Women IN Business 2013 spotlights women who have achieved success in the exciting world of northshore business. As CEO of St. Tammany Parish Hospital, Patti Ellish is a singular example of such an achievement. She sits at the helm of the parish’s second-largest employer. (The parish school system is the largest.) Now in her 13th year as CEO, Ellish is spearheading the hospital’s most recent expansion effort, with construction slated to begin later this year. The story of Ellish’s service to the hospital and the community is a fitting introduction to Women IN Business 2013.

St. Tammany Parish Hospital is one of the primary providers of health care on the northshore, and CEO Patti Ellish is at the heart of St. Tammany Parish Hospital. She has been at the helm of this growing, thriving, changing organization for 13 years. That’s more than twice the national average for a hospital CEO, a position that the late management guru Peter Drucker referred to as one of the most difficult jobs in America. The only thing more impressive than the length of her tenure is the impact it has had on our community. Under Ellish’s leadership, the hospital has tripled in size, set a precedent for disaster preparedness, led the way in technologically advanced health care and developed an integrated cancer center by partnering with a renowned leader in cancer care. But Ellish is not pausing to celebrate her accomplishments. She is preparing for the next phase of growth—a $21 million expansion project that will add another 21-bed, all-private nursing unit and a new, separate emergency department created specifically for the hospital’s youngest patients. In an area demographically dominated by young families, a dedicated pediatric emergency department might seem like a no-brainer. And yet, St.
The description of areas filled with art, aquariums and soft music is a far cry from the stark and sterile impersonal hospital corridors that occupy many of our fears and some of our memories. “It’s not just what you’re doing but how you’re doing it that I think is going to impact people’s lives,” Ellish says of the ongoing shift in clinical care to an approach that treats the whole person rather than just the disease. She works hard to lead a team of clinicians who connect with their patients. “I hope that what they’re thinking about when they deliver care is what if it were their family member—their wife or their child or their mother. What is it that they would want to do for that individual? It changes your whole perspective.” Ellish’s health care career began with that perspective. As a registered nurse, she cared for the sick for more than 20 years before she began graduate school and her executive track. “I’m a nurse. And I can’t separate that from everything that I do. … I’m no longer at the bedside, but I can’t help remembering what it’s like. For me, that’s from where I came. So I want to give back and do better.” The hospital’s newest additions will be designed to do better for our

From Nurse’s Station to Corner Office Tammany Parish Hospital will have the first of its kind in the parish. “We are responding to what we feel is a growing community need,” Ellish says, though she is quick to clarify that emergency care for children is currently available at St. Tammany and in the northshore’s other acute care medical facilities. “It’s there and it’s excellent. But we are absolutely elevating that experience.” Empathy is a main ingredient in the design of the new department. “We want to get a picture of what it’s like to be a child and have to use our emergency room. And we want to focus the facility as well as the specialists and the folks caring for your children. We want to bring that expertise to the community. It looks and feels different, and it should.” A difference will also be felt in the design of the new nursing unit. The principles of healing arts have been increasingly incorporated into St. Tammany’s clinical environment over the past decade, and new construction always offers a blank slate with which to create a place of healing that takes in all of the senses and accommodates the presence of family members. “That means not just the bricks and mortar, but the lighting and the flooring and the actual areas where we deliver care centered around the patient,” Ellish says.
community’s children, and for other patient populations whose unique needs have often been overlooked, such as geriatric or mental health patients. Ellish and her team have looked to facilities across the country to find out how they can improve their services for these groups. For the elderly or others with limited mobility or balance, common areas will be designed with wider doorways and more handrails. A special area will be created for patients with psychiatric needs to keep them safe while they await transfer to a different facility. (St. Tammany does not have psychiatric beds.) Though this next phase of growth does not come without its challenges—like adding onto the existing structure without the slightest interruption in the hospital’s current services—Ellish is a practiced leader who knows how to combine talents and plan ahead. When recognized for this, she is quick to spotlight the hard work of others. “I really have to give credit to my team,” Ellish says. “I know the financing and the bond issuance and making sure that this fits into our strategic plan probably sit in my corner. But the real design, the real work that went on day-to-day, [was done by] our chief nurse, Kerry Milton; our lead architects, Fauntleroy Latham Weldon & Barre; our COO, Sharon Toups; and our chief medical Women In Business 2013 5
officer, Dr. Robert Capitelli, who were tremendously involved in this project.We made sure we interjected the clinical folks with the technical people and the architects, because it’s those clinicians who are going to take care of patients.” The managerial savvy required to bring together such diverse talents and get them all speaking the same language also comes from Ellish’s corner, though she does not mention it. Ellish’s knack for forging collaborative partnerships has created many recent wins. The creation of Mary Bird Perkins at St. Tammany Parish Hospital, for example, has added a new dimension to cancer care on the northshore. The hospital and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center have nurtured an ongoing partnership since 1998. Today, they are no longer just partners; they are integrated. “It’s not ‘we’ and ‘them.’ It’s ‘us,’” Ellish explains. This integration goes beyond the beautiful new building that brings the Mary Bird Perkins radiation treatment, research and support under the

What we are able to do is bring care into the community by bringing those protocols and treatment modalities here.” Ellish notes that while the academic and research-driven facilities are able to provide a different level of care for the more unknown or esoteric conditions, St. Tammany is able to join many of the clinical trials that come out of those institutions. “I think our physicians are absolutely participating in the most advanced, evidence-based research protocols that are out there.” St. Tammany remains at the forefront of high-tech health care with advancements such as robotically-assisted surgery and computerized physician order entry systems. “The advancements that are here locally are impressive, even to my regional and academic teaching facility counterparts,” Ellish says. “It’s nice to know that we are able to deliver on that [level of technologically advanced health care] right here close to home.”

The American College Commission on Cancer, an organization that sets the standard for best-practice in cancer care and research, surveys and reviews the partnership regularly, and designates it an integrated cancer program. “Having us all together provides the synergies and the resources that this community deserves to have under one roof,” Ellish says. “It’s exciting! And definitely a success story for the community.” From a fully integrated cancer center to the latest technology in information sharing, diagnostic procedures, minimally invasive surgery and early detection, St. Tammany continues to bring highly specialized care “close to home.” For a hospital that services what is often referred to as the most affluent parish in the metro area, this means providing services that are on par with such renowned medical facilities as the Cleveland Clinic or the Mayo Clinic. Ellish explains one way they are able to do that. “The evidence and the research that are being produced by
Ellish’s achievements as St. Tammany’s CEO have been instrumental in raising the number and quality of health care offerings in our area. The effect has been reciprocal; the job brought Ellish home. A New Orleans native, she left Louisiana in 1996 to take the position of vice president and COO for the Memorial Health Systems of East Texas. And yet, Ellish found herself returning frequently for visits, weddings or just for a true po-boy or king cake. Her recruitment to St. Tammany in 2000 brought her home for good. “We got the chance to come back. And we were so grateful,” Ellish says wholeheartedly. So what does a woman do to feed her soul if she has the heart to persist with efforts to elevate compassion and clinical outcomes for patients, plus the mind to keep a large hospital financially self-sufficient and growing in a diminishing reimbursement climate? Patti Ellish surrounds herself with family, friends—and the flavors of South Louisiana.

Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne presented the Louisiana Volunteer Service Award to Donna O’Daniels, president and CEO of St. Tammany Tourist and Convention Commission, and Kim Bergeron, former City of Slidell director of cultural & public affairs, in recognition of their efforts to provide relief supplies to victims of Hurricane Sandy. They were the driving forces behind the Train of Hope for Sandy Relief, partnering with Amtrak to deliver critical relief supplies to New York and New Jersey following the storm. Brigid DeLoach is the new executive director of the Children’s Advocacy Center/Hope House in Covington. “I am proud to serve the communities of St. Tammany and Washington parishes to ensure the safety of its children and my own,” says Brigid. A resident of Slidell since 2004 with her husband, Anthony, and sons, Lathan, 5, and Dasch, 18 months, Brigid also works on committees of several nonprofit boards, including the New Orleans Council on Aging. Mary D. Lee was named the new chair for healing arts at St. Tammany Parish Hospital.

Candice Knight, MD Louisiana Heart Hospital Physician Group Dr. Candice Knight will soon begin her second year with the Louisiana Heart Hospital Physician Group. Board Certified in Family Medicine and Integrative and Holistic Medicine, Dr. Knight brings a passion for preventative and functional medicine to her practice and residents of the northshore. Functional medicine, she explains, seeks to form a partnership between patient and physician to treat the underlying cause of chronic ailments. “My practice is different from a traditional one. I focus on the root cause of a problem.” says Dr. Knight. “When patients see me, it’s as though they’re coming to see an experienced friend and we talk. No one knows their body better than the patient. And I’ve learned that when a patient tells me something doesn’t feel right, no matter what’s on paper, that something is wrong. Listening to my patients is very important; I hear what my patients say and add medical knowledge. Together, the two of us work as experts to solve the problem. “Focusing on the patient’s lifestyle is a big part of my practice. Eating healthy and regular exercise are important. It’s that simple. But, sometimes when stress levels are high, things don’t always operate the way they’re supposed to. The problem may also be caused by something as simple as the patient having been exposed to something they are allergic to.” She adds, “The most rewarding part of my practice is helping patients get their health and life on track so that they feel good. That’s why I do this. That’s what I live for.” A New Orleans native, Dr. Knight completed her undergraduate degree at Yale University majoring in pre-med and history. Following Yale, Dr. Knight entered Tulane University’s Master of Public Health program majoring in epidemiology and maternal and child health. After completing

Center for Women’s Health For women, by women is the motto of the Center for Women’s Health (CWH), the only all female OB/GYN practice in West St. Tammany. The practice was founded in 2005 by Dr. Katherine Williams. Kelly Brewster, a women’s health nurse practitioner, joined her at that time. Dr. Rachael Cresap came on board in 2010 and Dr. Hadar Waldman rounded out the group in 2012. The physicians, along with Kelly, practice a teamwork approach with a collaborative method for treating patients. Dr. Williams says, “We really do see every aspect of a woman, not just the physical component but also the emotional issues that we as women deal with. We feel like we do have that advantage as women to care for women.” Kelly Brewster follows, “the cornerstone of our approach is patient education. How can you beat a disease if you don’t understand it?” The mission of CWH is to provide innovative, quality health care for female patients in a warm and comfortable environment. One year ago, Michelle White and her husband, Brett, opened Wax’d, their version of what a full-body waxing salon should be. Their goal was to create a gender-neutral space offering services for both men and women. Michelle studied at John Jay on the southshore and worked for a top dermatologist in uptown New Orleans, where she gained valuable clinical experience. She says, “Wax’d is the ‘anti-day-spa’ day spa. She says, “I did not like chemistry in school, but I am having a ball in my oil and vinegar mixing lab. Susannah Leaming’s love of color and uniqueness were her inspiration in creating her line of wire-wrapped jewelry and accessories. A New Orleans native, Susannah began making rings while living in California. “Everyone wanted them,” says Susannah. “In stores, they sold out immediately. I made hundreds of rings.” Stores began asking for other pieces of her distinctive designs, which use 14karat gold-plated, non-tarnishing metal wire. She created Classic Earrings, which are still a must after five years. “I search all over for the best wire and stones. Combining them makes a statement through the use of texture, color and design,” says Susannah. Colors and styles change with each season. Even as a girl, Sheri Duplantis knew that she wanted to own her own business. Almost six years ago, while working in real estate, Sheri had the opportunity to purchase a small boutique in Houma called JuJu’s Boutique. Kathy’s family had owned and operated a well-known restaurant, Bozo’s, in Metairie for years during its heyday. Some of her earliest memories are of watching the restaurant goings-on from her perch on a barstool. She worked in the restaurant all throughout high school and college and into her adult life. K.Gee’s celebrates its third anniversary this June. While many customers come to K.Gee’s for the oysters, they return again and again for favorites such as stuffed eggplant, fried seafood, chicken dishes and hamburgers. Kathy cooks everything on the menu fresh to order and sources most of her ingredients from local suppliers. She uses only Louisiana seafood. There are no frozen or boxed ingredients here; many of the recipes have been passed down through Kathy’s family for generations. In addition to serving lunch and dinner every day except Sunday, Kathy and Gee host local music on Friday nights. Artists include Rick Sampson, Christian Serpas and other local talent. Beverly McQuaid has been blessed. The founder of the northshore’s premier early childhood education center, Planet Kids, had the opportunity that few of us get. She made her dream of a first-class childhood education program in Madisonville a reality—and built it from the ground up. “I feel blessed to be able to wake up each morning and go to work for a foundation I am passionate about. I have an incredibly gratifying career,” says Laurie Panzeca, executive director of the Slidell Memorial Hospital Foundation. Laurie has volunteered in her community since she was a child. During college, when the time came to choose a career path, her decision was clear—she wanted to work in the nonprofit sector. “I told my family I was choosing to enter the nonprofit sector and dedicate my career to it,” Laurie says. “I wanted to work in the public side of fundraising for an organization. When you have that passion deep inside, it shines through in the work that you do.” As executive director, Laurie is responsible for running the Slidell Memorial Hospital Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to improve the quality of life in the Slidell community. With the help of dedicated volunteers, the foundation aims to educate and better the community by providing technology and equipment that improves patients’ experience with healthcare. Laurie manages the day-to-day operations, works with donors, handles marketing, spreads awareness of the foundation and manages fundraising events. “My job is to do something every day that will ensure the success of the foundation and impact our community for the greater good,” Laurie says. Created to support the Slidell Memorial Hospital, the foundation receives funds from donors, fundraisers and grants. Laurie says the foundation has a firm financial footing and a plan for growth so that it can continue to partner with SMH to provide the services that patients deserve. Laurie maintains a close working relationship with the hospital staff. She says, “Slidell Memorial Hospital is a great place to work, and I am honored to be its champion in the community. I have a huge amount of respect for the SMH employees, the hospital’s Board of Commissioners and the foundation’s Board of Trustees. They are all dedicated advocates for our community.”
Married with two daughters, Laurie strives for a work and family balance. “My family is my priority when I am not at work,” Laurie says. “I feel strongly about passing my volunteerism to my children. Medical Psychologist
In her busy practice, medical psychologist Dr. Victoria Witt provides diagnosis and treats psychiatric problems with medication in addition to providing psychotherapy (similar to psychiatry). For most psychiatric conditions, research supports this approach as more beneficial than either alone. She says, “What I value about being an MP is that medications often improve the patients’ symptoms quickly and improve their psychotherapy experience.” Having a graduate degree in pharmacology/psychopharmacology, Dr. Witt is licensed by the Louisiana Medical Board as a “Medical Psychologist—Advanced Practice,” indicating high proficiency in medically treating psychiatric conditions. Dr. Witt practiced in Covington from 1992 until Hurricane Katrina. In 2007, she joined a group in Slidell that provides individual and family psychotherapy. Dr. Witt says, “Our clinic offers psychotherapy and medication treatment. IN HER 13TH YEAR as president and CEO of St. Tammany West Chamber of Commerce, Lacey Toledano leads the group in its mission of strengthening the business climate by promoting the community’s economic development and vitality. The Chamber’s success was recognized by its receipt of 5-star accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, an honor bestowed on fewer than 70 chambers in the country. Marta Bragg loves every aspect of owning her upscale women’s boutique, The Villa. “I enjoy talking to the people who come into the store,” she says. “It is really interesting. People often think a certain dress won’t look good on them. From experience, I know it will, and I tell them ‘just trust me.’ When it looks wonderful and they love it, they are so pleasantly surprised.” While the biggest seller is dresses, The Villa carries other apparel, gifts and jewelry. Marta describes her personal style as “classic with an edge,” which reflects in the stock in her store. Known for optimal customer service, The Villa offers free alterations and gift wrapping. Marta says, “Good customer service is hard to come by. I make sure when someone comes into my store, they are treated very special.” Marta and her husband of 23 years, Billy, whom she refers to as “the light of my life,” have two grown daughters, Nichole and Elizabeth. Marta and Nichole purchased the store in 2000. They ran the store as a motherdaughter team until Nichole chose to stay home to raise her children. Marta is the proud grandmother to three little girls. “I love them all more than life itself. It is more fun being a grandmother than you can imagine,” she says.
Sara Adams’ passion is perfect parties. She works her magic at the historic and hip Lakehouse in Mandeville. A breathtaking view of Lake Pontchartrain’s sunset is the backdrop for the wonderful events and memories of a lifetime that she helps clients create. A New Orleans native, Sara came to Mandeville by way of New York City, where she produced large-scale events for non-profits. “I missed my family and was tired of being cold,” she says of her return to Louisiana. Since opening her fine art school studio in Covington more than a year ago, Gretchen Armbruster has seen her classes become so popular that she had to add classes and expand her curriculum. She says, “I could never have imagined loving a job so much. Teaching such talented and wonderful people is truly a great thing to wake up and do every day!” Well-known as a portrait and landscape artist, Gretchen works in oils, watercolor and pencil. She paints for galleries across the country, such as Southern Breeze in Jackson, Miss.; Taylor Clark Gallery in Baton Rouge; and the Pineapple Gallery and Arabella in Mandeville. She is featured in the May issue of the national American Art Collector magazine. Gretchen’s notable work includes painting the 2004-2006 Crescent City Classic posters, 12 years of elaborate Bacchus designs and extensive murals in the historic French Quarter Old Absinthe House. Her paintings can also be found in St. Tammany Parish Hospital, West Jefferson Hospital, Ochsner Hospital and many restaurants and homes in the area. Gretchen’s work was seen on the big screen in the movie He said, She Said. Gretchen studied with area artists such as David Robert Rosbach, Alan Flattman, David Jinks and at LSU and John McCrady Art College.

In her eighth year as Executive Director of the St. Tammany Hospital Foundation, Charley Strickland assists the organization in developing philanthropic support for the hospital’s mission—providing world-class health care close to home for generations to come. With Charley’s help, the Foundation raised nearly $1.2 million in 2012 alone. Special fundraising events like Monster Mash, the Heart and Night of Fashion, Angels of Light and the “Get Lucky!” Golf Tournament raised about half of the funds and provided fun and bonding for the entire St. Tammany community. Outright donations, grants from corporations and foundations and bequests completed the year’s giving. Important hospital programs including the Parenting Center, the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Hospital, Infection Prevention, Hospice, the Employee Benevolent Fund, Respiratory Services and the Nurse/Family Partnership benefited from 2012’s generous gifts. The community has donated more than $9 million to the Foundation since its inception. Founded in 2003, the St. Tammany Hospital Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization led by a volunteer board of community leaders who are committed to keeping St. Tammany Parish Hospital at the forefront of medical technology. Charley shares, “Not many people realize that St. Tammany is a selfsupporting, not-for-profit community hospital that receives no tax funding.” A member of the Association for Health care Philanthropy, Charley has most recently served as its governmental affairs representative for Louisiana. As a planned giving specialist, she has seen the Foundation’s Legacy of Caring Society grow under her watch. “Planned gifts are those made now that come to fruition in the future. They are bequests in wills, insurance policies and charitable gift annuities, just to name a few,” says Charley. “I am blessed to have such a rewarding job. Every day, I interact with our generous donors and volunteers who value the importance of having an award-winning, state-of-the-art community hospital. Keeping St. Tammany Parish Hospital healthy keeps our community healthy.”
