West James Courts To be known as the first in any category of business is an achievement all in its own. A privilege enjoyed by the rare and deserving few, it’s a claim that can be made by West James Courts, world’s first indoor racquet club with both tennis and racquetball courts. “We were one of the first clubs ever built in the St. Louis area, but the first to offer multiple courts for both sports,” said John Holliday, owner of West James Courts who masterminded the idea for developing a multi-sport indoor club that would take the sports to new heights.

Located six miles south of I-70 off of Hwy 94 at1330 Harvestowne Industrial Drive in St. Charles, West James Courts is a 47,000 square foot fully climate controlled membership racquet club offering tennis, racquetball, pickle ball, wallyball, and fitness in its 12 world class courts. “The goal, plan, purpose and intent were to make tennis a more affordable sport for a wider economic spectrum of the public. If you make it cost less without diminishing the amenities and still operate a first class club, you will draw more new people to a wonderful social game that can provide lifelong benefits of health and fitness,” said John. To ask if he has achieved his goal after being in business for over 38 years was almost rhetorical. “In today’s economy less and less people are able to afford anything. But I think we are doing something right, because we have been open for nearly four decades,” stated John. According to John, West James Courts was also one of the first indoor clubs in the world to offer blue tennis courts. “Long before Flushing Meadows had blue courts, we had blue courts,” As to why John explains, “Studies showed that blue as a court color was soothing to the players and onlookers alike and allowed for the yellow ball to stand out against the background, and I like blue”

The glamour of embellished lace accents the bodice as a sensational fit through the hip area combines with caught-up detailing throughout the soft shimmer satin skirt. The Bordeaux taffeta bodice featuring innovative pleating is stunning on Brittany's gown.

Tiffany looks flawless in this slim A-line gown with corset closure. Exuding red carpet influence, this alluring stretch satin silhouette flaunts a lace shoulder strap glowing with beaded embellishments. Asymmetrical ruching flatters the bodice and drifts into the skirt, finishing with a contemporary balloon hem train.

ridal Trends

By: Angie Ruckel, The Wedding Shoppe, Troy As noted on Bridalbeauty.com, the spring 2011 runways were full of soft romantic gowns for this upcoming season. These styles are so beautiful they will spill over into 2012. Dresses with skirts engulfed in giant cabbage roses, delicate silk petals that fluttered up and down entire length of gowns, and even dresses that were actually constructed like a giant flowers were popping up on the runways. There is an abundance of tulle, chiffon, organza, super-light taffeta and lace. Many dresses are mere layers upon layers of featherweight materials that will leave you feeling like you are floating down the aisle. For the first time in many seasons, we witnessed a return to big ball gowns. They are light and airy and crafted from sheer, delicate fabrics like tulle, organza and point dĘźesprit. The big skirts are balanced with tiny, form-fitting bodices that highlight the shoulders, the bust and a feminine, defined waist. The short dress has become an important option for brides now. No longer just a last minute addition for destination ceremonies, these dresses are serious and well designed so you would never feel short-changed if you opted for less length. The hair has become bigger and fuller for the wedding day. Brides are choosing big flowers, feathers and jewels to adorn their hair. Veils are long or short and with a lot of pouf. The small hat with a face net is hugely popular, and with all the European influences from the Royal Wedding this look is here to stay for a while.

{

For all those future brides, 2012 will be the return of sleeves and lace. Haute Couture styles with exquisite laces and silks and sleeves will be fitted and delicate. The vintage style pill box hat looks to be moving in to fashion and is perfect for the winter wedding. ď Ž

Wedding Cake

Wedding cake design should not only reflect your personal style but also be in sync with the menu, décor and the theme of your reception. As a bride it is often difficult to find a designer who will meld your suggestions with their creativity to bake a masterpiece worthy of your wedding. That’s not the case when you visit Ozenkoski’s Bakery in St. Peters and consult with award winning cake designer

William Ozenkoski to order his "Tie The Knot" wedding cake.

For nearly four decades, the Ozenkoski name has been synonymous with amazing Polish confections. Started by Bill and his brother Stan in 1963 in Ferguson at Cool Valley, this fullfledged bakery quickly became an icon in North County and served the area for several years. Wanting to introduce their unique delicacies to St. Charles County, Bill and wife, Jennifer re-opened the bakery in 2008 at its current location on Mid Rivers Mall Drive offering an incredible variety of cakes and baked goods for every occasion. Ozenkoski’s signature taste comes from their wonderfully moist cake and Bill Ozenkoski’s very own velvety and fluffy butter

24 I IMPULSE I Summer 2011

cream icing, both made from scratch. Discovered by trial and error, their butter cream icing is a pure marvel of texture and taste. Used in all their cake orders, this butter cream icing is unlike any you have tasted. Designing breathtaking cakes for over a hundred weddings a year is not an easy task. “But the process becomes a lot easier when we sit

down for a complimentary taste test with the bride and determine her likes,” says Bill. The brides can try the basic white, yellow, marble and devil’s food or sample the red velvet, German chocolate and even the carrot cake. “I tell brides who are often pressured to choose by a family member that this is your cake and your wedding; it represents your likes and dislikes.” According to Jennifer, two of the biggest problems brides face is the availability of the reception hall and the priest. Since the average booking time for the cake is several months to a year in advance, she recommends as soon as you have your venue and your priest, book your cake decorator. The largest wedding cake that Ozenkoski’s have designed served over three hundred guests, but most Tie The Knot cakes they create are for one to two hundred guest weddings. A naturally talented cake designer, Bill loves working closely with brides to ensure all their needs are met. “Departure from the norm is my specialty even if it means you want confetti in your cake. If you see a picture in a magazine that you like, bring it in or sketch it for ideas,” he says. Over the years, Bill has won taste test and design awards for his Tie The Knot cakes. One was for a stunning cake he designed with foodsafe rhinestones on a custom revolving turntable that he built himself. And go ahead and eat all your wedding cake, he says, because

every bride gets a free anniversary cake next year. Bill warns against freezing your cake, “You cannot freeze a cake for a year and expect it to be good at all. It may look okay, but it is definitely not suitable for consumption.” Speaking about the current cake trends, Jennifer says, “Brides have gotten away from traditional cake designs. So anything goes; they want what they want and are willing to express their tastes through their wedding cake.” Ozenkoski’s Bakery is located at 350 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in St. Peters and can be contacted at 636-387-7044 and on the web at www.tietheknotcakes.com. 

Wedding Flowers By: FTD Master Florist, Cathy Kohensky The summer bride is lucky. With almost every flower in vibrant colors in bloom, rest easy - you have a world of options open to you. From traditional favorites like roses, sunflowers, tuberoses, daisies, zinnias and gerbera daisies to exotics like Asiatic lilies, Bells of Ireland, freesia, iris, chrysanthemums, and English lavender, choosing the flowers for your bouquet or wedding is an unforgettable adventure.

LAVENDER

Summer weddings are all about bright, beautiful color and enchanting summer wedding-flowers like dahl-

ias, snapdragons or even roses in cream, red, white or hot pink create an amazing palette. A delicate placement of these brightly-colored flowers can make your wedding venue look like a flower garden.

More choices than you need, one choice to make... Lisa Nikole Studio

Your choice of flowers will depend on a few factors: Will you be getting married in a garden, beach, chapel or a cathedral? What are your colors? And, of course, your dÊcor. You should also consider the time of the day. Late afternoon weddings are more informal than mornings and an array containing wildflowers, daisies, sunflower and Queen Anne’s Lace provides you with bold colors to bring out the magic. Lilies are considered very formal flowers. One of the most stunning formal wedding bouquets you can have is an arrangement with nothing but calla lilies. Early summer weddings are a great time to incorporate various shades of pink, lavender and purple into your decorations. Roses are some of the most traditional wedding flowers because their

Beach Weddings typically encompass softer colors of whites, blues and yellows. Blue hydrangeas, white roses and yellow gerbera daisies are excellent options.

Tropical-Themed weddings are quite popular during the summer months. Tropical flowers tend to have bold shapes and dazzling colors that display a striking contrast on a lush green background. If you want your summer wedding flowers to be truly stunning, consider going with tropical blooms such as rare orchids in shades of lavender and fuscia, or ranunculus and peonies. These flowers can add exotic appeal to your floral arrangements.

striking color and effect are hard to match. If you are planning a late summer wedding, you may take advantage of the transition to autumn by incorporating warm colors such as strong yellows, oranges and reds into your bouquets and wedding flower arrangements. Think along the lines of red and orange gerbera daisies, roses, sunflowers and snapdragons. Coordinating your flowers to the key colors of the wedding party

and your dĂŠcor is always the first step. And seeking the professional advice of a florist can mean the difference between a wedding that is mediocre and a wedding that is delightful, romantic and classy. Summer is the season where life is at its best and brightest and flowers are the most effective means to express the joy and happiness of your wedding. Enjoy your wedding and let your flowers tell the story. FTD Master Florist Cathy Kohensky is the owner of A Moment of Grace Florist, the winner of The Knot Best of Weddings 2008 & 2009. JEWELRY If you are looking for the hottest fashionable and unique engagement or wedding ring, Gabs, Etc. Jewelry has everything from the classic solitaire to vintage glamour. Finding the perfect ring doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. With forty years experience, the knowledgeable GIA certified staff (Gemological Institute of America) always take the time to answer any questions you have and provide you the information you need to select your perfect piece with confidence. One of the popular styles for the blushing brides of the 2011 season is the halo paved semi-mount. They are available for any cut of stone (round, princess, oval, etc). The halo style ring has the appeal of the vintage look, and can give the illusion of a larger center stone that catches everyone’s eye! Another timeless design is the raised setting. The lofty design contains accent stones but keeps the spotlight on the center stone where it belongs. A new, wildly popular style is a semi-mount that gives the appearance the accent stones are draped in a delicate ribbon or bow. The elegant single solitaire is a tried but true design that never goes out of style. Colored diamonds are increasing in popularity and demand. They come in every color of the rainbow. The most sought after are the yellow, blue, and chocolate (brown). Black diamonds are popular in pendants and earrings. The consumer should be aware that there are both natural colored diamonds and treated color diamonds (“white” diamonds treated to achieve a desired color). Natural colored diamonds are rare; the majority of the colored diamonds on the market today are treated stones. The fashionable styles that the trendy groom is wearing include cobalt chrome, a white metal whose appearance is compared to the more pricey platinum. Since the white color isn’t just a plating, it will stay white forever. Another benefit is that it is more scratch-resistant than titanium bands. To show their individuality, the guys are choosing rings with engraved patterns of scroll

work or even a flame design. Men wanting to add a little flash to their wedding bands are choosing to add either round or princess cut diamonds. Gold bands in either white or yellow never go out of style and are still the most versatile in that it they be easily sized, buffed, and polished to look brand new. Matching comfort fit bands are available for men and women in most of the metal choices. They have a rounded finish inside the wedding band so that it will not pinch the skin of the finger. In turn this provides comfort for constant wear. Gabs, etc is a family owned fine jewelry store with 44 years of experience. All the jewelry is repaired on-site; they specialize in custom design jewelry and restoration of vintage jewelry. Most repairs can be completed in one day, even sometimes while you wait. Gabs, etc. is located at 4229 N. St. Peters Parkway, St Peters, MO. They can be reached at (636) 939-9500 or visit them online at Gabsetc.com or on Facebook. SALON REVIEWS

Salon de Christé If you were to describe Salon de Christé in a few words, avant-garde style and impeccable service would make the top of the list. But what differentiates this trendsetting salon from its peers is the product of salon veterans Bob and Lynn Miller’s continued emphasis on education for their stylists. In 1997, development of Salon de Christé was a natural choice for the couple, who combined Bob’s plethora of knowledge in every aspect of the business as vice president of sales for Matrix with Lynn’s years of experience as a renowned Matrix educator to provide clients a truly memorable experience. Years of exponential growth has allowed this premier 6300 square feet St. Peters salon to add two more locations – an amazing 11,000 square feet free standing salon on West Clay with large areas devoted to hair, spa and education and the New Designers at Salon de Christé on Mid Rivers Mall Drive, featuring the hottest new stylists in St. Louis and St. Charles. “The best part of this business is that when women come to us they leave with a sense of confidence they feel more beautiful, prettier and lot better about themselves,” says Abbey Gurley, Marketing Director. “We create those feelings for guests, this is where they come to get away; they feel comfort-

able here to unwind and let go of their day to day worries and stress.” Visit any of their fabulous locations and you can experience the warmth of their greeting, their undivided attention to detail and their extraordinary styles, a few reasons that have contributed to Salon De Christe being named by 101 HAIRSTYLES MAGAZINE as "The best of the best U.S.A. salons" in 2001. And for their phenomenal growth, they were named as one of "America’s fastest growing salons” by SALON TODAY magazine. Locally the salon was named 'The Official Hairstylists' for the Saint Louis Rams Cheerleaders, and has been ranked by the St. Charles County Business Record as the 'Number One Salon and Spa in St. Charles County.' With three locations and 150 expertly trained professionals, Salon de Christé provides a variety of services to some 5,000 plus guests every month. Aquage and Aveda are the salon’s primary product lines while their services include hair care, Keratin complex smoothing therapy, nail enhancements, natural nail care, make up, skin care, waxing, massage therapy, body treatments, reflexology, spa packages, extensions and many others. It’s notable that Bob was one of the founders of the Aquage line of beauty products. To encourage constant learning, the salon has set up education funds stylists can use to take classes both in-house and externally. From trips to Chicago to learn and compete with the best designers in the business to spa education cruises in the Caribbean, the professionals at Salon de Christé ensure that they are always up on the latest trend. “There is no other salon in the region that puts stylist education first like we do. And the added benefit is our new techniques keep us ahead of the curve of other salons.” says Abbey, who is integrally involved in the operation of the salon. We asked a few guests how they would rate the salon. “On a scale of one to ten in all aspects they are a ten,” said a guest who has patronized the salon since their inception.

Bob and Lynn feel that it is more of a personal relationship with their guests instead of a business one. The staff resonates the feeling that they are one big family and they want to make their guests feel that way too. Providing a very high level of care in a comfortable yet unpretentious atmosphere has helped make Salon de Christé a leader in the beauty industry. This legendary salon is also forerunner when it comes to giving back to the communities they serve. With highly popular events like St. Baldrick’s which is held on St. Patrick’s Day during the Cottleville Parade, participants raise money by shaving off their hair to support children fighting cancer. A bride booking an appointment for her wedding day can rest assured her stylists will have absolutely everything she needs to look her very best. And when that day arrives, nothing is more rewarding to the stylists than to see you walking out to go your wedding-- a transformation of beauty, grace and grandeur. At Salon de Christé, every new guest receives a gift bag with a comment card, menu of services, a $10 coupon for their next visit and a travel size shampoo and conditioner. “We use the response to provide a better experience. We are not going to hit it 100% all the time. I look at a comment as an opportunity to improve. If you are not completely happy, call us and let us know and we are going to fix it. This is how we become better,” says Abbey. Because ladies tend to choose stylists from recommendations, the salon knows the value of service above and beyond. The guests are also encouraged to call the leave a message

on the stylists' voice mail to let them know about their salon visit. “We ensure all lines of communication are open.” With three locations and hundreds of stylists it is fairly easy to land an appointment at your desired time, but it is advisable to book early for nights and weekends. Treat your loved ones, employees, vendors and clients with the gift of health and beauty with a gift certificate to Salon De Christe, available both on location and online at www.salondechriste.com. Wedding Hair Trends by Domenico Pilla 2011 has turned out to be a wonderful year for weddings. With the royal wedding spurring the trends in a new direction, today’s brides have it made when it comes to chic wedding dos. After several years of beachy bridal hair, the trend has swung back towards a more elegant and timeless look. Smooth chignons, braided buns, and other classic pulledback hairstyles make a wonderful accompaniment to the 50s gowns which are so popular this year. They give brides a sophisticated, lady-like appearance which is absolutely gorgeous. Your bridal hair should match with the shape of your face and should complement your gown, veil, shoes, the wedding color scheme and the overall wedding ambience. And depending on your personal style and liking, you may suggest to the hairdresser the bridal hair style which you want. Here are a few ideas:

FASCINATORS As you saw, fascinators were very popular at the royal wedding. They are perfect as a modern twist to a vintage-inspired look. For a striking and unique style, check out the vintage birdcage veil headpieces on ETSY.com. Keep things manageable during your reception and opt for an alternate headpiece to add something new to the reception gown.

36 I IMPULSE I Summer 2011

Chignon The polished chignon is the ultimate new bridal hairstyle. Classic, ladylike, and sophisticated, it will complement any wedding gown. The ideal way to do it is with a little bit of height on the top and the crown. Careful, keep it very subtle and even, so you don't look like you are wearing a Bump-it! A single large hair ornament is the perfect finishing detail for a chignon. Tuck a fresh gardenia into the side of it, or add some drama with a spray of feathers. Gorgeous! Bling Make your style dazzle by adding crystal pins and combs, dazzling hair clips, gleaming bobby pins, thin metallic hair bands or sparkling hair sticks. Hair bling works for long and short hair; it’s a great way to add something special to a pixie cut or a French twist. Beehive-Inspired Wedding hair stylists are inspired by

TIARAS A jeweled tiara will elevate your gown and create a more formal look. Ideal for brides with long hair worn swept back and set elegantly, the jeweled tiara will make you feel like a princess. Have your stylist add texture and body to the hair and backcomb the top section of the hair for more height in front. This section will be secured with pins and the tiara while the remaining hair falls down the back.

VINTAGE GLAM Inspired by the past with the classic long hair, reminiscent of silverscreen legends and cascading down the back or up in a French twist, the modern pin up girl look is as timeless as the 40s Hollywood icons. chignon hybrid that combines volume with a slightly messy feel to create modern drama for a bride. Perfect for spring or summer, your stylist can add thin gold headbands to create a goddess-like up do. Ponytail A ponytail, whether high and modern or clean and dressed up, is easy to manage on your special day. Today you will see the ponytail set at the crown for a cleaner application that is perfect for a wedding. Whimsical Whimsical may not belong in the wedding hair vocabulary, but if you are envisioning a magical, ethereal and unworldly look for your wedding, the forest fairy hair might be for you. Warning, this hairstyle is not for the faint of heart and definitely not designed for humid climates. There is no telling how long this do will stay after all the texturizing, curling and teasing prior to setting it but it is astonishingly beautiful and gives you the hairstyle fit for an out of this world wedding. A little bit of pre-wedding advice: Book your appointment early with your stylist to get your hair trimmed about one to two weeks before your wedding. Even if you are keeping it long, trimming will keep the ends tidy, and is easier to style. If you need to color your hair and you are trying out a new shade, it is also advisable to do it in advance, never the day before! At least if it turns out disastrous, you still have some time to save yourself. On the day of your wedding, wear a button-up shirt so that you can change easily into your gown after your hair is styled. Why Buy

When You Can Rent?

by Patra Taylor When it comes to planning your wedding, a professional party rental company can be your greatest ally in ensuring your special day becomes more memorable for both you and your guests. Party supplies are the back bone of every event; without them, it just wouldn't be a party. In choosing the right supply store, seek rental companies that are experts in the business, with a proven track record of organizing several hundred weddings. From canopy tents to grills to buffet and bar equipment, rental stores have everything you'll need for your wedding. They can offer you several styles of table rentals, chair rentals, linen rentals, china and flatware. But before renting any tablecloths, china, silverware, glassware, tables, chairs, concession equipment, dance floor, and catering equipment, consult and visit the showroom to ensure all the equipment is in good condition. Variety makes your party unforgettable for your guests. Look for products of different varieties. Be unique in your rental choice. If you plan wonderful designs and colors your guests might even ask you where you got the idea. Try to rent some unusual items like popcorn machines, cotton candy machines, dance floors, silverware, wonderful china, etc. Considering these items can even enhance the beauty of your event and also the party mood. Before you decide, you should know what can and can't be rented. Don't rent unnecessary items. Rent a backdrop for your stage. Used properly, it can tie your entire wedding decor together. You can use your theme as the backdrop by arranging flowers in your colors to make it look more stunning. The center piece is also a very important part of a wedding reception. Make it more attractive and beautiful by adding candles. Floating and aroma candles create a soothing and dramatic effect. Your wedding rental will arrange a great centerpiece at your request. Remember, putting too much color or variety does not make the event beautiful; it is your style and aesthetics that make it more exquisite. The right source of lighting can add a fantasy feel to any wedding. The use of candles as lighting gives a surreal feel and a sense of romance. They also reduce the harshness that bright lights tend to give. Your rental company can provide multiple types of candelabras, candle holders, special lighting that is used for focus on the bride and groom or used to accent the wedding cake, fountains or special decorations. Continuing the candles on tables and out of the way places will enhance the romantic atmosphere. Lighting can be used to light the way to the reception as well as during the reception for safety and fun. Give your first dance a special feeling by renting a disco ball that spins and gives off subtle lighting changes while dancing. No matter how they are used, wedding lights definitely add to the softness and beauty of the setting. Mother Nature doesn't have to be the spoiler of your wedding due to inclement weather. Your party rental store can provide you with tents, canopies, patio or portable heaters and spot coolers to keep your guests cozy and Mother Nature at bay. The cost of using party rentals is affordable especially when compared to having a wedding planner who will more than likely use the same services. And when it comes to staying within your wedding budget, renting is by far more cost effective than buying. Patra Taylor is owner of Garden Gate Part Rental, the premier Westplex party rental store. Garden Gate Party Rental is located at 651 S. Main Street in Troy, MO and can be contacted at 636-462-5665 and on the web at www.gardengatepartyrental.com 

The staff at SS Nutrition is committed to improving the health of people from all walks of life, including men, women, young adults, everyday fitness enthusiasts, high school and college athletes, as well as bodybuilders. Each of their employees are extremely knowledgeable and take the time with each client to pinpoint their health and fitness goals in order to find the best program, products and supplements for them to achieve those goals. They carry only brand name products, unlike so many other competitors. Others try to reduce cost by making their own products. This in return can reduce effectiveness. SS Nutrition carries top brand names at an everyday lower prices. This is what sets us apart from everyone else. When it comes to the REAL nutritional needs of bodybuilders and athletes alike, there is little doubt what "legitimate" science has to say about different supplements. Unfortunately, this has little to do with the marketing message spread by most sellers. The competition between companies is fierce and the drive to sell more by differentiating a product by any means necessary (whether it's legitimate science or not) is prevalent to say the least. That’s why SS Nutrition sticks with only the best brand names and makes them available to everyone. Nothing is hidden or reduced. Join them every weekend for free taste testings. Friday evening court time, from 5pm until close is open to the public at the above rates with no membership required or guest fee charged. With members’ ages ranging from 6 to over 80 years young, the club enjoys a loyalty among its members that is unparalleled among private rac-

quet clubs. According to John, the appeal of racquet sports is still high. “Tennis remains an enduring favorite among all ages. Between social players and interclub competitors from all age groups, our programs are doing well in the club,” said John. But another fastest growing racquet sport is pickle ball. Invented in the 1960s in Seattle, this fun game is played on a modified tennis court. It requires very minimal equipment to play this fun sport; mainly an inexpensive paddle , a wiffle ball and court shoes. “This has contributed to the meteoric rise in the popularity of this sport. I like it because it’s not physically draining, and has become popular in retirement communities,” said John. The game involves strategies that include lobbing, overhead slams, passing drive shots from the baseline and fast volley exchanges at the net. It is fast paced action yet not too taxing on the body. Both the tennis players and racquetball players can transition into the game quite gracefully. “Wally ball is another sport that is popular. Played in our converted racquetball courts by 2 to 4 players per side the sport shares a few rules with volleyball and is exciting to play.”

JUICY TAN Juicy Tan in Wentzville has more to offer than great tasting smoothies and beautifully bronzed skin. In a class of its own, they are a very innovative business that is conscious of your overall health and well- being. “Offering tanning and smoothies in one business may seem a bit different, but it works for our customers,” says Peggy Daseler, owner of Juicy Tan. “It’s not just about looking good but it’s also about feeling good as well.” During our visit, Peggy wanted to share some the healthful benefits of both her products: Vitamin D Vitamin D is necessary for good health. The best and easiest source of vitamin D is light; almost 99% of the vitamin D we make comes from light exposure, whether it’s from the sun or a tanning bed. Tanning increases your vitamin D levels and decreases your risk of many life threatening diseases and conditions. Americans are increasingly becoming vitamin D deprived, resulting in an increased risk of cancer, heart disease, and PMS symptoms. Chronic diseases ranging from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, flu to tuberculosis, schizophrenia, rickets and osteoporosis are exagger-

ated by shortages of vitamin D. Current research has implicated vitamin D deficiency as a major factor in the pathology of at least 17 varieties of cancer as well as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, depression, chronic pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, birth defects, periodontal disease, and more. A Georgetown University clinical study has added to the already-impressive number of studies showing that higher vitamin D blood levels reduce a woman's risk of breast cancer by as much as 85 percent. What is keeping you from getting the amounts of vitamin D that your body needs? Smoothies Our smoothies are made with real fruit and are packed with good ingredients. Whether you are bulking up or slimming down we have a smoothie for you. There are low carb, sugar fee and non-fat alternatives. If you don’t see the smoothie you want on our menu, just ask and we will customize one for you. Milk allergies, no problem; we use soy milk in our smoothies and dairy free products. Newly remodeled and under new ownership and management, Fort Grill will soon be the talk of the town. They say good news travels fast and good news about food travels even faster. Under the direction of L'École Culinaire graduate and Executive Chef Aaron Grgurich, the menu is American fare. Best of all, the entire menu is created from scratch and when he says "fresh," Chef Aaron means it. The herbs in front of his portrait (left) came in bunches from a neighbor of the golf course. Rosemary, thyme, mint, parsley, oregano, and dill, just to name a few. Gravies and sauces are also made from scratch. "We promise--just come in once to taste our food and you'll be back for more!" said restaurant and banquet manager Susan Littrell. "We have customers coming back everyday for lunch just to introduce others to our smoked turkey Italian bread sandwiches. All of our smoked meats and fish are cooked on the premises by the chef," she added. From their juicy American burger to their prime rib dinner, their daily menu is what you would expect from a chef, but at prices you can afford. The grilled chicken Caesar salad is rich with texture and flavor. Like everything else at Fort Grill, the croutons are home-made. What better opportunity for a chef to show off his stuff than by creating freshly made pizzas and pastas? The chicken wraps come with home-made chip; would you expect anything less? The lunch crowd is also pleased with the prices and the food is served quickly because they understand you need to get back to work promptly. The Fort Grill Banquet Center can handle everything from a small business function to a wedding reception and can be decorated by the client to meet his or her needs. The banquets can be custom catered by the Fort Grill team or just rented for the space. They offer a versatile beer and wine list and daily happy hour specials from their fully stocked bar that can be served indoors or outside on the patio deck from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. In the future, Chef plans to introduce fresh country fare such as grilled trout, venison tenderloin and even marinated duck...Yum!

Mrs. C's Specialties

Cathy Summers, owner of Mrs. C’s Catering, believes in the adage ‘do what you love and success will follow.’ And success has recently found a friend in Cathy. You see, Cathy has always had a passion for cooking great food and whatever the catering opportunity may be: a wedding, birthday, a life tribute or a church event, she always ensures the guests enjoy a memorable meal. Today, her business is growing by leaps and bounds and Cathy is embarking on a new phase of expansion. “Basically, if a friend needed her wedding catered, they would turn to me. I would cook and elegantly customize the presentation to match the decor,” remembers Cathy, who has been catering events for twenty years. Most of Cathy’s clients come as referrals from other satisfied clients. “I do tastings for the couples. They come to my home and I cook them a dinner so they can get a taste of how I cook,” she says as she works on the menu plan for an upcoming wedding. “At first, clients may think, ‘oh, it’s just the same old catering stuff,’ but when they sit down and taste it, they are blown away because of the seasoning and the flavor. Clients tell me what they’re looking for and how they want it done and we make it for them because it’s their day. It’s their party.” Cathy tailors the menu according to her client’s budget. “Say you were getting married and your budget was tight. I would do something for say $8 $10 per person, but it would be very good home cooked food for everyone without breaking the bank,” explains Cathy. Mrs. C’s will also serve the food at the party so neither the clients or their guests have to. This helps with portion control, but Cathy makes sure the guests get to eat all they want. “There’s no limit. Just like if they were visiting my home, I want them to eat plenty and walk away feeling full and satisfied. And if there’s any leftover food at the end of the event, I give the couple the opportunity to take the remainder home with them if they want to.” While catering wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, proms, birthdays, anniversaries, charity events or even make-up parties in the greater St. Louis area and serving parties from 20 to 375 guests Mrs. C’s Catering has built an enviable reputation for taste, service and affordability. Cathy is known for her excellent beef brisket and her signature cream-cheese filled chocolate-covered strawberries and customized salads are fabulous. Her green beans with bacon, turkey, homemade chicken salad and barbecue chicken are all client favorites. Whether her client desires mashed potatoes and gravy, crunchy slaw with Napa cabbage and toasted ramen noodles or sweet potatoes she’ll prepare them in a home-cooked, southern style. “I like to have at least one month notice before the event,” Cathy says. “I’ve put together events as fast as two weeks, but a month gives me enough time to put everything together.” For Cathy to cater an event, the venue doesn’t necessarily need to have a kitchen. “I like to have a place to warm things up but I have my own hot boxes and equipment. That’s another cost savings for the customer; because I own my own equipment, the rental cost isn’t transferred,” Cathy states. A niche that differentiates Mrs. C’s from others is Cathy’s innate ability to provide stunning decorating for the event on a budget. “No matter what the budget everyone deserves to have a memorable special day. I have taken some weddings with a $500 budget, a hall and 22 tables and with the right decorations and an eye for the proper first impression, made it seem as if

they had a $10,000 budget,” she states. Most people overlook the décor items Cathy uses to make stunning event décor. It’s very economical, because she already has many of the décor items in stock, so clients don’t incur that cost. Though clients can book Cathy’s decorating services without the catering, they receive a discount if they book it together. “They don’t have to worry about their decorating or the food. We can put it in one package and it’s done,” she says. “I require that everyone be happy. When you leave a wedding that I’ve done, everyone is full, they’ve enjoyed their food, and they are ready to enjoy the rest of the party,” states Cathy. You can contact Cathy Summers of Mrs. C’s Catering at 636-462-2437 or 636-699-3330 and email her at itiscj@yahoo.com.

Business Profile

Kenneth E. Loy & Company, P.C. If longevity is a measure of success in business, then Certified Public Accounting firm of Kenneth E. Loy & Company, P.C. has undoubtedly achieved the coveted glory. With 31 years in private practice and three locations in Alton, Jerseyville and Greenfield, this prominent firm has positioned itself as the leader in public accounting in southern Illinois. When principal Kenneth Loy opened his firm in June 1, 1980, at the age of 24, he was the youngest accountant in the area to start a private practice. Loy was born and raised in Shipman and is a 1974 graduate of Southwestern High School, where a course in accounting sparked his interest in the field. He pursued his endeavor to attain a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1978 from Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville. After college, Loy worked for Illinois Department of Revenue as a sales tax auditor before partnering in a firm and later branching out on his own. Loy was inspired to go into private practice because of his belief in the core values of service, courtesy and professionalism. Three decades later they remain the bedrock of Loy’s flourishing practice. “I love working with my clients and having the opportunity to help them with their businesses and help them reach their goals,” Loy said. His adherence to true professionalism is reflected throughout the firm. “Sometimes it’s as simple as just returning a phone call,” he said. “People get angry in the personal service field when their calls aren’t returned quickly. We

make it a point to return calls as soon as possible, usually the same day or within 24 hours. We also have a quick turnaround time when processing returns.” With seven senior accountants, four CPAs, bookkeeping and payroll staff, and the addition of more hires during the work heavy tax season, Kenneth E. Loy Ken E. Loy, owner & Company is well adept at offering a multitude of services that include business and personal tax preparation, payroll, bookkeeping, monthly and quarterly accounting and auditing services.

“There has been a new tax bill every year for the past 15 years and the average person can’t keep up with the changes and is going to miss things.” Though Kenneth E. Loy & Company attracts individual return clients from across the US, local farming operations of southern Illinois also call Loy their accountant. It’s largely due to the fact that, unlike many CPAs, Loy is also a farmer and knows every aspect of the industry first hand. Living in and farming a 5000 acre family farm in Medora has enabled him to acquire a unique perspective that his farming clients can truly appreciate. Both a consummate professional and a devoted family man, Loy has been married to his wife Julie for 22 years. Working from home, Julie is a systems analyst for an overnight trucking company. The couple has twin sons Samuel and Jonathan, age 15. From left: Dianne, Office Manager; Karl, Senior Accountant; Ken, owner; Pat, Senior Accountant; Shawntaya, Receptionist. With several fire departments, school, water & sewer districts, municipal and government bodies; several hundred small to large businesses and over 2500 individuals as clients, this accounting firm has grown every year since its inception in 1980. Loy credits his firm’s personal and professional concern and commitment to every client for his growth. “Because our firm is relatively small, our clients benefit by getting personalized, quality service that is beyond comparison,” said Loy. “A lot of businesses have ups and downs, but we have grown every year. This is largely a referral based business, so that means a lot to us. We treat clients and their businesses like they are our own and we give everyone the same attention that we would want.” This unparalleled level of service is not available from the fast tax prep places. “You get someone different every year, and the person does not have to be a CPA to prepare your return,” Loy said. “But with us, not only are we licensed, but we can be with you year after year. Plus the fees are higher at those places than ours.” Loy also mentioned though many people turn to tax prep software for returns, they often get frustrated or have troubles with IRS and seek the firms help to resolve them. “The problem with the software is that it isn’t up to date. Changes in the tax code outpace the software and the average person may not have the accounting and tax knowledge to input the correct information,” he said. “They may save money by using software but they may also lose thousands in deductions that they did know they could take.

TRAVEL

Luscious

Costa Rica I

By: Diane Picht, owner of Four Season Travel and Cruises

t is a country like no other where orchids bloom, toucans sit in tree tops above the dense rain forest, the sun shines over a volcanic sand beach and howler monkeys jump from tree to tree. It is a new found Garden of Eden with natural resources protected by national parks and forest preserves. And now through Apple Vacations, Four Season Travel and Cruises offers non-stop charter flights into Liberia or San Jose International Airports. An Apple representative meets travelers at the airport for a hotel transfer or rental car for fly/drive self-guided tours. After a self-guided tour, they can spend days of relaxation at a beach resort in Guanacaste or in centrally located San Jose.

Arenal Volcano, one of the world's most active volcanos since 1969. This area is also home to the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge, rich in biological diversity with 850 bird species. The mighty Arenal Volcano area offers three or four night escorted tours ending at the Guanacaste Beach Hotel. There are also tropical adventures, fly and drive self-guided tours covering the Celeste River, Arenal Volcano area, Monteverde Flaming Beach and more.

The dry season is December-April and rainy season May-November. The average temperature is 72°F. The population is 4,331,000 and the country is located in the central time zone. Residents speak Spanish and English. Their currency is the colon (U.S. dollars and credit cards are accepted).

Nestled in the heart of the Central Valeym, San Jose is one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities in Central America. San Jose is a great base for exploring Costa Rica with its proximity to several volcanos, rain forests, cloud forest reserves and national parks, making it a perfect departure point for day trips. There is a five night escorted tour of the Caribbean coast featuring Braulio-Carillo National Park, Limon where Cristopher Columbus discovered Costa Rica, Cahuita National Park, Siquirres, Torugueros National Park and boat safari.

Located on the Pacific Ocean is Guanacaste, known for its beautiful beaches, warm climate, excellent surfing and snorkeling. The coast has bays, penisulas, and a number of protected areas. Optional day tours from Guanacaste include a shopping tour at Liberia City, a canopy tour, a visit to Rincon de la Vieja National Park, exploring Costa Rica's roots, Buena Vista Mega Combo, Arenal Volcano and Rain Forest walk, and Terorio River white water rafting. Tours are also available to Palo Verde National Park, floating at the Corobici River and hanging bridges in the rain forest. Many beautiful resorts are available in the Guanacaste Beach area and many are all-inclusive. The Arenal area is located in the northern plains, home of the

The Monteverda area is famous for its cloud forest. The three and four night escorted tours are designed to be combined with additional nights at a beach hotel in Guanacaste.

Discover Costa Rica with an adventure or beach resort vacation. And remember, using a professional travel agent is a convenient and often money-saving method of making travel arrangements. Agents provide expert advice, often through first-hand experience. A travel professional can help you narrow down your choices by focusing on the destinations and hotels or resorts that best meet your desires and preferences. It's like having a personal shopper! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by consulting with a travel professional. ď Ž

Business Profile

H&H Guns

Mark & Jane Hale’s gun store, called simply H&H Guns, is a gun shop not quite like any other. A customer describes this hometown gun shop perfectly: “H&H Guns is Sons of Guns meets American Pickers! It’s every gun enthusiast’s delight.” Two and half years ago, after their first location on the south service road in Warrenton was completely destroyed by fire. H&H Guns relocated to Old Town Warrenton at 115-C East Main.

H&H Guns has a large selection of new, used, and antique firearms. “We have a little bit of everything. From modern weapons to antique to military, you will find the rare and real thing here,” he says. Most gun stores are hesitant about putting antique or hard to find firearms on the shelf and tend to sell those on the internet. At H & H Guns, that classic old gun is right there on the shelf along with the newest ones. “We are a family run store. I prefer face to face interaction and that makes our store unique.” The personal touch along with his uncanny ability to get his hands on the latest and greatest firearms on the market puts H&H head and shoulders above the rest. H & H Guns don’t just sell guns. They have a large selection of ammunition,

both common calibers and hard to find; a fantastic selection of knives, mounts, rings, scopes, pepper spray, stun guns, and a wide variety of accessories to trick out your AR. There are just too many items to name and their inventory changes all the time with new and used items coming in daily. Unheard of in the industry, H&H Guns warranties both new and used firearms. “Our policy puts the customer first, we call it the ‘Dave Sinclair - If it’s not right, we’ll make it right!’ states Mark. H&H Guns buys and trades for a variety of items– Like Pawn Stars, you never know what will come through their door. Read a few five star reviews on their Yahoo Local page and it will tell you why customers call H&H Guns, ‘The Best Gun Shop In the Land’: “You have found the best kept secret in gun shops”, “The man that runs it is one in a million and is backed up by his family at the counter. If you have been treated badly at other shops or just want to see how it should be. Go check out H&H Guns!” “Very cool store. This is the toy store for big boys and girls. My girlfriend liked it as much as I did.”

“I get a kick out of taking friends there who ask about a gun they have just seen in a gun magazine and Mark pulls one out ( you mean one of these) their jaws drop open. Great selection, Great service and Great people on both sides of the counter make you feel welcome every time you walk in. Don't miss this place!” “My wife bought her first handgun there after talking with Jane about it. One of a kind place!” “Mark is very knowledgeable and goes out of his way to help anybody, Mark and his family are great people, if I had to drive 200 miles to buy a gun from him I would with no question asked. I give him a 10 on a scale of 1 to 5. I can save you the trouble of looking, there is no place better in the world.” Great People, Like 'Cheers' without the beer!” “Best gun shop ever!” Mark and Jane are blessed with two very industrious sons, Blake, age 18, and Josh, age 14. The store is located at 115-C East Main in Warrenton and can be reached at 636- 456- 6118. 

LARGE

By: Barbara Cashion, owner, Here's 2 Eyes Remember when the large sunglasses first came back out on the market? Some of the comments made were "oh my gosh, they're huge!" or "they're so cute!" As we have became more educated on the benefits of the large sunglasses, they have gained in popularity and design. But it doesn't stop there. At the same time, a lot of comments were "I remember when my sunglasses looked like these," or "I wish I could get frames that were bigger because I felt like I could see better." Well, the time has come. Many of you have heard me say before that eyeglasses are no longer just necessities, they are also regulated by fashion. As fashion seems to repeat, so does eyeglass fashion. The larger style frame has begun to work its way back as is evident by such eyeglass wearers as Justin Bieber, Randy Jackson, and Anne Hathaway. One of the benefits of a larger frame means more area for embellishments, primarily on the temples. There can be anything from imprints to bling, color and so on. Remember, the first thing most people see when they look at you is your glasses. For those of you who prefer a smaller style, don't despair; I'm sure your eye care professional will find a way to accommodate you. But for those of you who are fashion conscious or want more lens with which to see, these may be just what you wanted. The overall shape--rectangles to a little more square, oval, etc., of the lenses still seems to be the same but a little larger. As an example, a typical Zyl (plastic) frame was approximately 3/4 of an inch (22 mm). The newer styles are over an inch and a quarter (33 mm), a difference of 1/2 inch (7 mm). The difference in the depth of a lens can be a positive or a negative thing. It's a positive thing for those of us who wear a multi-focal lens (bifocal, trifocal or progressive) as this will allow more area for magnification. The negative side is that if you have a prescription that is on the strong side, more lens surface translates into more weight. But let's say you have a "heavy" prescription and want to wear the newer styled frames, there are things your eye care professional can do to make your glasses more comfortable to wear. Talk with your eye care professional about the lens choices available for your needs before you select your frame. By doing this you have a rough idea what they will feel like once your lenses are inserted. In my opinion, with the new styles we are all winners! Larger frames mean more visual ability for some, more protection for the eye, and those of us who are very into fashion also get to express ourselves. ď Ž

Norman N. Bein MD FACS RVT is a board certified surgeon in St. Louis and Washington, MO, in conjunction with the American Venous Forum. The American Venous Forum (AVF) is an international consortium of venous and lymphatic specialists dedicated to improving patient care. This includes increasing public awareness for acute and chronic venous diseases through education, identification and empowerment. Dr. Bein performs complimentary vein screenings for those who are at risk for blood clots and venous disease in their deep or superficial veins and vein disease. If you suffer from painful, achy and heavy legs, have painful varicose veins, or skin changes in your ankles we can help you. In most cases, vein procedures are considered medically necessary and are covered by your insurance. We can help you with a cure, not just a treatment for venous ulcers, wounds that are thought to occur due to improper functioning of venous valves, usually of the legs. They are the major cause of chronic wounds, occurring in 70% to 90% of chronic wound cases. Venous ulcers develop mostly along the medial distal leg and can be very painful. Another common medical problem is venous stasis, a condition of slow blood flow in the veins, usually of the legs. A patient with venous stasis might be more vulnerable to the formation deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which is blood clot, especially in the deep veins of the legs. It is important to educate people about these problems and how they can be cured. We offer complimentary screening tests. You can come in, get your screening done, and discuss your options from a medical standpoint, because in most cases the problems are much more than cosmetic. Ultra sounds show the medical problems that can lead to complications in everyday activity, including fatigue and many other symptoms.

Profiles in Medicine

Prof. Sayeed Siddiky Professor Sayeed Ahmed Siddiky is a renowned plastic surgeon and a pioneer of cosmetic surgery in Bangladesh. In November 2002, he founded Cosmetic Surgery Centre Ltd, a clinic for cosmetic surgery--the first of its kind in the country. The idea behind establishing this private clinic was to promote and familiarize the concept of cosmetic surgery in Bangladesh, so that patients seeking aesthetic surgery would not have to travel abroad. Over the years, the Centre has gained a reputation for providing safe, international-standard service. It also attracts a large number of foreign clients who regularly come here to avail various types of cosmetic procedures. Professor Siddiky passed his MBBS from the Dhaka Medical College and his FCPS from the Bangladesh College of Physicians & Surgeons. In 1995, he earned his FRCS degree from the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow, U.K.

84 I IMPULSE I Summer 2011

Following his FRCS, he began working at Victoria Infirmary and Canniesburn Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, one of the biggest referral centers for plastic surgery in the whole of U.K. He also participated in various training programs and FLAP courses in that hospital. Professor Siddiky also worked with different plastic surgeons at Newcastle General Hospital in England. In 1993 and 1996, he was awarded Fellowship from the International College of Surgeons (FICS) and the prestigious American College of Surgeons (FACS), respectively. Upon his return to Bangladesh he organized and ran a plastic surgery department in a private medical college in Dhaka. He went on to perform thousands of operations, some for the first time in Bangladesh. These include the introduction of breast implant surgery in 2001 and latest lipoinjection technique for facial rejuvenation in 2010. In addition, he has had more than twenty five publications in various journals, both national and international. Cloud 9 Mattress Co. A restful night's sleep is key to your overall feeling of good health, making the choice of mattress extremely important. Providing comfort and eliminating pain is the primary goal of the team at Cloud 9 Mattress Company. Their trained sales staff is dedicated to fitting each individual with a proper sleep surface and offering a good variety of each type of sleep surface available.

Sleep Stages There are four stages of sleep. Stage three and four are the deepest stages of sleep. Restorative sleep energy is created by achieving the deeper stages of sleep. These are essential in sleeping because our energy becomes restored, our immune system is strengthened and our body is prompted to release vital growth hormones.

Cloud 9 specializes in corrective sleep at inexpensive pricing. With the price of queen pillow tops prices starting at just $288 per set, this specialized mattress store is making sure getting a great night's sleep is affordable on any budget. Dan and his partner Lisa Phillips have over 27 years of combined experience in the home furnishing and bedding industry. Dan attributes their aggressive pricing to their lack of large overhead. But aggressive pricing does not mean your shopping experience will not be pleasant. In fact, the opposite is true. There are many factors to consider when purchasing a mattress. First you must choose what type of mattress works best for you. Pocketed Coil Springs Cloud 9 Mattress Co. specializes in pocketed coil mattresses. According to Dan, with the exception latex rubber and memory foam mattresses, pocketed coil mattresses can give you the highest tech sleep. “Pocketed coil springs are the secret to undisturbed sleep,” he says. Unlike the wire-tied springs in ordinary mattresses, pocketed coil springs are not joined at the top or the bottom. Instead, high carbon steel springs are precompressed and placed in durable, non-allergenic fabric encasements. This allows the Pocketed Coil springs to adjust individually to the weight and contour of your body. Since adjacent springs aren't tied together, there's no chain reaction of move-

ment when you turn or move during the night. Standard Coil Cloud 9 offers a wide variety of mattresses to fit their customers’ needs, including standard coil. In this type of mattress the coils, also known as the core or the innerspring unit, provide the main support for the body. Proper support is essential not only for a good night's sleep, but for maintaining a healthy spine. Memory Foam Memory foam was developed in 1966 to improve the safety of aircraft cushions. It was then subsequently used in medical settings. It was commonly utilized in cases where the patient was required to lie immobile in their bed on a firm mattress for an unhealthy period of time which caused the pressure over some of their bony regions to decrease or stopped the blood flow to the region causing pressure sores or gangrene. Memory foam mattresses remarkably decreased such events. Latex Latex mattresses are great for people who are interested in a "green" mattress option. This mattress is made of all natural ingredients but still has a buoyant and elastic characteristic, is hypo-allergenic, antibacterial and anti-dust mite. Some people who just haven’t found a comfortable bed due to specific pain issues and choose this uniquely comfortable sleep surface and benefit greatly. Cloud 9 Mattress Co. is located at 1215 Wentzville Pkwy in Wentzville and at 3899 Veterans Memorial Pkwy in St. Peters. They can be contacted at 636-33CLOUD or 636-332-5683 and on the web at www. cloud9mattresscompany.com. 
