Malay Magic Traditional folk medicine and rituals Ayesha Jumari
Malay Magic Before Islam was introduced to the Malay archipelago around the 15th Century, the inhabitants of the land practiced mostly Animism or Hinduism. In Animism, they believed that all things possessed ‘semangat’ or spirit, including humans, animals, plants and even non-living things such as minerals. They also placed great importance on the balance of the elements - earth, fire, wind and water, the failing of which was thought to be the reason for disease. Many rituals used by traditional Malay healers (called bomoh, dukun or pawang) involved the use of herbs, animal parts, charms and rituals that may or may not invoke the spirits from the natural world. In this project, I want to approach the theme of Supernatural Naturalist through this lens of Malay Magic to portray the beauty, spirit and magic of local flora and fauna.

Beauty & Beast Supernatural Naturalism Many of these animals are viewed as beasts because of their rather morbid appearances that tend to scare and or disgust most of us. However, people are always so quick to judge a book by its cover that we forget about the beauty within them. The title hence seeks to encapsulate the notion that they are both beautiful and a beast, that we do not let their appearance distract us from remembering that they too are beautiful and are part of nature’s unique creations.

CONCEPT 1: PERMUTATIONS, COMBINATIONS It’s fantastical to me that the same shapes and patterns get repeated across various natural forms and animals. The same wave-like patterns in a butterfly’s wing to mushrooms... even spirals that occur in something as small when a millipede curls up to how our galaxy is represented. I’m fascinated and awed by these permutations and combinations in the commonalities across nature. Upon further research, the concept of Turing patterns explain the biology behind these formations. English mathematician Alan Turing introduced a concept called a Turing pattern, in a 1952 paper entitled “The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis”. This foundational paper describes how patterns in nature, such as stripes and spots, can arise naturally and autonomously from a homogeneous, uniform state. The final banner would explore various examples of Turing patterns found in nature, as well as other patterns such as honeycomb structures and Fibonacci spirals. References 1. On style
On subject matter
A German zoologist, naturalist, eugenicist, philosopher, physician, professor, marine biologist, and artist who discovered, described and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms, and coined many terms in biology. His published artwork includes over 100 detailed, multi-colour illustrations of animals and sea creatures.
I like the intricacies of the illustration here and would probably attempt to illustrate my subject manner in a similar way, using watercolor and/or color pencil. I love traditional mediums so this could be very enjoyable.
His work seems to illustrate organisms of the same species/family, which I appreciate because it shows the subtle similarities and differences between them. My subject matter differs in that I would like to take a more ‘macro’ view of nature and illustrate commonalities between even living things across different species and non-living things like landscapes.
CONCEPT 2: MULTIVERSES/MULTIPLICITY In Hindu cosmology, the universe is composed of fourteen lokas, or worlds, that make up a multiverse. The lokas are divided into the seven upper worlds, known as vyarthis, and the seven lower worlds, known as patalas. The seven vyarthis 1. Satya-loka – place of Brahma, where souls are released from the cycle of rebirth 2. Tapa-loka – Ayohnija devadasis live here 3. Jana-loka – home to the sons of the god Brahma 4. Mahar-loka – enlightened beings such as Markandeya live here 5. Svar-loka – heaven and paradise, where all the 330 million Hindu gods live 6. Bhuvar-loka (or Pitri-loka) – where semi-divine beings live 7. Bhur-loka – Earth The seven patalas 1. Atala-loka – ruled by Bala, son of Maya, a famed demon architect 2. Vitala-loka – ruled by the god Hara-Bhava with attendant ganas 3. Sutala-loka – kingdom of the demon king Bali 4. Talatala-loka – realm of Maya 5. Mahatala-loka – home to the Nagas (serpents) 6. Rasatala-loka – home of the Asuras (demons) 7. Patala-loka (or Naga-loka) – region of the Nagas containing all jewels References 1. Dimmitt, Cornelia (2012). In relation to this, another Hindu concept concerned with the cosmic order is Dashavatara, the ten avatars of Vishnu. The Dashavatara (Sanskrit: daśāvatāra) refers to the ten primary (i.e. full or complete) incarnations (avatars) of Vishnu, the Hindu god of preservation. Vishnu is said to descend in the form of an avatar to restore cosmic order. The list of included avatars varies across sects and regions, particularly in respect to the inclusion of Balarama (brother of Krishna) or Gautama Buddha. Though no list can be uncontroversially presented as standard, most draw from the following set of figures, in this order: Matsya; Kurma; Varaha; Narasimha; Vamana; Parashurama; Rama; Krishna or Balarama; Buddha or Krishna; and Kalki. Laurent Moreau On style I really enjoy the 1) variations of strokes 2) obvious separations of foregrund and background into different layers. I think this clear separation would be needed when distinguishing between different lokas. On subject matter He illustrates nature mostly – while not very applicable to the concept, I draw inspiration from the foliage for some of the specific lokas. Bene Rohlmann On style I enjoy the flat, illustrative style here – it could be useful for uniting the different lokas in as much as they have starkly different subject matter. On subject matter He sometimes illustrate religious imagery – could be useful to look at his treatment of dragons when illustrating demons. Yukai Du On style I enjoy the color scheme: seems really regal, yet modern. Might possibly look into this predominant usage of blues and reds. On subject matter: He morphs human and natural architectural features together - might hint to divine creation so I could possibly incorporate that. CONCEPT 3: PLANT PLAYGROUND
CONCEPT 3: ARTIST REFERENCE
I was intrigued by the idea of nature taking over humans: what would a plant civilization look like? More specifically, I would illustrate a plant playground with plant children, as this concept is a playful reimagination and it would be a light-hearted take on the idea. I would experiment with personifying plants and plant-architecture morphs, especially as some natural plant forms already emulate architecture for me. A twirled vine could function as as a playground slide, upside down flowers as a light source, the plant-humans could be carrying mushroom umbrellas/hats, and they could ride on butterfly hot air balloons.
On style The moodboard I have arranged here expresses foliage in different ways, with mixed media and a flat digital style. I enjoy both, but generally would want to show lots of lush foliage and variety in the background plants. On subject matter While my theme shares the simsame base idea revolving around plants, my plants would be either morphed or hukmanized, so there would be that additonal element.
