Foraged Earth Whether by animals or humans, we source for food from Mother Earth. It could have been plucked from the grounds, hunted in the woods or fished from the sea. The natural food our Earth produces is intriguing, unique and so important to us. Thus through this, I hope to highlight some food ingredients together with important organisms that are essential in our food chain. May we learn to be more aware of our surroundings and learn to slow down to appreciate our natural ingredients every now and then.

Supernatural Naturalist Supernatural Naturalist - something that exists naturally but sometimes beyond science explanation. Many things in our lives come naturally to us without concrete explanation. It is beyond natural and well, supernatural. Earth’s natural resources are precious and essential for our survival. Besides the most basic resource for survival, water, Mother Earth also produces food naturally. Fruits and vegetables grow on trees and the ground and many are already edible straight from the source. No cooking, no preparation, no washing is required. If you think about it, this might exactly be the way humans used to survive. Till this day, some animals survive this way.
Thus, I have decided to narrow down the theme to the topic of ecosystems and the food chain on Earth, mainly focusing on food elements. Food chain: linear sequence of organisms through nutrients and energy pass as one organism eats another.
Producers Plants, produce own food using the sun
Primary consumers Herbivores, plant eaters, algae, mollusks
Secondary consumers Omnivore, eats both plant and animal
Tertiary consumers Carnivore, eagles/fishes/snakes
Decomposer Break down dead organic material/wastes

Moodboard:
Moodboard / Artist Reference
Even though the topic that I am focusing on is more serious than fun, I would still like to keep my visuals light-hearted and balanced. As such, I have decided to go with brighter, happier colours that complement each other. I envision my patterns and banner to be placed in the kitchen or cafes and restaurants that lean towards positive energy with a hint of candidness, nothing too serious or classy. A little bit of fun and joy in colours and illustrations always help to liven the mood
First inspiration:
- Vintage reference flags
Artist reference: Ellen Winata An art director and illustrator based in Singapore. She works on a variety of works such as illustrations, digital, design and advertising. Her works are known for their clean lines and vibrant colours with minimal and effective texture. I was greatly inspired by her style and loved how she creates her illustration with geometric shapes/ lines and treats them with a little bit of texture. They come together really pleasantly and puts a smile on one’s face, something I would like to achieve in my pattern and banner.

Digitised motifs:
Dinis Goh
I did not have much sketches as I was clear and got approval on the art direction I wanted to take. I started digitsing motifs of different plants, fruits, clams and more.
Algae:
Motifs The motifs I chose to illustrate were all elements that can be found in the food chain humans are highly dependent on. I illustrated them with their basic shapes and added extra strokes to give them more character. I did not want to be confined by their original colours as I hoped for my banner to be less realistic and more imaginative.
Plants:
Initial sketches: Vegetable, Fungi & Fruits:
Shells & Seafood: style 1
style 2
style 3 I decided to go with style 3 as it has a good balance of being too realistic and too cartoon-ish, I also like the grain texture applied to it.

Mockups:
Since my patterns are related to food, I think they will be perfect for items that can be found in the kitchen such as cups, plates, and table cloths. The colours help bring live to the kitchen or table setting.
