Barium Enema
Welcome to the International Medical Center’s Medical Imaging Center.. We are pleased to offer you this simple guide, which will help you to learn more about the examination of the digestive system by barium enema. We wish you speedy recovery. What is a Barium Enema? Barium Enema is a medical examination that helps diagnose problems in the colon (also known as the large intestine), such as the presence of polyps or tumors. When Barium Enema is placed in the colon, x-rays can show the colon more clearly. The procedure is done on outpatient basis, and could take one hour. It is not painful, but could be uncomfortable. After the procedure, barium is extracted in feces like any other food material. The testing procedure is very safe, but if you pregnant you must not have the test due to amount of radiation used.
Why Barium Enema? A barium enema may be performed for a variety of reasons, including abdominal pain or a change in bowel habits (such as diarrhea or constipation), as well as a change in the caliber (size) of the stool. This exam is also requested when parasites, blood, mucus, or pus are found in stool. How to prepare? • Before a barium enema, tell your doctor if you are experiencing any symptoms. • You should tell the doctor if you are pregnant. • You should tell the doctor if you are allergic to any of the medications used in the treatment. • You will be given laxative to keep the bowel empty. • You should not eat or drink 8 hours before the examination.
How does the equipment look like? The equipment consists of a radiographic table, an x-ray tube and a television-like monitor that is located in the examining room. How does the procedure work? You will be positioned on the examination table and the radiologist will then insert a small tube into the rectum and begin to instill, using gravity, a mixture of barium and water into the colon. In some circumstances, the radiologist or referring physician may prefer a water and iodine solution rather than barium. Next, a series of x-ray images is taken. Part way through the procedure, you may be asked to go to the bathroom and empty some of the Barium. The radiologist may also place some air in the colon to take more x-rays with double contrast. You have to drink plenty of water after examination to facilitate excretion of barium.
How long the procedure takes? It generally will take 30 to 60 minutes. In particular cases; delayed imaging may be required. What are the benefits of Barium Enema? • Helps in the diagnosis of many diseases because it is real-time imaging. After the examination, patients may leave and resume his daily activities normally.
