Supernatural Naturalist

“If there is a quest for scientific facts about the origin of life, then can’t that also be considered a search for god, if “god” is understood to be “creator”? If the quest of science is to find out what we came from, or “how we got here,” then finding the answer isn’t that much different than finding religion. All theories — scientific as well as religious — involve at least some faith in their until they’re proven — it’s just that some people believe in the lab and use it to test their hypotheses, while others believe in the Word.” Angela Watercutter Prometheus Poses Eternal Questions About Science, Creationism, Wired Magazine, www.wired.com (website) https://www.wired.com/2012/06/prometheus-science-faith-creationism/

“SUPERNATURAL” The supernatural (Medieval Latin: supernātūrālis: supra “above” + naturalis “nature”), is that which is said to exist above and beyond nature. In philosophy, popular culture and fiction, the supernatural is associated with the paranormal, religions as well as invisible phenomena.

“NATURALIST” This project aim is to try to combine conflicts of science, faith, questions about origins of man, nature and everything super+natural. The project is inspired by nature, botany and study of plants, climate and environmental change, flora, early herbalism, Darwinism, creationism, and intelligent design, fantasy. English naturalist and geologist Charles Darwin, (1809-1882), is best known for his contributions to evolutionary theory. He closed a perceived chasm between humans and animals. His theory of natural selection changed people’s perception of themselves from specially hand made by God to being just another animal evolved from animals. Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919), was German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist. Darwin and Haeckel explored the origin of the human species and whether we have makers who share our DNA. During his life Darwin embarked on an exotic five-year expedition called Voyage of Beagle, investigating geology, observing nature, botany, tropical forests, making natural history collections, theorized about geology and extinction of giant mammals, transmutations, and the act of creation and human origins. Haeckel promoted and popularized Charles Darwin’s work in Germany. He published artwork of over 100 detailed, multicolored illustrations of animals and sea creatures. As a philosopher, Ernst Haeckel wrote Die

DV5003 PATTERN ART DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE

A collection is a group of designs that are based on the same theme. Designers normally work on collection rather than on individual design, creating groups of print and patterns linked by colour, style, content, presentation and end-use. The number of designs in the collection varies – in this project, you will have 12 designs of various sizes and applications. At the end of projects, you will compile all the works done in class into a Portfolio (softcopy). The overall project goal is to: • design a pattern collection for various applications • establish a visual context in expressive pattern with maximum visual impact •

identify and use techniques to create a wide range of surface pattern designs.

THEME OF INSPIRATION The project is looking into magical and supernatural as a starting inspiration for a series of motifs, inspired by nature, botany, plants, animals, landscapes, fantastical and magical associations and how they relate to climate change. Visual framework may be referenced from nature, botany and study of plants, micro/macroclimate and environmental change, flora, herbalism, fantasy, Ernst Haeckel and Charles Darwin’s work, Karl Blossfeldt, scientific illustration, alchemy, botanical drawings, William Morris, Sofia Crespo, art nouveau, AI. These will be starting points to work from.

DELIVERABLES Create a series of design elements/motifs and apply them for a wide range of pattern designs. You will be graded on your research, development, and final design. 1.

Banner Design h3564 mm x w420 mm: Create a large-scale, placement of motif prints for a vertical composition that will be digitally printed as a tall textile banner. The design needs to run perfectly across the entire length of the textile roll to make the full image. The banner is an individual design that will influence the rest of pattern collection. The design for the banner needs to blur the boundaries between pattern and art illustration.

2.

Using the same elements /motifs, design pattern for sitespecific LED media wall set in public. The LED pixel resolution is 3840 by 480 pixels and the size of the screen is 15 m by 2 m.

3.

Using the same elements /motifs, design 10 designs of seamless repeat pattern; 2x2 repeats.

4.

Colour palettes: A colour palette is a group of colours designed to work together. They may be developed alongside the imagery that forms the pattern. Colour palette plays a crucial role in helping convey a particular theme or concept. Many printed textile designers treat the palette as the starting point of much of their work. The palette will need to be presented as colour swatch.

5.

Colourways: a colourway is an alternative version of the same design in different colours.

6.

Visualization of the potential use of pattern. The product it shows is more likely to be placed in context- interior setting say, or someone wearing a garment. Visualization shows how the pattern will (or could) appear in end-use and (if it is in repeat), how an expanse of the design will look (normally two repeats in either direction). Use a realistic photograph or other images.

7.

Compile all of the works done in class into a Portfolio by week 14. The portfolio is a well-presented selection of your work.

2021-22
