WELCOME TO JEFFERSON PARISH

A Message from the Jefferson Convention & Visitors Bureau, Inc.

Dear Travelers:

Welcome to Jefferson Parish! The Jefferson Convention & Visitors Bureau, Inc. is delighted that you have selected Jefferson Parish for your visit to Louisiana. Jefferson Parish offers a variety of attractions, activities, cuisine and experiences. As travel rebounds our destination’s commitment to hospitality, authentic experiences and fond memories remains steadfast. Our partners in tourism are ready to welcome you. As the state’s largest parish, sprawling over sixty miles from the Gulf of Mexico to the shores of beautiful Lake Pontchartrain, we are also the most diverse. We invite you to step back in time exploring our historic districts each representative of our heritage and the cultural influences of the region. Delight your taste buds along our Louisiana Oyster Trail where the oyster is a delicacy whether charbroiled or deep-fried. Shop our beautiful tree-lined Metairie Road boutiques, revel in the hustle and bustle of modern malls, or stroll along quaint farmers, fisheries, and art markets for your special keepsake.

No visit to southeast Louisiana is complete without a trip to Cajun scenic hideaways and swamps. The tranquility of the moss-draped cypress trees and blooms of the Louisiana iris is equally matched by the thrill of an airboat ride

through the bayous. Kick off your shoes and dance the Cajun two-step to the sounds of the zydeco or fiddle. Visit with the locals learning the traditions and intrigue of this picturesque region.

Festivals abound in Jefferson Parish. Come celebrate life, culture, music, carnival, cuisine and more at one of our year-round festivals. From the pageantry of carnival to the Cajun, German, and Italian heritage of our neighborhoods, immerse yourself in our culture and traditions.

Fishing and outdoor recreation is a way of life in Louisiana and Jefferson Parish is no exception. Offering inland and off-shore fishing, a national park & preserve, and two state parks featuring camping, paddling, nature and bird watching trails, and seven miles of sandy beach for fun in the sun on Grand Isle, we’ve got the great outdoors covered!

We invite you to enjoy all we have to offer. Whether you’re planning a family vacation, adventurous get-away, or a business trip, Jefferson Parish offers you all the comforts, entertainment and amenities to make your stay memorable.

Happy Travels, Violet Peters

ENJOY THE VIEUX

Jefferson Parish spans a bit over 665 square miles of Louisiana landscape. It is home to multiple cities & towns that fill the parish with art; encompassing murals, monuments, museums & Artscapes… along with natural backdrops that lend any artistic imagination to want to pick up a pen, or a camera or at minimum embrace a moment of raw beauty.

The first step is knowing where to find art

in Jefferson Parish, but the most important part is to make sure you (& your krewe) keep your eyes open to it because it’s up, and down and all around us here. Phones & excessive technology give us the ability to find whatever we want on the internet, thru what someone else has discovered or written about, but the ability to see art IN the moment, IN wherever you are, whatever you are doing or whatever places you

go is the true treasure. That is the beauty of art… finding it, seeing it, sharing it, and experiencing tingly moments of wonder when you know you’ve found something truly astounding, educational, inspirational, or just dang pretty.

Art makes us think; makes us pause. In the spirit of Louisiana exploration and adventure when you span the artistic canvas available to you within Jefferson Parish there’s no doubt, you’ll discover what feeds your artistic soul. Oh, but where to start: It makes sense to begin in Kenner, Louisiana (Jefferson Parish’s largest incorporated city) since it’s home to the majestic & brandspanking-new Louis Armstrong International Airport. The moment you enter the airport terminal or come down the stairs after you’ve

flown in, you’ll see the massive glass-sealed Treewall image that is part of a “Trees in the Fog” collection by local Louisiana photographer: Lana Gramlich. This peek into a moment of foggy trees in the Louisiana landscape demonstrates the beauty of what is there to be discovered. The drippy trees seem to embrace us here in their foggy allure, welcoming all the travelers to Southeast Louisiana.

Outside of the airport, as you’re driving thru Kenner, you’ll also find gigantic Artscapes lining major thoroughfares & around many public spaces and spanning into Kenner’s next-door neighbors: Metairie, the Westbank & even all the way to the entrance of Grand Isle (Jefferson Parish’s ‘island’, located at the mouth of the >>

Barataria Bay where it meets the Gulf of Mexico).

Artscapes are huge sculptures created & inspired by a public art program so that everyone has an opportunity to appreciate art in a natural setting. Day or night (many Artscapes light up after-dark) drive down Power Boulevard or all the way to Lakeside Shopping Center & beyond to indulge in the collection of larger-than-life art just waiting to be admired. Local favorite: ‘Apple Pi’, by artist Paul Leaman, is a witty way to bring up all those Pi lessons with the kids! The dual dogs keeping watch out in Kenner conveniently point towards an adorable dog park (created for pooches of all sizes) located right here in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.

If you adore checking out artwork on a grand scale, murals are another way to get your artistic craving in & around Jefferson Parish. Revolutionizing walls, buildings & neighborhoods around the state, these massive ‘paintings’ tell stories of communities & artists of all ages, like this lovely long-winded mural in Fat City (another little ‘neighborhood’ in Jefferson Parish). These murals were painted by young artists in local Grace King High School when 16 students were given the chance to spruce up their community with painted murals depicting the vibrant culture of Fat City. Walk the entire span of this creative beauty to see the way every single individual painting intertwines with the scene in

the next one…it’s brilliant & one can only imagine the conversations that led to how each would so naturally feed into the next. A beautiful interlacing of not only art, but young communicators brainstorming their soon-to-be masterpiece together.

Drive down the road a few moments to see “Legs in the Air” by Kyle Bravo or “In Fat City” by artist Robert Dafford; providing a tall & scenic selfie-opportunity. The sheer size of the many murals throughout Jefferson Parish, interlaced with their placement, nurture the landscape with Louisiana culture & soul.

Jefferson Parish is steeped in history like the mural displayed atop the German American Cultural Center of the historic city of Gretna, one of the cities in Jefferson Parish that you might hear locals refer to as part of ‘The West bank’. Check out the external mural on the museum then step thru the doors to explore the historical photographs & educational visuals inside…celebrating & honoring the German immigrants who founded Gretna in 1836.

In Westwego, another on ‘The Westbank’ beauty, check out the Westwego Shrimp Lot (where there’s WAY MORE than shrimp) then go find this dapper green fellow relaxing in his swampy vieux. The epitome of this Louisiana life.

Speaking of seafood…in Jefferson Parish, art is often linked to the mouthwatering array of fresh seafood available & oysters are often the muse. As the nation’s number one producer of oysters, Louisiana’s reputation for not only knowing how to cultivate & prepare oysters but turn them into art for the walls or for the tastebuds, is what makes oysters such a big deal around here.

In late 2012, the Jefferson Convention & Visitors Bureau, Inc. teamed up with the Louisiana Tourism Recovery Program to create Louisiana’s 1st Oyster Trail. Local artists were invited to paint life-sized resin oysters that embody restaurants throughout Jefferson Parish as part of a public art program. Follow the Louisiana Oyster trail to spot the 3-foottall oyster-art & experience the local flavor of over 20 participating restaurants & businesses that only serve Louisiana born & bred oysters.

With the abundance of history all throughout Jefferson Parish, you could spend days simply driving around to read & learn about the lifetimes of stories that have played out on these lands. Memorials & statues are the type of art that have a way of transporting us to another time & place in history. They lend our minds to wander & we find ourselves suddenly standing somewhere with the ability to fully take in what might’ve happened at that exact spot generations before us.

Wander out to La Salle’s Landing in Rivertown to stand where the first ever World Heavyweight Championship took place in 1870 & you’ll be greeted by the statues of the two immortalized boxers: “Gypsy” Jem Mace & Tom Allen.

American Legion Memorial, Grand Isle. Jefferson Louisiana Oyster Trail sculpture, Gretna.

Or take a daytrip out to Grand Isle to a take in a completely artistic different view. For the most part you can get from one side of Jefferson Parish to the other in about 20-30 minutes (without traffic) but getting out to Jefferson Parish’s most remote beauty: Grand Isle, takes a good bit longer since you actually end up leaving Jefferson Parish and traveling thru 2 other parishes to get back to it again. The drive is completely worth it though; below is a shot of my jeep-view heading in.

Hurricane Ida’s horrific devastation to Grand Isle in 2021 is still clearly evident but the area

was alive with locals & rebuilding intermittently everywhere on the recent August day I visited. There are endless views just asking to be captured, photographed & hung up on the wall, but the sight that took me off guard over and over again were the masses of sunflowers EVERYWHERE. Wild sunflowers lined the beaches and the sand, they lined the gas stations & quant restaurants. They grew by themselves & interwoven with other wild flowers. There were sunflowers bursting from everywhere, almost drowning out the sad bones of homes that used to be whole before the >>

storm. The abundance of flowers took my breath away. Sunflowers are known to face toward the sun, but when the sun isn’t out, they face each other. Natural art reminding us what to do when we struggle to find our light alone. There are multiple monuments in the area as well; but the structure that made me stop & catch my breath was of the soldier standing so focused among his other immortalized comrades at the Grand Isle American Legion Post 309. He seemed to be looking out toward the water that was right beyond the grass. It was beautiful that day, windy & slightly cool from the bit of rain that had come in earlier that morning. I could only hear the breeze & feel the

quiet strength radiating from everything around me. The picture of resilience.

In Jefferson Parish art is everywhere. From our oyster filled bayous to our bustling historical hubs. Art is painted on canvases made to withstand the storms & created within every sizzling seafood dish one of our passionate chefs serves up. Our community embraces art: the preserving of it, the creating of it, the exploration of it throughout the generations. Art is a love language that connects us all here & it’s yours to discover, embrace & weave into your Louisiana adventure too.

P.S. don’t forget to pack your rain boots.

FAMILY FUN

BRING THE ENTIRE FAMILY

We are hunting for gators. The kind that live in the bayou, lurking in cypress swamps and like to be fed marshmallows.

When the alligators hear the sounds of pontoons and airboats running, they know visitors are coming.

For now, our pontoon at Airboat Adventures is simply trying to leave the dock in Lafitte, Louisiana.

“In the event you drop your cell phone or camera in the water takin’ a picture of the wildlife out there, please get my attention as quickly as possible,” says Earl “T-Earl” Polkey, the 6-foot-9 captain of our boat. “That way I can tell everyone else to wave bye-bye to your phone.”

The crowd laughs.

Recently, the crew set a new record of losing 17 cell phones during four tours.

“I’m gonna get y’all some gators guys,” he tells us, as the crowd cheers.

Polkey has been navigating this swamp since he was 8 ½ years old. He grew up here trapping muskrats, minks and alligators, anything he says to help put food on the table to help his mom and dad.

The last time he got bit by an alligator, Polkey

says it cost him 72 stitches and three days in the ICU.

“We can’t stop ourselves,” Polkey says. “We see an alligator we want to play with them.”

As the boat glides deeper in the Barataria Bayou, French lyrics by Jamie Bergeron and the Kickin’ Cajuns croon in the background. We ride in the bow of the boat, looking out over the water’s edge, admiring the Spanish moss hanging down from the cypress trees and the lime-colored duckweed.

“Hey, look,” my son shouts, as he spots a gator zig-zagging through the water.

Then he sees another.

“He’s the gator spotter,” someone says to me. “We need someone like that.”

Polkey stops the boat.

He hands my son a marshmallow to throw in the water. With his left hand, my son tosses it in as an alligator catches it, in its mouth.

“Yeah,” my son shouts. “He ate it.”

Polkey moves to the other side of the boat. “Do you know what that is,” he asks an unsuspecting passenger.

“Oh, my,” she says, as she turns to see an alligator swimming towards the boat.

Polkey opens the metal side gate and leans over the water as he kisses the alligator on its head.

“Why do you think we call it Airboat Adventures,” he says with a laugh.

More marshmallows are tossed. Eventually, the boat moves into other parts of the swamp.

Shows like “NCSI: New Orleans,” “True Blood,” “True Detective,” and movies like “Interview with a Vampire” and Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” have been filmed here.

Moved by the Zydeco music, my son decides to dance on the boat. Flipping his legs up into the air, he kicks and spins around on the metal floor, much to the delight of other passengers who clap for him.

After nearly two hours on the boat, we head back to the dock. My son high-fives “T-Earl” and heads inside the gift shop to see “Sugar” a rare albino alligator.

Later in the day, we return to Airboat Adventures for a private ride on an airboat. There are larger varieties, but this one is perfect for my son, who has just turned 5. He doesn’t want to go too fast. This captain takes it slow and eventually opens it up so we are flying across the water after my son asks to go faster again.

We wanted our Louisiana trip to be filled with off-the-beaten-path experiences. It’s hard to believe this swamp is only 35 minutes south of New Orleans. As we later learn, Jefferson Parish is the largest county (parish) in Louisiana, in terms of land. There’s a west bank and east bank that divides Jefferson Parish on either side of the Mississippi River.

Here on the west bank, we take a rangerguided “wetlands walk” through the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve’s Barataria Preserve that’s part of the National Park Service. From the visitor’s center, there’s a plank wooden trail that wanders directly over the water through

swamps and marsh. There’s a junior ranger program where my son earns a wooden badge after playing bingo with plants and animals he discovered on our hike.

Being below sea level, the alligators duck in and out under the boardwalk when they don’t like to be disturbed. Here, wildlife is not to be fed or disturbed. Massive black grasshoppers nearly as large as my hand cling to mangrove trees near flowering buttonbush plants that look magical with their white poof-ball-like wands.

We opt for lunch in historic town of Gretna to feast on crawfish queso and a sloppy roast beef po’boy at Gattuso’s. It’s the best we’ve ever had. Nearby there’s an 1859 firehouse, home to the oldest, continuously active volunteer fire company in the United States.

A day later, we head to “The Pen,” a 4-mile long rectangular-shaped lake off the Barataria Waterway. It once was farmland. Now it is a fishing oasis filled with redfish, flounder, drum, channel cats, blue crabs, alligators and shrimp. In Southeast Louisiana, this is the place to come. Locals will tell you one day the fish won’t stop biting and the next they cease to exist.

We hop into a boat with Kody Slocum from Jean Lafitte Harbor Charters. The harbor is one of the largest full-service marinas in the state.

After making our way out, we find open water.

“Let’s go in the front, bud, me and you,” Slocum tells my son. He casts it for him. “Let it drop to the bottom,” Slocum says. “Let it get a tight line until you feel something tug.”

“I can feel bluegills tug,” my son says. But this isn’t like fishing in Wisconsin.

“There ain’t going to be no bluegills here,” Slocum says. “This is going to be a little bit harder bite. You’ve got to hold on or they’ll take you for a ride, okay?”

He gets a fish on the line, but it gets off. Soon, a shrimper, Bruce Roquille, shows up in a flatbottom fishing boat. He shows us his basket of shrimp he’s caught with his net. With the full moon, the last five days have been a “shrimp moon” he says, because the shrimp migrate with the stronger currents of falling tides.

“Just like a new moon,” Roquille says. “Only you can’t see them then because it’s dark.”

Soon afterwards, I get a Black Drum on the line. I fight with it. It’s big at 16-inches, but nothing like the 32-inch Black Drum my partner, Jim, soon gets. He >>

fights with it back and forth. Sweating and reeling.

“That’s the good fight right there, this is what you want,” says Slocum as he reaches for a net. “Lift up and reel. Lift up and reel.”

Minutes tick by. Eventually, he reels it in as Slocum scoops up the drum in his net. They highfive each other.

“Yeah, Daddy,” our son cheers. “Let’s keep it.”

Our adventures continue as each day passes. We don helmets and race go-karts at Nola Motorsports Park in Avondale. With more than 80 track configurations (including a .95-mile SKUA Pro Circuit) on 30 acres of track, it’s the largest karting track in North America.

It’s blazing fast. After 10-laps around, we get our scores and step onto a podium honoring gold, silver and bronze finishers. We visit the Speed Shop with its Porsche showroom and fully functional mechanic shop. My son proclaims he wants the Yokohama-sponsored No. 77 “tigertoothed” Porsche, as I remind him to “not touch anything” while taking a picture.

After visiting the Westwego Shrimp Lot, where seafood is brought in daily, we stop at Segnette Landing for lunch. My son, who adores Raising Cane’s French fries—one of the few things he can eat out because of his food allergies— enjoys fresh fruit and fries, while we nosh on flaky crawfish pie, crab cakes and scrumptious bread pudding that makes us

want more. Outback, there’s a patio to view alligators swimming or visitors can jump on a swamp boat tour.

We head north to the East Bank of Jefferson Parish. In Metairie, we visit the 155-acre Lafreniere Park, Jefferson Parish’s largest East Bank Park with its 20-acre lagoon, an old-time carousel and 18-hole disc golf course. We grab a sno-ball—finely shaved block ice that’s infused with flavors like strawberry, cantaloupe or the stuffed variety made with chocolate and condensed milk poured over on top.

We grab charbroiled oysters, crabmeat au gratin and carrot soufflé at the original Deanie’s just blocks away from the Bucktown Marsh Boardwalk on Lake Pontchartain. Another night, we are pleasantly surprised by the upscale food and great service at the Boulevard American Bistro in Elmwood with its house made cream spinach dip and tender Cajun-seasoned grilled redfish.

We visit the Kenner Planetarium and Space Science Complex in the historic district of Rivertown. It’s a hidden gem, a trifecta that combines a science center with dig-for-dinosaur bones, electricity, bugs and bicycling-with-askeleton exhibits, with a space-themed section that includes a mini shuttle launch vehicle for kids and a walk-through NASA International Space Station prototype, and a 118-seat, 50-foot domed planetarium. It’s so much fun, my son doesn’t want to go.

30 www .V isit J efferson P arish com
Deanie’s Seafood, Bucktown/Metairie.

Despite all that we’ve done, my son finds nothing more fun than doing laser tag at Adventure Quest Laser Tag in Harahan. We enter the building, and he shrieks with delight. It’s a sensory overload with every arcade game imaginable, an escape room, glow-in-the-dark mini golf, bumper cars and laser tag.

The neon-infused two-story, 6,000-foot laser tag area is massive, big enough for 36 players. We enter a room and join “Team Blue” to compete against “Team Red.”

After a quick safety intro, we don vests and laser guns. “The beauty of laser tag is you don’t know anyone you are playing with but it doesn’t matter, you are going for targets, lights and everybody has a good time,” says Suzanne Provenzano, owner of Adventure Quest Tag.

Each team enters off the opposite side of the room. It’s modeled after the Indiana Jones movie, “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” We sneak around like ninjas, firing laser beams at colorful circles on the maze of walls and lights on other people’s vests.

Eight minutes tick down until the game is over.

As we exit and look at the digital scoreboard, I realize our team has won and I’m at the top of the leader board with the most points.

My son squeals with delight and says, “Let’s do it again.”
