Walking in my Purpose

8 IMPACT DETROIT MAGAZINE INTERNATIONAL

Greetings to you, My beautiful people! Here we are again, and I am happy about it. October is a month of many milestones, tributes, and celebrations. As we say goodbye to Summer and hello to Fall, we do so with tremendous gratitude. October has been noted as the month where days are full of pumpkin and spices, fallen leaves, a cup of apple cider, and the sound of wood crackling in the fireplace. Time to put away those summer shoes and pull out those cute little leather/suede booties while grabbing a cute sweater or jacket. Honestly, this has been a challenging year, mourning the loss of so many and not just from Covid-19 or Cancer but from the senseless murders of our young brothers and sisters. From Congressman John Lewis to Chadwick Boseman, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and so many more too many to name them all, we commit ourselves to some good trouble and lift our voices to be heard. “Justice”! It has become apparent that the fight continues. I encourage every one of you to get

out and cast your vote in November because we do matter. I would be remiss if I did not remind you that there are victories. Many battles won and for that, we celebrate! Congratulations to our Cancer warriors:

In conclusion, I leave you with this as I approach chapter on October 25th with celebration and joy in my heart; I will embrace this milestone with humility and gratitude, for I am genuinely grateful. Looking back over my life, I can honestly say that I have been blessed beyond measure and God is not through with me yet! Love you all.

The Beauty of My Soul

And just like that, it became clear! The idolized idea of love and the many languages associated with it- Soul Mate, Life Partner, Twin Flame, Kindred Spirit no longer took precedence of my being, and I was ok with that! The façade was no longer a mystery.

I have always been fascinated with the essence and the art of love. As a little girl, I thoroughly enjoyed watching cartoons that ended with the power of love; And even more so as an adult, that feeling became more pronounced.

16 IMPACT DETROIT MAGAZINE INTERNATIONAL

The feeling of having an out-of-body experience due to the energy of love elevates me and makes me believe that someday, I can find that kind of love. I crave a good romance movie, you know, the ones that leave you crying, I mean like sobbing, as if you were lovestruck; while in your mind, thanking God that no one else was there to witness this breakdown.

I often find myself daydreaming of being swept away by someone who truly loves and sees my entire being. That desire became my mantra! I just knew the right guy would walk into my life and become my “Power of Love. “Having such a strong need to be loved, I began sending emotional signals all over the place. The last thing on my mind was thinking that the signs I displayed would be misread and reek of desperation. As a result, along with that desire also came the “misfits. “I was surrounded by individuals who exemplified the “idea of love” to get close to my light/aura. Still, after a while, the lack of authenticity always reveals itself.

The repeating cycle of this daunting experience left me feeling insecure, doubtful, and futile. I despised feeling less than worthy! For deep down, I know I am called for greatness, so why is it that no one else sees it and values it? Am I not enough?... I found myself questioning my thoughts and energy patterns- am I giving off the wrong vibrations? Do I want this external validation too severely? These questions led me to go even further within myself, and that’s when I realized that a shift was needed. I needed to reconnect with myself more holistically. I needed an emotional, mental, spiritual, physical revamping. I am a firm believer in prayer and confirmations, so I started praying for clarity. I went into a series of mediation, love affirmations, and nature walks as a way of my quieting the noise. I knew I needed to be still, for my desire to connect with the vibration of love I wanted to receive required me not only to see it but to embrace it and become one with it as well.

I had to learn how to show up for myself, but most importantly, show up for myself with an open heart. On this path, I often felt like procrastinating and bottom-line settling, settling for who I was, and giving up on who I was destined to become. However, during

those times, I would ask myself, “Now, whose energy are you carrying?” thus reminding me of the value that lies at the end of my “love” journey.

My not-so-healthy experience with love, and the continuous desire to be externally recognized. The longing to be loved has such a desire that I failed to understand that I was the portal. And little did I know that this was all a part of my soul plan. The many cries over the “heart-filled” romance movies, and my outer body love experience desires, were just steps in my unlocking my soul’s portal, the one thing no one else’s love could have done. And just like that, it became clear! The façade was lifted.

I was able to find love in the beauty of my soul, that sacred place that lights me up, even when no one else sees me. My area of connection to my creator, source, and authentic “I Am” self.

My desire to dance with the rhythm of unconditional love activated the power of my soul.

My soul’s beauty is an unselfish river of love that flows with the curves of forgiveness and gratitude, as “HER” light sparkles on the banks of this world.

What does your Soul Beauty look like?

17 IMPACT DETROIT MAGAZINE INTERNATIONAL

It is that time of the year when women garnished in white with lace or satin, as flowers adorn the altar and bouquets are in full bloom; the 3-tier cake waiting for the first taste as the band prepares for the first dance. And as the door opens, that moment the bride will look at her groom for the first time. The moment when her companion stands waiting dapperly in his custom suit tailored just for him; in red, maybe orange, or even purple, a color he requested to compliment his bride’s color palette. If asked, our groom would say he took center stage, second of course to his bride. That is the aww of wearing a suit made by clothier Shannon Woods, or his pseudo would refer to him as Dapper Shan of Fashion House 47 in Newnan, GA. A clothier whose vision is to ensure the groom and his ensemble are dapper, a task he does not take likely or without reservations. Creator of the Dapper Shan Clothiers, where custom suits meet his extraordinary vision, Shannon’s love of fashion took over the fashion industry in his hometown and, by word of mouth, reached as far away as New York City. Dapper Shan has always had an eye for style; going back to his high school years where you could catch him in a suit and tie then casually in slacks, accompanied by a shirt and tie, one of his mottos has been “ you are your business card.”

Dapper Shan’s unique style is that no two suits are ever the same. As he adds a special touch to make each claim just for you, from embroidered tailored shirts jacket linings to fit each client’s taste, whether it be a photo of a loved one, a unique pattern the clients chooses or a quote; it is unique to the groom on his special day. When I asked Dapper Shan who

his muse was, without hesitation, he said none other than Dapper Dan, the iconic 1980’s haberdashery from Harlem, NY. who, with his sense of creativity and style within the emerging hip-hop community, placed him on the map as a superb clothier.

As an entrepreneur in this industry, it is not for everyone, but it was an easy decision for me. There is a level of freedom that comes with being a boss that you do not get working in corporate America; once I got a taste of this freedom, it was hard for me to go back to corporate America. Dapper Shan states, “It is rare to find people who share your goals and want nothing more than to see YOUR vision come to life without first wondering what they get out of it.” Building his brand has been trying at times, which he attributes solely to building a team with people who are 100% sweat equity-like he is. Before becoming a clothier, Dapper Shan owned Woods & Company photography studio, which provided wedding, high school, and family photography, a very lucrative profession, where he could highlight his ability to have regular meet extraordinary yet again. However, although Woods & Company Photography was lucrative, this was not where his passion lay. With a slight pause, he began to detach himself from photography altogether, referring many of his clients to other photographers, making the transition to clothier easier. “Every once in a while, I will pick up the camera to see if I still have it.” Dapper Shan has several quotes that he lives by, but only one piece of advice to offer anyone looking to be a clothier; “be consistent, be persistent, never give up, and being told NO isn’t

I am excited about this interview and to chat with you. We’re going to talk about you being unapologetic. How about that?

Yes, we are. I appreciate that. First of all, it’s an honor to be here to have you interview me, and I don’t think you’ve ever interviewed me before; I have always brought people for you to interview. So, it’s just something new for me. People write about me, but they never really interview me.

Okay, well, this is going to be fun. All you have to do is relax. We’re just going to have a conversation. So, first of all, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to say that Sharon is now a part of Impact Detroit Magazine. She is the Marketing and Advertising Director for Impact Detroit Magazine. So, we welcome you, and we’re pleased to have you on board. We’re excited and looking forward to what this new year will bring to Impact Detroit Magazine. So, let’s jump in. Let’s talk about you being unapologetic. Tell me why you’re unapologetic.

Because most of my life, I always apologize, I had to come to terms with myself. But, I will say, within the last five years of being 50 plus. I decided in 2022, I was going to do things differently. I’m not going to apologize. Whether I fit you or not, I’m going to be unapologetic about being 50 Plus; it’s just a different mindset, you know, things start changing when you get older, but it hit me in the last 18 months. So, I said, why am I apologizing for everything?

So what made you feel you must apologize for

who you are?

Because of my Business Girlfriends and the sisterhoods that I have developed from talking to so many women from all different walks of life and Nationalities, it made me realize you don’t realize how great you are. But when I listen to other people talk about me, I’m like, You have to understand who you are. I don’t think I understood my worth, value, or what I bring to the table because things come naturally to me. So I said You know what, I’m not apologizing anymore; I’m going to be unapologetic. I’m going to embrace all of my scars. I’m going to embrace my age, and I’m going to assume everything about me. Good, bad, or indifferent, whether people receive it or not.

What brought you to this conclusion that you’re not going to compromise who you are for someone else?

Just being in my community, I realized who I was. I had an epiphany.

Okay, so who is Sharon Steele?

Oh, God, a kid at heart. Sharon Steele is a woman of color that has endured. And if I start crying, it’s because it has been an emotional day. But when I think about who I am and what I have gone through, I am just a woman on an assignment chosen to help people become financially free. I’m a woman that hates injustice. And it doesn’t have to be my injustice. I would fight that injustice like it were mine. I get so emotionally caught up in

53 IMPACT DETROIT MAGAZINE INTERNATIONAL

someone else’s pain that I carry it with them. I’m a person who cares. I love all people. I want us all to succeed and be successful. And sometimes, it’s such an arduous journey. I need to stop apologizing for what God called me to do. It’s time to accept it.

So let’s talk about some of the many hats that you wear.

Yes, ma’am. You know, I began in Direct Marketing. And people talk about Direct Marketing. The first thing everyone says is it’s a pyramid. But a pyramid is one of the most robust structures on Earth. Most businesses are built on a pyramid system, whether you want to believe that or not because it’s somebody at the top and somebody at the bottom. The thing about the pyramid is that everyone eats; you eat at a different level. So I came into Direct Marketing with my dear friend who has passed on; you know him, Greg Leakes; Greg introduced me to a fantastic company here in Metro Detroit called Total Life Changes. And it changed my life, not just the products, but my mindset on things I needed to do and grow.

I made national director in one week, and TLC did an article on me in less than 30 days.

So, I’m launching a new business with a new team, “My Daily Choice.” we are looking to grow by leaps and bounds. I also have a growing community on Facebook called “Business Girlfriends,” that community has a little over 4000 women. I coach them to develop their brand and business. I help get business credit and connect them to marketing, magazines, television, radio, billboards, and direct marketing. So we get exposure and establish funding if their business is not generating income or earning passive income. So I’m for sure a passive coach. So when people say they don’t trust passive income because it’s not attached to your standard nine to five, I say to them; you earn passive income when you sleep and wake up; you’ve made money. What’s not good about that?

Another hat I wear is I’m a mom, and I still have a high schooler; most people my age have all grown children. Also, I’m dating now. So I do a lot. I’m unapologetic about taking on a role with Impact

Detroit Magazine, being the Marketing and Advertising director. I am entitled to be unapologetic. I tell people I’m here for them. So that’s what I’m doing and just honored to be here.

You said something that struck me that I never thought about when you said that the pyramid is one of the most robust structures and that most businesses are built off of pyramids because you have someone at the top and someone at the bottom. I thought that was very insightful. So what is your ultimate goal for your businesses?

My ultimate goal is to have Business Girlfriend

Chapters throughout the United States and globally. My vision is more significant and more extensive than I can imagine. We have those leaders in the women that have accomplished goals to be in those chapters in those cities to help women locally in their town. Those needing help will have somewhere to meet for assistants. We are online as well; I am very social. But also, some people prefer not to meet face to face because of the current state of our world with covid but to have chapters globally would be ideal. I want leaders that can establish other communities within Business Girlfriends. It’s been a process. But I believe the next five years are going to a level beyond what I can see. I am staying consistent and focused and not getting off the vision set before me, you know, because sometimes I get caught up on other people’s ideas and forget what I’m supposed to be doing. But I’m not going to waver.

So talk a little about what you’re planning for the Business Girlfriends.

Yeah, well, unfortunately, COVID changed a lot of things. Thankfully we had our first Annual Business Girlfriend Business Shower in Atlanta, and We had Young Jack from Love and Hip Hop; he had a club called South Beach, and we did a threeday event in Atlanta, which was fantastic. But then COVID hit, and we couldn’t do other events because of the rules and regulations. So we’re planning a 2023 Mansion Event. And because I’m very mindful of COVID, I had covid three times. I am a survivor of COVID. So we’re planning this event with 16 beautiful selected “Business Girlfriends” who get to spend three days inside a mansion. Plus,

they get coached by me. So we get to have that sisterhood which is what “Business Girlfriends” is all about; they get to bring their brand and business for a retreat, plus they get to have a good time. We will have other celebrities and people that will come in to impart into them. So, we’re going to pour into them. So they can take this experience away and say, I had an experience I’ve never had before. I’m not saying they wouldn’t ever stay in a mansion. I know everyone doesn’t desire to live in a mansion. But at least you can stay in one and say I had this experience that I would never have. It’s a retreat in September of 2023 in Metro Detroit. It’s an exclusive location once your spot is secured. We will have more information the closer we get to the event.

Okay, That is fantastic. So let’s talk about family. I’m pretty sure I know the answer to this already, but what is most important to you about your family,

My life is my two trophies; I have a 31-year-old and a 16-year-old. I have a grandson that just turned three. They don’t realize that is what keeps me going. I thank God for each one of their personalities. It helps me to stay balanced and be who God created me to be. I am also embracing my newfound siblings on ancestry.com, which changed my attitude because now I have additional siblings, but my children are my life. Those are my trophies. Those are the gifts that God gave me, and I cherish them. So I’m standing by the children God gave me, and I’m not apologizing for my babies.

Let’s talk about friendships because I know you, and I’ve known you for some time; we met online and started a beautiful sisterhood that I will cherish forever. So when you reached out to me, what made you reach out to me at that time,

First impressions, I Googled you, And when I say I Googled you, I put in magazines in Detroit. And yours was the first to come up. And then, I looked at your magazine; I was impressed with the layout and the presentation. And then I reached out. I am very bold. Most people don’t know this, but I met my friend Greg online. I didn’t know him from a can of paint. Most of my significant relationships have been through social media. So I tell

people, listen; I have met some fantastic people, some sisterhoods and brotherhoods; I would have never phantom I would ever reach. I’m not saying it wouldn’t happen any other way, but social media has helped me grow and meet some wonderful people, and your presentation impressed me. So then we talked, and you were a woman of your word. And you showed up and showed out at our first event. I didn’t even attend because I had other things going on. But my client was very impressed with the whole evening. And then, we went on to further our relationships with Greg and kept in touch. But first impressions are what stood out to me.

Thank you so much for googling Impact. But I want to say this to you; you are one bold sister. You’re fearless because you don’t procrastinate about things; you see something you want to do and make it happen. If it does not work out, there’s no in-between. I think that’s a great trait of an unapologetic person.

Let’s talk about you in your own private space. And what made you feel so good about your last photo shoot? I want you to know they are gorgeous photos. In the moments you were taking those photos, what was going through your mind?

Believe this or not, I’m a natural introvert; no one knows that I’m a quiet person; I say I have an alter ego, but when it comes to business, not so much. I talk a lot. But I’m reticent. So I did the photo shoot to make a statement because I never do photo shoots and needed to balance and make a statement. I felt that the photographer Bre Williams was so patient with me and the photos were so tasteful. I brought my outfits and picked them strategically because I knew what I wanted to look like, and I didn’t want them to be so risky.

I want to show who I am. So at the time, while there was a lot of wine involved. Bre Williams The photographer captured my soul; I felt very relaxed because I would tense up if I thought about it. Bre made me feel calm and comfortable. I want it to show that being 50 Plus, we have our scars, our hips, we are overweight, and things that have happened. We’re not in competition with any of the younger sisters. We embrace who we are. So we

are showing the younger sisters how you can still be graceful and sexy.

So there is one photo, in particular, that is one of my favorites. And in this specific photo, you look so vulnerable. It was like you was like it’s just me. I’m just here, you know, it’s like, I’m just unapologetic.

I have to credit the photographer. She made me better; the atmosphere in her studio was incredible. The pictures were saying you know what, this is my truth. I set a goal for myself, and I’ve done it. And I’m being unapologetic about it. I mean, even for me changing my hair color. I mean, I’ve done a complete transformation. So that photo shoot was something that I will never forget. I have a keepsake book that I can always look back on, and my kids or whoever will say, wow, this was my stamp.

I hear you say it a lot. You’re big on setting goals. Why are goals so important?

Absolutely because, for me, it shows accomplishment. So right now, as I said, I’m fifty-plus. I have goals for when I turn sixty. So instead of trying to run a race quickly, I have some years to pace myself. I just did a launch with my new business, “MY DAILY CHOICE,” and I set a goal in the launch. We have a 12-month plan, and we’re going to look back at the last 12 months at what we have accomplished. So I said short term long terms, but I have a goal for myself. And when I transition to where I want to be, I want to be a consistent high six-figure earner; everyone has their plan; I know what I want. So I set five to 10-year goals. When working with clients one-on-one, I usually have them make six- to 12-month plans. I don’t want to take people too long. I want them to see the manifestation results of what they’re doing. So I say in reality, it should be a two-year plan but let’s set it for six months and see where you are, and we can continue, let’s say, for another six months. So goals are essential. So now we can see what we have achieved in that time.

That’s wonderful. That’s structure.

Sharon, “The Spirit of Detroit” was awarded to you for “Business Girlfriends.” How was that ex-

perience for you?

It was during COVID. But it was terrific. Because what Detroit acknowledge is that I helped these women understand Direct Marketing, Digital Currency, and Business Planning. And that’s something that I want to be able to go throughout the United States and globally, teaching women and men, but mainly my focus is women. So if you don’t have a lot, learning in this space can be life-changing and break the generational curse.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, you’ve heard from the Boss, Ms.Sharon Steele, “Business Girlfriends.”

Thanks for spending some time with Impact Detroit Magazine. I appreciate your wisdom. I’m looking forward to doing more things together and growing.

MY COMPANIONS

I met someone some time ago. Since then, quite frankly, that someone has become quite the companion. Some might call her the bearer of bad news, though sometimes, to the contrary, she’s the hope of endless possibilities. She attributes much to my life - how I perceive my future, my present behavior, and the regrets of my past. At times, she represents the excitement of my ambitions and the sadness of my insecurities at others. Who is she? I call her Memory.

I don’t recall the exact date or time we met; however, it was a remarkable event. I guess you may call it one of those defining moments in life. I wasn’t sure how to take her at first. You see, she eased her way in unexpectantly with a charisma that one can surely appreciate. It was subtle how she made her way deep into my soul, overwhelming me in such a “matter of fact” type way.

During this almost life-long acquaintance, I’ve learned that Memory is quite versatile. She can uplift me spiritually, and in a split second, warn me of impending doom. All entirely based on what she recalls from my past. She can warm my heart; then, in the next instant, turn my whole world dark. Funny how she slowly lowers the shade, so to speak, while she smoothly reminds me of my past indiscretions.

Oh, she can also be quite a dear. I suppose she can be described as one who looks out for my best interests while choosing to forecast my future. Such a “busy-body,” she is. I don’t think she even realizes she always brings drama and “hell risings.” And I can appreciate her concern; I can. However, at times she tends to cause such an “internal” inferno that I can’t get a bearing on just what to do when

From, where did she come? Who knows? I presume she doesn’t live very far from me; however, I can’t rec-

ollect hearing her mention the street or even the town in which she resides. She can arrive quickly, though; so, it must not be very far. I don’t know whether she takes an Uber or the bus, possibly the train. It’s funny how I never seem to catch her coming or going. All I know is she shows up uninvited and can be rather rude when she does. She bursts in, and I can’t get her out of my space to save me!

For quite some time now, I have secretly worked on ways to disarm her. I’ve even tried to think of ways to avoid her. You know, pretend as if I’m not home. However, I haven’t had much luck. She can show up at the most inopportune moments - moments in which I want to be left alone.

I can’t quite seem to put two and two together to figure out just when she might show up. But, when she does, I either get blessed by her presence or regret I ever met her.

I want to be able to put up my guard. But I kind of feel that it is destined that she haunts me. I feel deep within me that I can do something to make her more positive and not ever bring up “bad” times. However, I can’t seem to figure out the way. I believe it would mean that I would have to travel back through time or something.

Sometimes when my mind is going through a whirlwind of thoughts, I just want to say: “Memory, que sera, sera (whatever will be, will be).” However, being the kind-natured soul I am, I continually take in all that she dishes out and keep that hole in my face shut tight. She ruffles feathers; however, I remind myself that feathers should be ruffled to shake out the particles and the dust every once in a while.

Now, please don’t allow me to give the impression that

MY COMPANIONS

Memory’s visits always leave me unhappy, Though I must say, the happy ones are far and in between. She, on some occasions, left me with enthusiasm and a renewed zeal for life, her presence reminding me that there is so much that life still has to offer. It’s incredible how she helps me recall those happy occasions in which I should be proud. You know, those times that remind us that the inner power gifted within us is still there, and it’s working perfectly fine.

Towards the end of this writing, I began to think of how much my past Memory brings up. And, as much as I can appreciate her recollections, I believe that most of them should be thrown out. Especially the bad stuff. This thought also reminded me that maybe most of the bad things she brings up about my past shouldn’t affect the present anyway. You know, whatever happens now should be left all to chance.

You know what? This brings to mind another companion - one worth mentioning here. Allow me to tell you about her.

Well, first and foremost, she’s not quite the companion as Memory. I mean, she doesn’t show up as often. However, I do believe that I might prefer her company over Memory’s any day.

First off, she is not as pesky as you know who; and she never arrives at an awkward moment. She always seems to show up when it is time. This companion doesn’t do any forewarning like Memory, either; she professes no doomed premonitions. When she shows up, it always seems to be at the perfect time and right on time.

Don’t’ get me wrong; I believe she can act just like Memory; she doesn’t. For the most part, she keeps her peace and allows my fate to evolve into just that, my

destiny. Her name? I call her Destiny.

I like it when Destiny shows up. Because, as I mentioned, she always seems to show up just when it’s time – in “due” time. There is no other time in which she should have arrived; but, at that particular moment. And I feel that when Destiny graces my presence, it is always at the right time.

She brings satisfaction – the kind that brings life full circle.

I know you are wondering just what I might do about the relationship between myself and Memory. Well, you know I can’t just dump her and never hear from her again. However, a bit of advice from Destiny is worth taking heed. Destiny tells me that most of the stuff that Memory brings up (especially the bad stuff) should be used for “Information Purposes Only,” anyway. She (Destiny) constantly reassures me that her presence and her presence alone should be the visits that sum all things’ - kill any doubts.

And you know what? I agree! I should keep both as companions, however, in their respective places. I figure I can accept Memory to set the pace for my present situation and use Destiny to bring it all together in the end. Both are indeed a helpful pair. I’ll even go as far as to say, each carries her weight - assuring that I absorb each lesson and use both of their knowledge accordingly.

Yes, my companions serve me well. So, well that I unselfishly share them both. I have invited each, Memory and Destiny, to pay a visit to each of you.
