took me to Camp Keystone—a tent city erected on 45 acres of an old soccer field in Hammond to house the National Guard stationed here just after Hurricane Katrina. It was humbling for me to see how these 1,000 men and women were living. When space in the tents became scarce, some of the “luckier” soldiers were housed across the my community; I think that’s what a great local publication does. It’s so much fun to witness someone’s reaction when they see their face or their story featured in our pages. IN truly is a reflection of the northshore, and I think people love to see that. The most enjoyable story I wrote for IN has to be “Snowbiz.” Steve Faure and I were charged with the enviable task of finding the best snowball on the northshore. One scorching summer day, we traveled the parish to sample snowballs from countless vendors. We found that each stand had their opinion on what makes the best snowball. (Hint: It’s all in the ice!) I must admit I didn’t eat

told those who said there was no poverty in St. Tammany— go walk on such and such street … When the founder of Mandeville, Bernard Marigny, put aside a stretch of lakefront property for public use in perpetuity as he was designing the village in 1815 … Having these stories included in St. Tammany: A Bicentennial Celebration (published by IN in 2010) was even more of a thrill. Thank you, Inside Northside, for the experiences you have given us in the pages of your magazine.
Webb Williams I’ve enjoyed writing for Inside Northside since 2002. Art Director Brad Growden is an incredibly gifted artist whose layouts have always made my articles pop. Editor Jan Murphy gives me creative liberties and lets me fly. But it is the publisher, Lori Murphy, who always inspires me to write about people and topics I love. Her enthusiasm and praise make me want the next article to be better than any before. Houltonville, where I live, was on every map, but there were no city limit signs or any other indications that it ever existed. After months of

CELEBRATING LEADERSHIP As shown in this issue of Decades of Leadership, successful entrepreneurs share many qualities. To be successful for decades, leadership must think outside the box, value the lessons of the past and be open to the challenge of change—while never losing sight of its original purpose. We are fortunate to have so many such leaders on the northshore. We celebrate them in this issue.

If you are looking for a treadmill, Pacemaster offers “the most bang for your buck.” Octane Fitness just recently released the xRide, the world’s first seated elliptical. This machine works the entire body while the user is in a seated position. None of these brands can be found in your typical big box or sporting goods store. At Fitness Expo you can experience these and other leading exercise products for your home or commercial facility. The Rices strive to make Fitness Expo the place to go for all exercise equipment needs. They pride themselves on being specialists in fitness equipment and have built their business by going the extra mile to help the customer select the right piece of equipment at the right price for the individual. DeLuca’s Expressions in Gold Since 1981
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A JEWELER? Integrity, professionalism and customer service are just a few of the things DeLuca’s customers have expected—and received— since 1981. “I want shopping at DeLuca’s to be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for our customers,” says owner Janet DeLuca. “People feel good about the time they spend just looking around the store. We want them to feel at home here.” DeLuca’s has fine jewelry, wedding sets, pendants and earrings. “Our extensive selection of Fossil watches is very popular this year,” says Janet. “‘Rose Gold’ is the most desired color.” DeLuca’s also has an excellent collection of fashion jewelry names such as Chamilia, Lotus, Waxing Poetic and Kameleon. Jewelry repairs are a big part of DeLuca’s business. The laser has enabled them to repair many types of jewelry and even heirloom pieces that were previously not repairable. “We treat each repair as though it is our own,” says store manager Trudy Oalmann. DeLuca’s Signature Engraving System can engrave almost anything—from jewelry to swords and guns. It also etches glass and stamps gold foil on leather, making it the perfect way to personalize gifts. Five years ago, DeLuca’s added a gift gallery filled with home décor and gift items. It’s the perfect place to buy a gift for showers, weddings, birthdays and other memorable occasions—and have it wrapped to go!

After Hours A Musical Night in Provence
Founded in 1991, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra has been enchanting audiences for two decades. Music filled the air once again at “A Musical Night in Provence,” presented by the LPO at La Provence in Lacombe. The evening of food, wine and music supported the LPO’s activities on the northshore. Money raised through this special event will go toward the LPO’s popular concert series in Covington, its education outreach efforts across the northshore and its free park concerts in Slidell, Mandeville and Covington. The event was co-chaired by Lisa Condrey Ward, Maria Davis and Jennifer Rice with help from the LPO’s Northshore Advisory Board, chaired by J. Scott Chotin Jr.
