Sharing Indigenous culture in creative ways. Indijiarts uses various forms of artistic expression to share Indigenous culture in a way that is engaging, informative, memorable and fun. Delivered with passion by well-known and gifted Aboriginal creative, Josie Alec, the business aims to achieve greater cultural understanding within the broader community.
About Indijiarts Indijiarts is a 100% Aboriginal owned and operated family business. Based in Karratha, it services the Pilbara region, and has the ability to operate anywhere in Australia. Established in 2013 by Josie Alec, the inspiration for the business followed an opportunity by the former Shire of Roebourne to be involved with an Indigenous pavilion at the Royal Show. The call was for someone who could paint, cook and sing. Josie fit the bill perfectly. The experience combined her passion for sharing her culture, her teaching qualifications and her amazing, creative talents. It also highlighted the demand for real, Indigenous experiences from a business perspective. Indijiarts is developing a strong presence in the local community – regularly invited to a variety of arts, culture and corporate events. Indijiarts’ vision is to share Indigenous culture in creative and engaging ways with the broader community.

Family and Culture Josie considers her culture to be very precious. It’s who she is, where she’s come from, and what drives her. Josie was one of the last stolen generation taken out of Roebourne, and grew up with a non-indigenous family in Perth. Her life story is about walking in two cultures, overcoming the challenges along the way, and managing to thrive. ‘My culture has always been there – it’s not something that can ever be taken away. My past, and everything I’ve been through, has led me back to my roots. To law and culture, to my mum, to old people, and to country.’ Josie credits her amazing gifts to her family, especially her late mother, who was consulted by her people as a healer.

Cultural Creativity
Indijiarts gives people the opportunity to learn about local, Indigenous culture first hand. It allows non-indigenous people to look beyond what they can see, and realise there is more to discover about Indigenous people, and where they come from. Indijiarts aims to bring people to a deeper understanding of the complexities of Aboriginal culture, teaching anyone who wants to learn. With understanding comes acceptance. Our vision is for Indijiarts to contribute to reconciliation, and inspire people to go on to educate others.
