LIBRARY ARCHIVE MEMBERS’ HUB.

Since 1847, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers has offered a library service. We maintain a world-class engineering library and archive, both in print and online. Our Library and Members’ Hub offers space for collaborative working, meetings and private study.
We have over 90,000 titles available in our print collection, covering all the major mechanical engineering subjects such as energy, tribology, transport, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and manufacturing. In addition to books and journals, we hold standards, conference papers and IMechE proceedings.
Members can access over 70,000 ebooks and ejournals anywhere for free using their Institution log-in.

We have a dedicated library team happy to help you. Whether you’re researching a project, need help finding information, or if you have a general question, we’re here to help.
Members in the UK and Europe can borrow items by postal loan. We can also arrange loans from other libraries if we don’t have exactly what you’re looking for. Copies of articles can be emailed.

Our Library and Members’ Hub offers members dedicated areas for collaborative working, meetings and private study in a unique historic setting at the heart of Westminster. The hub offers comfortable, casual seating and an open space to enjoy the architecture, enviable views over St James’s Park and prestige objects from the Institution’s archive collections.
The Archive charts the history of the Institution and mechanical engineering, and is open to all by appointment.
We hold a wealth of personal papers of prominent mechanical engineers, including those of our first president, George Stephenson, and his son Robert.
Our drawing collections range from technical plans to illustrations, while our company records span from the earliest steam railway companies to twentieth century engine manufacturers.
Our Institutional records, which date from our founding in 1847, include Council and Committee minutes, conference papers, and membership records.
Our membership records are a valuable resource for family history research. Early records (up to 1938) have been digitised and are available to members for free via Ancestry.
