Ten Reasons To Visit Vienna
What’s On
MAY 2012
£500
fter a very soggy April, May’s mix of sunshine and happy vibes has put me in the mood for... camping! ‘Ergh!’ I can already hear my husband say, following the last under-canvas-misadventure which, as dawn was rising, saw him spring up from his rather deflated air bed, bang his head on a tent pole and declare ‘I’m just not doing this anymore!’
06 09 10
Lurking within a tent is not everyone’s cup of holiday tea. There are those who relish the green fields, fresh air, conversation around the campfire and there are those who would take refuge under the nearest hotel’s king size duvet at the mere mention of a ground sheet. Pardon the pun, but I like to think I have a foot in both camps, loving both the taste of toasted marshmallows but also not wanting to go without a hot shower.
17
If like me, you enjoy nothing more than a summer weekend spent in a field, family in tow, surrounded by teepees, the sound of a headliner taking to a very large stage, then Danny Cheesewright’s comprehensive guide to this year’s biggest and best festivals is a must read. If, however you don’t really count it as a break unless passports are involved, take a peek at ‘Viva Vienna’ where Paula Milton gives us ten reasons to visit one of Europe’s most beautiful cultural hubs. For those indulging their wanderlust in the coming months, Fashion Editor Rose Keen picks her selection of the most fashionable fillers for the smallest of suitcases. And for something a little closer to home, we embrace Essex’s newly found tourist attraction status with our A to Z of the best the region has to offer. Great for visitors and locals alike, this alphabet of Essex’s hidden gems is enough to make me want to pitch my tent at home this summer.

Every fashion week has a one name synonymous with its catwalk – For New york its Karlie Kloss, for London its Kate Moss and for Essex its Amy Childs. Who better then than the 21 year old to open the most recent Essex Fashion Week? Essex’s most famous red head took to the home county catwalk in a series of outfits from her latest collection. Ms. Childs was not the only famous face to be spotted at the event. Amy was joined by her cousin Harry Derbridge dressed in silver jeans and Jessica Wright whose range ‘With Love Jess’ was showcased at the event. We also scouted previous iN cover boy Kirk Norcross on the red carpet and TOWIE favourite and notable style icon Nanna Pat, who was working an on trend ensemble of summer brights. Lauren Goodger was also spotted at the fashion event looking happy and laid back in a simple white shirt and was overheard remising about on-again-off-again love interest Mr. Wright – ‘My bestever kiss? It was probably with my ex Mark’. Essex Fashion Week founders Adam and Simon Ryan looked happy as once again they successfully showcased what Essex has to offer the world of fashion.

in Welcome to iN’s society column, ‘Girl About town’ where socialite Caroline polledri gives her own hilarious take on being out and about in Essex and beyond. eekend festivals, music festivals, family festivals, secret festivals, beer festivals, rock festivals, food festivals, dance festivals, film festivals, marshmallow eating popcorn festivals (I made the last one up) and the list goes on. I like to think that I have attended my fare share of festivals. This year I found myself at the ‘Miami 2012 Music Conference’.
“
Arriving at South Beach, I was a little alarmed by the 6ft tall, 20 something’s, wearing little more than a bikini and a pair of heels but after I’d deposited my bags, had my first shot of Tequila, I too was parading around, (but not as naked). To be honest, I felt as though I was gate crashing ‘Spring Break’ but the truth is - I loved Miami and Miami loved me. As luck would have it, I had no problem gaining entry to some of the most exclusive parties - but that is not where my story takes you. Picture this, my friends and I are heading back to the hotel after dinner and drinks at Sushi Samba. Making our way along Collins Avenue, I am tipsy but not drunk. Walking passed a bar, I hear singing drifting from the basement and find myself magically drawn to the strange hypnotic chants luring me from below. Leading the way down the winding stairs I find myself in what could only be described as the darkest most dingiest club in Miami (possibly the world)! The loos didn’t have any doors, the cups were plastic and they used napkins for toilet roll. How we found this place I have no idea, in fact I have a feeling it was all a dream. You’d think that at this point one of us would have turned on our heels and ran, but no, something made us stay, it was so random we had to! There we were, in a room full of people from Brooklyn, feeling like extra’s from the rap movie ‘8 Mile’ and as I watched and cheered rapper after rapper, exploiting their lyrical wares, a wave of bravery came over me. Before I knew it, I had slipped the DJ my written ticketed request for Warren G’s, ‘Regulate’ and then as if by magic... we were on that stage, rapping and spitting bars with the best of the best. And when I say we were rubbish, we weren’t, we were actually worse than that. The crowd was just as shocked as we were, clearly down to our gallantry rather than the flow of our 90’s rap. I left the nondescript bar with a sense of achievement and some new found friends from Brooklyn.
VICTORIA’S SECRET – Heaven, or rather LA, will be missing a few angels as luxury US lingerie brand Victoria Secret opens its first (and huge) UK flagship on New Bond Street this summer. The label is most famous for its catwalk show featuring its be-winged scantily clad supermodel Angels - who have included Heidi Klum, Gisele Bundchen, Miranda Kerr, Doutzen Kroes, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley to name but a few.
CHARLES HEIDSIECK – Is there any better sound than a cork popping? We think not. Particularly if the cork happens to belong to the most awarded Champagne house in the world. Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Reserve RRP £31.99.
MARSHMALLOWS – The hottest thing in confectionary since the cupcake, artisan versions of the camp fire favourite are currently the most fashionable way to placate your sugar cravings. Our favourite comes from award winning confectioners Confektz’s, whose marshmallows come in decidedly grown up flavours such Morello cherry, Turkish rose and scotch.
out THE TRADITIONAL 9 ‘TIL 5 – The economic downturn and the proliferation of mobile technology means more of us than ever before are adopting a more flexible multi-role work life.
BRICK STICK – Samantha ‘Girls hate me because I am beautiful’ Brick’s article for the Daily Mail and its associated media storm has been a matter of much debate this month – the question being is she just deluded or was it all a very clever PR stunt? Either way, we don’t expect the bridesmaid offers will be pouring in for Ms. Brick anytime soon.
MAKING DECISIONS – With the rise of curated subscription services and apps, for a fee we no longer have to decide what to wear, eat, read, listen to or buy. Is this the answer to the tyranny of choice or the end of personality?

And of course sample the freshly prepared pizzas and pastas that form the heart of the new restaurant’s menu. Ah the glorious English summer and its festivals. Rain or shine, the great outdoors just adds that extra something to seeing your favourite artists perform live. And now with so many festivals in the mix you are literally spoilt for choice – which can only be a good thing. For our 2012 guide we decided that the jolly green giants and monsters of rock could be met with events of a more subtle nature, so we’ve kick-started our feature with some easier options. Plus with our editor’s new arrival we thought it only fitting to keep things in the family way and focus on some of the gentler ways to spend your camping days. From the Yorkshire Dales to the Garden of England, the modern festival landscape has turned into something quite lovely. in MAGAZINE 33

With Yildiz Costi From
Yildiz Home Spa iN: So Yildiz, tell me what Yildiz Home Spa has to offer? YC: To start, 16 years worth of beauty experience. I personally have been teaching for 6 years, my team of beauty therapists all have a minimum of 5 years experience and are all trained to Level 3 NVQ City & Guilds, which is unusual. We offer beauty treatments, with proffessional therapists in the luxury of your own home. iN:
That’s a busy schedule! How does it work having a team of therapists out and about on the road? YC: Really well, it means that we can tend to our portfolio of clients with ease, never letting them down and can increase our portfolio, without it having an impact on the existing clients we already have on our books.
iN: What would you say was your most popular treatment? YC: It has to be the Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion, but we also cater for a varied range of treatments from waxing to massage to beauty parties for teenagers. Having a teenage daughter myself, I understand how important a good skincare routine is and pass my knowledge on in my classes, plus the all important how to apply day make-up! iN: Who would you say is your target audience? YC: Everyone who is interested in looking after their bodies. Presently our clients include celebrity footballers, TV presenters through to my daughters friends and their Mums. We cover areas from Hampstead, all around London through to Brentwood, Ongar, Loughton & Epping. And all the areas inbetween. iN:
Gosh, that’s quite an area! You have quite a budding business head when it comes to beauty. How did it all start? YC: 14 years ago my beautiful daughter Millie was born. I was on my own with a newborn baby; it had to work. I threw my life and soul into making a future for her, so that we could enjoy the best life together. Millie is the best thing that could have happened to me, it gave me vision and focus to achieve the unachievable. As a Mum I am very proud of her and know she is of me too.

PIP BREAST IMPLANTS THE LOW DOWN iN Magazine caught up with Rebecca Luxton, (clinical nurse specialist in plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery & burns care) director of Luxton Aesthetics, to talk PIP. The implants in question are the French Poly-Implant Prostheses (PIP) used in breast surgery. It is said that over 47,000 women could be affected. What are the problems associated with PIP? The two main risks are rupture and leakage. This applies to ALL implants, not just PIP. However, when high quality implants leak, the silicone stays within the capsule in one piece. It is thought that the lower grade silicone used in PIP may not do this and may leak outside of the capsule. Can they cause cancer? No. The cancer link has now been firmly discounted by medical experts both in the UK and Europe. How will I know if I have them? All women with PIP implants should be contacted by their surgeon. If you are experiencing tenderness and pain, or the breast appears swollen, misshapen or firm, you should get in contact with your surgeon. Please be aware though that this can happen to any implant, not just PIP. Should all PIP implants be removed? According to the Department of Health, it was concluded that there is not enough evidence to suggest their early removal. Implants generally last 10 years or more, and it is expected that they will need exchanging at some point anyway. However the more recent implants have a life time guarantee, and may therefore not need replacing for many years. Can I get them changed on the NHS? Only 10% of the recorded patients had breast surgery with the NHS. That 10% can return to their doctor and potentially get the implants removed for free. Should the NHS take the blame, costs and responsibility of the other 90% though? Personally, I don’t think so. It should be the surgeon who originally used the implants that takes responsibility and removes the implants, if necessary. So far, surgeons have appeared more than happy to review their patients following the scare, and will advise accordingly. In summary: • Implants should only be removed if there is a medical need. • All implants are at risk of rupture, hardening, and need of removal. • If you are concerned, book a follow-up appointment with your surgeon, for advice.

“GeT oUT! GeT FiT! GeT To essex BooT caMP! Take 14 people of various different ages and fitness levels, give them the highest free standing mountain in the world, throw essex Boot camp into the equation some hard work, sweat and laughter and what you are left with? iN Magazine’s editor, Zoe Hopkins, gives us her first hand experience training with essex Boot camp. Nervously, myself and our expedition team stood at the crest of Staples Hill at High Beech, nervously twitching and secretly sizing each other up. It was a fresh day, but the sun was shining and the air was fresh. Some were clearly suffering from the intoxications of the night before, others from a bad diet and too many cigarettes.
‘Chop Chop, there is no time for late contenders!’ our trainer shouted. These were instructions from a man military derived - what should I have expected, the term ‘Boot Camp’ is taken from the barracks themselves, our personal instructor Glynn had breathed Royal Marine life for a number of years. Some of our team were ‘super human, keep fit fanatics’, others like me - well the nearest I had come to working up a sweat was walking up the underground escalators on a Monday morning, with the ever so good/but ever so easy to give up intentions of the week. At Essex Boot Camp you really couldn’t get a more authentic military experience. It’s a fantastic feeling. The sun, the breeze, the air and a very fit instructor, who offers expertise and a little window of what training in the Royal Marines is really like.
An hour at Essex Boot Camp and the adrenaline pumps through your veins, there is plenty of laughter and when it’s wet, mud! Essex Boot Camp kept myself and our expedition team focused and on target and in top physique. Just Married Laura & Anthony Barrowcliff It was a case of ‘happy ever after’ when pantomime producer Laura Taylor married Anthony Barrowcliff at the lovely Gaynes Park, where even the pouring rain couldn’t dampen the mood. Let’s start at the beginning. How did you two meet? Laura: Anthony was a friend of my brothers from school. When we first met, Anthony had fluffy hair and glasses and was so shy that he would never speak to me. After he pursued me for a long time and also discovered hair gel and contact lenses, I gave in.
We know most brides want their weddings to be fairytales, but we hear your nuptials had more than a sprinkling of fairy dust. Laura: There was a very unusual theme running through the whole day – pantomime! Our save the date cards were fairy wands and my graphic designer friend made us a spoof pantomime programme instead of a traditional order of service. It featured Anthony and myself on the cover in panto costume and inside we had photographs and biographies of the wedding party. Anthony: As Laura has worked in the pantomime industry for the last 16 years we thought it was only right to bring a little panto magic to her big day.
What a fun theme! Can you tell us about the wedding dress or was your fairy godmother responsible? Laura: Every time I flicked through a wedding magazine the dresses that caught my eye all seemed to be by the same designer - Sassi Holford. So my Chief Bridesmaid and I found the nearest stockist and when we got to the shop, it was the dress ‘Beatrice’ by Sassi Holford that caught my eye! As soon as I put the dress on I knew it was ‘my dress’.
And the day itself, what was your favourite moment? Laura: Walking up the aisle. As it was raining, Dad held the umbrella for me and as we went under the gate arch he knocked the umbrella and there was a huge downpour of water all over my dress. This caused us both to burst out laughing. It was such a funny moment and the photographer managed to catch it perfectly. It has become one of my favourite photographs of the day.
And before we leave you two to live ‘happily ever after’, we hear there was quite a surprise ending to your fairytale day... Laura: After the three traditional speeches a TV was wheeled out and a series of video messages were played from various pantomime artists that I have worked with including David Hasselhoff, Bobby Davro, Christopher Biggins and Jim Davidson and to top it off last message from Robbie Williams - my all-time idol. To say I was gob smacked is putting it mildly! I have a copy of that DVD and will cherish it forever. It has got to be the most special, unique wedding present I could have ever wished for. Big estates used to be the obvious family car, iN Magazine’s Russell Campbell drives a 508 SW to see if they still should be.
hings used to be so simple in the car world. Young families had small family cars; older families had big family cars and families with a dog bought an estate. Now you’re faced with a minefield of jeeps and crossovers, big people carriers, small people carries and hybrids, and that’s before you consider the small matter of badge kudos. So what if, anything, is wrong with a bread-and-butter estate car? We borrowed the new Peugeot 508 GT SW to find out.
windows, iPod connectable stereo, cruise control and adds to these sat-nav, a panoramic sunroof (which brought an airiness to the cabin), parking sensors (with optional space measuring function), leather and heated front seats with a massaging driver’s seat, and a head-up display. Safety is covered by bi-beam xenon headlamps with Smart Beam Assistance (which automtically switches between full and dipped beam) and directional lighting. ESP and six airbags give the 508 a five-star NCAP rating. The GT also comes with Peugeot Connect SOS, which alerts the emergency services in the event of an accident.
First impressions of the 508 (especially in regards to the GT trim we borrowed) are that it is far from a bread-and-butter car. This has got to be one of the best looking estates on the market. Peugeot has managed to give the 508 the substantial look of a German machine, but with a strong hint of its french roots. There’s a wide stance and strong shoulder-line, which runs front to rear, yet it still remains sleek and appealing. Our test car’s optional Capella 19” wheels, twin exhaust pipes and chrome roof bars added an extra premium feel.
Passenger space inside is excellent, with plenty of room in the back inspite of who’s sitting in the front. There’s also cupholders, large door-bins, sunblinds and separate heating controls for the rear-seat passengers. Boot space isn’t class leading at 512 litres with the rear seats up and 1598 litres with them down, but this would be the payoff for the 508 SW’s more shapely rear quarters.
This continues inside, where the dashboard is clear, made up of squidgy-touch quality plastics and flashes of chrome, and the large transmission tunnel give a sporty feel. The GT model comes specced to the gunnels with the usual supects of all-round electric
The only real disappointments in the cabin would be a sat-nav and entertainment system, which isn’t touchscreen and with controls high and low on the dash which could be more intuitive, and a seat that I couldn’t get absolutely comfortable in.

SAME CONVINCING STORY… Anyone looking for a small mid-engined sports car with ‘do-anything’ ability, a premium badge and sporty looks, has been left with a simple choice and it’s called the Porsche Boxster. Despite the old one being far from passed it sell-by-date there’s a new one in town (codenamed the 981) and like with any new Porsche, it looks much the same as the old one. So what’s the difference? This a tricky question, but look closer and the new model looks hunkered down, wider, longer and somehow prettier than the old one. A new rear wing, wider air ducts and bigger wheels throw a touch more masculinity into the mix. Changes to the cabin follow much the same approach. It is undeniably a Boxster, but improved materials and a more imposing transmission tunnel bring with them a more grown up feel.
The GT comes equipped with Peugeot’s 2.2 HDi FAP diesel engine. It produces 200bhp, but more important is the engine’s 332Ib ft of torque, which is significantly more than Porsche will give you in the new 911S. It makes for effortless progress and suits the GT’s standard-fit 6-speed auto ‘box’s, which changes gear smoothly in normal mode and changes down for overtaking for overtaking. In sport mode gears are held on to longer and acceleration is more readily available; there’s also paddles behind the steering wheel if you fancy choosing the gears yourself. In raw performance terms the GT will top out at 138mph and 0-60mph in 8.4 seconds. Cruising is one of this car’s strengths though thanks to the refined cabin and lazy torque reserves, and it should be good for around 50mpg. If you don’t fancy the motorway then the 508 is surprisingly fun to spirit along. The GT model comes equipped with double-wishbone suspension, which should give added dynamism over lesser models. Certainly it corners positively with little body roll and plenty of grip. The steering’s not as feelsome as it could be, but it is positive and accurate.
The big talk, in motoring circles at least, is the electric power steering, which the purists say dampens the experience. To us it means better MPG figures and most will agree that’s a good thing. So despite giving 345bhp, 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 173mph, the new Boxster can still muster over 30mpg at a cruise. The mid-engined two-seater layout means this will never be the most practical of cars, but then what sports car is? And what sports car is meant to be? Better to drop the hood and enjoy the wind in your hair, the abundant character of the flat-six engine note and the perfect balance of the little Porsche’s chassis. At over £45,000 we’re not going to argue it’s cheap, though next to the 911 (which starts at over £70,000) it’s a bargain. Forget getting thin, if ever there was a reason to stop eating this would be it.
So is the big family estate still a viable choice? In the form of the 508 GT SW the answer would have to be an emphatic yes. Compared to Jeeps and soft roaders, it is fast, frugal and refined. Yet it compete with the premium feel and engaging drive of small executive car, while giving far more in terms of engine and equipment for the price. That it is also the most handsome car in sector makes it all the more easy to part with the £30k, we would certainly be tempted. Words by Russell Campbell

Each month we catch up with Mr Lake from the LB Group and ask him to answer your business related questions.
I run a 2 partner solicitor’s practice. I have seen that my firm can now become a limited company but this all seems quite complicated, is it? And is it worth doing in the first place? Sebastian Cole, Chingford
The opportunity does now exist to incorporate your practice as a limited company and take advantage of the significant tax benefits that come with it. This is not for all practices dependent on how they are set up, but where it can work, the tax benefits can be quite substantial. For example incorporation works for practices where they have a settled and established partnership and a clear and simple profit share structure. By incorporating your practice you are effectively ‘selling’ your current practice to you own limited company, crystallising the value of your business as you do. The ‘sale’ of your business will allow you to take advantage of the entrepreneur’s relief available on business disposals and access to an effective 10% tax rate. The company will effectively owe the partners the ‘value’ of the business which they can then draw out at as and when cash flow allows effectively paying 10% tax on these drawings rather than the 40 and 50% they were paying previously. Ongoing you will also be able to structure your personal and corporate tax affairs efficiently taking advantage of operating your business through a company. Incorporating your practice is not too onerous provided your accountants are switched on. You should be able to carry on as business as usual without much time being spent on administering the change.
You will need assistance with:• Completing and filing all forms required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority • Valuation of your practice (the sale value to the company) to meet HM Revenue & Customs standards • Guidance on all other aspects such as the transfer of staff and PI insurance.
if you have an accountancy related question that you would like LB Group to answer in a forthcoming issue, please email editor@in-magazine.com. trevor Lake, a Director, can be contacted by telephone on 020 8221 8282 or by email at trevor.lake@lbgroupltd.com

Profile - Gemma Mustafa Proprietor of Visage Beauty
wake up at 7am every morning, I make myself a cup of tea, turn on my iPad and remind myself of my itinerary of the day. My working week is generally extremely busy; I am the proprietor of an established beauty salon ‘Visage’, and over the past 14 years have built the business to a comfortable size. Visage has a varied portfolio of clientele and am fortunate to have a wonderful, friendly and professional team that support me and the business. Recently, we have expanded our home treatments where we visit clients in the comfort of their own homes.

My facials use derma relaxants, others use 24 carat Gold and even real chocolate! It is important that I can offer facials that suit everyone and every age.
Some of my clients like to have a good old natter, others like the solitude of a massage. No two days are ever the same. I grab a sandwich for lunch then head to a client who I have pampered for 20 years. She always jokes that I have become part of the family and it is lovely to have that level of care and continuity.
Today is a busy day for home beauty visits. I relax with my cup of tea, look out the window and enjoy the calm, as I know the whirl-wind is soon to begin. I have two sons, Altan and Tarkan. I wake them at 7.20am, make their breakfast, check their school bags and kiss them goodbye. I am fortunate that my husband can take both boys to school.
Late afternoon, I manage to get to the gym for an hour. After a work out I pick up a salad and drink, and head back to the salon for a busy evening. Tonight I have party of 6 girls aged 1315. I am teaching them the art of applying make-up, then they are having their nails painted; I look forward to these kind of nights as the younger girls are always giggly and fun to watch and be with.
With a bowl of porridge in my hand, I prepare for the day. Today’s first client is one of my VIP’s. I call him a VIP as I never disclose names.
Our VIP’s like the fact that I am discreet, they are all celebrities of some description; footballer, reality TV star. These clients prefer to be treated away from a salon environment and in the privacy of their own home. At Visage we always wear a uniform and have been trained to be professional, friendly and discreet at all times, this helps put the trust into our working relationships. An hour passes quickly and I jump into my car to visit my next booking. Thankfully, her children love a good Disney film and it gives me just enough time to tend to her fortnightly beauty regime. What I love about my job, is the diversity.
