iNTERIORS
OW... 7 YEARS! It all started with the word iN, the phrase ‘The Golden Triangle’ and an area whose idea of a Sunday stroll is a circuit in their Masseratti. But it is not just the fast paced, go-getter attitude and glamorous lifestyle that marks out our area, but the many independent businesses, who across the years, I have watched as their mini empires have grown within our glossy covers. Essex is unique and for our 7th Anniversary issue we celebrate all that makes it so, from you our reader, to you our advertiser and to everything else that is Essex! Thank you for all our birthday messages via twitter, Facebook and email. I have included all that I could on pages 6 to 9, along with a nostalgic scrap book of our favourite moments from the last seven years. And for the rest... Our fashion editor, Rose Keen, gives us the low down of everything that’s iN this spring! Turn to page 35 ...where plastic surgeon Doctor Carver talks ‘tummy tucks’ in his debut column. And iN Magazine interviews Essex favourite Stacey Solomon, page 33. If you, like me, are having a Spring clean and can’t actually see how you can fit any more clothes in that ‘vintage’ section of your wardrobe then turn to page 47 where owner Elaine from BWI Self Storage Solutions gives us just that... a solution. Finally, why is Sante Fe owner Gary Irwin called G Man? Answers on a postcard please. I would also like to wish you all a lovely Easter break, mine’s a Cadbury’s if anyone’s asking!

ONE OF ESSEX’S MOST LOVED BEAUTY SALONS
BeautyStop Not only has
Beauty Stop got fifteen years of trade to draw upon, owner Toni Hanshaw knows exactly what her clients want in terms of service and treatments.
Beauty Stop’s reputation is one of the highest measure, built upon the professionalism of their beauticians, the outstanding customer service the salon provides and by providing ‘high end’ beauty treatments that you would only expect to find in the West End. Beauty Stop delivers the latest in-vogue treatments to the Essex and London area, at prices to suit every size purse. iN Magazine caught up with Toni for a brief chat about the treatments that were in most demand. And in keeping with our anniversary theme the question was...
‘What are Beauty Stop’s 7 most popular treatments?’ 1. St Tropez Spray Tans 2. 3D Eyelashes 3. Bio Sculpture Gel Nails 4. Omnilux Facials 5. Laser Hair Removal 6. CACI Non Surgical Facelifts 7. bareMinerals Makeovers

iN Magazine’s Rose Keen catches up with Essex Queen of the Jungle, X Factor star and face of Iceland, Stacy Solomon to talk new albums, new babies and great smiles. iN: Last time iN caught up with you Stacy was in 2009, in the middle of your X Factor rise to fame. Can you fill us in a little on what’s been happening between then and now? SS: Wow! I’ve been so lucky and have had some fantastic opportunities. I went into the jungle, made my own perfume, shared two new shows with Chris Moyles and Keith Lemmon and have been the face of Iceland. iN: What have been some of the high lights? SS: It’s all one big highlight, how could I possibly choose one thing. iN: And we hear congratulations are in order with baby number two on the way. How have you found the pregnancy? SS: Yay! I have really found it different to Zach’s. I craved savoury pickled things last time and now I crave sweets and I have a lot more energy than last time but I’m sure that’ll change. I can’t wait for baby number two and neither can Zachary and Aaron!
iN: What else have you got planned for the coming year? SS: There’s load’s of stuff coming up for this year, thank God. I hope to do lots more for Iceland, hopefully there are more show’s in the pipeline, working on my album and most of all having a beautiful little baby.
iN: We hear your dentist is somewhere in Woodford Green area? SS: My dentist is Dr Abbas at Signature Smile Woodford Green. iN: Would you recommend him to your family and friends? And most importantly would you take your children to see him to look after their teeth? SS: I already take Zachary to see Dr Abbas and I will be taking my next child to see him as well, as I know he will look after their teeth for me. iN: Are there any smiles you particularly admire? SS: I have always loved Julia Roberts smile. iN: What does the perfect smile mean to you? SS: I think smiles are the best. If someone smiles I automatically smile back at them. iN: You were known as ‘Just an ordinary girl from Essex with an amazing talent’ - how have you found your associations with the county have affected you in the public’s eyes? SS: I don’t think it matters where you’re from! I wouldn’t change it for the world and I’m very proud of being from Essex. iN: We here you have got a new album out this year, can you tell us about that? SS: It comes out in September hopefully, fingers crossed it all goes well. It’s really acoustic, live lounge-y and I’ve been working really, really hard on it. I haven’t rushed it; I’ve taken my time and been able to write on my own. So I’m just so excited for it to come out! iN: And you have an exciting TV project underway as well? SS: I’m so happy that Sky Living HD's dating show The Love Machine is finally out. It was so much fun to film. I love the couples, the concept of the game, I loved being able to write whatever I thought, so it’s so nice to be able to watch it all. That’s my Sunday night’s gone for 10 weeks.

Nip&Tuck More and more people are opting to have cosmetic surgery. But, it is not a decision which should be undertaken lightly and who better to answer all your questions than locally renowned cosmetic surgeon, Mr Nigel Carver? Only a few surgeons could get away with a name like ‘Carver’, but having helped thousands of men and women achieve the shape they want Nigel Carver is undoubtedly famed both by name and profession! Here, Nigel Carver brings you his first column on how he can help us achieve a near perfect body.
THE TUMMY TUCK OPERATION OR ‘ABDOMINOPLASTY’
BEFORE
AFTER
Generally, women will come to see me as they dislike their stretched abdominal skin after childbirth, especially if it hangs over a caesarean scar. Pregnancy also pushes the tummy muscles apart and fat can build up around their midriff. An Abdominoplasty will make the abdomen as flat as possible by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the abdominal muscles. Although the scar is long it is hidden neatly in the bikini line. Liposuction is performed to reshape the waist, hips and other areas if needed. There are risk factors such as smoking or obesity which need to be addressed before surgery can go ahead. If you are considering surgery, you will need to factor in: A general anaesthetic and a 2 night hospital stay, plus three weeks initial recovery time. You definitely will need help with your family and to take leave from work. The `Tummy Tuck` works well with impressive results, and can lead to feelings of a much more confident outlook and lifestyle.

BOOSTING YOUR BUST
Q: Having had two children and not wanting to go down the route of having implants, the thought of summer with its swimsuits and low cut tops fills me with dread. Is there anything that can help with improving the appearance of my cleavage?
DR SHAZIA SIDDIQI: We all know that gravity, age and child rearing are the natural enemies of breast pertness. For women, a drooping of the bust can be a huge blow to personal self confidence. Which is why breast augmentation is consistently the most popular plastic surgical procedure in the country. However, for those looking for something less drastic than going under the knife, there are now less invasive alternative treatments available for busts that are heading south. New to PURE Medi-Spa Thermolift or ‘the Boob Boost’ as it has been dubbed, is one of the most sought after treatments in celebrity circles because of its ability to tighten and tone the breast area. Where as many topical creams only tighten the surface of the skin the Thermolift utilizes radiofrequency and infrared to tighten and tone the skin before pushing through a combination of serums which stimulate collagen production. With absolutely no needles or cutting involved, you can go back to normal activities straight after a Thermolift treatment. And with each session taking only one hour, it can easily be fitted into a lunch break or whilst the kids are at school. Visible results can be seen after just one session, however for lasting results a course of eight is normally recommended. Regular treatments will see breasts become firmer and lifted, which will boost confidence, improving body shape and have your cleavage bikini ready by the time the summer arrives. With... Elaine Gibbons, MD of BWI Self Storage April is the month for spring cleaning, decluttering or moving. Whether it’s at work or at home, clutter in the form of things we need but not often use are common problems. So I was intrigued to learn about the BWI Self Storage story. iN: Your units cost as little as £4 per week, that’s excellent value. EG: Yes it is, our unit sizes range from lockers to shipping container size. Students may need storage over the summer, families use storage when moving home, renovating or downsizing. We attract many businesses where they have outgrown their premises but are not in a position to commit to a long term leases. We are seen as a flexible alternative; we offer as long or short a period as necessary. Ebay traders also use our units. iN:
I’ve met your employees, Martin and Sian and your husband Bijal, they come across as professional and personable. EG: Once people come to BWI and meet us they leave with the confidence that they dealing with people who care and treat them as individuals.
iN:
It’s quite unusual for a woman to be in the storage industry, especially a Managing Director...where did your vision start? EG: Once I had children it was difficult to return to my international business role, I looked for something that allowed me to control the location and the hours I worked. Bijal had just finished a consultancy project with Safestore (UK’s largest self storage company) and whilst on maternity leave I worked doing some adhoc consultancy in the industry, so we believed we had a strong knowledge base between us. It took several years to find the right site and to convince the banks to lend money to a startup business. Although the industry is dominated by men, most of the decision makers, when it comes to selecting a self-storage facility for personal use, are women and I felt I had a good idea of what they would require from a self-storage facility and what sort of customer experience they would expect. iN:
So you are a mother and an entrepreneur with vision. How do you juggle your home life with work? EG: We open 7 days a week, so having staff we can trust and rely on is of prime importance. That allows me to manage the finances and marketing. On a more personal note – a whiteboard diary in the kitchen at home and having all uniforms and schoolbags ready the night before is the only way not to go crazy!

ADVERTORIAL
arketing themselves as “the first and only company in the UK that can offer short-term lending to companies of all shapes and sizes, plus offering services to individuals no matter what the circumstances may be”, Sterling Pawn is not the traditional bank or finance house. With over 60 years of experience within the industry, and soon to become full members of the National Pawn Association (NPA), SP know the importance of being ahead of the game and offering something different in the everexpanding world of urgent funds and financial security. With all the post-recession easy credit and extortionate interest rates – often leading to default, bankruptcy, companies facing going into receivership or, at worst, liquidation – many companies took full advantage: often you’ll hear of a £400 loan turning into a £4,000 debt in a matter of months. This is not what Sterling Pawn does. They fully understand that when owning a business cash flow may dry up very quickly due to matters that are out of your control, and they have been structured to offer either short-term financing or outright purchases to companies or individuals at “rates below anywhere else”. Keeping a simple ethic of being a no-hassle, strictly private and confidential company, Sterling Pawn operate from their offices in Loughton where you can visit them or they can come to you – it’s a professional service with a personal touch. We like personal. So iN Magazine arranged an appointment with Sterling director, Robert Waterman...
STERLING PAWN change... we are the future of the pawn industry, so we will consider just about anything. With companies that “cash your gold”, for example, you have to keep in mind that the item of gold you had for 20 years is now worth up to 100-1000 times more even as scrap; this has made the high street a very easy place to get quick funds. Sometimes done in the right way, sometimes not, so the impact on the landscape and how people’s attitudes are towards these companies is massive.
iN: Do you think there are too many pawnbrokers now, or does it help having more commercial publicity of the industry? RW: I feel that the market is flooded with so-called ‘pawnbrokers’, who are looking for the quick buck and are just taking advantage of a weak market. They are not members of the NPA. Having more legal pawnbrokers can only be a good thing and will help grow the industry into an even more respected one.
iN: What makes Sterling different? RW: For example, we have had the opportunity to buy a client’s boat, which was moored in Dubai, so we went with the client and valued it.
iN: What has been the most interesting (or bizarre) piece of jewellery or personal possession somebody has wanted to pawn? RW: We had someone who was a girlfriend to a pop star, who she had just split up with... she wanted to get rid of everything that he had purchased for her, not because she needed the funds but it was her way of closure; she had all manner of items such as fur coats to a Bentley car. It was a bizarre situation but one that was dealt with in a purely confidential way. She walked away very happy and achieved her goal.
iN: How long has Sterling Pawn been operating?
iN: Finally, have you ever had to pawn anything?
RW: Sterling Pawn has been trading since obtaining our consumer credit licence in December 2011, but we have been trading in all manner of goods for over 20 years; this is an extension of our existing business.
RW: I did once purchase a Megadrive console from Cash Converters in Gants Hill when I was 14. I saw it for a few weeks and begged my parents for it; I ended up using it for two weeks, put it in the cupboard and sold it back to the shop six months later for a small profit!!
iN: How did the idea for Sterling come about? RW: About June of last year I had been watching Pawn Stars on the Discovery Channel; the programme is based around a Las Vegas family who buy and sell anything from gold coins to hotels, and it’s one of the most watched TV programmes in the world. I originally did some investigating in the Chigwell area (where I have lived all of my life) and found that if people in our area wanted a top quality service which was confidential and involved high value goods they would have to go to either the City or the West End – even then confidentiality was not assured and the company wouldn’t visit clients. It soon became very clear that this is what the area was missing.
iN: What have you noticed about the change in the landscape of the jewellery trade over the past five years, especially with all the "cash for gold" adverts on telly? RW: You have to remember the traditional pawnbroker is something you will associate with jewellery, which is something we are trying to

TELLING PORKY PIES
- Lessons in Lying ccording to academics at the University of Essex we have become less honest in the last decade. Professor Paul Whiteley, director of the Essex Centre for the Study of Integrity said,
‘ Gradually people are tending to become more dishonest, they are more willing to tell lies, more willing to tolerate adultery.’ He and his team questioned 2000 adults, asking to what extent a series of 10 activities were justified. These included avoiding paying for public transport, keeping money found in the street, throwing litter and lying. The results paint a pretty shocking portrait. It appears that in Britain today we are more likely to lie on application forms, buy stolen goods, have an affair or drive whilst over the limit. The survey’s findings showed that women have slightly more integrity than men, but where you live or what job you do had no significant effect on honesty levels. Perhaps the most worrying aspect of Professor Whiteley’s findings is that the survey shows young people are more likely to condone bad behaviour than older people, suggesting that this ‘integrity problem’ is likely to get worse over time. Asked why our young are becoming more dishonest the Professor said,
‘ We think it is because their role models are not very good – footballers who cheat on their wives, journalists who hack people’ s phones.’ He believes there might be a ‘life cycle’ effect in 50 in MAGAZINE
which people become more honest as they age. However, he also points out that other research suggests people learn honesty or dishonesty in their formative years and this will not change very much as they get older.
more reward than hiding the truth. Simple enough. Except, is it unfair, or unreasonable to expect our children to be more truthful than the adults they live with, or the celebrities, sports heroes and leaders they look to for example?
Oh dear. When persuading our toddler to tell Granny the frumpy, itchy, hand-knit she sent for Christmas is ‘lovely and I wear it all the time,’ could it be that we are starting our darling on a slippery slope to moral roguery?
On the other hand, lies, greed and hypocrisy have been around since the ancient man first set up home in a cave. To visualise a virtuous state where everyone is kind and considerate, honest and altruistic is beyond the realms of reality. Perhaps life has always been as it is now, but in the 24/7 news-streamed world that we live in, everything is magnified.
Bending the truth, hiding it, blurring it, being economical with it, little white lies and whoppers - you don’t have to be a Fleet Street Editor or Politician to be guilty of a fib of some degree. Who hasn’t slipped a couple of quid to the kids so that they fail to mention to Dad the detour to Lakeside? And let’s be honest, who hasn’t called school to say ‘Johnnie’s ill, he won’t be in’ – from Stanstead Airport? Surely these modern-day dilemmas are a far cry from fiddling expenses and dishonest Bankers? Or are we setting our children a dangerous example? The average six-year-old has a greater talent for fiction than any unscrupulous newspaper hack. Their innocent minds bubble with magic and imagination. For this age group when the stories are tall, they are pretty easy to spot. When Mum or Dad says ‘I don’t think it was quite like that,’ the truth usually finds its way to the surface. But as they hit their tempestuous teens our children’s deceit becomes more subtle. Parts of their lives become guarded with secrecy and they begin to acquire many of the hang-ups and strange ideas of the adult world. So the aim then must be to establish honesty in the early years and ensure that openness gets
Professor Whiteley says the strength of our integrity matters because there is a link between it and our sense of civic duty. He says,
‘ If social capital is low and people are suspicious and don’ t work together, communities have worse health, worse educational performance; they are less happy and less economically developed. It really does have a profound effect.’ A lie is a sin – we all know that. But surely some lies are less treacherous than others. There must be times when it’s worth sacrificing a little honesty for some short term relief, for the sake of family harmony for example. A little white lie to avoid a scene can save time, heartache and headache. It’s a tricky one. ‘I cannot tell a lie,’ George Washington said to his Father. Our politicians and powerful would like us to believe this a value to which they aspire. Mmmm......perhaps, or maybe, liar, liar, pants on fire! Words by Sue Lovett

s you know this month see’s our wonderful Magazine turn 7 years old and while iN Magazine shows no sign of the ‘seven-year itch’, the affiliation has got me thinking about this phrase and what it means. How is it that while some may compare their co-habiting to a ‘Lucky 7’, others are battling with the ‘7 Deadly Sins’? What’s the answer? And how do you avoid the 7-year itch, or any relationship breaking irritation for that matter?
Looking back, I’ve been quite an itchy person in general. I have endured the 4 years, 2 years and even 6 months itch. In fact you could say that when it comes to commitment, I have a slight allergy. Never quite reaching the 7 year mark but instead moving on at the first tingle or at times confused the itch with a mild prickle and departed from a perfectly good relationship, too early. So as you can tell, qualified I am not on this subject so it’s a good job I know how to use Google. Theories suggest on sites such as ‘survivingmarriage.com’, (like it’s a trek through the Sahara Desert), that the seven year itch can be blamed on couples spending more energy on raising their children, than they do on their relationships. They also believe that due to women having more opportunities these days, they are the ones that itch long before men do. Thus making men cling to the security of a marriage and becoming needy. It’s quite unnerving for both sexes when you think about it. One minute you’re both feeling the love and then, as you yawn your way to the 7 year check point, what you thought you’d always wanted, now seems more boring than queuing! So what’s the answer? Well, this I don’t know and if I did then Jeremy Kyle would be out of a job quicker than you can say ‘lie detector test’. However, what I do know and believe, (along with most marriage counsellors), is that in the end, the break up of a relationship has nothing to do with itches, endorphins or primitive urges. Instead, it has everything to do with two people, and their willingness to make their marriage worthwhile. With that in mind I have devised a catchy three word phrase that I feel, along with your willingness, may help. ROMANCE, RELIABILITY, RESPECT The three R’s that should always be met ROMANCE, RELIABILITY, RESPECT If not, then move onto the next!

The Spotlight
G-FORCE DESIGN FOR LIFE ary Irwin is definitely his own man. It was 20 years ago that he made his mark on the high street of Wanstead – where he opened the Santa Fe Menswear shop – but, as with all great twists of fate, there’s much more to how it all came about. DJing at house parties, working in a designer boutique and meeting Bruce Willis were to shape where Gary is now. IN Magazine’s roving reporter, Danny Cheesewright, caught up with the self-styled entrepreneur to talk about life so far... Back in the glorious mid-80s a teenage Gary was studying business at London’s College for the Distributive Trades, which is where the Capital Radio building now stands, as well as working at the prestigious Woodhouse boutique.
“At college I used to sneak out at lunch breaks and visit all the record shops in the area... I’d spend all my savings on records,” reminisces Gary. “I also started DJing when I was at college, but the main thing for me was travelling around to different club nights and seeing different DJs, such as Norman Jay and Robbie Vincent. Eventually we started to follow the likes of Pete Tong and Gilles Peterson, and they would send me lots of music. Another of my influences with the DJing was a guy called Derek B, who is sadly no longer with us. He was also a fellow Woodhouse worker. We would play house parties together.” After college Gary went on to Brighton University. The energy from one aspect gave even more energy to the other. “When I went to Brighton I wasn’t sure whether to carry on the DJing,” mentions Gary, “yet I somehow managed to make everything fit: Uni Monday to Friday, then I’d leave on a Friday afternoon, play at the Prince of Wales in Buckhurst Hill, work at Woodhouse on the Saturday then play at Flappers in Hackney on the Saturday night. Back in the day I was earning a fortune.” But it was to be the work at Woodhouse (originally work experience in the early 80s) that would become the key to Gary’s future years:
“I was in my element. I remember at the time getting myself an Armani jumper which I never seemed to take off. It was after this, and seeing all the amazing clothes in the shop, that had me hooked on designer clothes.”
And it wasn’t only the clothes that Gary experienced; there were many famous faces to grace Woodhouse, including its owner Philip Start. “When I moved to the Sloane Street branch, this is where I met so many people,” remembers Gary.
“Tina Turner would come in, Madonna, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, Ringo Starr... I remember serving Bruce Willis on several occasions. But the most memorable person to visit the store was jean Paul Gaultier, plus we were the first place in London to sell his unique pieces. I remember when Boy George wore a Gaultier shirt in the first Culture Club video we were inundated with people coming in wanting the same designed shirt. It was a great time to work there; I continued to work at Woodhouse for seven years.” It was this experience which allowed Gary to open his own designer outlet Santa Fe back in 1992, which not only stocks must-have labels but also specialises in designer suits and provides a unique bespoke shirt service with a very decent range of top quality Italian fabrics. Now, the love of designer wear is equalled by the love of music, with Gary being involved with the DJ work again. Going under the moniker of ‘G Man’, Mr Irwin revels in the music from the golden days of soul and disco.
“When I’m out I love playing disco, soul and funk – which is timeless. You have the crowd who remember the tracks first time round and still love them, plus you have the younger generation dancing away to records they’ve never heard.” Gary may now be the responsible father of three and be old enough to remember the Paradise Garage in New York City, but his glory days are still hip and happening. He is back to doing what he does best. In fact, he never left it.
In honour of iN Magazine's 7th birthday, here are the G Man’s top 7 all-time crowd-pleasing tracks:
Somebody Else’s Guy – Jocelyn Brown Native New Yorker – Odyssey Love Hangover – Diana Ross (Fallin’ Like) Dominoes – Donald Byrd ’Cross The Tracks – Maceo & The Macks I Believe In Miracles – The Jackson Sisters Black Whip – Ivan “Boogaloo Joe” Jones Gary currently plays on www.housefm.net every Wednesday from midday. But if you feel the urge to interact with him sooner, you can find him six days a week in Santa Fe, 119 High Street Wanstead, T. 020 8518 8922 in MAGAZINE 57

eCOnetic It may be economical, but do you have to be eco-mental to buy it?
veryone’s trying to save money these days, buying multiple multi-packs, holding out for the sales, stocking-up on supermarket deals, not feeding the children and many other more (or less) drastic measures, and motorists are feeling the pinch more than most. Which would explain why car manufacturers are currently grappling with the concept of economy, and how to sex it up. ECOnetic is Ford’s play on a now-familiar concept and it was delivered to us in the form of the Fiesta Titanium. The Fiesta is a familiar car on our roads these days, so you won’t need me to tell you that it still looks modern and fresh. Its large swept-back headlights, strong body line and angular rear lights are all styling cues from the rest of the range, while the ECOnetic badge (complete with blue lettering and a leaf), point out that this is the most economical variant. Trouble is, £16,340 outlay for your Fiesta ECOnetic is, well… far from ECOnetic. The test car’s top-spec Titanium trim level doesn’t help matters, but does give you lots of toys to play with. Standard fit includes: alloy wheels, automatic headlights and wipers, chrome exterior trim, DAB radio, knee and side airbags, cruise control and a Quickclear windscreen. The modern theme of the exterior continues inside. The dash has the substantial feel of a bigger car, but retains the coolness that 58 in MAGAZINE
would be expected in a junior model. Plastics may not feel quite up to VW standards, but they’re shaped in funky ways that make this seem a fair trade off, and are helped by this model’s cocktail-bar ambient lighting, which unobtrusively shines down from the passenger-side of the dash. All the controls fall easily to hand and seem perfectly intuitive, even the obligatory mating-of-iPhone-to-carstereo was performed without problems. Space, up front at least, is good with plenty of leg and elbow room, and with reach-adjustable steering and a fully adjustable seat, driving should be comfy too. Back-seat legroom for adults shifts between acceptable to not at all acceptable (depending on who’s sitting up front), but should be fine for kids, and the boot’s bigger than the class average. Out on the road Ford’s DNA is clear to feel. Like the Fiestas before it, this one is a nimble handler if you want it to be. Turn-in is reassuring, with the steering weighting up noticeably above 50mph, and the chassis feels composed and relaxed, yet at the same time, taut. It rides well too, feeling compliant on all but the worst city centre bumps, and steady on the motorway. We even like the light mechanical-feeling gearshift. Only uncommunicative steering, which can be a trifle light at low speeds, spoils the show. Giving this Fiesta its eco-credentials is the 1.6 four-cylinder turbo diesel engine. It delivers 0-60mph in 12.9 seconds and a top speed of 111mph. Ford say it can return up to 64mpg combined all though we couldn’t better 50mpg in normal driving. The next disappointment is that this is in no way a refined unit, start-up is gruff and town driving can be too. Blame can be attributed to the
‘The Fiesta is a familiar car on our roads these days, so you won’t need me to tell you that it still looks modern and fresh.’
NEW GT SEPARATES THE CARS FROM THE SUPERCARS. Thanks to the Geneva motor show, its been an interesting time for motoring enthusiasts. Not only have we basked in a wave of new metal that only a motor show can bring but, in amongst the hoi polloi, there’s an all new Ferrari. It’s called the f12 berlinetta (capital letters must have upset Ferrari...), and unlike the recently launched four-wheel drive and hatchback-ed FF, the berlinetta is a traditional Ferrari GT.
eco-focused high gearing, which seems to dictate being in a lower gear than you would normally expect, meaning you’re caught between choosing a low gear, with some form of usable acceleration and a high one, to maintain relaxed conversation. Cruising above 80mph (not that we’d do such a thing officer) is particularly mind numbing, and makes the inclusions of cruise (notsure-why-you’d-want-to) control, seem strange. This may read like an attack on what is one of the best cars in its class, but at this price (£16,340 remember) and spec, it is. That’s because the base Fiesta comes complete with a zippy 1.25-litre petrol engine, is in fact cheaper to run on a mile-on-mile basis and at £9,495, is significantly cheaper to buy in the first place. Given the choice, we’d forgo the toys of Titanium spec and go for a petrol Fiesta Edge, every time. As Cameron’s penny pinching slogan goes, “We are all in it together”. We’re just not sure “it” should be an Econetic Fiesta.
Traditional, because it offers a large V12 upfront, which drives the rear wheels, and is clothed in a body styled by Pininfarina. Less traditional is the power produced by that V12. The 6.3-litre engine produces 730bhp and 509lb ft of torque, meaning it can reach 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds, 0-124mph in 8.5 seconds and will max-out at “over 211mph.” To give a little more perspective, the f12 laps Ferrari's test track two seconds quicker than an Enzo, Ferrari’s last full-blown supercar. Helping it serve up these figures is a bodyshell and chassis that’s composed of 12 different types of alloy, which means the f12 is 20 per cent stiffer, and 70kg lighter, than the 599 it replaces. With aero features like the “aero bridge”, which channels air from side bonnet air intakes, through the wheel arches and out through vents in the doors, the f12 generates 76 per cent more downforce than the 599. While a host of electronic aids like: E-Diff, ESP Premium, F1-Trac, high-performance ABS systems and SCM-E variable dampers, will mean the f12’s more drivable than it has any right to be. Hell, if you’re interested, Ferrari’s even increased luggage space. But what’s the cost of all these improvements? Well, nothing’s official yet, but prepare yourself for a figure around the £250,000 mark, to avoid disappointment. Let’s hope they accept cheques. Words by Russell Campbell

TREVOR LAKE IS... THE BUSINESS DOCTOR
“
Each month we catch up with Mr Lake from the LB Group and ask him to answer your business related questions.
I look after the payroll for a group of companies and understand that there is a change in the way that HMRC deal with PAYE and payroll that will fundamentally change the way that we operate. Would it be possible to explain this in some more detail as it seems very daunting?
“
Indeed, the PAYE system is due to undergo its biggest change in over 60 years in 2013, with the introduction of Real Time Information (RTI). Whereas previously you would inform the government yearly of the deductions made from your payroll, this is now done on a monthly basis. This overhaul of the PAYE system, driven by the new Pension’s Scheme discussed, will allow HMRC to review everyone’s payroll on a monthly basis to reduce the level of incorrect PAYE codes for which they have been much criticised. In some cases this has taken years to resolve, and HMRC hope that RTI will streamline the whole process of keeping track of employees in all sectors and of course ensuring HMRC are paid on time. The main concern however, especially with SME’s that have a large number of part-time employees and subcontractors, is the cost of implementing a system requiring accurate data transmission in a very tight deadline. It very much appears that under RTI, HMRC is making companies do their work for them. There is no hiding from RTI, with HMRC now able to instantly update records for late submission and payment, which with the new punitive PAYE fines could cause many financial problems. The best course of action is therefore to start planning immediately and to see whether your HR and payroll function is capable of implementing RTI or whether a new course of action is required. In order to prepare for the introduction of RTI, in all cases, we recommend that you seek the advice of a payroll expert. They will help to ensure that you and your company’s systems are fully ready for the RTI and any issues that may arise.

- Frances Furlong A DAY IN THE LIFE OF FRANCES FURLONG, RGN BSC HONS INP AESTHETIC NURSE CONSULTANT AND OWNER OF PERFECT SKIN. am always up by 6.30am. But before I can think about breakfast, I have a toddler to get ready. Balancing being a mum and having a business is not easy. But I am lucky that my business allows the flexibility to spend time with my daughter Sophia. I am fortunate that I have never had to choose between my career and watching my daughter grow up. Once I have seen Sophia off to nursery, then I head off to one of my eight clinics across Essex, Suffolk, Knightsbridge and Harley Street. Sharing my working week across such a variety of different clinic ensures that no two days are the same. The type of treatments requested vary a remarkable amount dependent on the location. In the Knightsbridge clinic the majority of clients are for dermatological treatments, particularly for skin pigmentation disorders, whilst my Essex clientèle tend to favour the more glamorous treatments, like lip plumping. I usually arrive at that day's clinic at 9.30 and can often work right the way through until the evening. On a quiet day I will see around 12 patients, on a busier one the figure is closer to 25. Even with seeing up to 25 clients a day, Perfect Skin, my mobile practitioner business, has a waiting list of up to six weeks in some areas.
However, despite the waiting list, I still insist on providing all my clients with a free 30 minute consultation before embarking on any treatment plan. I find this time is important to establish a persons medical history, their lifestyle and what they want or hope to achieve. Working ethically is very important to me. I am passionate about regulating my industry. As a registered adult nurse, having an honours degree in aesthetic medicine and having qualified from the University of Essex as an independent nurse prescriber, a title which grants me the same ability to proscribe medication as a doctor, I have the medical and ethical understanding needed to perform the treatments I offer safely and to the best effect. But it is frightening to think the same treatments can and are offered by unqualified beauty therapists. I would always recommend anyone considering aesthetic treatments do their homework first and ensure the person wielding the needle is medically qualified and not a cowboy.

I have not always been a mobile practitioner. I qualified as a Registered Adult Nurse in 1999 from St Bartholomew's Hospital, London specialising in acute medicine within the NHS at The Royal London Hospital. Before moving into laser ophthalmology and then onto laser dermatology and aesthetics.
It was, however, the birth of Sophia that lead me to create Perfect Skin. Realising that I didn't want to work up in The City six days a week. I spotted a gap in the market for people who wanted access to the very best in aesthetic treatments without having to travel into London. As let’s face it taking the tube is the last thing you want to do post treatment, I decided to set up a service that did just that.
Since then Perfect Skin has been more of a success than I could have possibly hoped for and I was particularly proud to come second last year in the first ever Aesthetic Awards in the Best Mobile Practioner category. The achievement meant all the more as the award was in part voted for by my clients. The day ends with my husband-to-be Matt and I putting my daughter to bed. Reading a three year old a bed time story may not sound as luxurious as a hot bath or a glass of champagne, but I have to say it is the most relaxing and restorative treatment I have ever come across.
