WHORE-O-SCOPE BY COLA CANDY-CANE Capricorn

As the end of the year closes in, you begin to realize that huge changes are coming your way. You may have to start being less selfish and more aware of the needs of others around you. If you refuse to make sacrifices, you will lose everything that you cherish, instead of the few insignificant things you should learn to let go of.

Aquarius

You are falling into a trap and if you don’t figure it out soon, it will be too late to save yourself. Watch out for old friends, who were never really friends at all. Shame will come to you for not

Taurus

If you cry to your friend aboutfeeling unloved, at least try to seem enthusiastic when they offer a solution. Be more self loving.

Gemini

One bitten, twice shy, three times and you have been duped. It may seem as though no one ever leaves your life, but it’s time to say goodbye to the “extras” in the smash hit production, that is your story. Pay closer attention to the stars and the crew, they deserve your attentiveness more so than the girl whom gets your lattes!

Virgo

Don’t give up on apologizing to the people you have hurt. If you come clean, it may be embarrassing at first, but everyone will help you deal with your mental troubles. Everyone has problems and even when all hope feels lost, there is still a light at the end of the tunnel….it may be an oncoming train, but you might just need that realty blast to allow you to start fresh.

Happy Birthday Sagittarius! This month has been quite eventful for you. As you faced your first challenge to demonstrate self control, you failed miserably. Not only did you reiterate to everyone that you are unable to hold your alcohol, you also caused real harm to someone close to you. You should try making your new years resolution, NOT BEING AN ASSHOLE. realizing who your real friends were/ are. Your overconfidence that only comes after umph bottles of wine will be your own undoing. Get ready to refocus your life, someone won’t let you fly your freak flag any longer, and you are bound to submit, as your failure will force you to do so, out of pride.

Pisces

If someone offers you money for services rendered, on any level…ask yourself, “What does freelance really mean?” It will wind up costing you more than you are paid. Two steps forward, five steps back

Aries

You are most definitely still a douche bag, with an IQ that makes a coffee table look like a MENSA contender.

Cancer

Someone very close to you is very ill, but will miraculously take a turn for the better. You will be blessed with good karma at the beginning of the year. The good things you have done for others will come back to serve you. The way you have treated your friends and family will also be returned to you threefold. Alas,

you will reap what you have sewn.

Leo

It’s been a tough year for you and an even tougher last month. Hang in there, help is on the way. If you focus your energy on the ones you love and the ones whom love you, you will find the courage and energy to finish all your tasks at hand, and in doing so, excel therein.

Libra

Congratulation to you, you are about to bring something wonderful into the world. You haven’t had the easiest life, but through a majority of the hard times, you have shown great courage and forgiveness. It’s finally your time to shine. The lucky number that belongs to you is going to be pulled out of that figurative hat that we call destiny.

Scorpio

Don’t worry about money right now…it’s inevitable that during this time of year, it will fly out of your wallet. Expect an interesting business proposal when the sun enters Pisces….March…. J

reviews by lissy The Hundred In The Hands ~The Hundred In The Hands Sept 2010 Warp Records Eleanor Everdell- vox, keys/synths Jason Friedman – guitar, bass, programming Become enchanted by Eleanor’s dream-like vocals, as you are taken on an electronic trip to heaven while listening to The Hundred in The Hand’s self-titled album which is sure to appeal to the pickiest of music snobs with it’s new disco-pop-dark wave-electro-rock that has taken the best of the last few decades to become its own entity. Technical and Penetrating without being intrusive, you have to play this album over and over again as each listen brings something new to love, from the ethereal “Killing it” to the catchy, guitar-riff driven song “Gold Blood”. Dressed in Dresden, Commotion and Pigeons will also keep you hooked to what I think is one of 2010’s best albums.

Deluka- You Are The Night OMG! Right in your face from the start, but I didn’t panic when I listened to the debut album from Deluka, instead I enjoyed this new ElectroPunkwave blasting at me from my speakers. A sweet fusion of punk vocals evocating Joan Jett from Ellie Innocenti, electronic sounds that give Close Encounters of the Third Kind a run, and the fundamental roots from the bass and drums engages you for the eleven tracks of this exceptional album. Born in the UK Midland’s town of Birmingham, they are finding success worldwide coming into 2011.

Jonny Cola & The A-Grades In Debt

Jonny Cola & The-Grades come from the wild jungle that is called London, urban and glamorous in the style that shines through in their music. Baby, this is Rock N’ Roll! Timeless music that could have been played 30 years ago and 30 years into the future. Jonny and Ziggy Stardust are kindred spirits, brothers separated at birth, you’ll see it especially in “The Party’s Over” their first single from the album. The video already out for this song, was shot by Ian Brown, and directed by Jonny, fellow band mate: Jez Leather and Ian Brown, I was blown away the first time I saw it. You’re swept through every emotion possible as you listen to each song, one minute brooding and thinking about how drab your life is, then dancing from elation. Its uniqueness keeps you on your toes and makes it impossible to turn off. I don’t see these guys having any “debt” issues with this release, and the band is definitely worthy of the “A-Grade.“

METAL MERGENCE @ REGGIES I discovered how truly awesome the Chicago Metal Music community has become, and how it is evolving. This show was a testament to the camaraderie these musicians have exhibited. Kudos to Metal in Chicago JULIETTE LEWIS & THE LICKS @ REGGIES She might be a bit whacky in her spiritual views, being a scientologist and all, but girl can really rock and roll. One would expect this Hollywood starlet to be just another bandwagon actor gone rocker, but this was not the case at all. Shocked and pleased with Miss Juliette! DAMENATION @ PORTAGE THEATER Hosted by the infamous Metal Sanaz and showcasing some the greatest female fronted bands around, this evening stuck out in my mind as a night where little girls as well as old ladies like myself, witnessed real women with jaw dropping performances, talent that is truly an inspiration. Girls Rock! We always have & will… JOHNNY VOMIT @ REGGIES What more can I say about these guys other than they hold pure rock fury in the palms of their hands. Crass lyrics accompanied with wild fans and Johnny Vomit’s hallmark stage presence will keep bringing us back for more. Glad that they rock on! BRUCE LAMONT ON GENERATION INCLINATION Lissy and both were just getting started and felt honored that such a huge name in Chicago Metal (and music in general) was willing to subject himself, to the insanity of our whacky radio hour. Cheers to Mr. Lamont and Yakuza! Like two little girls in a candy shop. THE WINDY CITY ROLLERS & UIC FLOOR PASSES There was nothing quite like trying to Keep up with the ladies of derby at Chicago’s own UIC Pavilion. My very first experience with sports photography and I loved every risky and fast paced moment of it. Go Rollers! Scared that I was toast… THE FLAMINI FOUNDATION FASHION SHOW @ BANG BANG BOUTIQUE Host of the event was none other than Ben Molin, close friend as well as the runner up on Bravo television’s first season of “Shear Genius”, a competition for aspiring stylists. Steven Rosengard, fashion designer, and also of another Bravo Television triumph, “Project Runway”, donated his time and talent for Theresa Flamini’s charity. The Flamini Foundation charity truly shines by putting smiles on the faces of hospitalized children during the holidays, bringing not only toys, but also hope to families through the generosity of local donations such as the money raised at Bang-Bang’s Event. Blessed to be a part of something that really makes a difference in the lives of children through the arts. OUR NIGHT WITH TONY DUGGINS Another old friend gone celebrity, who hasn’t abandoned his sense of humor and candid communication, showing Lissy and I a great time while being a great father, husband and TOSSER! Nostalgic as well as proud of Tony. ROAD TRIP SUMMER 2010 Lissy and I did it all, saw it all and basked in every minute and mile of this great country of ours. From the Oregon/Cali Coast to the New Mexican Desert, we had our nightly ales under the stars. From Keystone to Amarillo, from 90 West to the classic, two lane American highway, that is Route 66, we hit the road and lived the life. Freed from the flat land of Illannoy. MY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY Yes, I did it and I have Lissy to thank. It has officially been one year of mayhem and music for which I have been working as the Creative Director here at Inclination with my British Best Mate and Editor-In-Chief! We hope to continue to bring you all the very best in all things entertaining! We do it all for the buzz that the music gives us. Don’t you wish your Creative Director was hot like me?

By Jen Kurek s i o wh ? s i g e r e u s

Sue is an amazing artist in the world of glass! She is self taught with an insight many of us seek. She finds inspiration from everywhere she goes and all those she encounters. She has also taught me a great deal when it comes to glass art. Some of you may wonder how many forms of glass art there are. Well, there are quite a few. When I asked Sue to describe what glass blowing is, she informed me that’s not what she does. I was a little dumb founded to say the least. I immediately apologized for my ignorance and asked her what exactly it is that she does. She informed me she works with solid glass. The technical term is flame working also known as torch working. That in the olden days they used to melt glass over kerosene lamps. Sue works with glass rods not hollow, like glass blowers. She melts the rods over a table mounted torch. She uses a combination of propane and oxygen to create her works of art.

Sue sees the world with a different eye than most. She describes herself as a photographer would. That she likes to observe the world instead of putting herself into it. She enjoys watching people from afar and is drawn to the way that individuals interact with others and their surroundings. Hours could be spent just people watching. She has always been an artistic person but before this created her art solely for personal enjoyment. She found great pleasure expressing herself through photography, sketching, and painting. However, never believed that that is how she would make her living. That is one of the main reasons that she tries to incorporate nature into her pieces. She sees the beauty in everything. Some may wonder how one gets into the glass word, well for Sue she was just drawn to it! It truly was Fire that captured her! She started out taking a jewelry and metal class at Joliet Junior College. Her instructor at the time, Bev Deckman, had also just started dabbling into glass. They were allowed to work with solid glass rods to make their own beads. Sue immediately fell in love with it and took the class several times solely to work on the glass part of it. Her instructor let her experiment a little and the more she worked with it the more she loved it. She then met and began working with the artist Sharon

Gilbert whom allowed her to sell some of her creations, mostly ornaments and some small pieces of jewelry, in her holiday shows. Sue only did this maybe once or twice a year but found it very rewarding; the positive feed back that she received from customers only encouraged her to go farther. She also worked with an artist out of West Virginia for a short time and learned about glass work on a large scale; know as working in a hot shop. A hot shop is where they work with metal poles and use a full size furnace to create their pieces. Sue enjoyed this type of work but still felt she had more control working on the smaller scale with the torch. She then decided to move back home and created her own studio in her parent’s basement. Till this day she credits her family as her biggest supporters. While working, she concentrates solely on her art and likes a very loud environment. When I asked her what type of music she likes all she could say was loud. Her taste is very diverse as long as it sounds good loud she would like it! A lot of her inspirations come from her very good friend, Jeff, whom is an iron worker. She met him over thirteen years ago and began working with him on stained glass pieces. They have since gone separate ways artistically but remained very close. HE helps her see that her artistic passion should not be compromised by cost or the possibility of what could go wrong. He constantly pushes her to discover what may be. She credits his persistency, with some of her greatest creations. Through experimentation and her creative mind she came

up with her Memorial Pieces. Sue uses ashes from individual, whom have lost their lives, and places them inside of her glass. Her first experimentation with this process began with ashes from a cat. A close friend had lost a pet and allowed Sue to use some of the cremains (the cremated ashes) to test her idea out. She played around a little until she found the method that worked best. She now works directly with a funeral home in Joliet, IL. Not only does Sue use the cremains but has also developed a process to use hair of the deceased to create pieces for those whom are being laid to rest in the ground. Sue finds it extremely fulfilling. She has received a great deal of gratitude from all that have purchased these. Sue has also become well known through her work with the Will County Vagina Monologues. She was contacted and asked if she would be interested in creating glass vaginas to be worn by the actresses during their performances. Sue, like many of us, had never seen an actual performance but found the offer very intriguing. She went and sat in on several rehearsals so she would know what kind of piece to create for each character. These pieces were to be auctioned off

with a percentage going to charity, The Guardian Angels Home. After creating these pieces, she became bombarded with all sorts of different requests and ideas. She once received a request to have a vagina created with a full sunset and water scene with sand from the individuals favorite beach to be placed inside. This piece was never create

but Sue does plan on doing a large exhibit sometime early next year featuring a new line of vaginas. Sues favorite piece is actually from the vagina collection. While making it she actually incorporated real teeth from a raccoon into the pendant. This is just one example of how she brings nature into her work. She has worked with several different species of small animals but really wants to get a hold of some beaver teeth. She would love to add them to a new vagina creation, no pun intended. You may be won-

dering how someone comes across these teeth, well I did too. Sue actually uses animals, in this case a raccoon, which died of natural causes. Through a burning process all the flesh is removed and the remains are then submerged into a bleach solution to sanitize what is left. She has also worked with several veterinarians to acquire these as well. This is just one example of what makes Sue Regis stand out in the glass world! In the next few years Sue’s goal is to increase her business with the Memorial pieces. She would like to work with several more funeral homes. She finds such joy in creating these and helping people keep their loved ones close to them even after death. She hopes one day that she will have the privilege of working with remains from a fallen soldier. To her that would be the ultimate honor. If you are interested in contacting this artist she can be reached at w w w. s u e r e g i s g l a s s a r t . c o m

Congratulations to IDEAMEN for being INCLINATION’s Band of the Year for 2010, they were trailing behind Vampires Everywhere! And Beneath The Stares for most of the contest and then during the last few hours had a surge of votes and the love from their supporters poured out giving them a win closely ahead of fellow Chicagoans “Beneath The Stares”.

there when we play so it’s worth it to make the trip out,” says Mark. There is a really cool video that they used to promote their March 2010 tour that ties in with the amazing and very original art work from the CD on their youtube channel, check it out. The CD art work was designed by the lead singer and inspired by Plato’s Allegory Of The Cave, Dave Solar, coded it entirely by hand on an “ancient 3D program with no user They signed to Rotten Records interface”, it was fun to make and in back in the end of 2008 and since my opinion, very fun to look at. Just then have been working very hard, like their CD artwork is original, firstly on their debut LP “May You so is their sound, being compared Live In Interesting Times” which to a cross between System Of A was recorded in several studios all over the Chicago area, then going out and doing what they do best, playing live! In March of last year they drove down to Austin, Texas in their van, sleeping in Wal-Mart parking lots and playing shows all the way down through St Louis, Oklahoma, Wichita etc, stopping in Texas for a few dates and heading back up through Tennessee and Ohio to the east coast and then back home, with Polkadot Cadaver, Karen Page and Vampire Moose. When asked about touring with label mates Polkadot Cadaver, Mark Vasquez commented on what an amazing fan base they have “It doesn’t matter, it can be a Monday Night in a small town in the middle of nowhere and their fans will come out and support that band and they’ve been really good to us as well, being open to our music”. In January they played a festival at The Rave in Milwaukee that was put on by The Shell Agency (www. theshellagency.com) and if you get a chance to see them play live, we highly recommend that you do “We’re all about the live show, it’s why we do this. We put it all out

Down and Queen “that’s the coolest compliment we’ve ever received” says Dave who says they are “Carnival Rock…we are a heavy metal band with four guys that sing and a keyboard”. Their other influences are Faith No More, Mr. Bungle and Dave’s voice has been compared to Mike Patton. We look forward to seeing more from such a musically inspiring band. Colas Guide to Travel and Writing ECOTOURISM

LUXURY TRAVEL - SPA/RESORT

Right now, “green” travel is the hottest travel writing opportunity going. There are very few online travel magazines that won’t take a good “ecotourism” story. What ecotourism topics can you write about? Consider writing about countries and places with great biodiversity of flora and fauna, hotels and spas that practice sustainability, tourist attractions that do not despoil the surrounding area with pollution and litter, places that practice conservation of natural resources, tour groups that use non-polluting transport, having little impact on the immediate environment. There are literally hundreds of travel websites for you to choose from that will jump at your “eco-travel” story. Here are a few to start you off: www.inclinationonline.com (I hear they have a great Editor-In-Chief & Creative Director) www.ecotourismlogue.com www.ecotourism.org www.responsibletravel.com

Despite the depressed global economy, there are still plenty of people with enough money to travel in luxury and pamper themselves in spas and resorts. Some travel websites cater solely to this population, and they are more likely to pay for submissions than their lowbudget counterparts. If there is a new spa opening in your area or a cluster of spas where you are planning a trip, pitch this story to spa and luxury travel websites before you leave. Here are a couple of sites to try: www.inclinationonline.com www.vezeo.com www.finetravel.com

ADVENTURE TRAVEL

WOMEN’S TRAVEL

The new breed of adrenaline rush junkies seeks overthe-top, harrowing near-miss, flirt-with-death action that will make them the office hero on Monday. Examples of these sought-after stories include vacations where you fly vertically over Moscow in a Mig-29 jet fighter at Mach one, take Formula One racing car lessons, and climb high mountains above your technical expertise. Some approachable travel websites that eagerly accept adventure pieces include: www.inclinationonline.com www.great-adventures.com www.21stcenturyadventures.com www.realtraveladventures.com www.bootsnall.com www.bushducks.com

Today, more and more women are traveling in pairs or small groups, for a weekend or longer, on bachelorette trips, cruises, boutique shopping, weekend jaunts in London or Rome, art courses in Carmel, art museums in Paris... etc. Many women’s travel websites have sprung up and are getting a lot of readers. They’re seeking articles with a feminine perspective although you don’t have to be female to write the stories. A special thanks to “Right Way to Travel” for getting my ass off the couch and into my car. It’s been 4 years now of Cola vs’ The Open Road…This summer will be no different. Dollars for drives, credits in hotels and all the adventure that accompanies are but a few benefits I have grabbed just by becoming a member of this Travel Writers Guild and receiving their emails! Cheers to my fellow roadsters! May the open road be your salvation, as it was, is and will continue to be MINE. Girl In A Coma- Adventures in Coverland What makes a great cover album? I’m one that is not usually a fan of covers. In my opinion, it’s a way to gain popularity rather than exhibit your own talents (who can hear the band over a crowded venue singing “Living On A Prayer”?) Sometimes it also means you don’t have what it takes to write your own original material. But recently I’ve heard several great cover albums, like The Bangkok Five’s “Under The Covers” (which was featured in our last issue), that have proven this not to be true, and now I add Girl In A Coma’s album “Adventures In Coverland” to this list.

The Drums- The Drums If you’re ever in need of a little winter blues therapy, then I suggest listening to The Drums. Their debut full length exudes summertime and the fun and easy times enjoyed when you’re young, although on closer listen to the lyrics there is a sadness and depth you don’t necessarily expect. The first song that drew me to this band was “Lets Go Surfing” and like the title implies their music is a successful combination of 60s guitar filled reverb, 80s postpunk, and laced with electronica which would be residual influences from their earlier bands. After hearing their love ditty “Down By The Water” I knew I had to hear their entire album and I’m glad I did. The Drums from New York, gained a lot of popularity in 2010, especially in the UK opening for Kings of Leon at London’s infamous Hyde Park, and the NME Music Awards Tour. I see nothing but good things coming in 2011 for them.

Song choice is important, as they should reflect the band’s influences, artist’s that they respect, and they should be timeless. I love the song choices on this album and the way Girl In A Coma has captured them, from Velvet underground’s “Femme Fatale” to David Bowie’s “As the world Falls Down” from the movie, Labyrinth. My favorite song has to be their portrayal of “Walkin’ After Midnight” originally by Patsy Cline, which is also accompanied by a brilliant video directed by Jenn Alva and can be viewed on our video page. This is an album I listen to from start to finish and then play it all over again as there is something to love about each and every song and an appeal for every music lover and every mood like The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and Ritchie Valens’ rock and roll anthem “Come On, Let’s Go”. Girl In A Coma has a key unique sound that is easy to distinguish, helped by Nina Diaz’s vocals and this is what gives each song its fresh new sound. They have proven themselves over and over that they’re more than capable of writing their own material and being successful with it, having captured the interest of Joan Jett early in their career. “Adventures in Coverland” merely adds another dimension to this band and their talents.

The story begins at an audition for a new rock band in the year 2000, where the vocalist, Angel and the drummer Johnny met for the first time - This bands cut several demos early on, a number of the early songs getting airplay on The Axe Attack and BFM. They wrote an indie film soundtrack and played a new year’s gig to several thousand people at Aotea Square before splitting late in 2002. The duo have also been involved in two other bands, collectively achieving the independent release of two albums, two EP’s, a single “Right Now” produced by Malcolm Foster (Bass player for The Pretenders and Simple Minds) which received radio play. They recorded three other singles, two music videos and exten-

Every member of the band has been involved in session work on radio and TV...Angel been one of six NZ finalists in the American TV show: Rock Star Supernova. ABC first single “Friend or Foe” was produced by the UK producer Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, The Lost Prophets, Super Furry Animals) and engineered by Clint Murphy at York Street Studios. Friend or Foe has appeared on an Australian DVZine, Isurf. Played on jukeboxes throughout New Zea-

Returning to the studio in 2010, the bands second single “Falling Angel” was pre-produced by the LA producer Ben Grosse (Disturbed, 30 seconds to mars etc) and engineered and mixed by Captain Hook at York Street Studios. They have also featured twice on “The Rock FM” performing live to air acoustic performances and been interviewed. The bands plans for 2011, book a New Zealand tour, work towards international showcase dates, release three more singles, tour Australia, and work towards an album release at end of 2011. Interview with Cade of Grand Central about their new song & video for “My Star” Lissy: When and where did you guys film this video? Cade: We filmed the video at Centre Stage Studios in London (yes that is Centre not center like in USA) It is located in a lovely area in London, called Angel! :-) We filmed it on the 20th November, although we spent the evening before getting the set ready and preparing everything :-) Lissy: As far as the idea, was that your’s or the director’s? Cade: Well... I had an idea for the video, and we talked about it. Unfortunately with the very reliable weather (not really) in London, we decided to move it indoors. The Director, Manu Sainz, and I discussed a few things. We both had ideas of using extras, and both agreed that we wanted an element of elegance/ sophistication in the video, and so

phistication in the video, and so we decided to contact a couple of model agencies. I love the 90s/80s feel of music videos like Duran Duran etc... and I think the girls did a great job. Oh Manu just called me, lets ask him directly. ...sooo to the Director. “Manu who came up with the idea “ “We both came up with idea for the video, because of the lyrics. I wanted a small team and complete control of the lights so we decided to shoot it in the studio. It’s a powerful song and it needed a good video. We couldn’t do it outside because we didn’t trust the weather, so the studio was the best choice. We spent 15 hours working straight for the video, 2 weeks pre-production and 2/3 weeks postproduction. I am very very happy with the video”

Lissy: Grand Central is currently just you and your brother, how do you split up the work? Cade: With the unfortunate departure of the original member and my best friend, Darran, who left to go to California, Ryan and I toyed with the idea of getting some new people involved, but that didn’t work out. We realised that some people don’t have their heart in it, nor the drive nor passion, so we decided to do it ourselves. Ryan and myself will always be the driving and writing force to the band, so we thought, “Why should we need anyone else?” We focused on just working together, writing, and making things the way we want and what we like. Ryan isn’t very interested in the whole business/promotional side of things, and prefers to be in the studio making sounds, and working

on ideas. I usually work on all the business, pr, marketing, fans, social networking etc, and then we get together, come up with music ideas, write things, and then he converts it into the patterns, and programs and records the instruments... It’s a very lethal combination, and it works great.

We met, well, lets just say he met me while studying and we just got on really well. It was a pleasure to work with him. I think a visual element for a band is very important, and music videos are so important. Bands have forgotten this, and videos have lost the relationship with the music and songs. I’m really happy Manu got the idea of My Lissy: Are you working on finding Star and was able to put the emonew members to fill those gaps? tion into the video and the idea. It’s really cool. Cade: At the start of 2011, we will We will hopefully be working start to audition to fill those gaps. again in future with Manu on more We have to play concerts in 2011 Grand Central videos. The crew he and play in different countries, so had was great, (almost all Spanish we have to. We would love to just speaking) and we had a great time. I do it ourselves, but its always better expect we will work together again with people and real instruments. in future. We will look and see how things go, for the moment we are looking for people to play in Grand Central, whether permanent or not, but we want the right people. We don’t want anyone who doesn’t feel part of the family or who is in it for the wrong reasons. This is our family and passion, if you aren’t on board with it, then there’s the plank to walk. Lissy: I couldn’t agree with you more. Have you and the director worked together before? How did you meet? Cade: The director, Manu Sainz, and I, have been good friends for a few years. We often meet up and drink and talk about music. We love Jack Daniels and spend many evenings together talking about film and music. He has come to many Grand Central concerts and likes our music. When the opportunity came for us to work together, I called him up and asked him. It didn’t take long for him to say yes.

Lissy: Will My Star be on your upcoming album? When can we expect it be released? Cade: Yes My Star will be on the Album. It’s a great track and something that has to be on the album. We are currently recording the album. We had about 15 songs that we were working on which we got down to 11. Most of the time is being spent on pre-production. Just listening and tweaking things. We have had to re-write some verses/ choruses for a few songs, but we are almost there. We finished pre-production on 8 songs, so we should be finished with the other 3 by mid January. Then lay down the final tracks, mixing and mastering. I am guessing it will be a Spring 2011 release :-) but you should be hearing previews of tracks by February/March Possibly another single and video just before the album release. Lissy: Do you have any other special announcements you’d like to share?

Cade: Well, we would like to also say that we are working with SLR/ WEA Records in USA. David Gabriel, Grammy Award winner, got in touch and was really keen to be involved with Grand Central. He has worked with Prince, Barry White, to name just a few. His brother was Michael Jackson’s bassist on “This is it”, so it was a great opportunity. We are also happy to announce that we are working with Bernie Grundman Mastering, who has worked on Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Princes Purple Rain... to name but a few. To have such names associated with Grand Central is wonderful, and we hope to keep on working with wonderful artists and producers. Thanks and enjoy the video!!! Lissy: Thank you and congratulation! We love your work and your achievements are well deserved. www.reverbnation.com/grandcentraluk

Nick: In your words, what originally inspired you to explore your creative side?

proved to be the most popular so far, and where do you seem to get the most attention and support?

Jane: From a young age, I’ve always been what one might call a “deep thinker”. I had an affinity for poetry at a young age and that helped me release pent up energy when I didn’t feel comfortable expressing myself. I grew up playing classical piano and picked up the guitar in college, so moving towards songwriting and producing was a natural next step.

Jane: As of right now, my last 2 releases “The Garden” (more Folk/ Pop) & “Wasteland Sailor” (more Alt/ Pop/ Rock) are about neck & neck...with the latter being slightly more popular. The songs Wasteland Sailor, Dawn of the Douchebag, Rhythm & Flow, River Song, & Tale of a Boy get the most attention.

Nick: What caused you to change from ‘Farchild’ to the use of your real name?

Nick: Is it difficult to divide your time and attention between your various activities?

Jane: What moved me to use a ‘band name’ as a moniker was the fact that I started my professional music career in a city, fuelled predominately by male-driven Rock bands. I was also a solo woman of color with eclectic & “atypical” influences producing somewhat edgy, experimental - alternative music in her basement. After 6 months in Seattle, I was picked up by a small indie label (using my own name at the time). I was excited about the opportunity, but they had a vision of creating a ‘Beyonce or Britney’ type artist in me. I like Beyonce and think she’s phenomenally talented & successful, but that was not who I wanted to be. I wanted people to know that I was capable of playing, writing, arranging, & producing... and to be taken seriously. We parted ways a year later due to creative differences and soon after, I assumed the pseudonym ‘Farchild’ because I figured people would pigeon-hole me less and I could target a more Alternative audience. A couple years later, I reverted back to using my own name simply because I no longer feel the need to hide behind a moniker. I like my name. It’s a good one.

Jane: It can be. I play volleyball for the US National Team and also in various clubs overseas. I’m extremely fortunate to be able to do what I do. Songwriting is actually something I started doing to give myself some balance outside of the sports world...and it just kind of snowballed and took on a life of its own. When I travel or compete I bring what gear I can (a lot of it is portable) and I fit what I can in when I can. Even if it’s just playing a couple of songs on the guitar. Currently, I’m abroad in Italy for 8 months and piecing a new mini studio together bit by bit. I’m passionate about both careers, so I try to make both work!

Nick: Which of your releases has

Nick: Do you have any advice for other independent musicians? Jane: Take your time and enjoy

what you do. Know who to get involved with and who not to get involved with. Invest in some affordable gear for yourself and learn how to produce your own music. It’ll save you lots of time, money, and energy. Dial up the nearest Guitar Center or American Music, let them know your budget, and what you’d like to accomplish sonically. You can cut a lot of corners by getting good at managing/ creating your own websites, learning graphic design, and creating your own press kits. Utilize the internet. It’s free. A little bit goes a long way when it comes to practice (singing, playing, etc). Ask questions. Lots of them. Network. Make friends. Have fun. Be professional. Be yourself. Drop it like it’s hot. Nick: What are your plans for the near future project wise? Jane: Three weeks before I left for Italy, I churned out 4-5 new songs and am finishing up several more. Once things get settled here I plan on released my 4th collection (my 3rd as Jane Collymore) as a free streaming download via my websites www.facebook.com/janecollymore & www. janecollymore.com while I’m in Italy. Going Radiohead, on everyone. Nick: Do you have any entertaining moments that you care to share with us? Jane: Sometimes, I feel like my whole life is an entertaining moment. Maybe one day I’ll write a book :)

interview with jane collymore by nick

Historians may very well look back at the year 2010 as the year the United States irrevocably went down the path to socialism, or the year that the forces of liberty started to turn the tide back to the Constitution. Only time will tell, but there is no doubt there were huge events on both sides of the political spectrum this year. On the left, progressives can point to the passage of the health care law as the first step of the decades long march to total government control of one-sixth of the economy. On the right, one must note the rising power or the Tea Party movement and the gigantic effect it had on the midterm rout the GOP was able to inflict on the Democrats. Although it was ugly and passed with absolutely no bipartisan support, the passage of Obamacare will rank right up Social Security and Medicare as victories for the statists. Even though progressives were disappointed that they did not get a Canadian style single payer system with the government paying all of the bills, there is no doubt that long term that will happen from the passage of this bill. By forcing insurance companies to take customers with pre-existing conditions, not to mention forcing every person to buy health insurance that meets the government’s standards, it is only a matter of time before insurance companies are just an extension of the government itself. So dire is this legislation that twenty attorney generals of the several states are challenging it in court, specifically the individual mandate to buy insurance. With various lower courts ruling both ways on the mandate, it will no doubt go before the Supreme Court. Certainly it will not

the year in politics:2010 by mike paus be overturned by the new incoming GOP Congress, as any attempt to reject Obamacare will vetoed by Obama himself. Without a favorable Supreme Court decision or the political will to repeal the legislation with an all GOP Congress and White House in 2013, Obamacare will reach full effect in 2014. No doubt this legislation is the political story of the year. The right did not take Obama’s takeover of the health care, auto, banking, student loan, and mortgage industries lying down, however. The Tea Party movement, started in 2009 with an epic rant from CNBC’s Rick Santelli, reached great heights in 2010. Their effect was first felt in GOP primaries across the land, toppling establishment candidates from Deleware to Alaska. And while not all of them won, they produced winners like Rand Paul, son of libertarian who happens to run as a Republican Ron Paul. The force of the Tea Party gives the Senate and House of Representatives far more constitutionally principled members that will hopefully stop cold the Barackalyptic economy we’ve endured the last two years. The gains of the Tea Party were not just felt in Washington. Many governorships are now in the hands of the GOP, and dozens of statehouses were captured by the Republicans as well. This will have

a huge effect for the elections the next decade as it will be the GOP redrawing congressional districts as a result of the 2010 Census. Speaking of the Census, for the first time California will not gain any seats in Congress, and Texas is likely to gain four seats. Texas has emerged as a rare bright spot in this terrible economy, gain over half of the few jobs that have been created the last few years. Overall, states that lean GOP will gain double digit electoral votes, making an already difficult reelection bid for Barack Obama that much harder. One last observation on the political year that was 2010: bankrupt California proved its uselessness as a state by not passing Proposition 19, which would have legalized marijuana in small doses. Here at the end of 2010, it shows how we far need to go in the cause of freedom.

DAME NATION Dame Nation is an event started in early 2010 that celebrates Female-fronted Heavy Rock Indie bands in Chicago. We were very excited to be going as press in October as the lineup was exceptional with Beneath The Stares, Wicked Soul, FHOD, Deadmanswake, Circle of Fate and A.D.D. and each band put on prodigious performances. I have to admit though that there were several things that disappointed me. The lighting was probably the worst I had ever seen at a show, with the exception of those times there had not been any stage lights at all and the screen being pulled halfway down behind the bands made it worse and impossible to get the great photographic shots these bands deserved. I was also dismayed to see someone from LA hosting the show, while she may have a great online following she was not very good at her job and had no appeal for bringing a crowd out to the show, I feel that someone from Chicago would have been a much better choice. Also, the venue while beautiful is too big for this new endeavor and the theater seating dampened the rock atmosphere. I am not usually overly-critical and I certainly appreciate the work put into an event like this, the concept is brilliant and the bands are the cream of Chicago in this genre, so I want Dame Nation to be a staple on our city’s rock calendar. Beneath The Stares played at this year’s Dame Nation at The Portage Theater, they very kindly agreed to talk to us about the show and what’s going on with their band. Beneath The Stares are: Lisa LoGrasso :: Vocals Erik Oldman :: Guitar, Vocals Bill Hamning :: Drums Lissy: So you guys just played a little while ago, how did you feel your performance went tonight? BTS: I thought it was great! It was fun; it was great to play such a large stage, lots of energy

Lissy: So you guys just played a little while ago, how did you feel your performance went tonight? BTS: I thought it was great! It was fun; it was great to play such a large stage, lots of energy Lissy: It was great from where I was sitting. BTS: Well thank you! Lissy: You’re amazing, Lisa did you have any vocal training at all?

BTS: Well thank you!

BTS: Yes, yes I have, I’ve actually had a few vocal coaches and that helped a lot. Lots of technique building, stuff like that, it does wonders.

Lissy: You’re amazing Lisa did you have any vocal training at all?

Lissy: Now how do you feel about the term ”Female Fronted bands”?

BTS: Yes, yes I have, I’ve actually had a few vocal coaches and

BTS: Yeah! We’ve been talking about that!

Lissy: It was great from where I was sitting.

We don’t want to be stuck in that category; we really operate as a band, as a democracy. Everyone works as a whole, it’s not just Lisa and we’re the three guys in the backdrop you know?

other women, to young girls?

brought a blend of your backgrounds.

BTS: I think so, it could.

BTS: Yeah we’ve played every style of music there is. Lissy: Do you feel this is where your niche is now?

Lissy: So something like this is actually pretty important.

Lissy: I noticed that! You guys played as a band together whereas some of the other bands, it’s a lady out front…but all the bands are great. BTS: There’s the show and then three guys in the back. Lissy: I know for me personally if it were a male vocalist we wouldn’t be saying “Male fronted band” BTS: Exactly! So that’s why I’ve said this a couple times before tonight, I like the concept of this whole thing that Eric Sanchez put together, I thought it was cool. I didn’t know some of these bands so this has introduced me to some of them and I’ve enjoyed it so far tonight, I’ve been having a really great time. So THAT part of it was cool, but like Bill said, I’m not interested in that whole thing, I’m more into the whole band as a unit and everybody is feeding off of each other. Lissy: You mentioned how you like that Eric put this together, do you think that this could be inspiring to

BTS: We have a friend that’s a music teacher and teaches guitar to girls and she was saying that seeing a band where somebody’s empowered as a female vocalist out front like that is inspiring to get the kids to come out and not be in the background, that they can do it just like anybody else can. Lissy: Now you all came from different bands before you joined this one, how long have you been together by the way? BTS: A year. Lissy: A year…now was the music you played in other bands similar to what you’re playing now? BTS: Nooooo, it was a variety. Doom death metal, Jazz-fusion, punk rock. Lissy: I can really see that you

BTS: Yes This is the band where we agree that we play what we want to play. Who gives a shit what anybody else thinks, it’s what makes us happy. We all get along and it’s very collaborative what we write. Lissy: Where did you come up with the name? I love the wordplay. BTS: I was texting in the car on the way up to Wisconsin listening to a Sonic Youth album and there was a line “Coming Down The Stairs” and that’s kind of where we got the idea from. We played with it for two or three more days after that and we just threw it out there and that was the one. It definitely stuck. It made me think about it for a few days afterwards. It’s a play on words but it also fits what we do cause we don’t know what they’re thinking about when they’re watching us, so it fits us. It’s kind of a social commentary too; you don’t know what’s behind anybody’s eyes. Lissy: I like that! It’s true… So now you guys are bringing out your first album. How far along are you done with it? BTS: We’re in the editing phase right now; we’ll probably head into the studio after the holidays and hopefully have it released for late winter/early spring.

Lissy: I heard Sanaz say you’re doing it all yourself, do you have your own studio? BTS: We do, we’ll probably be working with a regular studio to do all the tracking and that. Working in a studio is not that much fun, there are things you want to have more control over so we’re looking for someone that we can work with and we will have full control. We want to do it the right way and not feel like we’re being rushed. That’s the most frustrating part is the time constraint. Lissy: Now along with the creative freedom thing, are you looking for a label? BTS: Right now, no. Everything we’re going to do is going to be on our own. Put it out ourselves, I don’t want an extra mouth to feed so to speak. Distribution labels is one thing… someone telling you “this is what you have to sound like” no. Lets go in the alley and see who’s going to win this. And the truth of it is, labels don’t want to invest in new talent right now, in general. Everybody’s getting shit for free online, labels aren’t going to say Oh I’m going to spend a bunch of money on this band and we’re not going to make dick. Lissy: I don’t know if you guys agree but I think the way to get yourself out there is to offer a little taster for free, I’m sure that Warner Bros wouldn’t like that very much… lol So how did you guys all meet? BTS: Well Eric and I (Lisa) met about five years ago and .. Eric- I was actually in between bands at the time and taking some downtime but I wanted to start

writing again and Lisa answered my ad. We started writing acoustically together for a while, we had a band together for a couple of years that fizzled out. I auditioned for another band, and due to life changes that sort of fizzled out so Bill and I decided to start writing music that we want to play and I knew Lisa was waiting on something. She had lyrics and it all just gelled. We brought our bass player in around April. Lissy: Oh yes I wanted to ask about him and his technique cause I’ve never seen anyone play bass the way he does. BTS: Yes, it’s very cool, very cool. Lissy: Well you all seem to be technically gifted BTS: We know our shit. Lissy: Back to the female thing.. Do you get booked with a lot of female fronted bands? BTS: Actually no, this is the first time. We’ve played with punk bands, ska bands …our music fits in with all kinds of different music, and we’ve even played with DJs. Lissy: Do you all contribute to the writing process?

BTS: Absolutely, yes. We have a very interesting writing process, it’s never the same twice, you know but it works. Some things come easier than others. Cola: Have you ever thought about throwing in some instrumentation of your own (to Lisa) BTS: Yes actually we’ve been talking about that. One thing I don’t want is we add the keyboard, we have a female vocalist, we’re going Goth. Nothing against gothic music but that’s what it’s going to end up like. I’ve helped out several heavy metal bands and they have female singer, throw in some keys and they end up Goth. I don’t get this, you had death metal vocals then you bring in a female vocalist and you turn Goth. Lissy: Do you play the piano, Lisa? BTS: No but I’ll figure it out. I did play guitar and took some lessons for a while but I use it mostly for composing. I don’t play it in public. Thanks beneath The Stares for taking the time out to talk to us and let us take some photos of you. We definitely look forward to seeing you play live again some time.

chicago live!! Johnny Vomit

@ Empty Bottle w/Eyegouger and Cardiac Arrest Sunday Jan 2nd When I heard this was Johnny Vomit’s first show at the Empty Bottle I was surprised being that they’ve been around for about twenty-five years and have probably played nearly every other venue in the Chicagoland area. But going to the Empty Bottle was also on my list of things to do in 2011 and what better way to start the new year than watching one of my favorite bands play there. As usual they put on a great show and songs about using a bread bag for a condom and drinking never gets old when performed for us by such legends ~ LISSY

Toxic Holocaust

headline with I Decline, Whut?, Souls Demise and Predator @ Reggies Monday Jan 17th “Battle of the Ages” is the best way to describe this show. Reggie’s being one of the few venues that caters to the under 21 demographic definitely attracts those younger fans out to their shows and Toxic Holocaust has a diverse fan base. The opening acts were well chosen for the talents, relevancy and stature in the Chicago music scene which made it quite amusing to see the walls lined with young men, reminiscent of the mob at a gladiator event awaiting the minotaur “till death” battle. When Toxic Holocaust hit the stage, the audience switched out as the circle pit ensued and people like myself found solace on the outer edge of the room. The energy was charged as limbs, boots and sweat flew around in front of the stage, creating a rage to match the intensity of the band giving us a performance we will never forget. ~ LISSY COMBICHRIST @ BOTTOM LOUNGE PHOTOS BY COLA
