Note from Program/Events Director, Melissa Stewart We are excited to introduce the Summer 2014 Activity Guide! Please take some time to look at the activities and mark your calendar for the ones you would like to participate in. You can come into Chop’s or register online. We do our best to cover a wide range of interests and keep the costs low so everyone can participate. This includes our membership. We require that the minimum of $1.00 is paid for the annual membership, but encourage those who can afford more to consider paying more. Remember to save the date for our Open House on June 7th and July 30th for our Art Gala. Please feel free to call anytime!

Membership Information:  Chop’s membership is open to Santa Rosa youth in 7th-12th grades.  You must become a Chop’s Teen Club member to participate in Chop’s activities (except for dances and special events).  To become a member, complete the Member Form with a parent or guardian signature, show a photo ID and pay $1.00 (or more if you can afford it!)  You will receive a Chop’s Member Card that you must bring with you to get into Chop’s for drop-in and planned activities.

Youth Empowerment Council The Youth Empowerment Council (YEC) is a partnership between Chop’s Teen Club and Tomorrow’s Leaders Today to provide a forum for youth voice in our community, using their leadership skills to make a lasting impact in Sonoma County. The YEC deploys accomplished youth leaders into service. The YEC involves themselves with local government initiatives and hold seats on various task force groups. They are trained in meeting rules and regulations, develop presentation skills, and implement various projects to empower other youth in the community. Open to students in 10th – 12th grades. Activity Name: RU Ready? Work Ready Workshops Join us for one or all of these workshops designed to prepare you to get a job. In part one, Cover Letters and Resumes, you will learn how to present yourself on paper and you will create a cover letter and a resume. In part two, Financial Literacy, you will learn about the financial aspects of earning a paycheck. In part three, Interview Preparedness, you will learn what to say and not to say in an interview, fine tune your new interviewing skills, and then local employers will host mock interviews for participants that may lead to jobs and to practice their interviewing skills. Cost: FREE

Art Studio Chop’s Art Studio exposes teenagers to a wide range of creative activities and opportunities. Through open studio time, workshops and classes, teens experience art disciplines such as pottery and ceramics, sewing and embroidery, painting, drawing and construction. The Art Studio staff are always available for help with projects and for advice. We are dedicated to promoting unique and affordable activities that foster creativity in a safe artistic atmosphere!

Summer Artist Series and Art Gala The 2014 Summer Artist Series features an impressive line up of workshops. Local artists will work side by side with students/members to create amazing works of art that will be showcased in Chop’s 6th Annual Art Gala on July 31st from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Workforce & Community Service

Activity Name: Urban Spray & Acrylic Painting

We offer several programs for workforce readiness and volunteer opportunities. Join a community service club, become active in our member meetings or take a workshop to gain employable skills. You can also fulfill requirements for school volunteer hours at Chop’s.

Description: Get in on the fun with urban artist Brino for this unique painting workshop! Brino will lead the class through the elements of design, teach you to create your own personalized stencil, and craft some fantastic, colorful urban art. This is a great opportunity to learn from a master. In 2012, Brino's students created ornaments chosen by the National Park Foundation and California Arts Council to decorate the California White House Christmas Tree. Activity Name: Food Handler's Certificate Description: In order to work in the food service industry in the State of California you are required to get your Food Handler's Certificate. This two hour course and test covers all of the required topics such as proper times and temperatures for cooking and storing food, personal hygiene, equipment sanitation and much more. Upon the completion of the course, you will receive the California Food Handler's Certificate, which is good for three years. We have the hottest teen night club in town called Club 509! It includes a spacious dance floor with club lighting for a party-like atmosphere, and an incredible sound system. The cafĂŠ is open for members to purchase drinks, meals and tasty treats during drop in hours and during events.

Activity Name: Rock Wall

Chop’s Teaching Kitchen and Espresso Bar provides the space and equipment for culinary and barista instruction. From getting used to being in the kitchen, operating an espresso machine, basic meal and drink preparation, to cooking, serving and providing employable skills, Chop’s has it all!

Description: Check out our 35 foot state-of-the-art rock wall every Monday and Friday! Our certified belayer will guide you up our new and improved routes. Become a member of the Chop's Rock Climbing Team, and rack up points for each challenge you take on. If you're not ready to scramble up the wall, we have a variety of games that will test your skills and keep you close to the ground.

Activity Name: Summertime Outdoor Cooking Activity Name: Basketball Description: Join us every Tuesday for basketball in the gym. Our Youth Sports Coordinator Justin will organize teams for full court games, one-on-one tournaments, skill drills, or a laid back game of Horse, Thunder, or Around the World. Regardless of your age or skill level, you'll have a great time and get a good work out on our court!

Description: Join us for the popular summer cooking tradition of grilling & barbequing. In this series we will learn how to properly handle and cook chicken, beef, pork, fish and vegetables, using both a propane and charcoal grill. We will also put together the perfect side dish to enjoy with our culinary feast, which will be enjoyed at the end of each class.

Description: On Wednesdays, members run the gym! We bust out all the sporting gear that Chop's has to offer for two hours of fun. You and your friends can play anything from dodge ball to badminton, indoor soccer, volleyball, basketball, flag football, to bowling and whiffle ball. The list is almost endless, and you can even make up your own creative new games.

Music & Recording Studio

Chop’s houses a state-of-the-art ž size gymnasium that includes a 35 foot rock wall with five different levels of difficulty. Activities include basketball, volleyball, dodge ball, badminton, indoor soccer, group games, and more. Join us for some drop-in action or sign up for one of the following activities.

Join music Instructor and Recording Specialist Brodie Cumming on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Try out your favorite instruments, or produce your own beats. Members have access to drums, guitars, keyboards and more. We have something for everyone! *Call for information on renting the Recording Studio.

Activity Name: Volleyball Clinic-Beginner Description: Come work on volleyball fundamentals such as passing, serving and serve receive in an open gym format. Activity Name: Volleyball Clinic-Intermediate/Advanced Description: Join Coach Koy Stewart on Wednesday nights for a volleyball clinic. You will receive 45 minutes of instruction, followed by 1.25 hours of play time. Activity Name: Girl's Group Description: Join Ananda and Denisse every Thursday for tons of fun including field trips, art projects, baking and games. We'll also do make-up application, nail design and hairdos! We will have heart to heart conversations, and discuss daily successes and challenges. Share your dreams and goals in a safe and awesome place for girl time.

Description: Join Lindsey on Mondays for dance class. This free class will incorporate world dance styles with hip hop using a choreography style that will be fun for any level dancer. No class on June 23rd.

Activity Name: Movies on the Square Description: On this fun outing, members will choose a movie to see at Roxy on the Square. On the second Wednesday of each month, staff will chaperone this walking field trip over to the theater. Permission slips and $5 are needed for this excursion.
