Chris Dill While it’s true that simply using Facebook as a social media engagement tool is great for SEO, this is just a start. The truth is, there are so many businesses that have taken to social networking on the biggest social platform of them all, that this first step is no longer nearly enough. Creating a Facebook business page would have driven said business to the top of its industry just five years ago; today, it’s merely a welcome to the crowd.

Facebook Doesn’t Rely on SEO The biggest attribute of a social network is that it doesn’t rely on SEO. During algorithm changes, for example, when keywords lose a bit of their power, the social community will stay strong because the members don’t find each other through the search engines; Facebook is a self-contained platform that experiences even more visits than Google Search some days. With that said, it is very beneficial for a company to set up its Facebook business page for SEO, because Google outperforms Facebook when all of their separate web properties are combined. The favor falls in Google’s lap mostly due to YouTube, the premier video-based social network site.

Tried and True Tips The following tried-and-true tips are used by the most successful companies to get a leg up on the competition when setting up their Facebook business pages: 1. Because keywords are the crux of SEO and the URL for a Facebook page is customizable, it makes sense to place keywords in the URL. This is a straightforward and easy tips, since the brand names of most businesses have some combination of product keywords contained therein. The only caveat is that Facebook requires 25 fans before it allows a customized URL for the business page. 2. Facebook provides an ‘About’ box for individual users and business pages alike. Savvy companies make sure to include their keywords in this space, which is limited to 75 characters. This space should not be keyword-stuffed, because fans need to make sense of and resonate with it. A good idea to help conjure the right wording is to visit related forums and see what consumers are saying – as well as how they’re saying it. 3. The Information Page has similar utility as the About box, except it’s longer. Companies that put their business name, keywords and even a call-to-action here fare well. Direct examples of SEO are inclusion of website URLs, blogs, clickable phone numbers, Google

Plus profiles, LinkedIn profiles and other relevant links. 4. Smart businesses know not to ever put their full content on Facebook – they always put the beginning snippet, or summarize perhaps half of the key points. This ensures that interested readers will follow the hyperlink back to the website; which offers more opportunities for engagement and action. 5. Successful Facebook business pages never miss an opportunity to use high-resolution, relevant and engaging photographs. It’s no secret that people respond to pictures better than words; in fact, short video clips that deliver a message work best of all. 6. A Facebook Like box is essential – any good business has one. It’s akin to a call-to-action; the mere presence of the box encourages visitors to add themselves to it and grow the social network. Although there are several more things that can spruce up a Facebook business page, the above represents what constitutes a primary set-up program. Additional ideas help to further enhance the profile and can be done every day – such as the use of keywords in status updates.
