BEHIND THE SCENES A Letter from the President
Spring is in the air! This might be my favorite time of the year for several reasons. Usually at this time I am finally slowing down from my heavy travel season that starts in the late fall with a short break at Christmas. I love to come home and see the green grass, blooming flowers and budding trees, and I love to grill out on my deck overlooking the lake! More than all of that, it means that I can spend time with my precious children outside playing! In the previous issue of GMQ, I spoke about everything that was happening last quarter with IMC. Today, I am writing this while sitting at my desk in our new office! We moved in over a month ago; however, I have been on the road since that time. We are so thankful for all of the support of the concerts and events from our patrons. Your continued unwavering support has enabled us to expand and grow into this new facility that was so needed. We are currently planning the future of the “Cathedrals Family Reunion” (CFR) and about to announce our plans for 2014 and 2015. We will be adding approximately eight more “Cathedrals Family Reunion” events that will run through 2016. We feel that there is no better place to kick off these plans than Akron, OH. Recently the CFR family met in Akron to discuss the plans for the future. It was a celebration together as we started our visit at Ernie and Lisa’s house on the first night, visited the old home place of George Younce, the Cathedral of Tomorrow Church where the Cathedrals were birthed, toured the theatre that will play host to CFR event on November 7-8, 2015, and finished our day at the graveside of the late George Younce to pay our respects to this great mentor and co-founder of the Cathedrals. As I write this, I ask for your prayers as I take some much needed time off to be home through the spring and summer months. I look forward to seeing many of you in Niagara Falls in May for the Praisefest event as well as the first chartered cruise to Alaska for the Gospel Music Celebration in our new partnership with In Touch Ministries and Dr. Charles Stanley! IT’S NOT JUST A FESTIVAL BY: VERONICA BURNISTON
When one hears Phoenix, Arizona, thoughts instantly turn to horizons of desert sand spotted with cacti, vague imaginings of some major city nestled in the west, and the hot wind rushing in through open car windows and whipping one’s face and arms like a giant blow dryer. Soon, however, Phoenix will draw out another response, a response less focused on the dry Arizona heat and more on the music of gospel artists worshiping the Lord at the annual Southwest Gospel Music Festival (SWGMF). With a population of about 5.5 million people within the city and from the surrounding area, not to mention over 300,000 “winter visitors” arriving in late September each year, Phoenix provides a “massive market for southern gospel” music. So when and how did the Southwest Gospel Music Festival first come about in Phoenix? It all goes back to one Gospel music fan who saw an open door in Arizona and decided to take it. A MAN & A DREAM In 2006 Jack Allen moved to Arizona, where he was immediately impressed with the number of Gospel Music artists who traveled and performed through the area every winter. As he began studying his “geographical surroundings,” he learned that about 300,000
people visit Arizona in the winter months, including at least 100,000 from Canada alone. According to Allen, “most of [these visitors] were raised on gospel music.” Instantly, he saw a wonderful opportunity to gather multiple artists into one huge festival in Phoenix. After all, the city was a “massive market that hadn’t been tapped” yet. In spring of 2008, while attending the Great Western Fan Festival in Fresno, CA (now located in Visalia), Allen approached Claude Hopper of the Hoppers, a long time friend of Allen’s, with a prospectus he’d put together from all the research he’d done in Phoenix. This prospectus explained why Phoenix was an excellent location for a gospel music festival.

For three years, nothing happened. Allen had almost lost hope in the project altogether when Dean Hopper, Claude’s son, approached him at a Hoppers concert in Mesa, AZ, asking about the prospectus Allen had given Dean’s father. Unbeknown to Allen, Dean Hopper and Landon Beene, the president of Innovative Management & Consulting (IMC), had recently taken into consideration starting a festival in the Southwest. After speaking with Allen, Dean and Landon explored Phoenix, searching for a suitable venue for a gospel festival. Their search came up empty. “Landon called and gave me the bad news,” Allen recalled, “but it takes more than a little bad news to kill an idea.” Once again, Allen leapt into action. He started hunting for a venue, looking into every possibility. Then, one day, he found it. Grand Canyon University (GCU), a Christian University located
in Phoenix, was working on an event center that would seat 5,000 people. The building would be dedicated in October 2011. So after more research of his own, Allen set up an appointment to speak with Cathy Moses, GCU’s Vice President of Event Marketing. Moses gave Allen’s idea an “outstanding reception.” Things were beginning to fall into place. After hearing about Allen’s discovery, Landon later flew to Arizona to see the event center for himself, touring the facility in its early stages when it was only concrete and steel. A year later, when GCU’s event center finally opened, Allen toured the facility with Dean and Michael Hopper, eventually followed by Royce Mitchell and Liberty Quartet, who had a rather large following with the winter visitors. All the searching had paid off, they’d finally found their venue.

THE FESTIVAL TODAY Today the Southwest Gospel Music Festival has grown into one of the “most successful gospel music festivals on the west coast.” Including performances by artists like The Booth Brothers, Ernie Haase + Signature Sound, The Hoppers, Liberty Quartet, and even more outstanding groups, it’s no wonder this year’s festival had over 2,500 fans on Friday night, a new record. Weaving together several solo performances with the quartets, the SWGMF gave fans a riveting new experience with gospel music. The festival is still held at GCU, where construction is currently taking place to add even more seating to the event center. In a phone interview, Allen commented that in the future he would like to see those new seats filled, especially by GCU students. “GCU is such a vibrant place,” Allen said. “It’s a great opportunity and a fantastic venue to introduce this music to a whole new generation of people. If we still have empty seats on the final night, we would like to give them to college students. It’s great music with a definite message...and it appeals to every age. I want to get another generation jazzed about [gospel] music!” 6 | SPRING 2014

One of the best qualities about the SWGMF is the “intimacy and relaxed atmosphere.” Like other gospel music festivals, the SWGMF gives people the opportunity to meet the artists and chat with them, see them as real people with families of their own waiting for them at home. For many people, it’s about more than the concert; it’s about what happens after the concert when they have the opportunity to learn about the artists, their struggles, and their devotion to God. As Bev Galloway, a gospel music fan from Canada and a regular attendee of the SWGMF, commented: “The performers are so sincere about what they’re doing. It’s not for show. It’s for the glory of God.” His words truly sum up the experience of the SWGMF. It’s not just a festival; it’s a fellowship, which draws people together and lifts their eyes toward God. The Southwest Gospel Music Festival will be back in Phoenix this coming February on the 9th through the 11th, with a promising line-up of groups, such as The Booth Brothers, Triumphant Quartet, The Penny Loafers, The Hoppers, and many more. So be sure to mark the date, check the car’s freon, and head over to Phoenix, Arizona, where the sun, the cacti, and outstanding gospel music await.

BEYOND THE STAGE: An Artist’s Questionnaire BY: MELISSA BRADY
If you’re a fan of Legacy Five, you’ve had a few years to get to know Trey Ivey. He’s the classically trained pianist who simply wants to play his music for Jesus. Being the newest, and the youngest, member of the group, he’s often at the receiving end of their jokes. It’s as if they must initiate the new guy, and the more they give him a hard time, the more folks love him. He’s a man of few words and we’re honored that he would join us, for this conversation, beyond the stage. What is your favorite moment of the day? I love the afternoon, because the Braves come on in the evening. I love sitting back in my chair, turning on a Braves game and not having a care in the world, except for watching the ballgame. If you weren’t a singer, what would you be? A baseball player. Which living person do you most admire? At this stage of my life, Lari Goss. For over thirty years, he has produced some of the greatest music of our industry and his arrangements have set a standard in gospel music. Listening to his music, you’d never know that he’s accomplished all of this without formal training. He’s one of my musical heroes. What words or phrases do you overuse? I can’t think of any, but Scott Fowler recently said I start each morning with the question “What’s around here to eat?” What talent would you most like to have? I wish I could speak well in front of people, to be a great MC. When it comes to talking, Gerald Wolfe, Michael Booth and Scott Fowler are naturals on stage. To be an engaging speaker, that’s a talent I’d like to have. If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be? I can be a bit of a neat freak, so I guess I’d be a little less obsessive about cleanliness. 14 | SPRING 2014
What is your most cherished possession? My niece is now four and a half years old, but I still have a picture of her when she was born. I keep it in my wallet and every time I pay for something, I see her picture. She was the first baby born into our family in eighteen years, so it was a really special time. What is your greatest fear? Heights and snakes. What is your motto? Cleanliness is next to godliness, but people tell me it’s not really in the Bible. Do you have a nickname? Well, on the bus, the guys call me “Muffin.” If you were a color, what would you be? White, because white is clean. Who is your greatest musical influence? My mom. Growing up, when I first started playing the piano, I wanted to play just like my mom. To me, playing took a whole lot of effort, but when Mom played, she just made a whole lot of music and it seemed so effortless to her. She just grabbed a whole lot of notes at one time. She played in church and she was the one who got me interested in music.

What is your idea of a perfect day? A day at the beach, or the ballpark. What makes you laugh? Scott Howard, on and off stage. What is your favorite sound? Going to a baseball game, the crack of the bat hitting the ball, I love that sound. Musically, I love the sound of scale degree 2 in a subdominant chord. What does God mean to you? Honestly, I’m amazed that God, Who is so big He can create everything that we see around us, cares, and has a vested interest in my problems, my joys and my life. What is your greatest extravagance? I don’t go shopping a lot, or spend a lot on clothes, but I do enjoy going out to eat. What book is currently on your nightstand? I’m currently reading two great books, “The Gift Of Forgiveness” by Charles Stanley and “Wild At Heart” by John Eldredge. What CD is in your player? Right now, I have no CDs in the player. I’m just enjoying Fox News radio. If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be? President George W. Bush. In my lifetime, the significant geo-political events and national security events happened in his presidency and it would be very interesting to just be able to ask him anything I wanted to, such as “What was it like?” If there was a movie made of your life, what would the title be? I can’t think of a title, but if there was a movie made of my life, I would definitely want Adrian Monk to play me. What would you say are the aspects of true friendship? Someone who will let me cry on their shoulder when the Braves are eliminated from playoff contention.
What is your favorite gift you ever received? The coolest gift I ever received was given to me from a man in our church when I was 5 years old. When I was really young, 4-5 years old, I wanted to be a preacher. So this man in our church, who was a carpenter, made me my own pulpit. It was miniature and perfectly sized for me to put my Bible on it, stand behind it and preach. Dog or cat? Dog. What is your favorite song? It Is Well With My Soul. What is your greatest regret? A lot of times, like in high school and college, I just wanted to do the work to get out. Now, I miss college and high school and I’ve come to see that sometimes, we’re so consumed with the actual event, we miss out on the process. Sometimes, I’m in such a hurry for the next thing or the next season, that I can miss out on the joys of the journey. If you could go anywhere, where would you go? I would go to every major league ballpark. What is the first song you ever played? The first song I ever played was the theme song for the 1996 Olympics. I had just started taking piano lessons the year the Olympics came to Atlanta. We watched it on television every day and, after hearing the theme song, I went to the piano and started playing it. That’s when my parents realized I could play by ear. What is the craziest thing that ever happened on tour? The guys convinced me that we had a morning service, so I got up at 6:00AM, showered and got ready, only to realize it was all a big prank. SPRING 2014 | 15

Anniston is the place we gather every year to give back to those who have supported and followed our ministry throughout the year. Anniston, Alabama has made its mark on the world in different ways. One of its founders, Samuel Noble, sought to create a community that was free from violence, alcohol and immorality; in its early days, Anniston was a closed town that earned the nickname “The Model City” by Atlanta journalist Henry Grady. In 1882 it was the first town in Alabama to have the convenience of electricity and a few years later, telephones were being used as well. Set in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, the natural beauty of the area has been stealing the hearts of both settlers and tourists alike for years. The hills of Alabama are also home to the annual Mark Trammell Quartet Homecoming . . .three days of uplifting music, encouraging speaking and Christian fellowship. Anniston is the place we gather every year to give back to those who have supported and followed our ministry throughout the year with our Annual Mark Trammell Quartet Homecoming. Every August, this year the 1st-3rd, we gather at the beautiful Hill Crest Baptist Church for two nights of Gospel Music with your favorite artists. Our friends Greater Vision and The Whisnants have agreed to come back and sing with us and we couldn’t be more excited! Each evening the doors will open at six o’clock and the concert will start at seven – admission is free, and a love offering will be received. It has always been the desire of this ministry to refrain from charging admission to this event - the Homecoming is our gift to the fans, and because of that, we do not want to charge folks to come into a church and be ministered to. This year Greater Vision will be singing Friday night and the Whisnants will join us on Saturday. In addition to our evening concerts, we have scheduled some fun activities for Saturday morning! Our wives have planned a very special luncheon for the ladies that will start at 11:30 AM - tickets are $10 dollars per person. This special time will feature great food, fellowship and guest speaker Susan Whisnant at Hill Crest’s Rock Gym. While the ladies are enjoying their time at Hill Crest, we also host our annual golf tournament on Saturday morning at the Silver

Lakes Golf Course. We always enjoy the fellowship with fans and other group members while out on the green and would love for you to join us! Jay Parrack and the Hill Crest Choir will lead us in a time of praise, MTQ will sing again and then Mark will deliver a message from the Word. The greatest compliment to a child of God in the twenty-first century is for someone to say, “You’re just a little bit strange.” The Bible says that we are peculiar people and if we truly walk the walk and talk the talk, we will be known as such. We are so excited to announce that now that same message can come into your home through gospel radio. “Your Walk Talks” was released to radio in April and we are more than pleased with the response it has received so far. The message and style of the song is proving to be a favorite. Every night folks come up to us and ask if we’ll sing the “walking talking” song. Being such, we are going to do a few special things for this release that we haven’t done before. First, we’ve had mugs made with “your walk talks” on one side and our logo on the other. These glossy black 12 ounce mugs not only make great gifts, but are a wonderful witnessing tool to use in the workplace. When your co-worker inquires what “your walk talks” means, you can share with them the message of the song! MTQ is also offering wrist bands – these little guys are worn by folks of all ages and will also feature the title of our new single, “Your Walk Talks”. Inexpensive and fun, you can get multiple bands for family members, Sunday School classes, youth groups, choirs, book clubs and any other group you’d like to surprise with a heartfelt, simple gift that shares your faith! Most of all, we are honored that this song is blessing people with its message. Beginning in 1952 when American evangelist Reverend Everett Swanson found himself overcome with a deep, God-given desire to help 35 orphaned South Korean children after the Korean conflict, Compassion International has expanded into a “worldwide ministry” that spreads the love of Christ to over 1.2 million children around the globe. Through providing for the physical, educational, and spiritual needs of the children, Compassion International is living out its mission statement: Releasing children from poverty in Jesus’ name. Unlike many organizations that focus mainly on feeding and clothing children, Compassion focuses on each individual child for who God created him or her to be. Committed to keeping Christ as the cornerstone of their ministry, Compassion International strives to meet the children’s physical needs as well as introduce them to the God who lovingly created and actively adores them. Working alongside local churches in the children’s communities, Compassion International successfully fulfills the needs that are unique to each specific area. Through Compassion’s Child sponsorship program, a sponsor partners with a single child, giving him or her the opportunity to receive health care, nutrition, educational opportunities, life-skills training, and, most importantly, the opportunity to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Child Sponsorship not only gives the children a chance to blossom into the young men and women God intends for them to be, but it also gives sponsors the chance to learn, reach out, and love children whom God has divinely placed in their lives. Another significant opportunity through Compassion is the Leadership Development program, which promises young minds the opportunity to pursue university learning or receive Christian leadership training. This program is similar to the Sponsorship program. It allows the sponsor to supply the needed funds for the aspiring student’s college tuition, instruction, and any additional expenses necessary. Alongside his or her sponsor, a young man or woman will not only attain the hope to dream beyond their circumstances, but they will also gain a hope centered on Jesus Christ and the purpose He has created them to fulfill. Letters from the Artists...
After my first “Compassion” trip several years ago, I was struck by the notion that the only difference between my own two children, and the children in El Salvador was where they were born. My kids, born in America, have plenty of everything: plenty of clean water, plenty of healthy food options, plenty of clothes, plenty of great school choices for their education, plenty of wonderful churches on every corner, plenty of safe communities to live in, and plenty of opportunities to excel in life. This simply WAS not the case with the children I spent 3 days with in El Salvador...I saw kids rummaging through city dumps looking for items to sell. I saw kids walking bare-foot in the dirt, which was wet with sewage. I saw kids hungry and eating food from trash heaps. I saw kids whose lives were full of despair and hopelessness. I saw empty, crushed spirits devoid of the hope that comes from knowing your Creator made you ON PURPOSE and FOR A PURPOSE. That was, at least, until I finally arrived at a Compassion Project. These little faces were full of life, hope, joy and even contentment. These faces were smiling. These voices were singing. These mouths were eating healthy food and drinking clean water. And most importantly, these ears were hearing the message, the good news, the Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ. These kids were being transformed into passionate followers of Christ. And their passion was contagious... I knew I had to do something to help this amazing organization reach even more kids. As of today, I have been on three compassion trips to El Salvador, the Dominican Republic and to Columbia. Between the members of L5 and the Legacy Five Foundation, we sponsor 4 kids as well as two Leadership Development College Kids. We have seen first hand the difference that is being made in the lives of these young people and their families. I hope you will seriously consider sponsoring a child through “Compassion International” today. I enjoy being a part of Compassion. We’ve taken two trips: the first to the Dominican Republic, the second to Columbia. Both were very rewarding. Compassion does not just feed and clothe kids. Sure, they feed and clothe kids, but that’s not the emphasis of their ministry. Compassion is like a local VBS...in the poorest of poor countries. Several days a week, kids walk from all over the neighborhood to the Compassion host church. Here they are taught English, Mathematics, basic hygiene, and, most of all, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In fact, most kids who go through the Compassion program wind up getting saved before they finish the program...Because of the enormous success of Compassion within the community, the churches that host the program always experience growth...Families who would never come in contact with a church come to the church for Compassion meetings and wind up hearing the Gospel. Lives are changed. What you don’t realize when you are spending time with these kids at their Compassion “Project” is just how poor they are. Because of the program, they are clean and happy. Their clothes are nice, they laugh a lot, and they are well-groomed. The shock comes when Compassion arranges an “in home” visit with one of the children you are sponsoring. I was amazed to see the little boy that Regina and I sponsor living in a “house” with only a concrete floor and a couple of plastic lawn chairs. That was their only furniture. He and his mom slept on a mattress on the concrete floor. It was truly heartbreaking to see how he lived. Just a few hours before, we’d been playing during a break at the Compassion Project. Judging from his smile, you would have thought he was a child from any normal subdivision neighborhood in the States. Not so. It was a shocker to see how he lived. It was hard to hold back the tears as I held his little hand and he proudly walked me through his neighborhood. My family chooses to sponsor several children. We’ve seen Compassion work, and we believe in it...I encourage you to go to the Compassion website and pick a child who does not have a sponsor, any child that you’d like to see in heaven someday. When you do, God will smile and you will too. – Rodney Griffin, Greater Vision
Compassion’s ministry is fully dedicated to helping children that live in poverty. Our implementing partners are local churches within impoverished areas of the world. With such a large focus on evangelism, our work goes hand in hand with the music and ministry of Southern Gospel artists. Knowing that each child sponsored will have the opportunity to accept Christ as their Savior has been something that every artist we work with is very passionate about. I am so grateful for each ministry partner we have in the community of Southern Gospel music. Through the years, we have seen so many precious lives impacted. THE HYMNS THE BEGINNING OF A NEW TREND BY: GERALD WOLFE
At last year’s National Quartet Convention, Ben Speer and I hosted a “Red Back Church Hymnal Sing-Along.” No one knew how many people would get up early on a Saturday morning and make their way to the Convention Center for a “Hymn Sing,” but we thought we would give it a try. I’m fairly certain everybody in the building was somewhat surprised to see nearly 3500 people show up to sing “old songs.” That event became the most talked about Showcase of the week, and it rekindled an idea I had that wasn’t new. The idea that most audiences we sing to every week, would really love to sing. Jump forward several months to the Gospel Music Celebration Cruise in January. We announced an afternoon “Hymn Sing” and the ship’s theater was filled to capacity… just as had happened the year before on a similar cruise. The same thing happened on the cruise that had happened at the NQC… the people in the audience wanted to sing… and THEY wanted to pick the songs! It was an amazing experience. In March, the Southern Gospel Music Guild asked if I would co-host an event for the Trinity Broadcasting Network, to honor Pathway Press, publisher of the “red-backed” Church Hymnal, and the Stamps-Baxter Music Company. Of course, I agreed, and Jason Crabb and I hosted the event. We were joined by 45 well-known Gospel Singers, a live band, several dignitaries, including former US Attorney General, John Ashcroft, and hundreds of audience members for the two-hour celebration. The television broadcast garnered such a large viewing audience, the program was immediately scheduled to air again in May.

All of these events kept bringing me back to the reality that our audience LOVES to sing… and they REALLY LOVE to sing songs they know, but don’t get the opportunity to sing very often. There’s something very special about a familiar melody, married to familiar lyric. It can immediate take you back to a moment in time, when God did something special in your life. There’s no substitute for a special memory. Classic Hymns and great Gospel Songs endure because of their truth, and the memories and feelings they rekindle. The timing is right, and people everywhere are ready to experience something they probably haven’t experienced in a long time… a special moment in time… a special feeling… and the opportunity to SING! Back in early summer of 2013, I had the opportunity to sit down with some dear friends and cowriting partners, Joel Lindsey and Wayne Haun, to do what we usually do—dream out loud.
At this point on my journey, however, I had nothing in me to dream about. I was VERY tired, worn out from concerts at home and abroad. In the past three years, Ernie Haase and Signature Sound (EHSS) has performed on five of the seven continents. International dates are amazing, but ERNIE HAASE they take a toll on your body. Crossing multiple time zones, sleeping on airplanes, and eating food that you are not used to can wear you out. Coupled with managing all the affairs of EHSS and our new venture with StowTown Records, I was just beyond exhausted. My Pop raised me on good Ol’ fashioned mid-western work ethics: See a job, do the job. Don’t wait on anyone else to point it out. Just do it!
So, the song “We’ll Work” came from a worn out tenor singer who has been hitting the road hard for twenty-six years: traveling on a bus, eating truck stop meals, away from family and friends, and acting like he is NEVER fazed by any of the grind. This song was written as a personal mission statement. We walk by faith and I write and sing by faith. These words are words I needed to sing because I was tired. Letting the words sink into your head is one thing but letting them trickle down into your heart and spirit is another thing altogether.
We are lifting up the chorus, like saints gone before us, to declare His love while in this world below. By His Spirit He will lead us as we keep our eyes on Jesus. We will shout it to the nations till we get home.
Jesus was weary under the weight of the cross and the weight of our sins, but He finished the call. We are also called to finish. Not to give up, but to stand up and show up every day till the Lord calls us home. We, like the apostle Paul, should strive to say one day, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day...” (2 Timothy 4: 7-8). Keep working my friends!
So, at the time of this writing session, I was just about ready to say “Enough!” and raise the white flag of surrender. However, the scripture says: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). This admonishment is in the Bible because we do get weary in well-doing. It’s not a sin to be weary and want to give up. It’s amazing to me how many people beat themselves up over their struggles with fear and doubt. The whole human experience is the struggle and the climb, hand-in-hand, with our Lord. He provides the fuel we need when we just can’t take another step. We as writers do not always write what we are experiencing to be true but what we HOPE to be true. Sometimes you just have to write what you WANT to be true in your life of faith.

A MODERN DAY MIRACLE BY: VERONICA BURNISTON
“When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid,” David writes in Psalms 56:3-4. Trust. This well-known, one-syllable word permeates through the Old and New Testaments, appearing at least twenty-two times within the Psalms alone (NIV). What is it about the word trust that leaves people feeling uneasy, frightened even? What does the action of trusting God truly entail?

However, through this hurricane, Libbi learned to trust God more than ever before, and, in addition, she, along with The Perrys, witnessed Tracy’s miraculous recovery, a “modern day miracle.” The beloved southern gospel group, The Perrys, truly began on Christmas day in 1970. It was not the usual festive, present-filled holiday most would expect. The Perry family was “drowning in
According to the Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible, the word “trust” in Psalm 56 goes back to the Hebrew term bâtach (baw-takh’) which is a verb that expresses a strong sense of “safety and security that is felt when one can rely on someone or something else...this expression can also relate to the state of being confident, secure, without fear.”
“I HAVE TO TRUST HIM, NOT JUST IN THIS SITUATION, BUT IN EVERY ASPECT OF MY LIFE.” In other words, when David says “In God I trust” he’s essentially telling God: “In You, I have secured my confidence, and, no matter how this situation turns out, You will not fail me.” For many Christians, the concept of trusting God is either a much needed release of stressful circumstances beyond their control or a tug-of-war match between them and God when they only halfheartedly surrender their struggles to Him. There’s no denying the fact that sometimes it is downright difficult to trust God when the hurricanes thrash through life, when all the eyes can see is the breaking and the burning, when all one knows is the sickness and sorrow and desolation left behind. But even then, God promises that He will never leave His children nor forsake them (Hebrews 13:5). There is safety and security in God if one will only trust Him to be who He says He is and to do what He says He will do. Recently, Libbi Perry Stuffle (The Perrys) experienced one of these hurricanes when her husband, Tracy, became gravely ill last January,

sorrow” that Christmas after the loss of Libbi’s older brother, Johnny. Surrounded by loving neighbors and church members, the Perry siblings (Randy, Deborah, and Libbi) gathered around an old piano and sang their first song together: “Jesus is Coming Soon.” Twelve years later, The Perrys suffered another loss. This time losing Libbi’s baby brother. Taking their sorrow and using it as their ministry, The Perrys performed at a church in Cartersville, GA that, unknown to The Perry family, had suffered a loss of their own recently. That night fifty-six people gave their lives to Christ, and The Perrys decided it was time to broaden their horizons and take on their ministry full-time. Today, The Perrys, led by Libbi and Tracy Stuffle, maintain a southern gospel fan-base that adore not only their musical talent and SPRING 2014 | 29

ministry but The Perrys themselves. With numerous awards and honors presented to them over the years, The Perrys continue their God-centered mission, taking their experiences and turning them into a passionate ministry for Christ. On January 21, 2013, Tracy, after a sudden stroke, suffered cerebral hemorrhage, later followed by four brain bleeds. After two and a half to three weeks into Tracy’s worsening health, the doctor informed Libbi that Tracy had meningitis of the brain. She was shocked. How many people had she heard about that had had this condition and passed away? What in the world was God doing? As Libbi recalled during a recent phone interview, at that point in her life, standing before the doctor who’d just delivered such terrible news, she was “trying to trust God.” She mentioned this to another doctor at the facility and he turned to her and said: “Are you really? Are you worried? If you’re worried, you’re not totally trusting God. You’re telling Him that you don’t believe He can fix this.” Startled, Libbi didn’t know how to respond. At first, she didn’t like the doctor’s answer. But the more she thought about it, the more she wondered Do I really trust Him? Finally, after thinking it through, she spoke to God in her heart: You know what, God, she said, regardless of what happens, regardless of how this ends, I still trust you. For nearly ten months, Tracy and Libbi were off the road, Libbi performing only on special dates in locations near Nashville, TN. Then on September 23, 2013, Tracy was well enough to leave the hospital for good; he had his heart set on returning to the road with Libbi and singing with the group. Beginning on January 1, 2014, he did just that and has been performing every weekend since. Looking back over everything, Libbi commented, “[Through those circumstances] God was preparing me. It’s easy to praise God when things are going good. But when the storm blows in that’s when you know what you’re made of...I have to trust him, not just in this situation, but in every aspect of my life.” Since Tracy’s release from the hospital, God has continued to mend him, day by day. And although he remains partially paralyzed on his right side, Tracy and Libbi hope he’ll be walking on his own by next year. It has only been fifteen months since his hospitalization, but God has provided Tracy with the ability to talk and sing when many people who suffered similar conditions would most likely still be in a care facility or have passed away.

With Tracy’s return to the group, The Perrys recently released their newest album--“Into His Presence”--on April 8th. Libbi mentioned a powerful song called “Reminders,” written by Kyla Rowland, that appears on the new album. According to Libbi, the song talks about how people tend to view scars as painful when in reality “they’re a picture of what God can do.” The album, produced by Wayne Haun of StowTown Records, also contains their current single: “I Can Trust Him,” which Libbi claims is their testimony for the 155 days Tracy was in and out of the hospital. Within the second verse, this song redirects the speaker’s focus to God, reciting: I can trust him. God is at work in all things. He is able. I can trust him. “In every seat that we sing to, there is a hurting person,” Libbi said. “Whether it is a small need or a humungous need, to God, it doesn’t matter. He cares as much for the little one as the big one. It’s our duty to share with them and encourage them with our struggles and what we’ve been through.” Later she commented on her hopes for the new album: “I want [Into His Presence] to say something, to encourage people that they can make it another day.” Libbi would also like to encourage others to trust in God, no matter their circumstances. Through her and Tracy’s trying time this past year, she has felt the truth pressed upon her heart that God is faithful to those He loves. And even though, at times, she feels like a “weary, beaten soldier,” Libbi knows that God gives her new grace every day and a new undying strength to share His truth with the world.

OUT OF THE RAT RACE AND

Henry lay on his side, exhausted, a short distance from the mill. Only the rasping sound of his labored breathing broke the still morning air. From somewhere within Henry could recall the rush of adrenaline that had once accompanied his first energetic steps toward the finish line he assumed lay ahead of him. He couldn’t remember when he had started running, worse yet… (1) he couldn’t remember why he was running. In the beginning it had been so exciting. But somewhere along the way, the exhilaration had been replaced with exhaustion and a numbing realization that crushed all hope: (2) there was no finish line. (3) Henry closed his eyes and allowed his breathing to slowly return to normal. In that rare moment of inactivity, he tasted the reality of the world around him for the first time in a long time. The smell of fresh straw, the shaft of sunlight streaming through the window. He took it all in—but only for a moment. A sound from the mill caught his attention, and he opened his eyes just in time to see the huge circular treadmill whine to a stop. Slowly he sat up and stared at the machine that had dominated so much of his life. “This treadmill is killing you,” (4) a voice within whispered. “Don’t waste another moment on this race to nowhere.” He drank deeply from the cool water nearby, the voice triggered a dull ache in his heart. There had to be more to life than the machine offered. The cool water revived him, and his breathing slowed. He felt refreshed. Maybe he could start a new life. (5) Maybe today! But how? What would he do next? Where would he go? What goals would he pursue? Well, those decisions could come later. Right now he felt a little (6) frightened by the prospect of (7) change. Maybe someday he would taste life again but for now he would stick with what was familiar— (8) and safe. So, still dreaming about things that could be, he mindlessly stepped onto the wheel for the thousandth time in
his short life. Soon its mesmerizing whir and reflected light flashing from the turning spokes blocked the pain. Freedom and adventure could wait. For now, the treadmill required no (9) risk, no (10) faith, no (11) thought. He would live later. For now, he would just run. I hope you have figured out that Henry is a hamster! More importantly, I hope you see the parallels to real life. Hidden within this little story I wrote over twenty years ago are the secrets to getting off the treadmill, out of the rat race and back into life. Throughout the story I numbered the secrets in bold print so you can review them. 1. Find something worth running for. 2. Know that there is a finish line and where it is. 3. Find a way to rest and use that time to think clearly about what race you are in. 4. Listen to that small voice that calls you to life. 5. Don’t put off living, take the first step today. 6. Don’t let fear keep you from doing what is right. 7. Don’t let the comfort of the familiar keep you from the adventure of possibility. 8. Recognize that choosing not to live is unsafe. Go for it. 9. Risk. 10. Faith is the key that unlocks and mediates all the above. It is the foundation for making the right decisions to live life fully alive. 11. Think your plan through with intention to act on it.

“Paul, you’ve been doing The Gospel Greats radio program for more than 34 years. What keeps you going?” Well, thanks for asking. There are two main things, actually. First, I have no question that what we are doing is what God has given us to do. No, I don’t remember any particular “call” to this line of work. But, especially after all these years, I can look back and see that through all of my various interests, abilities and career experiences God was preparing and grooming me to do the kind of work I’m doing. I think any long-time Christian who’s doing the work that the Lord has intended for him or her to do can feel this affirmation in his spirit. I do. And it’s a really good and encouraging feeling. And, yes, we all need encouragement to continue on. Now, I’m not saying I always do it as well as it could be done. But I try. And I always pray for God’s leading, His empowerment and His blessing. Without any one of those things, we’d be spinning our wheels. The second thing? Well, actually I think it’s an extension of the first because I believe God uses His people to encourage others. If we didn’t see any results of what we do, it would be hard to continue. But we do. And letters we receive from listeners are a tremendous source of such encouragement. Like I Wish I’d Lived GOD’S GRACIOUS LOOPHOLE BY: CHRIS ALLMAN
It’s a hot summer day that finds you and a buddy climbing through a barbed wire fence to make your way down to a pond that is situated on private property. Fishing poles in hand, you expect that the day’s take will be epic but instead, to your dismay, no bites. You give up on fish for dinner and you start searching for the perfect flat rock. Yep, that perfect one that was made for riding on the surface of the still water. In your young mind you imagine you can use it to set the world record for number of skips on a pond with a single toss. Remember that? You get your footing; you rare back and let the stone fly in such a way as to strike the water perfectly. It’s a beautiful thing as it skims the surface! Surely you did it! The record has been set and will certainly never be broken! Gee, those were the days. Now… Let’s focus on something else that took place as the rock struck the peaceful water. There were ripples. Close your eyes and picture the ripples. They go on and on and on. Now think of the peaceful water as being representative of the life that you enjoy and the rock playing the part of a terrible decision that you made. As soon as it strikes the smooth surface, the ripples begin. What do the ripples represent? Those ripples represent the consequences, which are caused by sin. As the stone has caused wrinkles in the peaceful water, so does sin in the lives of those who carelessly hurl unwise choices. The ripples are out of control and too numerous to count; much like the consequences we’re served as a result of our sinful choices. So the mistake has been made and the consequences are under way; and no, just like the ripples, they can’t be stopped. Up to this point in your life, you may have felt as if you could control everything, but you have no power of the effects of sin. Consequences have to run their course. Rather dismal, isn’t it? You might ask, where is the hope in this scenario? Well, you’ve asked the right guy. I’ve been there. I’ve buried my head in my hands and wondered how I would ever be able to cherish life again. Have you? Are you there right now? Read on… If the picture I’ve painted so far applies to you, here’s a reminder that Jesus died for this very reason. He certainly didn’t die so that a perfect man might remain perfect. He died because of our insufficiency. He died because we needed saving. He died because He knew that we would make terrible decisions regardless of our raising. Yes, He died because He was well aware that you and I would inevitably blow it!
With that said, dry your eyes, blow your nose and pull yourself together. Those consequences that are rippling out of control are going to settle down, and if you’ll take the time to commit your “stuff ” to the Lord, believe it or not, good will eventually come of it. Don’t only take it from me; take it from Peter. Who would have known that a freshly resurrected Lord would have had the angel to tell the ladies at the tomb, “But, go tell His disciples and PETER, He is going ahead of you into Galilee.” Peter had just denied even knowing Jesus a few days before! By our standards, that was grounds for dismissal! Aren’t you thankful that God doesn’t operate by “Our standards?!” Jesus used Peter regardless of his betrayal. Jesus longs to use you as well. I believe that which you are facing right now was as vivid in the mind of Christ, as He hung on the cross, as it is real to you in this moment. I believe He was thinking of your exact situation when He breathed these words into the ear of the Apostle Paul… And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28 NKJV) No, all things are not good, but even the worst of things can be used in the capable hands of God to weave a beautiful tapestry of testimony that has the power to change lives. You might consider Romans 8:28 a loophole. He’s written it so that the consequences that would have destroyed us might be the catalyst of a brand new beginning. With that truth brought to life, now it’s up to you. Will you claim His sacrifice as sufficient for covering that which you believe to be unforgivable? Or will you continue to believe that His promise is not applicable to your situation? I’m going to offer a little free advice. Claim it and walk on. Life is still worth living!

GOSPEL MUSIC FINALLY COMES TO

Just east of the geographical Fall Line, Virginia’s beautiful Tidewater region is nestled between the Atlantic and Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Christian music has been loved by the locals for decades, but never has an event such as the Virginia Beach Gospel Music Fest been held in the area! For three days in the peaceful month of October, Eastern Shore natives will enjoy more of “our kinda music” than they would in months of individual concerts! But what about those driving in for the Fest? Unlike many of its neighboring vacation hotspots, Virginia Beach is known for its rich history, natural beauty and family-friendly appeal. Located within the city limits is the Naval Air Station Oceana, and just inland you’ll find the incomparable Norfolk shipyard. Step back to a time of old railroad towns and intimate fishing villages. Listen for the unique old-world accents spoken here, especially by Tangier Island residents! Shop at roadside stands, and learn how to crab from a pier.
