From the Editor October There is surely no better way to showcase a region than to celebrate with a festival or two! The Southern Highlands and surrounding areas have an outstanding array of events for you to enjoy during the coming months. The Dam Festival in Warragamba will feature a Car and Bike Show. As well, amusement rides for the children, market stalls for the parents and free entertainment will be on offer during this fun filled, day-long, October event. With a Garden Ramble in Bundanoon and Open Gardens in Robertson there is much to keep the lovers of natural beauty delighted over the coming weeks. If you have an interest in art, we have two events to whet your appetite; Southern Highlands artists will hold their annual Art Studio Trail in November; a perfect opportunity to purchase that unique gift, as artists open their doors to those art buffs keen to see where local artists live, work and create. As well, you can make your way to the Grace Hotel
in Sydney for a creative porcelain exhibition that is inspired by nature, peoples and world events. Early in November, Viva la Gong will bring the heart of Wollongong alive with an eclectic mix of music, art, food and a street parade. As well, Campbelltown City will hold the annual Fisher's Ghost Street Parade as part of the Fisher's Ghost Festival. Highlights include, fun for kids, carnival rides, fireworks and more! The village of Windellama will once again host a Small Farms Field Day in November. This will be an educational, fun, family day out. The day will feature sustainability and rural-focused exhibits, lectures, market stalls and live entertainment. As you take part in all of the festivities this month, be sure to carry your iMag with you and take the opportunity to enhance your stay by visiting a market, a gallery, or a village, then lunch at a local winery and indulge in a cool climate wine.

Macarthur
www.highlandsimag.com.au
Camden, Narellan, Campbelltown Macarthur - the best of both worlds! Where can you find a vibrant city with modern delights, enjoy the tranquillity of nature reserves and historic charm, but also revel in adrenalin packed activities. Macarthur is less than an hour’s drive south-west of Sydney and includes the cities of Campbelltown and historic Camden. Throughout the region, the history of colonial settlement is reflected in the large number of heritage listed buildings; Camden Park House and Macarthur Park are fine examples of 19C architecture prevelent in the area. The Macarthur district played a significant role in the birth of the Australian Wool, Wine and Wheat industries. History books tell us that John Macarthur was responsible for our success as producers of fine Merino Wool, but historical records show that Elizabeth Macarthur, his wife, played a larger role than he did. John & Elizabeth Macarthur established convict built Belgenny Farm on part of the original 5000 acres granted to the family by Lord Camden in 1805. Today, Belgenny Farm is a major educational centre with direct links to our agricultural history. It offers specialised educational and environmental tours, giving young people and special interest groups a chance to learn about agriculture and its history in NSW. Macarthur is rich in history but also in art & culture. There is a diverse range of cultural venues including
a number of small boutique art galleries such as Struggletown Fine Arts Complex. Campbelltown Arts Centre and the Campbelltown Entertainment and Exhibition Centre are the entertainment heart of Macarthur. Macarthur is bordered by scenic hills, nature reserves and the Georges and Nepean Rivers. The beauty of the nature reserves and wildlife trails will surprise and delight with spectacular flowing streams, rock escarpments and native flora and fauna. For a superb day out, visit one of Macarthur's most interesting attractions; Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan offers a lovely family day out in the midst of 416 hectares of Australian bushland. The facility includes picnic areas, a restaurant, over 10 kilometres of walking tracks and a native flora research facility and NSW Seedbank. Historic Berrima
Berrima & Moss Vale
www.highlandsimag.com.au
Bundanoon Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs.
18 www.monthlyimag.com.au
Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Robertson Robertson is a pretty rural village with breath-taking scenery, spectacular waterfalls and rainforests in nearby National Parks. Lush surrounding farmland and country lanes complete the picture for this 'not to be missed' visitor friendly village, which lies at the edge of the Southern Highlands. In Robertson, you’ll find cosy cafes and restaurants, antiques and collectables, galleries with regular exhibitions, and a heritage railway station. Many shops specialize in goods that are both hand - made and Australian. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering, cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe. The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland, it is recognized as the “green heart” of the

Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive. There is much to discover. Stud cattle, sheep and alpacas graze green pastures. Rich, deep, red soils grow the legendary “Robbo Spuds” - Australia’s most sought-after potatoes. Nearby are three of the longest drop waterfalls in Australia. They all plunge from rugged sandstone escarpments into rainforest canyons and valleys. Barren Grounds nature reserve has wonderful wild flowers and easy plateau walks to coastal views. The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama.

Viva la Gong celebrating diversity in our community 9 November
Viva la Gong returns to Wollongong’s MacCabe Park on Saturday 9 November 2013 and, once again, this annual celebration of cultural diversity in our community has a lot to offer. The free event, presented by Wollongong City Council, encourages everyone to Discover, See and Do something new. This year Council has coordinated a number of satellite events in the lead up to 9 November, which showcase our city’s creative talents. These include the Globe Lane Festival, a Papergirl Exhibition and a forum being held with the South Coast Writers’ Centre. On Viva day itself, things kick off at 11am with the popular street parade which winds through Wollongong’s CBD to MacCabe Park. In the park there’ll be a range of musical performances including Triple J unearthed artists Ngaiire and Kira Puru and The Bruise. The Creative Hub and Workshop Zones are also back with activities for everyone. Plus, throughout the park there’ll be market and food stalls selling everything from one-off arts and crafts to delicious snacks and meals. You could certainly eat your way around the world at Viva la Gong! For the latest news on Viva la Gong events and activities please visit Viva’s Facebook page. This is updated regularly with the latest news and hot tips of what to Discover, See and Do on and before 9 November. Viva la Gong is just one of the great events on offer by Council over summer. It’s joined by the Twilight Markets on the first Friday of every month at Wollongong’s Flagstaff Hill from October, and our annual New Year’s Eve celebrations by the Harbour.
