Coffee Shops in the Hunter
Common Grounds, Morpeth
Common Grounds is a fresh new café, formally known as Le Beau café, in the historic town of Morpeth. After extensive renovations to their shop, they have had their grand re-opening in June with a highlight being the new Takeaway Coffee Window, open from 7am every day. Just like their food and coffee, they wanted that 'hand made artisan' feel
reflected throughout the venue, and they achieved that in beautiful style. Common Grounds are Glee coffee roasters, who pride themselves on good, quality coffee. Enjoy coffee with a picturesque view overlooking the river. There is sheltered outdoor seating available so you can take in the views all year round. Relax at Common Grounds with table service. Come in for breakfast, lunch or even brunch and enjoy their delicious selection of food, drinks and, of course, coffee. They have catering options available; perfect for groups and parties. Walk-ins are welcome; however, they take bookings for larger groups so you can secure the perfect seat for your occasion. Common Grounds are passionate about good coffee and food.
The perfect location ... Common Grounds has a great view overlooking the river. We serve Glee coffee, all day breakfast, lunch & fresh sweets daily and High Teas. On the move? Take us with you in a takeaway cup. Our takeaway window is open from 7am!

Olives and olive oils seem to have been rediscovered by Australians, perhaps aided by post World War II migration of European and Middle Eastern peoples. The olive has become an integral part of our modern society as indeed it was in the Mediterranean regions since time immemorial. Our modern day emphasis on healthy foods and efforts to defer the ravages of cardiovascular disease have added to this renewed interest. At Tintilla Estate we decided to plant olives along with our vines in the tradition of the Greek Oracle. Being in Pokolbin with a coastal “sun and sea breeze” influence they have done exceedingly well. The Olive Grove was planted in stages as there was no local wisdom as to what would do well. Started back in 1994, we planted a Manzanillo

Showing 5 - 29 July. Edward Bond gives us a quirky theatrical experience with this social satire, blended with elements of comedy, tragedy and farce. It portrays English eccentricity at its best and draws themes from The Tempest and the Greek tragedy of Orpheus’s descent into hell to rescue Eurydice. The regular lifestyle of inhabitants in a small isolated town on the East Coast of England in 1907 is disrupted by a shipwreck in a storm. The coast guard who believes survivors in such conditions are really hostile aliens, refuses to get involved in a rescue effort. The constant firing of the nearby army’s battery reinforces his beliefs. However, when the self-appointed moral doyen hears of this, she decides to dispense her brand of justice. What follows is “masterful” (Time Out, New York). Newcastle Theatre Company 90 DeVitre St Lambton Ph: 4952 4958 newcastletheatrecompany.com.au

INHERIT THE WIND By Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee
Newcastle’s Civic Precinct Located in the heart of Newcastle, the Civic Precinct provides cultural and recreational spaces for Newcastle residents and visitors. The area comprises of Newcastle Art Gallery, the City Branch of Newcastle Regional Library, the Lovette Gallery, Civic Park, the Civic Theatre and Playhouse, Newcastle City Hall, Newcastle Council's City Administration Centre and the Newcastle Law Courts. In July 2017, the University Of Newcastle will open NeW Space, a $95 million landmark education precinct that will house the University’s Law and Business Faculties, a digital library and be the home for collaborative learning and research. Civic Precinct is bounded by Hunter, Darby, Queen and Auckland Streets and offers an array of live entertainment venues, cafes, shops and businesses, including a unique strip of stores specialising in bridal and formal wear. If you take a short walk through the streets of Cooks Hill you will find an eclectic array of dependent art galleries dispersed by a couple of old pubs and small cafes. Civic Park is home to the popular Olive Tree Markets which are held on the first Saturday of the month and offer contemporary handmade art and design with over 120 stalls selling unique artisan wares.
Heralded as one of the best court dramas in history, Inherit the Wind follows a fictional account of the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial. The trial centres around a substitute teacher violating the ‘Butler Act’; a law that made it unlawful to teach Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution to state funded schools. Two lawyers, who were old friends, become adversaries in the case that divided the whole country. With major political movements still garnering massive divisions in today’s culture, Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee’s exhilarating play on the separation of church and state remains relevant, powerful and promises an unflinching and exhilarating night of theatre. Newcastle Airport gets smart seating
This June the departure lounge received a face-lift with the installation of 241 state-ofthe-art seats at Departure Gates 1, 2 and 3. What makes them state-of-the-art you ask? Well, they’re constructed from a silver powdercoated mild-steel frame, have polished aluminium legs and arms, and are covered in a sexy leather-look upholstery. But, it’s not just their construction that makes
them so spiffy. It’s this, that’s going to blow your hair back. The new seats have power outlets. Yes, you just read that right. The brand-spanking new seats have power outlets so you can charge your device before you fly. And, Newcastle is proudly the first Australian airport to offer this wonderful invention, in this style of seat, to its passengers. So, next time you have a panic attack at the airport when you see that little battery bar turn red, be grateful that you’re at Newcastle because Newcastle Airport has your back. This face-lift not only looks sexy, but means they have added an extra 150 charge points to the existing 100 power points that were already in the departure lounge. It’s just one more reason why it’s smarter to fly from Newcastle Airport. Happy device charging.

The Old Rectory has been lovingly restored and is a beautiful venue for a high tea or other special events. Gordon Hanley, Australia’s only Living Master of Art, will exhibit 47 pieces in Morpeth Gallery ranging from $2,000 to $45,000. A former scientist, Hanley used his skills to reinvent metal point art – a technique originally used by Leonardo Da Vinci and other Renaissance artists such as Raphael and Michaelangelo, but which had been lost to the world since the mid 1500’s. It’s no exaggeration to say art galleries around the world are clamouring to display his works. Morpeth Tea Party in August This will be the final Weird & Wonderful Tea Party. Maitland’s Hidden Chocolate Gem
Sometimes our hidden gems become the most treasured, and one of Maitland’s latest hidden gems is certainly no exception. Tucked away in a little local nook – but not far from one of the region’s main tourist hot spots, Donarch Fine Chocolate has become a ‘must visit’ destination for locals and tourists alike. Located in the small village of Tenambit (not far from Morpeth), Donarch Fine Chocolate first opened to the public in mid 2016. Since then, this remarkable locally owned and family operated business has become somewhat of an institution. Community minded with a focus on premium quality and perfection, Donarch Fine Chocolate is regarded by many as the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of chocolate-making across the entire Hunter Region. From the very second that you walk through the door, it’s as if you have been transported to another world. You become surrounded by chocolate and your senses are immersed in an almost utopian chocolate inspired experience. From artistic chocolate displays to a unique variety of hand crafted delights, the quality, passion and perfection is breathtaking. Simple solids, bars and exotic ganache filled truffles; there is something here for every taste and budget. All products are beautifully presented and made with a sense of pride that can only be found in a small boutique business. Trained in traditional European techniques, boutique chocolatier Donna Archer hand crafts her mouth-watering creations using the finest chocolate from around the world. She prides herself on using premium quality ingredients and her passion for perfection shines though in all of the products that she makes.
In 2016 (less than a few months after opening her Tenambit store) Donna Archer stunned the country when she won first prize in the prestigious Royal Sydney Chocolate Show. Her signature Donarch Raspberry Heart achieved one of only two gold medals awarded and truly showcases her remarkable talent. In another unique twist, the journey doesn’t stop with chocolate either. Needing honey for some of her delicious creations, Donna wanted to ensure that only the best honey was used in her products. Not only did the honey need to be of premium quality, it needed to be fresh. Owning a small farm in a pristine corner of the Manning Valley, she installed her own bee hives and began harvesting her own honey. It is that honey that is now used in her famous Donarch Honeycomb and various other honey inspired chocolates. That same honey won first place in the 2017 Manning Valley Food Fair and is seasonally available for purchase. It’s a fantastic ‘Farm to Plate’ story and yet another unique aspect of a truly exceptional business. Primarily operated by Donna Archer herself and son Paul, the opening of their Tenambit store has generated much excitement. For most people, a visit to Donarch Fine Chocolate is a truly amazing experience. For chocolate lovers though, it is much more – it is pure heaven! Donarch Fine Chocolate is definitely a hidden gem and a must visit destination.

A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road.
