emember, remember, the whole of November. As for me it is the very best of months. With its chilly temperatures, dreary weather and fondness for precipitation, the penultimate month of the year might seem an odd choice to champion. So why do I love it so? Well, it is no doubt in some part because my birthday falls within its 30 days, but there are a myriad of other things to love about the 11th month. Such as the fashion - If the calendar were your wardrobe, then November would certainly be the coat. In ‘Baby, It’s Getting Cold Outside’ we run down this winter’s most desirable coats. And because it’s not just ladies who need wrap up warm, we have dedicated our men’s trends page to all things woolly, with a selection of stylish-as-theyare-snugly knitwear. November, of course is also home to fireworks night, check out the various local events happening on the 5th and throughout the rest of the month, with our ‘What’s On Guide.’ However, if even the thought of candyfloss and bonfires is not enough to convince you of November’s charms then we also have plenty of ways for you to get away this month. From Provence to Mexico, in ‘Making The Most Of It...’ we pick the best breaks to make the most of the last of your annual leave. Ok, so you’ve walked past them countless times but I bet you’ve never actually done any of them. How many of you have got one of those ‘me with a beefeater’ photos, where you’re not in your primary school uniform? You just don’t do you, when you know you can do it any time. To make your ‘London Day’ even more fun, you could dress up for the experience. You could even adopt an accent for the occasion; no-one will question it, not with your bum bag as back up. So that’s what I’m going to be doing this month and I suggest you do the same – I’ll send you a post card from my visit. So what if I get home before it arrives – that’s not the point!

Upon the arrival of the steaks at the table Lane proceeds to pick up the lump of ungulate and slaps it on his trousers, yelling ‘I've got a big Texas belt buckle, yeah!’ What marks this seemingly inconsequential piece of beef based accessorizing out as memorable, is not just that it is the first time you see Lane relax that upper lip a bit, but also the disconcerting realization that the steak in question looks so spectacularly good, you would give your collector’s edition signed boxset to have it for dinner. Even after its trouser pressing. And that is the sort of steak you get at Hawksmoor. A carnivores dream, Hawksmoor is a temple to the glories of British beef. The myriad of cuts to be found on the steakhouse’s menu all come from excellent, Yorkshire-based butcher Ginger Pig. And alongside the expected Rump and Sirloin you will also find the more specialty Porterhouse and Chateaubrian. Each of which is perfectly aged and cooked with the sort of love that makes you wonder if the chef had known this particular cow personally, and maybe even raised it as his own. Starters focus of British seafood, with Dorset rock oysters and blue lobster all finding their rightful home. The bar’s surprisingly good cocktails are the perfect thing to wash arguably the best steaks in London down with. And amongst all the animal protein, don’t forget to save some room for Hawksmoor’s legendary beef dripping chips.

Age: 57 Height: 5ft 7’’ weight: 11st 8lbs Debut Fight hen Gary McGrath’s nephew Alex Field was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour, his friend John Rolfe desperately wanted to help out. So he organised a charity boxing event to raise funds for Alex’s crucial brain surgery. There was only one problem – he had nobody to fight. So he took his mate Steve Bailey down to the Warren Wood pub in Buckhurst Hill and after several large Bacardis he convinced him be his opponent. Bring on the Rocky training montage. Sadly, Alex passed away before the match could go ahead, so John has selected another worthy cause – that of Grace Windram, who met Alex through the children’s charity The Tree of Hope. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy in 2008, she is unable to walk or crawl, and must rely on a wheelchair to move around. Her parents are hoping that the money raised by the charity boxing match will help pay for life-changing surgery which could eventually allow her to walk with the aid of crutches.

Steve has already sustained a broken nose and a cracked rib, which shows that he’s working hard at least. He has been dividing his five times a week training sessions between Alan Mortlock’s Gym and RJ’s Gym, under the watchful eye of experienced boxer and manager Alan Mortlock. Not bad, considering John chose Steve as an opponent because he thought he’d be an ‘easy target.’ But boxing is something that Steve has always wanted to do, so his determination is hardly surprising. Maybe that’s why John isn’t getting complacent. He’s also sparring five times a week, with the help of former pro Dominic Negus and Ian Wilson of Spartan Gym. The event to be held at The Prince Regent, Chigwell on 26th November promises to be a fantastic night of boxing entertainment, with several other fights being organised by Noel Tierney of Club KO in Walthamstow. Even if he might not win the match, John is certainly going

all out to raise cash for Grace, as the evening also includes a charity auction of boxing memorabilia, as well as a raffle. Although table seats are already sold out, you can still snap up a balcony ticket on the night for £20 – money that goes straight into Grace’s operation fund. Surely a good enough reason already, but you’ll also get to experience an event that’s more than capable of punching above its weight. John and Steve would like to thank several people for helping them with their training programmes. Sean and Adam Mortlock for their motivation, as well as Chris Mac of Virgin Active, along with Rod and Terry ‘The Tan’ of RJ’s Gym. In addition, Steve would like to thank his friend Bill Mahoney for his support, and Paul Isaacs of Queen’s Dental Practice for making his gum shield. Perfect fit, apparently! Just Married Sallie & Andy Smith When happy couple Sallie and Andy viewed Gaynes Park for their wedding venue, they were so impressed that they cancelled their other viewings.We discussed vintage, venue and romantic surprises with the newly-weds. How did you two first met? Sallie: We met eight years ago through mutual friends. Andy was always a flirt and I felt lucky to just be one of his string of girls. When he moved to Ireland with his family we both just decided to move on. But in the end we missed each other so much that he moved back after just ten months.

Tell us about the proposal – how did it happen? Sallie: Andy proposed on Valentine’s. He suggested he wanted to take me out to dinner for Valentine’s Day; I laughed and said I didn't want to sit in a cheesy restaurant with lots of other couples. Disappointed he suggested he cook for me. I laughed again and suggested that he just get a Marks and Spencer’s meal as it would be less hassle. He gave up, bought the meal deal and proposed after we ate our readymade dessert. I cried and immediately said yes.

We admire Andy’s perseverance! So that is the proposal, now tell us about the big day - Did you have a special theme? Sallie: Traditional with a touch of vintage. I hung lots of acrylic crystals from the trees by the Orangery, which twinkled in the sun and we dotted small glass lanterns around the Mill Barn.

Were there any surprises on the day? Sallie: Andy was planning on driving himself to the venue with his best man and ushers. He loves campervans so I booked him one to turn up on the morning, decked out with ribbons, ready to take him to the venue, as a surprise. Andy: I gave Sallie a Links of London bracelet to wear on our special day as her ‘something new’.

We hear the honeymoon was a bit of a surprise … Sallie: We decided we couldn’t afford to go on honeymoon this year and were planning to do something at a later stage. Some close friends and the bridesmaids and groomsman decided to club together and paid for us to spend a week in a luxury 5* apartment in a beautiful part of Tenerife. Other guests were in on the surprise and gave us Euros to spend on the holiday. It was the perfect end to our perfect wedding celebrations.

pOcKeT ids are expert at levering money out of mum and dad with little regard for how or where that money came from. They are manipulative – a flutter of the eyelashes to dad or an adoring smile to mum and they’ve bagged the vital twenty quid they want. And, they’ll expect that any change is theirs too. T-mobile recently carried out a survey amongst 13 to 15-year-olds to test their knowledge of the price of things. Typically the youngsters knew the prices of the latest smart phones on the market, but were less aware of the price of texts. Possibly because their parents paid the bill? The kids surveyed could quote the price of trainers and iPads, but were unsure of the cost of daily items such as you would find in the supermarket. Living in one of the capitals of consumerism as we do, these findings are not so surprising, after all, the cost of carrots is boring to kids. However, what they are too young to realise is that the only boring thing about money is not having enough of it.

But where do kids learn the vital life skill of money management? Firstly by observation, just like any other skill we learn growing up. Which is great if mum and dad are on top of things. However typically as parents our own finances are often not what we’d like them to be, particularly in the current climate. Or, often our household economics are so complex that how we handle our money doesn’t mean much to a child. The result is that kids just don’t seem to get that every product or service you can imagine requires payment of some kind. Modern day kids are though under tremendous pressure – to get a job, to contribute to society and also to do well at school and aspire to university. Consequently, like many parents we are guilty of feeling the desire to protect our kids for as long as we possibly can from the harshness of the rat-race we live in. This we Words by Sue Lovett

have to balance with the need to give them some appreciation for the things they buy, perhaps by giving them pocket money and encouraging them to use their own money when they buy things. Leading economists have gathered evidence showing that the weaker the maths skills of the citizens of a country, the more indebted its citizens are and its economy. In the league table drawn up from the findings Greece and Portugal are near the bottom, the UK is 19th and Ireland 20th. Not surprisingly Switzerland and Germany are near the top.

earlier this year more than 120 Mps launched a campaign to make financial education compulsory in schools. Members of the new all-party parliamentary group on financial education for young people said it was vital that students were taught about debt. New university tuition fees kick in next year. Fees will triple to in most cases, £9000 per year. Accommodation costs are extra. With the average degree course lasting three, sometimes four years, that’s a hefty debt for a twenty-two-year-old to carry. Surely it is more vital now than ever for our children to be taught to understand how finance works.

The Facts of life we’re not talking about the birds and the bees here, but another message that can be equally difficult to explain to our young – the pounds and the pennies. Any responsible parent will want to teach their kids the financial facts of life, because if there’s one thing every one of us will have learnt from experience and that is that money talks and it’s amazing how quickly it can say ‘goodbye.’

JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN DIRECTED BY OLIVER PARKER Rowan Atkinson reprises his role as the hapless spy in this sequel to the original James Bond parody. Admittedly, the plot is hardly ‘Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy,’ but the film is easy to watch thanks largely to Atkinson’s efforts, and it certainly fits the bill for family fun. Despite the fairly predictable humour, there are a few laugh-out-loud moments during the film’s less flashy scenes, when Atkinson is allowed to bounce off his co-stars and demonstrate that bumbling social incompetence that he is undisputedly king of. in MAGAZINE 51

in Land Rover doesn’t launch new models very often and this - the Evoque - is meant to appeal to people who don’t want a full-size Range Rover (and the running costs), but do want to tap into the brand’s core of cool and classy durability. The looks have Range Rover written all over them, but without being too traditional. There’s the same slab-faced front end, imposing grille, pronounced wheel arches and raked rear. The genes are obvious. But from there on in, it’s all change. The Evoque’s headlights frown menacingly over the large front bumper, the windscreen sweeps back in a very un-Range Rover manner, and glass space is comparatively minimal, especially in coupe form. Meanwhile, the rear has the usual twin exhaust pipes, but they fit flush into a rear diffuser and look appropriately ‘concept.’

’m really sorry, but we can’t insure you’ was the message I was greeted with when I arrived at Lookers’ plush Bishop Stortford showroom. But then who could blame them? Arriving in a battle scared Volvo, with a face that masks my years too well and a licence laden with points that masks my nature not well enough - I’m not the ideal candidate to drive your shiny new Range Rover, but thankfully, and with a bit of persuasion, I did.

Inside, it’s the same story. The (almost as) commanding driving position being the most obvious link to a traditional Range Rover, but where big brother’s interior is an imposing mass of fine materials, the Evoque’s is far less angular. It’s sportier in feel. Getting in (and this is best done at night) you’re treated to Evoque apparitions projected below both wing mirrors, and the kickplate glows blue with the words ‘Range Rover.’ The interior lighting can be adjusted to different shades and map lights are operated by sweeping your finger across the lenses, doing so reveals a spacious interior fittingly kitted-out with leather and polished metal. The boot, although the smallest in the range, will happily accommodate either a Labrador or a pack Chihuahuas, and their requisite handbags - depending on your lifestyle.

The only real annoyances, inside, are seats (in this 3-door Coupe) which are slow to allow rear-seat access and sat-nav that could be more intuitive. These aside, it’s all extremely well executed and puts the ambience of cars costing twice the Evoque’s £42k, to shame. The 4wd Si4 Dynamic Coupe, which is the sporty variant, with its 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine (you can read about the diesel in the following article), produces 240bhp and 251Ib ft of torque, will return 30mpg and allows for a 135mph top speed and 0-60mph in 7.1 seconds. Surprisingly for a 4-pot, it even sounds good doing it. Going fast in a straight line has never been a major challenge, though - big car just equals bigger engine. But in the corners? That’s where the Evoque marks itself out, helped by Adaptive Dynamics and MagnaRide. Switched to ‘Dynamic’ mode the Evoque’s body control is the equal of the prodigious grip generated by 20’ wheels, it can be thrown into corners with confidence, helped also by weighty and comparatively communicative steering and a smooth, if stiff, ride. And, when you’re not in the mood, you can switch back to the cosseting ride of the normal settings. The six-speed auto, while not the absolute best in the business holds on to gears in sport mode, and keeps things refined when not. Offroading is not the Evoque’s primary role in life, but we’ve taken one across some slippery and heavily rutted tracks in the Scottish Borders, and found it up to the task, so we’ll assume it can cope with the snow-dusted roads of the South’s winter. Road-biased tyres and a lack of ride height would limit it for much else. Offroad ability aside the Evoque has all the character of a traditional Range Rover, but handles better on the road and manages to ooze a sense of cool menace that is absent from the larger models. After the helpful staff at Lookers had jumpstarted my ‘trusty’ Volvo after a minor side-lights-left-on-forthree-days oversight, I handed back the keys to Evoque convinced it is the best in class and a fine addition to the line-up.

the Five-dooR evoque diesel the Family evoque, iF you Feel you must… The 3-door petrol Evoque may be the prettiest and fastest in the range, but it is not expected to be the best seller. Unsurprisingly, that honour falls to the more practical and fuel efficient 5-door diesel. Although the extra doors take something of the concept look away from the Evoque, they do make for a more sensible family car. Accommodating your nearest and dearest with ease. The 5-door Evoque’s rear legroom is impressive, even with tall people in the front. And boot space is fair, too. Although we’d have reservations about letting children anywhere near the lovely cabin. It’s that lovely… Out on the road, the diesel’s characteristics suit the job of lugging the relatively heavy Evoque down the road, with plenty of low-down torque (310 lb ft) it doesn’t need to be revved as hard as the petrol to give its best, and riding the torque wave it can reach 60mph 9.5 seconds and go on to a 124mph top speed. We tried both the manual and the auto’ box and, although the manual was direct and precise, second gear could find the Evoque caught off boost, certainly we would opt for the auto’ which seems to better suit the car. Of course the best part of the diesel is its fuel economy. With the 2.2 litre 190bhp version will be capable of around 50mpg, say Land Rover. The prestige model we tested did without the dynamic suspension settings of next door’s road test, but it’s still a tidy handler with an excellent ride. Saying that, we did find the diesel’s steering was slightly dulled. A result, we think, of the heavier engine. So, the five-door diesel’s not quite as pretty as the three-door petrol, but it is bigger inside, more practical and more economical. Why you would want to expose such a beautiful machine to a family? We do not know... But if you really must, it comes highly recommend.

This month photographer Garry Castle gave iN Magazine an exclusive window on to the lavish world of yacht racing, the heart racing subject matter for his latest trio of limited edition books.

uring the month of September hundreds of the world’s most beautiful and skilfully crewed yachts migrate from all four corners of the globe to Monaco harbour for the start of one of the most spectacular oceanic sporting events of the year, the Régates Royales.

Both these remarkable boats were originally built in Fife, Scotland over a centaury ago. Sadly at some point over those hundred years both vessels fell into disrepair, with the Mariquita almost being lost to the elements. Following a painstaking program of restoration both boats are now back to their former glory and can be found racing all over the world.

And as the photographer for Yacht Club de Monaco I was there to capture all the action from the race. The weather gods were smiling for the first day of the competition, with the winds up and the Monaco sun beating down; conditions were perfect for an exciting day on the waves. I love this race and I feel very fortunate to be involved is such a legendary and prestigious event.

The next leg of the race sees the yachts travel from Cannes to Saint Tropez. As we waved goodbye to the glamour of Cannes, the wind struck up granting us and our shore gathered audience of onlookers a dramatic departure. As the sails filled and the yachts gathered knots, we sped towards the horizon and the celebrations in Saint Tropez.

Which is not to say getting ‘the shot’ whilst on the water is without its difficulties. We tailed the yachts in a fully restored classic Riva Aquarama. The gloriously stylish Italian speedboats were made famous in the 1960’s when virtually all the global glitterati where photographed on a deck of one or other of these ‘Ferrari’s of the boat world.’ We put the Riva through its sleek paces chasing down the yachts and capturing all the excitement as they raced towards Cannes. Even amongst the world’s most beautiful ocean going craft it is impossible not to play favourites. One of the most noteworthy yachts we captured making headway towards the South of France was the Tuiga. A restored J Class, the Tuiga is the flagship for the Yacht Club de Monaco. The spectacular vessel was presented to the club by none other than Prince Albert of Monaco, head of the House of Gramaldi, and as a member of the club I am privileged to have access to sail her. Another one of my favourites from the glamorous flotilla must be the Mariquita, which is captained by my friend Jim Thom. He races the Mariquita all over the globe, and both his speed and skill are legendary.
