BEHIND THE SCENES A Letter from the President
Greetings! It’s the most wonderful time of the YEAR! Christmastime is coming! I love this season for every reason. I love to see the joy on kids faces as the anticipation builds up, the cold weather that makes you want to cuddle up next to a loved one with a cup of hot cocoa, the decorated trees, the great programs at church, and most of all to celebrate the arrival of the Savior as a baby boy! It is amazing to think that He chose to come here as a little infant to save us. The symbolism in that is amazing. We have just concluded our first annual event in Virginia Beach which was a HUGE success. We also celebrated the legacy of the Cathedrals in Akron and Fort Worth with the Cathedrals Family Reunion, and now we are doing our final preparation for the annual Jubilee Christmas tour featuring the Booth Brothers, Greater Vision and Legacy Five! This is always a great way to end the year, and I cannot wait to get out on the road with these guys for the next twelve days straight of Christmas productions! This has been a wonderful year of growth at IMC. We are constantly learning, growing, and dreaming of ways to make an impact using the wonderful medium of gospel music! For me, the greatest reward is to watch our patrons come out to our events with tears of joy in their eyes, or in a speechless state because of the hope and encouragement the artists music had on them during our events. Please continue to pray for us as we make some very brave advances in our company model in hopes to grow the exposure of gospel music. I want to see this music live on, and I am committed to seeing that through. See you on the road or on the water!

NQC THRIVING IN EAST TENNESSEE ARTICLE BY: DUSTIN ALLMAN; PHOTOGRAPHY BY: THOMAS FLEMING
Louisville: home of the Louisville Slugger, Muhammad Ali, and for many years the site of the nation’s largest gospel music ‘slugger’, The National Quartet Convention. But as most good things come to an end, the decision was made to move the NQC to Pigeon Forge this past September. When moving a large event, there are always going to be pros and cons, for essentially, both exist. But the goal was to make it more enjoyable than previous years. GMQ had the honor of catching up with Clarke Beasley to answer some questions about the big transitional year in East Tennessee. GMQ: How was the first year of transition to Pigeon Forge? Clarke: In terms of attendance, it exceeded all of our goals and expectations. We had the largest weekly attendance since 2001 and sold out five of seven nights, with the first half of the week experiencing 120% growth. GMQ: As with any transition, change is hard and critics voice their opinions. Are there any complaints or suggestions you and the board will take seriously and work to compromise on? Clarke: The main complaint in the concert hall was poor visibility. The NQC has already addressed this by committing to at least doubling the amount of video support in the main room next year. We have also received approval from the fire marshall to stagger the rows so that nobody is sitting directly behind the person in front of them. These are two changes that will definitely take place and other changes may follow. We will be announcing these changes and enhancements as they are confirmed. GMQ: Were there any much needed changes that took place this year, apart from the new venue and location, you and
the board feel committed to? Clarke: We were committed to reduce the overall cost of attendance, and with hotel prices being much less and admission prices remaining the same, we felt like this was accomplished. The NQC Board is so committed to this that they decided to not increase admission prices next year. Also, the hotels that participate in our room block are required to not increase their prices by any more than the CPI percentage. GMQ: Was there a particular watershed moment when you realized NQC would have to move from Louisville? If so, when was it and how was it discussed? Clarke: There wasn’t a particular moment, but the event was suffering attrition in Louisville, even though it was still successful. That, combined with our increasing anxiety about the safety of our attendees due to the mobility unfriendliness of Freedom Hall, made us realize around three years ago that it was time to relocate. GMQ: How much time and planning does it take to sustain the logistics, enthusiasm, entertainment, and ministry of NQC? Clarke: It’s definitely a year around task, and there are even some things that occur for the following year’s event before the current year’s event takes place. GMQ: Who are some other people that are absolutely critical to NQC’s success? Clarke: The first group of people would be the NQC Board. Their decisions combined with their year around promoting of the event is irreplaceable. Our creative production headed by our producer Phil Brower and our technical production FALL 2014 | 5
headed by Rob Snyder are also very critical. In addition, our video coordinator, Kim White, manages everything having to do with video capture. These people meet with the NQC Board at the November meeting as it begins its planning for the following year’s event. Our admissions are handled by iTickets and our registration and information counters are managed by a great team of people who have worked the event for many years and know the event well. This year, we also recruited 60 volunteers to help greet and answer general questions as people entered the facility.
This was solved on Tuesday by the city creating a dedicated route for those buses that routed them around Teaster and through the Island. It worked great and immediately solved the problem, but I regret that this wasn’t anticipated and put in place in advance.
GMQ: What was your favorite moment of this year’s NQC? Clarke: Probably the Mark Trammell Quartet’s performance of “The King is Coming” following David Jeremiah’s keynote address. His address was based on his recent book, “Agents of the Apocalypse,” and the strong eschatological theme of that address followed by the performance of “The King is Coming” was quite a moment. I also recall at the conclusion of the Cathedrals Family Reunion, a video was played showing Glen Payne’s performance of the last verse of “We Shall See Jesus.” When the last chorus started, a mobility impaired man tried to stand, but was not able to quite make it to his feet. However, his wife helped him up so he could stand during that last chorus. I still get choked up thinking about it.
GMQ: What is the vision of NQC going forward? Clarke: It was J.D. Sumner’s vision to create an annual gathering for the Gospel Music world where all of the major artists in the industry would gather at one place and at one event for a week long fan festival which would allow fans and supporters of Gospel Music to come to that one event and see all of their favorite artists, thereby creating a one stop shopping environment for those supporters. Being that all of the industry was gathered together, it could also serve an important trade show function for the Gospel Music industry. All of these years later, the NQC remains very true to that original vision and will continue to do so in the future.
GMQ: What was your biggest regret of this year’s NQC? Clarke: Our biggest problem of the week was the shuttle service from the overflow parking lot. The shuttle buses got stuck in traffic on Teaster Rd. and created long wait lines.
GMQ: What was the most surprising thing at this year’s NQC? Clarke: The biggest surprise was the overall weekly attendance exceeding all of our goals and even hopes.
GMQ: Thanks so much for your time, Clarke! Clarke: It was my pleasure to be interviewed, and as far as the pictures go, there are several pictures available on our website. Just go to www.nqconline.com and view the available pictures.

PENNSYLVANIA GOSPEL MUSIC FESTIVAL IN HISTORIC AND “SWEET” HERSHEY, PA
BY: DUSTIN ALLMAN
In September, The Pennsylvania Gospel Music Festival began it’s first year in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and there is little doubt that it quickly became a hit. Surrounding Hershey are wonderful options of great family entertainment, restaurants, museums, amusement parks, and of course, the famous chocolate factory. Fans could smell the aroma of chocolate throughout the air. The event’s new venue, historic Hershey Theatre, also won over a lot of fans with it’s unique history and Italian architecture. Terry Garland, of Portland, Oregon, stated, “It was definitely one of the nicest venues that I’ve been to in the United States. It’s a historical landmark, really.” Completed in 1933, during the Great Depression, it was part of Mr. Hershey’s vision to create and restore jobs in the Hershey community. The upcoming event list for Hershey Theatre is a plethora of broadway shows, celebrities, comedians, and even the Christmas music juggernaut, Mannheim Streamroller. But for at least one weekend in September, gospel music was the main attraction at Hershey Theatre. “The event was unbelievable. There were so many things to do in Hershey. But the artists were premier. They really were some of the best of the best. The production was state of the art. Nobody puts together gospel music festivals better than Landon (and IMC),” Terry Garland continued. The 2014 lineup included artists such as: Guy Penrod, Mark Lowry, Collingsworth Family, Booth Brothers, Mark Trammell Quartet, Dailey & Vincent, Triumphant Quartet, Stan Whitmire, Ball Brothers, 11th Hour, Todd Allen Family, Tim Lovelace, Signature Sound members, Doug Anderson and Devin McGlamery, and Dr. Phil Hoskins.
Jim and Helen Killian (attendees) were more than pleased. “I was thrilled with it”, says Helen. “We already have tickets for next year and we cannot wait to go again.” Her husband Jim pointed out that there were no disappointments regarding any of the artists, but there was one that truly stood out. “We loved Mark Lowry. He jumped off the stage and came out to us. His personality blends so well with the audience. It was like he was just talking to us and genuinely expresses how he feels about things.” Helen also made special mention of being astonished by the Allen Family. “They have such a neat story! All those kids, four girls fit in a bathroom of a motor home with a curling iron and they all get along!” Astonishing indeed. One of the great things about most gospel music events is the freedom to connect and develop a relationship with some of the artists. And as Dot Anderson (attendee) indicated, maybe the promoters as well. “Every year, I’d ask them to bring in Guy Penrod. I was so excited that they finally did this year!” Her husband was satisfied too. “He loves quartet music. He used to sing in a barbershop quartet, but we didn’t discover gospel music until we saw a Gaither Vocal Band special on television about 5 or 6 years ago, and we’ve been hooked ever since. She indicated among the quartets that The Mark Trammell Quartet and The Penny Loafers were definite highlights for her husband. They have already reserved tickets for next year. Terry Garland offered solid advice on the festival’s return. “Run! Do not walk to buy tickets for next year. It was a weekend to remember and a memory for a lifetime!”

What is more exciting than listening to Southern Gospel Music? Listening to Southern Gospel Music while at the beach! For the first time this past October, Virginia Beach Gospel Music Festival gave fans a chance to enjoy the last few days of summer while Southern Gospel Music filled their ears and hearts. Eastern Shore natives enjoyed three days of one-of-akind performances by the artists they love. Taking place at the state-of-the-art Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, this year’s event attracted a large audience for each of the five sessions. The evening concerts and morning devotionals included The Martins, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, Ivan Parker, The Hoppers, Greater Vision, Guy Penrod, TaRanda Greene, Gordon Mote, Dennis Swanberg and many more. Each session of the Virginia Beach event began with uplifting gospel music, followed by a mixture of testimony, a spoken word of encouragement and hope, as well as great moments of laughter. This year’s highlight was having Pastor Grant Ethridge from Liberty Baptist Church give the special message on Saturday morning and bringing along the Liberty Baptist Choir to perform with The Hoppers. The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts provided a great setting for hosting this event. There are more than four hotels and over 20 dining options within walking distance of the center. Virginia Beach is full of rich history and natural beauty that attracts a variety of fans and artists. The Virginia Beach event creates a great opportunity for fellowship and worship, not only through the devotionals and gospel music, but also from God’s beautifully designed creation of the surrounding landscape. Don’t miss this great event next year, October 8-10, 2015! Visit www.virginiabeachmusicfest.com for more information.

MUSIC CITY SHOW EXPANDS ARTICLE BY: CRAIG HARRIS; PHOTOGRAPHY BY: MARY ALICE LOVELACE
The launch of The Music City Show was Scott Godsey’s brainchild. It took some instrumental people to help it get off the ground. Now, in less than a year’s time, it’s reaching new heights. “We’ve been very pleased with the ratings,” Godsey–creator and producer of the show–says, “They are growing at a steady rate. The response from the fans has been incredible.” The latest break for the show involves the fact that RFD-TV has been added to the AT&T U-verse digital television provider. “That was a big accomplishment,” Godsey points out. “That’s 5.4 million more potential homes. It’s doing really well.” PHOTO: TIM LOVELACE WITH THE OAK RIDGE BOYS

“RFD is very happy. The show has gotten attention from Hollywood. It is at a point where Hollywood advertising agencies have taken notice. So, we feel like our advertising is growing, and that’s definitely a positive indication for the show.” The show premiered in November of 2013, and after two seasons consisting of 13 episodes each, the show has already begun filming for season three. While associate producers Bev McCann and Dave Wilcox were instrumental in the inception of the show, director Jim Yockey and assistant director Ashleih Godsey are instrumental figures in the show’s weekly composition. “The main reason we started the TV show was to showcase new music on a weekly basis,” Scott Godsey explains. “There are a lot of people who showcase music on radio. We wanted to be the premiere outlet to showcase new music with a live band and do it in a different way that might reach more people. It looks and feels like a late-night show. We showcased it differently to reach people who might be interested in the music but who might normally pass it up.” Godsey admits that early support from prominent groups such as Greater Vision and Legacy Five was instrumental in giving the show an early boost of credibility. “When we came up with the concept of the show and were nearing the time where we were booking the talent for the first two shows, we did not yet have a start date and air time,” Godsey notes. “We knew we were going to be on RFD-TV, 14 | FALL 2014
but we didn’t know when. The artists we asked to participate are very busy, so when Gerald Wolfe and Scott Fowler called me and said, ‘We believe in your vision for your show. We believe this idea and the way it’s going to be packaged will help us in our mission in reaching out…’ it meant a lot. Since that time, it’s become a lot easier. It was humbling that Gerald Wolfe and Scott Fowler had the confidence in our vision, to step out in faith and work with us in something that hadn’t been proven.” Scott Fowler adds, “First, I believe in him (Godsey), and I believe our genre needs all of the television exposure it can get. You don’t know if something is going to work until you try. It doesn’t hurt to try, especially when a friend asks you to try.” Godsey is quick to credit Fowler with more than just a boost in the show’s infancy stages. “If it wasn’t for Scott Fowler, I wouldn’t be in Gospel Music today,” Godsey says. “About three years ago, I started my own production company, and I was discouraged by the lack of progress I had made in Gospel Music, so I started working with and producing independent country artists. Scott Fowler and I were at lunch one day, and I was telling him what I wanted to do but that I hadn’t been given the opportunity yet. That desire was working in television and music videos, those types of visual media. Scott gave me the opportunity to work with Legacy Five on their social media and marketing. I produced their ‘Ask Me Why’ music video, and it played on dozens of DJstyle shows. It almost single-handily opened up the market for videos in our genre.”
The first season of the show had guest hosts, in addition to Tim Lovelace co-hosting on a regular basis. Lovelace eventually assumed the role as the permanent host, and he will again serve as the face of the show as season three begins. “Tim just fit like a glove,” Godsey points out. “He has a great personality. If you see Tim once, you’re not going to forget him. He’s very recognizable. From a hosting perspective, he’s a comedic genius. He uses that to his advantage. He always puts a positive spin on everyone’s ministry who comes across the stage. He builds everyone up.” There are multiple reasons why Lovelace enjoys being a part of the show. “There are a lot of things really,” Lovelace says. “Television is a fantastic way to reach people. It reaches outside of Gospel Music. With RFD, it’s a good way to reach many people that don’t normally hear some of the groups. Maybe they’ve been watching a rodeo or something else and see the show.” “When Scott does something, he does it first class. I’ve known him a long time. He is such a great guy, and he has put together a wonderful team.” However, Lovelace isn’t the only regular fixture on the show. Jim Sheldon–who is more affectionately known as The Positive Cowboy–performs classic Gospel songs on each episode. “I had been working with Jim Sheldon for several years when we came up with the idea for the Music City Show,” Godsey explains. “Creating a late-night show was one of the
things we wanted to do, but we also wanted to create weekly personalities. The Positive Cowboy is one of those individuals who is able to make people feel comfortable as he sings songs that are familiar to so many of our viewers. People at home can sing or hum along with those melodies that are sung with simplicity. It’s all about the songs, and Jim is as much a part of the show as Tim Lovelace is the host.” Like many late-night talk shows, there’s a house ensemble, the Blue Jean Band. It is comprised of Trey Ivey (who plays the keyboard and wrote the show’s theme song), Ricky Free (drummer), Kelly Back (lead guitar), Mark Fain (bass guitar) and Joel Key (acoustic guitar). “A lot of people discover new music on the late-night shows. In that setting, people seem to have an open mind about the new music. It may not be a genre they are familiar with, but it’s new and hot. The Music City Show is about music discovery from the ministry standpoint.” Scott Fowler believes that the show is hitting its intended mark. He emphasizes, “It’s good! The show is done well. It looks good. It sounds good. Scott has spared no expense to do it right. The show looks great!” Lovelace adds, “The very first time I saw the set, it had a real special feel. Being a musician, I love the excitement of having a live band accompany groups like the Booth Brothers, the Hoppers, Legacy Five and Greater Vision. The interview time is always fun. There’s a formula that has worked for the show. It’s a great time to not only let the groups sing, but also to get to know their hearts.”

FALL 2014 | 15
Among the season one highlights was the appearance of Ernie Haase and Signature Sound, the Bowling Family sharing their testimony about their bus accident, Taranda Greene talking about the death of her husband Tony, and the Jubilee Christmas episode involving Legacy Five, the Booth Brothers and Greater Vision. The legendary Oak Ridge Boys, McKameys, Brian Free and Assurance, and the Nelons were among the artists appearing on season two. Other artists who have appeared on the show are the Browders, Tribute Quartet and Joseph Habedank, who recently received a Singing News Fan Award for favorite new soloist. The viewer responses to those artists–and to the show in general–have been overwhelmingly positive. “When people find The Music City Show, they DVR it,” Godsey points out. “They watch every episode. In some ways, they see that this is something they have been longing for. It’s something fresh, and it focuses on a different artist every show. Once they find us, they seem to stick with us.” “It’s been an awesome response,” Lovelace notes. “Scott brings on exceptional young groups as well as established groups who have a rich history. What I hear a lot is, ‘I watch the show every week, or I DVR it, so I don’t miss it.’ I’m finding that loyalty factor.”
The likelihood of continually-improving ratings appears to be positive. They will continue in that effort as the season three premiere will feature the Crabb Family Reunion. “From a television standpoint, we have now reached the point where we have been contacted by other major networks who want to carry The Music City Show on a regular basis,” Godsey explains. “So, we’re looking to increase our coverage area. We are already on FamilyNet and Heartland, in addition to being on RFD-TV. We are talking about expanding beyond those three. We have been contacted by a Canadian network and some outlets in Europe, and people keep asking about The Music City Show on the Internet. That’s something we’ll have in place soon.” However, the show isn’t simply looking to grow in its viewership. It is looking to move forward in more ways than one. “As for the future of the show, we’re staying on course,” Godsey says. “We’re looking to expand, possibly taking The Music City Show on the road and creating and capturing a live concert experience. It will be The Music City Show on tour.” The future looks bright as The Music City Show continues to expand!
“The other side is that we have some guest artists who are not in Gospel Music, and their fans can tune in and enjoy the show and see how the Lord has affected their lives. So many people have said, ‘I’m watching The Music City Show. Where else can I hear the groups that you have on the show?’

CATHEDRALS FAMILY REUNION MAKING OF THE
ARTICLE BY: DUSTIN ALLMAN
INTERVIEW WITH LANDON BEENE, FOUNDER OF THE “CATHEDRALS FAMILY REUNION” There is no denying that there was a certain and special aura the Cathedral Quartet gave to a crowd that will be implanted in people’s minds forever. And if we may use the word “gave” in its most proper context, we could gather that it does not just affect our minds and memory, but our hearts, our emotions and our experience.
Reading about the Cathedrals cannot adequately convey the lasting memories, stories and influence they continue to have on gospel music today. But attending or seeing a Cathedral Family Reunion might just be the closest thing. Landon Beene, President/Owner of IMC Management, is one of the primary architects behind the Cathedral Family Reunion production. Beene has helped to bring back the Cathedrals so that many can relive those memories but also have an impact on generations to come. The phenomenon of the Cathedral’s music could stand for several generations. It’s still appealing to young people, including Landon. “Few groups were as heavily present in the church as they were,” Beene recalls. “The comedy, the songs and the sincerity of the artists attracted a young audience. I’m a result of that. Southern Gospel is largely affected by that.”
18 | FALL 2014
The influence of the Cathedrals on today’s artists is undeniable, especially those artists keeping the classic music of the quartet alive. When asked about the alumni groups today such as Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, Scott Fowler and Legacy Five, Mark Trammell Quartet or Gerald Wolfe of Greater Vision, “Their styles are unique,” says Beene, “but the heart of what they do is the same. They approach the audience with compassion and sincerity, they sing GREAT songs, they keep good business practices, and they show respect to others. What you could expect from George Younce and Glen Payne, you can see in the Cathedrals family of artists today.” Because this event and brand was largely founded by Landon Beene, IMC retains exclusive licensing and resources to the Cathedral name. Understanding that very few groups in Southern Gospel Music could transcend generations like the Cathedral Quartet, the idea was birthed to bring the former
Cathedral members together for a “family reunion” experience. The reception of the project was overwhelming. “The Cathedral Family Reunion is unique because our program features the artists in their current state (individual groups) but also together with the Cathedral family,” explains Beene. “It’s a special program that is well thought out, produced and protected exclusively by IMC. The material is only used for ‘family’ events. Through the use of technology, we are able to use video footage of the last performances of Glen, George, and Roger Bennett with current artists.” “For years,” Beene continued, “the Cathedrals were made up of many elements – producers, songwriters, management. When we embarked on this journey we joined forces at the BMI building in a room we called “the think tank.” With the help of Wayne Haun and his musical interpretation and artistry, we were able to collaborate and create a memorable event. Ernie Haase brings in the family element as George’s son-in-law and also has great programming ideas. We asked Ernie these questions...“How did he want George remembered? How could we memorialize the Cathedrals? What did he interpret from their performances and songs?” Gerald Wolfe was also there to help with the song selection and arrangements and to keep the music consistent to the true Cathedrals. Beene was there to offer his input on what would be needed from a programming standpoint from a fans perspective. What would a fan want to see, hear and do during these events? “Then to put all of that together into something like this is amazing,” reflects Beene. “The very basis of this event is that I want the fans to experience something as close as possible to what they would if they had attended a Cathedrals concert.” While at the event you can tour the last Cathedrals bus and fans can bring their own memorabilia to be displayed, making each event unique. Each Cathedrals Family Reunion production is different. Beene notes, “You hear Cathedrals classics, hit songs by the current groups, a historical lesson through photos and video, how they were birthed, and road sessions. They are now also implementing a Q&A session with the audience. It is rare to see anyone leave without tears in their eyes, filled with joy and wonderful memories.
As a piano player, those moments around the piano hold a special place for him. Beene’s favorite Cathedrals album, “Radio Days,” stands out in his mind for its simplicity. He loves those songs and the Southern Gospel heroes behind them. Bringing that to life for fans, new and old, today is certainly rewarding. “I’m getting e-mails every week. People are excited to bring the kids and grandkids to these events. The original Cathedrals have passed on, but they passed the torch on to incredible individuals,” says Beene. Beene shares that the Cathedral Family Reunion is by far one of his favorite events to be a part of in his career. He has always been a fan of their music. As a child, in fact, he longed to be on stage with them. “My dream was to be a part of the Cathedrals as a kid. I remember as a 12-year-old boy Glen asked me my goals and said ‘We need you in this industry.’ He later gave me a scholarship to the Stamps Baxter School of Music. As time would have it, the very month I moved east from California, the Cathedrals were retiring. Years later, now I’m managing and promoting them!” “Managing this brand is humbling and overwhelming,” says Beene. “I’m having to set new goals, because this has met a lot of my goals and aspirations in my music career. We are all a part of that Family Reunion. They made fans feel like family.” People often refer to the Cathedral’s Family Tree as a sort of “dynasty.” But the affections they helped stir, the individuals they helped along the way, the fans they connected with, are precisely the reasons why people can talk about them so casually. They cared. They knew they were mere men. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the definition of dynasty is “a powerful group or FAMILY that maintains its position for a considerable time.” The Cathedral Family Reunion is more than an event, tour, or DVD. It’s a dynasty that fans have been a part of for many years.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING... “The recurring thought for me was that George and Glen were the foundation of the group..but never made it just about themselves. They chose young men they felt would “fit” and then they allowed them to grow their talent within a “team” effort. To look on the stage and remember the individuals when they were first “Cathedrals” was gratifying. They had talent. They had drive and were given the opportunity and they earned that trust! The CFR was such a pleasure. Thanks to everyone that made it such a memorable event!” - KENNETH PAYNE (brother to the late Glen Payne)

A “BEHIND THE SCENES” TOUR ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY: SCOTT FOWLER
While in Israel, my pastor and I got to do something that none of the other 700 people in our tour group got to do. I want to share this awesome experience. I had one place I really wanted to see while in the Holy Land, but we were not allowed to go. After our official tour was done, we had the afternoon free before our flights back home. Rick (my pastor) and I were walking around in the Old City of Jerusalem. We had walked around the Jewish Quarters, the Christian Quarters, the Armenian Quarters and were now in the Muslim Quarters. We found everyone inside the city to be so warm and friendly. Some Muslim merchants were even coming out of their shops thanking us for not canceling our trip due to the recent conflict. As we continued walking down the alleyways just taking in all the wonderful sights, a 13 year-old Muslim boy stopped us and said, “I’m sorry, but only Muslims are allowed past this point.” I replied, “Thanks for telling us,” and he kindly asked us where we wanted to go? I told him we wanted to go back to the wailing (western) wall one more time. He said, “Follow me...I will take you.” So we followed this nice young man and he took us right to the wall. Along the way he pointed out all the points of interest and was a very good tour guide. I commented to him that he should consider being a guide and he proudly informed me that he “was a tour guide when he was younger...age seven.” We smiled and soon he had delivered us to the Wailing Wall (Western) as promised. We gave him a tip, and he asked us if there was something else we wanted to see before we left. Rick told him what we REALLY wanted to see was the Temple Mount. Young Mohammed asked me what time it was. I told him 1:25 p.m., to which he replied, “You must hurry.” He went on to say they would allow a few people in at 1:30 p.m. So he showed us where to go and we quickly went and got in line. Just as he said, they let a few people “in” and Rick and I were two of “the few.”
SCOTT FOWLER WITH MUSLIM TOUR GUIDE
“tour” in exchange for a tip to him... the amount of which was up to us. We readily agreed and embarked on a FASCINATING tour of the Temple Mount. He indeed took us to some “behind the scenes” places where we saw NO ONE ELSE. It was definitely one of the highlights of my trip. Although we were not allowed to go inside the Al Aqsa Mosque or the Dome of the Rock, he did allow to us take pictures as long as we did not speak to anyone. It was amazing to be standing there on Mt. Moriah, where Abraham took Isaac to offer him as a sacrifice in obedience to God, the site of the first and second Temple...where they housed the Ark of the Covenant, and where Christians believe the third and final Temple will be built. It was very interesting to hear this young man’s perspective on this holy site as it relates to Islam as well as his perspective with regard to the claims of this site by Jews and Christians alike. It was very evident to see how this single solitary spot will likely be the catalyst that will one day make and change world history. Rick and I felt humbled and grateful that God had given us favor and allowed us to visit, up close, this very significant place on earth. Additionally, we now know “how” to take folks there next October when we return with some of you. I want to implore you in the strongest way possible to begin saving some money and plan to go with Legacy Five and my pastor Rick White to Israel next October. The Holy Land is one place every single believer needs to experience. It’s life-changing.
I won’t do in-depth education now as to the significance of the Temple Mount (that will be another post but most of you already likely know). What’s important to know now is that the Temple Mount is under Arab control and Jewish people are forbidden to go there. A sign at the entrance declared such. Now I understood why it was not a part of our “tour” itinerary as many tour guides on our trip were Jewish. We passed thru the security check-point and entered the Temple Mount which houses the Dome of the Rock...the 3rd holiest site in Islam. We were immediately met by a 24 year old Muslim young man. He said there were certain places we could not go unless accompanied by a Muslim. He offered us a 45-minute PHOTOS (TOP TO BOTTOM): DOME OF THE ROCK; INSIDE THE AL AQSA MOSQUE

“READY TO SAIL” BY: DUSTIN ALLMAN
with The Erwins
What do you get when you combine three brothers and a sister, unique in their personalities and gifts, with a common desire to serve the Lord? The Erwins! Growing up in a family committed to full-time evangelism, Keith, Kody, Kris and Katie are no strangers to travelling and sharing the gospel. It’s what they know and what they love to do.
TOP TO BOTTOM: THE ERWINS AT DOLLYWOOD; CD ALBUM COVER; THE ERWINS ON THE MUSIC CITY SHOW
24 | FALL 2014
With a new album, “Ready to Sail,” and their recent signing with Stowtown Records, The Erwins are quickly making a name for themselves. Based in Edgewood, TX, Keith (21), Kody (20), Kris (18), and Katie (13), have experienced quite a whirlwind in their short lifetimes. The siblings, along with mom Tiffany, recently shared what it’s like being The Erwins, from life on the road to life lessons learned.
GMQ: You are on the road a lot. What do you enjoy most about it? Kody: Meeting great people around the country and sharing the stage with my brothers and sister almost every night. Kris: Seeing places that most people only read about! GMQ: Were you a big part of the creative process for your latest album? Did you have a theme or direction in mind? Kris: With this album being our first Stowtown recording, we not only wanted to make sure we selected songs that would speak to and encourage our audience, but we also wanted to find the right songs that would define who we are as artists. Since we are young, we wanted to sing songs that were age appropriate without minimizing the message. We are excited with the songs we have chosen. GMQ: What is your favorite song from your latest album? Katie: “I Choose to be a Christian.” I believe it has a message that we need today, and I hope it helps bring our generation to this great music.” Keith: “Ready to Sail.” This song was written specifically with us in mind. It’s written as a prayer, that we are ready for all that the Lord has for us...we are ready to sail! Kody: “Isn’t He God.” This song is so much fun to sing and has an awesome message about the greatness of God. Kris: “You Are Welcome Here.” This song has an important message that is often overlooked in a lot of our modern day churches. I’m thankful for the lyric that says no matter what you’ve done the love of God can make all things right. GMQ: How soon will you start thinking about your next album? Keith: We are already working on our next album. We constantly listen to songs, and we are actually trying our hand in songwriting for our next project. Katie has just finished writing her first song with our cousin, Ethan, and it’s a good one. GMQ: Who is the biggest influence on you musically? Keith: We have been privileged to attend the Steve Hurst School of Music for the last three years. What makes that school so unique is it is singers teaching singers. People like Steve Hurst, Mark Trammell, Pat Barker, Tribute Quartet, MaryAnn Ogelsby, and so many others. We are thankful for their instruction, their encouragement and their example. GMQ: Who is the one person you would love to meet? Kody: I’ll have to wait for Heaven to meet the person I would love to meet. I grew up listening to the Cathedral Quartet and have always wanted to sing bass like George Younce. Keith: Being a sports fan and Texas Longhorns fan, I would love to meet NFL quarterback Colt McCoy. I appreciate his play on the field and more importantly, how he stands for Christ in a less than Christian atmosphere. Hook ‘Em Horns!
Kris: Singer Mark Hall. He is an incredible songwriter and his songs always speak to me. Katie: If you would have asked me a year ago, I would have told you TaRanda Greene, but she has become a friend and a shopping buddy of mine! So now I would say Kari Jobe. She is an amazing singer with a sweet personality. I’d love to sit and talk with her about worship one day. GMQ: When you aren’t traveling, what do you enjoy doing? Kody: “When I’m not traveling, you will find me hunting, golfing or playing basketball. However, I’m getting married in February, so that will probably soon change...just kidding... I hope! Katie: I like to have PJ days, drink coffee, watch movies, eat popcorn and enjoy being home. GMQ: What do you hope your ministry looks like in five years? Keith: I pray it looks exactly like God wants it to look. We are certainly in a bit of a transition with my brother and I both getting married next year and with so many doors that have recently opened up for us. But we hope to just be in God’s perfect will, singing this great music and meeting lots of new people. GMQ: When asked who they admire, the kids unanimously said their parents. You must be proud of your children and their ministry. Is there an event or moment that stands out to you as one of your proudest moments? Tiffany: There is nothing that brings us more joy than to see our kids serving the Lord. It never gets old. We will never forget the first time the boys were invited to sing on the Main Stage at the National Quartet Convention in 2009. We had been attending NQC for about 10 years, and to see our kids on the stage, where so many people we admire have stood, left us speechless. That’s for sure a night we will never forget. GMQ: Now for some fun, what is it really like to travel with your family? Tiffany: When we first started having kids, we traveled in a van and pulled a cargo trailer. Wow! I don’t know how we did that. Today we have a bus and it is so much easier, but the bus does shrink. And I’m sure when my two future daughters-in-law come on board, it will shrink even more! For the most part, it’s easy and fun; but, I promise you...there is never a dull moment on the Erwin bus. There are always sporting events on TV, and we hardly ever pull for the same team, unless the Dallas Cowboys are playing. It can also get a little crazy when we are getting ready. There is only one mirror on the bus, so that can get interesting. One of our goals is to add more mirrors before February, when we start adding girls.
Check out their new album, “Ready to Sail,” available February 2015! Album will be sold at fine Christian music stores or online at www.erwinministries.com.

The Farmer Waits BY: ERNIE HAASE
As I travel each day I pass a farmer’s house. I blow my horn and smile and wave. He always waves back. Sitting under a shade tree, relaxing, he always has time for a friendly wave. It seems to me that he is watching his garden. Why wouldn’t he? In weeks ERNIE HAASE prior, he has worked so hard. He has tilled the soil and planted the seed. His energy and resources have been put to use once more. He is invested, to say the least. But he waits. He waits on the land to do what he cannot do. He waits on the seed to bring forth what he cannot produce. He waits on the rain and sun to nourish those seedlings. Ah, calmly he waits. The old farmer knows this universal truth: “You can’t hurry the harvest!” Only God knows how the crops will turn out this year for the old farmer. The farmer has seen both good and not-sogood crops over the years. But still he plants, trusting the land to yield its gift once more. Yes, he waits for when the picking is good. You know, we could learn a lot from that old farmer. We, too, plant our seeds of faith in prayer and ask the Lord of the Harvest for many things: a touch of healing for a friend, a blessing for our business, a new opportunity - whatever the case may be. But unlike the old farmer, we want the answer NOW. But as the farmer knows and shows us all, you just can’t hurry the harvest. It doesn’t work that way.
We are in God’s garden of grace. He cares deeply about how we grow. He is invested. He shed His own blood, gave His own life for you and for me so that we could grow into His likeness. He knows how long we need to be in the ground. All of our dreams and hopes need the nourishment of troubles, trials and hardships. Growth never comes easy. He longs for mature children who can stand the storms of life because they are fully rooted in Him. Remember, you cannot hurry the harvest. God is not concerned with time like we are. However, He is very concerned about timing. Relax and trust the Master. Wait on Him. Renew your strength. Harvest will come and it will be “Mmm, Mmm Good!” Although I still pass his house often, I have NOT seen the old farmer this entire summer (2014). I’ve missed his wave. I was afraid he had passed away. Finally, last week he was back in his folding lawn chair. I gave a blow on the horn and an enthusiastic wave. He waved back with a feeble hand. Something within me said that I should stop and chat with him, but I didn’t want to intrude or scare him. Still, just a mile down the road I did stop, turn around and go back to say hello face-to-face. He was very kind, and I was correct in thinking that he had been very ill. I asked if I could bring him a CD or a DVD to help pass the time and he said, “Naw, young man. I don’t have anything like that in my house. I’m just happy to feel the sun on my face. Thanks for stopping by and for the friendly waves. That’s enough for me.” I feel honored to have met the old farmer and shake his hand. And, I might add, learn a lesson that sometimes, “Less Is More” and “It’s Good To See The Sun.” FALL 2014 | 27
May the BY: DUSTIN ALLMAN
When Jim Brady announced he was departing the Booth Brothers to join the music ministry with his wife Melissa, the speculation about a replacement was different than most personnel changes. TH BOO L BOOTH, MICHAE The Booth Brothers are a group and ministry PAUL LANCASTER, RONNIE that, undoubtedly, consists of family, therefore being immune to very little turnover. Without at least two brothers, they would effectively cease to be the Booth Brothers as we would commonly think of biological brothers. But because The Booth Brothers seek excellence in everything they do and offered no open audition, they had their man pegged in Paul Lancaster. Some of our readers may be familiar with the name. He has been in and around the music industry for over a couple of decades. But if you’re not familiar with him, my aim was to find out about the man and introduce you to him appropriately.
Originally from Gadsden, AL, Lancaster began singing at his home church at the age of five, slotted as an alto in the choir. Falling in love with gospel music, he sought out to sing in part-time groups as a teenager. Through networking and meeting folks through a local gospel jubilee, he fell right in with a name that might also be familiar from the 80s and 30 | FALL 2014
90s, a family group called The Mullins. He indicated his time with them was unquestionably among the most impactful in his life. Lancaster sang with them for 12 years, but the most notable thing happened a mere two weeks into traveling with them.
continue...
“Two weeks in,” recalls Lancaster, “I see they are not just singing and talking about Jesus, but living Jesus out in their everyday life. The Holy Spirit used that to convict me of my sin, not just knowing about Jesus, but knowing Jesus. And on a bus outside of a little church in Texas, I was radically saved.” Pressing in on the fundamental reality of being a part of music that has real ministry behind it, Lancaster tells us what it is that drives him spiritually and personally. “God has been so much more faithful to me than I have to Him. Being 46-years-old, God has had much grace on me. He has redeemed me, even my self-inflicted wounds. What drives me is to connect with people and convey the gospel, not only through music, but in my life and actions. You might can sing great, but there’s no fulfillment if you’re not connecting with people.” God does redeem us from sin in fullness, but in doing so, He also redeems us from ourselves continually, molding us, shaping us, and preserving us. Echoing that thought, Lancaster provided some brief detail about his journey up to this point. “After I was with the Mullins all those years, I sang with the Nelons for a couple of years. But then I came home to be with family and work a regular day job and sing on weekends with my friend and neighbor, who lived two doors down -none other than Jim Brady. The opportunity to work briefly with the Martins came around 2003, and we actually recorded an album that garnered much Dove Award attention. But I went back home and was basically what some jokingly called a “stunt singer,” Lancaster says laughingly. During that period, Lancaster did some solo work, but also worked with many groups, filling in for various reasons, including Karen Peck & New River, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, The Greenes, and yes, even the Booth Brothers, filling in for Ronnie Booth for a short span. From 2009 to 2012, Lancaster found himself traveling with the newly reformed Palmetto State Quartet (PSQ) after Larry Strickland took ownership of the group. He gave some detail about how singing lead for PSQ stretched and challenged him vocally, learning control and pitch, making him a more effective singer. “Larry is married to Naomi Judd of the Judds, so we had the unique opportunity to travel with her, her daughter Wynonna, and even had the privilege to be part of a movie featuring her other daughter Ashley Judd, called The Identical.”
But Lancaster acknowledged that the travel and timing of things had burnt him out, even going through a season of discouragement and depression. “I began to question my purpose. I had very little vision for my life,” Lancaster explains. He soon found himself working in Industrial Sales, finding much success, but continued to sense a gnawing feeling that God had something else for him to do. “I performed great and God still said no. God made that very obvious. I finally began to find contentment in Him again. I realized that in drawing closer to Him, my circumstances had not changed, but I began to change.” During this season of life, Lancaster served as an interim worship pastor at a church in Northern Kentucky. It was at this time when the Booth Brothers called. There is no question that the Booth Brothers have an authenticity and special connection to their audience. This reality is one of the many reasons Lancaster decided to climb back on the bus. “Roger Mullins taught me that the music is nothing without an audience. That taught me to love and encourage the people I’m singing to. Michael and Ronnie Booth really embody that. They honor God in all they do. They seek excellence in music, but they know their purpose. They put others first. It’s not just singing and making an exit. It’s loving people and lifting Jesus up. I plan to retire here (laughing).” Paul indicated that the support and encouragement the Booth Brothers’ families have sent out to the Lancaster family speaks volumes about who they are as people. And what man is complete without his support? “I don’t have hobbies. Ohio is now my home and when I’m there, I’m taking kids to school, basketball practice, cooking dinner. They are my total focus. I have a wonderful wife, Michelle, who is a pharmacy tech, and three great boys, Alexander (18), Ethan (12), and Jackson (9). God has blessed me with a great family.” A family is indeed a part of the journey in this type of ministry and in this type of industry. Lancaster closed with this… “I’m not just thankful for the gift at the end of the journey, but the gift in the journey itself.” When the journey of our calling and our career intersect, it reminds us that before Jesus calls us to something, He first calls us to Himself.

new BY: THE MARK TRAMMELL QUARTET
During the past few months The Mark Trammell Quartet (MTQ) has been blessed to celebrate some new additions to their ministry! We are excited to present our new Christmas project, Home For Christmas, which we recorded with our friends, The Whisnants and inaugurated the genre’s first ever online launch party on November 3rd with over 1200 fans in “attendance.” Also, we are going back to one of Mark’s favorite vacation destinations with the new partnership of In Touch Ministries and the Gospel Music Celebration Cruise! But among the most thrilling news we have to share is the safe arrival of “Prince Charles,” Charles Mark Trammell, who joined the family on September 30th!
Many of you have asked us what our favorite destination is when it comes to Christian cruises. Alaska it is! The scenery is breathtaking. Abundant pine forests, majestic, snow-covered mountains, mighty iceblue glaciers, whale watches, fjords, sea lions lumbering on bobbing ice floes plus the must-see towns on the Inside Passage. This July we will set sail from Seattle, WA for a seven day Alaskan cruise. This voyage will take us to some of the most beautiful places on earth. Bring your Bibles and your cameras for an unforgettable week. We’ll study the Word of God with Dr. Charles Stanley and his son, Andy. We’ll have opportunities to photograph God’s creation as it unfolds before us. We will enjoy the stunning landscapes of Juneau, Glacier Bay, Sitka, Ketchikan and Victoria, British Columbia. All of this while enjoying some of your Gospel Music favorites. Babbie Mason will be on-board. As most of you know, it was on the Alaska cruise that Babbie and Rodney Griffin wrote the title song of our Your Walk Talks CD. So this cruise holds special meaning for us as we set sail on this particular voyage. WELCOME THE NEWEST MEMBER OF OUR MTQ FAMILY!
32 | FALL 2014
Nick has the joy of sharing about the new addition to his family. “It has been an amazing time for our family. My wife Jessica and I went in September 30th for the birth of our first son! Everything went well, and Charles (Charlie) Mark Trammell was born at 12:51 PM. He weighed 7 lbs. 11 oz. and was 20 3/4 inches long. Mommy,
Charlie, and our 2 year old daughter Tessa are doing well! Tessa loves her “baby brudder”! She already enjoys holding him! His name is, of course, a family name. My Grandfather was Charles Ray, Dad is Timothy Mark, and I am Nicholas Mark. God has blessed me with a family rich in ministerial history, and I am honored to pay tribute to that in my first born son’s name. I hope he is one day as proud of it as I am. “A special Thank You to everyone who prayed for Jessica during her pregnancy; she was on bed rest for the last month and kept a good attitude the entire time. She stayed strong when she had every reason in the world to feel down. You are my hero baby. I love you! Please continue to pray for my family and all of the MTQ families as we travel,” says Nick Trammell. We are also proud to announce that our new Christmas CD, Home For Christmas, is now available for the holiday season! Joining us in this new recording are our special friends, The Whisnants. We picked songs that will hopefully remind the listener of fond memories of Christmas past and songs that will also encourage them to want to make new memories with their children and grandchildren as well! But most of all, songs that will give the world a compassionate reminder that JESUS is still the real reason for the season! The CD contains four individual songs by the Whisnants and MTQ and then another four songs where we all sing together. We focused our collection of Christmas songs on the traditional carols that are favorites every year. O Holy Night, The Christmas Song, O Beautiful Star of Bethlehem and the arrangement of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen that Lari Goss wrote for The Cathedrals A Cappella album. The Whisnants brought a selection of new Christmas tunes to the project. One of those songs was sent to the family the morning after the passing of Jeff Whisnant’s father, December 23, 2013. Jeff says, “Christmas has and always will mean family. With the loss of my Dad on December 23rd last year, Christmas will always be a time to remember and celebrate his life as well. It will have a different feel this year, but knowing he is with Jesus makes it all okay. If You Could See What I See is a song written by our friend Sandy Blythe and speaks of how our loved ones are spending Christmas in Heaven. Susan did a wonderful job on it and I believe it will help and encourage many people who deal with loss at Christmas time.” Over the last few years we have found ourselves singing with The Whisnants near the holiday season, so it was just a natural step forward to record this project. Jeff, Susan, Aaron and the boys are connected to us by what is in our hearts, not just what is on a stage. There is a spiritual energy that emits from the stage when both groups minister together. The common bond untainted by carnal, fleshly, selfish motives is what we share as co-laborers in God’s work and is profoundly obvious that it’s the unseen power source that supplies that energy. This is not just a good business move. We cherish,
share and enjoy all the common threads and attributes of family. And the key to all of that is the little babe that was born in the manger. On November 3rd, over 1200 people joined us and The Whisnants for the online Home For NOW THIS IS A SWEATER! Christmas CD Launch Party. We spent twelve hours interacting with one another during this historic event in Southern Gospel Music. There were visitors from Canada, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Romania and we had folks signed up from 28 states! Being a first in the genre, no one really knew what to expect. Not the fans. Not the artists. What we found was an exceptional day of sharing our lives with one another. So many of you told us your stories and shared your family Christmas traditions and photos with us! It was a very special moment in the life of our ministries. What made this event so unique was the live, online interaction that remains archived on the event page. Some hot topics included Christmas sweaters, Hallmark movies, the snow or no snow for Christmas debate and Christmas cookies. Mark’s mom used to make wonderful Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies every Christmas Eve, a tradition he now continues. We also concluded that if you don’t like snow for Christmas, you are in the minority where our poll is concerned! Your favorite video clip was Without Christ There’s No Christmas followed by Snow or Snow and If You Could See What I See. Those who didn’t have a chance to join us during the event can still enjoy all the fun topics and interaction by visiting http://www. HomeForChristmasLaunchParty.com. We’d like to thank all our friends and fans who participated in this epic event. You not only helped us celebrate the launch of our new Christmas project but most importantly, shared in celebrating the One who is the center of the season. Thank you!

BEYOND THE STAGE: An Artist’s Questionnaire BY: MELISSA BRADY
Scott Inman followed in his father’s footsteps into music ministry and after years of singing in separate groups, they now have the privilege of singing together in Triumphant Quartet. He’s an incredible singer and an accomplished songwriter, and although he’s garnered many accolades for his talent, it’s his genuine love for gospel music and it’s fans that endears him to the hearts of all who hear him sing. We’re excited to pull the curtain back and meet Scott beyond the stage! What is your favorite moment of the day? When I’m home and my daughter, Embry, wakes up and is excited to see her daddy! Nothing like it! If you weren’t a singer, what would you be? Well, I grew up thinking I’d be a professional athlete. I played sports all through school and had all intentions of pursuing baseball but, at 17 years old, God put the desire in my heart to sing. I can’t imagine doing anything else but, if I had to pick, I’d say it would still be something to do with music or a part of the music business. Which living person do you most admire? It’s a tie. My parents, Clayton & Michelle Inman. They’ve been married 33 years and in my 32 years on this earth they’ve been a major Christian example. Now that I’m a father, I look at them and see what sacrifices they made during my childhood, and it just makes me respect and admire them even more. Of course my little girl is only 2 years old.... So I still have a lot to learn. What words or phrases do you overuse? “I’ll start my diet Monday” & “Hey!” What talent would you most like to have? I always wished I’d learned to play an instrument other than drums. Being able to play the Guitar or piano would be a great talent to have. If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be? Stop thinking about music for a moment. I’ve got it on the brain 24/7. That’s not a bad thing, since it’s my passion, but at times I need to step away and refresh. I can also worry too much. I’d gladly get rid of that if, it was that easy. 36 | FALL 2014
What is your most cherished possession? My daughter Embry, without question. What is your greatest fear? At some point, not being able to provide for my family. Which refers back to the worry thing… What is your motto? “I’ll start my diet tomorrow.” Do you have a nickname? Not really.... I’m either “Scott” or “Scotty” depending on who I’m talking to. All my family calls me “Scotty.” That didn’t really answer the question but there ya go, haha! If you were a color, what would you be? Mauve (I’ve always wanted to say that). Who is your greatest musical influence? My dad, Clayton Inman. He sang professionally my whole life and he has done this with class and the highest degree of professionalism. He has stayed the course and been a major example and influence for me. It’s been an honor to stand on stage with him for the last 12 years and sing together. What is your idea of a perfect day? Being home on a Sunday & taking my family to church, going to a local minor league baseball game, or just being with my family in any way. I also love “studio days.” Working on new music is a blast! What makes you laugh? Dry humor, shows like “America’s funniest home videos” or “ESPN’s / “not top 10.”
(L TO R): EMBRY (SCOTT’S DAUGHTER); KASEY (SCOTT’S WIFE), EMBRY, AND SCOTT; EMBRY READING A BOOK; KASEY AND SCOTT
What is your favorite sound? My little girl Embry saying “Hey Da -Da”! What does God mean to you? The gift of salvation that washes away my sins, grace and mercy, the ultimate friend, & peace. In other words....Everything. What is your greatest extravagance? At one time it was sporting equipment, then it was ties, shoes, clothes in general, now it’s gasoline! What books are currently on your nightstand? Kasey & I don’t have any books “on” the nightstand but we have stacks underneath the nightstand. Anything from Bibles to autobiographies. What CD is in your player? Phillips Craig & Dean, Diamond Rio, Danny Gokey, It changes daily. If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be? Keifer Sutherland (Jack Bauer). If there was a movie made of your life, what would the title be? “Focus Scotty, Focus!” What would you say are the aspects of true friendship? Trust, Trust, & Trust. What is your favorite gift you ever received? Don’t know if I have a favorite, but the most recent gift that meant a lot was a necktie that I received from Duane Allen of the Oak Ridge Boys. I’d told him a year prior that I liked it, just in passing conversation. One day out of the blue he walked up and gave it to me. That was pretty cool and proved he has a GREAT memory! Dog or cat? Dog! We have a Dog named “Sammie Girl” she’s 6 and is Embry’s little buddy. She’s great with the kid. What is your favorite song? It changes daily. I don’t know if I have a “favorite” but my favorite right now is “Hope in front Of Me” by Danny Gokey. I also love the hymn “It Is Well With My Soul.”
What is your greatest regret? Waiting ’til I was 17 years old to start singing. I had stage fright until then. Unless I was acting goofy or doing something funny, I WOULD NOT get in front of anyone and sing. Just 2 short years after I sang in front of an audience, I began singing professionally. Obviously the first few years were spent learning the hard way & learning about my voice. The simple things weren’t simple. It was all new to me. So, obviously, The Lord put the desire in my heart, and I’m so glad He did! If you could go anywhere, where would you go? Australia. What is the first song you ever sang? “Temporary Home.” At 17 years old, during a youth night at my church. I’m sure I sang something as a young kid, but I don’t remember any of that, LOL! What is the craziest thing that ever happened on tour? There are a lot of crazy things that happen in a year’s times on the road, but the most recent “crazy” thing happened back at the end of April. We flew to California for the annual Fan Fest in Visailia but, beforehand, Mr. Herb Henry booked us with his family in Modesto, CA. We chose to fly there “the day of ” the concert, so we left very early that morning from Knoxville. All was going well until we got to the Dallas Airport. We boarded this plane that was supposed to take us to Modesto, CA and we sat there....and we sat there. Finally someone came over the speaker and said, “This plane is unable to take off, due to an inspection, and we are going to ask everyone to unload the plane.” We were already cutting it close but had allowed ourselves enough time, except for a LONG DELAY. Well a few hours later, we finally boarded another plane and liked to never took off. When we got to the San Francisco airport we knew we had to make up for lost time. We all went our separate ways, just trying to get everything we needed so we could leave the airport. We took shuttle after shuttle, just to get to the rental car. Got in the rental car...and got stuck in traffic. Stand still, rush hour traffic, at this point we just wanted to get there and sing in the clothes we had on.. Plus we didn’t want to let the Henry family down. Long story short, we made it at 7:00 p.m. on the dot (concert time). The Henry Family sang before us that evening while we quickly changed clothes, and then we ran on stage and sang a 2 hour concert to a full church of people! Two things…1. I’m thankful we got there. 2. We learned a good lesson...Leave a day early! FALL 2014 | 37

The Gift of a
SMILE BY: TIM LOVELACE
The other day as I was driving down I-75, I was going over a list of things I needed to do for the day. As I was attempting to prioritize, my list seemed to grow. Please don’t misunderstand me. I thoroughly love to work and enjoy being busy. I count it a privilege and a TIM LOVELACE blessing, but I am being very honest with you. Some days there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to accomplish the to-do list. As I was driving, I saw a car in my rearview mirror that was starting to pass my vehicle. The car wasn’t going much faster than I was, so as it slowly passed, I noticed a little girl in the back seat looking straight at me. She was smiling as big as all outdoors. Everyone’s smile is a joy to me, but this little girl was doing more than casually grinning...this was an awardwinning smile. As the car traveled past me, I noticed she was looking through the rear window and was continuing to smile at me. My to-do list was no longer my focus. It was going to be an awesome day! All day long I recalled the priceless gift I had been given...the gift of a smile! Why does a smile affect us this way? There have been many studies to show that smiling releases chemicals in the brain that make people happier. Smiling has been known in various experiments to boost the immune system by increasing the white blood cell count. Another great physical response to smiling is that it lowers the heart rate. Some studies point to less heart disease from those who laugh and smile a lot. Smiles are contagious and more often than not, when you
smile at someone, they will smile back. You not only have helped your physical and emotional well-being, but you just helped someone else. Often times, a smile or genuine laughter does more than all of the words we are trying convey. The entertainment world shows how a winning smile adds to the charisma of many successful actors, artists and musicians. Stop for a moment and reflect on a few of your favorite singers. Whether secular or gospel, they bring a winning smile to the stage with them. There are very few exceptions to this rule. While I was writing this morning, I recalled as a child watching on television a hero of my faith, Dr. Billy Graham. I can still envision him standing before thousands of people with a radiant smile quoting scripture and presenting the plan of salvation. He was not smiling so people would believe what he was saying, he was smiling because he believed what he was saying! What better way to live out our faith in Jesus Christ than to wear heartfelt smiles. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, not only in word and deed, but with a genuine smile.

20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY GET-TOGETHER (L TO R): MARK TRAMMELL, CHRIS ALLMAN, GERALD WOLFE, RODNEY GRIFFIN
STILL “ON A JOURNEY” GREATER VISION BEGINS THEIR 25TH YEAR BY: GERALD WOLFE
It’s hard to believe, but it’s still true…Greater Vision begins their 25th year on December 31, 2014. The adage is old, but accurate… Time really does fly when you’re having fun! It was a very cold Sunday morning…December 30, 1990… when we walked onto the platform at Grassy Creek Christian Church in Grassy Creek, Kentucky, for our very first concert. We had only learned enough songs to get us through a short program, and our only “back up” plan was to “wing it” with songs Mark Trammell and I had performed with the Cathedral Quartet in the mid-1980s, using the piano and bass guitar…hoping Chris Allman had listened to those recordings before meeting us to drive to our first concert. We had no CDs to sell, and no Prevost bus sitting in the parking lot. It was just three guys, who were determined to sing some great music that had the potential to actually change lives. Fast forward to today…twenty-four years later. None of us would have ever dreamed we would still be out here, and we certainly never imagined all the things that have happened between December 30, 1990 and today. We’ve been to more places than we ever dreamed we would go, and we’ve had the privilege of singing for more people than we ever dreamed we would. We’ve seen lives changed by the power of the Gospel, and we’re still encouraged when we hear a sweet testimony at the Product Table. Over the course of twenty-four years, change is unavoidable, but we’ve been blessed to have very few personnel or professional changes…actually only three personnel changes, 40 | FALL 2014
“ON A JOURNEY” CD COVER
and two record labels in 24 years. That’s a rarity, these days. Rodney has been with the group for 21 years, and, if you add Chris’ two tenures together, he’s been Greater Vision’s Tenor for almost 10 years. We’ve been blessed to be a part of several Gospel Music “firsts” over the last twenty-four years. We released Gospel Music’s first Concert DVD in 1996; The first Gospel recording with the Hungarian Radio Symphony in 1998, “Far Beyond This Place”; The first Gospel Music Hawaiian Cruise in 2005, and most recently, Gospel Music’s first BluRay Disc, the “Gospel Music Hymn Sing,” to name a few. So, what’s ahead, as we move toward the completion of our first quarter-century? The truth is…we really don’t know, but we do have some things we would like to accomplish in the years ahead. We have a new CD coming out in March, and we’ve lined up some special concerts and events in the coming months, as a part of our 25th Anniversary Celebration. I’ll admit we’re seriously looking at our scheduling moving forward, and we’re making some adjustments, since the miles don’t come as easily as they used to. We’re not getting old, but we do have “high mileage.” Whatever comes, our main goal is still the same as it was when we loaded up that 1989 Dodge Conversion Van to head to Grassy Creek, Kentucky in December of 1990…To honor The Lord with our lives and our music, and to share the greatest story ever told…The Gospel…with as many people as possible. Just like the title of our first recording said… we’re still “On A Journey.”

CONNECTED OR DISCONNECTED? That is the Question! PHOTO BY: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM
BY: KEN DAVIS
Last night I walked into a fine dining establishment and was shocked by what I saw. Couples, families, groups of friends sitting together at tables yet absorbed in different worlds, each staring into the device of their choice, oblivious to the souls around them. Last week I watched a 13-year-old girl walk into a light post while texting. Today a 6-year-old boy stumbled onto the plane I was riding. His mom held him by one hand as he fumbled trying to play a game on some device he was holding in the other hand. The pilot of the plane greeted the boy. “Good morning son, thank you for riding on my plane.” The boy never looked up or even acknowledged the pilot’s greeting. He ignored a real pilot flying a real plane, perhaps because he was flying his own imaginary pixelated plane. His world didn’t require conversation, or interaction or common manners. How sad. A guest in our home recently brought her “device” with her. This beloved friend spent hours showing us her favorite YouTube videos. Reminded me of my childhood, when people would invite us to their home and show endless hours of home movies until I was begging my parents to shoot me. Imagine someone back then bringing their television to your house and making you watch sitcoms they enjoy, or bringing ten photo albums and making you look at each picture until your fingernails itched. The worst thing about all of this is that I often fall into the same trap. Join me for lunch and I confess that more than once my hands might twitch as if pulled by some unseen spirit toward my iPhone. We are constantly distracted from hearing the voice,
looking into the eyes, touching the hand of a real “in-the-flesh” person as we stumble to respond to the incessant vibration, ding or obnoxious ring tone of a device. Is there anything more important than the real person we are with? Wait… I feel the vibration! Stock prices are up! A Facebook friend just bungee jumped off the church steeple with a “gopro” attached to his ear! One of the Kardashian’s broke a fingernail! An e-mail! A text! Breaking news! How did we live without this insanity? Quite well, thank you. Technology has brought with it wonderful opportunity. When the name of the first movie with Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart slips our mind, how amazing to have the answer at our fingertips. My grandchildren can notify me of their latest accomplishment. Diane can send a love note when I’m miles from home. Yet how tragic if old movies are never discussed because there is no conversation. Or two people in love sit at lunch and never look at each other’s face because they are absorbed in another “face book” all together. What have we lost because of such accessible technology? Intimacy, Relationship, Communication Skills, Common respect, Human life (texting while driving) What have we gained? How do you manage your screen time? Will the next generation know how to build real-time personal relationships? FALL 2014 | 43
true heartfelt
WORSHIP BY: ERIC BENNETT
TD Jakes once said “Anyone can praise The Lord. Any lost person can praise The Lord. Let everyone that has breath Praise The Lord. But, True Worship can only come from someone that God has done a supernatural work in their life.”
1 Peter 2:19,20: But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an Holy nation, a peculiar people; that you should show forth the wonderful acts of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His Marvellous Light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
I agree with Brother Jakes. True heartfelt worship can only come from someone who has experienced the hand of God working in their life; Someone that God has delivered; Someone that God has set free. Joshua 4:19-24 tells the story of where the children of Israel set up twelve stones as a reminder of what God had done in their life. Most all lyrics in Southern Gospel Music reflect on what God has done; either on the cross or something He has done in our personal life. Whether it be Chris Allman’s, “I Could Never Praise Him Enough” or Bill Gaither’s, “Jesus We Just Want to Thank You” (check out the Cathedrals video of this song on youtube), all of these songs are reminding us of the goodness of God. For me personally, I can sit and listen to songs like these and be reminded of all the things God has done for me.
44 | FALL 2014
I am so very thankful for Salvation, my wife, family, my GRANDKIDS, house, job, health, friends, and the list goes on. We all have so much to thank God for. I think music either helps you focus on God or takes your focus off God. The importance of listening to Christian music is that it brings our attention to the One who gave us the breath that we breathe. This is another good reason to thank Him. If we could get our mind off who is singing and get it on WHO is being sung about, we could experience true worship. Some of my best times with The Lord are not at church, concerts, or singings, but when I am driving the bus at 3:00 a.m. or in my truck listening to Christian Music. God shows up and here we go! Music will never take the place of bible study and prayer time with God. But, it can truly keep our minds on Him. Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. The world has so much noise today. Why wouldn’t a follower of Christ want to keep focused on Him all day long? What better way to do that than listening to music that speaks of Him. If you don’t already, I would suggest that you start listening to Christian music either on the radio or by CD. Listen to the lyrics. Be reminded of all the things God has done in your life. Be reminded of “I once was lost but now I’m found, I once was blind but now I see”. If you do, I think you will experience true worship. You will keep focused on Him and your day will be so much brighter.
