LIGHT MY
ay November is here, but where has the year gone? It only seems like yesterday when I was wrapped up in a snuggly jumper, cashmere socks and the obligatory pair of Uggs. So what has been keeping us all entertained at iN Towers? Essex Fashion Week was a blast, well done to Adam Ryan and his team, you can catch up with all the gossip on page 8. Our front cover is courtesy of Lauren Goodger, and on page 29 Lauren’s Way brings us Lauren’s most loved beauty stocking fillers, perfect for a quick Christmas shop. We couldn’t resist a cozy fireplace in November, be inspired on page 32, perfect for keeping the wintry chill at bay. Woodford saw the launch of Clarke Hillyer, page 17, and the whole of Essex, glow sticks in hand, lit up the streets of Woodford in support of the Haven House Glo-Walk. It was fantastic to see such patronage from the local community. Sue Lovett caught up with Sytner BMW on page 42 who wowed her with their new concept showroom in Loughton and Russel Campbell got all hot around the collars whilst reviewing the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. Phew, that is quite some content! And just before I bid you farewell, I hope to see you all on the 23 November for The Mayor of Redbridge Charity Appeal where the lovely Craig Neil will be performing. Do check out our What’s On Guide for more info. Until then...

Essex Fashion Week AW 2012
iN Magazine saw celebrities such as TOWIE stars Jessica Wright, Harry Derbidge, Kirk Norcross, Cara Kilbey, Billie Mucklow, Frankie Essex, Chloe Simms, Gemma Collins, Diags and Bobby. There were also other known reality faces from Big Brother, The Valley’s, Take Me Out and even retro pop star Bradley McIntosh from S Club 7.
n impressive red carpet, champagne and cupcake reception greeted celebrities and all Essex finest’s at Essex Fashion Week AW 2012. As guests arrived, impeccably dressed in outfits fit for Hollywood, their limousines were besieged by paparazzi and film crews. A throng of fashionistas continued inside The Ceme Conference Centre, Rainham, as a magnificent Essex Fashion Week shopping mall tempted eager shoppers, before the live shows.
‘The EFW team would like to thank everyone for their involvement and support and look forward to seeing you fashionably ready for the next show in Spring Summer 2013.’ Adam Ryan
Supported by Tresor Paris, Essex Fashion Week did little to break down the Essex stereo-type, with VIP's parading their bronzed skin, dazzling white teeth and huge eyelashes that cast their own shadows. But this is our Essex, and this is how the Essex girl rolls. Even two fairy Princess Chug’s adorned the red carpet - a cross between a Chihuahua and a Pug - before Hybrid Fashion, Harry’s World (Harry Derbidge), Masato, Bowtique, Cadi’s Closet, Marbella Belles, Totally Essex, Denise Van Weenen, Tresor Paris, Dolly Rocker Kids, Strip Lingerie, Starship Boutique (Chloe Simms), Essex Emporium (Frankie Essex), Utter Nutter, Snapback Boy and With Love Jess (Jessica Wright) took to the catwalk. Hosted by Adam and Simon Ryan, and presenter Amy Childs, the runway was set to thrill as high end met high street. The models looked amazing as they thrilled the audience. Balcony table seating, housed the VIP guests, where a three course meal was served. Guests seemed thrilled with their goody bags, as they were seated. Other guests and celebrities were seated catwalk side. Other sponsors of the event included Dingwuddles, Strip Boutique Loughton, Cocobahloo.com, Kosho, BeSomebody and Ciroc Vodka. Surprise entertainment throughout the show included local singing talent Tony Roberts from Britains Got Talent and 2Shoes from The X-Factor. As Essex Fashion Week came to a close, the after-party kicked off with a ‘live performance’ by chart topping, urban act ‘Roll Deep’, as the show came to a close and entertained 2,000 plus guests until the early hours of the morning. 8 in MAGAZINE

Welcome to iN’s society column, ‘Girl about Town’ where socialite Caroline Polledri expresses her feelings about the iTV1 show, X Factor.
“
have tried my hardest not to mention the X Factor in this month’s column but, I can think of very little else. I’ve spent a lot of time threatening to boycott the show (as if) due to the incredulity that Ryan (I refuse to call him Rylan as I am convinced he put that L in himself) got through. This left myself (and many others) seething, until a very good point was aired in my presence, whilst I was partaking in my favourite daily pass time, ear wigging! My ear wigged ‘subject’ voiced, ‘The producers must be ‘loving’ the reaction to all the staged drama and the amount of money they are raking in from the idiots that are now thinking, ‘oh, I must vote for my favourite singer as in this show, anything could happen’ and then he laughed, like he was the cleverest man in the world and to me that day, he was. So there I am feeling like a classic fool but now passing his opinion to be my own, pretending that I too were clever and that I knew the secret X factor code. And whilst delving into the history of the X factor, I suddenly had an epiphany! All this is a little more sinister than just rigging the votes. No! This talent show features one major technique, one tool that is used to lure the viewer to vote. One main medium for the propaganda, which leads us to believe we actually care who wins and that the contestants really are vying for something. And what is this powerful force of destruction I hear you ask? Well, I’ll tell you – it’s Louis F-ing Walsh, he’s the insider we’re all after, he’s our mole! Think about it, he always gets the last vote, doesn’t he? I bet that’s so he’ll choose according to what works for TV and of course he’ll do anything the bosses say, he’s X factor’s biggest cheerleader and a bit wimpy. Plus, he hasn’t got any credibility to lose and what other job could he do? Well, I can think of one but I wouldn’t want it printed. So, all-in-all my loyal readers, please be aware (yet still enjoy) that this isn’t a talent show it’s an entertainment show which is all very well but know this: while we were busy sniggering at the delusional audition-ees, ultimately the joke is on us. And we all know who’ll have the last laugh, don’t we Louis?

Clarke Hillyer launched in Woodford amidst a frenzy of media hype as the Right Hon. iain Duncan Smith mP ceremoniously cut the ribbon and declared the branch open. Clarke Hillyer’s newest addition to their residential Sales and Lettings division saw local investors, property developers and business owners come together at their uber modern glass showroom. Established in 1885 and based in the Walthamstow area of East London, the business recently ventured into the Essex area and has launched an additional office and showroom this year; Sales and Lettings in Woodford and Surveying and Property Management in Loughton. The Woodford Showroom has been designed sympathetically, with minimalist lines and dramatic lighting enticing the local commuters. A great deal of thought and hard work has been put into creating the new branch and Clarke Hillyer is confident all their efforts will have a dramatic effect on home owners who are placing their property in their capable hands. Whilst champagne and canapés were circulated, guests discussed the current market with some of Clarke Hillyers team of professionals. Iain Duncan Smith MP congratulated them on their new venture, before guests headed to The Vault Wine bar for further drinks.
Managing Director Rob Ellice enthused,
‘It has been an incredible year for Clarke Hillyer and I wish to congratulate the team on their hard work and enthusiasm for our latest venture.’ If you have property you are interested in selling or letting, or indeed if you are looking to buy or rent, please contact Clarke Hillyer today at their new Woodford office on 020 8506 9800. Their friendly team is waiting to hear from you and is happy to offer their professional advice.

Launches & Events ESSEX RESiDENTS uNiTE aT HaVEN HOuSE’S aNNuaL GLOWaLk Debbie Douglas from iTV2's The Only Way is Essex launched Haven House's annual GLOWalk, a sponsored walk to raise funds for life-limited children and their families in the local area. The sponsored night-time walk, the hospice’s lightest and brightest event, attracted over 300 walkers, who wore brightly-coloured clothing and carried glo-sticks through out the 10km course. Local Zumba instructor, Dawn Lawson, warmed-up the walkers ready for the 7.30pm start which saw children and adults pounding the pavements of South Woodford and Wanstead. The event raised in excess of £18,000 which is an incredible achievement.
'It was inspiring to see so many local children and adults glowing and walking in aid of Haven House. The money raised will help to support local children with life-limited illnesses and their families.’ Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of Haven House. Other local residents who took part, included Mel Field of Darnley Road, Woodford Green who has raised an amazing £46,000 for Haven House so far, in memory of her daughter Molly, who sadly died in 2010. Mel was joined by a number of mums and children from Churchfields School in South Woodford, where Molly was a pupil.

A DIARY oF A Nearly 40 Mum ‘Mum, you can’t have high definition brows,’ my son retorted after I had disclosed my eagerly anticipated appointment for Strip Boutique in Loughton, ‘it’s just wrong.’ You see, my teenage son has a slight problem with the fact that I am in my nearly forties, but still take pride in how I look and in my appearance.
And why shouldn’t I? Forty isn’t a sell by date, an excuse to wear ‘fuddy-duddy’ clothes, grow everything hairy and lose sight of how to look good. Forty is a time to embrace the finer things in life; finer lines, finer lips and for now, finer eyebrows! Not intimidated by the male mannequin boasting a very small pair of Bjorn boxers, and an equally scantily clad female clone, I held my breath and walked into, for what some would say on first appearance, a lingerie boutique. As if by magic, a glamourous shop keeper appeared.* For 45 minutes I was waxed, trimmed, threaded, measured and tinted, until what was produced was a marvelous set of HD Brows. And without any pain or being left red and blotchy, thanks to a little dusting of mineral powder. As I blithely chatted to my therapist, I felt for that moment, me again. Not, ‘Mum of four at nearly forty’! As I looked for the door that led to a little adventure, I was transported to... Well, nothing actually happened! Or did it? I feel younger, more confident. I look pruned and defined. Yes, I love the feel of my new look. A beauty regime is hard to incorporate into a daily routine of the life of a nearly forty. Playing taxi-driver, cleaner, chef, tutor and business woman in one day takes its toll but it should not be ignored. Embracing gravity and cultivating forests should be eradicated from any agenda, swiftly! Strip Boutique in Loughton, is cool, calm and oozes sophistication. So if you are looking for a snippet of a young persons adventure for an older person, without having to put on a costume, give the girls at Strip Boutique a call for some well deserved Strip time. *Young Person: You Tube ‘Mr Ben’!

ith the weather outside still decidedly chilly, there is little as appealing as snuggling up in the heat of your very own fire. But for those of us who do not happen to reside in a country pile, and whose dining rooms lack a single exposed beam, it can be difficult to imagine the traditional open range fitting into the modern domestic sphere, both in terms of interior aesthetics and load-bearing walls.

Utterly cutting edge and just the right degree of futuristic, these stand alone wall designs make a unique and interesting focal point of any room without the need for any architectural rearrangement. 2. Season the beef on all sides with salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Heat one tablespoon of oil in a large heavy-based frying pan. Fry the blade over a medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes on each sides, or until browned. Transfer the beef into a deep pot or tray. 3. Return the frying pan to the hob and reduce the heat. Add the remaining oil and gently fry the shallots, celery and carrots for 6-8 minutes or until golden-brown and softened. Stir in the garlic, cook for a further minute and add the mixture to the beef. 4. Deglaze the pan with wine and allow to bubble for a few seconds, stirring constantly and pour over the meat and vegetables. Stir in the stock, orange juice and tomato purée. Strip the thyme leaves from the stalks and scatter into the pan, add the bay leaf and mustard and stir until well combined. Bring to the boil and remove the dish from the heat. 5. Cover the surface of meat and liquid carefully with a piece of greaseproof paper. Place a lid on top and cook in the oven for 7-7½ hours or until the beef is very tender. Skim any fat away from the surface that appears during cooking. 6. Remove and transfer the meat to a plate. Strain the cooking liquor and vegetables through a sieve into a large non-stick frying pan. Press the vegetables with the bottom of a ladle to extract a rich purée and stir into the cooking liquor. Add salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste. Bring the mixture to a simmer for 3-5 minutes, or until the sauce is well reduced, thick and glossy so this will act as your gravy. 7. Allow the meat to chill, then wrap it in cling film in a cylinder shape and let it set in the fridge overnight. 8. To serve, cut the blade into 1 inch discs and put it onto a baking try with greaseproof underneath and top the blade with a knob of butter and some honey. Heat for around 15 minutes at 200C. 9. Cook your fillet steak to your preference, serve with butternut squash puree, mashed potato then spoon over the sauce to glaze. in MAGAZINE 39

ocated just off junction 5 of the M11, and 200m from Debden Underground Station, Sytner Chigwell is an award winning dealership, one of the first businesses to occupy the impressive frontage of the Langston Road business development site, some seven years ago. BMWs exude sheer driving pleasure and the quality of their products is renowned. However, it is not simply the cars that have made Sytner Chigwell the premier provider of motor products in this area; it is their outstanding service that has seen customers return time and again.
flat tyre she’d been driving her Mini on a runflat tyre for a couple of days. We would only recommend driving on a run-flat for a limited distance and below 50mph. She hadn’t been able to get to a dealership and now the tyre was completely shredded. She was stuck; she had no car, had children to collect and we were about to close. One of our mechanics, who was just about to leave, told her not to worry, he’d run her home. So, she was able to leave the car with us to sort and get home to organise her kids. That demonstrates what a great team we have here.’
‘Our business is focused on customer satisfaction,’ says Managing Director Adrian Hill. ‘We have expanded our customer base through word-of-mouth. It’s the old adage; if you get great service you’ll recommend to a friend and we passionately believe that our future growth is dependent on providing a great service to our customers.’
Adrian stressed that much of Sytners success is due to their staff. ‘Not only do we have a lovely customer base,’ he said, ‘but we are also able to attract good staff. This is a great place to work.’ In fact in the Sunday Times ‘Best Big Companies to Work For’, Sytner have ranked 3rd for the third year running. ‘Employing great people leads to good customer service which leads to customers returning,’ Adrian said.
Sytner Chigwell aim to make the process easy. Whether a customer visits to test drive a car, buy tyres, is in for a service or to fix a curbed wheel, it’s the small things that make their service stand out - for example: being able to drop the car at 7.30am on the way to work, being able to park quickly and easily, and being expected and greeted by name. Sytner Chigwell’s high standards are driven by their Customer Promise. Their ten commitments to customers, published on-line, underscore their resolve to go the extra mile. One commitment to ‘not leave you stranded when bringing in a car for service or repair and it’s impractical to wait’ was recently demonstrated explains Adrian: ‘A customer visited five minutes before we were due to close one Friday evening. Having had a Words by Sue Lovett
Peter Chadwick, General Service Manager added, ‘Our Service Executives enjoy helping people. They ensure that our customers receive a seamless, personal service. Cars are returned properly washed, customers are kept fully informed and all charges are clearly explained. We will always contact our customer following a service to ensure they are happy with their experience.’ Sytner Chigwell’s star ratings, which consistently rank higher than market average, are available to view on-line. Here, real customers are able to post comments and score their sales or service experience. The Langston Road site incorporates a BMW approved used car forecourt and a new car show
room with a complimentary customer coffee lounge. The BMW range is young and technologically clever, incorporating a blend of style, performance and economy that is hard to beat. Central to the future development of their brand is EfficientDynamics – conserving energy without compromising on performance. 2013 will see the launch of BMWs fully electric, premium product brand BMWi. Adrian Hill says, ‘there are no other green cars like it.’ The Mini showroom has a distinctly different feel to its BMW counterpart. With its neon signage and funky style it has a less formal atmosphere – it’s extroverted, spontaneous and in every respect something out of the ordinary, but at the same time no less professional or committed to their customer. The Mini is also a young and continually developing brand. March 2013 sees the launch of the Mini Paceman, styled as a coup interpretation of the Mini Countryman and every bit as iconic as the Mini’s round central Speedo. Next time you find yourself sat at a red light at the junction of Langston Road admiring the dazzling display of BMWs before you, make the turn and pop into Sytner Chigwell - you’ll be glad that you did.

the most powerful road-going ferrari ever built. With 730bhp Ferrari’s new GT, the F12 Berlinetta, challenges for the most powerful rear-wheel drive cars on sale today. Add to that figure 509Ib ft of torque and Maranello’s latest machine can hit 211mph, 0-62mph in 3.1 seconds and 125mph in 8.5 seconds. Not only is it fast, it’s also faster round a track than the firm’s current hypercar - the Enzo - and the old 599 GTO. The performance comes thanks to a 6.3-litre V12. And it looks as fast as it sounds. Ferrari’s are (arguably) a hit and miss affair, but the Berlinetta is everything you could hope for, it has the long bonnet you’d expect, but adds to that manga-like slashes and curves that make the F12 look bang up to date and certainly (we think) one of the prettiest cars on sale today. It’s not all about looks, though. As with many new performance cars, aerodynamics have played a big part in the way the Fezza looks. Massive air vents in the bonnet clean up the car’s air flow, flaps open to aid brake cooling, ducts on the rear-wheel arches prevent pressure build up, and a scoop on the bonnet does the same for the bottom of the windscreen. The F12 is also significantly lighter than the car it replaces, by being lower, narrower and shorter than the 599, and by using a mix of 12 different alloys, the new GT shaves 70kgs of kerb weight from its older brother. Meanwhile, the weight balance - which defines how a car feels in (and out) of the corners - is 46:54. Meaning the F12 is actually heavier at the rear, something almost unheard of for a front-engined car. It means (says Ferrari) that it is perfectly balanced in and resists understeer.
44 in MAGAZINE
The weight balance is mostly down to a gearbox that is mounted behind the rear axle. It a twin-clutch seven-speed system that offers some of the fastest changes in the business and helps give the ridiculous acceleration times. Inside the F12 is classic Ferrari. As with all their latest offerings, adjustment to the way the car drives are carried out via controls on the steering wheel (which looks like it could have been taken from an F1 car), unlike an F1 car the two-seater has, apparently, got plenty space for the two people lucky enough to be sitting in it. Meanwhile, the boot offers up 320 litres, which can be extended to a luxury-saloon rivaling 500 litres by removing a load divider. It even manages reasonable (er... Not really: ed) economy of 18mpg - impressive given the performance - and releases Co2s just over 350g/km.
Of course what really matters is how it drives and that’s sadly not something we here at iN magazine have had the chance to sample, but TopGear magazine has done and said:
‘it has the sharpest steering rack of any ferrari, carbon ceramic brakes that now have more top end bite, and bodyroll has been reduced by 30 per cent from the 599. turn in is 20 per cent faster, and you’ll use 15 per cent less steering angle. but it’s been so well honed. the brakes, steering, throttle, gearbox, all do exactly what you expect. there’s no slack or slop at all, so you always know where you are with it. it sounds ridiculous to say that a car with 730bhp (the same as a pagani huayra, let’s not forget) is a doddle to drive, but this one really is. it drives cleanly and precisely.’ Ultimately Ferrari’s own (and fantastic) 458 Italia may edge the Berlinetta on out-and-out fun, but the GT counters with the ability to be used day-to-day, meaning there really is no reason not to buy one, except for the £240k you’ll need i suppose. Better get saving.
insignia biturbo adds performance to its economy Vauxhall’s Insignia came just at the right time for the British manufacturer, it was good looking. felt well built and handled almost as well as the class leaders, but what it lacked was a powerful diesel engine, a popular choice with fuel costs as they are. This Biturbo diesel has been developed to bridge that gap. As its name suggests, it has two turbo chargers - a little one that works at low revs and larger one that takes over completely at higher revs. The results are best registered in figures and they are: 198bhp, 295Ib ft of torque, 0-60 in 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 143mph. Translated into real world situations, the Biturbo has plenty of go for effortless overtaking and sedate cruising. Meanwhile, economy actually improves over the lower-powered diesel with 57.6mpg versus 55.4mpg and Co2s emissions of 129g/km versus 134g/km. The Insignia also brings FlexRide adaptive dampers, which allow you to choose between softening/hardening the damping settings. The result is a car that is composed and well damped. The car we tested was the sport tourer, Vauxhall’s answer to the estate, it has enough space for a family of five, although its not quite as capacious as the Vectra that it replaced. The dashboard is logically laid out and the car is well specced to include sat nav, heated seats and climate control. With prices starting at £27,120 the BiTrubo is only £1800 more than its slower stablemate, which seems like a bargain for a car that is both faster and more economical.

Property
WORDS BY ROBERT ELLICE These include would-be first time buyers as mentioned above, and property investors looking for rental properties. There is a fundamental undersupply of property due to the lack of completed developments where developers stopped building during the recession. We believe the demand for property alone will cause prices to remain firm. Even though the number of unsold properties has been reported to increase, the unsold stock levels are expected to stay below the long-term trend. One of the reasons for this is growth in population. Inward migration has risen significantly due to the attraction of the UK as an excellent place to work and live. This points to the fact that property remains one of the best long term investments you can make. The only thing that investors need to seriously take into consideration is the location and choosing the right property at the right time. They can then expect to take part in the substantial growth of the property investment market that has been consistently performing well over the last decade.
Having bought Clarke Hillyer, Walthamstow, in 2003 and since launched two further offices, Loughton and Woodford; Managing Director Robert Ellice, brings a plethora of knowledge from the ‘Property Asset Management’ sector. n a recent report for the government by Sir Adrian Montague, it stated that institutional investors could fund the large-scale building of private housing for rent. Montague also mentioned that recent tax changes and wider market conditions could help the sector to grow, but according to Shelter Chief Executive, Robb Campbell, certain things need to be ascertained.
‘Despite the increase in the number of people renting, the long term aspiration for many remains to be a homeowner. While more rented housing could help ease pressure on this over-heated market, it’s vital that this does not come at the expense of building affordable homes for people across the country already struggling to get on the property ladder in their local area. Young people who are working hard and saving towards a secure and affordable home need to know that the government is on their side.’
Robert Ellice Buying at the right price absolutely depends on being able to identify the true value of the property, and in order to be able to do that, you need to know your own market inside out. You need to understand where other people’s valuations come from and to be able to challenge those figures where necessary. Building a portfolio is not something you can do overnight, and if you really want to maximise the profitability of the properties you own or control, that takes time. Learning how to source, negotiate, acquire, refurbish, tenant and manage those properties to get the best return on your investment takes years of practice and experience. This is where the best advice from those in the business counts. Remember a good estate agent or property professional has had years of experience and has seen most things before. Use this knowledge and take advantage of strong professional advice. What lies ahead for the future of your investment is dependent on you and the decisions you make, alongside the professional advice you seek and how you follow the market. Remember, you make the rules.
Clarke Hillyer 35 The Broadway Woodford Green Essex IG8 0HQ
Speculation of a property crash in the UK has consistently been in the news for quite some time now, but we believe that the property market will remain solid. It is clear, the supply of property is insufficient to meet demands. When there is a decrease in the asking price or prices soften, there is always a group of ready buyers that are willing to pick up bargains.

Each month we catch up with mr Lake from the LB Group and ask him to answer your business related questions.
At a recent board meeting it was discussed if our company qualified for research and development tax relief. What sort of businesses qualify and how easy is it to claim this relief. Sebastian Canard, Chingford
Whilst the rule on claiming for this relief have not changed, the practical implementation of the rules has been refined by HM Revenue and Customs, which means that more and more companies are claiming successfully. Indeed the Government are keen to encourage businesses to spend on projects that push technology forward. Who can claim Research and Development (R&D) tax relief? Any limited company undertaking projects which meet the HMRC guidelines. In order for a project to qualify for R&D tax relief it must be seeking a technological advance via the resolution of technological uncertainty. In simple terms any projects which require a ‘trial and error’ approach, due to information regarding how to achieve the projects goals not being publicly available. Examples of R&D expenditure are: software development, designing new products, creating new chemical formulas, making goods using new materials and enhancing existing products or technology.
