FRIENDS AND FOES IMBA’S MISSION DRIVES US FORWARD
I
MBA’s growth in the past quarter century has been remarkable. Starting from a small coalition of clubs in the Bay Area—focused on gaining access to singletrack in California State Parks—we have expanded into a global association. The vital thing to understand about this growth is that IMBA’s core mission — to “create, protect and enhance great mountain bike experiences” — is just as relevant and powerful today as it was 25 years ago. There is an undiminished need for IMBA’s education and advocacy work. Reflecting on the challenges that IMBA has faced in the past, and the ones that stand before us today, it is evident that mountain biking’s foes are the same ones we faced at the outset. They are not the ones that may first leap to mind, like misinformed land managers or outspoken opponents to bike access. Those foes are real, but IMBA has proven that they can be overcome. Instead, the biggest threats have always been inaction and lack of organization within our own ranks. Although mountain bikers cling to the mythology that we were all once dirtbag ne’er-do-wells living out of trucks and subsisting on peanut butter sandwiches, the current demographics reveal a very different picture. How many riders do you know with a stable of expensive bikes but limited interest in supporting trail access? The point is not to shake a chain-greased finger and attempt to shame anyone, but rather to ask what it is that IMBA can do to inspire more participation in our movement. Beyond the bicycling community, how deep is the need in our society today for healthy, sustainable recreation? If you are reading this essay you probably agree that mountain biking on well-designed trails offers almost unlimited recreational possibilities, without compromising conservation values or depleting natural resources. There are millions of people who ride bicycles but have not yet experienced the joy of a ride in the woods on flowing singletrack. Inspiring more people to try mountain biking can have powerful implications, for both human society and the natural world. If that sounds overblown, consider a natural disaster that occurred in IMBA’s home state of Colorado last fall. A thousand-year flood on the Front Range scoured every mountain, valley and drainage, leading to massive damage to infrastructure and the tragic loss of lives. Amidst the widespread devastation, the natural-surface singletrack trails that were designed in accordance

with the principles of sustainability that IMBA has long championed held up very well. At first, that might sound relatively unimportant. But as communities returned to normalcy, and the bills for restoring damaged facilities climbed into the millions, the significance of these durable, enjoyable trails became clear. That experience offers real-world “proof of concept” for IMBA’s work. We know that for every mile of sustainable trail, there are hundreds more trail miles that could benefit from more attention. IMBA and its network of local groups, working in partnership with land managing agencies, have the knowledge and muscle power to improve trails. But do we have the proper organization — the organizational structure that will allow us to create widespread change? Last year was pivotal: A critical mass of over 150 IMBA chapters collectively contributed to a new structure for our association. Today, the chapter-based structure is yielding record numbers of members and engaged advocates. And, not inconsequentially, the chapter structure has also yielded record levels of revenue for IMBA to direct back to chapters, regions and local efforts. While non-chapter groups will continue to make significant contributions, we are seeing that the connections and services provided through the chapter program have created a powerful new dynamic to lead us forward. IMBA SUPPORTERS FUEL NEW GROWTH MBA’s many partners and members come from diverse backgrounds, but they all share two beliefs: 1) That advocacy is essential for preserving and enhancing trails, and 2) that supporting IMBA offers a great way to connect with mountain bikers. Since 1988, IMBA has led the effort to preserve trails for cyclists and promote sustainable trail building. Today, working with more than 150 chapters in nine regions of the U.S., IMBA’s network helps create bicycle-friendly land protection, preserve access and provide stewardship to thousands of trails, and has built a legacy of more than 10,000 miles of new riding. A growing membership and donor support will allow us to continue to build on these successes. IMBA experienced robust (12 percent) year-over-year membership growth in 2013, with individual memberships growing over 14 percent, largely due to growth of the chapters of IMBA. Donations and grants also experienced solid growth fueling key programs and projects. Corporate memberships increased 9 percent. IMBA invested in new regional staff and more “boots on the ground,” with positions supporting our chapters’ goals and regional impact. New staff were hired in the South Central Region (Steve Schneider), and shared positions were developed with chapters, including: MORC (Matt Andrews), MORE (Ryan Delaney, Holly Fischer), Copper Harbor (Lori Hauswirth), HMBA (Tammy Mebane), COMBA (Jason Bertolacci) and SORBA (Terry Palmeri). IMBA’s tent is big: We welcome all who care about mountain biking and urge everyone to get involved. IMBA’S 2013 GROWTH BY THE NUMBERS
IMBA INVESTS $3 IN CHAPTERS FOR EVERY $1 OF SHARED MEMBERSHIP REVENUE In 2013, for every dollar retained by the national office from shared individual memberships ($436,880) IMBA reinvested $3 dollars (2013 total of $1,289,584) to the direct benefit of its chapters. Growth in membership revenue trended positively from 2010 through 2013. But it is only the first phase of the chapter-based reorganization. IMBA will continue to invest in new marketing tools and training to create even stronger, more efficient chapters that will attract (and retain) greater numbers of individual members. DIRECT COSTS OF THE CHAPTER PROGRAM This analysis of the direct costs that IMBA incurs for the chapter program does not include overhead and some other indirect costs, such as accounting services, graphic design and program administration. It does not include the cost of Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew visits or Trail Solutions professional trail consulting.

Bell Long-time corporate supporter Bell Helmets steps up to the elite level with the 2013 introduction of Bell Built Grants. Specialized Specialized Bicycle Components supports IMBA’s work in many ways, including providing funding for the Public Lands Initiative, IMBA’s California Region and IMBA Europe. Trek Trek Bicycle Corporation donates $10 from every full-suspension mountain bike they sell to help fund IMBA’s Trail Building Fund in the U.S. and Canada. Trek is also the official bike of the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews. That support has led to hundreds of new miles of trails in local communities and new projects worldwide. SRAM SRAM Corporation and the SRAM Cycling Fund helped launch IMBA’s regional and chapter program in 2011 and 2012. The fund currently broadly supports IMBA’s Public Lands Initiative, IMBA Europe and the Urban Bike Park Initiative. Shimano Shimano American Corporation has supported IMBA advocacy and communications projects for many years. Currently, Shimano provides elite-level support for IMBA’s Mapping Project, featured on MTBProject.com. Subaru of America Subaru is the title partner of the Subaru/ IMBA Trail Care Crew program and has been since the program’s inception. During the last 16 years, Trail Care Crews have visited hundreds of clubs and communities delivering the signature IMBA Trail Building School and expanding opportunities for riding in every state. Subaru also donates to IMBA from each car sold through the Subaru-IMBA VIP Program.
