ABOUT J.Djiagween FREIGHT SERVICES

J.Djiagween Freight Services is a 100% Aboriginal owned and operated business based in Broome, Western Australia.

Newly established, the strength of the business is the experience and proven capability of founder, June Djiagween. With 25 years experience in the mining and resources industry, June is a skilled boilermaker, with extensive skills in maintaining the structural, mechanical and engineering integrity of heavy equipment. J.Djiagween Freight Services has the capacity to meet a range of local industry freighting requirements in Broome, and throughout the Pilbara region.

We are committed to proving our capability and strengthening our reputation as a reliable, high quality freighting service provider.

ABOUT June Djiagween June is proud of her cultural ancestry, descending from the Yawuru peoples in the Kimberley, and the Ngarluma peoples in the Pilbara. Having lived in the North West all her life, her connection to the country and her people is strong.

June started working in the mining industry in 1992, after completing her apprenticeship as a Boilermaker/ First Class Welder with Goldsworthy Mining on Finucane Island. An ‘energetic tomboy’, she enjoyed the very hot and heavy work, and knew she had made the right career choice. She subsequently completed an ‘Engineering Tradesperson (Fabrication)’ apprenticeship with Hamersley Iron.

‘I love designing and creating. I love being challenged. And I love solving problems.’

AWARDS

In 1998, June was officially recognised as Australia’s first Aboriginal female boilermaker. In the same year, she won the Tradeswoman of Australia Award, the National Apprentice Aboriginal NAIDOC Award, and was Runner-Up National Indigenous Apprentice of Australia. June continues to inspire young Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. She is generous with her time, and is an active role model in her community.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

J.Djiagween Freight Services is not just a business. It’s a vehicle for helping local Indigenous people, by providing training, mentoring, and meaningful employment. June has visited probably every school in the Pilbara region, speaking to students, as well as participants of various outreach services. Her message is one of hope and encouragement, and draws on her personal experience of having overcome challenges in her life.

June quickly establishes a connection with people, as they can relate to her story.

The impact of her efforts is far-reaching and personally satisfying. In some cases years later, several young men and women have thanked her for being the ‘turning point’ in their lives. Now qualified tradespeople, they regard June as their inspiration. Literacy and education are two issues that are close to her heart.

‘If you can’t read and write properly, you need to persist – no matter how much of a struggle it is.’

‘Keep training, keep learning and keep reaching for your goals. Never give up on your dreams. If you keep on trying, you will get there.’ 100% Aboriginal-owned and operated, we aim to empower local Indigenous people in their everyday lives, and help them to succeed in business.
