TIPS FROM
THE GROOMER By Ezra Schneider, owner of Noah’s Bark Pet Grooming, Truesdale, MO A pet can be your best friend. With a little help from you and the groomer, it can live an active, comfortable life. At home, a comb is key. Brushes merely skim the surface. To avoid painful matting, comb your pet daily. Never bathe a pet with knots. Water will set the knots and quickly turn them into mats. Mats under the legs and behind the ears can cause severe discomfort and limit mobility. They can also cause skin irritation, especially as dirt and twigs become lodged under the mat. Keeping up with your pet’s coat is a year round necessity. Putting off a grooming visit in the winter can lead to unnecessary suffering. Your groomer will trim, brush, bath, trim nails, and clean ears for your pet. Putting off the visit can lead to matting, ear infections, ingrown or broken nails, and skin conditions. Often your groomer can suggest a slightly longer cut in the winter, but remember that your pet’s body weight does more for insulation than the hair. A wet, matted dog is going to be twice as cold as a well-trimmed one. When bringing your pet to the groomer for the first time, talk with the groomer to establish your grooming plan. Remember that long-haired dogs and cats that are going to be kept long must be combed daily. Otherwise painful matting will occur. If you prefer, the groomer can suggest a haircut that suits the dog and the area you live in. Short haired breeds should also see the groomer several times per year. The groomer can alleviate some shedding, especially in spring and fall when some breeds “blow coat.” Although this doesn’t completely eliminate shedding, it can certainly help. No matter the breed, your groomer probably has a wealth of experience with what will work best for you and your pet. Always remember that your pet can suffer without proper care. Your groomer will be happy to help you establish the care routine appropriate for your dog or cat.

Most pets need occasional baths. If your pets visit the groomer regularly, every 6-8 weeks, they don’t need baths between. Too much bathing strips the natural oils that protect the skin and coat. If it becomes necessary to bathe between grooming, choose a mild shampoo.

and accessories to create spaces that are one of a kind and in her words, “elegant and timeless”. Assisted by her sister Felicia Boyd, the two have been painting for months to putting on the finishing touches. The family is very proud and excited to have joined with Gordon Gundaker, Jerry Scheidegger and Roy Yust to bring their combined vision of what they think senior living should be like to the Wentzville community.
Under construction - This photo was taken at Twin Oaks at Heritage Pointe while construction was underway. On May 8th, Wentzville will be welcoming a new Senior Living Community into their city. Twin Oaks at Heritage Pointe is celebrating their Open House from 10 am – 4 p.m. While they are new to the Wentzville area, Twin Oaks is not new to caring for seniors. For almost 30 years the Twin Oak’s family has opened their hearts and their home to the elderly with their Residential Care Facility located on Emge road in O’Fallon. The Huber and Blattel families are proud of their new location and everyone has pitched in to help with their own talents. The original concept of assisted care living was a vision that Mary Ann Huber had in 1981. She knew that many seniors could live longer and happier with daily assistance in a more homelike atmosphere. She relied on her nursing background to give her direction and the small business grew rapidly. Today she is still very active in the company; you can find her sketching for the design of the facility, driving residents to church or sewing curtains for new resident rooms. CEO Tim Blattel began working with Mary Ann just 6 months into her new venture and they have worked together now for 29 years. With a management background and a love for seniors, Tim has brought a wealth of expertise to this new project. His vision was a state of the art and streamlined design that would create lots of community areas and be an inviting space for socializing. Rosemann and Associates architecture firm then took his ideas and made it into a reality. His dream of a memory care unit has also come alive with this community. A favorite part of his job is to assist families and residents with the transition of moving from their home to a senior community and finding the right funding to make it work. Another part of the family ownership team are sisters Kim Bauer and Kathy Blattel who were in high school when the original company was started.
They now manage the daily operations of both companies, usually in a whirlwind of phone calls, meetings and parties. They have 4 and 5 children respectively and often talk about which ones will choose to step into the company. All but two of this

You can find owner Leon Blattel on the construction site almost daily, coordinating the ideas of the owners with the expertise of the general contractor, Gundaker Commercial Group. His attention to the details of the security systems, fire alarms, back-up emergency lighting, generators and such will ensure the safety and smooth operation of the new building. His wife Louise Blattel assists prospective residents in the information office, enjoying her time meeting new friends and helping choose the perfect living space that suits their needs. Artisan Melodie Shocklee, daughter of Lou and Leon, has brought her vision of an elegant atmosphere to life with faux finishes, beautiful portraits, and an amazing interior design. She has been working for over a year choosing fabrics, colors,

{Bridal}
Weddings of 2010 by: The staff of The Wedding Shoppe in Troy, MO Photos by Lisa Nikole and JKS Photography What’s hot for the 2010 bride? What is trendy and what is new again? The hottest thing happening in the bridal industry is the little white dress: a short bridal gown that gives the bride an opportunity to be a bride for more than one day. Fun, cute, flirty and maybe a little sexy, the little white bridal gown has a lot to offer. This little white dress can be worn at the rehearsal, and rehearsal dinner, at the reception, or flying away on the honeymoon. Some brides have worn it on the beach and had their pictures made by a local photographer. This shorter dress style is perfect for weddings outside, at the courthouse, or
anywhere a long traditional dress will not fit your occasion. More traditional bridal gowns with higher waist lines and full skirts have hit the runways with a 1950’s influence. These romantic styles have simple details and some include pockets and deep sweetheart necklines. Alfred Angelo’s style 2119 is the perfect example of this style. The 1940’s styles still have a huge influence on bridal gowns. Gowns of soft satins that are strapless and fitted to the body to show off the brides curves look beautiful in all sizes. Old Hollywood styles, some with ruffles or lace, look stunning in white as well as soft diamond whites and creams. Sottero and Midgley’s style Adorae reflects this style and is stunning.

Plus-sized brides will find designers catering to their styles and needs. Gowns are available that fit your curves and flatter your assets in the same styles every one is wearing but in fuller sizes and made to fit to flatter your body. Alfred Angelo has the best plus size collection in the industry with out additional cost for the plus size. The newest growing trend has been two or more bridal gowns for a bride: one for the wedding and one for the reception and sometimes a third one (the little white dress). A few grooms have chosen to change tuxes when the bride changes. Speaking of grooms, the silver tux is finding popularity with brides to compliment their wedding colors. This light silver looks very fresh in the spring and summer. Darker grays look elegant with fall and winter weddings. Hair is soft and romantic pulled to the side and embellished with flowers, feathers, and crystals. Brides are showing their individuality with shoes and slips dyed to match wedding colors. Short gloves and lace high neck bolero jackets add elegant details. Weddings are hot, fashionable and fun. Brides are enjoying the planning and savoring every moment of the event. Styles are reminiscent of the past or fashion forward. Each wedding is a reflection of the bride and groom’s personalities.

Choosing A Wine to Serve With Dinner
Wine is a social drink which should be enjoyed in the company of friends and .. food. The right combination between food and wine is a source of ultimate bliss for every connoisseur. Both wine and food can benefit from the right pairing. The right wine can accentuate unexpected gastronomical aspects of food and vice versa, wine can shine in a new light when accompanied by the right dish. In order to savor the splendor of such combinations, one does not need to frequent expensive restaurants and buy overpriced wines. Rather, when combining food and wine it is one’s intuition and curiosity that are of paramount importance. Most rules for agreeable food - wine combinations date back to the 19th century and are made by French cooks who travel around Europe showing other nations the French savoir-vivre. It is since then that we know that champagne goes well with oysters, white wine – with seafood, and red wine – with game and red meats. Those rules, however, have been broken many times throughout the years because the nature of certain dishes and the rich wine variety available allow for a much freer interpretation. For example, some red meats could be made more enjoyable by stronger white wines. A more practical approach for combining wine with food is to avoid any possible dissonance between them. For example, an exceptional wine stands out much better when accompanied by a not so sophisticated dish that will bring out the wine’s superb qualities instead of fighting with it. Certain wines and foods have “found” each other over the years and represent especially suitable
combinations. Generally those are the regional wines and foods. Almost all local dishes go best with the wines from their regions. Tips for making good food – wine choices: Try to balance the weight of both, i.e. heavy dishes and those with a strong taste, such as game and red meat should be enjoyed with an equally heavy wine. In most cases those are red wines but some full-bodied whites could be an equally suitable alternative. Dry wines could develop a very unpleasant sour or even bitter taste if served with desserts. Generally deserts are served with wines that are at least comparably sweet, if not sweeter. Wines with high acidity go best with heavy, rich in fat dishes. This is because the high fat content negates the impact of the acid. High-tannin wines should be combined with foods rich in proteins. The proteins combine with the tannins, thus diminishing the tannin taste. Wines made from grape varieties that contain a lot of tannins, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are an excellent match for red meats and other proteinrich foods. On the other hand, high-tannin wines acquire an unpleasant metallic taste if combined with fish and other seafood. Or they could have an extremely bitter taste when combined with salty dishes. So finally… which wine? You could have in mind the rules above when making your selection but don’t be blinded by them and never take things for granted. Have an open mind and be ready to experiment. {Missouri Wines}
Blumenhof
Blumenhof Vineyards & Winery is nestled along Highway 94 in the historic village of Dutzow, Missouri’s oldest German settlement. It is also the most awarded All-Missouri winery, from vineyards just first established in 1979. Dedicated to producing an unsurpassed selection of Missouri-grown wines over the years, the winery has won scores of awards at prominent national and international wine competitions. Blumenhof is operated today by second and third generation family. Blumenhof takes its name from the Blumenberg family’s ancestral farm in northwestern Germany. Blumenberg, which means “Court of Flowers,” is a perfect name for this winery. The Village of Dutzow, named after the founder’s estate in Germany, is the oldest German settlement in the State, and one of the first towns in Missouri to have a winery. The vineyard’s wine list includes Chambourcin, Chardonel, Cynthiana, Rayon d’Or, Seyval, Vidal and Vignoles. Blumenhof grows seven acres of Vidal, three acres of Chambourcin, and two acres of Cynthiana. Their dry white wines include a 2008 Syval and a 2008 Chardonel. Especially favored is their dry rose, the 2008 Winegarden Rose which was awarded the Silver Medal at the 2009 Mid-American Wine Competition. Two favored dry red wines are the 2008 Original Cyn and the 2008 Chambourcin. The ever popular semidry white wines include the 2009 Ray-
on d’Or, the new vintage 2009 Femme Osage, and the 2008 Missouri Weinland which received Gold Medals this year at both the Taster’s Guild International Judging and the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition. Their semi-sweet include Katy’s Blush, a 2009 Vignoles, La Charrette, a Silver Medal winner Devil’s Den Red, and their 2008 Valvin Muscat which received a Gold Medal at the 2009 Pacific Rim International Wine Competition. Blumenhof’s German heritage is apparent in more than their wines, but also in the property’s architecture and warm friendly ambiance. Their wine garden has live music in the spring, summer, and fall. In the summer the grill serves bratwurst and potato salad amongst the winery’s beautiful vineyards. There are several tasting rooms, all with the same selection, which makes the flow easy and the experience very enjoyable. Blumen means flowers in German, and Blumenhof would like to invite everyone to stop in, smell the flowers, and enjoy their world-class wines. Located in the Augusta Wine Region of Missouri Wine Country, they are minutes north of Washington, Missouri, on the north side of the Missouri River at 13699 South Highway 94. They are open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years day. Visit their website www.blumenhof. com or call 800-419-2245 for more information.

A Salon/Spa with a Purpose
When you enter Luminesce Salon you will soon feel their point of difference. The environment is relaxing, the aromas are soothing, and it is clear that their philosophy is to cater to your individual needs. Luminesce Salon is one of the few Aveda Concept Salons in the St. Louis area, which means they use only Aveda products. This is a huge benefit because each staff member is educated about the products they use. Aveda products have a strong environmental impact; the products are as natural as one can get. From the organic aromas to the way they are bottled, Aveda has addressed harvesting naturally all the way to being the first totally wind- powered manufacturing plant. In this stressful and demanding world, most of us need a place that gives us permission to unwind. Let’s start with the spa. Massages range from a stress release massage to a relaxing hot stone massage, an amazing experience where the certified massage therapist uses warm stones on pressure points to release stress and muscle tensions. They also have a steam shower in the spa for that added push over the edge; my only wish is that they would provide a ride home. Luminesce resident esthetician Amanda specializes in skincare. She offers customized facials to address your individual needs. Her personal passion is working with teens and acne relief treatments where you can see results, and it not only treats the acne symptoms, but also the causes, so skin stays clear. Another popular service is the Green Science Perfecting Plant Peel. Beyond glycolic peels, the Perfecting Plant Peel gives you instant exfoliation and radiance benefits of a 30% glycolic peel but without the associated irritation. Amanda is well versed in Aveda’s entire line of skincare and is available for complimentary skincare consultations. It’s easy to see that the entire staff is enrolled in the high-touch approach to even the hair care side of the salon/spa. With every haircut, you receive a stress release scalp massage, and when you have hair color done you receive a complimentary hot stone foot soak at the service bar while you process. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, they offered me a hand and arm massage. By this time I was thinking, stress, what stress? Is this what they call a hair spa? I think so.

Photos by Steve Drews and Alexander M. Brown Halcyon Spa is nestled in the heart of downtown, historic Augusta. The spa focuses on services to promote health and wellness, with a boutique filled with conscious living products. Halcyon Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork, LLC was established by Kathy Kessler, P.T., L.M.T. in 2001, with the emphasis on the health benefits of therapeutic massage and various forms of bodywork. Kessler began the business in her home, building a clientele of locals and tourists. The team has grown over the years to meet the client need, and Halcyon Spa recently moved to the new location with expanded spa services. Brinker and Marvel both specialize in deep tissue massage. Brakemeyer has special training in Craniosacral Therapy. Zoe Florence, LMT with two years experience, joined in 2009. DOM’S HAIR SALON
608 S. Hwy. 47, Warrenton, Missouri
636-456-7663
For fourteen years customers have chosen Dom’s Hair Salon in Warrenton to get the latest in hair cuts and styles, helping the salon earn the reputation as a premier styling destination for the trendy. Choice of a hair salon is a very personal decision based on total satisfaction and quality service. “Our clients come from as far as St. Louis, St. Charles and St. Peters, Troy, Marthasville and Washington. Hair is all we do, for men, women and children. They range from all ages, two years old to a lady from O’Fallon who is 106,” said owner Dom Pilla. Dom’s is not a spa and doesn’t want to be one. They don’t do nails or massage. Hair is what they do and they do it very well: everything from perms, colors, highlights, and lowlights to styles and cuts. They also do eyebrow arches, waxes and facial waxing. They carry a variety of hair care products from Matrix, CHI, Hempz and more. The décor reflects the modern art taste of his wife, Anna Pilla, and his own eclectic collections. Dom is an avid fly fisherman and hunter, and has some magnificent hand tied flies he made on display. A shadow box displays Dom’s valuable collection of straight razors from the German Nazi SS era, contrasting with Anna’s beloved Munch, The Scream. But the real draw is the custom leather chair Dom designed that is almost identical to the one used on Sweeny Todd. On summer mornings you will find clients enjoying coffee on his front deck while awaiting their turn in the famous chair. At Dom’s the service is impeccable, the atmosphere is inviting and the rates are affordable. All haircuts include a shampoo and blow-dry. While others charge for this additional service, they offer it free. Dom’s does an exceptional job with every type of haircut, from the latest in swing bobs to military cuts, clipper fades and flat tops. While walkins are always welcome, make an appointment so you don’t have to wait. Judy Stephens has been with Dom since the opening and has thirty-three years of styling experience. Judy is a favorite among clients for her exceptional touch and cutting edge styles. You’ll also find Brittany Click working as an apprentice to gain the experience she needs. Stop in see Brittany for a clipper cut from her. During the review Dom displayed his magical touch on two ladies. Maranna had long hair and normally wore her hair down, but sometimes wanted to wear it up. Her hair was somewhat dry from daily washing. “Often women wash their hair everyday, not realizing it’s is not needed. When you over wash, it can cause dry scalp.” She wanted a cut that would continue to give her a layered look when down but wouldn’t sacrifice the ability to wear it up. Layered hair can be a problem to wear up. Dom cut her hair so she could keep her long and short layers but look stylish with her hair up. The messy tousled up-do is the look of the year for any occasion, including weddings, proms, etc. Next up was Shana whose hair had started to lose its shape and was looking frizzy and limp. She also did not like the heaviness around her face. Solution: shaped up layers by taking off several inches to remove split ends caused by blow drying and straightening. This brought her hair together for a complete healthy and thick shape. Often when hair is cut short around the face it causes it to look very thin. Dom’s technique of razoring the hair around the face gave Shana’s hair a lift and reduced heaviness without loosing the look of thick hair. Gels and mousse used for that lifted look often causes the opposite effect and hair is left dull and heavy. Once Shana’s hair was cut and blow dried, a product called Big Sexy Hair Powder Play was lightly sprinkled over the top of her hair to create volume without weighing her hair down. Dom’s is one of the few salons where you can find this amazing styling aid. Dom’s Hair Salon is located at 608 South Highway 47 in Warrenton. They are open Monday through Friday, 9 am to 8 pm and Saturday 9 am to 5 pm. Drop by or give them a call today at 636-456-7663.

Something to Think About
“
By: James R. Blossom and Lisa T. Bautista Surviving the death of a loved one, especially a child or spouse ranks very high on the list of stress-producing life events. While a moderate amount of stress may motivate and stimulate us, a high level of stress is potentially harmful to our health. Evidence indicates that those who are bereaved have a decreased resistance to infections and other diseases, some which may even be life threatening. One study for instance, showed a striking correlation between severe stress and the onset of cancer. This stress is also likely to lead to problems in other relationships. The incidence of separation and divorce in parents who experience the death of a young child is exceptionally high. The death rate is higher for bereaved persons than others in the same age and social categories. This is especially true
Don’t feel obligated to ‘get over it’ just because others don’t understand or share your loss.
”
for the first year following the death. It is a critical period during which the health and welfare of the bereaved should be of prime concern. In order to work your way through stressful times following the loss of a loved one, there are several ways to help yourself. The most important thought is to know that you have the right to your time. Don’t feel obligated to ‘get over it’ just because others don’t understand or share your loss, or because they mistakenly believe that you should be able to get on with your life in a time frame that is convenient for them. Second, you have the right to express your emotions. There is no right way to grieve. And the process of grieving involves a wide variety of experiences and emotions that may include depression, anger, anxiety, disappointment, and more. Third, you have the right to take care of yourself. Do your very best to take care of yourself by getting plenty of rest, eating well and exercising. Fourth, you have the time to take time out. You have a right to and very likely a need for time to yourself and by yourself. Fifth, you have the right to expect support. Although your experience of grieving is uniquely yours, you do not have to go through it alone. Grief shared with others can actually bring people closer together. Last, you have the right to heal and trust. You can do it - really. Take inspiration from people you know who have made their way through grief and loss. You too, have the right to everything you need to grieve well so that you can live fully. Your loved one would want nothing less for you. James R. and Mari Blossom are owners, operators and licensed funeral directors of McCoy-Blossom Funeral Home & Cremation Center, located at 1304 Boone St. in Troy, MO. Mr. Blossom is an embalmer and Lisa T. Bautista is licensed funeral director at the facility. They can be contacted at 636-528-8244 or www.mccoyblossomfh.com.

{Ask the Expert}
Compassion and Caring Compassionate and caring leadership begins with Fran Martin and Kelly Martin-Chmiel at Martin Funeral Homes, Inc. Their goal is to achieve personal relationships with each family who needs someone to guide them through the process of planning or pre-planning a Celebration of Life service. A funeral service is about celebrating the life of someone who has passed and it is for the benefit of the ones who are still living. Each service they perform is as unique as each family they serve. Kelly and Fran encourage families to make the service as personal as possible, through video, pictures, music and hobbies. They provide access to video and music and help arrange pictures in a collage form or in frames. By using pictures, hobbies and music each family can honor the life of their loved one by celebrating the life they lived. Grief Counseling Martin Funeral Homes offers Grief Education for the bereaved.
The Grief Education meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This is an on-going, open meeting with planned topics for discussion, although many discussions are started on their own by the participants. This is a community support group of trained people from local churches. Funeral Processions
By: Kimberly Ingersoll
H
ave you ever wondered why the funeral director asks the vehicles in a procession to turn on their flashers? It is not only for your safety, it’s the law. The Missouri Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors rules and regulations state in Chapter 194, section 500-512, the laws that regulate a funeral procession. The procession must be lead by a vehicle with a circulating lamp exhibiting an amber or purple light or lens or flashing headlights. A hearse or another funeral home vehicle may be used. In Troy and many cities the police and or sheriff’s departments work hand in hand with the funeral home by providing officers to escort the procession to the place of burial. Vehicles and pedestrians must yield the right-of-way to any vehicle
in a procession at an intersection regardless of a traffic signal or sign. However, a procession must yield to any emergency vehicle or as directed by an officer. A person cannot drive between cars in a procession, join the procession to gain the right-of-way or pass the procession if there is not a passing lane. Most drivers have the utmost respect for a funeral procession. Many pull to the side of the road and I have even seen some people get out and stand beside their car as a sign of respect for the deceased and their family. If you have a question you would like me to address, please contact me at www.ingersollchapel.com or 636-462-CARE. How to Compare and Choose
Tequila
Blame it on a lack of familiarity or the fear of something new, when it comes to choosing the right tequila for the occasion, we fall into the category of the uninitiated. In order to understand the differences and similarities among tequilas, we should look at what tequila really is. Tequila is a sophisticated spirit manufactured with painstaking work. Tequileros distill and manufacture their namesake product under the all-seeing eye of Consejo Regulador del Tequila, a Mexican government-sanctioned regulatory council that maintains the highest standards for its national treasure and strictly enforces the tequila certification; which demands that its sugar be made completely from the hearts of blue agave, an indigenous succulent tequileros believe that aging longer than four years ruins the earthy flavor tones of tequilas. Water The Wonder Drug
By: Jack Val Spencer, LMT How important is water? Well considering that wars are fought over access to it, it would seem that it is pretty important. Consider also that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. The controversy over how much and what kind of water continues to rage on but there are some basics that seem to hold up to common sense, as well as research. A person should be drinking approximately one half his/her weight - in ounces - of water every single day. Certainly no less than eight cups. About a glass an hour while you are awake should keep you well hydrated. This does not include any beverage containing caffeine, carbonation or alcohol which are all diuretics and will actually REMOVE anywhere from four to eight glasses of water from your system per the same amount of that beverage. Sugar can also dehydrate you because of the need for water to dilute the amount of sugar in your system. This is especially important information for diabetics.
Water and Weight Loss
On a person note, I learned the importance of water while attending massage school. At the time, I had already given up smoking (which also requires more hydration because of the toxins it creates that need to be removed from the body). I had quit drinking caffeine and alcohol 30 years prior and was only drinking a maximum of two carbon-
Think a
ated beverages a day, neither of which contained caffeine. Consequently, when the instructor gave us the information I have just shared, I was doubtful. So, in an attempt to prove to myself (or possibly disprove what the instructor had said), I decided to conduct a little experiment on myself. Since I was supposed to be sharing this information with my clients, I acknowledged that I am not a good salesman unless I am myself sold on the idea. For the next month (surely I could do most anything for a month) I would sacrifice my soda and drink primarily water, as well as a little juice. Remember that juice is full of concentrated sugars even at best, another fact that diabetics need to realize. As someone in my sixties, I recall from my youth something that has become all but obsolete: the juice glass. In this day and age of supersizing, such a small quantity is almost unheard of. I might add that our major soft drinks, specifically CocaCola, Pepsi-Cola, and even Dr. Pepper orginated as medicinal concoctions which were dispersed by the local soda jerk/pharmacist in very small glasses. They were never intended to be consumed as Big Gulps! Anyway, a month later I discovered (much to my surprise) that: 1. I had lost about 30 pounds. 2. I had lost about five inches in my waist. 3. I had more energy than I had since I was about 20 years old. 4. The arthritis in my knee (the result of a bicycle accident

The next logical question is, of course, “what is the best kind of water to drink?” That topic will be covered in a future article or you can come by my office and I will be happy to discuss it with you. I am available around the clock seven days a week. The office is located at 241 Front Street in Troy or you can reach me at 636-528-4507 or on my personal cell at 636295-6736.

Vein Specialties
Adds Center in Washington V
ein Specialties recently added a center in Washington, Missouri, to reach more people who suffer from painful varicose veins. Dr. Norman Bein, a surgeon, dedicates his medical practice in St. Louis and Washington, Missouri, to the in-office treatment of varicose veins, spider veins, and venous disease, focusing all efforts on the patient’s individual needs. They have the latest equipment available and provide some of the most advanced procedures available in the area. Dr. Bein is a registered vascular technologist and performs his own diagnostic ultrasounds, in his office, during the initial visit for the patient’s convenience. The difference in Vein Specialties from many others is that each patient receives personalized state-of-the-art treatment and care, in the office instead of a hospital, by a board certified surgeon with 35 years of experience. Any recovery time is measured in days, not weeks. Varicose veins are enlarged veins close to the skin. Many factors such as genetics and hormones have a role in their cause. Vein disease symptoms you can see and feel. Common symptoms are pain, burning, stinging, itching, heaviness, aching, swelling, redness, skin changes, spontaneous bleeding, leg cramps and restless leg syndrome. Symptoms will only increase if left untreated.
DVT - The Silent Killer
Vein Specialties hosts free Deep Vein Thrombosis screenings in conjunction with the American Venous Forum every spring. The statistics for DVT are staggering, as blood clots in deeper veins can break loose and travel to the lungs, becoming fatal. Annually, 2.5 million people develop dangerous cases of DVT, and 600,000 people are hospitalized for Deep Vein Thrombosis. DVT is a silent killer; 200,000 people die each year from complications. The clinic also offers free Varicose and Spider Vein Screenings on certain days throughout the year. Many people suffer from enlarged veins and diffuse redness on the face. Ivy Filson, a licensed esthetician and medical assistant, is able to evaluate and treat these area as well as anti-aging treatments. While she can evaluate your skin in the Washington office, these treatments are performed in the St. Louis office where she can tailor according to your skin type. She offers Microdermabrasion (DiamondTome), Intense Pulsed Light (Limelight), Cutera Laser Genesis (Skin Tightening), and Obagi Prescription skin care regimes. Dr. Bein also offers Latisse which is FDA approved for eyelash growth and fullness. Vein Specialties is also proud to offer, from Australia, INVISIBLE ZINC sun protection. This new product to the USA produces a barrier, not a chemical filter, to block harmful UVB and UVA rays. Call 866-626-VEIN(8346) today to schedule your Vein Consultation and get ready for summer. Protect Your Skin with
Invisible Zinc
Most sunscreen manufacturers use chemicals as their active ingredients (like octyl methoxycinnamate or PABA.). Invisible Zinc®, a product developed in Australia, uses zinc oxide to provide a physical (not chemical) barrier between you and the sun without any chemical additives. It protects against both UVB and UVA rays. Though Invisible Zinc is invisible to the naked eye, the product is free of nanoparticles. The micro-fine zinc oxide is approximately 20 to 50 times larger than the size of nanoparticles used in some sunscreens. Whereas many sunscreens work by being absorbed into the skin, zinc oxide stays on the surface of the skin.

Will Your Knees Carry the Load?
I
By: Susan Smith, PT
magine yourself carrying 15 pound weights on each shoulder every day, all day. Imagine how you would feel when getting in and out of the car, going up and down stairs, carrying groceries. If you’re a mere 10 pounds overweight, that’s the kind of stress you’re placing on your joints. Knees and hips are built to last a lifetime, but every pound that you add to your frame multiplies by three to six times the force on these joints with each step you take. The message is clear: if your joints are feeling young and healthy now, a good way to keep them pain free is to maintain a healthy weight. A study by a team of specialists at Johns Hopkins Medical Center found a direct correlation between body mass index (BMI) and significant pain in the knee, hip and back. Other studies indicate that overweight women are four times more likely than normal weight women to develop osteoarthritis of the knee. For overweight men, the risk is five times greater. There are more than 100 types of arthritis, but osteoarthritis, often known as a wear and tear disease, is by far the most common, affecting about 27 million Americans. Scientists are not sure what causes this degenerative joint disease, but after genetics and age, obesity is the most important risk factor. The added stress placed on joints is the most obvious reason, but excess weight apparently affects joints in more indirect ways as well. Even in non-weight-bearing joints such as those in the hand, overweight persons have a higher rate of arthritis. If you’re overweight and haven’t felt joint pain yet, it may be just a matter of time. By age 40, about 90 percent of persons show signs (on x-rays) indicating early arthritis, but the disease develops gradually and usually begins causing pain and stiffness after age 50. At first, you may feel these symptoms after a hard day’s work in the garden or for a few minutes after you get out of bed in the morning. Symptoms vary from person to person, but some individuals eventually develop pain and stiffness so severe that they find it difficult to manage every day activities. It’s not always clear why arthritis progresses in some individuals rather than others. There is no known cure, but weight loss and exercise are nearly always recommended to help control symptoms. Whether you have arthritic joints or not, it should be clear that it’s more comfortable walking, exercising or performing routine daily activities if you’re not subjecting your joints to an excessively heavy load.
Weight Loss as Treatment
If your joints are already beginning to ache, it makes sense to take a load off of them. In fact, weight loss is usually a major component of arthritis treatment. One study found that a weight loss of 15 pounds gave patients better relief from their symptoms than pain relieving medication. Focusing on overweight arthritis patients age 60 and over, the Arthritis Diet and Activity Promotion Trial (ADAPT), found that subjects in a program combining modest weight loss and moderate exercise showed significant improvement in knee pain and mobility. Exercise is ordinarily an important part of any weight loss program, but persons with joint pain generally don’t feel like exercising or doing anything much that provokes pain. There is also a widespread myth that too much exercise will “wear out” joints. In fact, lack of physical activity makes muscles weaker, leading to more rapid progression of arthritis. And without physical activity, weight gain is virtually inevitable. The solution is to replace this negative cycle with a positive one. Regular exercise helps you lose weight, which in turn eases pain and makes it easier to continue exercising. A prior injury, such as a fracture or torn ligament, is often a factor in the breakdown of cartilage that characterizes osteoarthritis. And persons (such as carpet layers) who subject their joints to repetitive activities such as kneeling or squatting have a high risk of developing osteoarthritis of the knees. Exercise–even long-distance running– is not one of those high-risk activities. Data from the Framingham Offspring Cohort study, tracking subjects from 1993 to 2005, found no difference between those who ran and those who engaged in lower-impact activities such as walking. They were equally likely to get osteoarthritis of the knees. An Australian study, however, found that distance runners and others performing vigorous weight-bearing exercise actually had thicker, healthier cartilage in their knees than those who exercised more moderately. Vigorous activity improves blood circulation to the cartilage, providing the nutrients the knee needs while strengthening muscles around the joint, providing support. For persons with significant joint pain and arthritis, of course, some alteration of activities is often necessary. Your doctor or physical therapist can help you choose lower impact activities, such as swimming or biking and show you appropriate stretching and range of motion routines. Some kind of regular exercise is needed to help control weight, preserve muscle tone and provide proper circulation to joints. Weight loss, whether through exercise, dieting or a combination of the two, has been found to reduce the symptoms of osteoarthritis, but not necessarily stop the progression of arthritis.
Susan Smith, PT, is the Director of Rehabilitation Services at Lincoln County Medical Center in Troy. Improving Your
Eyeglass Image I
By: Barbara Cashion, optician/owner of Here’s 2 Eyes in Troy, MO
n today’s corporate world it’s not enough just to know your business, your image is often what will get you in the front door. I would first like to address those men out there who look several years younger than they are. While in our later years many of us strive to look younger, being young and looking even younger can hurt that first impression. I have even experiences with men who have recently graduated from college eager to enter the business world but instead look like they should be entering high school! What can they do to look more professional? One option is to purchase glasses with non prescription glasses to make your appearance look a little older and more serious. Remember, these don’t have to be the glasses your father wore. There are many styles, colors, shapes and sizes to fit your style. The same goes for all of the older gentleman out there. There was a time when a lot of the frames available to men all looked pretty much the same. You know how they looked-they either had the extra bar across the bridge or they were the old horned rim, thick plastic frames (which have returned in popularity as the “retro” look). While these looks are okay for some, you have a lot more choices now. Choices include a variety of materials known for their strength and durability, as well as being capable of holding most lens materials. Remember those glass lenses that “weighed a ton”? You also have choices here. You can select from lighter weight lenses that change with the sun or another option is to select a frame with a magnetic clip. Worried about the clip scratching your glasses? Don’t be. Remember, these are made to go with the frame allowing a space between the clip and the lens to prevent scratches. Remember, you only get one chance at that first impression. Don’t let them remember you as “Mr. Magoo” or “that nerd with the tape on his glasses.” Now that we’ve talked those of you in the corporate world about those of you who prefer to get your hands dirty at both work and play. As mentioned before, there is a wide variety of lenses and frames available. Baseball fan? Like those sunglasses players they wear while they are playing? Do you really like them but don’t think you can have them with a prescription in them? Think again. There are sunglass frames out there that are safety approved and can be fit with your prescription. Going in and out of a building or car/truck a lot on the job? You may want to have sun sensitive lenses made with your prescription. Remember certain tint colors work better for different weather conditions and times of the day. Consult with your eye care professional for what will work best for you.

Have you ever wondered what you can do to help heal yourself naturally? Besides all the prescribed necessary tasks of eating right and exercising, sometimes even those things are not enough alone. Wouldn’t it be nice to have an alternative tool in your mind and body to use whenever you needed to do so for yourself and your loved ones? Denise Krause-Albritton, Usui Reiki Master, has just that tool and is able to teach others to have it also for both personal use and for a career of choice. Denise has studied the Usui Reiki since 2007 and has reached master level in an attunement that was performed in Sedona, AZ by her Usui Reiki Master, Lucinda Sohn, of St. Louis, MO. What is Reiki? Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction, relaxation and natural healing. It was rediscovered in the 1900’s by Dr. Usui and has been handed down generations and expanded into the western world through teachings and attunements of sacred symbols used for healing. honors all religions of the world as one under God. All are seen as equal as God intended and therefore there are no judgments and all are welcome to learn Reiki. To experience Reiki is like having a warm, loving sensation in one’s body and a feeling of drifting off into some place that is very peaceful and joyful. It is the God-Consciousness called “Rei” that guides the life energy called “Ki” in the practice we call Reiki. Reiki can be defined as “Spiritually Guided Life Energy”. Reiki is performed similar to the old-fashioned “Laying on of the Hands” technique. Anyone who performs healings already, have reported an amplified experience after receiving a Reiki attunement. Absolutely anyone can learn and be attuned with Reiki for their own personal daily use, for their family and friends or as a professional healing tool alone or added to their bodywork techniques. Reiki is a wonderful addition to massage therapy as it gives an uplifting experience to the clients; they tend to leave more relaxed and energized simultaneously. It is truly an amazing tool of natural healing. “I’ve been a part and witnessed an incredible healing of an 84-year-old who had fallen and broken their hip in three places,” Denise explained. “The diagnosis was 8-12 weeks of healing and therapy. The patient actually healed herself with the initiation of all the Reiki practitioners and Masters facilitating the healing within their body. Simply put, Amazing!” To be a part of the way of the future of healing, simply attend an introduction class of Reiki to determine if Reiki resonates with you before committing to a Level I class. Denise teaches “Intro to Reiki and the Angels” classes. She enjoys teaching that the guided Angels help assist her during the Reiki healings. People find the knowledge fascinating as she teaches the information Doreen Virtue, an Angel Therapist, teaches in her publications. Classes are available in Washington and Warrenton. A level I “Intro” class is scheduled for May and Junes. Call Denise to reserve your space in the class that is most convenient to attend at 636-359-0225.

Patients First Launches
New Cancer Center ment, which is very calming. Dr. Cohen has enjoyed joining the Patients First Washington Campus, and says Washington is “the America I grew up in” and has found it very welcoming. He and his wife Stephanie have two daughters. He feels that Patients First is a first-class organization, and while “a lot are building [new facilities], not many are as good as this one.” Dr. Michael C. Van Tuyl, Radiation Oncologist, joins Dr. Cohen, at the Cancer Center. Prior to attending medical school at the University of Nevada School of Medicine, he completed five years active duty in the US Navy, and then in the Reserves assigned to the Marine Corp Special Forces becoming a Navy diver, while completing his undergraduate studies in Reno.
The Cancer Center team at the new addition to the Washington campus. Patients First Health Care, founded in 1998, is a multi-specialty, patient-focused health services company based in Washington, Missouri. Their mission is to meet our community’s health care needs from diagnosis to prevention, treatment and recovery. In the PFHC Cancer Center, a new addition at the Washington Campus, the mission is to deliver innovative, patient-focused cancer treatment and care. Cancer can be difficult and draining. The Cancer Center is designed to bring all treatment together in a state of the art facility where the patient’s care is first priority. This makes the process of diagnosis, treatment and prevention as simple, efficient and caring as possible. Physicians Isaac Cohen and Michael C. Van Tuyl lead the treatment programs of Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Infusion therapy. Dr. Isaac Cohen will oversee all medical oncology and infusion therapy protocols for patients at the Cancer Center. Dr. Cohen, a specialist in medical oncology and hematology, received his medical degree from the University of Illinois, Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine in Chicago. His internship and residency in Internal medicine was completed
at Evanston Hospital – an affiliate of Northwestern Medical Center in Evanston, IL, followed by a twoyear medical Oncology Fellowship at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Dr. Cohen is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. He has been a practicing hematologist/oncologist for 23 years and sees a wide array of patients with various malignant tumors and blood disorders. His special interests include breast, lung and colorectal cancers as well as lymphomas. He is dedicated to the comprehensive and compassionate care of individuals battling cancer, but also takes a keen interest in the followup of cancer survivors. Dr. Cohen’s philosophy for the PFHC Cancer Center is that it should be stressless for the patients undergoing therapy and their families, by bringing together streamlined, comprehensive, and more efficient treatment in a state of the art facility. The Cancer Center is patient friendly, open, bright and provides a warm friendly environment for the patients. Patients like this, as it makes cancer, and its treatment, less obtrusive in their lives. Dr. Cohen says, “There are very few Centers like this, and what sets it apart is the design and the arrange-
SPRING/SUMMER 2010
He retired from the Navy in October 2004, at which time he was the chief of Radiation Oncology at Portsmouth, Virginia and the senior Radiation Oncologist in the Navy. He has served as both the primary and secondary investigator for the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and participated in many clinical trials through the cooperative group process, which included the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Van Tuyl welcomes “the opportunity, and rare chance – to create the wheel from the ground up” with the Patients First Health Care Cancer Center. He wants to see the Cancer Center do open clinical trials and feels the support for this “is phenomenal.” To handle that challenge, the center will need to meet several criteria, such as to establish a track record, a review process and an affiliation with another Institution. These are high expectations, and he does have benchmarks established, but feels by starting fresh with the new Cancer Center, the process should be faster. He has the experience to build such a program. Dr. Van Tuyl feels the best test for the standard of care is “this is the place I would want to go myself” and that the Cancer Center will be able to provide every type of treatment needed. The Center provides a serene setting for patients receiving comprehensive cancer treatment. Patients First Health Care’s goal is to provide top quality, patient-focused care. “We pride ourselves on having the most compassionate physicians and nurses overseeing your treatment.” The PFHC team is highly skilled in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer and cancer-related diseases.
