THE GROOMER By Ezra Schneider, owner of Noah’s Bark Pet Grooming, Truesdale, MO A pet can be your best friend. With a little help from you and the groomer, it can live an active, comfortable life. At home, a comb is key. Brushes merely skim the surface. To avoid painful matting, comb your pet daily. Never bathe a pet with knots. Water will set the knots and quickly turn them into mats. Mats under the legs and behind the ears can cause severe discomfort and limit mobility. They can also cause skin irritation, especially as dirt and twigs become lodged under the mat. Keeping up with your pet’s coat is a year round necessity. Putting off a grooming visit in the winter can lead to unnecessary suffering. Your groomer will trim, brush, bath, trim nails, and clean ears for your pet. Putting off the visit can lead to matting, ear infections, ingrown or broken nails, and skin conditions. Often your groomer can suggest a slightly longer cut in the winter, but remember that your pet’s body weight does more for insulation than the hair. A wet, matted dog is going to be twice as cold as a well-trimmed one. When bringing your pet to the groomer for the first time, talk with the groomer to establish your grooming plan. Remember that long-haired dogs and cats that are going to be kept long must be combed daily. Otherwise painful matting will occur. If you prefer, the groomer can suggest a haircut that suits the dog and the area you live in. Short haired breeds should also see the groomer several times per year. The groomer can alleviate some shedding, especially in spring and fall when some breeds “blow coat.” Although this doesn’t completely eliminate shedding, it can certainly help. No matter the breed, your groomer probably has a wealth of experience with what will work best for you and your pet. Always remember that your pet can suffer without proper care. Your groomer will be happy to help you establish the care routine appropriate for your dog or cat.

New Senior Living Community Opens in Wentzville

and accessories to create spaces that are one of a kind and in her words, “elegant and timeless”. Assisted by her sister Felicia Boyd, the two have been painting for months to putting on the finishing touches. The family is very proud and excited to have joined with Gordon Gundaker, Jerry Scheidegger and Roy Yust to bring their combined vision of what they think senior living should be like to the Wentzville community.

Under construction - This photo was taken at Twin Oaks at Heritage Pointe while construction was underway. On May 8th, Wentzville will be welcoming a new Senior Living Community into their city. Twin Oaks at Heritage Pointe is celebrating their Open House from 10 am – 4 p.m. While they are new to the Wentzville area, Twin Oaks is not new to caring for seniors. For almost 30 years the Twin Oak’s family has opened their hearts and their home to the elderly with their Residential Care Facility located on Emge road in O’Fallon. The Huber and Blattel families are proud of their new location and everyone has pitched in to help with their own talents. The original concept of assisted care living was a vision that Mary Ann Huber had in 1981. She knew that many seniors could live longer and happier with daily assistance in a more homelike atmosphere. She relied on her nursing background to give her direction and the small business grew rapidly. Today she is still very active in the company; you can find her sketching for the design of the facility, driving residents to church or sewing curtains for new resident rooms. CEO Tim Blattel began working with Mary Ann just 6 months into her new venture and they have worked together now for 29 years. With a management background and a love for seniors, Tim has brought a wealth of expertise to this new project. His vision was a state of the art and streamlined design that would create lots of community areas and be an inviting space for socializing. Rosemann and Associates architecture firm then took his ideas and made it into a reality. His dream of a memory care unit has also come alive with this community. A favorite part of his job is to assist families and residents with the transition of moving from their home to a senior community and finding the right funding to make it work. Another part of the family ownership team are sisters Kim Bauer and Kathy Blattel who were in high school when the original company was started.

They now manage the daily operations of both companies, usually in a whirlwind of phone calls, meetings and parties. They have 4 and 5 children respectively and often talk about which ones will choose to step into the company. All but two of this

Artisan Melodie Shocklee, daughter of Lou and Leon, has brought her vision of an elegant atmosphere to life with faux finishes, beautiful portraits, and an amazing interior design. She has been working for over a year choosing fabrics, colors,

The first phase which is opening May 10th will include 40 assisted living suites and 10 memory care studios. Amenities that everyone will enjoy are a Garden Café, sunroom, family movie theatre, activity center, chapel and elegant community dining room. On a beautiful day, the outdoor patios offer a great place to gather and relax or take a walk on the walking trail. The Memory Care will offer a safe and secure living space with a licensed nurse on site 24/7. Along with family style dining, daily housekeeping and personal laundry service, the outstanding activity program will keep the memory care residents busy and happy throughout the day. The large assisted living suites include a bedroom, living room, kitchenette, easy access walk-in shower, and an optional covered balcony or porch. They offer easy access, large bathrooms with walk in tubs and showers, washer and dryer hook ups, attached garages and a call button in case of emergency. Numerous amenities are included in the Welcome Home package – daily continental breakfast and dinner, bi-weekly housekeeping, scheduled transportation and community activities. The Twin Oak’s philosophy is to provide an inviting place for residents to enjoy their friends, their families, and their independence. The hottest thing happening in the bridal industry is the little white dress: a short bridal gown that gives the bride an opportunity to be a bride for more than one day. Fun, cute, flirty and maybe a little sexy, the little white bridal gown has a lot to offer. This little white dress can be worn at the rehearsal, and rehearsal dinner, at the reception, or flying away on the honeymoon. Some brides have worn it on the beach and had their pictures made by a local photographer. This shorter dress style is perfect for weddings outside, at the courthouse, or

Choosing A Wine to Serve With Dinner

Wine is a social drink which should be enjoyed in the company of friends and .. food. The right combination between food and wine is a source of ultimate bliss for every connoisseur. Both wine and food can benefit from the right pairing. The right wine can accentuate unexpected gastronomical aspects of food and vice versa, wine can shine in a new light when accompanied by the right dish. In order to savor the splendor of such combinations, one does not need to frequent expensive restaurants and buy overpriced wines. Rather, when combining food and wine it is one’s intuition and curiosity that are of paramount importance. Most rules for agreeable food - wine combinations date back to the 19th century and are made by French cooks who travel around Europe showing other nations the French savoir-vivre. It is since then that we know that champagne goes well with oysters, white wine – with seafood, and red wine – with game and red meats. Those rules, however, have been broken many times throughout the years because the nature of certain dishes and the rich wine variety available allow for a much freer interpretation. For example, some red meats could be made more enjoyable by stronger white wines. A more practical approach for combining wine with food is to avoid any possible dissonance between them. For example, an exceptional wine stands out much better when accompanied by a not so sophisticated dish that will bring out the wine’s superb qualities instead of fighting with it. Certain wines and foods have “found” each other over the years and represent especially suitable

combinations. Generally those are the regional wines and foods. Almost all local dishes go best with the wines from their regions. Tips for making good food – wine choices: Try to balance the weight of both, i.e. heavy dishes and those with a strong taste, such as game and red meat should be enjoyed with an equally heavy wine. In most cases those are red wines but some full-bodied whites could be an equally suitable alternative. Dry wines could develop a very unpleasant sour or even bitter taste if served with desserts. Generally deserts are served with wines that are at least comparably sweet, if not sweeter. Wines with high acidity go best with heavy, rich in fat dishes. This is because the high fat content negates the impact of the acid. High-tannin wines should be combined with foods rich in proteins. The proteins combine with the tannins, thus diminishing the tannin taste. Wines made from grape varieties that contain a lot of tannins, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are an excellent match for red meats and other proteinrich foods. On the other hand, high-tannin wines acquire an unpleasant metallic taste if combined with fish and other seafood. Or they could have an extremely bitter taste when combined with salty dishes. So finally… which wine? You could have in mind the rules above when making your selection but don’t be blinded by them and never take things for granted. Have an open mind and be ready to experiment. Blumenhof

Blumenhof Vineyards & Winery is nestled along Highway 94 in the historic village of Dutzow, Missouri’s oldest German settlement. It is also the most awarded All-Missouri winery, from vineyards just first established in 1979. Dedicated to producing an unsurpassed selection of Missouri-grown wines over the years, the winery has won scores of awards at prominent national and international wine competitions. Blumenhof is operated today by second and third generation family. Blumenhof takes its name from the Blumenberg family’s ancestral farm in northwestern Germany. Blumenberg, which means “Court of Flowers,” is a perfect name for this winery. The Village of Dutzow, named after the founder’s estate in Germany, is the oldest German settlement in the State, and one of the first towns in Missouri to have a winery. The vineyard’s wine list includes Chambourcin, Chardonel, Cynthiana, Rayon d’Or, Seyval, Vidal and Vignoles. Blumenhof grows seven acres of Vidal, three acres of Chambourcin, and two acres of Cynthiana. Their dry white wines include a 2008 Syval and a 2008 Chardonel. Especially favored is their dry rose, the 2008 Winegarden Rose which was awarded the Silver Medal at the 2009 Mid-American Wine Competition. Two favored dry red wines are the 2008 Original Cyn and the 2008 Chambourcin. The ever popular semidry white wines include the 2009 Ray-

on d’Or, the new vintage 2009 Femme Osage, and the 2008 Missouri Weinland which received Gold Medals this year at both the Taster’s Guild International Judging and the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition. Their semi-sweet include Katy’s Blush, a 2009 Vignoles, La Charrette, a Silver Medal winner Devil’s Den Red, and their 2008 Valvin Muscat which received a Gold Medal at the 2009 Pacific Rim International Wine Competition. Blumenhof’s German heritage is apparent in more than their wines, but also in the property’s architecture and warm friendly ambiance. Their wine garden has live music in the spring, summer, and fall. In the summer the grill serves bratwurst and potato salad amongst the winery’s beautiful vineyards. The messy tousled up-do is the look of the year for any occasion, including weddings, proms, etc. Next up was Shana whose hair had started to lose its shape and was looking frizzy and limp. She also did not like the heaviness around her face. Solution: shaped up layers by taking off several inches to remove split ends caused by blow drying and straightening. This brought her hair together for a complete healthy and thick shape. Often when hair is cut short around the face it causes it to look very thin. Dom’s technique of razoring the hair around the face gave Shana’s hair a lift and reduced heaviness without loosing the look of thick hair. While a moderate amount of stress may motivate and stimulate us, a high level of stress is potentially harmful to our health. Evidence indicates that those who are bereaved have a decreased resistance to infections and other diseases, some which may even be life threatening. One study for instance, showed a striking correlation between severe stress and the onset of cancer. This stress is also likely to lead to problems in other relationships. The incidence of separation and divorce in parents who experience the death of a young child is exceptionally high. The death rate is higher for bereaved persons than others in the same age and social categories. This is especially true

for the first year following the death. It is a critical period during which the health and welfare of the bereaved should be of prime concern. In order to work your way through stressful times following the loss of a loved one, there are several ways to help yourself. The most important thought is to know that you have the right to your time. Don’t feel obligated to ‘get over it’ just because others don’t understand or share your loss, or because they mistakenly believe that you should be able to get on with your life in a time frame that is convenient for them. Second, you have the right to express your emotions. There is no right way to grieve. And the process of grieving involves a wide variety of experiences and emotions that may include depression, anger, anxiety, disappointment, and more. Third, you have the right to take care of yourself. Do your very best to take care of yourself by getting plenty of rest, eating well and exercising. Fourth, you have the time to take time out. You have a right to and very likely a need for time to yourself and by yourself. Fifth, you have the right to expect support. Although your experience of grieving is uniquely yours, you do not have to go through it alone. Grief shared with others can actually bring people closer together. Last, you have the right to heal and trust. You can do it - really. Take inspiration from people you know who have made their way through grief and loss. You too, have the right to everything you need to grieve well so that you can live fully. Your loved one would want nothing less for you. ave you ever wondered why the funeral director asks the vehicles in a procession to turn on their flashers? It is not only for your safety, it’s the law. The Missouri Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors rules and regulations state in Chapter 194, section 500-512, the laws that regulate a funeral procession. The procession must be lead by a vehicle with a circulating lamp exhibiting an amber or purple light or lens or flashing headlights. A hearse or another funeral home vehicle may be used. In Troy and many cities the police and or sheriff’s departments work hand in hand with the funeral home by providing officers to escort the procession to the place of burial. Vehicles and pedestrians must yield the right-of-way to any vehicle

in a procession at an intersection regardless of a traffic signal or sign. However, a procession must yield to any emergency vehicle or as directed by an officer. A person cannot drive between cars in a procession, join the procession to gain the right-of-way or pass the procession if there is not a passing lane. Most drivers have the utmost respect for a funeral procession. Many pull to the side of the road and I have even seen some people get out and stand beside their car as a sign of respect for the deceased and their family. Water The Wonder Drug

By: Jack Val Spencer, LMT How important is water? Well considering that wars are fought over access to it, it would seem that it is pretty important. Consider also that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. The controversy over how much and what kind of water continues to rage on but there are some basics that seem to hold up to common sense, as well as research. A person should be drinking approximately one half his/her weight - in ounces - of water every single day. Certainly no less than eight cups. About a glass an hour while you are awake should keep you well hydrated. This does not include any beverage containing caffeine, carbonation or alcohol which are all diuretics and will actually REMOVE anywhere from four to eight glasses of water from your system per the same amount of that beverage. Sugar can also dehydrate you because of the need for water to dilute the amount of sugar in your system. This is especially important information for diabetics.

On a person note, I learned the importance of water while attending massage school. At the time, I had already given up smoking (which also requires more hydration because of the toxins it creates that need to be removed from the body). I had quit drinking caffeine and alcohol 30 years prior and was only drinking a maximum of two carbon-

ated beverages a day, neither of which contained caffeine. Consequently, when the instructor gave us the information I have just shared, I was doubtful. So, in an attempt to prove to myself (or possibly disprove what the instructor had said), I decided to conduct a little experiment on myself. Since I was supposed to be sharing this information with my clients, I acknowledged that I am not a good salesman unless I am myself sold on the idea. For the next month (surely I could do most anything for a month) I would sacrifice my soda and drink primarily water, as well as a little juice. Remember that juice is full of concentrated sugars even at best, another fact that diabetics need to realize. As someone in my sixties, I recall from my youth something that has become all but obsolete: the juice glass. In this day and age of supersizing, such a small quantity is almost unheard of. I might add that our major soft drinks, specifically CocaCola, Pepsi-Cola, and even Dr. Pepper orginated as medicinal concoctions which were dispersed by the local soda jerk/pharmacist in very small glasses. They were never intended to be consumed as Big Gulps! Anyway, a month later I discovered (much to my surprise) that: 1. I had lost about 30 pounds. 2. I had lost about five inches in my waist. 3. I had more energy than I had since I was about 20 years old. 4. The arthritis in my knee (the result of a bicycle accident

Will Your Knees Carry the Load?

magine yourself carrying 15 pound weights on each shoulder every day, all day. Imagine how you would feel when getting in and out of the car, going up and down stairs, carrying groceries. If you’re a mere 10 pounds overweight, that’s the kind of stress you’re placing on your joints. Knees and hips are built to last a lifetime, but every pound that you add to your frame multiplies by three to six times the force on these joints with each step you take. The message is clear: if your joints are feeling young and healthy now, a good way to keep them pain free is to maintain a healthy weight. A study by a team of specialists at Johns Hopkins Medical Center found a direct correlation between body mass index (BMI) and significant pain in the knee, hip and back. Other studies indicate that overweight women are four times more likely than normal weight women to develop osteoarthritis of the knee. For overweight men, the risk is five times greater. There are more than 100 types of arthritis, but osteoarthritis, often known as a wear and tear disease, is by far the most common, affecting about 27 million Americans. Scientists are not sure what causes this degenerative joint disease, but after genetics and age, obesity is the most important risk factor. The added stress placed on joints is the most obvious reason, but excess weight apparently affects joints in more indirect ways as well. Even in non-weight-bearing joints such as those in the hand, overweight persons have a higher rate of arthritis. If you’re overweight and haven’t felt joint pain yet, it may be just a matter of time. By age 40, about 90 percent of persons show signs (on x-rays) indicating early arthritis, but the disease develops gradually and usually begins causing pain and stiffness after age 50. At first, you may feel these symptoms after a hard day’s work in the garden or for a few minutes after you get out of bed in the morning. Symptoms vary from person to person, but some individuals eventually develop pain and stiffness so severe that they find it difficult to manage every day activities. It’s not always clear why arthritis progresses in some individuals rather than others. There is no known cure, but weight loss and exercise are nearly always recommended to help control symptoms. Whether you have arthritic joints or not, it should be clear that it’s more comfortable walking, exercising or performing routine daily activities if you’re not subjecting your joints to an excessively heavy load.

Weight Loss as Treatment

If your joints are already beginning to ache, it makes sense to take a load off of them. In fact, weight loss is usually a major component of arthritis treatment. One study found that a weight loss of 15 pounds gave patients better relief from their symptoms than pain relieving medication. Focusing on overweight arthritis patients age 60 and over, the Arthritis Diet and Activity Promotion Trial (ADAPT), found that subjects in a program combining modest weight loss and moderate exercise showed significant improvement in knee pain and mobility. Exercise is ordinarily an important part of any weight loss program, but persons with joint pain generally don’t feel like exercising or doing anything much that provokes pain. There is also a widespread myth that too much exercise will “wear out” joints. In fact, lack of physical activity makes muscles weaker, leading to more rapid progression of arthritis. And without physical activity, weight gain is virtually inevitable. The solution is to replace this negative cycle with a positive one. Regular exercise helps you lose weight, which in turn eases pain and makes it easier to continue exercising. A prior injury, such as a fracture or torn ligament, is often a factor in the breakdown of cartilage that characterizes osteoarthritis. And persons (such as carpet layers) who subject their joints to repetitive activities such as kneeling or squatting have a high risk of developing osteoarthritis of the knees. Exercise–even long-distance running– is not one of those high-risk activities. Data from the Framingham Offspring Cohort study, tracking subjects from 1993 to 2005, found no difference between those who ran and those who engaged in lower-impact activities such as walking. They were equally likely to get osteoarthritis of the knees. An Australian study, however, found that distance runners and others performing vigorous weight-bearing exercise actually had thicker, healthier cartilage in their knees than those who exercised more moderately. Vigorous activity improves blood circulation to the cartilage, providing the nutrients the knee needs while strengthening muscles around the joint, providing support. For persons with significant joint pain and arthritis, of course, some alteration of activities is often necessary. Your doctor or physical therapist can help you choose lower impact activities, such as swimming or biking and show you appropriate stretching and range of motion routines. Some kind of regular exercise is needed to help control weight, preserve muscle tone and provide proper circulation to joints. Weight loss, whether through exercise, dieting or a combination of the two, has been found to reduce the symptoms of osteoarthritis, but not necessarily stop the progression of arthritis.

n today’s corporate world it’s not enough just to know your business, your image is often what will get you in the front door. I would first like to address those men out there who look several years younger than they are. While in our later years many of us strive to look younger, being young and looking even younger can hurt that first impression. I have even experiences with men who have recently graduated from college eager to enter the business world but instead look like they should be entering high school! What can they do to look more professional? One option is to purchase glasses with non prescription glasses to make your appearance look a little older and more serious. Remember, these don’t have to be the glasses your father wore. There are many styles, colors, shapes and sizes to fit your style. The same goes for all of the older gentleman out there. There was a time when a lot of the frames available to men all looked pretty much the same. You know how they looked-they either had the extra bar across the bridge or they were the old horned rim, thick plastic frames (which have returned in popularity as the “retro” look). While these looks are okay for some, you have a lot more choices now. Choices include a variety of materials known for their strength and durability, as well as being capable of holding most lens materials. Remember those glass lenses that “weighed a ton”? You also have choices here. You can select from lighter weight lenses that change with the sun or another option is to select a frame with a magnetic clip. Worried about the clip scratching your glasses? Don’t be. Remember, these are made to go with the frame allowing a space between the clip and the lens to prevent scratches. Remember, you only get one chance at that first impression. Don’t let them remember you as “Mr. Magoo” or “that nerd with the tape on his glasses.” Now that we’ve talked those of you in the corporate world about those of you who prefer to get your hands dirty at both work and play. As mentioned before, there is a wide variety of lenses and frames available. Baseball fan? Like those sunglasses players they wear while they are playing? Do you really like them but don’t think you can have them with a prescription in them? Think again. There are sunglass frames out there that are safety approved and can be fit with your prescription. Going in and out of a building or car/truck a lot on the job? You may want to have sun sensitive lenses made with your prescription. Remember certain tint colors work better for different weather conditions and times of the day. Consult with your eye care professional for what will work best for you.

New Cancer Center ment, which is very calming. Dr. Cohen has enjoyed joining the Patients First Washington Campus, and says Washington is “the America I grew up in” and has found it very welcoming. He and his wife Stephanie have two daughters. He retired from the Navy in October 2004, at which time he was the chief of Radiation Oncology at Portsmouth, Virginia and the senior Radiation Oncologist in the Navy. He has served as both the primary and secondary investigator for the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and participated in many clinical trials through the cooperative group process, which included the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Van Tuyl welcomes “the opportunity, and rare chance – to create the wheel from the ground up” with the Patients First Health Care Cancer Center. He wants to see the Cancer Center do open clinical trials and feels the support for this “is phenomenal.” To handle that challenge, the center will need to meet several criteria, such as to establish a track record, a review process and an affiliation with another Institution. These are high expectations, and he does have benchmarks established, but feels by starting fresh with the new Cancer Center, the process should be faster. He has the experience to build such a program. Dr. Van Tuyl feels the best test for the standard of care is “this is the place I would want to go myself” and that the Cancer Center will be able to provide every type of treatment needed.
