While plenty of hunters hit the woods and shoot at any animal that moves, there are plenty of hunting strategies that they could be taking advantage of. Below we take a look at four specific hunting techniques that will make the activity much more enjoyable and successful.
Utilize Tree Stands Hunters should set themselves high up in trees with tree stands. The higher that they can place these stands, the better off they’ll be. Look for a sturdy tree with plenty of cover like an evergreen. Only pick an evergreen with solid, sturdy limbs as thinner evergreen limbs are known for breaking. Cut away branches, leaves and any other coverage just enough to open up enough space to take a shot. Be sure to place markers down 10 and 20 yards away from the tree stand so that you are aware of the target’s distance and can obtain a “clean kill”. Shoot from the tree stand when the deer or other targeted animal is at rest instead of when it is on high alert or when looking directly at you. If the deer does look at you, stay still and try not to lock eyes. If the animal catches your gaze while you are up in your tree stand, immediately close your eyes. This reduces the chances that he’ll be able to determine that you are a human being. Once the deer looks away, take your shot.
Utilize A Bow Holster Attach a bow holster to your safety strap so that you can rest the bottom of your bow on it. This gives you an incredible edge for instances when a buck walks into your area. When you see him, you don’t want to be moving your bow around in preparation of the perfect shot. A bow holster allows you to rest the bow’s weight onto a sturdy surface so that you don’t have to hold the bow upright with your arms and hands. Follow The Food Many bucks will be on the prowl for food sources. Hunters who attempt to hunt fields that are cut will find it difficult if there are no crops around. Hunting stands should be moved to areas that can still produce food. Hunters might want to go as far as planting fall food plots as they will attract bucks during hunting season. Stands should be placed between areas with natural food and a source of bedding cover. Plot cameras typically reveal increased animal activity in these spaces between 11 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. So, hunt near food sources in the middle of the day to nab deer late in the season.
