Competition for the Urban Design of Shenzhen North Station CBD & Architecture Concept Design of Landmark Building(s) Shenzhen, China

0.0 CONCEPT FOR URBAN MASTERPLANNING Since the establishment of the Special Economic Zone in the late 1970s, Shenzhen has seen unprecedented growth from a village of 30,000 to a city of 10 million, it took less than 3 decades. There is almost no precedent in the history of civilization. Rome has an urban history of several millenniums, Paris several centuries and even New York that could be considered a young city has been under process of urban grown for more than 2 centuries. Although it took years to form their urban tissue they all have one thing in common with Shenzhen: a moment of unpreceded urban grown and development. Paris for example suffers a complete modernization from 1850 till 1870 during this period Paris doubled in size and tripled its population. This urban regeneration was led by Georges-Eugene Haussman and resulted not only in a bigger and modern Paris but also in an cleaner greener and more efficient city. One could say that the major intervention and legacy of Haussman was generating a modern network or green boulevards and public spaces but he also created rules and design standards that would regulate the cities architecture till the present day. Paris strong identity that is appreciated all over the

world is a result of a coherent and homogeneous architectural style. Diversity is a fundamental ingredient of a successful cosmopolitan city that is not a contradictory thread of thinking with the example of Paris above. Big historical cities like Rome, Paris, berlin and New York offer a coherent diversity. They are polycentric cities with several identifiable neiburhoods. Those neiboorhoods generate the cities diversity, they differ between each other but they all have a inner urban coherence an a clear strong identity, they sometimes even operate as a city in the city.

The 6 main buildings of the site are anchored around a central urban park. In order to keep the design of the urban park simple the transportation node is placed in the basement levels allowing for the much needed open green space that is area is lacking. The two plinth levels merge with the design of the urban park creating a network of overpasses and green platforms that seamlessly weave into the urban setting rather than in segregate it. In order to ensure that the upper platforms of the plinth are lively urban spaces the commercial areas are placed facing the exterior generating street life. The overpass network is a true elevated street connecting all towers of the Shenzhen North Station Business Center reinforcing the sense a neighborhood.

The water features offer the urban park a special character, cool places for leisure activities where people can rest meet and shop.

Our design vision is based in the creation of a strong neighborhood identity, to achieve that we believe is necessary to establish rules that ensure that the architecture of the towers is coherent and all the elements of the design have a harmonious relationship. More than defining the exact shape of the towers we wanted to define a framework that would allow a diversity of architectural languages to coexist without disturbing

The towers are designed based in a system of equal setbacks that results that the top third of the towers have smaller footprints that the bottom third. For a Functional aspect this design solution allows for a better accommodation of the mixed- used programs. The hotel program is place in the top thinner part of the tower and the bigger footprints of the base give the building maximum flexibility to incorporate programs like department stores, congress areas or even rethink the work space abandoning the idea of the traditional individual office space. From the perspective of the architecture the setbacks put all the towers in dialog since the shape of one tower responds to the shape of the neighboring towers this allows to open views and daylight optimization, resulting in skyline of dancing towers.
