a Caffe Latte is a shot of coffee topped with steamed milk; the

difference being that Flat White is Australian and Caffe Latte is Italian as Cafe au Lait is French and Milch Cafe is German. They are all milk coffees! I think traditionally an Aussie Flat White may have been a black coffee with milk added (possibly hot) but now it is accepted as a shot of coffee with steamed/ frothy milk. So really the difference between a Flat White and a Latte is the vessel it is served in. The measurements are the same for the coffee in both and the milk is frothed/steamed the same so it really comes down to the way you want to serve it in your cafe or even at home. COFFEE

The ambiance of King Street Confectionery leaves a lasting impression. From the polished timber counters and display cases housing incredible handcrafted chocolates and confectionery, to the authentic antiques throughout the store—each with their own story. The scent of perfectly extracted coffee While the bustling Riverport days have long gone, oftenthedominates the store and sometimes you atmosphere of simpler times remains. Unwind with a Coffee,hand-tempering a Chocolate and a Friend can observe of the Belgian at King Street Confectionery Raymond Terrace. Chocolate on the huge marble bench while your order is being prepared. Occasionally you will see the bench full of freshly made musk sticks or peanut brittle being poured out to set. All-natural flavours are used in the handmade Ganache centres, the intensity of each, delicately balanced to complement its decadent chocolate casing. Some of the chocolates are made using very local ingredients from close-by gardens and orchards. Almost all of the chocolates and confectionery

available are gluten free and all of the common food allergies are catered for. Chocolates can be selected individually and are carefully presented in boxes, complete with ribbon, and are ideal gifts or appreciators. Old-time lolly favourites are available too, all of which are Australian made and can be selected from timber display cases. Relaxing with friends over a coffee and chocolate are the order of the day and with footpath dining available, you can imagine a bygone era in this original river port’s main street, which is now heritage listed. 15 King St Raymond Terrace NSW 2324 02 4987 5113 www.kingstreetconfectionery.com.au

Hunter Valley Electric Vehicle Festival 2016 The annual Hunter Valley Electric Vehicle Festival will be featuring its sixth electric vehicle competition, culminating in the primary student prize race on 13 August and the high school student prize race on 14 August at the Newcastle Kart Raceway in Cameron Park. The Electric Vehicle Show is on at Cameron Park on both days of this action packed weekend of races and demonstration vehicles on the circuit and we are expecting a show of electric, hybrid, fuel cell and hydrogen vehicles on display. The Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment at the University of Newcastle initiated the festival with two goals in mind: to encourage and attract more school students into careers in science and engineering, and to stimulate clean energy manufacturing in the region. NOISES OFF

Visit Nobbys Lighthouse – the perfect winter activity

Known as the funniest farce ever written, Noises Off is a play within a play as a cast of Z-list actors rehearse and perform an English bedroom farce called Nothing On. The first act is a slap-stick dress rehearsal with enough interruptions to test the patience of a saint. The second act is set ‘back’ stage where mayhem ensues; and finally, the third act is back to the 'front' nearing the end of the 10-week run and things are well and truly falling apart at the seams.

Grounds are open every Sunday 10am to 4pm and entry is free. Parking is located adjacent to Nobbys Beach. The lighthouse is an 800-metre walk from the car park, with a steep climb at the end; so comfortable walking shoes are a must.

by Michael Frayne

While the characters may be Z-list actors, NTC’s actors are first class! Our cast includes Lynda Rennie, Brian Randell, Andrew Black, Rebecca Wall, Paul Sansom, Tracey Gordon, Michael Smythe, Jennifer Halliburton and Jay Smith. So dust off those winter blues and head out to NTC for a highly entertaining night out. Newcastle Theatre Company 90 DeVitre St Lambton. Ph: 4952 4958. newcastletheatrecompany.com.au

Once you have completed the climb you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of Newcastle. This view is special as most vantage points look out to the Pacific Ocean rather than back on the city itself! There is a small kiosk on site serving tea, coffee, cakes and other light refreshments. However, visitors are welcome to pack their own supplies and make the most of the beautiful 360-degree views.

Raymond Terrace Historic King Street Heritage Festival Photographed by: Peter Kincaid Photography (www.peterkincaid.com.au)

Situated where the Hunter and Williams Rivers meet, about 25 kilometres north from Newcastle along the Pacific Highway, Raymond Terrace is home to Port Stephens Council. It is also the hub for the surrounding river flats farms and communities with two shopping malls and all essential services. The town has been bustling with a variety of industries since the early 1800’s and there are many beautiful historical buildings and attractions to remind of its long history. Good sandstone was quarried close to the town in the 1800’s and used in the local Anglican and Catholic churches, houses and stores. The Old Rectory and historic St. John’s Anglican Church are a wonderful example of these building. The Old Rectory has been lovingly restored and is a beautiful venue for a high tea or other special events. In its early days, a tannery and a steam sawmill were also built, and boat and shipbuilding, farming and dairying became important industries. The business centre developed in King Street, adjacent to the river, where many of the old two storey timber shops and residences still stand today. Nowadays you

can sample delicious chocolate and wonderful coffee at the famous King Street Confectionery, or discover treasures in the King Street Antiques and Collectibles shop. The ‘Terrace’, as it is called by locals, has a large sporting community and there are many sporting fields and facilities including a golf course, lawn bowls, tennis courts, netball courts, cricket, football and soccer fields. The Williams River is a popular skiing spot and hosts annual skiing events and boat racing, facilitated by two boat ramps close to the city centre. Riverside Park is located adjacent to the Hunter River on Hunter Street just a short walk off William Street, the main street in Raymond Terrace. This park is ideal for a rest spot or for a picnic with its scenic river views. The park boasts a great playground, barbecue and picnic facilities and a public wharf. Leisure and entertainment activities are catered for by the Hunter Botanical Gardens, an Aquatic Centre, Ten Pin Bowling Alley, YMCA Gym and Scotty’s Cinema. There are plenty of motels situated close to town and a choice of caravan parks.

A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. 30

Kurri Kurri is famous for its Murals, they are a wonderful expression of our history and region, and tours are available all year round, we have many coach groups coming into town to view these amazing outdoor artworks and are proud to be the biggest Mural town in Australia. There are now over 50 murals, making Kurri Kurri the largest mural town in Australia. New murals are currently underway. The Hunter Valley is a feast for the senses As Australia’s oldest wine region, the Hunter Valley has established a reputation for worldclass wines crafted with expertise passed down through generations. Steeped in 180 years of history, Hunter Valley Semillon has been described as “Australia’s great gift to the wine world”. The region’s Shiraz regularly tops best-of lists. These and many other varieties are on offer at the 130 cellar doors dotted throughout the picturesque valley. Nestled between the Pacific and New England Highways, the area is an hour's drive from Newcastle, the Great Lakes, Hunter Wine Country or Port Stephens, and 2 hours from Sydney's northern suburbs. Dungog is a charming little town with its wide main street, original shops and cafés – so different from what you would find in today’s shopping centers. Browse through a collection of locally handmade goods, boutiques, antique shop and extensive garden center or visit the historic James Theatre; the oldest still-operating purpose-built cinema in Australia. There are a range of accommodation options, including intimate B & B’s, craft retreats, wilderness resorts, cabins, cottages and camping grounds within close proximity to town. We also offer our very own limousine/car hire for outings and functions. The surrounding area, including the Barrington Tops National

Park, provides fantastic terrain for nature lovers. Chichester Dam is a great place to picnic with the kids, and Chichester State Forest offers beautiful riverside camping spots. For further information about the district please contact the Dungog Visitor Information Centre on 02 4992 2212 or email wendyf@dungog.nsw.gov.au

There’s lots to love in Lake Macquarie this winter Winter is a wonderful time for taking in the scenery of Lake Macquarie, which is renowned as being some of the most picturesque in New South Wales. Lake Macquarie has a fantastic network of shared pathways all around the City which provides the perfect way to explore everything on offer and take in the stunning scenery on your bike or on your feet. One of the best pathways for lake views is the shared pathway from Booragul to Croudace Bay. This mostly flat pathway allows you to cycle or walk all the way from the Art Gallery to the grassy expanses of Thomas H. Halton Park off road, following the lake’s beautiful foreshore.
