The owners of the cafe realised their family dream when they took over the shop in October 2015. Their daughter had already been a cook at the café for three years, and when the opportunity arose, they did not hesitate. They wanted to offer their local customers and those traveling, somewhere relaxed to dine where they left feeling satisfied, without the empty pocket feeling. Drayton’s Log Press Café delivers excellent, friendly service and wholesome meals. It caters extensively for gluten free diets. All of their cakes are made in house with a wide selection of gluten free tarts, cakes, and their popular baked cheesecakes and lemon meringue pie. Their cheesecakes are simply amazing and you can tell how much pride goes into them – they are made with a whole lot of love. Kurri Kurri and Cessnock to Wollombi

Photo: Susanne Aurisch, editor of Hunter iMag, Wollombi

A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. 18

www.monthlyimag.com.au

Kurri Kurri is famous for its Murals, they are a wonderful expression of our history and region, and tours are available all year round, we have many coach groups coming into town to view these amazing outdoor artworks and are proud to be the biggest Mural town in Australia. There are now over 50 murals, making Kurri Kurri the largest mural town in Australia. New murals are currently underway. Don't forget to look for the kookaburra in every mural, some are quite difficult to find. To book a tour, enquire about projects contact the Kurri Kurri VIC 4936 1909.

The Hunter Valley

Hunter Valley vinyard Photo: Susanne Aurisch, editor of Hunter iMag

The Hunter Valley is a feast for the senses As Australia’s oldest wine region, the Hunter Valley has established a reputation for worldclass wines crafted with expertise passed down through generations. Steeped in 180 years of history, Hunter Valley Semillon has been described as “Australia’s great gift to the wine world”. The region’s Shiraz regularly tops best-of lists. These and many other varieties are on offer at the 130 cellar doors dotted throughout the picturesque valley. When you’re done tasting the nectar of the gods, you can soak it up at one of more than 60 restaurants showcasing locally grown and made produce. After all, nothing matches better with Hunter Valley wine than Hunter Valley cheeses, chocolates and olives. And it’s not just your taste buds that will be tickled by a visit to the Hunter Valley. Art lovers can soak up the region’s rich cultural heritage, from Wollombi’s Sculpture in the 20
