publisher’s note fan fare We kick off our fall issue with an interview with St. Louis Ram’s punter, Donnie Jones, in our cover story (page 10) by sportswriter Ron Clements. Clements also discusses Ram’s current winning streak with Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo and rookie quarterback Sam Bradford (page 13). It’s been a great season so far to be a Ram’s fan and we wish them continued success. Alexander M. Brown, a big fan of the Dave Glover Show, examines the “Serious Side of Funny Business” in his interview with the radio personality celebrating the tenth anniversary of his show (page 50). And fans of “Queen of Rock n’ Roll” Katy Kruze won’t want to miss our interview with her (page 78). I’m a huge fan of this season’s fall fashion and Macy’s delivers with on-trend looks in our spread (page 28). A special thanks to Angela Quinn from Spa WingHaven and to Shirley Vejvoda and Janet Aubuchon from Macy's Mid Rivers for making it all happen. Fall is the perfect time to visit Missouri’s wineries, and we reviewed Missouri's newest, Cedar Lake Cellars (page 16), and the award-winning Blumenhof Vineyards and Winery (page 18). Experience Chef Henry Miller's creations at Kitaro Bistro of Japan through our restaurant review (page 22). You'll want to play the challenging courses of Woods Fort Country Club (page 24) and Eagle's Bluff Golf Course (page 18) after reading our golf course reviews. Our staff toured some of the area's best assisted living and independent living facilities to share their offerings (page 80) and brought you a section of portraits and profiles of local people who are at the top of their game (page 62). We examine the benefits of an energy saving spray polyurethane foam roof coating system (page 56) and geothermal heating and cooling system (page 60) in our green living section. We feature the architecture firm Phoenix Design Group, Inc. (page 76) and focus on what the attorneys of Flynn and Davenport like to do outside the office (page 70). Our travel section features destinations both inside the country and overseas. Dan Neill shares his picturesque trip to Glacier National Park in Montana (page 72) and Diane Picht shares destinations in Ireland you won't want to miss. Thank you to our staff, contributors, advertisers and readers for making this our biggest issue yet. Enjoy!

Cedar Lake Cellars

Winery Opens at Cedar Lake Farm Near Wright City

L

ocated in the heart of Warren County amidst ninety five picturesque acres of the destination event venue Cedar Lake Farm, is the latest creation of owner and accomplished businessman Carl Bolm. Cedar Lake Cellars is Missouri’s newest winery experience offering a spectacular array of handcrafted quality wines with its namesake from Missouri and California. When Carl bought the Shreckengast farm and started restoring the 1930’s buildings in 2002 he envisioned Cedar Lake Farm becoming a premier event venue of St. Louis. The opening of Cedar Lake Cellars is the beginning of the second act of an ongoing saga that began with the charming Big Red Barn and the comforting ambiance of surrounding acreage. This meticulously renovated tri-level barn houses a long dining room with hand built tables, chairs, cabinets and a stone hearth that harks back to the glory days of its early 20th century origin; this barn is unlike any you have seen or experienced. With the addition of the winery, Cedar Lake is now the ideal destination for lunch or dinner in the country as well as large corporate gatherings or private events. Surrounded by two serene lakes, one dissected by an expansive wooden bridge that leads to a gorgeous waterfall and a firepit, and a new vineyard of Norton, the Cellar boasts a spectacular tasting room. The forty foot granite tasting bar, the breathtaking wine rack and custom tables made of reclaimed wood and plush chairs provide seating for hundreds. Cedar Lake Cellar offers an outstanding variety from highly regarded wine regions from around the world including Napa, Italy, New Zealand, Chile and more. “Our vignoles,

16 I IMPULSE I Fall 2010

sweet reds, pink blush, pinot noir, pinot grigio, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and chardonnay are hand-crafted locally in the spirit of Missouri wine country. French-American hybrid and native grapes are blended for superb balance, taste and aroma,” said Scott Sutter, the Cellar’s wine consultant. As an alternative to wine try their fine selection of micro-brewed beers. Enjoy top name entertainers year round in their covered pavilion. Experience Executive Chef Philip Day’s perfect food pairings, specialties and a full menu of appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts in the incredible setting of the Cellar’s Wine Country Cafe. Special Wine Dinners are available by reservation only. Enjoy your meal inside in the hearth room, outside under the covered patio or opt for a romantic picnic by the lake with a refreshing picnic basket prepared to your taste. It is a spectacular setting for weddings, engagements, as well as honeymoons. The atmosphere is one of relaxed and classic elegance, unique to Missouri Wine Country. Host you corporate event here. Get away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a tranquil environment where you and your staff can recharge and reconnect. Team building activities, meetings, seminars, and corporate retreats are enjoyed rather than endured. You can book your private event any day of the week. Celebrating a birthday, anniversary, wedding, graduation and a banquet, the catering staff can tailor a variety of menus to exceed your expectations and ensure you and your guests have a great experience. Both Cedar Lake Farm and the Cellar lead the industry in maintaining sustainable practices that include recycling receptacles, proper waste disposal signage, use of recycled lake water for irrigation of the vineyard and

grounds, efficient Lutron lighting system with occupancy sensors, and above all, building of the Big Red Barn using 90% original materials and reclaimed barn wood from barns around the area. Located between west Hwy 70 and Hwy 40, only thirty minutes from St. Louis, Cedar Lake Farm and Cellars is far enough to get away yet close enough to create a special day Cedar Lake is cosmopolitan country at its finest. Cellar is open to public Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 10 am to 9 pm. To book your next fabulous party contact Michelle Tinker at mtinker@ cedarlakecelllars.com or call 636-745-9500. Blumenhof Vineyards & Winery Nestled along Highway 94 in the historic village of Dutzow (Missouri’s oldest German settlement) is one of the most awarded of all Missouri wineries, Blumenhof Winery. Established in 1987 Blumenhof Winery and Vineyard is operated today by second and third generation family. Dedicated to producing an unsurpassed selection of Missouri-grown wines, Blumenhof’s wines have won scores of awards at prominent national and international wine competitions. Blumenhof takes its name from the Blumenberg family’s ancestral farm in northwestern Germany. Blumenhof, which means Court of Flowers, is a perfect name for this lovely winery. Blumenhof’s wine list includes their perennial award winners like the Chambourcin, Chardonel, Cynthiana, Rayon d’Or, Seyval, Vidal and Vignoles. This year was banner year for their two reds Chambourcin and Original Cyn and their dry white Seyval; all three winning Best Of gold medals at Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition. Their amazingly flavored dry rose, 2008 Winegarden Rose was awarded Silver Medal at the 2009 Mid-American Wine Competition. The ever popular semi-dry white wines include the 2009 Rayon d’Or, the new vintage 2009 Femme Osage, and the 2008 Missouri Weinland which received Gold Medals this year at both the Taster’s Guild International Judging and the LA International Wine & Spirits Competition. Blumenhof’s semi-sweets include Katy’s Blush, a 2009 Vignoles, La Charrette, a Silver Medal winner Devil’s Den Red, and their 2008 Valvin Muscat which received a Gold Medal at the 2009 Pacific Rim International Wine Competition. In the winery’s two beautiful vineyards in Dutzow and Treloar, owner Mark Blumenberg grows seven acres of Vidal, three acres of Chambourcin, and two acres of Cynthiana. Blumenhof’s German heritage is apparent in more than their 18 I IMPULSE I Fall 2010

wines and is reflected in the architecture and warm friendly ambiance. With the winery open all year round and the wine garden hosting bands every weekend like Erin Bode, Dick & Jane, Pennsylvania Slim Blues, the fabulous wine and the beautiful music provides unparalleled entertainment spring, summer, and fall. Erin Bode, with her enchantingly melodious voice is one of the biggest acts in St. Louis and has been playing at Blumenhof for nearly five years. “Erin is a sweetheart. She loves being very close to the crowd and the crowd loves her in our wine garden.” stated Mark. Blumen means flowers in German; Mark would like to invite everyone to stop in and smell the flowers, and enjoy their world-class wines. Located in Missouri Wine Country, they are minutes north of Washington, Missouri, on the north side of the Missouri River, at 13699 South Highway 94. They are open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years day. To find out what’s happening at Blumenhof every week, visit www.blumenhof.com or call 800419-2245. You can also find most Blumenhof varietals at Missouri Wine and Gift located at the Preferred Outlet Mall in Warrenton. ■

GRAPE-GROWING & WINE-MAKING FROM BLUMENHOF VINEYARDS & WINERY - IN DUTZOW, MISSOURI. A Year ‘Round Exposé’ for the Wine Enthusiast.

Mark Blumenberg, owner of Blumenhof Vineyards, checks the volume of wine left to bottle in the 725 gal. stainless tank in August.

Whether you have a few grapevines in your backyard or you have acres and acres of grape-producing vines, knowing when and how to harvest the grapes is important. If the grapes are not ready or the harvest is not done correctly, the crop can be a failure. Grapes must be mature before they can be harvested because they will not mature any further after being removed from the vine. Grapes generally mature from late August to late October, depending on the variety of the grapes. Watch for color changes such as green to blue or red to white and seed color changes from green to brown. Grapes will reach full size and also become sweet. The only way to test this is to taste them. After determining that the grapes are mature and ready, weather cooperating, it is time to harvest. Harvesting is done by hand or with machinery. The resulting juice is then chilled to around 40º F and stored in stainless steel fermentation tanks with built in cooling jackets to control heat generated during fermentation. Fermentation takes 2-4 weeks. Aiding fermentation is either ambient yeasts which are naturally present in wine cellars and on the grapes themselves or cultured yeast which are specifically isolated and cultured for this purpose. In wine-making the temperature and speed of fermentation is an important consideration as well as the levels of oxygen present in the must at the start of the fermentation. Based on temperature, different juices will ferment at different times. When fermentation is finished and the wine is stable with enough sulfites (SO2) added to prevent oxidation or spoiling; add fining agents to clear the wine of suspended particle. The last step in winemaking is filling and corking your bottles and few things are more important to the shelf life of your wine than how it is handled at this point. Commercial bottling machines inject nitrogen into the bottle just prior to filling and corking them to evacuate the bottle of any oxygen. When bottling at home and if you are using re-used wine bottles, soak off the label, scrub them well and siphon the wine into them. To help cork them easily, steam the corks for 3-5 minute. Leave bottles upright for 3-5 days; then store them on their side at 55º F for six months for white wine and up to a year for red wine before sampling. Impulse Magazine in affiliation with Blumenhof Winery will bring our readers year ‘round “Grape-Growing & Wine Making” instruction for the interested and amateur Wine Culturists. If you have any fitting questions, you can direct them to Impulse Magazine, and we will ask the expert and report on them in our next installment.

woods Fort golf course was cut out of winding woods and rolling hills. It has some large, forgiving fairways and nice size greens. Many improvements have occurred in the last two years to any already beautiful course layout. The course is one of the most scenic and challenging courses in Missouri. The facilities at Woods Fort can accommodate tournaments of any size. There is a newly constructed pavilion and BBQ area just outside the pro shop. Hole number 17 is a signature hole. The par 4 hole is a slight dogleg to the right with a lake surrounding the front and west side of the green. As you face the green for your second shot, you face a wall of stacked boulders to an elevated green with mounds in the rear that forces you to select the proper club. It is holes like this one that makes this course a challenging, yet friendly in many aspects. Special pricing for tournaments and outings combined with the convenient accommodations make this a perfect venue to host your next tournament. The facility offers lessons to all levels of golfers and a newly designed range to sharpen your game. If you wish to inquire about lessons, head golf professional Brian Crawford is always available to answer your questions or schedule a lesson. Woods Fort has been host to some popular tour events and regularly hosts high school tournaments and the Special Olympics events. The ownership and management of Woods Fort Golf Course invites you to come play and visit their facility. They are there to make your day as pleasant as possible.

The common factor in this fall’s hottest trends are an attention to detail. Luxe materials are reigning supreme, as well as military inspired details, ruffled detailing, feminine florals, and sequins for day and night. Leather and exotic furs (please be kind, use faux) are great for layering this season. Jeggings, or jean leggings, are another must-have this year. Pair them with tunic tops, vests or cropped jackets, and you’ll have an ensemble that makes a statement.

Red hair color is one of the most coveted of all hair colors, despite the fact that less than 4 % of the world’s population is naturally redheaded. If you aren’t naturally gifted with a fiery hue and want to join the rank of a redhead by dying your hair at home, avoid the temptation; it’s time you make an appointment with your trusted hair salon. It’s the only way to prevent a complete hair color disaster, because your stylist will ensure a certain hue will compliment you and perform a ‘strand test’ before coloring. Whether it’s muted shade or a piercing and eyepopping one, choosing the right red hues might seem like a difficult task but your skin tone can provide valuable insight when it comes to becoming a perfect redhead. As a general rule, women who have a fair complexion should choose light shades of red like ginger, strawberry blonde or light copper shades; those with medium skin tone should choose medium shades of copper or auburn while those who have a darker skin tone can use darker hues such as burgundy or a violet based color. red shades are hyper-popular especially among women eager to try the must have hues of the season. Regardless of the length of your hair, you will have the privilege to pick the right color from an infinite palette of shades. In order to have the desired effect make sure you ask the help of a pro hair stylist especially if you are at the beginning of your hair coloring career. Vamp up your look and choose a style and hue that suits your personality. Whether you adopt a block-colored look or like to experiment with the multi-tonal design, the point is to plan your makeover beforehand. Want to kill two birds with one stone? Then juggle with various layers and proportions. Apply the darker tone to the under layers and the lighter to the top in order to boost the volume of your hair and create the illusion of big hair. It’s important to know that red color needs permanent maintenance, as it is the most sensitive of all. Sun exposure, excessive washing and other external factor can quickly make this color fade without an intensive care routine. Even those who naturally have red hair struggle with keeping their color from fading. Natural red hair has a different structure from the other types of hair, making redheads more prone to hair thinning. An essential step in maintaining the fiery red look is using a shampoo with color enhancers as well as heat protective products and styling tools. An experienced hair stylist will be able to make the best recommendations when it comes to the best products for this hair color. The greatest advantages of red hair is that everyone has a chance to find the right color that suits their skin tone and face shape. Add some sizzle to your long, mid or short crop and make sure you keep an eye on regular touch ups in order to banish beauty flaws and mask the growing roots. To ensure the best results visit a hair pro to grant you some radiant red tresses.

AIR CARE

Color That Speaks Louder than Words By: Tina Parrish, Luminesce Salon What does your color say? If someone would look at your hair color does it say anything about you, about your lifestyle? When was the last time someone complemented you on your color? Well, if it has been a long time a change may be in order. What Does Your Color Say About You? Hair color was designed for two reasons: vanity (to disguise the ageing process), and secondly it is used as a way to express yourself. So if you are not just covering grey, what is your hair color saying? Are you mysterious or bold; does your color whisper or scream; or does it look like every other person you pass in the shopping aisle? If this is the case, a change is really in order. Fall Trends Seasonal changes make the most sense and are the safest ABSOLUTELY

transition for most of us. With that being said, lets talk about the trends for this fall. If you browse the magazine and the runways you will see some interesting transitions happening. For years we have been reinventing ways to highlight to low light and now color is trending back to solids. This really makes sense because fashion always goes from one extreme to another. Looking at fashion now and what eras different trends are stemming from you are seeing 30’s and 40’s hats, gloves, and soft, romantic hair. Well, look at the color during that time frame. We didn’t have the hair color technology we have today, it was all about one color. Highlighting didn’t come until later in the game.

However, this does separate the men from the boys; just ask your stylist how is my color placement different from your last clients? If nothing else it will let them know that you know the difference in cookie cutter color and something that was designed for them. Couture, because, yes, that is what you should be to your stylist: one-of-a-kind and definitely “worth It.”

This isn’t saying that currently dimension is out, some slight shade and depth variations are still happening. However, they are being balanced and placed with a purpose. Enhancing your color, like changing the tone: if you are ash blonde, than enhance it to a warm blonde. Glosses and Glazes Glosses and Glazes are very much a big part of trend color and a great alternative to a more permanent color. Modern Brides

By: Angie, The Wedding Shoppe, Photo by Lisa Nikole Photography Brides today are influenced by the past. Old Hollywood looks with a modern twist is hotter than ever. These styles are of soft ivory and creamy whites, and pale golds and beige are popular for the fall and evening weddings. Wedding gowns are fitted with drop waist, made of soft shimmer satin or stretch satin providing a sleek silhouette reminiscent of the 40’s and higher waist and fuller skirts made of satin or taffeta draped in tulle or chiffon with a 50’s flair, but the bride of today prefers favor strapless gowns instead of the covered shoulders of the past. 2011 brides are choosing gowns with lower backs and more lace, and trains pour into gorgeous balloon hems. Embellishments are breath-taking jewels and many encircle empire waists. Brides like putting their personal touch on their weddings, always looking for a way to make their wedding unique and yet traditional. One of the ways is with color by dying their shoes or slips to match wedding décor or blue for “something blue” is a surprise pop of color. Vintage-style netting over the face in place of veil, or hair adorned with feathers and handmade flowers. Popular colors of the upcoming season are grays mixed with yellow or shades of blue and purple. Grooms are sporting suits of light grey and black ties or tuxes with bow ties and cummerbunds and one button coats and shinny black shoes. This look, again, is an old Hollywood trend.

Location is everything; not all brides want the traditional wedding and reception site. Gardens, vineyards, barns, old buildings with character, even back yards. In the search to make their wedding their own creativity is essential. Receptions are fun with choreographed first dances and are recorded and placed on the internet. Some brides are changing into a second dress to dance the night away in. ■

Big & Bold Jewelry

Trends for 2010-2011

will stay an important color for fall/winter, with orchid, yellow, a purplish blue and jade green as accent colors.

By: Paula Nakajima, Three Monkeys Beadery Photo by Alexander M. Brown Twice each year I check a variety of sources to see what the new color and jewelry trends for the upcoming seasons are. This autumn/winter the colors are dramatic, saturated jewel tones with soft neutrals for contrast. Some of the hot neutrals are Hematite that not quite black, gunmetal blue gray color, Chocolate bronze and Topiary Green. Light changing and iridescent finishes on jewel tone beads are very popular.

The upcoming jewelry trends are all about color, dye, tint, hue and finishes. Embellishments are complex; the curious clash of vintage and futuristic, the combination of precise pattern and texture. Beads and finishes that play with light and shine, special effects applied to glass and stone, wood and metals allow you to play with design and materials. Merging and mixing the natural and industrial in design and material brings to life our true world relationship with Urban and Rural, natural and manmade. Using natural materials with material inspired by high tech and military industry in graphic patterns to express embracing the small imperfections in life, adding interest and texture to your style. For those special occasions when luxury and elegance is the order of the day (or night), only the best in material and finish is acceptable. Hard bright crystals, natural or manmade, combined with the soft glow of natural stone or pearls in deep saturated colors or traditional neutrals set the accent for your total look. Fall/Winter 2010 According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute and the head of the Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training, buyers may want to look to the past, present and future to get a sense of coming color trends. “The big picture theme is a Mosaic of Color and Style,” she says. “This reflects cultural, universal time frames and seemingly disconnected elements. Though new technologies continue to reinvent the future, we may notice some things have a vaguely nostalgic feeling.” According to Leatrice Eiseman, Brown will stay a very important color for fall/winter, with orchid, yellow, a purplish blue and jade green as accent colors. Included in the mix for this fall/winter are; metallic, shimmery gold, rich reds, vibrant blues and purples conveying modernized nostalgia. The focus will be more on neutrals, grey, gunmetal and cream. Ochre, brown and black are accented with topiary greens and lipstick red. The blues, irises

Home Builders Association of St. Louis and Eastern Missouri By Sean Flower, 2010 President, Home Builders Association of St. Louis & Eastern Missouri

When you see the Homebuilders Association of St. Louis & astern Missouri (HBA) logoin use by a business, what should you assume? A safe assumption is that active HBA members have ha d extensive opportunities to learn the latest about industry trends, customer service, how to design new communities and new homes that will best meet the consumer’s needs and how to run a successful business. This is because the HBA might be thought of as sort of an Industry-specific educational institution for higher learning. Membership dues are charged to those who choose to join. Those dues might be thought of as a sort of educational tuition being paid by the builder or other contractor. Being an HBA member means that a home builder or remodeler has made the decision to identify with the official not-for-profit association representing the home building industry.

That is a good sign, for the consumer working with an HBA member. Often it is the least informed, least trained least innovative, least financially stable contractors who make the choice not to join the HBA. The HBA provides many services to its members. Among those services are: Educational Seminars A steady stream of classes on customer service; land use and home construction environmental regulations; home design and energy efficiency trends; green hone building techniques; and even “in-the-field” classes such as proper techniques for finishing concrete flatwork; and much more. Every aspect imaginable in home building is available through educational training with the local NBA and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHS). Information There is a constant flow of information both from the local HBA and NAHB. A local HBA member automatically becomes an NAHB member too. Specialty publications of an kinds, as well as technical help centers; provide HBA members with all of the latest available information intended to help them provide technically superior homes that deliver good value for the money. Government Contact It is important to efficiently wade through government bureaucracies and their rules and regulations involving home building and remodeling. This helps to minimize unnecessary

costs and delays that ultimately could be problems for the buyer. The HBA and NAHB work to facilitate dialogue with governments throughout the St. Louis region, in the state capitol in Jefferson City and in Washington, D.C. to help keep housing affordable and housing policies favorable for home buyers. Together, these HBA services mean that builders and others who belong to the HBA are exposed to a wide variety of tools, technology and technique which can be of great value to the homebuyer. And the HBA is more than just home builders. Leading remodeling companies in the St. Louis region also belong to the HBA and are classified as builder members. There also are associate members of the HBA which include many lumber suppliers, building products suppliers and many more that provide services such as painting, electrical, plumbing, roofing and concrete. Many professional businesses such as law firms, banks, engineers and architects also are associate members. So, next time you are looking at a newly-built home with all the excitement that goes along with it, look also for the MBA logo. Ask if the builder is an NSA member, It is yet another of the many reasons to make a decision that will be right for you and your future. You can search for BRA builders and new homes by visiting www.stthba.com. ■

Roof Coating System Spray Polyurethane Foam is an eco-friendly roofing system that provides a waterproof seal, insulation barrier and sun-reflecting surface.

R

&A Contracting, a St. Louis company, has brought the cutting edge of today’s roofing solutions to the area with a revolutionary eco-friendly roofing system utilizing Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF). The closed cell foam technology provides a seamless watertight seal and insulation barrier, while the top coatings reflect the sun’s energy thus significantly cutting energy consumption. In most applications, the return on investment with energy savings alone can by less than six years.

MAKE GREEN The top coatings are Energy Star approved and reflect over 80% of the sun’s energy. The “R” value of the foam (insulating property) is the highest of any roofing system on the market at up to 7 per inch applied. Most roofs have 1 ½ inches applied, giving it an additional “R” value of approximately 10. Texas A & M, which used 8,000,000 square feet of SPF on hundreds of their buildings in the last 22 years calculates that the energy savings will pay for the roof in four and a half years. Ford Motor Company which also uses the same system estimates their SPF roofing saves them $464,000.00 per year. Since 2007, in Iraq alone, the U.S. Army has used SPF to insulate over 5.5 million square feet of tent and temporary structure roofs. The payoff was immediate & the benefits extraordinary with incredible cost differential by using SPF instead of conventional roofing materials. Last year, the Army used SPF to coat 500 to 600 tents and temporary structures in Afghanistan. There was 85% to 90% reduction in power usage within the year. The Army wanted to reduce the number of trucks delivering fuel to feed the generators supplying power to the air conditioning units that ran 24/7. With outside temperatures near 140° F, the un-insulated tent fabric was about 138° F and inside the tents was around 100° F, the A/C’s ran constantly. Once the spray foam was applied, the

56 I Fall 2010 56 II IMPULSE IMPULSE I Fall 2010

inside temperature stayed around 70° F and when cooled, it stayed that way without constant A/C thus increasing the life expectancy of the cooling units. A 50,000 square foot metal roof has about 40,000 screws causing ‘thermal shorts’ & decreasing insulation efficiency by roughly 38%. This issue is eliminated with SPF’s seamless property. WATERTIGHT SPF is made of billions of minute closed cells expanding approximately 30 times during initial application, thereby sealing unseen cracks. It seals HVAC units, parapet caps, pitch pockets, and is ideal for flat roofs with multiple protrusions thus eliminating joints where the majority of leaks occur. SPF roofing can also eliminate ‘ponding water’ effect by adding an increased thickness of polyurethane foam in low areas and sloping the roof to allow water to drain efficiently which also reduces load factor due to accumulation. With no deck penetrations, its ability to coat flashings and any type of roof substrate by conforming to irregular shapes, SPF makes for a roof with amazing waterproofing ability. National Roofing Foundation surveyed 140 SPF roofs all across the nation that were at least 12 years old. The roofs had less than 1% moisture content. Only 3 owners reported leaks. Texas Instruments surveyed twenty roofs covering some

3,000,000 square feet. They stated, "Not a single incidence of leaking occurred." ROOF RESTORATION vs. TEAR-OFF AND REPLACE Restorations can usually be performed without tear off and disposal of the old roof, thus not adding to the landfills. While sprayed polyurethane foam is very light weight (approximately 10 oz. per square foot) and will not pack down or sag, it adds to the rigidity of the roof structure and reduces surface stress due to limited expansion and contraction of the roof. Because of the indefinite life expectancy with maintenance and recoats, normally a roof restoration can be expensed in the current tax year versus a new roof being capitalized, spreading out the costs over many years. LONGEVITY AND LOW MAINTENANCE COSTS In addition to substantially lowering cooling and heating costs and having the lowest applied costs, it offers the lowest ongoing maintenance costs due to its outstanding durability. In the event the foam becomes damaged, a simple caulk gun and tube of polyurethane caulk is all that is generally needed for the repair. SPF is a sustainable roofing system, which means the foam does not need to be replaced; regular re-coating and spot maintenance can help keep the roof under constant warranty from the installers thus bringing peace of mind to a commercial facility owner. APPLICATIONS Use of SPF is almost universal for all flat roofs. Whether it’s a new construction or an existing building SPF roofing offers one of the best solutions to all roofing applications. Other types of roofs can be restored and a reflective coating applied which will also extend the life of the roof and reduce the temperature. This includes metal, single ply and asphalt restorations.

Geothermal Heating & Cooling

Y

our own backyard has the potential to be an energy source for heating and cooling comfort. Outdoor air temperatures fluctuate throughout the year with the changing seasons. In contrast, ground temperatures about four to six feet below the Earth’s surface remain relatively moderate and constant all year. That’s because the Earth absorbs 47% of all the heat energy that reaches its surface from the sun. A geothermal system circulates a water-based solution through a buried loop system to take advantage of these constant temperatures. A single piece of equipment has the ability to heat and cool your home, while providing some or all of your home’s hot water as well. Geothermal systems can save you 30% to 70% on your monthly utility bills. According to the EPA, Geothermal systems are the most energy efficient, environmentally clean and cost-effective space conditioning systems available today.

To learn how you can save on your energy bill, call Gary Scott or Billy Woolf, owners of Schraer Heating & Air Conditioning. Established in 1954 and located in Warrenton, Schraer is a full line Lennox and Geo Comfort dealer and has been providing a wide array of services including furnace repair for both electric & gas (natural and

LP), oil, boilers, air conditioner repair, heat pump repair, installation of conventional and geothermal systems, replacement and new construction, duct cleaning, sheet metal fabrication, HVAC & refrigeration comfort. Call 636-456-3435 or on the web at www.schraerheating.com

Live Comfortably.

Installing a Geothermal system has some compelling advantages over other systems: -Superior comfort year round -Payback from energy savings (cash model) -Positive cash flow from energy savings (financed model) -Most energy efficient system available -Cleanest way possible to heat, no greenhouse gases -Greenest system, no fossil fuels burned -Quieter system-no noisy outdoor condenser - Architecturally aesthetic -Safer: no flame or chimney required and no volatile odors- no fill up or delay In addition to the above mentioned reasons, the longevity and durability of Geothermal system is much greater than conventional systems. Though Geothermal systems require a higher initial investment than other systems due to the installation of the earth loop, most homeowners are eligible for a 30% tax credit, and the system cost is typically recovered by energy savings payback in a few short years. Members of local electric coops can save even more by availing substantial residential heat pump rebates where available. So, if you’re building a new home or replacing your existing furnace or air conditioner, you owe it to yourself to check out the economics of the clean, renewable energy used in geothermal heating and cooling.

Summer Cool Glacier National Park, Montana

on everyone’s mind upon our return. I’ll get to that in a minute. We began the 1,850 mile trek on Saturday, July 10. Tuesday, July 13, around noon, we entered Glacier Park. After settling in, we took a drive along the Going-to-the-Sun Road, which bisects the park west to east for 53 miles. It crosses the Continental Divide at Logan’s Pass (an altitude over 6,600 feet). There,

72 I IMPULSE I Fall 2010

we discovered we had not only travelled to another state, but another season as well. Winter! The 38° temperature was complemented with a 40 MPH wind. Wind-chill factor in July? About 20°, I’d say. And the grounds were covered with one-to-three feet of snow. What to do? Snowball fight, of course! And an hour or two of acting like kids. We returned a few days later and hiked 1.5 miles up the snowy slope to Hidden Lake. A winter wonderland, the lake filled with ice and the mountains all around were coated in white. They received record snows in May and June! So much for global warming. In ten days we hiked 57 miles, slept in tents, ate supper around a campfire every evening, and went in to town ev-

ery three days and bought a shower. It got dark every night about ten-thirty and light every morning around five. Grizzly bears were sighted at Cracker Lake the day before our 14 mile hike there, up and back. We saw none. The next evening around seven, a howling thunderstorm blew through camp. Inside my two-man tent, I crawled into my insulated sleeping bag, fully clothed, plus a jacket. The nylon tent walls heaved in and out and rain machine-gunned every square inch. I hoped it wouldn’t leak, but I was too tired to really care. I slept twelve hours and crawled out in the morning to a blue-skyed 32° and a cup of Steve’s scalding camp coffee. Life is good. By our last day, we had viewed a kajillion mountain landscapes, drank out of every stream we came to, and spotted an awesome array of animals: a buffalo herd, horses, prairie dogs, a deer ate out of my hand, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, ground squirrels, marmots, ravens, hawks and eagles. ty of pretty and very in-shape ladies like to camp and hike too.) But no grizzlies. On our final hike, returning from Grinnell Lake, a grizzly was spotted ten minutes ahead, on the trail! Eyeballs on swivels, the four of us anxiously made our way. Apparently, so many hikers, cameras snapping, had converged on the animal that the poor beast escaped back into the forest for some peace.

Pictured to the left is a grizzly sow and cub from Yellowstone. A week after we arrived home, a grizzly with three cubs mauled three campers near Yellowstone. Killed one man, injured one man and a woman. Perhaps missing our grizzly sighting wasn’t such a bad deal after all. Dublin, Kildare, Limerick and Ennis is horse-racing country with an interesting past. Drive across the Curragh to visit the Irish National Stud at Kildare. In 1902 rich and eccentric Scots brewery heir Colonel William Hall-Walker established the Irish national stud on the southern outskirts of Kildare. The Colonel was fascinated by astrology and exotic religion. Stallions and mares were paired off according to the compatibility of their birth signs. The boxes in which they were accommodated had lantern skylights to allow the entry of influential rays of moon and stars. But there’s lot more to see: the Rock of Cashel, where St. Patrick preached, is astonishing at first sight. Perched spectacularly on a high rock outcrop is a walled cluster of historic ecclesiastical buildings, one of Ireland’s most important centers in medieval time, from which powerful kings and churchmen ruled for nearly a thousand years. Visit Tipperary, which was made famous in a wartime marching song and then drive on to Limerick and take in the beauty of St. Mary’s Cathedral, King John’s Castle, and the stone where the Treaty of Limerick was signed in 1691.

Experience

Ireland By: Diane Picht, Four Season Travel If you’re going to Ireland and expect to see leprechauns in the countryside... you’re in for quite a shock. These days Dublin, Cork, Galway and Belfast are four of the most vibrant cities in all of Europe. But just to make sure the gentle paced country life thrives, turn off the main road and in five short minutes up a lazy country lane will be the beautiful countryside of the emerald isle. Beginning in Dublin, one of the most exciting and fun capital cities in Europe, Irish hospitality is genuine and should be enjoyed to the hilt. You will see a few highrise blocks that overshadow the historic Trinity Church, the Custom House, St. Peter’s Cathedral, but Ireland’s best Georgian architecture are in the streets and squares around St. Stephen’s Green, north of the Liffey and off O’Connell street. At Trinity College see the most beautiful book in the world, the Book of Kells, which lies in a glass display and pages are changed every two months. Emerging

Make an excursion to Ennis and the west coast along Ireland’s spectacular Atlantic coastline with a drive to the 688 foot Cliffs of Moher and savor the breathtaking panorama of the Clare coast. A scenic route across the limestone plateau of The Burren takes you to Galway, a vibrant city with great seafaring tradition. While there don’t forget to see the Lynch Stone and hear its chilling tale. A short drive south via Clonderlaw Bay to Killimer and crossing the Shannon estuary by ferry will offer you photo ops all the way. Continue on to Killorglin on Dingle Bay to the spectacular Ring of Kerry for a 100 mile panoramic drive around the Isle’s southwestern tip. Take some great photos of the lakes of Killarney from Ladies View and spend the night in the popular of resort of Killarney. Cross the Kerry Mountains through County Cork to Blarney and experience the magical Kissing Stone. A visit to Waterford on east coast is incomplete without a stop at the world famous Waterford Crystal Factory. Make your way back to Dublin by the way of Avoca and Enniscorthy, the historic site of the final battle of the Great Rebellion of 1798. At Avoca, visit Ireland’s oldest handweaving mill, the picturesque Wicklow Mountains and the 6th century Christian monastic site founded by St. Kevin. Your Dog Can Get Allergies, Too By: Ezra Schneider, owner Noah’s Bark and Certified Pet Groomer

Canine allergies are a lot like human allergies. Dogs can react to things in the air, in their food or on their skin. Learn to recognize canine allergy symptoms

and provide your dog with needed relief. The most common signs of inhalant allergy or fleas are frequent itching, chewing and biting, especially on tail, stomach, and insides of the hind legs, as well as licking and chewing of paws. Inhaled allergies can

result in sneezing, coughing and watery eyes. Vomiting and diarrhea are usually symptoms of food allergies. Hives and rashes can be symptoms of various types of allergies. If you suspect an allergy to inhalants, vacuum and dust frequently. Culprits include dust, mold spores, pollen grains, and household chemicals such as carpet cleaner and air fresheners. Your veterinarian may recommend antihistamines to keep the itching at bay while the skin heals and the allergen is diminished. Check your dog for fleas, as your dog could be suffering from flea bite dermatitis, an allergy to flea’s saliva. It only takes one or two flea bites to set off a dog’s allergies to fleas. Never apply flea products to irritated or broken skin; the chemicals could further irritate and injure the skin. Careful grooming and frequent examinations, not only for fleas but flea droppings, can help alleviate this allergy. Ask your vet about flea products such as sprays, shampoos, topicals and pills.

If you suspect an allergy to food, realize that typical canine food allergens include corn, beef, dairy products, wheat and soybeans. Talk to your veterinarian about a special diet and food allergy tests to find the allergen. Consider the possibility of contact allergies. Some dogs are allergic to their bedding like cedar wood chips and wool are two possible offenders. Grass and plastic food bowls are others. If your dog has acne on his chin and uses a plastic feeding bowl, consider switching to a steel, glass or ceramic feeding bowl. Like a human being, your dog may also have outdoor allergies, in which case you may need to keep its outdoors activities to a minimum. Bring your dog to the veterinarian when the itching first manifests itself to avoid the possibility of secondary skin infections, which can be caused by excess chewing and scratching. Early detection and remedy of the symptoms will keep your dog healthier and make you happier as well.

rchitecture

Putting Functionality First: Phoenix Design Group, Inc. I asked my twelve year old son why he aspires to be an architect and not a doctor or a lawyer. “A doctor saves lives and a lawyer can protect your freedom, but an architect’s work is everlasting. My buildings will endure long after I am gone,” he said. I was stunned by his reply. That same week when I interviewed Robert Teller, a licensed architect with forty years of experience, and highly regarded builder Roberto Chacon, I understood what my son was trying to say. Bob, who owns Phoenix Design Group, Inc., is a soft spoken gentleman whose level of refinement and experience was evident from our brief conversation. He reflected on the numerous relationships that evolved over the years as a direct result of his working closely with the clients throughout the design and construction phases of work. Regardless of the size or type of project, Bob is committed to designing with the client’s needs as the driving element in the process. Projects such as the atrium/education build-

76 I IMPULSE I Fall 2010

ing addition for the St. Charles First United Methodist Church, the nursing home renovation at the VA Teller’s renovated kitchen. Medical Center at Jefferson Barracks and the awardwinning Datamax Headquarters facility located in south St. Louis are all examples of client-focused problem-solving in an effort to create a new environment that is both functional and exciting. “When we leave a project, we are out of the picture. The client lives with what we have created. We want that lasting impression to be a good one; everything about the project should be a positive experience. A home is even more personal. You are dealing with somebody’s inner sanctum,” he stated. “I feel that it’s our job to pay attention to detail.” Both say the phrase cannot be overused. “That’s where the genius of our work comes in. To build a wall, hang a ceiling, a door or a window requires knowledge of those items, but to accessorize, flush out or manipulate space so that it all blends into creating the built environment is the true testimony of our combined talents. There are many subtleties that architects and builders fre-

quently miss, but with our mental checklist you sure know when it’s there and when it’s not.” So what differentiates Phoenix Design Group, Inc? “I truly believe that we are perceptive listeners, that we go the extra yard and that we deliver a product that exceeds the client’s expectations. We want repeat customers, and the only way to achieve that is to satisfy your clients’ needs fully,” replied Roberto, who has been working with Bob in a truly synergistic relationship for several years. He balances Bob’s design skills with a no-nonsense practicality born from years as a contractor. The duo’s mantra is to make a positive difference by rendering a service that combines space, design, color and acoustics to give birth to incomparable functionality. Designing a second location for the famous Peruvian restaurant, Mango, required insight. Beautifully done, the restaurant features aesthetic decor that complements chef Jorge Calvo’s masterful creations dubbed by RFT as “Good as Inca Gold.” As with any project, an ongoing dialog is essential in finding nuances that could make the design extraordinary and we were able to do that at Mango,” proudly stated Roberto, who holds a degree in Architecture from Washington University and is a member of CSI and AIA. In his 20 plus years of building spec homes, subdivision and commercial buildings, Roberto has amassed a wealth of experience in creating attractive environments with keen attention to his clients’ needs. Buildings like the Law Offices for Klar, Izsak and Stenger, Cook Medical Offices, Farm Bureau in Moscow Mills, S-Kay Pools, Sprint store, Garden Gate Party Rental and Lincoln County Ambulance District reflect his passion.

Roberto Chacon (left), builder, and Robert Teller, architect, owner of Phoenix Design Group.

A recent project that both men enjoyed overwhelmingly was updating the kitchen at Bob’s Wildwood home. Like most houses today, they visualized the hearth as the heart of their home. Bob’s design literally integrated three rooms of the 35 year old residence into one extended living area, including a vaulted wood ceiling, cantilevered hammer-beams, and picturesque windows that not only added a cozy living area but effectively enlarged the modernized kitchen. With beautiful cherry cabinets, multiple lighting sources, built in wall ovens, gas grill cook top, an expansive granite island and patio doors leading out to the tri-level deck overlooking the vista of Babler State Park, the small kitchen was transformed to an entertainer’s dream. It is a testimony to the team’s expertise in problem solving and utilizing available resources to make a design exceptional. “I guess that is the true nature of architecture, realizing dreams can become works of art with right use of wood, bricks and mortar,” concluded Bob. What to Drink?

By: Jack Val Spencer, LMT In the last issue we discussed "WATER: The Wonder Drug" - and said that we would continue that discussion in this issue with “What is the best kind of water to drink?”

There is an ongoing battle over which kind/ kinds of water are best to drink. Is bottled water any better than tap water? What about distilled water? Or ‘softened’ water. Should I filter my water? What kind of filter is best? These are just a few of the questions that need to be addressed if you want to obtain and maintain maximum health and longevity. On every inhabited planet, centenarians attribute their health and longevity to native water. And scientists agree with them. What they all have in common is pure water sources located far from any city and free from chemicals and toxins. So what are city dwellers supposed to do? Well there are a few good options. Your safest bet is filtered water. The best kinds use activated charcoal which removes the impurities but leaves the water soluble minerals. DO NOT use a water softener for your drinking water! Hard water may not be good for your water heater and household plumbing but it is VERY GOOD for your own personal plumbing! Water softeners remove the essential trace minerals that your body needs to function well. You should also avoid distilled water unless you are doing it short term for a specific detoxification regimen. Distilled water pulls

Think a

minerals out of your system and is an active absorber of such things as carbon dioxide which will increase the acidity of your body. It might also be mentioned that the most toxic commercial beverages are made with distilled water - namely soft drinks! One of the best ways to filter water is through reverse osmosis - but it is expensive. It can cost anywhere from $160 to $450 plus installation fees. But it is the ONLY way to remove dangerous fluoride from your water. Just a note on that subject: although fluoride is effective in treating dental caries and thus MIGHT be recommended in such products as toothpaste and mouthwash - it should NOT be consumed and thus should not be added to drinking water! Unfortunately there is a dangerous trend at present to even add additional fluoride to special waters and it is being marketed in the BABY section of stores!

If you have concerns about your public water supply there are ways to test your water at home. These home test kits are available for a minimal cost. And your local city should provide you with information on the water supply. Lastly, bottled water has several down sides. Often it is not regulated even as well as the public water supply especially if it is local. And then there is the issue of the bottles themselves. Some plastics leach into the water and

MASSAGE is just a

of course plastics are a petroleum product so they require more dependence on oil supplies. For all it’s benefits, in today’s world you need to be diligent in providing the best possible water you can to keep yourself healthy and strong and living to a ripe old age.

Interventional Pain Care Expands Practice

c

Dr. Suresh Krishnan, M.D. Interventional Pain Care is located at 1165A E. Cherry Street in Troy and 600 Medical Drive, Suite 106 in Wentzville.

hronic pain is a largely undertreated and misunderstood disease that affects millions of people worldwide. It is defined as moderate to severe pain that persists for one or more months longer than would generally be expected for recovery to a specific disease, injury or surgery. The National Institutes of Health estimates that chronic pain affects more than 90 million people in the U.S., while the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health estimates that chronic pain costs the U.S. economy $100 billion a year in lost work time and medical expenses. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) devices are approved by the FDA as a method of pain control for the treatment of chronic pain of the arms, legs and trunk, or pain resulting from failed back surgery. Although it is not a cure, SCS therapy can be successful in reducing pain that is the result of dysfunction or damage to the nervous system caused by injury, disease or localized trauma. A physician in the forefront of the treatment of chronic pain is renowned pain care specialist Dr. Suresh Krishnan, M.D. Dr. Krishnan recently expanded his practice, Interventional Pain Care, to a new main location in Troy, MO. Recognized for their multi-disciplinary approach, the physicians at Interventional Pain Care specialize in providing patients with advanced therapies such as spinal cord stimulation (SCS), Dorsal column stimulators, Epidural steroid injections (Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, Caudal), Facet nerve blocks, Sympathetic blocks, Interacostal nerve blocks, Discography, Kyphoplasty, Vertebroplasty, Nucleoplasty, Discography, Trigger point injections, Intrathecal infusion

pump, Radiofrequency Denervations and more. Offering a specialized approach to diagnosing and treating back, neck and leg pain, Dr. Suresh Krishnan M.D. A.B.A designs each patient’s program around the mission of improving function, alleviating pain, and enhancing the quality of life for people living with chronic pain. “The new facility in Troy allows our practice to extend advanced services to a larger base of patients who suffer with chronic pain,” said Dr. Krishnan. “The recent advancements in pain management treatments have given us the opportunity to offer our patients more options and targeted solutions.” Dr. Krishnan is board certified in Anesthesiology and has extensive pain management experience. Interventional Pain Care offers some of today’s most innovative treatment methods for a host of painful conditions and injuries where patients are treated with the highly personalized and supportive care the patients want and deserve. “Ninety-five percent of all my new patients are sent to me by other doctors. These referring doctors know we have access to the latest innovations and discoveries due to my strong academic background,” Dr. Krishnan is fellowship-trained in pain management and has a background as a board certified ENT surgeon. He also has more than 10 years of experience in the field of pain management. What all of this means is that he can often find solutions to painful problems when others fail to remedy. “It is indeed a wonderful feeling when you hear your patient say that they are able to do things they could not do for the past few years.” Interventional Pain Care can be reached in Troy at (636) 528-3060 and (636)-614-1231 and in Wentzville at (636)465-2597. INVISIBLE ZINC

A

ustralian owned company Ganehill is behind the new generation sunscreens “Invisible Zinc,” a range of everyday sunscreen, skin care and cosmetic products all utilizing a world patented form of micronized zinc oxide. This is a natural, 100% mineral blocker that gives a physical protection barrier to ultra violet radiation and environmental pollutants. The ground-breaking technology means all Invisible Zinc sunscreens are able to use the superior physical protection of Zinc Oxide and are proudly free of all chemical sun filters. Most sunscreens on the market today still use these chemical UV filters. Not only do they offer little or no protection against dangerous UVA radiation but they breakdown in UV light. Whereas Invisible Zinc acts like a physical sun shield that reflects UV light away and protects delicate skin in our harsh climate. It’s simply an everyday essential. Tinted Daywear is an all-in-one. It can be used instead of your usual moisturizer and foundation. IZ has won numerous awards, including “World’s Best New Beauty Product 2006” at the Wallpaper Awards in London, judged by an esteemed panel including Lord Norman Foster, Donna Karan and Mario Testino. What makes Zinc So Special? Zinc Oxide is a natural, physical sunscreening agent that sits on your skin reflecting dangerous UVA and UVB rays

ENVIRONMENTAL SKIN PROTECTOR

4HR WATER RESISTANT

SPF 30+ UVA - UVB ESP forms an invisible film on the skin that acts as a barrier between you and the environment, reflecting UV light away and helping to neutralize environmental aggressors such as pollution, chemicals and smoke. High-end UV protection that feels like a daily hydrating moisturizer.

SPF 30+ UVA - UVB 4HR Water Resistant offers the same physical (not chemical) protecting from damaging UV rays as the original INVISIBLE ZINC, but with a four hours water resistance. The micronized 100% natural mineral reflectors create an invisible waterproof shield protecting from both UVA and UVB rays. And with no titanium dioxide or chemical sunfilters, even sensitive skin and children can use it.

away. Chemical sunscreens on the other hand, merely diffuse rays, usually just UVB. Most chemical sunscreens offer little or no protection against UVA rays. Don’t all SPF30+ sunscreens offer the same protection? No. SPF is only a measure of protection against UVB, not UVA. Why is it so important to protect against UVA rays? Apart from being responsible for up to 70% of all aging, UVA exposure is now known to be a major cause of skin cancer. What’s the active ingredient in your sunscreen? INVISIBLE ZINC uses a world-patented form of Zinc Oxide that has been milled down so it is no longer visible to the naked eye. INVISIBLE ZINC is available at Vein Specialties in St. Louis and Washington. For more information, call 866-626VEIN. ■
