January Happy New Year! That’s right, believe it or not, the Christmas season is over, another year has come and gone and 2012 is here. It’s time to stop and relax with family and friends; to rest and rejuvenate; to take a breath before getting into the busyness of 2012. And there‘s no better place to do that than the South Coast. There is plenty to see and do this month. If you’re looking for thrills, head for the Huskisson Carnival, Jamberoo Action Park, Nowra Speedway, Shoalhaven Turf Club or the Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures. You can also take to the water with WOW Watersports or spread your wings with a NSW Air scenic joy flight. There is no shortage of big events either, such as the Kiama Show, the Berry Food
and Wine Show, Kiama Antiques and Collectables Charity Fair, Kiama Unique and Classic Car show and more. Find details of these and many more events in our ‘What’s On’ section on page 5. Again this month, we bring you our Boating, Camping and Fishing on the Coast feature to help you enjoy the great outdoors this holiday season. We hope you enjoy this edition and have a restful and fun-filled holiday. While here, you may be tempted to stay a little longer. Why not visit the Bayswood development in Vincentia, Jervis Bay to see just how affordable a South Coast sea change can be? You’ll find all the details on the back cover of this edition. See you around the South Coast.

Fishing on the Coast Outdoors and Beyond: A South Coast Icon
Fishing Tips and Tricks: Jetty Fishing Basics
With 10 years supplying outdoor equipment and watercraft and a store recognised as ‘the one with kayaks on the outside’, Outdoors and Beyond has become a South Coast icon. From its prominent position on the corner of the Princes Hwy and Central Ave, Outdoors and Beyond offers a huge range of camping, adventure, kayaking and leisure goods. Knowledgeable outdoor enthusiasts offer advice from their diverse, firsthand experience that includes 25 years of ambulance service, a cycle journey from Ireland to Japan, ski guiding in the French alps, technical mountaineering qualifications from alpine guides (NZ), bushwalking in Australia, ’tramping’ in NZ, hiking in the Himalaya and more. There is a Scout and Venturer leader who is an experienced climber and qualified to instruct in various water skills, rope work and navigation. Some of the team snow cave, snow shoe, sleep on porta ledges on the side of cliffs and go canyoning in the summer. There are also years of experience in kayak and canoe touring and marathon. They all care about friendly service and good products that work in the real world. Outdoors and Beyond Nowra introduced the legendary Hobie pedal kayaks to Australia and has been with Hobie ever since. Founder, Dave O’Toole, now has Hobie outlets in Huskisson, Caringbah, Mona Vale and the original Hobie shop in Outdoors and Beyond Nowra.
Memories are made in the summer holidays as many kids catch their first fish from the myriad of south coast wharves and jetties. The secret to keeping the kids entertained and enthralled lies in some good old fashioned bait and berley. It only takes a few minutes to grab a couple of loaves of bread and the remains of a good Christmas feed of prawns and you’re away. Simply mix the prawn heads and shells into a bucket with the bread and water until you have a slurry. Shovel the berley one scoop at a time with a cut down plastic milk container into the water and then toss in a cooked peeled prawn on a no 4 hook with a really really tiny ball sinker and light line and you’re in for hours of entertainment. Add a small float attached either side of a small swivel if you’re chasing mullet, and don’t forget to remind the kids why we throw the really small, and the really big fish back. Hiring a professional guide is also a great way to learn new skills and hopefully hook that fish of a lifetime. BOATING, CAMPING & Stingray 250CS Cruiser: Luxury and Performance The 250CS cruiser is Stingray’s largest and most accommodating boat. Yet, with an appropriate tow vehicle, this 25 foot cruiser can be trailered to endless destinations. It sleeps four in two berths, has a fully equipped galley and a fully-enclosed standup fiberglass head with mirrored vanity, overhead lighting, generous storage, sink, manual-flush toilet and shower. The 250CS was featured in the January 2008 Trailer Boats Excellence in Design issue, which spotlighted 45 leading trendsetter boats. ‘When it comes to boat cabins, it’s often the little things that count, and there are lots of those on board Stingray’s 250CS. ‘The overhead leading through the companionway into the cabin is sloped to add extra headroom—sure to be appreciated by the taller people.
‘The galley also represents forward thinking. ‘Besides a fiddled counter that helps keep things from flying off when the water gets rough, the coolest touch is the builtin organizer in the back, which has places to stash bottles of merlot, silverware, or other items. And because it’s deeply angled, what’s stowed will stay stowed, even in a sea. Sweet. ‘The 250CS’ sleeping arrangements will accommodate four and include a mid-cabin berth with an unusually tall entrance, above which you’ll find an upper locker in an area that’s often underutilized on other boats. ‘With so many little luxuries, you may never want to go back to land.’ For this and other Stingray boats contact Nowra Powerboats on 4422 1999. See ad on page 6 for details.

The Roo Theatre presents Babes in the Wood
So you’ve had dreams of becoming a pilot, or maybe you’d just like to know how it feels to take the controls, well hold on for the ride of your life when you take a Trial Instructional Flight (TIF) with NSW Air. NSW Air is a pilot training organisation that also provides introductory flights to those who enjoy a bit of adventure. The trial flights or TIF’s are similar to the first lesson you would receive if you were training to be a pilot. You sit in the command seat, you taxi out to the runway and you get to take off and manoeuver the aircraft whilst in the sky, making turns, climbing and descending, all the while under the watchful eye of a qualified instructor. The flights are conducted 7 days a week from the Illawarra Regional Airport at Albion Park Rail and start with a preflight briefing and aircraft inspection before being strapped in for the adventure. For those a little less daring, NSW Air offer joy flights where you can just relax and take in the view while your pilot does all the work. Either way you’ll enjoy a great view of the Illawarra and South Coast and have something to talk about for a quite a while. To make a booking contact NSW Air on 4256 1001.
Directed by Kim Hobbs, Musical Director David Wassink, Choreographer Joshua Maurer Synopsis Babes tells the story of Jack and Jill, and their larger-than-life Nanny Nurse Glucose. Jack and Jill are orphans after the death of their father, and have arrived in Nottingham to live with their Uncle Cedric, who also happens to be the sneaky villainous Sheriff of the town. When the Sheriff learns that Jack and Jill were left a fortune of fifty-thousand gold pieces in their father’s will, he plots to murder the Babes “a little”, therefore inheriting the fortune for himself. The Sheriff finds two assistants, in the form of Toyle and Trouble, two would-be robbers who fancy themselves as professional villains. Together they plan to kidnap the babes and take them deep into nearby Sherwood Forest, leaving them to perish, while the sheriff can grow filthy rich from their inheritance. However, deep in the forest resides Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men. Maid Marion the Sheriff’s ward, is deeply in love with Robin and grows very fond of the babes. When she learns of her uncle’s evil plans, she enlists the help of the Merry Men, and the adventure takes them into dangerous parts of the forest.

Visit the Little Blowhole Kiama
Kiama - Jamberoo Kiama The coastal town of Kiama is said to gain it’s name from the aboriginal word Kiaram-a which when translated from the local aboriginal language “where the sea makes a noise”, is undoubtedly referring to the famous ‘Kiama Blowhole’. At present, there is a wide assortment of things to do and see in the Kiama area. Walking tracks ensure that you can visit the Lighthouse, Kiama Harbour and both the Main and Little Blowhole with ease. Fishing, beach swimming and exploring the rock pools are also great activities. Some great cafes line the main street for those looking for a bite to eat and the Sandstone Terrace Shops make a great place to browse with friends. The Kiama Terraces in Collins Street date from around 1886 and are now classified by the National Trust. Many of the historical buildings can
www.southcoastimag.com.au
also be viewed and a top heritage walk leaflet is available at the Kiama Visitor's Centre.
Jamberoo
Jamberoo was opened up for grazing in the 19th century and, at the time, much of the original rainforest was shipped out to Sydney as building material. Jamberoo was settled in the 1820's when it abounded in dense vegetation and rainforest. Jamberoo today is a small but quaint village and visitors will enjoy a leisurely drive out to the town past the rolling hills and countryside. Jamberoo still houses many of the original churches and the schoolhouse with the local pub's age dating back to 150 years ago. Fredericks General Store in Allowrie Street can provide you with a local map should you need one. Minnamurra Rainforest Reserve and Jamberoo Recreation Park are top
attractions in the area to check out and should not be missed when in the area. The rainforest reserve is home to abundant native wildlife and spectacular waterfalls whilst the Jamberoo Action Park is fun for the whole family!
What to See & Do ■ Enjoy the many shops, boutiques and cafes. Check out the Kiama Terraces. ■ Take a walk in the Minnamurra Rainforest or head to Illawarra Fly Treetop walk. ■ Visit the famous Kiama Blowhole or to the Little Blowhole. ■ Be thrilled at Jamberoo Action Park.

The local Crooked River Winery has beautiful wine to both purchase or enjoy with a meal in their cafe whilst overlooking the picturesque pastures of the winery. Gerroa
What to See & Do
Gerroa is the closest town to Seven Mile Beach National Park, a grand and inspiring sweep of sand with an extensive dune system and a wealth of bird and mammal life. Gerroa developed as a holiday town, although Seven Mile Beach had been used for horse racing as early as the 1860s. In 1933, aviator Charles Kingsford-Smith used this beach as the runway for his pioneering flight across the Tasman to New Zealand. Gerroa offers easy access to several national parks and fine beaches as well as many of the prime attractions of the Illawarra, such as wineries, quaint country towns and historic attractions. The award-winning Seahaven Café
■ Visit the Village Craft Shop - they have very affordable, handmade gifts. ■ Enjoy a walk along the beach at Werri or Seven Mile Beach, or try surfing at Gerroa. ■ Take a dip in the rockpools at one end of Werri Beach or the natural lagoon at the other, perfect for kids. ■ Grab a meal at one of the cafes or restaurants around the main street.

Berry - Shoalhaven Heads Berry Set amongst rolling green hills with the backdrop of the stunning Cambewarra range, its striking landscape is unparalleled. Berry, the first truly rural town south of Sydney is a country experience like no other. WOW Watersports Fantastic Family Fun Says Mayor
Shoalhaven Mayor Councillor Paul Green and his family recently enjoyed the Shoalhaven lifestyle while experiencing firsthand the excitement, adrenaline and family fun of a day out with Walking On Water (WOW) Watersports. Councillor Green’s wife, six children and a family friend celebrating her 18th birthday all took to the waters of Fisherman’s Paradise recently with WOW owner Simon Twitchen. “Simon was completely professional from the time we arrived and were fitted with lifejackets to the time we said goodbye,” Councillor Green said. As usual, Simon provided a full safety briefing before starting the day's activities. The day’s fun included introductory wakeboarding, rides on an inflatable called ‘the biscuit’ and a demonstration of the capabilities of the highperformance Stingray powerboat supplied by Nowra Powerboats. It was the first time wakeboarding for the mayor and his family and they all managed to get up and enjoy a ride, H E E Nbut T E it R was P R Ithe SIN G on A Lthe T Ebiscuit R N A that TIVE fun was the highlight. “Riding the biscuit was great for family dynamics. “Parents have far too little fun with their kids these days and it was great

for me to be on with my sons and my wife on with our girls having fun together. “The adrenalin only adds to the fun with that little voice in your head that says “I will NOT let go”, and I didn’t”, he said. And would the mayor recommend the experience to other South Coast locals or visitors? “Absolutely. “It’s fantastic family fun at an affordable price in a region that is so well suited to this kind of activity with its beautiful waterways. “With WOW Watersports, you don’t need to buy your own boat to enjoy this experience. “But, if you are considering buying your own boat a day with WOW Watersports is a great way to be introduced to the sports,” Councillor Green said. To arrange your day of fantastic family fun, contact Simon Twitchen at WOW Watersports on 0417 360 791 or visit www.wow-watersports.com.au See the ad on page 9 for more information about the experiences on offer.

Kangaroo Valley
Kangaroo Valley The original inhabitants of Kangaroo Valley, the ‘Wadi Wadi’ people, shared the valley with kangaroos and other native species. In 1840 a local Pastor declared “This valley takes its name from the numerous kangaroos which abound here”. From the early part of the 19th century, cattlemen like Richard Brooks and Cornelius O’Brien acquired extensive landholdings in the valley. They were followed by Irish settlers who, to the delight of their neighbours, brought with them their “moonshining” skills. Gradually more settlement took place and a patchwork of small farms spread out as far as the escarpments, mainly concentrating on dairying activities. In 1977 the pleasant ambience of the entire valley and village was recognised by the National Trust. An outstanding feature of Kangaroo Valley is the Hampden Bridge across

the Kangaroo River with its impressive castellated sandstone towers. Opened to coach and cart traffic in 1898, the bridge was named after the then Governor of New South Wales, Lord Hampden. While visiting Kangaroo Valley make sure you call in at the Pioneer Farm Museum, a time capsule of life as it was 150 years ago. Kangaroo Valley is both pretty and dramatic – remnants of rainforest cling to the steep escarpment, while the Kangaroo River and small creeks crisscross the valley. Here you can enjoy the ideal ingredients of a short break – cafés, galleries, pubs, cabins in the bush and bushwalks. Kangaroo Valley Pottery located in the main street is a great place to pick up some local pottery and landscape artworks.

Spellbinding Family Shows During holidays don't miss the opportunity to be spellbound at an unforgettable night of spectacular comedy suitable for all ages, when Steven Spellmaster returns for his annual family show tour. The Steven Spellmaster Show consists of two hours of non-stop side splitting laughter with big sound, big light show and big crowds. With over 15 years' experience, over 2000 shows performed and tens of thousands hypnotised, Steven Spellmaster is by far the most experienced, most popular and most heavily booked stage hypnotist in Australia today. Among Steven’s most memorable appearances was the opportunity to hypnotise Hamish Blake on Hamish & Andy as part of their “Pants Off Friday” as well as regular spots with “The Benchwarmers” now Ant & Becks of Mix 106.5 FM fame and hypnotising the boys on The Footy Show. In an industry rife with cynicism and non-believers Steven best describes hypnosis as an extreme, deep relaxation and mediative state of mind where participants experience total mind awareness of everything they are instructed to do but yet so relaxed in body they lose their inhibitions and respond instantly to his suggestions. Participants in the show benefit massively from the experience as 20
minutes of hypnotic sleep is the equivalent to four hours of natural sleep as well as being left with the final suggestion from Steven of a two week after effect of unlimited energy. You can catch Steven’s show at Club Sapphire Merimbula Mon 2 Jan, Callala RSL Tues 3, Culburra Bowling Wed 4, Marlin Hotel Ulladulla Thur 5, Shoalhaven Heads Bowling Fri 6, Narooma Golf Sat 7, Tathra Bowling Sun 8 and Sussex Inlet Tavern Fri 13.

Are you a passionate chef looking for a new opportunity? Do you want to escape the city for a sea change with an established South Coast business? Successful Nowra-based business, Passion Catering, is up for sale. It comprises two businesses in one: a popular cafe and a renowned catering operation. The Café offers a delicious breakfast and lunch menu and take-home meals that are cooked on-site and ready to ‘heat and serve’. Located on the Princes Highway, South Nowra with good access and parking, the Passion Catering cafe is close to large retail and commercial businesses. It has a strong support base with locals stopping off after shopping in Nowra as well as tradesmen, employees from nearby businesses and travellers.
The catering business has bookings well into 2012 and services weddings, parties, functions and private dinner parties. As well as a strong local reputation, it attracts customers from as far away as Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne. Cooking classes are another branch of the business, conducted in-house and off-site. These include regular classes in modern cookery, finger food and three course gourmet dinner party cooking. The team also recently completed a contract for the Department of Veterans Affairs and Meals on Wheels, teaching mature-aged men to cook healthy meals. Passion Catering has a modern wellequipped kitchen, a fully-serviced and branded work van, a well-recognised logo, popular web site and strong client base. Business owners Glenn and Kim are proud of the business, which kept growing despite five years of world economic downturn. Nothing will change in the short-term with the same friendly staff, enthusiasm, attention to detail along with great food and coffee at the cafe. Kim and Glenn will work with the new owners to provide full training. Passion Catering thanks all of its customers and staff for their continual support. To find out more, contact Glenn and Kim on 4422 6000 or email glenn@passioncatering.com.au

St Georges Basin - Sanctuary Point - Callala Bay - Callala Beach - Myola - Huskisson - Vincentia - Hyams Beach Jervis Bay measures about 15 km from north to south and about 10 km across. The main town is Huskisson, where you can enjoy dolphin and whale watching cruises, fishing trips and boats, but it’s the natural beauty of the area that seduces. Other towns in this area include St Georges Basin, Sanctuary Point, Callala Bay and Beach, Myola, Vincentia and Hyams Beach. The bay’s beaches are impressive a series of scalloped coves bracketed by rock formations and backed by blackbutt, tea tree and mahogany forest. The bay’s sparkling waters, the underwater topography of arches, caves and rock stacks, and an impressive marine population make this one of the finest dive sites in the state. At its southern end, Jervis Bay is enclosed by Booderee National Park, a
pristine coastal wilderness. From Wreck Bay village on Summercloud Bay in the park’s south, a walking trail circles the peninsula to St Georges Head, passing quiet beaches, cliffs and forests. Huskisson is the location of many facililties including the Lady Denman Heritage Museum, as well as a variety of great cafes and shops to explore. Hyams Beach is surrounded by natural bush and is far enough removed from the ‘rat-race’ to be as peaceful a retreat as one can imagine with the added attractions of pure white sand and crystal clear water. Sussex Inlet Marine Centre
Sussex Inlet & Wandandian Sussex Inlet Situated 35km south of Nowra and 13km off the Princes' Highway, Sussex Inlet is a popular spot for water sports, being on the small river which connects St Georges Basin with the ocean. There is a population of some 4,000 permanent residents in Sussex Inlet and adjoining areas of Berrara, Cudmirrah and Swanhaven. A feature of the town is the housing development situated on a tidal canal system. The canal system has in fact caused the business area of Sussex Inlet to now be located on an island - It is known as the "Island Township". Activities include lawn bowling, fishing, sailing, golf, bingo, water skiing and swimming in sheltered waters. There are several boat hire businesses with small motor boats for hire. There are a large variety of wild birds in the area and kangaroos can be seen
feeding on the lawns of the houses at morning and evening. There are many accommodation businesses including caravan parks, cabins, motels, units and holiday homes available for rental. Sussex Inlet is the perfect place to enjoy some fishing with family and friends, turn to the next page to see our tidal chart with current tide times to help you plan your day.
Wandandian The town of Wandandian is located on the Princes Highway between Bewong and Fisherman’s Paradise. Its name comes from the word still used in the Parish of Wandrawandian, which according to older residents has an aboriginal meaning of 'home of lost lovers'. Wandandian’s beautiful rural atmosphere is enhanced by Kladis
Estate Wines, hobby farms, fruit orchards, galleries, arts and craft shops, antiques and nurseries.

Lake Tabourie - Cullendulla Bawley Point - East Lynne - Termeil - Durras - Kioloa Steamships were once built here at Bawley Point. Much of the timber used in the construction of these ships came from Termeil timber; a horse drawn train was loaded with logs and it clip-clopped its way into Bawley Point to be sawn by the timber mill, built in 1910, and at one time employing 72 men. Visitors to Bawley Point or to neighbouring literary-sounding East Lynne can enjoy tranquil beaches, headlands and lagoons where the prawns are a local delicacy, in season. Much of the area here has been reserved as a sanctuary for wildlife. Warm currents extend the swimming season with miles of quiet beaches and headlands fronting the south Pacific Ocean, which is studded with attractive small islands. Behind the coastline lie the lakes of Termeil, Meroo and Willinga, where vegetation and
picturesque views create an idyllic setting to the backdrop of Pigeon House Mountain. The district offers all kinds of fishing, surfing and swimming for all ages. For the bushwalker there are interesting paths to take through the bush or the Kioloa Forest. While in the district, seek out the small roadside cafes and shops where some of the walls and counters are thick with show awards for pies, rolls, cakes and other mouth-watering goodies - all produced in country kitchens.
This park features beaches, rock platforms, spotted gum forests and rainforest gullies, surrounding the beautiful Durras Lake. The extensive forest in the park is home to many animals. Eastern grey kangaroos, swamp and red-necked wallabies can be seen at dawn and dusk when they feed. Stay in a caravan, cabin or tent and enjoy everything the park has to offer - from walking and picnicking to swimming and fishing. Don't forget to visit Murramarang Aboriginal Area.
Murramarang National Park
Cullendulla Creek Nature Reserve
Murramarang National Park was created in 1973, with an area of 1970 hectares. The park was divided, into two sections north and south of Durras Lake, and included four offshore islands. In 2002 the park was increased to 11,978 hectares and now includes Durras Lake.
The reserve is on the northern shore of Batemans Bay and has beautiful views across to the Tollgate Islands. Explore the mangroves along a raised boardwalk. The unusual dune formations here are known as cheniers and are of great scientific interest.

South Coast lakes a natural wonder The South Coast’s natural wonders include lakes known as Intermittently Closed and Open Lakes and Lagoons, or ICOLLS. Four of these are Lakes Termeil, Meroo, Willinga and Murramarang - located between Ulladulla and Batemans Bay. ICOLLs are found all along the NSW coast, but mostly south of Sydney where catchments are generally smaller, experience lower average rainfall and higher average wave activity. ICOLLs become closed to the sea when natural sand beach barriers, or berms, form in storms, waves, tides, floods and winds. Once closed, rainfall runoff fills the lakes and they become tannin stained because of the ti-tree species around them. They also become less salty, and the fish, seagrass and birdlife adapt to the salinity changes. The lakes eventually overflow, washing the beach berm away to again become tidal and seeded with new life until the cycle recommences. Some people worry about water quality in closed ICOLLs but many maintain good water quality, suitable for swimming, water sports and fishing. Splash into summer at Lake Tabourie Tourist Park The place to splash into summer this Christmas is the Lake Tabourie Holiday Park, with its new aquatic play area bound to keep kids cool and happy all holiday long. The zero-depth aquatic playground is fully interactive, with kids having to find the buttons to activate the water spouts. Completed just in time for Christmas, the new aquatic play area is just the beginning in a long plan of upgrades which will include a new amenity building as well as change rooms, a BBQ area and more aquatic facilities. A pump track—a BMX track for young kids—is also being opened this summer.
Park managers Andy and Jill Cunningham say that with the current works being completed before Christmas, there shouldn’t be any disruption to campers over the peak holiday period. The upgrades, are aimed at providing more free activities for families, offering them a better value-for-money holiday. Other ideas being considered for future upgrades at the park include installation of a flying fox. This is on top of existing facilities which include two jumping pillows, two children’s playgrounds, a tennis court and mini golf. Lake Tabourie Tourist Park is just south
