David Mutter
President, Doerr Furniture
As we kick off this new year, I can’t help but reflect on the monumental journey my family and I just wrapped up: a full-scale, year-long home renovation. We took a 20-year-old house and turned it into something entirely new, a process that brought out the best - and sometimes the worst - in all of us. Let me be clear: if you’re planning a renovation, be prepared for moments when you want to strangle your partner (I say this with love, of course).
The renovation was a rollercoaster of emotions for me - fun, scary, exciting, overwhelming, educational, frustrating, and, ultimately, incredibly rewarding. There were a few “Oh No!” moments (including a cabinet handle battle that I’ll never stop bringing up), but far more “OMG, I love it” moments. Thankfully, we worked with a designer who not only brought our vision to life but also doubled as an impromptu relationship counselor when needed.
The best part? We didn’t just buy a house; we created a home. The result is more than a beautiful design - it’s a home base for a beautiful life, filled with gratitude and love.
This issue focuses on design and health & wellness - two themes that might not seem connected at first glance. But trust me, after surviving a renovation with kids and a partner, you’ll understand how vital health, wellness, and especially mental health are to the process! Here’s to building homes and lives that we love.

is Overcoming Perfection

hen Jenny Gremillion sets her mind to something, she gets it done. A self-proclaimed recovering perfectionist, she can set and achieve goals like nobody’s business—except when it comes to art.
When she stands before a blank canvas, there are no expectations. No goals to accomplish. No objectives to meet. It’s utter freefall—a complete contrast for someone who typically clings to control.
This is how her creativity comes to life. And when it does, it’s a beautiful thing. Many things, in fact. Vibrant, complex, vivid, and beautiful things, which are so often a reflection of life, says the Covington artist, businesswoman, wife, and mother of three.
“I never know where a piece is going or how it will end, but once it lets me know it’s complete, I can often look into it and trace parallels with my life experiences,” Gremillion says.
Those life experiences stem from a childhood spent in Martin, a small town in northwestern Kentucky, when her only affiliation with art was painting her cheer squad’s banners in middle school. They reflect time earning a degree in business at the University of Memphis and then landing a coveted medical device sales position—a job that led her to meet her future husband. They also include the everyday challenges and joys of marriage and motherhood, as well as memories of visiting New York City to see a high school best friend.
Those trips to the Big Apple awakened an appreciation for the grit and glamour of city living. Cityscapes from other travels have also left an impression, often emerging in the abrasive yet smooth feel of her pieces with names like Palm Springs, Santa Monica, and City Lights.
“There’s an irrational juxtaposition of street graffiti and Chanel bags that somehow makes perfect sense,” Gremillion says. “I create abstracts and collages that often end up including text and letters. Sometimes there’s imagery involved. And sometimes you might find a page torn from Vogue layered upon spray paint. I never know where my art will take me.”
She does know, however, that her personal style carries forward influences from her grandmother. As the only granddaughter of Sue Bell, who had only sons, Gremillion shared a special bond with her “Mommom.”
“I remember playing in her closet with all the glamorous clothes and fur coats. She was a fashionista long before that became a thing,” she says. “She always made a statement no matter what she was wearing.”
Hints of this can be found in Gremillion’s avant-garde approach to art, which is both intuitive and authentic but also refined. She was immediately smitten with the intangible expression of emotion that abstract style presents. She began taking classes and learning from professional artists across the country. Drawn to abstract art, she knew she needed to refine her process, so she dove headfirst into the world of abstract art, exploring the works of countless artists online.
“If I found art that I loved, I wanted to learn from the artist,” she says. “The art community is so generous with its talent, with many artists offering in-person workshops and online classes. I want to soak it all up.”
COVER ARTIST
Acclaimed artists like Amira Rahim, Zona Wainwright, Rob Szot, Michael Cutlip, and Aimee Seigel are among her mentors. They guided her growth as an artist, teaching her to incorporate mixed media, from acrylic paint and spray paint to charcoal and oil pastels. She’s also known to use acrylic ink, alcohol inks for splatter effects, and Krink graffiti
markers when creating pieces with an urban vibe.
Although she seems at ease with her inner muse, that wasn’t always the case. Gremillion first found her artistic spark upon moving to the Northshore. When she and her husband moved across the lake, she assumed they’d adopt the more
subdued palette of suburbia and leave behind the louder colors and artwork that graced the walls of their Warehouse District condo. But her husband resisted the drastic shift to a “dreamy neutral theme,” and together found a way to bring the bright colors from his “bachelor pad” days to live with them as they built a family.
As she searched for inspiration online, Gremillion discovered abstract art that took her breath away.
“I said to myself, ‘I want to create that!’” she recalls. And so, she did.
What began in a dusty garage corner moved to a converted bedroom studio, then to a climate-controlled studio/ workshop. As she continued to dive into her newfound passion, people began to pay attention. Personal posts online led to purchases. Just a few years later, she left the corporate world of medical device sales and began her career as an artist.
“I know it’s easy to look at abstract art and think a toddler could paint that,” she says with a laugh. “But, believe me, it’s much more challenging than you think.”
She describes beginning a new piece as “fun, yet absolutely terrifying.” Guided by her mentors, she learned to stretch her creative muscles and let go of control.
“It’s so different than representational art,” she says. “It’s not like looking at an apple and then painting it.”
It’s so different than representational art. It’s not like looking at an apple and then painting it.
Rather than using visual cues to represent reality, abstract artists enlist a constellation of shape, form, color, texture, lines and movement to make their impressions. Abstract painting has been described as the most difficult of all the arts. It requires the artist to own a keen awareness of context and colors, as well as a poetic sensibility.
Gremillion begins her process with what she describes as wild and gestural mark-making on the canvas to “activate” it. This is the part that demands courage. At times she has to walk away for weeks. “I won’t even set foot in the studio,” she says, adding that her creative process can take anywhere from six hours to six months for each work of art.
Eventually, the work reveals itself, and she proceeds. “I have to let the art tell its story,” she says.
Her process includes applying color theory, considering composition, and adding layers of imagery or text as needed. One thing leads to another, and words, imagery and themes sometimes emerge.
How does she know what to include?
“It just belongs there,” she says with a smile.
Much is the same for the role of art in her life these days. It just belongs there. Her search for ways to embrace bold colors coincided with the realization that her life was missing balance. She was restless. Life was becoming more and more stressful. She needed a creative outlet.
Having found hers in the solace of artmaking, she now feels compelled to help others find theirs.

“Women, especially over-achievers, tend to put so much of themselves into everyone and everything else,” she says, “that we often forget to give ourselves any attention.”
She encourages women to prioritize self-care and celebrate their accomplishments. “Looking back can help you realize all that you’ve truly achieved,” she says. “You can use that as motivation to move forward.”
These days, Gremillion juggles her thriving art practice, life coaching, and raising three daughters, each with unique creative talents.
“Art soothes my soul and has brought me happiness,” she says. “I can only hope my art and insights bring happiness to others as well.”

A “chilling” New Year’s tradition, the Ice Man Dip & Dash returns to Franco’s. The Ice Man Dip & Dash is not for the fainthearted, combining a challenging two-mile run to the bridge, a brisk 110-yard ‘ice’ swim across the chilly Tchefuncte River, and a two-mile run back to Franco’s. Thirty-five years ago, Mandeville’s Dr. Fred Miller, Dr. Shannon Allison and Ron Franco met at Franco’s Health Club & Spa for the run of the year. But their path was impeded on the way back when a mechanical malfunction of the Madisonville Bridge prevented them from returning to Franco’s on foot. Instead of becoming stranded on the west side of the Tchefuncte River, the group decided to take “the plunge” into the chilly

Slidell native Alex Geriner is making waves in the world of high-end, handcrafted furniture. In early 2025, Doorman will unveil a new furniture collection that intertwines French postmodernism with the haunting beauty of Southern Louisiana’s swamps and bayous. This collection is more than just furniture; it’s a statement of commitment—to craftsmanship, sustainability, and the preservation of a region deeply affected by climate change. Founder Alex Geriner and his

team have taken their artisan approach to new heights, creatively repurposing waste materials and employing eco-conscious practices in every piece. From the intricate scrap wood tiles of the Marengo Bed to the coconut-fiber upholstery of the Clouet Ottoman, each item is a testament to innovation and a deep connection to place.
“Our mission has always been to create furniture with meaning,” Geriner explains. “I tell my team all the time, we’re building the next generation of antiques. I want our pieces to outlive all of us. This is our legacy.”
The roots of Doorman trace back to 2008, when Geriner moved to New Orleans after studying journalism at Southern Miss with dreams of writing for National Geographic. But fate—and Hurricane Katrina—had other plans. Salvaging old doors from the storm’s aftermath, Geriner began crafting them into headboards, which he sold on Etsy. His creative venture ran parallel to his day job in advertising at Peter Mayer, where he managed campaigns and honed his marketing skills.
DESIGN
“I was working at Peter Mayer and making furniture on the side,” Geriner recalls. “And that really allowed me to hone in on marketing and communications. So between my marketing background and love of design, love of building, and love of creating art, it turned into this flourishing company where I get to use all my different passions.”
By 2015, Geriner was ready to move beyond the Katrina narrative. “Everyone was tired of talking about Katrina,” he says. “It was time to grow beyond that and focus on design.” This pivot to high-end furniture wasn’t without its challenges, but the result is a brand that resonates with discerning clients across the country. Today, most of the furniture goes up the east coast and to Texas, California, Pacific Northwest. Doorman’s refined organic aesthetic appeals to affluent markets in Aspen, Jackson Hole, Big Sky, Boseman, Cayman Islands, the Bahamas and beyond.
The operation remains proudly rooted in New Orleans, with all production taking place in his workshop in Algiers. Inside, the workshop hums with purpose. Ten employees move around the space in a coordinated shuffle, cutting, sanding, staining, and assembling. Investments in advanced machinery have streamlined the process, reducing production time significantly. What once took 10 hours of hand-sanding can now be completed in a fraction of the time, allowing the team to produce more pieces and continue growing while still focusing on the intricate details that set Doorman’s pieces apart.
Set just outside the workshop, pieces like the Amelia Pedestal await their final touches. Solid wood carved into elegant forms speaks to the craftsmanship at the heart of Doorman. Geriner’s commitment to local sourcing extends beyond the wood itself—even the delivery process is handled by local drivers who provide white-glove service across the country.
“If there’s a problem, they can touch it up or fix it on the spot,” Geriner notes. “Everything about what we do is as local as possible.”
This dedication to quality and locality resonates with customers who crave more than mass-produced furniture. As a culture, there was a time when throwaway, fast-fashion furniture dominated the market. But in Louisiana, the appreciation for fine furniture—pieces with a story and legacy—has always been a part of our culture. Today, that sentiment is once again spreading across the country as people increasingly seek out handmade furniture built to last for generations. This shift aligns perfectly with Doorman’s philosophy and commitment to creating enduring, meaningful pieces.
Doorman’s creations are designed to become the heirlooms of tomorrow, pieces with a story and a provenance that future generations will treasure. Whether it’s the Marengo Bed, the Basin Barstool, or the Teche Dining Table, each item reflects the brand’s ethos: sustainability, craftsmanship, and a connection to the culture and materials of the South.
While Doorman’s reach extends nationwide, Geriner remains deeply tied to his roots in Slidell and the Gulf Coast. “This is home,” he says simply. It’s a sentiment that permeates the entire operation. From the reclaimed wood that formed the foundation of their early pieces to the drivers delivering furniture to far-flung locales, Doorman’s identity is unmistakably Southern.
“Everything about what we do is as local as possible.”
As the new collection prepares to launch, Geriner and his team look to the future with optimism and purpose. “We’re excited to share this new line,” he says. “It’s inspired by the places we love and the values we hold dear. It’s a celebration of sustainability and creativity, and we hope it resonates with people who appreciate furniture that’s as meaningful as it is beautiful.”
In a world increasingly defined by disposability, Doorman serves as a symbol of enduring quality and thoughtful design. Each piece tells a story—of the craftsmen who built it, the materials that shaped it, and the lasting impression it will leave behind. As Geriner puts it, “We’re not just making furniture; we’re making a legacy.”

Livio Designs stands out by blending innovative products with a client-first approach. By maintaining direct relationships with top manufacturers and distributors, they secure high-quality materials for clients while saving them time and money. “We’re always searching for the best and most innovative products to bring to our clients,” said Lauren Yarbrough, Director of Design.
Livio’s offerings are diverse, including Livio Outdoors, a division that imports unique items from around the world. Their 12,000-square-foot outdoor living showroom allows them to design seamless indoor-to-outdoor transitions, and they even have a metal fabrication team to custom-build any design element that can’t be sourced.
Livio’s work spans everything from new construction to renovations, collaborating closely with homeowners, builders, subcontractors, architects, and landscape architects. “We specialize in project management, making sure everyone is on the same page and working toward the same goals,” Yarbrough explained. With 20 years of experience, the team has honed their ability to foresee and avoid potential issues, thanks to strong relationships with trusted tradespeople. This
expertise is applied equally to large-scale projects and smaller redesigns, from single rooms to entire homes.
When it comes to design, Livio is all about the client. “My designs are absolutely driven by my client’s lifestyle, wants, needs, and personal style,” Yarbrough said. “Whether a client’s taste is traditional, modern, or somewhere in between, we make sure the design reflects their unique vision.”
The team takes pride in every project, but recent renovations stand out. “It’s incredible to watch a house transform completely and come to new life,” Yarbrough shared. She encourages clients to involve Livio early in the process, whether for new construction or a simple room refresh. “No project is too big or too small,” she emphasized, “and we’re here to save you time, money, and the headaches of costly mistakes.”

The New Aesthetic What’s Driving Design in 2025
As we move into 2025, interior design continues to evolve, reflecting shifts in lifestyle, technology, and the global environment. This year’s trends are all about creating spaces that are functional, sustainable, and deeply personal.
1. Biophilic Design: Bringing Nature Indoors
Biophilic design is no longer a niche concept. Homes are embracing living walls, indoor plants, and natural materials like wood, stone, and clay, which harmonize well with the Northshore’s lush, natural environment.
What’s New? Vertical gardens with self-watering systems are becoming more affordable, making them accessible to a wider audience. Additionally, terracotta tiles and limewash finishes are gaining popularity for their earthy, organic feel and ability to keep spaces cool.
Why It’s Trending: Post-pandemic, people are prioritizing wellness, and integrating nature into home design fosters a sense of calm and connection to the outdoors.
2. Mixed Metals: Layered Elegance
The era of matchy-matchy finishes is over. Designers are now layering metals - brass, chrome, matte black, and even gunmetal - to add depth and sophistication.
Where to Use It: Kitchen fixtures, lighting, and furniture frames. For example, pairing brass cabinet hardware with a matte black faucet creates an edgy yet timeless look.
Pro Tip: Stick to no more than three metal finishes in a single space.
3. Warm Minimalism: Less but Cozier Minimalism isn’t about stark, cold spaces anymore. The 2025 version incorporates warm tones, textured fabrics, and cozy elements that make simplicity inviting.
Key Elements: Neutral palettes with warm undertones (think beige, taupe, and caramel), soft boucle chairs, and curved furniture lines.
Why It Works: It offers the uncluttered aesthetic of minimalism without sacrificing comfort, making it perfect for multi-functional spaces like home offices and living rooms.
4. Statement Ceilings: The Fifth Wall Designers are turning their focus upward, transforming ceilings into focal points. From bold colors to intricate paneling, ceilings are becoming works of art.
What’s Popular: Coffered ceilings painted in rich tones, textured wallpapers, and decorative plasterwork. For a modern touch, consider LED lighting embedded into ceiling designs.
How to Incorporate: Use a complementing color or pattern to make a space feel cohesive.
5. Color Trends: Earthy Tones and Rich Hues
Color in 2025 reflects a need for grounding and balance. While neutrals remain popular, they’re being complemented by deep, saturated tones.
Palette Highlights: Rich greens like olive and moss, terracotta, and golden ochre. For accents, jewel tones like emerald and sapphire are making a comeback.
Best Uses: Pair earthy tones with natural materials for a cohesive look, or use rich hues to create a dramatic feature wall.
6. Outdoor Living: Year-Round Enjoyment
The boundary between indoor and outdoor living continues to blur. Homeowners are investing in outdoor spaces that are as comfortable and stylish as their interiors.
Trending Features: Outdoor kitchens, retractable screens, and weather-resistant furniture. Fans and mosquito-repellent landscaping are must-haves for comfort.
What’s New: Heated patios and motorized pergolas extend usability into cooler months.
Finding Perfection in Imperfection
Ceramic Sculptor, Denise Greenwood Loveless
By Mimi Knight Photographer - Robyn Arouty Studios
Denise Greenwood Loveless always considered herself an artist. As early as elementary school, she knew art was one thing she could do—and do well. But like many artsy souls, she didn’t consider art a viable career option. Careers were more practical and predictable, at least according to her conservative upbringing.
Even when she “moxied” her way into a career as an art director in the movie industry—a field where she happily
worked for 32 years—Greenwood Loveless still did her art on the side. At the time, she was a self-taught metalsmith designing and building jewelry from silver and semi-precious stone. While her film gig paid the bills, she managed to get her jewelry into a few local galleries, where it was enthusiastically received. When she commissioned some jewelry to a wardrobe designer to be used in films, the women working with the designer eagerly bought most of her pieces once filming was done.
But things took an unexpected turn for Greenwood Loveless when she acquiesced to a friend’s repeated requests to visit another friend’s ceramic studio. After just a few minutes with her hands in clay, she didn’t so much choose a career in art as it chose her.
“I made about eight little heads, and I was completely smitten,” she said. She purchased some clay of her own, made arrangements to have her pieces fired, and began working in realism whenever
she could steal time away from her film work. It wasn’t long before she invested in her first kiln, but something didn’t feel right. To explain what happened next, Greenwood Loveless employs a favorite Picasso quote: “It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.”
Finding Her Voice
Over the next two decades, Greenwood Loveless searched for and found her own voice in clay.
“There are a lot of people doing realism and doing it well,” she said. “But I came to realize I’m happiest in the place where whimsy and fun meet edgy and dark. That’s what has always fascinated me. I want to explore the place
where opposites must bump into each other—the place where light meets dark and grotesque meets beautiful.”
Thus was born a body of work that celebrates the human condition with all its quirks and imperfection, frailty, and vulnerability.
“I really fight ‘cute’ in my work, and I sometimes still hear it described that way. But I want my work to send the message that beauty and ‘perfection’ aren’t one-size-fitsall. We’re all beautiful, and we’re all perfect—even with our imperfections. We are perfectly imperfect.”
Judging from the collectors around the country clamoring for her work, Greenwood Loveless isn’t the only one fascinated by these juxtapositions. That career she never dreamed could be a career now has her working in her St. Gabriel studio seven days a week to keep up with the orders coming in from art galleries in Louisiana, Texas, California, Florida, Mississippi, and Massachusetts. She
ships to private collectors as far away as Hungary, Istanbul, Italy, and Brazil and fulfills orders for commissioned work.
She’s also been juried into top art festivals around the country and has garnered Best in Show awards from the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, the Arts Festival of Oklahoma, Fest for All in Baton Rouge, Yellow Leaf in St. Francisville, and others. Although she works in series, each piece is one of a kind, primarily made of ceramic, but she often incorporates other elements such as metal, wood, neoprene, and fiberglass.
An Unexpected Muse
As Greenwood Loveless communes with her droopy-eyed, pouty-lipped, bulbous-nosed creations, she has little doubt where and when her inspiration was born.
“Growing up with a severely handicapped brother offered my siblings and me a different concept of what is beautiful and what is perfect,” she said. “My brother, Ken, is perfect and beautiful because he is what he was born to be. Growing up with Ken, my siblings and I were given this incredible gift of understanding what is beauty and what is perfection. And it’s not what Vogue magazine or Hollywood says it is. We get to decide.”
That’s a message Greenwood Loveless eagerly takes into schools, where she volunteers to speak to classes about art—and life.
“I talk to them about how everything on our body we have two of—eyes, ears, arms, legs—we have one bigger than the other. There’s no such thing as perfection. Beauty is found in our imperfections. And at a time when we have 14-year-olds with eating disorders, kids need to hear that message.”
FEATURE
Meeting Her Audience
Greenwood Loveless knows her work isn’t for everyone, and she’s OK with that. In fact, when she and her husband, Jimmy, bring her work to art shows around the country, she says they can spot their customers even before they enter the booth.
“Jimmy will say, ‘You better get ready. Here she comes.’ And I’ll look up to see what I know will be my customer,” Greenwood Loveless laughs. “But we’ve also had people walk in the booth and say, ‘Weird.’ That’s OK. Love it or hate it, but at least I made you feel something.”
For now, she’s hard at work in her backyard studio, watching to see where she and the clay will head next.
She’s begun accepting students—both adults and kids—and says she really enjoys the social aspect of teaching.
And she never wants to forget just how lucky she is.
“I never want to take for granted that I’m sitting here with my hands in clay doing what I love, and I get to call this a job,” Greenwood Loveless said. “I always say, when I die, they’ll have to pry the clay from my cold, dead hands because my dream is to die right here in my studio at 102 doing the thing I love.”
From Vision to Victory: How Cameron Martin is Redefining Wellness
e sat down with local fitness influencer and trainer, Cameron Martin of The Martin Method to talk about his approach to achieving optimal health and wellness through fitness, nutrition, and mindset. With years of experience as a coach, athlete, and wellness advocate, Cameron Martin developed this method to empower individuals of all levels to unlock their full potential. Whether your goal is to build strength, enhance athletic performance, or lead a healthier lifestyle, his expertise and results-
driven approach set the foundation for long-term success and transformation.
What was the turning point in your personal fitness journey that led you to develop The Martin Method?
I am someone who has always enjoyed fitness, but I was frustrated with my inability to stick to it. For 12 years, I would work out consistently for a few months, and then completely fall off.
I mentioned to my wife, Leanna, that I was considering starting a personal health and fitness journey and documenting it on Instagram to hold myself accountable. I was scared of the judgment for being “that guy who is posting his workouts online”, but she reminded me to not worry about what anyone else thought. I would have never had the confidence to do this without her. From there, I just started posting, and I didn’t stop.
All of my workouts were done from home, so when COVID hit in 2020, people began using my page as a resource while gyms were closed. At the end of 2020, Leanna and I had our first daughter (we have 3 now). I continued to document my journey as a young father staying fit, while I was working fulltime as a VP of Operations for Marucci Sports in Baton Rouge, commuting an hour each way. As my page continued to grow, people began reaching out to me for guidance. That is when I realized I could help people like myself. This was the start of The Martin Method Training.
What inspired you to create The Martin Method, and how has the mission evolved over time?
This generation understands how critical health and fitness are, but they are busier than ever. For this reason, I began offering 25-minute follow-along workouts on Patreon. While helpful, I realized there is so much more to this: nutrition, sleep, recovery, programming, hydration, and accountability.
This is where The Martin Method really took shape. I began working with clients 1:1, providing them with custom workout plans, nutritional guidance and direct support tailored to the client’s specific goals, schedule and equipment access. This is where my team and I are today.
How has your personal fitness journey influenced the design of The Martin Method?
Originally, my personal fitness journey was the lens by which I coached and designed the majority of my programming. As I grew as a coach and took on more clients, I realized that my
clients would be much better served by a team of coaches rather than just myself.
Currently, there are 7 coaches on staff, including myself. Sydnie Sandwell is the head coach, and she is a strength trainer with a specialization in pelvic floor rehab. My wife, who has given birth to our 3 daughters between 2020-2024, began working with Sydnie and has fallen in love with the process. (Don’t tell her I told you that. She still tries to claim she doesn’t like working out). She is now fitting into clothes that she wore before her first pregnancy, and I have never seen her so confident in her body. It is a truly inspiring thing.
We also have specialists in mobility, hybrid training, nutrition coaching, traditional and unconventional strength training, as well as mindset and healthy habit experts. I believe that health and fitness success is best accomplished by a personalized approach, and our goal is to deliver that with a qualified team across various disciplines.
How does your training approach differ from other fitness programs?
There will always be a functional aspect to the programming that we design for clients. This means that we include exercises that not only build muscle and strength, but also place an emphasis on balance, core stability, mobility, and power. These are the training components that lead to people walking around feeling strong and capable in real-life situations.
How has being a parent influenced your approach to fitness coaching?
As a parent, we are thrown curveballs daily, and we need to be flexible and adapt. We also need to realize that we will not be perfect in our efforts to adhere to a fitness program. I talk about it all the time, but one of the major pitfalls I coach my clients to avoid is the “All or Nothing” mindset. Some people get discouraged when life is not allowing them to adhere to their plan 100%. When we can accept that setbacks are just part of the process, everything changes. Sometimes it’s okay to only get 50% of your workout done. This mindset is progress, not perfection. Your only goal is not to give up on yourself.
FEATURE
How do you structure your program to cater to busy professionals and parents?
Once we bring a client on board, we get to know their schedule and fitness level through a series of questions. From there, we work with them on designing a plan that allows fitness to seamlessly integrate into their lives. This means that length of workout sessions, frequency per week, and equipment used are all modified for each client.
Can you share some success stories from clients and how your program impacted their lives?
We have coached hundreds of clients and delivered countless physical transformations. However, the most meaningful success stories come from the quality of life improvements. Many of our clients join the program to be active and present with their
children. My goal is to help them create a body that never holds them back from making a memory–whether it is hiking, swimming or biking with their kids.
One story in particular that comes to mind is from a client who goes on an annual mountain trip with his family. He loves the trip, but he always dreaded the thought of the long mountain hike they take every year. He dreaded it because of how difficult it was, and he always was the last to finish. After working with us for 6 months, he set off on his annual vacation, and sent me some photos at the end of the hike. Not only did he enjoy it, but he ended up getting to the top of the hill first. He was so proud of himself. That was an awesome moment.
How do you manage to keep clients engaged and committed long-term?
This is something that we address with short-term goals and progress tracking. By breaking big goals into actionable steps–like replacing water or calorie-dense snacks with protein-packed ones–clients see progress without becoming
overwhelmed. Will we win every day? No, but that’s not the goal.
Weekly check-ins track performance and celebrate “non-scale victories” like better sleep, increased energy, and improved confidence. As progress compounds, motivation grows.
What
are the most rewarding aspects of your
work?
I absolutely love seeing people surprise themselves with how capable they are. There is a lot of uncertainty when beginning a journey of self-improvement. We are capable of so much more than we know, and I love seeing that realization happen in real time with my clients.
Who or what inspires you to keep pushing your own fitness boundaries?
I had a football coach growing up who pushed my teammates and me harder than we would have ever pushed ourselves. It was in these summers leading up to football season that I realized we have more in the tank than we thought. This meant so much to me because it was proof that my limit is always further than I originally thought, and this is something I take with me into any endeavor.
I hired someone to coach me as well. This is how much I believe in having a coach. I think a lot of us get stuck in a maintenance phase of life and forget that we need to keep striving to get better. A coach is a teammate whose job it is to bring out what you are truly capable of, and I think we can all benefit from one. Not only does this lead to physical change, but I have noticed that as I continue to push myself, I am finding that taking on new challenges is becoming easier in all areas of life.
What are you listening to during your own personal sessions to keep yourself motivated?
I have done so many workouts that I have listened to everything! When I’m really needing a push though, I always fall back to 2000’s Lil Wayne.
If you could give your younger self one piece of fitness or life advice, what would it be?
I often remind myself that I am on my own journey, and I can go at my own pace. At times, I used to find myself comparing my fitness progress to others and wondering why I was not progressing as quickly as them. If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be “Learn from others, but focus on you”.
How do you unwind or recharge after a long day of coaching and training?
We are kept extremely busy by our 3 wonderful daughters, Eva (4), Ella (3), and Olivia (1). We love unwinding by spending time with both sets of grandparents who live in Mandeville. We also love visiting with my two younger brothers as well, one of which has 2 daughters! I also love to hang out with friends and play golf.
As much as training is my job, it is also my passion. What has been really cool lately is that my wife is joining me in the garage and working out with me. This has brought a whole new level to our connection as we are both working hard at something and trying to improve. To me, it honestly means everything as she is sharing my passion with me.
I often see clients who are very successful in other areas of their life want to immediately bring that same level of success into their health and fitness journey. Theseare what I call my “high achievers”. My first piece of advice to them is to set realistic expectations based on the amount of control we have over our environment and situation. For example, when you are at home, you have a lot of control. You control what is being cooked for dinner. You control the fitness equipment you have access to or the gym you belong to. You control whattime you go to sleep. You control how active you are.For this reason, we can expect ourselves to find some success when we are at home in control, but as we all know, this is not always the case. We have to learn how to navigate social gatherings, vacations, family/friends coming over, kids’ sporting events, etc. These are situations that we do not have total control over, and this can become very frustrating for the high achiever, as this is a tough situation to find a win. This is when we need to re-align our expectations and remember that balance is our key to sustainability. When we are faced with situations outside of our control, we enjoy them and do the best we can. Over time, you will start to find that when you continue to find wins at home and practice balance everywhere else, progress continues to be made.

The new St. Tammany Health System Surgery Center, at 16282 Louisiana 1085 in Covington, was designed with the input of local surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, surgical techs and other care providers to meet the current and future demand for same-day surgeries.
STHS CUTS RIBBON ON STATE-OF-THE-ART SAME-DAY SURGERY CENTER
The Northshore welcomed the next generation of local healthcare with the grand opening of the new St. Tammany Health System Surgery Center, a $75 million, same-day surgical facility described as the most technologically advanced of its kind in the Gulf South.
Located adjacent to the health system’s Paul D. Cordes Outpatient Pavilion on Louisiana 1085 (Bootlegger Road), the 126,000-square-foot facility was designed with local surgeons’ input to meet the current and future demand for same-day surgeries, which is in turn fueled by technological advances that have expanded the number of procedures available in the 23-hour arena.
“Just more than two weeks ago, on Dec. 1, we celebrated our health system’s storied 70-year past. Today, with the opening of this peerless facility, we celebrate the future,” health system President and CEO Joan Coffman said at a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“This surgery center has long been a strategic goal of ours, and I am brimming with gratitude for all those people – and, trust me, there are a lot of them – who helped us to once more deliver on our promise of providing world-class healthcare close to home for our Northshore friends and neighbors.”
In addition to creating more than 100 local jobs, the surgery center’s completion will also open capacity at St. Tammany Parish Hospital for more complex surgical cases.
The location of the center, adjacent to the Outpatient Pavilion, augments the health system’s already robust presence along the Highway 21 corridor, creating a true west campus.
At their ribbon cutting event in mid-December 2024, Joan Coffman, President and CEO of St. Tammany Health System, invited guests to tour the new facility, which includes 12 surgery suites, 24 private pre-op rooms, 18 recovery rooms and 15 rooms with overnight-stay capabilities. They are joined by a host of supporting departments and services including pre-operative and post-operative care, surgical sterilization, imaging, lab, pharmacy, physical therapy, food service, environmental services and more.
“Some buildings are a monument to architecture. This surgery center, which is among the most technologically advanced of its kind in the region, is also a monument to cutting-edge healthcare,” STHS Chief Medical Officer Dr. Patrick Torcson said. “From the robotic systems
that will assist our surgeons; to the advanced surgical instrument processing equipment installed therein; to the robust IT presence throughout, every square inch of this building incorporates technology and innovation on a scale unmatched in the community.”
Among the procedures to be performed at the center starting in January 2025 will be an array of pediatric and adult general surgeries, including orthopedic and gynecological procedures; hand surgery; ear, nose and throat surgery; breast reconstruction; and a wide array of others.
Assisting local surgeons in those procedures will be some of the most state-of-the-art surgical equipment available, including the Da Vinci robotic surgical assistant, which is
used in pelvic and urologic surgeries; and the Stryker Mako system, used in knee and hip replacements.
Additionally, all wet areas – including patient bathrooms –are equipped with patented Indigo-Clean lighting, which use visible light to kill a wide variety of viruses and bacteria.
Similar leading-edge technology is in use throughout the building.
“But it is important to remember that none of this would be possible if not for the human beings behind it all,” health system Vice President of Surgical Services Nancy Ledet said. “For us, that includes a passionate and dedicated surgical team, the members of which played crucial roles in ensuring this new facility not only meets but exceeds the already-high standards of St. Tammany Health System.”
St. Tammany Health Foundation’s Healing Arts Initiative has additionally outfitted the first-floor space with multiple installations, including a large-scale lobby mural by local artist Zac Maras. Other installations feature the work of local artists Cindi Guillot, Inga Falterman and Craig McMillan.
Conveniently located less than two miles south of St. Tammany Parish Hospital, the health system’s flagship 281-bed acute care facility, the St. Tammany Health System Surgery Center will employ 123 people when fully staffed. That number will include a roundthe-clock presence from the health system’s anesthesiology department.
Clinical capabilities planned for the center and scope of the project are being developed according to national best practices for high reliability, efficiency and safety for patients, STHS team members, visitors and vendors.

Wake Up and Read the Labels!
Mandeville resident Jen Smiley, creator of The Label Letter and founder of Wake Up and Read the Labels, is helping thousands of individuals conquer fatigue, skin issues, stubborn weight, and much more through her innovative, sustainable, and, most importantly, simple approach to eating clean.
Jen believes that real food is medicine and attributes many of the struggles people face daily to the fake ingredients hidden in seemingly “healthy” foods. She not only sheds light on the food industry’s deceptive marketing tactics but also offers proven solutions and recommendations for nearly every product imaginable. This allows people to enjoy their favorite foods—free of restriction and guilt— while still feeling their best.
“I help people discover what’s really inside their food,” Jen explains. “Diets aren’t sustainable. Plus you’re never really happy and honestly, where’s the fun in that? My goal is to educate people about the choices they make in the food industry. With simple swaps—like better ketchups, mayos, flours, or oils—you can still enjoy the foods you love and feel your best. When you feel good, you look even better. Who doesn’t want that?”
Jen’s clients often experience life-changing results: reduced inflammation, relief from joint pain, freedom from IBS symptoms, better sleep, glowing skin, weight loss, no bloating, and newfound energy—eliminating the need for that second cup of coffee..
Through digital products, apps, and The Label Letter, Jen provides clean grocery store swaps and easy recipes, making healthy eating accessible to everyone.
Jen’s journey began when a family member was diagnosed with prostate cancer and needed to lose 30 pounds in three months before robotic surgery. He asked Jen for help.
“I went to the grocery store and stocked up on all the foods he loved, but without the junk ingredients. He texted me everything he ate and even sent photos of restaurant menus for me to recommend the cleanest meals,” she recalls.
Not only did he lose 35 pounds, but his blood pressure and cholesterol improved so much that he no longer needed medication. Most remarkably, his prostate numbers declined when they should have increased.
“That’s when I realized I had a secret that could genuinely change people’s lives,” Jen says.
5 Clean Swaps
Dave’s Killer Bread
While this bread advertises nuts and seeds, it’s primarily made of gluten, which contains fructans that make your brain crave sugar and keep you hungry. Additionally, it has 27 times more omega-6 than omega-3 fatty acids, contributing to inflammation.
Swap it with: Pacha Bread, made with organic sprouted buckwheat and sea salt. Buckwheat is rich in B vitamins, resistant starch, and dietary fiber, promoting digestion and relieving constipation.
Canola Oil
Canola oil is high in omega-6 fatty acids and often used in American diets, along with sunflower, soybean, and grapeseed oils. Grilled entrées at restaurants are typically coated in these oils, leaving you feeling puffy and bloated.
Use instead: Avocado oil or extra virgin olive oil. Both are anti-inflammatory and won’t cause bloating.
Almond and Oat Milk
While popular, many almond and oat milks are packed with seed oils, emulsifiers, and preservatives that can wreak havoc on your body. Oats, in particular, are high in omega-6 fatty acids, spike blood sugar more than ice cream, and contribute to bloating.
Swap this for this
FEATURE
Choose: Clean coconut, cashew, flax, pistachio, or almond milks with simple ingredients: water, nuts, and salt.
Protein Bars
Brands like Think Thin, Luna, and Clif are loaded with unrecognizable ingredients that your body struggles to process. If you don't recognize an ingredient, neither does your body. These bars keep you bloated and fatigued.
Opt for: Bearded Brothers, Larabar, or Thunderbird Bars. Made with simple, whole ingredients, they’re easy for your body to recognize and digest.
Wine
Here in Louisiana, we love a good glass of wine on the porch. But the headache, joint aches, and flushed skin that follow aren’t due to your age or allergies - they’re caused by additives. The FDA allows up to 78 additives in wine. Do you ever wonder why your wine tastes the same year after year? It’s because these additives provide for a consistent “trademark flavor”.
Pick: Organic wines with no added sulfites. European wines are an excellent choice due to stricter regulations and fewer additives.
Final Thought
“It’s not your age or stress level making you feel bad - though we could all use more sunlight, exercise, and less stress. It’s what you eat every day,” Jen says. “You can choose to either feed or fight disease. The food industry hides harmful ingredients and distracts you with calorie counts. But with simple changes, you can overcome inflammation and feel amazing. Eat simple. Feel good.”

HIGHLIGHTING PHILANTHROPY ON THE NORTHSHORE
Our partners at the Northshore Community Foundation exist to make it easy for each of us to make a difference in our own backyard. In their 18th year, the Foundation has touched over $80 million dollars in philanthropic fuel, focusing on simplifying, organizing, and magnifying philanthropy at every turn. The Foundation has reached those remarkable numbers through three primary ways. First, they engage hundreds of individuals, families, companies, and nonprofits in a membership model that promotes
Corporate Advised Fund: Lead. Build. Serve. Kent Design Build embodies these principles by making a meaningful impact through philanthropy with a Corporate Advised Fund at the Foundation. This giving tool allows Kent Design Build to support initiatives that align with their values, create annual grant programs for community needs, o r invest in projects that inspire growth and opportunity.
active connections and charitable work. Secondly, they take the paperwork out of “doing good” by administering funds that act as charitable checkbooks for any purpose. Lastly, they step into big roles when the need is great – especially in times of disaster. Through these three unique and critical roles, the Northshore Community Foundation uses its expertise and resources to magnify the incredible charitable work so prevalent in our region. Below is a sample of the good people and projects that are changing lives every day on the Northshore.
Fund: The Louisiana Travel Association utilizes a Field of Interest Fund at NCF to empower the next generation of Louisiana’s hospitality leaders. By supporting education, school programs, and aspiring professionals, the fund bridges the gap between learning and industry, creating opportunities for innovation and excellence in tourism.
“Through this fund, we are investing in the future of Louisiana’s hospitality industry, ensuring it thrives for generations to come,” says Chris Landry, President & CEO of the Louisiana Travel Association.
Advised Fund: A Foundation fundholder leveraged their Donor Advised Fund to support Holy Family Hospitality Hermitage, where Sister Theresa Berlin has been a cornerstone of the Covington West 30’s community for nearly three decades. Donor Advised Funds offer a flexible and impactful way for individuals to support causes they care about, like Sister Berlin’s mission of fellowship, shared meals, and community support. “If we have it, and we can spare it, we do something a little more special,” she says.
A Season of Giving: The Greater Mandeville Police Foundation’s Holiday Gifting Event
This past December, the Greater Mandeville Police Foundation (GMPF) once again brought the community together to spread joy and support local families. On Saturday, Dec. 14, the GMPF hosted its annual Holiday Gifting Event at the Mandeville Lions Club, providing gifts to more than 300 children and making the season a little brighter for everyone involved.
The day before the big event, volunteers from the Mandeville High School National Guard and GMPF supporters stepped up to help, organizing toys, setting up the space and making sure everything was perfect. Trey Yuen, a beloved local restaurant, made sure the hardworking team stayed fueled, generously providing lunch for the volunteers.
Founded in 2008, the GMPF has grown into a vital part of the 4th Ward of St. Tammany Parish, stepping in to meet community needs and continuing the holiday tradition originally started by the Mandeville Police Department. With the help of partners like Mandeville Fire EMS, the GMPF ensures that families in need are not forgotten during the holidays.
This year’s event was made even more special with a moment of recognition. Tommy Wong, owner of Trey Yuen, was honored for his dedication and ongoing support of the GMPF. The success of the Holiday Gifting Event relies on the generosity of local businesses and individuals throughout the year. Donations fund the purchase of toys, games, and gifts, and every contribution—big or small—helps make an impact.
Looking ahead, the GMPF has already set a date for next year’s event: Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025. Donations can be made
anytime by check, payable to the Greater Mandeville Police Foundation, and sent to 1580 West Causeway Approach, Suite 2, Mandeville, LA 70471.
To learn more about GMPF’s work or how you can get involved, contact Lori Rase, president, at 985-705-2026 or Shelby LaSalle Jr., treasurer and assistant secretary, at 504-4945558 and follow the Greater Mandeville Police Foundation on Facebook for updates and ways to give back.
