emember, remember, the whole of November. As for me it is the very best of months. With its chilly temperatures, dreary weather and fondness for precipitation, the penultimate month of the year might seem an odd choice to champion. So why do I love it so? Well, it is no doubt in some part because my birthday falls within its 30 days, but there are a myriad of other things to love about the 11th month. Such as the fashion - If the calendar were your wardrobe, then November would certainly be the coat. In ‘Baby, It’s Getting Cold Outside’ we run down this winter’s most desirable coats. And because it’s not just ladies who need wrap up warm, we have dedicated our men’s trends page to all things woolly, with a selection of stylish-as-theyare-snugly knitwear. November, of course is also home to fireworks night, check out the various local events happening on the 5th and throughout the rest of the month, with our ‘What’s On Guide.’ However, if even the thought of candyfloss and bonfires is not enough to convince you of November’s charms then we also have plenty of ways for you to get away this month. From Provence to Mexico, in ‘Making The Most Of It...’ we pick the best breaks to make the most of the last of your annual leave. When combined with a weekend, you would be surprised just how far a couple of days of holiday will get you.

NOUvO’S FReDeRIcK FORSTeR wINS cHeF OF THe YeAR 2011 Buckhurst Hill’s Nouvo’s Head Chef Frederick Forster has been named Chef of the Year 2011. The chef takes home this prestigious accolade following an intense two hour cook off between eight finalists at the Restaurant Show held at Earls Court. His winning dishes included sauté scallops with crab ‘Biegnet’ and roasted breast of duck with braised thigh flavoured with smoked bacon. Despite this amazing achievement the spectacularly talented chef remains charmingly modest, saying ‘my reputation is as good as the last plate to leave my kitchen’. I guess that means we will have to test a couple of those plates ourselves. www.nuovorestaurant.co.uk T: 020 8504 2299

pIzzA BAR KITcHeN OpeNS ON wANSTeAD HIgH ROAD The iN team got to indulge in our favourite Italian treat at the opening of Wanstead’s new Pizza Bar Kitchen. As you might expect from the name, the focus of the menu at the contemporary lounge restaurant is pizza. Delicious, handmade, authentic Italian ones, though some scrumptious salads and tempting burgers also make an appearance. To wash down your dinner or lunch Pizza Bar Kitchen also offers a range of cocktails and specialty beers. Over one of these we spoke to general manager Kieran Brennan ‘We’re all really excited about showing off our gorgeous new look,’ he told us ‘Everyone, from our talented chefs to dedicated bar staff, is ready to bring Italy to the East End.’ www.pizzakitchenbars.co.uk T: 020 8989 0552

in LANA DEL RAY – Singer, internet sensation and owner of perhaps the most coveted lips around, we’ve had Lana’s haunting and folksy ‘Video Games’ on repeat since we first heard it at Christopher Kane’s catwalk show.
HOME AS ABROAD
“
Welcome to iN’s society column, ‘Girl About Town’ where socialite Caroline Polledri gives her own hilarious take on being out and about in Essex and beyond.
Many of you office folks will know that at this time of year, you start to frugally try and ration the last few days left of your entitled holiday desperately trying to save a few days in order to scatter them across the festive period. The last thing you want to do is to face coming into a half empty office on New Year’s Eve. What an anti climax!
GOOD MANNERS – On the tube, that is. London Transport staff are to receive training from John Lewis staff on empathy and customer service. But the question is - will they be able to advise us on which Smeg fridge is for us?
And just as you’re moaning about using most of your days up and how you wish you’d never wasted one on ‘paintball’, some smug little weasel in Accounts pipes up with ‘Oh I have sooo much annual leave left, I may have to carry them over into next year’. Leaving you with the need to strike them very precisely with a metal ruler, if for no other reason than they actually used the phrase - ‘annual leave’.
YEO VALLEY’S BOY BAND – Organic dairy company and producers of scrumptious breakfast accompanying yogurts Yeo Valley have entered into the pop music biz with the formation of their custom made boy band ‘The Churned’ – a collection of sexy farmers singing about, well - farming. What’s not to love?
For those of you who do have the odd day to spare or can suddenly feel signs of ‘that bug that’s been going around lately’ (wink, wink) coming on, then why not arrange a little sight seeing? And the beauty is you can do it somewhere that doesn’t require much travel or a suitcase. The kind of destination that if you are midway into your journey and suddenly realise that you’ve left the iron on – it wouldn’t be the end of the world if you had to turn back home again. The magical (and oh so convenient) place I am harping on about is London Town, the big smoke, the largest city in the Britain we call Great - the Queen’s backyard. Basically take a tour of your own city. Give yourself just one day this month to pose as a proper tourist, book all touristy things you can think of - a ride in an open top bus, a visit to the Tower of London, lunch at an Aberdeen Steak House, followed by a go (I refuse to call it a ‘trip’) on the London Eye! Ok, so you’ve walked past them countless times but I bet you’ve never actually done any of them. How many of you have got one of those ‘me with a beefeater’ photos, where you’re not in your primary school uniform? You just don’t do you, when you know you can do it any time. To make your ‘London Day’ even more fun, you could dress up for the experience. You could even adopt an accent for the occasion; no-one will question it, not with your bum bag as back up. So that’s what I’m going to be doing this month and I suggest you do the same – I’ll send you a post card from my visit. So what if I get home before it arrives – that’s not the point!
out BLACKBERRY – A server problem left BlackBerry users without Internet, email and messenger capabilities twice in 24 hours. Furious customers took to Twitter to express their outrage. Although obviously, not on their BlackBerrys. Could this be a case of Blackberry crumble?
BEYONCÉ BUMP DOUBTERS – The bizarre speculation about whether or not the diva is in fact sporting a faux baby bump in order to fake her gestational status has got to be the most mental celebrity conspiracies to make it into the mainstream. What’s next – Myleene Klass stealing the Pope’s loo roll? Oh wait...
DESIGNER VE-JAY-JAYS – Controversy over the practice hasn’t prevented the demand for cosmetic gynaecology reaching its highest level ever, as an unsettling report shows. With the procedures fast becoming some of the highest earning treatments in the US, one doctor has been reported suggesting customers get ‘get (a) double-D labia to go with those double-D implants’.

Sweden
1 DAY...
Do
TAKE A HUSKY TOUR ‘After a long day of mushing the tour guide was feeling a little husky...’ Explore the beauty of the Lapland wilderness by one of the cutest modes of transport known to man. Whether you opt to be a passenger or even try your hands at the reins yourself, dog sledging has got to be the must ‘do’ of any Artic escape. You would be barking not to.
Eat RUDOLF...
Reindeer, which perhaps unsurprisingly tastes like venison, is a Swedish delicacy and well worth sampling. However if you can’t quite bring yourself to tuck into this more exotic form of Donner meat, there are plenty of other Artic specialities including Artic Char and Grouse. Vegetarians be forewarned - flesh free meals can be rather thin on the ground on the tundra.
PLAY IT COOL AT SWEDEN’S ICEHOTEL Average room temperatures that start with a minus sign would usually be a turn off for even the most intrepid of travellers, but at Sweden’s Iconic ICEHOTEL the chill is half the thrill. With everything from the polar bear bedposts to the spectacular chandeliers carved from ice and snow, it is no wonder that the ICEHOTEL is one of the most surreal and beautiful places on earth to spend the night. With a direct flight time of 3h30m and the classic break consisting of three night in the Swedish winter wonderland this has got to be the most magnificent ways of making that final day of holiday count.
Facts... •
• • • • •
The ICEHOTEL is rebuilt and redesigned every year, ensuring no two seasons are the same. Direct flights to Kiruna, the ICEHOTEL’s nearest airport take around 3hrs 30mins from Heathrow. The currency in Sweden is the Swedish Krona. At time of print the exchange rate was 10.48SEK to 1GBP. Temperatures within the hotel are kept around -5°C to -8°C; outside temperatures can drop to around -37°C. Keep your eyes on the sky, as this winter gives you the best chance of catching Aurora Borealis - aka the Northern Lights - as the snowy months mark the climax of the 11-year solar cycle. On arrival at the ICEHOTEL you will be given special clothing for use during your stay but be sure to bring your own warm clothing to wear underneath. And leave the Louboutins at home, as flat shoes with a good grip are the must have accessory at the ICEHOTEL.

Drink AT THE ICEBAR
Relax on one of the bar’s reindeer pelt covered ice seats and chill out (pardon the pun) watching the expert mixologists knock up some gloriously colourful beverages behind the solid ice bar. Cocktails here are not so much served over ice, as within it, with the bars famous chucky ice glasses acting as both vessel and cooler. Vodka is Sweden’s tipple of choice, however if you fancy something to warm the cockles the bar also does a mean hot chocolate. Just don’t leave your mug on any of the furniture.
Stay
ICEHOTEL The classic three night winter break includes one night in a snow room and two in heated accommodation. You can upgrade your stay to one of the individually themed Art Suites for the full ‘white witch’ experience. The quickest way to get to there is to book with Discover The World, who offer the UK's only direct flight from Heathrow to Kiruna, which is just 20 minutes from the ICEHOTEL. Discover The World have an in-depth knowledge of Lapland and have been organising holidays to the ICEHOTEL every year since it was first built in 1992. www.discover-the-world.co.uk

GO TRUFFLE HUNTING Join expert truffier Eric Jaumund at his forest home and get your hands dirty in search of the woodland’s most famous and expensive wild crop. Beyond the thrill of the hunt, Provence is perhaps is at its most beautiful in November when the chestnut trees change colour and truffling can be one of the most exciting ways to enjoy the region’s enchanting countryside.
Eat
RUSTIC FRENCH It is very difficult to eat badly in Provence as the locals just won’t stand for lack lustre cookery. Most villages have weekly markets, so do your research beforehand and swing by one of these for amazing cheese, scrumptious bread and other rustic treats. Also don’t forget to sample your finds with a truffle speciality or two.
TRUFFLE HUNTING IN PROVENCE One of the most popular holiday destinations in the South of France, Provence is famed for both its picturesque countryside and fabulous food. November is the perfect month to make a foodie pilgrimage, as it marks the start of the region’s truffle season. Nicknamed ‘black diamonds’ truffles are probably the most highly prized of funguses on earth, indeed Alexandre Dumas claimed that eating truffles put one in touch with the divine. And what better way to get to grips with this most luxurious and pungent ingredient than to hunt out your very own?

The Hotel Crillon Le Brave’s Truffle and Wine weekends run on the 10th13th and 24th-27th November. The weekend included truffle hunting with Eric Jaumund, wine tasting at a Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate, breakfast and dinner including a dedicated truffle speciality dinner, truffle cooking demonstration with the hotel’s chef and a trip to Provence’s antiques capital Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Provence’s daytime temperatures in November average around 14°C; though it can be surprisingly balmy, warm clothing is recommended. Provence is best explored by car. Particularly if that car happens to be a vintage Citroën 2CV. Several companies offer rentals of classic French automobiles, so do your research before departing. Crillon le Brave is reachable by air from Avignon and Marseille airport and by Eurostar to Avignon.
Drink
SAMPLE VINTAGES AT A VINEYARD Educate your palate in the difference between Grenache and Shiraz and maybe find a new favourite at one of the region’s legendary Châteauneuf-duPape estates.

HOTEL CRILLON LE BRAVE Made up of a collection of centaury old picturesque stone buildings nestled in the heart of a tiny hilltop village, Hotel Crillon le Brave combines both rustic charm and airy luxury to make the perfect Provence hide away. And with its stone vaulted dining room serving high quality, locallysourced ingredients, cooked simply but brilliantly, it is a foodie’s dream too. www.crillonlebrave.com in MAGAZINE 17
Marrakech
3 DAYS...
Do
BARTER AT A TRADITIONAL SOUK Souks are covered markets which sell everything from spices to carpets. Bargaining is a big part of the Souk experience, so come ready to barter. When entering a stall you may well be offered a cup of mint tea by the stall-holder. Be sure to accept as a refusal can be seen as rude, at a Souk everything is negotiable except the pleasantries. Morocco has an expert tanning industry, making it the ideal place to pick up a unique and beautiful alternative to this season’s ‘it’ bag.
Eat
TRADITIONAL MOROCCAN AT PEPENERO Italian and Moroccan might not seem the most immediately obvious of culinary bedfellows but this Marrakech hidden gem makes it work. And when we say hidden, we mean hidden. The Pepenero however more than makes up for its being difficult to find with fantastic food, beautiful decor and fantastic waiting staff – who should you get lost on the way to dinner will more than happily direct you by phone to the front door. www.pepenero-marrakech.com.
WANDER THE MARKETS IN MARRAKECH Morocco’s third largest city is just a short hop away on one of the myriad of budget airlines that fly to the city’s airport and with November days averaging 23°C Marrakech is the ideal destination for some winter city sun. The distance may not be all that much, but culturally Marrakech is a million miles away from the certainties of a European short break. Instead you will find a labyrinthine ancient city filled with the exotic colours, smells and sounds, where sensory overload is more of a certainty than a risk. From sun drenched pools to snake charmers, Marrakech will certainly allow you to see off your final days of annual leave in splendour.
Facts... • •

Marrakech is the third largest city in Morocco after Casablanca and Rabat. Marrakech has an international airport with direct scheduled flights coming in from London and other British cities. Easyjet, BMI, Thomson Airways, British Airways and Ryanair all fly to Marrakech. The currency is Moroccan Dirhams. At time of print the exchange rate was 12.85MD to 1GBP. Average flight time from London the Marrakech 3h30m Though warm during the day, the temperature drops to around 10°C at night in the autumn. FRESH ORANGE JUICE AT DJEMAA EL-FNA The Old City’s market place Djemaa el-Fna is the beating heart of Marrakech. LAGUNA CHANKANAAB If you manage to tire of the powdery white beachfront and 240 square hectares of mangrove forest and jungle, then we recommend travelling to Laguna Chankanaab, just a short ferry ride to the island of Cozumel. It features a beautiful marine park and botanical gardens, as well as a beach and a dolphin discovery centre. It is also situated near the Paraíso and Chankanaab coral reefs, which provide splendid diving.
Eat
CASA DEL LAGO
Overlooking a vast lagoon, one would expect it difficult for the food to outshine the views from the Casa Del Lago. But rest assured the chef somehow manages it. If you can drag your eyes from the lagoon for five minutes, you’ll find the menu is inspired by local Yucatan flavours and contains a number of traditional Mexican dishes, as well as contemporary European cuisine. Dining on the outside terrace is a must.
RELAX ON THE BEACHES OF THE RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO If you’ve got a fair amount of holiday and don’t mind a 9-hour flight then the Riviera Maya is the ideal holiday destination for the winter sun worshipper. Located in Mexico and on the edge of a stunning Caribbean coastline, the Riviera Maya boasts perfect white sandy beaches and ancient Mayan ruins, as well as lush jungle, home to some of the world’s most endangered species. November signifies the start of the dry season, with temperatures averaging at around 25°c, and with the kids back to school, you might be able to bag a bargain on accommodation.
Facts... •
• • • • •
The Riviera Maya is approximately 30 minutes drive from Cancun International Airport. Although the dry season is from November to May, there is a period in which northerly winds rule the coastline, usually from January to February. The Riviera Maya is home to the second largest coral reef in the world – the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. The currency is the Mexican Peso. At time of print the exchange rate was 20.98MXP to 1GBP. Average flight time from London to Calcun International Airport: 9h. On average, the Riviera Maya expects only 9mm of rainfall throughout November.
Drink
TEqUILA AT AGAVE AZUL No visit to Mexico is complete without a sample of the nation’s finest beverage – tequila. The Agave Azul bar is billed as a tequila library, fronted by resident tequila experts. Visitors can sample a tequila menu unrivalled by any other, ensuring that this library is far more interesting than the traditional kind.

IT’S A MAN THINg
MOveMBeR HAWKSMOOR SEVEN DIALS ne of the best moments of the most recent series of Mad Men has got to be when Don and stereotypically reserved Englishman, Lane, following a considerable amount of whisky end up in a steakhouse. Upon the arrival of the steaks at the table Lane proceeds to pick up the lump of ungulate and slaps it on his trousers, yelling ‘I've got a big Texas belt buckle, yeah!’ What marks this seemingly inconsequential piece of beef based accessorizing out as memorable, is not just that it is the first time you see Lane relax that upper lip a bit, but also the disconcerting realization that the steak in question looks so spectacularly good, you would give your collector’s edition signed boxset to have it for dinner. Even after its trouser pressing. And that is the sort of steak you get at Hawksmoor. A carnivores dream, Hawksmoor is a temple to the glories of British beef. The myriad of cuts to be found on the steakhouse’s menu all come from excellent, Yorkshire-based butcher Ginger Pig. And alongside the expected Rump and Sirloin you will also find the more specialty Porterhouse and Chateaubrian. Each of which is perfectly aged and cooked with the sort of love that makes you wonder if the chef had known this particular cow personally, and maybe even raised it as his own. Starters focus of British seafood, with Dorset rock oysters and blue lobster all finding their rightful home. The bar’s surprisingly good cocktails are the perfect thing to wash arguably the best steaks in London down with. And amongst all the animal protein, don’t forget to save some room for Hawksmoor’s legendary beef dripping chips.

JOHN ROlFe
Age: 57 Height: 5ft 7’’ weight: 11st 8lbs Debut Fight hen Gary McGrath’s nephew Alex Field was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour, his friend John Rolfe desperately wanted to help out. So he organised a charity boxing event to raise funds for Alex’s crucial brain surgery. There was only one problem – he had nobody to fight. So he took his mate Steve Bailey down to the Warren Wood pub in Buckhurst Hill and after several large Bacardis he convinced him be his opponent. Bring on the Rocky training montage. Sadly, Alex passed away before the match could go ahead, so John has selected another worthy cause – that of Grace Windram, who met Alex through the children’s charity The Tree of Hope. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy in 2008, she is unable to walk or crawl, and must rely on a wheelchair to move around. Her parents are hoping that the money raised by the charity boxing match will help pay for life-changing surgery which could eventually allow her to walk with the aid of crutches.
Age: 48 Height: 5ft 7’’ weight: 13st 7lbs 4th charity Fight Now months into their training routines, Steve and John are determined to do her justice. Training is going well. Steve has already sustained a broken nose and a cracked rib, which shows that he’s working hard at least. He has been dividing his five times a week training sessions between Alan Mortlock’s Gym and RJ’s Gym, under the watchful eye of experienced boxer and manager Alan Mortlock. Not bad, considering John chose Steve as an opponent because he thought he’d be an ‘easy target.’ But boxing is something that Steve has always wanted to do, so his determination is hardly surprising. Maybe that’s why John isn’t getting complacent. He’s also sparring five times a week, with the help of former pro Dominic Negus and Ian Wilson of Spartan Gym. The event to be held at The Prince Regent, Chigwell on 26th November promises to be a fantastic night of boxing entertainment, with several other fights being organised by Noel Tierney of Club KO in Walthamstow. Even if he might not win the match, John is certainly going
all out to raise cash for Grace, as the evening also includes a charity auction of boxing memorabilia, as well as a raffle. Although table seats are already sold out, you can still snap up a balcony ticket on the night for £20 – money that goes straight into Grace’s operation fund. Surely a good enough reason already, but you’ll also get to experience an event that’s more than capable of punching above its weight. John and Steve would like to thank several people for helping them with their training programmes. Sean and Adam Mortlock for their motivation, as well as Chris Mac of Virgin Active, along with Rod and Terry ‘The Tan’ of RJ’s Gym. In addition, Steve would like to thank his friend Bill Mahoney for his support, and Paul Isaacs of Queen’s Dental Practice for making his gum shield. Perfect fit, apparently! Also promises to be a perfect fight.

Just Married Sallie & Andy Smith When happy couple Sallie and Andy viewed Gaynes Park for their wedding venue, they were so impressed that they cancelled their other viewings. We discussed vintage, venue and romantic surprises with the newly-weds. How did you two first met? Sallie: We met eight years ago through mutual friends. Andy was always a flirt and I felt lucky to just be one of his string of girls. When he moved to Ireland with his family we both just decided to move on. But in the end we missed each other so much that he moved back after just ten months.
Tell us about the proposal – how did it happen? Sallie: Andy proposed on Valentine’s. He suggested he wanted to take me out to dinner for Valentine’s Day; I laughed and said I didn't want to sit in a cheesy restaurant with lots of other couples. Disappointed he suggested he cook for me. I laughed again and suggested that he just get a Marks and Spencer’s meal as it would be less hassle. He gave up, bought the meal deal and proposed after we ate our readymade dessert. I cried and immediately said yes.
We admire Andy’s perseverance! So that is the proposal, now tell us about the big day - Did you have a special theme? Sallie: Traditional with a touch of vintage. I hung lots of acrylic crystals from the trees by the Orangery, which twinkled in the sun and we dotted small glass lanterns around the Mill Barn.
Were there any surprises on the day? Sallie: Andy was planning on driving himself to the venue with his best man and ushers. He loves campervans so I booked him one to turn up on the morning, decked out with ribbons, ready to take him to the venue, as a surprise. Andy: I gave Sallie a Links of London bracelet to wear on our special day as her ‘something new’.
We hear the honeymoon was a bit of a surprise … Sallie: We decided we couldn’t afford to go on honeymoon this year and were planning to do something at a later stage. Some close friends and the bridesmaids and groomsman decided to club together and paid for us to spend a week in a luxury 5* apartment in a beautiful part of Tenerife. Other guests were in on the surprise and gave us Euros to spend on the holiday. It was the perfect end to our perfect wedding celebrations.
What a wonderful way to end the day. Before you go, have you got any advice for other couples? Sallie: For keeping to a budget make as much as you can yourself. It makes it more personal; remember the bits that people remember about your day aren’t always the most expensive. Bride’s Dress: New Beginnings - www.newbeginningslondon.co.uk. pOcKeT ids are expert at levering money out of mum and dad with little regard for how or where that money came from. They are manipulative – a flutter of the eyelashes to dad or an adoring smile to mum and they’ve bagged the vital twenty quid they want. And, they’ll expect that any change is theirs too. T-mobile recently carried out a survey amongst 13 to 15-year-olds to test their knowledge of the price of things. Typically the youngsters knew the prices of the latest smart phones on the market, but were less aware of the price of texts. Possibly because their parents paid the bill? The kids surveyed could quote the price of trainers and iPads, but were unsure of the cost of daily items such as you would find in the supermarket. Living in one of the capitals of consumerism as we do, these findings are not so surprising, after all, the cost of carrots is boring to kids. However, what they are too young to realise is that the only boring thing about money is not having enough of it.
But where do kids learn the vital life skill of money management? Firstly by observation, just like any other skill we learn growing up. Which is great if mum and dad are on top of things. However typically as parents our own finances are often not what we’d like them to be, particularly in the current climate. Or, often our household economics are so complex that how we handle our money doesn’t mean much to a child. The result is that kids just don’t seem to get that every product or service you can imagine requires payment of some kind. Modern day kids are though under tremendous pressure – to get a job, to contribute to society and also to do well at school and aspire to university. Consequently, like many parents we are guilty of feeling the desire to protect our kids for as long as we possibly can from the harshness of the rat-race we live in. This we Words by Sue Lovett
have to balance with the need to give them some appreciation for the things they buy, perhaps by giving them pocket money and encouraging them to use their own money when they buy things. Leading economists have gathered evidence showing that the weaker the maths skills of the citizens of a country, the more indebted its citizens are and its economy. In the league table drawn up from the findings Greece and Portugal are near the bottom, the UK is 19th and Ireland 20th. Not surprisingly Switzerland and Germany are near the top.
earlier this year more than 120 Mps launched a campaign to make financial education compulsory in schools. Members of the new all-party parliamentary group on financial education for young people said it was vital that students were taught about debt. New university tuition fees kick in next year. Fees will triple to in most cases, £9000 per year. Accommodation costs are extra. With the average degree course lasting three, sometimes four years, that’s a hefty debt for a twenty-two-year-old to carry. Surely it is more vital now than ever for our children to be taught to understand how finance works.
The Facts of life we’re not talking about the birds and the bees here, but another message that can be equally difficult to explain to our young – the pounds and the pennies. Any responsible parent will want to teach their kids the financial facts of life, because if there’s one thing every one of us will have learnt from experience and that is that money talks and it’s amazing how quickly it can say ‘goodbye.’
our youth into debt, but never about debt. we simply can’t let students take this debt out unless they know how it works.’ Mr Lewis revealed that he had met school children who believed they would not have to pay for items bought on a store credit card. He said ‘I asked a group of 15-year-olds how old they would be when they paid off a credit card bill of £3000 at 17.9 per cent if they made the minimum payments. Some said 20, some said 30, but the answer is 60-years-old.’ He added ‘Kids are not stupid, but we are a financially illiterate country and are bad about talking about money.’ Perhaps then it’s time to put our money where our mouth is and adequately prepare those who will be holding the purse strings of our future.
Money saving expert and creator of the website moneysavingsexpert.com Martin Lewis said:

MILLIGAN'S MEANING OF LIFE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF SORTS SPIKE MILLIGAN Considering his absurd sense of humour, it’s appropriate that Milligan has continued to publish books from beyond the grave. This autobiography has been edited by his manager Norma Farnes, from a variety of sources including his television scripts, sketches and personal letters. Tragic and hilarious in equal measure, his time as a ‘hero with cowards legs’ in the army is particularly prominent. For those who love Milligan there is plenty of previously unseen material, while those new to him will appreciate the story behind his writing.

music EVERY KINGDOM BEN HOWARD
If it were practical to listen to your iPod while surfing on the crest of a wave off the coast of Cornwall, then this is the album you’d want to listen to. A keen surfer himself, Howard has an ear for a good melody, and Every Kingdom contains a number of songs that you’ll find yourself singing aloud to during the chorus. The sound is a pop-folk blend, making use of quick guitar strings and relaxed percussion. If the strong song writing isn’t enough, that husky voice is guaranteed to have you googling the phrase ‘waterproof MP3 player.’

eat ZEN CHINA SOUTHBANK Situated on the South Bank, this is Chinese cuisine with serious style. The restaurant boasts views over London’s most famous landmarks, including Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye. The interior resembles the drawing room of a country house, making further use of the juxtaposition between Chinese food and British atmosphere. All this before you get to the food. Zen China specialises in Imperial Beijing cuisine and prices for the quality are excellent. The varied menu is prepared using only fresh ingredients, and the Peking duck is particularly excellent, carved with great ceremony by the chef at your table. Overall, a quality dining experience. County Hall, Riverside Building, Westminster Bridge Road, London SE1 7PB T. 020 7261 1196 www.zenchina.co.uk
JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN DIRECTED BY OLIVER PARKER Rowan Atkinson reprises his role as the hapless spy in this sequel to the original James Bond parody. Admittedly, the plot is hardly ‘Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy,’ but the film is easy to watch thanks largely to Atkinson’s efforts, and it certainly fits the bill for family fun. Despite the fairly predictable humour, there are a few laugh-out-loud moments during the film’s less flashy scenes, when Atkinson is allowed to bounce off his co-stars and demonstrate that bumbling social incompetence that he is undisputedly king of. in MAGAZINE 51

in Land Rover doesn’t launch new models very often and this - the Evoque - is meant to appeal to people who don’t want a full-size Range Rover (and the running costs), but do want to tap into the brand’s core of cool and classy durability. The looks have Range Rover written all over them, but without being too traditional. There’s the same slab-faced front end, imposing grille, pronounced wheel arches and raked rear. The genes are obvious. But from there on in, it’s all change. The Evoque’s headlights frown menacingly over the large front bumper, the windscreen sweeps back in a very un-Range Rover manner, and glass space is comparatively minimal, especially in coupe form. Meanwhile, the rear has the usual twin exhaust pipes, but they fit flush into a rear diffuser and look appropriately ‘concept.’
Range RoveR’s evoque intRoduces the bRand to a new geneRation.
‘
’m really sorry, but we can’t insure you’ was the message I was greeted with when I arrived at Lookers’ plush Bishop Stortford showroom. But then who could blame them? Arriving in a battle scared Volvo, with a face that masks my years too well and a licence laden with points that masks my nature not well enough - I’m not the ideal candidate to drive your shiny new Range Rover, but thankfully, and with a bit of persuasion, I did.
56 in MAGAZINE
Inside, it’s the same story. The (almost as) commanding driving position being the most obvious link to a traditional Range Rover, but where big brother’s interior is an imposing mass of fine materials, the Evoque’s is far less angular. It’s sportier in feel. Getting in (and this is best done at night) you’re treated to Evoque apparitions projected below both wing mirrors, and the kickplate glows blue with the words ‘Range Rover.’ The interior lighting can be adjusted to different shades and map lights are operated by sweeping your finger across the lenses, doing so reveals a spacious interior fittingly kitted-out with leather and polished metal. The boot, although the smallest in the range, will happily accommodate either a Labrador or a pack Chihuahuas, and their requisite handbags - depending on your lifestyle.
The only real annoyances, inside, are seats (in this 3-door Coupe) which are slow to allow rear-seat access and sat-nav that could be more intuitive. These aside, it’s all extremely well executed and puts the ambience of cars costing twice the Evoque’s £42k, to shame. The 4wd Si4 Dynamic Coupe, which is the sporty variant, with its 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine (you can read about the diesel in the following article), produces 240bhp and 251Ib ft of torque, will return 30mpg and allows for a 135mph top speed and 0-60mph in 7.1 seconds. Surprisingly for a 4-pot, it even sounds good doing it. Going fast in a straight line has never been a major challenge, though - big car just equals bigger engine. But in the corners? That’s where the Evoque marks itself out, helped by Adaptive Dynamics and MagnaRide. Switched to ‘Dynamic’ mode the Evoque’s body control is the equal of the prodigious grip generated by 20’ wheels, it can be thrown into corners with confidence, helped also by weighty and comparatively communicative steering and a smooth, if stiff, ride. And, when you’re not in the mood, you can switch back to the cosseting ride of the normal settings. The six-speed auto, while not the absolute best in the business holds on to gears in sport mode, and keeps things refined when not. Offroading is not the Evoque’s primary role in life, but we’ve taken one across some slippery and heavily rutted tracks in the Scottish Borders, and found it up to the task, so we’ll assume it can cope with the snow-dusted roads of the South’s winter. Road-biased tyres and a lack of ride height would limit it for much else. Offroad ability aside the Evoque has all the character of a traditional Range Rover, but handles better on the road and manages to ooze a sense of cool menace that is absent from the larger models. After the helpful staff at Lookers had jumpstarted my ‘trusty’ Volvo after a minor side-lights-left-on-forthree-days oversight, I handed back the keys to Evoque convinced it is the best in class and a fine addition to the line-up.
the Five-dooR evoque diesel the Family evoque, iF you Feel you must… The 3-door petrol Evoque may be the prettiest and fastest in the range, but it is not expected to be the best seller. Unsurprisingly, that honour falls to the more practical and fuel efficient 5-door diesel. Although the extra doors take something of the concept look away from the Evoque, they do make for a more sensible family car. Accommodating your nearest and dearest with ease. The 5-door Evoque’s rear legroom is impressive, even with tall people in the front. And boot space is fair, too. Although we’d have reservations about letting children anywhere near the lovely cabin. It’s that lovely… Out on the road, the diesel’s characteristics suit the job of lugging the relatively heavy Evoque down the road, with plenty of low-down torque (310 lb ft) it doesn’t need to be revved as hard as the petrol to give its best, and riding the torque wave it can reach 60mph 9.5 seconds and go on to a 124mph top speed. We tried both the manual and the auto’ box and, although the manual was direct and precise, second gear could find the Evoque caught off boost, certainly we would opt for the auto’ which seems to better suit the car. Of course the best part of the diesel is its fuel economy. With the 2.2 litre 190bhp version will be capable of around 50mpg, say Land Rover. The prestige model we tested did without the dynamic suspension settings of next door’s road test, but it’s still a tidy handler with an excellent ride. Saying that, we did find the diesel’s steering was slightly dulled. A result, we think, of the heavier engine. So, the five-door diesel’s not quite as pretty as the three-door petrol, but it is bigger inside, more practical and more economical. Why you would want to expose such a beautiful machine to a family? We do not know... But if you really must, it comes highly recommend.

This month photographer Garry Castle gave iN Magazine an exclusive window on to the lavish world of yacht racing, the heart racing subject matter for his latest trio of limited edition books.
uring the month of September hundreds of the world’s most beautiful and skilfully crewed yachts migrate from all four corners of the globe to Monaco harbour for the start of one of the most spectacular oceanic sporting events of the year, the Régates Royales.
Both these remarkable boats were originally built in Fife, Scotland over a centaury ago. Sadly at some point over those hundred years both vessels fell into disrepair, with the Mariquita almost being lost to the elements. Following a painstaking program of restoration both boats are now back to their former glory and can be found racing all over the world.
And as the photographer for Yacht Club de Monaco I was there to capture all the action from the race. The weather gods were smiling for the first day of the competition, with the winds up and the Monaco sun beating down; conditions were perfect for an exciting day on the waves. I love this race and I feel very fortunate to be involved is such a legendary and prestigious event.
The next leg of the race sees the yachts travel from Cannes to Saint Tropez. As we waved goodbye to the glamour of Cannes, the wind struck up granting us and our shore gathered audience of onlookers a dramatic departure. As the sails filled and the yachts gathered knots, we sped towards the horizon and the celebrations in Saint Tropez.
Which is not to say getting ‘the shot’ whilst on the water is without its difficulties. We tailed the yachts in a fully restored classic Riva Aquarama. The gloriously stylish Italian speedboats were made famous in the 1960’s when virtually all the global glitterati where photographed on a deck of one or other of these ‘Ferrari’s of the boat world.’ We put the Riva through its sleek paces chasing down the yachts and capturing all the excitement as they raced towards Cannes. Words by Garry Castle
Even amongst the world’s most beautiful ocean going craft it is impossible not to play favourites. One of the most noteworthy yachts we captured making headway towards the South of France was the Tuiga. A restored J Class, the Tuiga is the flagship for the Yacht Club de Monaco. The spectacular vessel was presented to the club by none other than Prince Albert of Monaco, head of the House of Gramaldi, and as a member of the club I am privileged to have access to sail her. Another one of my favourites from the glamorous flotilla must be the Mariquita, which is captained by my friend Jim Thom. He races the Mariquita all over the globe, and both his speed and skill are legendary.
For your very own taste of the oceanbound opulence of the Cote de Azure Garry Castle’s spectacular photography is available in the form of three limited edition books TUIGA, MARIQUITA and his joint venture with French Photographer Patrick Gauthey IN THE LIGHT OF THE REGATTA.

Through their contacts in the Venture Capital market, LB Corporate Finance came up with over £2 million of funding whereas our bank had offered no more than £1.5 million. This gave me options that I did not believe I would have. Without LB Corporate Finance we would have been totally unaware of this type of funding.

Profile 'I never ever thought I would end up in boxing and having my own gym, I just didn’t see it coming.'
IN MAgAzINe TAlKS gYM OpeNINgS, MODeRNIzINg BOxINg AND wORlD cHAMpS wITH MIcHAel AMOO-BeDIAKO. 'I never ever thought I would end up in boxing and having my own gym, I just didn’t see it coming.' Sitting in the reception of his newly opened PRO SW Gym, which amongst its specially imported resistance machines and spinning bikes, boasts a full size boxing ring, this is not what you would expect to hear from owner and boxing manager Michael Amoo-Bediako. Dressed in all white sports clothes, Michael is much more accommodating and friendly than the stereotypes of his profession would have you believe. But this intimating mythos that surrounds the fighter's sport is in part what has driven Michael to set up PRO SW Gym. 'Boxing is one of the few sports that is still in the dark ages,' Michael tells me, 'I want to modernize boxing, make it more accessible.' If shaking off the tired image of spit stained floors and lumpy punch bags hung from the eves of warehouses in the wrong end of town is what Michael had in mind that is certainly what PRO SW Gym has done. 'You look at premiership footballers and some other professional athletes and the pampering they get,' Michael explains, 'and they are not putting their lives on the line when they compete like boxers do.' I ask Michael, as an insider in the sport, if he has a theory as to why boxing or more specifically boxers are treated so differently. 'Well it’s a working man’s sport for one,' he tells me, 'and it's the fighters sport. It appeals to fighters, and not just for the ring, boxing is a dog eat dog world, whether you’re a promoter, manager, trainer or a fighter. But what people don't realize is a lot of these young boxers are fighting for their way out.' 66 in MAGAZINE
Lending a helping hand to local youths who want to don the gloves is clearly something Michael is passionate about.
‘Some people just need a little guidance, someone from the same background to help them make something of themselves.' In fact it was through helping out a local amateur boxer that Michael first fell into the sport. 'I had a car firm at the time, but found something was missing. I suppose I was looking for excitement,' Michael tells me, 'it was around this time that Philip Bowes came to me asking for work. Knowing that he was an amateur boxer, I said 'I don’t have a job for you, but tell me when your next fight is and if you’re any good I will be your sponsor.'' And that, as they say, was that. At the height of his managerial career Michael was representing five professional boxers, but with the demands of his new gym that number has now dropped down to two.
'I wanted to give PRO SW Gym the right attention,' Michael indicates the light filled chic fitness centre, 'every element is meticulously planned.' On my tour of the gym Michael points out the groundwork room telling me of his expansion plans. It seems representative of Michael's personality that only two weeks after opening he is already planning what’s next. 'Ever bigger, ever better' could very well be his personal mantra. Perhaps this goes someway to explain his affinity with boxing, ‘There is never an end to training in boxing. You can always be better. Once you have a five punch combo down, then you start trying to tie together a seven punch combo.’ Michael explains,
‘Boxing is a science. People think it is about two people just slugging it out in a ring, but the technical side would blow your mind. It’s where your feet are, where your hands are, knowing your next move.’ Michael, who is a father of three, is not the only member of his family to find himself drawn to the world of rounds and punching bags, his son Michael Junior, who for the length of my interview with his father has been studying a video of another competitors fight behind the reception desk, has been making waves within the boxing community. Clearly very talented, the young athlete already has one UK national title under his belt and has hopes of representing Ghana in the London Olympics next year. ‘Boxing has brought me and my son closer,’ Michael tells me, ‘it’s funny though, we both came to the sport at the same time but completely separately.’ Michael is obviously incredibly proud of his son, and rightly so. When I ask him who is all time boxing hero is, he replies with a wry smile, ‘Muhammad Ali, at least until my son wins the world title.’
