To me October means just one thing: Halloween. The origin of our annual All Hallows celebrations are actually surprisingly murky. With folklorists divided over whether it comes from the roman festival of fruit and seeds (that explains the pumpkins), the Celtic festival of summer’s end or, perhaps most fittingly, a festival of the dead called Parentalia. More likely than not, given holiday’s habits for amalgamation, it is probably a heady cocktail of all three. Many bemoan the Americanisation of the 31st October, but I personally think that we British we have far too few excuses for a party scribbled on the calendar as it is. So any additional excuse to: dress up, eat too many sweets and work a pair of fangs, is a thing to be embraced whole heartedly. Not to mention, I carve a pretty mean jack-o’-lantern too. In the spirit of spooky fun we have plenty of tricks and treats for you this October. In our spectacular fashion feature we interview Mademoiselle Borcher about the gothic and glamorous couture brand that bears her name. As preparation for any Halloween frightening flick fests you may have planned, Robert Jone’s explores the fascinating science behind the screams and enduring appeal of the horror movie, in his feature ‘Fear Factor’. Our ‘Heavy Metal’ beauty page gives you the best in steely looks with our pick of this season’s metallic make-up. And for the boys, we have some of the best jackets to see you through to winter, along with a review for a cocktail bar which comes complete with its very own mad scientist’s laboratory.

Welcome to iN’s new society column, ‘Girl About Town’ where socialite Caroline Polledri gives her own hilarious take on being out and about in essex and beyond.
It’s always amazed me how much of a big deal Halloween is over in the US. It is literally a national holiday over there. You can dress as crazy as you like and no-one bats an eye lid, in fact it would be weird if you didn’t dress up. Come the 31st spooky masks and silly capes are practically mandatory. And I don’t think that is a bad thing and really, we would perhaps benefit from taking a leaf out of the Yankee spell book. As the years have gone by Essex has got a lot better at this annual tradition. There are many places and events for you to parade around in costume. And there is a lot more freedom as to what guise you choose to take, it is not just a case of witch, Frankenstein or ghoul, now you can pretty much make Little Bo Peep look scary and everyone gets it. I love the people that go all out, no holds barred, no shame – they’re always the most fun, rather than the ones that have hoisted their boobs into ‘sexy snow white’ or ‘sultry cat woman’ and occasionally ‘sexy bumble bee’. Which might I add makes no sense, when has anyone ever looked at a bumble bee and said ‘Phwoar - look at the sting on that sort’? Trying too hard to look nice in fancy dress misses the point, and always has the opposite effect. You just end up looking a little bit awkward and out place. So with that in mind I have made up my mind that this year wherever I land on All Hallow’s Eve I will be doing so dressed in a full Gorilla suit. It’s something I have always wanted to do but been too worried that I will collapse under its weight to attempt before. But not this year, this year I am willing to risk it.
And I won’t be taking the head off either, at anytime. Oh no! I want the mystery to remain, hushed whispers asking ‘who was the gorilla?’ ‘Who invited it?’ I want to be caught on camera in as many different places as I can, even if they aren’t celebrating Halloween with a fancy dress party and are merely having dinner or late night shopping in Tesco’s. I want to be the talk of the town. Hailed as the ‘unidentified beast of the golden triangle’. So if you see me, don’t tell anyone and for goodness sake don’t call my name, instead shake my hairy hand, take a photo and praise me for the fact that I am undoubtedly suffering under a smelly, second hand velour animal costume for the cause of silliness or at least as an excuse for it!

ChiChi is not Jo’s first foray into boutiques, those of you who know her or recognise the name, will be aware that she was responsible for the 2002 purchase and rebrand of the Loughton boutique Evergreen, which has now been reborn as the updated ChiChi Boutique. But what you might not know about this local super woman is that as well owning and running her own fashion empire by smartphone and with the help of her superb team is that she also works full time in a Listed Derivatives Project role within the City Group Bank. So, it would be more than fair to suggest that Jo has a brain for business. And it is this coupled with her knowledge of the local area that allowed Jo to spot a niche in the market in Essex for a boutique with personality and value without compromising on style and quality - which is exactly what ChiChi Boutique plans to offer. And with Jo’s talent as a buyer combined with her uncanny ability to spot new and up and coming designers, great customer service and quality and style without the price tag, we have no doubt that ChiChi Boutique is set for great and fashionable things. And let iN Magazine be the first in wishing Jo every success in her new venture.

As the winter draws in and covers the nation under a chilly blanket of darkness, what better way to get into the spooky spirit than with a good horror movie? With their malevolent monsters, gruesome gore and ear-splitting screams, you can always depend on these celluloid scarefests to leave you crouched behind the
sofa, quivering with terror like an anxious jelly on a first date. but why are these few simple ingredients found in so many scary movies, and just what is it that makes them so effective? It's time to find out, as we delve into the psychology behind classic horror cliches.
in MAGAZINE 17
ver since Godzilla first stomped a rubbery footprint over a terrified Tokyo in 1954, terrifying creatures have been a staple food in the healthy horror diet. A good monster, such as The Descent's cannibals or the toothy terror of Predator, can leave an audience’s faces twisted into a permanent gurn of shock and horror. A bad one, though, will have you rolling in the aisles with laughter as a 'creature' - quite obviously a man in a badly-fitting rubber suit - paws ineffectually at a couple of squiffy teenagers. To find out where we draw the line between fearsome and flop, we need to look at why we react to different animals in different ways and here, Dr. David Rakison comes in. ‘When you look at phobias, most of them are related to evolution,’ says the researcher, who investigated how babies form their first fears. He found that at just a few months old, kids pay more attention to spider and snake shapes than they do to jumbled up, nonsense shapes.
‘If you put a baby in a tank with a snake, they would show no fear whatsoever,’ says Rakison, but we have ‘templates’ which make it easier for us to recognise certain animals, and therefore develop fears of them. We evolved this way to give ourselves more chance of survival when we're otherwise rolling around helplessly in our nappies and dribbling all over our Thomas the Tank Engine bibs. The other side to this evolutionary coin is that, when we're grown up, we then experience the ‘babyface effect’ - when our natural instincts to nurture our children become over-generalised to any young animal that reminds us of babies. Little kittens have round little faces and lovely big eyes, so we find it really difficult not to treat them like they're our own offspring – you can see this for yourself by watching how most people talk to their pets. Who's a wuvly widdle pusscat, then? This effect is coded into one of the most primitive parts of our brain: the ‘nucleus accumbens,’ which looks like a pair of twisted almonds and is tucked far away from all those other bits that deal with sensible thoughts about mortgages and choosing breakfast cereal. No, the accumbens is all about raw emotion: it's one of the brain's main pleasure centres, and so every time you see something a bit baby-like, it floods your system with happy thoughts and you're practically powerless to resist. This is why there aren't any famous movies about killer toddlers - and it's also why people with baby-like faces tend to get off more lightly in court. The best monsters, then, are the ones that look the least like people and the most like dangerously evil spider-snakes. If the make-up team have been slacking and you can still tell that the monster has a human shape, it's not going to set your pulse racing – in fact, it'll probably leave your pulse snoozing gently in the starting blocks. Worse, if it looks a bit babyish, you might end up wanting to give it a little cuddle. Monsters that look like people are just a bit rubbish – but what about people who end up looking like monsters? That's when you get... 18 in MAGAZINE
hy is Toby Maguire's Spiderman a cute superhero, but Jeff Goldblum's The Fly a disgusting monstrosity? They should be equally repulsive, when you think about it: after all, they're both grotesque fusions, each a dirty cocktail of man and insect blended together like a bad martini – but while Toby was effortlessly transformed overnight from boffin to buff-'un, Jeff spent the whole of his film losing his hair, growing an unflattering pair of mandibles and throwing up on things. This is the ‘body horror’ effect: even if there's nothing inherently wrong about what's going on, anything that distorts the image of the human body is immediately creepy. Especially if it ends up with them covered in open wounds, or spewing out gobbets of green goo. Yuk! Again, psychologists say that this is rooted in the dark recesses of our evolutionary past. We've developed an instinctive aversion to people with wounds and infections because they might pass their illnesses onto us. This is why zombies are so popular a choice of monster: with their brain-hungry armies of shuddering half-decayed corpses all shuffling about like the three a.m. crowd at Tesco, they're the perfect depiction of the human body ravaged by disease. Even if it wasn't trying to claw your skull off, you still wouldn't want to touch one. This infectionavoiding instinct also explains why we find sticky, mucusy gore – like the Alien's long, thick dribble – so disgusting. It's because of its similarity to saliva, the most bacteria-ridden of all bodily fluids. This might also explain why so many people are afraid of clowns. Just as we develop the ability to recognise spiders at a young age, we also learn to pick out human shapes too – this is vital to help us spot Mum and Dad in an otherwise crowded world. However, if we spot someone who fits the human shape but seems to deviate from it somehow, then it can trigger the body horror response.
‘people are typically frightened by things which are wrong in some way, things which are disturbingly unfamiliar,’ says professor Paul Salkovskis, a phobia expert. Clowns, with their big feet, odd movements and distorted makeup, can inadvertently register in our brains as 'humans gone wrong' and leave us trembling with terror rather than laughter. The real irony is that the effect is most pronounced in clowns' main audience of young children: the appropriately named Dr. Ronald Doctor, a psychology professor at California State University, says ‘Kids around two or so are very reactive to a familiar body type with an unfamiliar face.’ When he says reactive, he means that it makes them cry. A lot. He certainly has a point: when researchers from Sheffield interviewed children about how they'd like a hospital ward to be decorated, all 250 of them insisted that pictures of clowns would be too creepy. So if you ever find yourself wallpapering a playroom, it's probably best to stick to balls and balloons unless you want to kept awake by the sound of... in MAGAZINE 19
aaaah! If there's one accessory that absolutely no selfrespecting horror movie would dare leave the house without, it's a really good scream: a proper, window-rattling shriek that hits you right in the gut and turns your spine into a wibbly column of mush. Screaming is one of those rare things that's the same across every culture on the planet - you can stick absolutely anybody in front of an angry grizzly bear that fancies a bit of person for their dinner, and the result will be the same: yaaaargh! By now, you probably won't be surprised to hear that the secret behind the scream's power goes all the way back to the days when hunting mammoths and dodging sabre-tooth tigers was all part of the daily grind, and wolf-pelt capes were really in. The theory is that screams developed as a way to call for help and warn others of danger: plenty of studies have found that they serve this purpose in groups of apes and monkeys, our closest genetic relatives. A proper, blood-curdling scream instantly puts our brains on danger alert, making us tense, anxious and ready for action – and if lots of people all around us are screaming at once, the effect is even stronger (which is why horror films are always more scary in the cinema than they are at home). Scream scientists have even analysed hundreds of films to figure out the pattern of the perfect shriek: they found that adventure movies tend to have the gentlest shouts, but in horror shockers they're much harsher and more irregular. W. Tecumseh Fitch, a cognitive biologist, sums it up neatly when he says that,
‘Screams are basically chaos.’ And research suggests that, as screams become more chaotic, they become both scarier and harder to ignore – especially if we can see the face of the person screaming. Yet it's not just screams that can get us all worked-up: the soundtrack plays a part as well. This is part of what makes Alien so terrifying: as the tension builds up, the music starts to imitate a human heartbeart getting faster and faster. Scientists have found that, even without all the scary images, if people listen to these sorts of sounds then their own pulse will unconsciously start changing to match. A rapid heartbeat leads to higher anxiety and puts the rest of the body on alert as the famous fight-or-flight response kicks in, and before you know it you're clinging onto your seat for dear life and breathing like an excitable hyena strapped to a runaway steam train.
20 in MAGAZINE
ow we know a bit more about how these films work, there's still one burning question: why are they so much fun in the first place? What is it about being terrified that we enjoy so much? The science suggests that it comes from a tension between the highthinking, rational parts of our brain and the more primitive, emotional ones: the nucleus accumbens might be all about having a good time, but it has a sinister cousin, the amygdala, responsible for sending fear coursing through our veins. The amygdala isn't meant to think things through, it just reacts as quickly as it can so that you don't waste precious time – rather than stroking your chin as you ponder whether or not to run away from an angry tiger, you just leg it first and ask questions later. The amygdala, simple thing that it is, can't distinguish between fiction and reality, but the cleverer bits can: so while the basic parts of your brain are trying to get you all worked up, the sophisticated ones that know it's only a film are calming you down by firing off the relief response: that lovely mix of chemicals that makes you feel brilliant when you've just escaped from danger. Scientists have even found a gene that makes it easier for the rational brain to reassert control – people with this gene are far more likely to enjoy horror movies, while those without it find them just too scary. The Ouija board is another example of this phenomenon: invented by Elijah Bond in 1890, for years it was just a harmless parlour game – until people began to forget its origins and started thinking it was real, removing the rational mind's ability to keep fear in check. Nowadays, Ouija boards are considered to be very scary business indeed, even though the word Ouija is still trademarked by Hasbro, the company behind easygoing hits like Guess Who and Mousetrap.
So if you want to get the most fun out of a scary movie, the trick is to remind yourself that they're not real – next time you catch yourself pulling a cushion over your eyes and shaking with fright, just take a deep breath, think about all the little ways that film-makers trick you into feeling scared, and remember: it's all in the mind.

FASHION
head of this month’s fashion feature iN Magazine’s Editor Rose Keen caught up with Mademoiselle Borcher, the unconventional creative mind behind the darkly gothic fashion label BORCHER and self confessed ‘black fairy tale woman’, to talk designing for dolls, drama and wanting to dress Helena Bonham Carter.
22 in MAGAZINE
How did you end up working in fashion? My passion for art and design started when I was a young girl. I would design all sorts of dresses and then have my grandmother’s neighbor, who was a seamstress, sew them up for my dolls. Later, this passion brought my attention to the story of a man called Erik Mortensen who had gone to Paris and started out as a cleaner for a designer and ended up the head-designer for Balmain. This inspired me so much that I would often dream about standing in an extraordinary room, sending one beautiful woman out after another, all wearing my designs. That I should work with fashion and art has somehow always been a driving passion of mine. When I started at the fashion design academy I finally felt I was in my proper element.
Tell us about your label BORCHeR? I established BORCHER in 2008. Since then we have grown into a well known, exclusive and dramatic fairy tale. BORCHER is very much inspired by fairy stories and the universe within them. It is a very dark, dramatic, passionate and surreal world, where every detail is sensually done. BORCHER’s passion is to create art for women. It is not just a brand, but an experience. BORCHER is the black dramatic feather dancing in the sea of white. I am very much inspired by fairytales. They are often dark and eerie, yet they are never sinister or sad. They are very often dramatic with a surreal twist. I gather inspiration from everything I see: old dusty books in a vintage shop, a curious movie, music, art, old pictures or old and crooked keys that just might open up a parallel universe. Creations by Borcher: Couture jacket with hand folded sleeves £1.095 & Pencil skirt with buttons front £529. It’s all about playing and putting things together. A very wise man once told me that the most important thing in the world was to never forget your inner child. That’s why she happily nests inside me. in MAGAZINE 23
How did your love of fairytales start? My love for fairy stories began when I was quite young. I couldn’t think of anything better than sitting by the light of a candle reading fairytales. I was an only child and not often in the company of the neighborhood children. Instead, I would sneak around in my own little world of dragons, witches, spells, books and secret places. This was the place I found my magic to survive as a child. Fairytales are never-ending and there are no limitations for their adventures. I love the thought of something that has no end. No boundary.
How did the world of fairytales influence the creation of BORCHeR? As I became older and started to become the person I am today, the fairytales started evolving within my mind. Amongst all the floating feathers and majestic ravens, beautiful women arose. My muses - dressed in the most amazing garments. I felt the urge to share my thoughts, to narrate my stories and show the world this enchanting universe. That is why I created BORCHER.
Tell me about the BORCHeR woman. How do you envisage her? The BORCHER woman is a woman of passion. She is a figure of power that finds the little and secret detail to be of most importance. She loves to spoil herself and to dress up. But most of all she dares. She dares to be a woman.
If you could dress anybody who would it be and why? If I had the power to turn back time, I would dress Marlene Von Dietrich. She was so radiant. And extremely feminine, she had a certain force in her stare that few could surpass. Although, the playful Helena Bonham Carter could be quite interesting to dress.
And finally as it is the October issue, what will you be doing this All Hallow’s eve? Unfortunately, we do not celebrate Halloween in Denmark, as they do in the USA, but my amazing husband and I just love this tradition. We share the same passion for parties and are always looking for an excuse to invite friends over for bubbles and food. So, I am pretty sure that a mystic invites will be appearing in the mail boxes of dearest friends soon. 24 in MAGAZINE

I notice that each of your collections has its very own fairytale associated with it. Can you tell me about the story behind your latest collection? My SS12 is to be displayed in Paris later this month, so you will just have to settle for the AW11 tale. A couple of seasons ago, I stumbled upon an old cottage in a beautiful forest. I decided to explore and found a very heavy and old wooden door. It was covered in marks and ornamentation. They resembled riddles or spells. The door was ajar and I dared to peak through. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I noticed a woman across the crooked oak floor. She was dressed in fine silk lingerie and it seemed as if time had frozen her from the 1920s. Suddenly, the room was filled with a mysterious rattling sound and to my fear, I discover that the floor is covered in scarab beetles and fabled insects. Around the woman, beautiful black and blue butterflies float, their wings reflected in the shields from the beetles. The creatures start crawling all over her, covering her. Until they magically become one of the most beautiful creations I have ever seen. From afar it looks still, but looking closer you can see that it truly is alive. She rises and moves into the darkest part of the room. I decide to follow in her footsteps and discover a secret passageway that leads to a subworld between two dreamworlds. Here, I realize that she is the creature-queen and this is her kingdom. 26 in MAGAZINE

EACH MONTH THE BEAUTY EXPERTS AT PURE MEDI-SPA, SOUTH WOODFORD, WILL BE ANSWERING YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS.
“
I am tired of trying different products and treatments for my pigmentation. I want to know what is really best for my skin, without having to waste both time and money. Bella, Chingford.
“
With summer well and truly over, and our tans start to wear off it is only now that we see the pigmentation damage we have done to our skin. And unfortunately in our attempts to make amends we are often sucked into buying things which are kinder on our pocket than to our skin. Although there are a multitude of treatments available for pigmentation including medical dermabrasion, chemical peels and various lightening serums - we often end up with a plethora of half empty bottles lining our bathroom and start courses based on a whim with no clear idea what to use and when. At PURE Medi-Spa we use the Beau Visage™ system which is a favourite amongst all our clients since it gives both the therapist and the client the ability to see what is really happening underneath the skin surface. The Beau Visage™ utilises SIA™, the only technology which can actually see up to 2mm below your skin and generates images of the blood supply (capillaries), melanin (pigmentation), and sun damage to your face. Scientific research has shown that skin tone can affect perceived skin age by up to 20 years! A Beau Visage™ consultation means you can benefit from an accurate analysis of the true health of your skin, understand why your skin appears the way it does and it allows our doctors and therapists to target treatments more effectively. It will provide a tailored package based on your skin needs both as in-salon treatments and home care regimes. In addition, Beau Visage™ allows you to compare and monitor your progress over time, giving you the confidence that your treatment is working. WHY NOT BOOK IN FOR A CONSULTATION AND SEE WHAT YOUR SKIN REALLY NEEDS? NORMALLY £60 PER SESSION BUT £10 DURING OCTOBER. If you have a beauty question you would like answering in next month’s issue please email it to: editor@in-magazine.com

MONeY
Talks
FINANCIAl ADVICe... Welcome to iN Magazine’s ‘MONeY TAlkS’ section, where every month the experts at lB Group, a firm of chartered accountants and chartered tax advisers, will be answering your accountancy questions.
“
I own a company and have recently purchased and equipped a new commercial property. I have heard there will be changes to the tax rules making this purchase less beneficial to myself. Is this true? Raffa, Chigwell.
“
Yes, that is correct. One of the quieter aspects of the 2011 budget were the changes being made to the capital allowances regime for April 2012 onwards. One of them is the dramatic fall in the AIA (Annual Investment Allowance). In 2011, if you spent up to £100,000 on new, qualifying equipment, you could take 100% of that cost against your taxable income making it highly beneficial to buy new equipment. However, from April 2012 this has been reduced to £25,000, limiting the advantages of buying new equipment. Nonetheless, expenditure over and above this will still get 20% writing down allowance (18% from 1 April 2012). Whilst this change will affect the tax allowances of the purchase of equipment there is more concern of a proposed change by HMRC to retrospective claiming of capital allowances. As you purchased the commercial property you would probably have refurbished it to your standards as well. Whilst some of these costs are allowable for tax, the rules governing this can be very complicated. With the key to unlocking the potential significant tax savings being the ability to identify those costs over and above the obvious desks and chairs, businesses often hire a specialist to ascertain which of these costs are allowable in order to maximise their tax benefit. Previously, due to the nature of the work, is normally done several years after and then reclaims made on tax paid from the date of purchase. The proposed changes are looking to limit this retrospection to 2 years (April 2010), making any purchases before then impossible to reclaim allowances on. Therefore, we recommend that as you could fall under this proposed change that you seek advice on claiming the maximum allowances on your current purchase whilst this opportunity exists.

WHAT’S WHAT AND WHAT’S HOT IN OCTOBER!
music LET ENGLAND SHAKE PJ HARVEY
IRREVERENT BY CARINE ROITFELD What does one do after stepping down as Editor of French Vogue? Release an intoxicatingly glossy coffee table collection of your greatest style highs of course. Out later this month, Irreverent compiles magazine cut outs, personal photographs and ephemera and notes from the likes of Alexander McQueen and Tom Ford to create a 368 page portrait of one of the most important and idiosyncratic figures in fashion. As close as you can get to a style encyclopaedia this glorious, if mighty, tome is a must for any aspiring Voguette.
PJ Harvey has been making music history. In 2001, she was the first woman to win the Mercury Music Prize as a solo artist. Ten years later, a second win, with her most recent album Let England Shake, makes her the first artist to take home the award twice. As the name suggests Let England Shake is a quake of an album. Impassioned and political, over the course of a dozen tracks PJ Harvey explores war, its human cost and her beloved England's role as both aggressor and saviour. Let England Shake is ambiguous, beautiful and misty, much like the country it seeks to portray.

TROLL HUNTER ANDRE OVREDAL THE DINING ROOM AT DEAN STREET TOWNHOUSE SOHO
As a part of Richard Caring’s Soho House group it comes as no surprise to find that that The Dean Street Townhouse is cool. As the Daily Candy put it ‘Some things in life are certain. Your Mum makes the best roast. The Christmas no.1 will be an X Factor finalist. And the Soho House Group’s latest hotel will become the hottest spot in town.’ Rage Against The Machine aside, it would seem at least in terms of dining Chaos Theory might need to go back to the drawing board. With a menu of almost caricatured Britishness and signature dish of ‘mince and potatoes’ The Dean Street Townhouse is certainly not about nouvelle cuisine. Instead serves up the sort of fare that appeals to the stomach and nostalgia cooked expertly. It may be a little pricy and self conscious at times, but that doesn’t prevent The Dean Street Townhouse from being a champion eatery. It is fair to say that Troll Hunter takes a great deal from Jurassic Park. But where Spielberg had dinosaurs, Ovredal has creatures of Scandinavian folklore. Shot in the ‘found footage’ style originally pioneered by The Blair Witch Project, Troll Hunter purports to be documentary shot by a team of students investigating what is officially deemed to be a human-killing bear. Before stumbling across the bizarre fairytale truth of what is going on in the Norwegian countryside with the help of grizzled ex-comando now trollhunter Hans, played brilliantly by comedian Otto Jespersen. Surprisingly witty, the mocumentary stops just short of actually being scary but that does not detract from the excitement of this slightly bonkers Norwegian thrill fest.
Just Married Jenny & Rob Kelly Happy couple Rob Kelly and Jenny O’Mahony tied the knot in spring of this year in a vintage pink and ivory themed wedding at the beautiful Gaynes Park, Epping. We caught up with them to talk proposals in Russia, favourite flowers and capturing that very particular old English romance. Tell us how Rob popped the question? Jenny: Rob proposed on Christmas Eve in Red Square, Moscow. I had an inkling that he had plans afoot though I hadn’t expected it to be then and the setting was beautiful!
How romantic. Tell us about Gaynes Park? Jenny: We found Gaynes Park by researching civil ceremony venues in Hertfordshire and Essex. I fell in love with the place from the brochures and was immediately sold when we saw it. The quality of the food was also a huge bonus and I have had so many people tell me that the meal was the best wedding food they’ve ever had.
How and why did you choose it? Jenny: I love the Victorian walled garden and all the views across the countryside. Then for the reception we loved the intimate feel of the Mill Barn. Even though we had 120 guests, the wedding didn’t feel too big or too crowded. The layout is also great for keeping people together. The tree trunks are great for decoration and the fairy lights on the mezzanine just give the barn a lovely atmosphere.
Tell us about the gown? Jenny: The dress was a made to measure Mirror Mirror Couture design and I was fitted by Jane, the founder of Mirror Mirror.
Very romantic, from the photos we are noticing a trend... Jenny: The theme we chose was Old English Romantic. For this we had a vintage pink and ivory colour theme, a vintage luggage tag motif and a harpist.
This seemed to be reflected in the choice of flowers as well? Jenny: I knew immediately when we got engaged that I would use roses, which are my favourite flowers, for the wedding. Marion at Poppy’s Flowers was brilliant to work with. She created a pink hand-tied bouquet of roses with lace trim for me and ivory hand-tied bouquets with the same trim for my bridesmaids.
As for the day, did you have a favourite part? Jenny: The meal and dancing were definitely the best parts of the day. The atmosphere in the Mill Barn is lovely after dark.
Finally, do you have any advice for those with up coming nuptials? Rob: We chose to have a sweetheart table where Jenny and I sat by ourselves in the middle of the room. This worked very well for us as it meant we got to chat to each other but also get up and chat to people as we wanted, without having to worry about abandoning people on our table. Couples seeking a civil wedding or partnership ceremony have the choice of the elegant Orangery within the Walled Garden, which is approached by a long aisle through the garden, or the open-sided Gather Barn for an outdoor ceremony. Wedding breakfasts, receptions and evening entertainment take place in the spacious and contemporary Mill Barn that has a licensed bar and mezzanine level complete with raj-style furniture and table lanterns. In the evening the Gather Barn can be illuminated to great effect and is ideal for a hog roast or barbecue. The old Walled Garden and Orangery are ideal for drinks receptions in all seasons, whatever the weather, having many seating areas and photographic opportunities including a fairylight-lit pavilion, colourful herbaceous borders, old-fashioned roses and established shrubs. With unrestricted access within the venue and gardens, many couples and their photographers like to return later to capture romantic and informal shots of just the two of them with the backdrop of the parkland beyond – and sometimes even lit by moonlight.
At the Showcase Wedding Open Day, Gaynes Park’s Catering and Events Team will be present to answer any questions you may have about the fine food, wines and your wedding details. Gaynes Park has built its reputation not just on its beautiful location and surroundings, but also on the exceptional quality of its catering. BIG vs SMALL SCHOOLS ADVERTORIAL Kaye Lovejoy, Coopersale Hall’s Headmistress agrees, ‘When they start school, some young children are not able to cope with a full week, so we offer a graduated entry scheme that works well for our kindergarten children. The flip side is that our working parents really appreciate our before and after school programme, as the extended school day allows their children to stay in a varied and supportive environment with plenty to keep them occupied.’
iN Magazine talks to three of the top independent schools in Essex to find out what is so special about the smaller independent school. In the debate over what kind of schooling is best for our children, big schools versus small schools, which one wins? ‘Where we score highly’ observed Normanhurst’s Headmistress Claire Osborn, ‘is on the attention given to individual pupils needs. As we find that children thrive and surpass expected grades when given the opportunity to work in smaller groups. Our GCSE results speak for themselves. Normanhurst is based in North Chingford, and the vast majority of our pupils are local and come from the local area. All of our children, parents and staff belong to our strong community with a unique family atmosphere.’

At Oaklands School in Loughton, Headmistress Cheryl Macnair says, ‘I feel that the relationships between children, parents and teachers are key. Parents are always welcome to see me or their child’s teacher before or after school every day to chat about any aspect of school life. Oaklands has been providing private education in Loughton for 75 years and we feel that our pupils are our best ambassadors as they are consistently polite, confident and well prepared for senior schools.’ Parents naturally want the best for their children and selecting a school is a tricky decision – Open Days provide the perfect opportunity to compare and contrast, as long as you compare like with like. Not all areas, schools or children are alike; there is no ‘one best way’ to educate your child. So make sure you ask the right questions when you talk to the head, have a good look around, speak to other parents and really look at a school through your child’s eyes.

he Celts believed that on Halloween the disembodied spirits of the dead returned in search of living bodies to possess. To frighten the spirits away, villagers would dress up in ghoulish costumes and parade around the neighbourhood being as noisy and destructive as possible. These days we have teenagers. A little harsh maybe. But there’s many a grown-up that will cross the road and head for home when faced with a group of youths coming along the street. And many a grown-up may avoid home altogether, for behind the front door may lurk an eye-rolling, door-slamming, monosyllabic adolescent of their very own.
If you are reading this as the mum or dad of a toddler, let me tell you, you think that’s tough. parenting teenagers is the hardest job in the world. Seemingly hard-wired to push every boundary, teenagers have the potential to drive even the most well-balanced and mild-mannered parent to a point of anger they never imagined possible. Your teenager will make you more depressed than you could have contemplated and more frustrated than you ever believed you could be. Why do they do it? Because they are beginning to break free. They are learning how to live without mum and dad. In doing so they will experiment with versions of themselves in a quest to discover who they might be.
Experimentation may well be the way for teenagers to learn to take responsibility for their actions, however the alarming thing for parents is that for some youngsters this will involve some kind of unhealthy, dangerous, or anti-social pursuit. The teenage rebel is symbolic. They want to look grown up and impress their friends. If mum and dad disapprove it often makes teenage behaviour worse, arguments erupt and then they defy their parent’s restrictions deliberately as a way of asserting their independence. That’s bad enough but it’s the risky behaviour that causes the most worry. Excessive drinking, taking a short cut across a railway line, taking drugs – all the stuff of parent nightmares. For the teenager peerpressure, or a need to show off leaves the adolescent at the mercy of their rash selves. Scientists believe there may be an explanation for this risk-taking behaviour. It has emerged that the emotional region of the brain develops to maturity ahead of the part of the brain that controls rational thought. In other words, teenagers have well-developed emotions and feelings but have still not acquired the ability to think things through. They may understand it’s wrong not to drink and drive, but are not able to see the danger of accepting a lift home from a party in a mates car, not knowing whether the driver has had one too many, or maybe just not wanting to ask. The summer riots, press reports of an out-ofcontrol generation and government think-tanks urging legislation to ensure unruly youths parents
are made to pay, have put teenage behaviour in the spot light more than ever. Are we facing an epidemic? Are today’s youngsters an ugly product of our modern consumerist culture? ‘Why do we do this?’ asks the teenage boy, seconds before a deadly car race. ‘You’ve gotta do something, don’t you?’ is his reply. That was Jim Stark (James Dean) in the film Rebel Without a Cause, a film that provided a social commentary on emotionally confused suburban middle-class teenagers. It was made over fifty years ago. So, is it really that bad, being the parent of a teenager? Surely there must be an up-side? Well the answer is yes, and yes. Not all teenagers take risks and not all teenagers are badly behaved. There may be times during the teen years when everything blows up and you fear all is lost. The thing to remember is that for all they pretend that they don’t give a fig for what you think, the truth is that they do. In fact, they give several hundred figs, even though this is something they will never admit. They may be learning to live without us, but they actually need us more than ever. Just remember to listen to them, keep your sense of humour and give them a hug, every day, whether they need it or not. That way you will see them for the funny, intelligent, amazing individuals that they are, with whom you will experience highs more thrilling than any fairground ride. In the words of a very wise old parent I know ‘Don’t worry. The years between 13 and 41 are the worst.’ Thanks Mum. in MAGAZINE 55

WORSHIP STREET WHISTLING SHOP lmost completely without signage, on a dark night it would be easy to miss the entrance to Shoreditch’s subterranean Worship Street Whistling Shop. And a dark night is exactly what this particular cellar bound drinks emporium calls for. Inspired by the gin and inequity dens of Dickensian London, a trot down the dim staircase into the near blackness of its lamp lit and wood panelled lounge makes entry into the Worship Street Whistling Shop feel like an adventure into the Victorian gothic. It even has its own Dr Jekyll style mad scientist laboratory. But rather than monsters, the produce of this particular scientific cubby-hole are experimental and theatrical cocktails. Utilising both technology and a fair bit of inventive thinking The Whistling Shop offers one of the most unusual cocktail lists around. The Exploded Vodka Martini being a particular favourite. As well as libations The Whistling Shop offers Victorian food by The Mussel Men and on selected nights some quite bonkers but surprisingly delicious micro-gastronomy – one dish of which had our table breathing out dry ice like a collection of dragons. Beyond the cutting edge mixology, there is something else rather very exciting about The Whistling Shop. The atmosphere almost seems to crackle with newly discovered electricity. And with sparks like that it is no wonder that The Whistling Shop has fast become one of the most interesting bars in the capital.

hen Volkswagen first announced the ‘up!’ concept, talk was of a rear-wheel drive supermini with a small capacity engine mounted under the rear seats - a master of packaging that could find space in even the smallest, erm... space. But, alas, this was only a concept and as is often the way with these things, the ‘up!’ which will be making it into production is a far more conventional front-engined frontwheel drive package. In fact, its transverse layout was first seen in the Austin Mini. Like the original Mini, the ‘up!’ will be one of the smallest cars on the market, 58 in MAGAZINE

with a stubby nose and chopped off rear-end, shepherding it round city streets should be a doddle. Its wheel-ateach-corner cutesy looks lend the ‘up!’ a certain cheeky charm, which is no doubt enhanced by the VW badge displayed proudly on the grille, and the perceived quality this brings. The ‘up!’ shuns the popular move towards retro styling opting to follow Volkswagen’s penchant for solidity, which is aided by confident crease lines, while the smiley face at the front and smoked glass at the rear, aid the modern, cheeky theme.
that of any other Volkswagen model. So, you can expect a functional dashboard layout with quality feel soft-touch plastics and a logical layout, though large splashes of coloured gloss will mark this as a car aimed at the younger market. The ‘up!’ will also come with an info-pod which can mate with your mobile phone to provide entertainment and navigation, and is detachable. Available for around £350, the info-pod will also double as speedometer and provide useful eco-driving tips. The ‘up!’ will also come with big car features like Urban Safety, which brakes the car to a stop to prevent low-speed collisions of less than 20mph, available for £180.
The inside mirrors the packaging outside; its relatively long wheelbase means the ‘up!’ will feel a lot more spacious than other cars of a similar size. The design of the ‘up!’ follows
AT LAUNCH THE ‘UP!’ WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THREE TRIM LEVELS; TAKE UP, MOVE UP AND TOP SPEC’ HIGH UP. Words by Russell Campbell
BABY FIAT GETS A DESIGNER MAKEOVER AS GUCCI CELEBRATES ITS 90TH ANNIVERSARY. In the year marking the celebration of both the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy and Gucci's 90th anniversary, Gucci and Fiat are proud to unveil the 500 by Gucci, a special edition of the iconic Fiat 500 customised by Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini in partnership with Fiat's Centro Stile.
The ‘up!’ will be launched with 1.0 litre three - cylinder all-alloy, 12-valve engine available in Bluemotion tune of 59bhp with stopstart technology allowing 67.1mpg, or 74bhp standard spec, with 65.5mpg. Both engines will emit less then 100g/km, excluding them from London’s congestion charge. Cleanest engine of all, however, will be an electric model that is penciled in for introduction in 2013. Neither of the launch petrol engines will be fast, but we can expect 0-60mph coming up in around 15 seconds and top speeds of around 100mph. We’re sure this will be delivered in true Volkswagen style and we are told that the controls are light and refinement high, for such a small car; the three – cylinder engine settles down from a distinctive warble at high revs. With direct steering and gear change, it should be fun to throw around city streets and equally easy to park at journey’s end. The front-wheel drive chassis lends the ‘up!’ safe and secure neutral handling with characteristic under-steer, which will gently ward off impending doom, as will noticeable body roll; the pay off, we’re told, for an extremely comfortable ride. Released next January, the ‘up!’ will be priced from £8,000 for the entry level model rising to £12,000 for one with all the goodies. It’s a competitive price for a car that will command the lowest CO2 tax bracket, can circumnavigate London’s congestion charge and that has a three-cylinder engine that literally sips fuel. Combining all these with Volkswagen’s reputation for solid engineering and durability, and we have a car that looks like competitive new entry to the supermini sector and one which can rely on its last-ability to outshine its competitors’. Problem is, for all its cute looks (and apparently it looks even cuter in the metal) the ‘up!’ fails to make us melt in the same way as a Fiat 500 does so effortlessly, which leaves us thinking the ‘up!’ is destined to be a teacher’s town car rather than a teens cohort. Time, we suppose, will tell.
This unique collaboration between two of Italy's most respected brands represents the perfect combination of craftsmanship and style. Launched on the opening day of Milan Fashion Week, the 500 by Gucci was also presented at the Geneva International Auto Show in a dedicated Gucci pop-up store within the Fiat stand. The black and white colours of the 500 by Gucci, in unique eyecatching glossy pearl glass paint complement one another: black, with detailing in shiny chrome paired with interiors that contrast sharp black and white, for a contemporary and racy feel; white, with satin chrome detailing and ivory and black interiors for a softer, sophisticated look. Alongside the car’s launch, Gucci has also created a fashion collection, which includes travel accessories, leather goods, clothes, sunglasses and a watch, which are available in select Gucci stores. Elena Bernardelli, marketing director, Fiat Group Automobiles UK said “The 500 by Gucci will enlarge the audience for the already successful Fiat 500, reaching those fashionista customers who want to have a unique car to distinguish themselves.”
The Fiat 500C by Gucci will also be available in both the 1.2 69BHP and twinair engines, in two unique glossy pearl paints. Available to test drive at Glyn Hopkinin Buckhurst Hill. Call 020 8506 6281 or visit GlynHopkin.com. in MAGAZINE 59

THe OnLy Way IS CHIgWeLL - FOR HIP YOuNG HOME BuYERS
oung and hip house hunters are expected to flock to Chigwell Row this October, as multi-award winning house builder Higgins Homes unveils stylish new apartments at its latest development, Fabrica. Located in the area dubbed the ‘Essex Golden Triangle,’ the launch of off-plan sales at the trendy development is set to coincide with the airing of season three of the popular Essex reality drama, The Only Way Is Essex. Chigwell, made famous by TV shows like Essex Wives and The Only Way Is Essex, is set to attract young people looking to buy their first home among the local ‘jetset’ crowd that has included Sir Alan Sugar, former England captain Bobby Moore, Ashley Cole and comedian Alan Davies. TOWIE’s Mark Wright and Lauren Goodger also live nearby. Jeremy Marcus, Sales and Marketing Director, Higgins Homes, comments:
‘The area around Chigwell has gained prominence in recent years, with TV programmes like The Only Way Is essex putting this leafy town on the map. But it has a lot more to offer than the celebrity factor.’ Fabrica will offer nine contemporary one and two bedroom apartments, two duplex apartments and one three-bedroom, three-storey house. The development will also feature on site parking, single garages and leafy communal gardens. The apartments will be set inside an attractive gabled building, with brick and wood work complementing the natural surrounds. Inside, sophisticated décor will accompany the stylish fixtures and fittings which will include a fabulous integrated kitchen and a chic bathroom. 64 in MAGAZINE
Jeremy adds:
‘Like all Higgins Homes’ properties, the apartments and the three bedroom house at Fabrica will be designed and finished to the highest specifications, reflecting our desire to offer sophisticated living at an affordable price.’ ‘In addition, Chigwell Row is right on the doorstep of the beautiful Hainault Forest Country Park and is approximately a 35 minute commute from the City. The location itself offers the perfect blend of countryside and city living.’ The region around Chigwell has been a popular residential area for many years, even described as ‘the greatest place in the world’ by Charles Dickens,* who regularly visited the town. Much of the architecture that Dickens enjoyed still remains focal to the town centre today and offers residents a beautiful blend of historic and modern day British life. Chigwell Row is ideal for commuters, as nearby Grange Hill Underground Station is on the Central Line and motorists can take advantage of a multitude of road links including the A12, M11 and M25. **
Prices are due for release at October’s launch, while first occupation is scheduled for just before Christmas 2011. For further information please contact Higgins Homes on telephone: 020 8508 6000. * Charles Dickens frequently visited Chigwell, which he described in a letter as "the greatest place in the world... iN Magazine’s Editor, Rose Keen meets up with Guy & Liselle Chisenhale-Marsh, the couple behind Gaynes Park, Epping. ummer is having its last gasp as I arrive at Gaynes Park. This is not my first visit to the Epping estate. I was lucky enough to attend as both a guest at one of their popular wedding tasting evenings and at the Duke of Essex Polo, which is held in the grounds every year. But in the late summer sunshine the historic wedding venue has never looked lovelier.
that can be attributed to Liselle is Gaynes Park’s marketing identity. ‘In the beginning I just did the gardening design,’ Liselle explains, ‘just because I loved gardening. But I knew the kind of thing I wanted to see on our website and the image I wanted for Gaynes Park.’ From there Gaynes Park’s marketing has gone from strength to strength, quickly drawing the attention of not only brides-to-be but the press as well.
Liselle, one half of the matrimonial masterminds behind the beauty of Gaynes meets me in the shingle car park of the venue. Dressed in vintage Matthew Williamson and the sort of sun kissed tan that seems a part of our Antipodean cousins’ genetic makeup, Liselle exudes a welcoming charm that I have no doubt would pacify the most nervous of brides.
For those who have visited Gaynes Park it is no surprise to find that the venue has become a trend setter, something else that is down to Liselle. You can spot her hand, or rather eye, everywhere at Gaynes. From the planters to the chairs in which we now sit, it is her own very good taste that makes Gaynes Park so aesthetically cohesive. ‘I just buy bits all the time and just give Guy the bills,’ she laughs. Whatever it is behind Gaynes Park’s very good looks it is definitely working. It is rare to find a venue with such a sense of harmony. ‘I just find it so peaceful,’ Liselle explains. ‘You would never guess we were on the end of a tube line.’ Indeed, Gaynes Park’s rural idyll has the added virtue of not only great transport connections to London but also sweeping views of the capital’s skyline.
We meet Guy, other half of team behind the beautiful wedding venue, in the Mill Barn - the romantically rustic setting for so many brides and grooms’ wedding feasts. As we settle down for coffee on the barn’s mezzanine level, I ask the pair how is it that they ended up here. ‘(The Estate) has been in my family since the late 1700s,’ Guy enlightens me. ‘So we have been here a long time. But in 1976 my Grandfather sold the mansion house’ (the period property is now being transformed into luxury apartments). Though the house was gone Guy’s grandfather kept the estate. ‘And since then it had just kind of been sitting here. Liselle and I moved to Australia (Liselle’s home country) for a few years. It was over there, whilst considering what I was going to do with my life that it occurred to me the most sensible thing to do would be to come back and see if we couldn’t make the estate come back to life.’ So the family (including the couple’s three children) left the house in Sydney with views 66 in MAGAZINE

of the ocean and moved to a then very muddy Gaynes Park. ‘Much to Liselle’s horror,’ Guy jests. Liselle smiles. ‘The thing is that you can’t wear lots of lovely shoes around the place. I am a city girl at heart and you had to put your Wellington boots on for a walk in the park. That’s what is great about having a wedding venue, you get to dress up and unless you’re going for a walk in the woods, the Wellington boots can stay at home.’ Shoe jokes aside, it is clear that turning Gaynes Park into the success it is today is a serious business for the couple. ‘We were looking for diversification,’ Guy tells me. ‘We were thinking about some sort of amazing spa or restaurant. Eventually Diana Hastie from Country House Wedding Venues visited saying what a fantastic wedding venue it could be.’ It took around three years to transform what was a collection of ageing and listed farm buildings into the desirable boutique wedding venue it is today. Consisting of three buildings: The Orangery, Gather Barn and Mill Barn alongside beautiful grounds and gardens, the metamorphosis of Gaynes Park has been incredible. Something that is no doubt due to Liselle’s breezy stylishness, something else
Watching Guy and Liselle together, it is patently obvious just how in love they are. Perhaps Gaynes Park’s unique combination of city and country serves rather perfectly as a metaphor for the partnership that has made the wedding venue what it is today. ‘I don’t think Gaynes would be the same if we weren’t here,’ Liselle tells me, and quite frankly I could not agree more.
