NEWS FROM

Your LBC

MAY 2021 Dear Friends of Luther Burbank Center, We are encouraged by the recent news that the State of California plans for a full reopening on June 15. We remain cautiously optimistic about this goal, and are preparing for what a “return to normal” might look like for the LBC. While we cannot wait to welcome you back, our number one priority is for the safety of our visitors, performers, volunteers, and staff. Our team is developing protocols for reopening based on guidance from the state and local governments. Our team is participating in professional certification and training protocols so when we do reopen everyone will feel comfortable returning to the Center. As a nonprofit arts organization, it is not financially feasible to have performances in the main theater until we are able to operate at full capacity. As we navigate these new challenges, we’re working with artists and their management on our future lineup. All of our largescale performance events through July 31 have been postponed, cancelled, or rescheduled; our first mainstage presentation, at this time, is scheduled for August. As reopening plans develop, we will communicate to the community through our website, email, and social media channels. In the meantime, you can continue to access our virtual programs — Luther Locals, The Muse Hour, free Clover Sonoma Family Fun Series and Let’s Be Creative with LBC! — on our website and social media. Or, enjoy a movie outside on the big screen with your family at the popular Carpool Cinemas. Thank you for your continued support. We could not do this without you.

Art of Dessert - Thank You! Thank you to all who so generously supported Art of Dessert earlier this month. We are thrilled to report that we are only $9,000 away from reaching our $500,000 goal! This year’s event was special as it launched our 40th Anniversary Celebration and a look back on four decades of connecting our community through the arts, across schools, homes, and stages. Emerging from what proved to be a challenging year for everyone, we're excited to be getting ready for reopening and inviting the community back for live performance. Donate TODAY and help us secure the funding that will allow us to do that. Your ongoing help now is an investment in the LBC—the region’s oldest and invaluable community gathering place and home for the arts.

Music Matters At Bellevue Elementary School music (and all arts!) matter. Every student in grades 3-5 participates in hands-on ukulele lessons with a teaching artist through the LBC's Music Matters program. In this yearlong, arts-integrated program, elementary students explore basic musicianship, instrument care, tuning, and ukulele instruction. After learning the basics, the teaching artist and each class work together to compose collaborative class songs based on a current area of study — a beautiful way to integrate arts into classroom curriculum. Over the years there have been amazingly creative pieces written on subjects such as the solar system, the ocean, even long division! Watch a video of students performing their catchy tune, Long Division here. This program has sparked joy and excitement every year since 2016. Even though things looked a bit different this year, students were still able to participate in the program by bringing the ukuleles home and meeting with the teaching artist virtually.
