Urban Section through Atrium Building

The site for the intervention is found. A secondary elevated street which currently used by local bus service, tram and by few cars. Considered a fringe area between different city tissues the site possesses interesting tensions. Here, the relationship between big and small, residential and commercial, buzzing and quiet has to be addressed.

Various changes in the urban planning of the Zuidas in the near future will make it possible to re-purpose this delicately situated street and develop it in accordance to a master plan. One of the main goals of the Zuidas master planning is to diversify its current palette of functions and to turn it into a 24h city quarter with a high percentage of dwellings and cultural facilities.

Thematic focus on the treatment of the ground.

GROUND The strengths of public domains are highly determined by the character, quality and topography of the grounds that they are based on. In Zuidas the emphasis is put on the vertical surfaces of the facades of high-rise buildings shaping a silhouette only possible to experience from afar. A ground which can host many kinds of different zones for different purposes should also allow its users to manipulate and customize it according to their needs. Through a soft hierarchy introduced into the ground by rising and lowering areas, it is possible to keep large coherent interiors as a spatial unit and at the same time create complex ensembles with different dimensions.

Thematic focus on the character of the roof / ceiling of the large public interior.
