ABSTRACT Survival of the Fittest is inspired by the Meckel-Serres concept of recapitulation, conceptualising that the development of the brain progresses through the hierarchy of nature, starting from fish to reptile to bird to a general mammalian brain until it finally takes its shape of the human brain. This dream-like, utopian landscape houses itself to a myriad of quirky, eccentric creatures — or a facade to conceal a bitter truth perhaps. What once became known as a place of comfort and ease, has transformed into a sprint to escape from their inevitable future by fair means or foul.

RESEARCH To translate a utopian landscape into an illustrative piece, I needed to consider both flora and fauna. For flora, I was mainly inspired by Ernst Haeckel’s psychedic scientific illustrations. He drew each with such peculiar detail and beautiful renderings that it fascinated me and inspired me to create some of my own.

SKETCHES After my research I began sketching out characters. For these characters, I wanted them to be quirky and peculiar creatures. Most of these animals take on body parts from other animals as the transformative phase towards their next creature continues. They are armed with weapons to attack or defend themselves such as a bow and arrow.
