EMPOWERING GIRLS THROUGH MARTIAL ARTS HEATHER BOTSFORD, INSTRUCTOR AND ADVOCATE FOR WOMEN’S SELF-DEFENSE
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START TEACHING GIRLS’ SELF-DEFENSE CLASSES?
My journey into martial arts began with supporting my son’s interest but evolved into a passion for sharing its benefits with other women, especially young girls. I aim to provide a space where girls can learn self-defense while developing self-awareness, confidence, and resilience.
WHAT MAKES MARTIAL ARTS VALUABLE FOR GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN?
Martial arts offer a unique opportunity for girls to develop physical and mental strength in a supportive environment. Kenpo Karate focuses on practical self-defense techniques effective regardless of size or strength, instilling discipline, perseverance, and self-respect.
HOW DO YOU REASSURE HESITANT GIRLS ABOUT JOINING MARTIAL ARTS CLASSES?
At Covington Karate Studio, we foster a warm and supportive environment. Drawing from my personal journey, I’m dedicated to working closely with each student, empowering them to overcome limitations. Additionally, I share my journey to reassure girls: martial arts is for everyone.
HOW DO YOU INTEGRATE PRINCIPLES OF FEMINISM AND EMPOWERMENT INTO YOUR CLASSES?
Self-awareness is key in self-defense training. I stress understanding strengths, boundaries, and instincts, empowering girls in all aspects of life. As a female instructor, I challenge gender norms, allowing girls to control their safety. We address autonomy, consent, and assertiveness, breaking stereotypes and building confidence.
