MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP. Fellows’ Guide
Improving the world through engineering
INTRODUCTION
01
Welcome to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and congratulations on your election as a Fellow. By becoming a Fellow, you have achieved the highest level of elected membership, demonstrating exceptional commitment to and innovation in mechanical engineering. This guide to membership outlines the exclusive services available to you and the ways in which you can make the most of your membership with the Institution. Your Institution is the fastest growing professional engineering body in the UK, and you join more than 115,000 members working at the heart of the most important and dynamic industries in the world. You can rest assured you are registered with a top-performing engineering body, as reported by the Engineering Council. Through its commitment to improving the world through engineering, the Institution will be working hard to provide the professional support, learning and development that you need throughout your working life. Wherever you want to be, the Institution can help take you there. We look forward to continuing our lifelong engineering partnership.
The pride one has in being a Fellow of such a reputable Institution puts you in prime position to encourage other engineers to join. Together we can continue to strengthen the profile and relevance of such an important profession. Nuno Lourenco CEng FIMechE Project Lead – CAE, Jaguar Land Rover UK imeche.org/membership
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND REGISTRATION Gaining professional registration not only demonstrates your motivation and drive, it enhances your standing in the engineering community and makes you more attractive to employers. Institution membership shows a commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and to supporting the profession through innovation and lifelong learning. By registering as a Fellow, you are investing in your future. You will benefit from a long-term increase in earning potential, international recognition of your qualifications and independent verification of your skills and experience. As a Fellow, the CPD opportunities available to you could enhance your career opportunities even further. You will have access to our resources, advice and expertise as well as a network of similarly minded engineers.
In light of its importance, from January 2019, recording of CPD will be mandatory for all professionally registered and active engineers. Each year, a random sample of professionally registered engineers will be asked to participate in the CPD audit. Members will be required to participate upon such request. Our Career Developer tool is designed to make it easier for you to plan, record and review your CPD experiences. CPD can take many forms, both formal learning and informal activities that enhance your expertise and experience. Flexible and suitable for all stages of an engineering career, Career Developer puts you in control of your CPD recording, so you always have a comprehensive and accessible summary, even if you change jobs. It provides a downloadable record of all your CPD activities, enabling you to demonstrate how you have met your CPD obligations each year.
Fellowship represents an international currency which sets out your capabilities and credentials straight away without the need of further explanation. Dr. Jonathan Jeffers CEng FIMechE Lecturer, Imperial College London, UK
LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT As you progress in your career, your continued success will be dependent on demonstrating your professional competence. To support this, the Institution’s training courses are all mapped to the Engineering Council’s UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC), which determines the value and requirements of each level of registration. The Institution understands your training needs at each stage of your career and pre-defined courses are available to you at a discounted rate; these courses, which are designed for engineers by engineers, can also count towards the CPD requirements of professionally registered engineers.
As a Fellow you will, no doubt, recognise the importance of ongoing professional and personal development; many successful engineers will have acquired knowledge and skills from more senior and experienced colleagues throughout their careers. We have designed a number of courses that will help you to support the next generation of engineers, whether you are coaching your staff to achieve their maximum potential (Coaching fundamentals) or mentoring them as they develop as engineers (CMI Level 5 Award in Coaching & Mentoring Skills), we can give you tried-andtested models which will help you to impart some of your experience and expertise.

Conferences and Events
Thanks to a global network of members, the Institution holds regional events wherever you are in the world. To meet your needs we have established geographical regions giving members in those areas more contact with the Institution, and also providing opportunities for them to share ideas with each other. The regions are responsible for the whole of the Institution membership; each region is made up of a number of volunteer committees. They work to engage their colleagues and raise the profi le of the local professional engineering community by holding events, sharing news and building links with like-minded organisations.
Throughout the year, the Institution holds conferences, workshops, lectures and seminars on a host of subjects, offering members excellent opportunities to get involved, network with peers and learn about the latest innovations and developments in the engineering world. Ranging from short half-day workshops to full three-day conferences, these events bring you the latest research, news and best practice from industry and academia. You can see what’s coming up on the main events calendar on the Institution website imeche.org/events
The Institution is also involved in a number of joint groups in conjunction with other engineering institutions. These groups aim to provide support and opportunities for members of all the institutions living locally and promote engineering. In areas where members are more sparsely represented, the Institution has a number of country representatives, giving you the opportunity to still get involved. GETTING INVOLVED Many Institution members also use their membership to get involved in the Ambassador programme. There is a wealth of volunteering opportunities open to members, ranging from one-off projects to long-term commitments, and they are an excellent way to gain new skills, knowledge and experience in addition to contributing to your CPD commitments. Education is an important focus for the Institution and has been identified as a priority for all members. To help the Institution achieve its objective of ‘inspiring the next generation’, members have recognised that young people need to be inspired to become engineers. The Ambassador programme aims to do that by working with schools and communities to promote the engineering profession as an exciting and dynamic one that can help resolve many of society’s challenges. As an Ambassador, you will have the chance to represent your profession and give something back to the engineering community. The projects that you get involved in can also help you work towards professional accreditation and gain an insight into different areas of the engineering industry and the education sector. You will build valuable communication and leadership skills as you network with other engineers from many sectors and engineering institutions. Roles that you can register to volunteer for include: Education Inspire the next generation of engineers by presenting in schools, attending events, giving careers advice and talking about your reallife experiences: • Bloodhound SSC – promote engineering in schools through this open learning project which uses sophisticated engineering techniques to try to break the land speed record. • Encouraging STEM careers – promote STEM subjects in more than 4,000 primary and secondary schools with presentations and activity days, facilitated by Primary Engineer. • Formula Student – be a volunteer or judge at Europe’s largest student motorsport event: the Institution’s flagship undergraduate ‘real world’ engineering competition.
imeche.org/membership
Engineering Knowledge Network with like-minded engineers and transfer your knowledge through regional events, visits and meetings, wherever you are in the world: • Regional roles – join a panel and help organise events, blog, become a web officer, or volunteer as chair and help support the local engineering community. • Industry committee – represent your industry and help input your knowledge into events the division holds. • Independent Mentor Service – we will match mentors with mentees to help offer guidance and support on careers decisions, membership progression or peer-to-peer industry information.
Membership Development There are a number of ways that you might get involved in helping developing engineers work towards registration, and you can also get involved in the application process by participating in the assessment process. As a Member of the Institution and a professional engineer, you can volunteer to take part in professional review interviews as an assessor, or there are a variety of committees and boards that are responsible for implementing and reviewing the Institution’s assessment policies. Taking part in regional events, committees and a number of other volunteering roles, will give you the opportunity to join the Council or Trustee Board and make a significant impact on shaping the strategic future of the Institution. Whatever volunteer role you get involved in, there are a host of resources available to support you and give you the tools you need to fulfil your role. You can find out more on the Institution website imeche.org/volunteering If you would like to register as a volunteer, email ambassador@imeche.org
