Hills & Hawkesbury In March 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip set off to find more suitable land for agriculture and travelled up the Hawkesbury River as far as Dangar Island. He returned the following year and navigated the river to a point upstream of Windsor. Governor Phillip and his party reached this area by

boat on 6th July 1789 and named it Green Hills. He was impressed with its farming potential and quickly arranged for food production to begin in order to relieve the shortages in Port Jackson. Governor Macquarie named the settlement Windsor in 1810. This was the start of the Hawkesbury Hills

New museum exhibition - Interesting Objects: 60 years of the Hawkesbury Historical Society Collection What do a doll called Ruth, a miner’s couch and a 222 year old document have in common? They are all part of the new exhibition on show at Hawkesbury Regional Museum in Windsor. The exhibition pays tribute to Hawkesbury Historical Society, which has been collecting objects significant to the history of the Hawkesbury since 1956, when a group of history-lovers first met and adopted a Constitution setting out the Society’s rules, aims and objectives. That meeting eventually led to the establishment of the Hawkesbury’s first museum, in a building on Thompson Square (now known as Howe House) owned by one of its members. In 2008 Hawkesbury City Council built an award-winning new home for the Collection, which by then had grown to around 5,000 objects, and took over the running of the museum using professional staff and volunteers. Eight years later, the museum continues to attract large numbers of visitors, who come to see the objects so lovingly collected and conserved by the foresighted Historical Society, selected members of which are helping to create a special exhibition of those objects that they, as individuals, find the most interesting and significant. They include the Society’s first minutebook, kept by inaugural Secretary

Doug Bowd, a local teacher and historian whose books on Hawkesbury history are still regarded as essential reading. There is also the original Title Deed to the farm of ex-convict settler, Samuel Jackson, issued in November 1794. This deed is the only 1794 grant deed known in Australia. Other items include a celestial globe owned by renowned astronomer, John Tebbutt, an exquisite lace collar and 1920s black beaded dress, a miner’s couch and a model gaff-rigged cutter. Hawkesbury Regional Museum 8 Baker Street Windsor Wednesday - Monday 10am - 4pm Tuesdays by appointment Selected public holidays 10am - 4pm Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday.

Historic Howe House open for inspection Sat-Sun 11am and 2pm Free entry. For more information contact Rebecca Turnbull, Museum Curator, 4560 4439

INNATE – an exhibition by Melanie Duncan Visit the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden this autumn to experience Melanie Duncan’s earthy and grounding exhibition INNATE. Over time, the artist’s inspiration has been sifted from nature, the ocean and remote areas in Central Australia where connection to land and the stories entrenched within it stand strong to remind us that time is not linear. Melanie draws inspiration by immersing herself in the environment; for this particular show – in the Australian bush. Collective memories and feelings associated with a place, alongside observations at the micro level, are interwoven throughout her work as she responds to nature’s cycles and geological layers. Key elements in these abstracted interpretations include mark making and the art making process. The exhibition includes large works on canvas and paper, collage and intricate works using natural plant dye and found objects. Melanie returned to study in mid 2000 to allow more time and focus on her art. Her work during this period was predominantly inspired from living near the ocean and observing fragments washed ashore including blue layer creatures such as Bluebottles, Vellela,

8 www.monthlyimag.com.au

Purple Snail and Porpita. She was also influenced by a broader perspective relating to the cyclical journey of water through the ocean and back to the sky. After completing her Fine Arts Honours Degree in 2008 (UNSW - COFA) she moved to a remote aboriginal community in the Northern Territory (approximately eight hours from Alice Springs) which impacted profoundly on her art making practice. “The mighty presence felt while being immersed amongst this ancient land, the energy it holds, the heart and soul of the people and the feelings associated with

these experiences are infused in my more recent work where I am reminded of the concept of time.” …Melanie explains… “The stories and culture live in the land and the daily and seasonal cycles go on to extend to a magnitude of millions of years where one year barely represents a ripple.” Experience the concept of natural time and energy through Melanie’s eyes at the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden from March 12 to April 28. Free entry with exhibition items available for purchase. Entry to the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden is free.

Parramatta was founded in 1788 by Governor Arthur Phillip as a western outlying farm colony of Sydney. Initially it was called Rose Hill and was renamed Parramatta, an Aboriginal word meaning “head of waters,” or “the place where eels lie down”, the year after it was proclaimed a town in 1790. It was incorporated as a municipality in 1861, became a city in 1938 and was expanded in 1948, 1959, and 1972 by the inclusion of surrounding centres.

Lost Bear Gallery is proud to present ‘Wild’, an exhibition of new paintings by Robyn Collier. A well-known wilderness painter, Collier is a proponent of contemporary realism who has devoted her 40-year career to capturing the landscapes and seascapes of Australia. Collier bushwalks and travels extensively, making her niche by painting areas of difficult access. Her camera is an invaluable tool, as the places she visits are often too remote to carry heavy painting gear. This time spent in nature is essential to her studio practice, as she cannot work

While the original homestead dates from c. 1840, Mutton Falls, built in 1860 by Richard Mutton for the Webb family, was originally used as a farmhouse and dairy and boasts a wonderfully colourful history. Wallerawang/Portland In 1863 Thomas Murray selected land that would later become the site of Portland and he established the first lime kiln on the corner of Lime and Villiers Streets. Both Portland and Wallerawang are blessed with two historic public houses, schools, fascinating historic buildings, lakes and fishing streams, delightful little stores and friendly people. Portland is famous as the Town that built Sydney due to its Cement works and Wallerawang is famous for its Black Gold (coal) associations with Delta electricity. Portland’s Crystal Theatre hosts cinema as well as art shows and is famous for its street fairs. Portland’s big swimming pool has celebrated 50 years and Wallerawang’s historic old station’s heritage redevelopment has led to a florist, lolly shop, café and art gallery.

Ironfest 2016 titled ‘Holy Grail’ will take place over the weekend of April 16 & 17 at the Lithgow Showground, with a preview on Friday 15th April. Hrs: Fri 1500hrs – 1800hrs, Sat 0900hrs – 1800hrs, Sun 1000hrs – 1600hrs ‘Holy Grail’ will have a decidedly medieval feel – think: Monty Python. However, it could also be a personal search for the ‘holy grail’; an ‘introspection’, a search for change or maybe even an agent for change. What you do could be the change for someone else. Ironfest is life changing – come and find it. Make it your crusade Some will come dressed up as tradition requires; while others: Cosplay; some will Steampunk, some in Sci fi; some in 70’s (no one in 80’s)- but no matter what - they will come dressed for fun. And they will find a brave new world; military hardware with flowers; hippies & knights; warriors with maidens; rebels with causes; steampunk revellers & dancers & music; theatre; blacksmith’s & steam engines & other engines; and the best handmade products from all around the country. And great food
