Concert Promoter of the year By: Scott Fowler

Landon (age 8) at the keyboard preparing for a performance at church camp

Landon with Scott Fowler & Roger Bennett at Cathedrals Booth in 1998

It was early 1981. I was 14 years old. I was at my home in St Louis listening to a gospel radio station when they announced that caller number 8 would win two tickets to a gospel concert. I immediately ran to the phone and dialed the station. The DJ answered the phone and said, “congratulations….you are caller number 8!” I was SO excited! Three weeks later I attended that concert where I met the members of the group. They were heroes of mine. When the radio DJ introduced me to the quartet they were quite unfriendly and actually rude to me. I was devastated. I remember thinking, “If God ever lets me sing in a quartet, I will NEVER treat people like they just treated me….especially kids!”

I’ll never forget it. It was my first trip to Fremont California where Landon’s family had come year after year to see the Cathedrals perform. I still remember pulling up to that church. I was looking out the bus window and I saw little 9 year-old Landon standing with his brothers and dad in ascending order of height. It was so cute seeing Landon there wringing his hands in excitement and anticipation. He was about to meet his heroes. God gently reminded me of the promise I made years earlier.

I had no idea that a few weeks later, a little blond headed boy would be born some 2100 miles away in Roseburg, Oregon and that little boy would someday come hear me sing with the Cathedrals. That little boy was Landon Beene.

I got off the bus and his dad said, “Hello Scott. I’m Ken and these are my boys Landon, Brandon and Shandon. They just LOVE the Cathedrals.” I tried my best for the next several years to “make over Landon” every time I saw him. Landon developed a deep love for southern gospel music during those impressionable years. When Landon was 17 years old, he and his brothers formed “The Beene Family,”

a southern gospel music trio. Landon was what I called a “flamboyant Roger Bennett protégé.” His enthusiasm and love for the music was infectious. His personality made him friends everywhere he went. His family traveled from 1999-2009. During that time Landon’s entrepreneurial nature began to take root. Soon Landon was involved in other aspects of gospel music like the manufacturing of gospel music CD’s and DVDs. He became the one artists went to for consistant product quality and exceptional customer service. He quickly earned the respect of the entire gospel music industry. In the past 3 years, Landon has become involved in almost every aspect of southern gospel music and today is the founder and president of IMC, (Innovative Management and consulting). IMC is involved in management and development of many gospel music events such as Gospel Music Celebration Cruises, Southwest Gospel

Music Festival in Arizona, Praisefest Branson, Praisefest Niagara, Blue Mountain Gospel Music Festival, Garden Spot Promotions and Virginia Beach Gospel Music Fest. Recently, God granted Landon a desire of his heart by allowing him to produce the first ever “Cathedrals Family Reunion” in Ft. Worth, TX. Landon says, “this is a highlight for me because it allows me to be a part of honoring the memory of the men who made me fall in love with this music.” This past September, Landon was honored by the southern gospel music guild when he was voted “Southern Gospel Music’s

promoter of the year.” Other nominees for promoter of the year were, Ray Flynn of “Abraham Productions”, Bill Gaither, and Bill Bailey. Pretty impressive!

at times, but you were always gracious to me. You and others like you are why I am in gospel music today. You have become a life-long friend…and I love you.”

Through the tears of his emotional acceptance speech, Landon reminisced about how when he was a kid going to southern gospel music concerts, he was inspired by the music and encouraged by how personable and kind the gospel music artists were to him.

Well, “Your welcome Landon! I’m proud of you and I am honored to be your friend. But just for the record…you’re STILL annoying…but I love you too!

Shortly after the ceremony, Landon sent me a note. Here’s what it said. “Hey Fowler, I just want to thank you for investing in me as a little kid. I know I HAD to annoy you

Lastly, my advice to Landon is this: Always take time for kids…their future might just depend on your kindness and influence in their lives.

THe pathways of life By: Phil Collingsworth, Sr.

Collingsworth Family

The pathways of life are quite circuitous, to say the least. Just when you think you might have something figured out, God allows a curveball to come your way, reminding you afresh that you are solely dependent upon Him for guidance and direction through what may appear to be the unending twists and turns in the road ahead. At times, it may even appear easier and more advantageous to go back to comfortable territory, traveled through previously, rather than surge ahead towards unknown paths which could potentially bring unexpected pain and suffering.

Gentle Shepherd, come and lead us, for we need You to help us find our way. Gentle Shepherd, come and feed us, for we need your strength from day to day. There’s no other we can turn to who can help us face another day. Gentle Shepherd, come and lead us, for we need You to help us find our way. God’s ways are so often a mystery. So much of human suffering, unanswered questions, and a yearning for help from The Divine has been captured in an art form which has become a very dear treasure, as it has been

that come to your mind, in the night, when burdens are heavy and daylight seems so very far away, lifting your soul with the warmth of their messages and the eternal hope of their lyrics. After hearing of the heart wrenching trauma & deep grief endured by Horatio Spafford, and then singing his familiar penned words: When peace like a river attendeth my way When sorrows like sea billows roll Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say: It is well, it is well with my soul You start to get a faint grasp of this treasure that God has allowed to be available to us, to help our human emotion to endure and heal through unbelievable circumstances in which the human spirit seems to be completely crushed under the weight of unsustainable grief. So ……… please, please …….. stop and teach these literary treasures to your children on a daily basis. It is a must that the hymns endure to another generation, so that forthcoming generations may also enjoy this blessed point of reference we all know and take for granted.

Collingsworth Family performing at an event

In recent weeks, life’s pathway has found us standing alongside long time friends who are enduring pain beyond description with the sudden, untimely death of their 19 year old son, Patrick. The words of Gloria Gaither quickly flooded our minds when we were asked to provide music for his memorial service:

passed down to forthcoming generations: HYMNS. A professor from Indiana Wesleyan University once remarked to us that more doctrine is taught to the laity of the church through the singing and memorizing of hymns than is ever taught to them through the listening of sermons. It is the words of these treasures of literature

Moving Forward With Greater Vision Greater Vision

By: Gerald Wolfe

Once again, we’ve made it to our favorite season of the year… Fall! If you were to ride on our bus, you would know we enjoy cooler weather. Our daytime travel temperature is always a “Fall-like” 69 degrees, and our “normal” night-time cruising temperature is 63 degrees. Needless to say… we love FALL! Just before this issue of the Gospel Music Quarterly went to press, we learned that our current radio single, “Looking For The Grace,” is the Number One Song on Gospel Music Radio Stations across the USA. It’s from our most recent CD, “For All He’s Done,” and was written by our very own, Rodney Griffin. Our brand-new single, from the same CD, has just been sent to stations. It’s called “Preacher, Tell Me Like It Is.” It’s a song Rodney wrote to encourage pastors and preachers to do what the title says… “tell me like it is.” Your pastor needs to hear this song. It will be a great encouragement to him. If you don’t have the CD yet, you can order “For All He’s Done” from our website, www.greatervisionmusic.com. Speaking of Rodney Griffin, he has just been named Songwriter Of The Year for the fifteenth consecutive year! Congratulations, Rodney! Over the last year or two, we’ve rediscovered audiences all across the country who really love to sing IF they’re familiar with the songs. With that in mind, we’ve just released a 4-CD set called “The Complete Church Hymnal Series.” It’s a collection of 49 songs from the old “red back” hymnal, more commonly known as “The Church Hymnal.” We’ve recorded these four CDs over the last seventeen years, but this is the first time we’ve put the four CDs together in a package. This collection is full of great songs you already know, but probably

Rodney Giffin, Chris Allman, and Gerald Wolfe being interviewed during a recent event

don’t hear in your church very often. You can sing-along with these CDs for hours at a time! “The Complete Church Hymnal Series” set is available from our website, or you can pick it up when you see us in concert. If at all possible, you don’t want to miss the Jubilee Christmas Tour this year, if it comes to a city you can get too! It will be one of the highlights of your Christmas Season… we promise! We’ve recorded a brand-new “Jubilee Christmas – A’ Cappella” CD with the Booth Brothers and Legacy Five, just in time for the tour, and we’ll be premiering some of the songs when you see us! We’ve also recorded a “Jubilee Christmas” TV Special for RFD-TV, which will air in late-

9

November or early-December. Make sure you’re on our email list, and we’ll let you know the exact date and time. From October thru December, we’ll do forty-four concerts in seventeen states, from Pennsylvania to California, and almost everywhere in between! Be sure to check out the concert schedule for your state, in the back of the Gospel Music Quarterly, to see if we’re going to be near you!

In The Studio With The Cathedrals Family Reunion By: Gerald Wolfe

Greater Vision, Legacy Five, Mark Trammell Quartet and Signature Sound gather together to capture a unique blend of voices

It was a unique experience. Five men who shared a common musical history, but who had never worked together on a recording project. It was the first day of vocal sessions for the Cathedrals Family Reunion recording. To say there was a little apprehension and nervousness in the atmosphere, would be an understatement. After all, these men were taking on the task of recording the first new “Cathedrals” CD, since the group’s retirement in 1999. Everyone in the room knew it wouldn’t be The Cathedrals that everybody remembered and loved, and that it wouldn’t really be The Cathedrals without Glen Payne and George Younce. So then, the task was to create a recording that people who loved the Cathedrals could love, and one that Glen and George would put their stamp of approval on, if they could hear it. A monumental task, to say the least. The first challenge was to choose songs that were both familiar to fans, and special to the guys who would be singing them. When one considers the large number of songs that had become the favorites of millions of people during a quartet’s career that spanned nearly four decades, it’s an obviously mind-numbing challenge. The second challenge was to make sure the new recordings remained faithful to the original, while bringing them into the 21st Century, musically. Everyone agreed there

could be nothing worse than recording a “classic Cathedrals” song, then destroying it with a track or arrangement that made it unfamiliar. The final challenge was to find at least one new song the Cathedrals would have recorded, if it had been written during their career, and make it sound like “their song.” With the final songs selected, and the sound-tracks finished, Scott Fowler, Danny Funderburk, Ernie Haase, Mark Trammel, and Gerald Wolfe, came into the studio’s Control Room to begin the first session. With Producer, Wayne Haun and Executive Producer, Landon Beene, in the room, everyone wondered if it would “click.” The five guys picked up their lyric sheets to run-through the first song and there they were those familiar voices, together for the first time. Five unique personalities, with different preferences, but with one powerful and uniting motive to honor the memory and “magic” of Gospel Music’s most-loved quartet. The second day of sessions brought together the members of Greater Vision, Legacy Five, Mark Trammell Quartet, and Signature Sound, to capture the unique blend of fifteen voices that had never been recorded together before. It was easy for everyone to acknowledge it was very possible that not a single one of those voices would have

10

Scott Fowler, Danny Funderburk, Ernie Haase, Mark Trammell, and Gerald Wolfe recording in the studio

ever been heard by large numbers of people, if George and Glen hadn’t provided the opportunity and the platform for them. To help everyone to focus, Wayne Haun asked the Engineer to play something he had put together for the recording. The familiar song, “Search Me, O God,” began to play. It was a beautiful arrangement Wayne had written for the project. However, what was coming up in the middle of the song caught everyone by surprise. As the turn-around for the second verse began, the track recorded by the studio musicians began to fade, and the familiar rhythm and “piano fills” of Roger Bennett began to fill the room. No one said a word, as Roger’s turn-around was followed by the two voices that had been missing from the sessions… it was Glen and George. Wayne had somehow managed to combine the new track with a track from one of the Cathedrals last live recordings! With Roger at the piano, and George and Glen behind the microphones, everyone in the room stood silently, many with tears streaming down their faces, as the men we loved so much blessed us once again. It was almost as if they had showed up, just in time, to show us once again, how it’s supposed to be done. For more information regarding the Cathedrals Family Reunion, visit www. CathedralsFamilyReunion.com.

No one was sure when it would really happen, but The Cathedrals are finally having a “Family Reunion!” After all these years, alumni members of the group -- Ernie Haase, Danny Funderburk, Gerald Wolfe, Mark Trammell, and Scott Fowler -- are recreating their glory days of recording with The Cathedrals at the height of their popularity. This brand new studio CD “Cathedrals Family Reunion” includes favorite songs of the Cathedrals, and features those five alumni and the well-loved groups that have carried on the legacy George Younce and Glen Payne started: Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, Greater Vision, Legacy Five, and the Mark Trammell Quartet. Fans of The Cathedrals will be easy to please during this giftgiving season, because the Family Reunion even has the blessing of the children of George Younce and Glen Payne. In fact, thanks to the marvels of modern technology, the unforgettable voices of George, Glen, and Roger Bennett are seamlessly woven into irreplaceable renditions of 12 songs that made The Cathedrals so memorable. As an added bonus, an original song, “We’ll Work,” is being recorded and exclusively released to radio!

devotion in song By: Chris Allman

How many nights have been consumed by sleeplessness? How many days have been fruitless because of worry? Your son, daughter, grandchild, mate or some other very special person has chosen to take a detour on the broad path and this reckless choice is not only destroying his or her life but is adversely effecting the quality of life you used to enjoy. The despair you are experiencing has slowly but surely put a kink in your spiritual hose. The overwhelming joy that once freely flowed because of your personal relationship with The Lord has now been reduced to a feeble, I.V. like, life sustaining drip.

Chris Allman

validate what I’m trying to tell you. The truth is, fear and faith are like oil and water. The two do not mix! I’m sure you can testify of hours on your knees seeking God for your lost loved one but if you leave your knees to only spend the night tossing and turning, well, do you see where I’m headed with this? That night of restlessness absolutely negates the hours you’ve spent pleading with God over the prodigal. Do you see what James, the half brother of Jesus, is trying to say to us? To personalize it, I believe James would say to you, “As a child of the one true all powerful creator

gone far enough. There’s still room for you to come and stay with us.” I’m sure you can relate with the heart of this father. Now on to the part of the song where I believe you can be best encouraged to believe for a homecoming. Although the son hasn’t arrived from his rebellious and riotous living, the father displays a faith by preparing for his return. He gives certain direction by saying, “Kill the fatted calf. Grab the finest robe. Get a ring for my child because he’s coming home. Get his room prepared because I know he’s tired and when he gets here I’m

But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting: for he that doubteth is like the surge of the sea driven by the wind and tossed. – James 1:6 I have a question for you. Do you believe a full night’s rest would represent a lack of concern for that wandering soul? Does the very idea of a wonderful day, free from gut wrenching concern, pummel you with guilt? If your answer to those questions is yes, you need to recognize that a sacrifice of abundant life in no way, shape or form beckons the prodigal from the pigpen. As a matter of fact, your attitude toward this unfortunate event is, no doubt, counterproductive. Yes, it’s true! Staring at the ceiling all nightlong is harming that one who is out in the cold. Let me see if I can clarify and

of all that is, you have His full attention to ask whatever you feel led to ask but do so believing that He is more than able to accomplish that for which you petition Him.” To ask then worry is to tell God that you aren’t fully convinced of His capability to take care of the issue at hand. Now, is that attitude really what you believe can help that one you are concerned for? In a song the Lord gave me some years ago, a hurting father asks his wandering son, “Are you tired? Are you worn? Is that road longer than you thought it was before?” The loving father then goes on to beckon the child back home… “Turn around. You’ve

12

sure he’ll want to rest a while.” Now for the kicker, “And if you need me, I’ll be out in the road. Because another child’s coming home!” Do you believe God can return that child of rebellion safely back to your doorstop or not? If you do, stop carrying the burden and start planning a party. If faith can move a mountain it can surely move a loved one.

life is not a dress rehearsal Legacy Five

By: Scott Fowler

As I write this, I am sitting on the bus in Baxter, Minnesota. I have been looking at Legacy Five’s busy fall schedule trying to make sure I know where all I am supposed to be and when I am supposed to be there! The last three months of this year are very busy. In October, we will be doing more Jubilee recording with the Booth Brothers and Greater Vision. Plus, we are working on our own new recording with legendary producer, Lari Goss. We also have some great concerts this month like our annual Mackinac Island retreat on Mackinac Island, Michigan. This place is one of the best-kept secrets in all of America in my opinion. This year, my father-in-law, Ken Davis will be joining us. The photo on the right is from a few years ago, but it shows me walking the porch of the Grand Hotel, the site for the Mackinac Island retreat. The dates are October 20 and 21. Come join us! November will have us in Fort Worth, Texas for the Cathedrals Family Reunion concert. I cannot wait for this extraordinary two-day event. We have some GREAT surprises in store for you there! Then, starting the day after Thanksgiving, the Jubilee Christmas Tour gets into full swing with 15 concerts in 16 days! If you have not seen a Jubilee Christmas concert, you MUST experience it. It’s a HOOT! Then we will conclude our year with our annual New Year’s Eve Celebration from December 31-January 2 at Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. Join Legacy Five, Greater Vision, Booth Brothers, Triumphant Quartet, the Voices of Lee, Wes Hampton of the Gaither Vocal Band, Larnell Harris, Southern Raised, Ken Davis, Tim Lovelace and others as we say good-bye to 2013 and hello to 2014!

Preston holding his Bible

“I want to be like you, daddy.” Last night, I was perusing through the pictures on my computer and I came across this one of Preston. I remember this particular day well. I was sitting out by our pool reading my Bible and watching Preston and Bailey swim. Preston gets out of the pool, goes in the house and returns with his Bible. He sat down in a chair next to me and began thumbing thru it reading the words he could. I asked him what he was doing to which he replied, “I want to be like you, daddy.” Wow! I was reminded again of the the awesome responsibility I have to influence Preston and Bailey for the cause of Christ. I felt honored, proud, and even a

15

bit of fear, realizing the heavy seriousness of the fact that my kids are watching me, mimicking me, and depending on me to show them the way. May we all realize that we are having an effect on someone, somewhere, whether we know it or not. Whether we accept it or not…whether we act on it or not. As I often say, “life is not a dress rehearsal.” This is it. We have but one chance to make a difference in the lives of people we come into contact with. Let’s all renew our commitment to influence people, especially our families in a positive way. Nothing else is more important!

The Jubilee Christmas Tour Kicks-Off A New Season!

Booth Brothers, Greater Vision, & Legacy Five

By: IMC Staff

The most talked about Christmas program in Gospel Music is getting ready to kickoff it’s second season on Thanksgiving weekend! The Jubilee Christmas Tour has more than doubled their number of concerts for 2013, with sixteen concerts in eleven states, including Tennessee, Oklahoma, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, California, Missouri, Indiana, and Michigan and Kentucky! The Jubilee Christmas program is not a typical concert. It’s a unique two-hour experience featuring three of Gospel Music’s most popular Artists, the Booth Brothers, Greater Vision, and Legacy Five, on stage together for the entire evening! Jubilee Christmas is more than the eleven men on the platform. The Tour is supported by a complete Production Crew, for lighting, sound, and multi-media elements. The goal is to convey the joy, memories, and true meaning of the “most wonderful time of the year!” This year, more new material and variety is being added to the program, as well. The Jubilee Gang has recently completed a new

recording with Grammy-award-winning Producer, Lari Goss, which features six, unique A’ Cappella Christmas arrangements. Some of these arrangements will be included in this year’s production, making the two-hour program better than ever. Don’t worry… all the favorite parts of the program you’ve experienced or heard about, will still be included! The now-famous “saxophone solo,” “Almost-Elvis,” and “red-neck snow machine” are just a few of the “show-stoppers” people are still talking about, that will still be a part of this year’s program! The nation-wide promotion for the 2013 Jubilee Christmas Tour has started, and many venues are already nearing sell-outs! The new “On The Road With The Jubilee Tour” DVD was released at the recent National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, generating even more interest in this year’s Tour. It’s a behind-the-scenes look into what it takes to make The Jubilee Tour happen, along with all the laughs that happen before and after the concerts. It’s a “must-have” for people who love to laugh along with the guys who make up the

jubilee

on the road

16

“Jubilee Gang.” The DVD, along with the new “Jubilee Christmas – A’ Cappella” CD, will be available at the Jubilee Christmas Tour concerts. Generating even more anticipation for the 2013 Jubilee Christmas Tour, the Jubilee Gang has just recorded their first-ever “Jubilee Christmas Special” TV Show for the RFD-TV Network! The show will air during the “Music City Show” time slot, sometime in late November or early December. The “Music City Show” airs weekly, beginning November 14th on RFDTV. Check your local listings for the time and channel in your area. RFD-TV is also available on DirecTV and Dish satellite systems. Tickets are on sale now for the 2013 Jubilee Christmas Tour! Special seating packages are available for church groups. For more information about this year’s Tour Schedule, visit www.imcconcerts.com/jubilee. Be sure to “like” the Jubilee Gang’s Facebook Page, and follow them on Twitter, for “realtime” updates.

Mark Trammell Quartet

new territories By: Mark Trammell

After eleven years of full time ministry, there are few places that the Mark Trammell Quartet has not been. Each season they sing in a variety of locations and settings, yet, every year they find somewhere new to go. In the next few months you will find MTQ appearing at some familiar places as well as some new destinations! From caves nestled in the Missouri hills to the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, from the deep south to the far north and even sailing across the Atlantic ocean, the Mark Trammell Quartet is bound to be in an area near you! October 22 & 23, 2013 Dollywood, Sevierville, TN Another Fall attraction that draws fans from all over the nation is Dollywood’s National Southern Gospel & Harvest Celebration in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, the festival runs from October 2nd to November 2nd. This year you will find the Mark Trammell Quartet in concert on October 22nd and 23rd. You can find specific information on their schedule at www. dollywood.com. November 5, 2013 Smoky Mtns. Praisefest, Sevierville, TN For over twenty years, Greater Vision has been hosting the Great Smoky Mountains Praisefest. Held at New Hope Church in Sevierville, TN, this event brings an excellent lineup of artists. The Mark Trammell Quartet will be appearing on Tuesday, November 5th. Come on out and join us as we take in the beauty of the Great Smokies and gather together to sing of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

November 8 & 9, 2013 Cathedral Family Reunion, Fort Worth, TX In 1980, Mark Trammell joined the prestigious Cathedral Quartet and remained a main stay in that group for ten years. This Fall, the original members of the Cathedrals (Mark, Gerald, Scott, Danny and Ernie) are coming together for two unforgettable days in Fort Worth, Texas to celebrate the Cathedrals Family Reunion! Never before have these five members been on stage together in an event like this – you don’t want to miss it! In addition to the morning and evening sessions, fans can step inside and tour the last bus the Cathedrals traveled on, hear fun road stories from the Cathedral days in the sessions and enjoy your favorite classic songs brought back to life! November 16, 2013 Northward Ho!, Bismarck, ND Shortly after MTQ sings in the heart of Texas they will tread into new territory in the far north as they head to Bismarck, North Dakota. This will be the Mark Trammell Quartet’s first time to appear in that area and they are excited about bringing their music to Bismarck and making new friends! The concert will be held at the Century Baptist Church at 3 PM on Saturday afternoon.

February 3 - 8, 2014 Singing at Sea, Caribbean Cruise At last, MTQ will join a variety of fellow SGM artists on the Singing at Sea cruise in February of 2014! This is the largest cruise in Southern Gospel Music and has been for the last 40 years. Set sail for southern ports as we depart Jacksonville, FL on the third of February. This all Christian Cruise boasts endless feasts to spoil your palate and concert experiences you’ve come to love as you cruise with the best and brightest in gospel music. This is always a special time of relaxation and fun. Leave the winter weather behind and sail with the Mark Trammell Quartet to the sunny shores of the Caribbean! In addition to these great events, MTQ has been hard at work in the studio recording a new project! You can be looking for this new recording to appear on tour and at your local Christian bookstores in February of 2014. Mark, Nick, Pat and Dustin look forward to sharing their new music with you soon!

This time of year Tim Lovelace

By: Tim Lovelace

Just yesterday my oldest daughter, Gabrielle, asked me what is my favorite season of the year. I told her that I have always loved the four distinct seasons, and that is one of the many reasons why I love living where we do. However, if I had to choose one season, I would choose fall. I love this time of year when people in the city start putting scarecrows in their yards, with no garden in sight. People with pristine yards start placing pumpkins and bales of hay around their home. I love how neat freaks start decorating their homes inside with leaves and pinecones...the effects of fall. I fondly recall going to see my grandmother in the cool fall weather. I got out of the car and watched as the smoke slowly rose above her little house and then thought, “Hey, wait a minute!! My grandmother doesn’t have a fireplace!” The smoke was from one of her candles that got too close to a pinecone... third time that year! The last quarter of the year also welcomes the wonderful season of Christmas and all of its beautiful snow. As a child in south Alabama, sledding was difficult on

Christmas day, mainly for three reasons – no sled, no hills, and no snow! Other than that, it was a huge success!

Opryland Hotel in Nashville. Scott Fowler and the guys have an outstanding line-up of talent for this event!

Now that we live in the mountains, sledding is one of my girls’ favorite winter sports. I don’t mean to brag, but I can do everything on a sled that I did in my twenties. I can sled all day long and fly down the hills backwards while performing many childish stunts. The only difference now is that I can’t get out of bed the next morning! I love this time of year!

With all of my bouncing around, I still may not be close to your hometown, so here is another way to catch up with me, along with some of the greatest artists in gospel music. There is a new television program coming your way. It is called The Music City Show, and it is being produced by Scott Godsey of Godsey and Associates. We have already filmed four shows and will be filming several more in October with such groups as Greater Vision, Blackwoods, Legacy Five, Brian Free and Assurance, Booth Brothers, and the list goes on! This is a show you will want to make sure you watch!!! The show debuts on November 7th at 8:00 p.m. on the RFD network and on November 10th at 8:00 p.m. on FamilyNet, so spread the news.

During this quarter, I will be all over this great nation of ours, so please come out to a comedy concert, and let’s all laugh together. You will find me in Michigan and Pennsylvania and southern states like FL, GA, AL, TN and MS. I’ll be doing a pre-Thanksgiving concert in Conroe, Texas. November will also find me at a three day event for the Pacific Gospel Music Association in Oregon. In December, I’ll be hopping all over the place, including a few dates in California. On New Years Eve, I will be found with the talented Perrys in Paducah, KY, and the first day of January, I will be celebrating the New Year in concert with my friends Legacy Five at the

introducing penny loafers

Penny Loafers

By: Larry Nichols

The Loafers primarily sing gospel music, yet still maintain a small repertoire of what they call their “lighter” stuff. “We do a rap song called the “Mayberry Rap,” explains the group’s tenor, Michael Hunt, “in which we imitate the characters of the Andy Griffith Show. I know it sounds crazy, but if you can get people laughing it helps them connect with you and makes it a lot easier to then sing and talk to them about spiritual matters.”

Michael Hunt (1st tenor), Larry Nichols (baritone), Alan Pike (bass), and Kevin Slemp (2nd tenor)

In 1985, on the campus of Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, four young men sang an a cappella version of “Happy Trails” for a talent show and were stunned to find that people wanted to hear them sing again. The quartet soon decided that they wanted to have a name that sounded like a group from the 1950’s, as many of their songs reflected that era’s “doo-wop” style. During a rehearsal, they looked down and saw that they were all wearing penny loafers. “That’s it! We’ll call ourselves the “Penny Loafers.” The group continued to build a repertoire of family-friendly, secular songs set to creative a cappella arrangements. Members came and went, but by 1989 all four “Loafers” were Christians who wanted to not just make people smile with their

music, but also desired to bring glory to God and draw people to Jesus. Thus, the music ministry of the Penny Loafers was born. Bass singer Alan Pike reflects, “We thought very seriously about changing our name to something that sounded more ‘Christian.’ But we couldn’t come up with a name we all liked, so we just stuck with the ‘Penny Loafers.’ As it turned out, that was the best thing we could have done because we wound up getting invited to sing for all sorts of audiences that probably wouldn’t have invited a ‘Christian’ group. We did sing for churches, but we also sang for public schools, universities, corporate banquets, and civic events. We would sing a Beach Boys or Billy Joel tune, and then launch into a praise song to Jesus!”

22

Lead singer Kevin Slemp adds, “I think of how, in 1 Corinthians 9:22, the Apostle Paul said that he ‘became all things to all men so that by all possible means he might save some.’ When Paul spoke to the people of Athens in Acts 17, he quoted from some of their own pagan philosophers and then shifted to talking about the resurrection of Jesus. I think that’s a good lesson for us Christians today. Are we willing to do whatever it takes to effectively communicate the gospel?” Larry Nichols, the group’s baritone, offers, “I think we also try to gain a hearing for the gospel by doing our best to maintain musical excellence. Our bass, Alan, is an amazing arranger. His musical style draws from Southern Gospel, jazz, contemporary, and even barbershop and produces a sound that is distinct and something audiences really enjoy.” IMC will be introducing the “Penny Loafers” to the audiences at the Southwest Gospel Music Fest in Phoenix, AZ, Branson Praisefest in MO, Praisefest Niagara Falls, and also at the Virginia Beach Gospel Music Fest. a new classic gospel music tv show By: Scott Godsey

Coming this fall, it’s The Music City Show, featuring top artists like Greater Vision, Legacy Five, The Blackwood Brothers, Comedian Tim Lovelace and Aaron Wilburn. The show features special guest hosts each week with Nashville’s own Blue Jean Band and The Positive Cowboy Jim Sheldon. The Music City Show is a series based in Nashville, Tn – America’s favorite Music City. The show has many elements of Nashville that people love, namely a live band, talented artists and comedic entertainment. It is likened unto The Tonight Show, with comedy segments, a guest host, and a beautiful cityscape backdrop. “I’m excited for fans to see their favorite artists sing with a live band and get to know the featured artist in a more personal way through the interview segments.” said Producer Scott Godsey. Fans can see their musical heroes perform and learn more about them in the interview portion of the show. The Blackwood Brothers tell about the tragic plane crash that almost ended their musical legacy and also about turning away Elvis from entering their band. Tim Lovelace cracks a joke about drinking Red Bull on a Greyhound. The studio audience bursts into laughter as Aaron Wilburn sings, “If My Nose Was Running Money Honey, I’d Blow it All On You.” Also featured, is a Barn Segment where The Positive Cowboy Jim Sheldon sings Classic Country Hymns each week. He is known as The Positive Cowboy, because of the positive message he carries in the songs that he sings. The Barn Segment is also time

for “Letters from Near and Far”, a hilarious question and answer segment. Duncan Ragsdale, designed the country barn set with hay bales, an old timey mail box, and a party-line style antique phone. Duncan is an art director from Memphis who has worked with Taylor Swift, Martina McBride and Trace Adkins – among other well respected and widely renowned country artists. Music and Comedy enthusiasts can expect a new classic delivered straight to their televisions this fall. The show airs Thursday nights starting November 7 at 8:00 p.m. EST on RFD TV. Producer, Scott Godsey answers your questions below about The Music City Show: Q: What was it like on the set? A: It was awesome to see artists like Greater Vision, Tim Lovelace, Scott Fowler and Aaron Wilburn working so hard to make

24

Gerald Wolfe (Greater Vision) getting ready to perform on set

everything perfect. Without ever saying let’s give it 100% we all new that we came to raise the bar. They all gave 110% on every show. Q: Did you face any challenges during the film day? A: Challenges? Everything went according to plan... NOT really, we had one act cancel do to sickness one day before the shoot and we had to get another artist, the band had to learn new material and we had to rewrite a show in one day... In production, things always change and it’s how we deal with those changes on the fly that make us stronger. Q: Were there any funny unscripted moments that caught you by surprise, but made the final cut? A: Between Tim Lovelace and Aaron Wilburn, I’m not sure we needed a script. These guys just say what’s on their mind... and it is perfect every time.

www.themusiccityshow.com

Q: What kind of acts perform on The Music City Show? A: We primarily have Southern Gospel artists on the show but we like having some variety with bluegrass and positive country artists. Q: How do you go about the selection process? A: Our selection process is based on what we feel people want to watch on a traditional Music Show. We take their feedback seriously. Q: Talk about The Blue Jean Band, who are they? A: The Blue Jean Band is our house band. For all the artists that come on the show that do not have a band that tours with them – we have our Blue Jean Band play instead of performance tracks. Players include Ricky Free, Mark Fain, Bruce Watkins, and Dirk Johnson with occasional appearances from Sonny Garish and Scott Sanders. Q: What is the purpose of the show? A: The purpose of the Music City Show is to reach people with uplifting music and share real stories that can encourage our viewers. We treat every aspect of this show as if we were taping the Grammys. We believe that the quality of production matched with the best artists not only will reunite the southern gospel fans but also build a community of followers that are not familiar with this style of music.

Q: What kind of things will be available in the online store? A: There is an online store featuring some one of kind merchandise along with many southern gospel CDs and DVDs. Q: How many episodes will be in the first season? A: There are thirteen episodes in the first season featuring The Booth Brothers, Greater Vision, Legacy Five, Tim Lovelace, Kevin Williams, Gene McDonald, Jim Sheldon, Aaron Wilburn and more... Season two production will start in early spring. Q: What is your vision for The Music City Show? A: My Vision is to use the Music City show to grow the reach of the music that I love. There is very little SG programming on TV and we feel with the networks we are on we are going beyond the walls of the church and hope to find many people who will experience Southern Gospel for the first time via the Music City show.

Q: Where can we see The Music City Show? And when? A: The Music City Show airs on RFDTV Thursday at 8:00 p.m. EST and FamilyNet at 5:30 p.m. EST Saturday evenings.

The Formula for the music city show looks like this: REAL ARTISTS + GREAT SONGS + MEANINGFUL STORIES + HIGH QUALITY PRODUCTION + FRESH WEEKLY SHOWS + ALL LIVE MUSIC + NETWORKS THAT REACH A COMBINED 100,000,000 Homes in American = fans. I am a fan of this music, and I would watch this show, and set my DVR when I couldn’t be home to watch it live. We believe there will many others that feel the same. We could not do this without the support of the TOP artists appearing on the show and believing in our vision. This show requires over 50 people on staff for our production days and it takes all of us working towards common goal to make the Music City Show. Check out www.themusiccityshow.com for more information.

My life was changed by a baby boy Ernie Haase

By: Ernie Haase

Ernie and his dad (Pop) wrestling (1968)

Christmas is all about Christ and children. It is about love and giving. It is about making memories and putting them in your heart to treasure forever. Recently, my Dad (Ray Haase) and I sat down and chatted man-to-man. It’s never been hard to chat about work, sports, the Bible or politics, but this chat was different; it was special. Alone together I shared from my heart about how much he meant to me. I reflected on his work ethic and the sacrifices he made for the whole family. I told Him I was about to record a Christmas video and that if he wanted me to sing a favorite song, I’d be happy to do that for him and for mom. Pop is a tough man. He still gets up at 4 a.m., hits the gym and then is the first to work. So, for him to be “soft” took me by surprise. He said, “Sing My Life Was Changed By A Baby Boy. I love that song.”

Ernie and his parents at a recent event

He looked down and paused a bit then looked at me with a tear in his eye and said, “You know, my life was changed by a baby boy. You, Ernie.” He went on to tell me a story that I had never heard. He said, “I was a young and wild 18-year-old kid the day you were born. When I walked into that room and saw you for the first time, you looked right at me and smiled Ernie. I knew then and there I had to grow up. I told your momma that I was going to stop the things I was doing and start going to church and be a Dad to you. So, Ernie, I did give my life to Jesus, but my life was literally changed by a baby boy…YOU!” One of the greatest father-and-son moments EVER! No baseball game or church function could ever replace the holiness of that moment. Later that month, as we recorded the video, I thought back to that time when Pop and I shared our hearts.

29

He and mom were there on the front row wiping tears all night long. I’m a blessed son. This Christmas season, and all year long, take time to be with the ones who matter most. Share your heart. Show your bruises and share your story. Let people close to you know that they matter. Christmas is about sharing. Thank God for the gift of life that is ours in Jesus. I think the Father in heaven smiles when His children get along in fellowship and love. And that special day, when I heard my earthly father tell me his life was changed by a baby boy, I can’t help but believe my Heavenly Father smiled and said, “Now that’s what it’s all about.”

Great Western Fan Festival

Dean Hopper

By: Mike Hopper

As one promoter stated, “We cherish our festival-goers. Some of the performing artists come from the East, so Fan Fest gives them a special time to connect with the folks and groups from the West!” The intimate setting of GREAT WESTERN FAN FESTIVAL offers both time and accommodations for a variety of specialty showcases: “Best of the West”, “Songs and Hymns You Love”, “They Write the Songs”, “Funniest Stories Ever Told”, “Parade of Pianos”, and “Person to Person” – a new Q & A feature with some of these top artists. In addition, FAN FEST has derived a new way of showing their fan and friend appreciation by offering the attendees the “VIP Breakfast Club” and a relaxed “Courtyard Concert” while supper is being served!

Great Western Fan Festival at the Convention Center

In the early 1900’s, church hymns combined with the influencing styles of Spirituals and Bluegrass to create a new genre of music that would eventually become known as today’s Southern Gospel Music. Over the past century, this unique sound has blossomed into a multi-dimensional music style. From its rich orchestral ballads to its handclapping tunes, Southern Gospel Music has become a life-changing experience. The City of Visalia, CA will once again roll out its red carpet for the biggest Southern Gospel music event west of the Rockies. This gathering called the GREAT WESTERN FAN FESTIVAL, will make its home at the downtown Convention Center May 1-3, 2014.

Previously, folks from all across the United States and Canada have made their way to the quaint village of Visalia, to experience its friendly shops and surrounding scenery; now they come for The FAN FESTIVAL, as well. For three special days, the Convention Center will come alive with music and talent that is bound to impress! Fans can look forward to hearing the best-of-the-best in Gospel Music: Triumphant Quartet, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, Greater Vision, Liberty, the Hoppers, the Martins, Legacy Five, the Browns and Tim Lovelace. These artists have been honored with multiple Dove, Grammy and Fan Award accolades, as well as Hall of Fame inductions from both the Christian and Country Music fields.

32

From the “Manna in the Morning” devotionals, through each exciting, musicfilled concert, the GREAT WESTERN FAN FEST is certain to be a soul-inspiring experience. We hope that you, along with thousands of others will make plans to enjoy, with us, a long weekend in the charming town of Visalia, CA while listening to some of the world’s greatest Gospel Music!

to be with us and celebrate our anniversary. It was a great time to introduce our sweet families to everyone, and show off those precious grand babies.

TRIUMPHANT’S CELEBRATION 2013 was a huge success. By success we mean; we felt that God used us to make a difference in the lives of those that attended.

David Pendleton from Fishers IN was our guest ventriloquist. He had everyone in stitches. He was a pleasure to work with.

God used those that attended to impact our lives in a great way. God has blessed us with many great friends from all over. We were honored that so many people gave their time

To end the event we were surprised by the Mayor of Pigeon Forge, TN Mr. David Wear, presenting us with a proclamation that October 1, 2013 is Triumphant Day in Pigeon Forge. What an honor. We are blessed.

We were honored to have Louise Mandrell stop by for a visit. She is partly responsible for the group formation in 2002. It is always a pleasure to see her and to sing with her.

Expectation or Expectancy? By: Ken Davis

Ken with his grandchildren

Funny how a few letters in a word can change the meaning of the word and subsequently one’s outlook on life. Just before this issue of the Gospel Music My friend, Gloria Gaither said, “How we experience Christmas, depends greatly on whether we approach it with a spirit of expectation or a spirit of expectancy!” Most of us approach the holiday season with high expectations. We play it like a video clip in our mind. “Won’t it be wonderful to have the entire family together! It will be such a peaceful time of love and laughter.”

Ken Davis

It doesn’t always pan out that way does it? Old wounds are uncovered, difficult personalities are encountered and turkeys are burned to a crisp, sometimes in the oven and sometimes in the living room. Expectant people somehow feel like they deserve a certain outcome so they expect it. I fall into that group by the way. Often our expectations are dashed and we end up feeling disappointed and blue. Conversely, people who live with expectancy are fully prepared for whatever might come and look for the blessing that God might bring from any situation. If people with expectations are often disappointed, people who live with expectancy are often surprised with joy.

Suddenly our focus changes…… from what we want to what He wants, from what we can get, to what we can give, from what we have planned to what He has planned for us. O Lord help me look into your face this season with a spirit of expectancy.

High expectations are only valid when we look to God to provide in the midst of the real stuff of life. Rather than looking to the circumstances of life to fulfill our wants and needs.
